Alvvays Concert Review: Captivating, Experimental Perfection

Back on tour after a five-year hiatus, Alvvays (pronounced always), an indie rock pop band based in Toronto, has proven their ability to make instant alt-rock essentials with the release of their third album , “Blue Rev.” Their Nov. 18 show at Boston’s Roadrunner was a flawless — and slightly strange — finale to their U.S. tour.

In one odd moment of the night, lead singer Molly Rankin put her guitar down as the song “Very Online Guy” started. Rankin squatted down, front and center on the stage, and continued to sing the song from that angle. She tucked her silvery blonde hair behind her ears when she looked up, then put her head down and sang directly to the ground. Somehow, her voice projected powerfully around the venue, her stage presence unaffected by the physicality of the moment.

The rest of the songs were played more conventionally. Each piece of the performance came across as well rehearsed and was well integrated. The songs flowed through with thoughtful progression. In both “Adult Diversion” and “Not My Baby,” a riff started off the song before it became recognizable. The band’s timing was impeccable; they always knew exactly when to join in. The songs stuck very closely to the recorded versions, as did the vibe of the band. They dressed like someone’s hipster parents, and mostly in primary colors, matching with all three of their albums covers.

This thoughtful design and practiced accuracy gave them the space for their energy.

The drummer, Sheridan Riley, honed in on this. Dancing along with the crowd to every song, her thick curly hair swung around her face. She counted off every song with excitement. In contrast, Rankin, keyboardist Kerri MacLellan and bassist Abbey Blackwell stayed mostly stoic, letting out a small smile every now and then. Occasionally Rakin bounced a little, or took a step back from the mic, absorbed by the sound of her guitar. The lead guitarist, Alec O’Hanley, didn’t draw much attention to himself. He wore a plain yellow t-shirt and riffed the repetitive patterns that make each of their songs distinct. During “Archie, Marry Me,” O’Hanley took a moment for the iconic solo separating the chorus from the bridge. His solo brought the rock to the pop in this upbeat, rhythmic song.

But the best moments of the show were when the five members put their voices together in different combinations. Their cumulative effort was subtle, but noticeable. MacLellan, Riley and Blackwell harmonized with Rankin, sounding sometimes like an alien echo. Other times, they sang different words and gave the music a spacey feeling.

Setting the mood before the show was the opener, Slow Pulp. All eyes were on lead singer Emily Massey during the set — her soft, raspy voice pulled people in. During the verses, she’d stop playing her guitar and lock her hands behind her back. She raised up on her tippy toes as the pitch got higher.

“If you know this one, sing along,” Massey said to the audience before playing the band’s song “High.” She sang and strummed the guitar on her own for the first verse. As she belted, “I just think I’m too, high” the drums and the ’90s-rock-sounding guitar effects came in. As they all head banged to the chorus, the crowd was swept into the sudden intensity. If the audience didn't listen to them before, they sure do now.

Unlike the dark blues and pinks from the overhead light that gave Slow Pulp such a moody, emotional presence, Alvvays was nearly entirely lighted by the projector that shot out different scenes and patterns for every song. In “After the Earthquake,” the whole band stopped playing and Rankin's voice was accompanied by some keyboard noises with no particular melody that sounded like the wind. Fittingly, the back screen was an ocean.

“Those days, I’d never let you fall apart,” Rankin sang, both hands muting the strings of her guitar.

Then, when the song picked up with violent down strokes from Rankin, and the sudden upbeat drums, the back screen turned into a vintage film of an old dirt road. O’ Keeley soloed on the guitar and the crowd danced.

They played cleanly throughout, and it seemed like every piece of the performance was practiced and practiced again and practiced again. Maybe it's the fact that this was their last show, but it was the cleanness that allowed their eccentric experimentation to work. Each individual melody worked in tandem to create a complex and layered sound. This precise balance and the perfect timing in each of their songs was maintained on the stage.

“Are you awake now?” Rankin screamed.

Alvvays (formed in 2012) is a Canadian melodic-pop infused indie-rock band who took the indie blogosphere by storm in 2012 with their debut single “Adult Diversion”, hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Prior to forming Alvvays, lead vocalist Molly Rankin had always taken a keen interest in music; strongly influenced by her father John Morris Rankin – member of the Canadian musical family group, The Rankin Family. Molly Rankin subsequently teamed up with keyboardist, friend and childhood next-door neighbour, Kerri Maclellan, and the two begun playing music together. After meeting a concert during their teenage years, Rankin and Maclellan invited guitarist Alec O’Hanley to join in on their practice sessions and whom later became a full-time member.

In 2010 Rankin issued a solo EP “She”, recorded with O’Hanley on guitar duties. Whilst failing to cause a stir in the indie-pop world, Rankin had gained some invaluable recording and live performance experience and subsequently formed Alvvays. Featuring Rankin, Maclallen, O’Hanley, bassist Brian Murphy and drummer PhilMacIssac, the group toured extensively in support of Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Peter, Bjorn and John. This period of touring did wonders for the group’s exposure and allowed Alvvays to test out new material before heading to the studio.

After signing with Royal Mountain Records in Canada, the group headed to Chad VanGaalen’s record studio in Calgary to record their debut. Released in July 2014, the band’s self-titled release earned a string of rave reviews from the critical press and topped the U.S. College Charts in August 2014. Also featuring production from Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh and John Agnello, the record introduced the band to a huge international audience, aided by the singles “Archie, Marry Me”, “Adult Diversion”, “Next of Kin”, and “Party Police”. The record was supported by not stop touring of North American and Europe including shows at SXSW, Glastonbury and Osheaga.

Live reviews

I was curious as to how the album would translate live. I'm pleased to report that the sound was great, the vocals stood out in the mix and the band played with some real gusto. As a fan of the band, what more can you want? Alvvays' music is heartfelt, melancholic, and they seem to be taking what they do very seriously, so I didn't expect any onstage gimmicks or the like. Instead, the band came across as friendly and grateful for the opportunity to be playing London. Well done, guys, I wish you all the success in the world!

I've watched a few radio station promo recordings of Alvvays and thought the show would be equally subdued.

It was not. The band was tight and energetic. They ripped thru the set with a bit of witty banter. The crowd was wild, racous and I had way more fun than I expected. Every song is a hit and I hope they keep it up for years to come. They bring a deeply personal originality to their weird brand of edgy pop songwriting, which is a far cry from a lot of the overly referential indie bands out there today. Go see em.

They are SO good live. Some people don't like their stage banter, but I think it's so cute and quaint. I brought along a friend of mine who didn't really know them, but he was super into them as soon as they started playing. Molly is just as adorable live as in pictures and for some reason I felt starstruck being in the same room as her. I've only seen them once, but at least at the show I went to, the whole crowd was so lively and dance-y, which made it even more fun. One of my favorite concerts.

Alvvays' Scala gig was dreamy, quirky and cute-- never mind the mini breaks that were taken to fix guitar strings/ tune guitars. Molly kept the crowd engaged and the energy up and her voice is Amazing live (as well as the accompanying harmonies). The projected psychedelic-1970s visuals which accompanied the songs were topped the the oh-too-short set! Great things await Alvvays!

Shuwen’s profile image

These guys were spot-on, and the mix was so good I wanted to thank their sound guy on my way out (but he left right before I got to him in the line out the door). This is a professional outfit.

Molly was charming and warm, and Molly and Alec banter like siblings.

Although there were many high points, for me, "Forget About Life" was rapturous.

Very highly recommended.

abatty’s profile image

The band is great, tight, faultless delivering shimmering twee pop.

The mix was drowning into ultra low bass shit.

This is indie and extra low bass leave it to hip hop and other genres.

The venue was poor and oversold.

It should be good to control better the quality of the venues and the greedy promoters.

I saw them on Tokio Marine Hall in São Paulo, Brazil and waas my first concert ever. They're amazing, the crowd was singing in each song and the band was feeling the energy, with a big smile on the face, Molly was so charismatic and cute, i had a amazing night and i certainly believe they too.

I LOOOOOOOVE IT i have seen a lot of video on youtube that live performance by Alvvays is not as in the album, & the impression that since it was their last performance on tour, they had learn about the technical thingy so i think it was the best. Good luck for everything & see you soon x

Auroses’s profile image

Well worth coming out for. The sound at the venue was off for the first half of the set, too little guitar, but they did eventually get it right. They played almost exclusively from the excellent net album. I'll definitely see them again.

Ice Spice ignites MGM Fenway as her first headlining tour stops in Boston

Ice Spice performed during her “Y2K! World Tour” at MGM Music Hall at Fenway on Sunday.

It started with an inflatable prop: a ballooning, curly-haired caricature straight out of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, created in the likeness of rap’s newest idol, Ice Spice.

As the set piece mushroomed from flat to full in the corner of the stage at MGM Music Hall at Fenway Sunday night, it was hard not to see an on-the-nose metaphor for the Bronx emcee’s meteoric rise to fame. Born Isis Gaston, she first sparked success in 2022 with her viral hit “Munch (Feelin’ U),” a rapid-rapped tease that paved the way for collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift , PinkPantheress, and even Dunkin’, who crafted a Munchkins-flecked frozen coffee in her honor last year. Since then, Ice Spice has secured a fanbase with her matter-of-fact flow and eye-popping style, although she now faces a familiar crossroads between establishing lasting stardom and faltering to a flash in the pan.

Between the recent release of her debut album “Y2K!” and the launch of her first headlining tour, this summer presents the budding star with a make or break moment. And when she sauntered onstage in Boston wearing a cheeky pleather jumpsuit, stealing all attention from her inflatable twin and damning the towering prop to the background, it was evident that the rapper’s career is far from thin ice.

Ice Spice performed at MGM Music Hall at Fenway on Sunday.

On her recorded material, Ice Spice’s delivery is typically even-toned, if not outright blasé, with her signature interjection, “grah,” often resembling the closest thing to an exclamation mark in her verses. In person, her bars bounced off the floor-rattling drill beats instead of nonchalantly sitting atop them, animating the boastful nature of songs like “Oh Shhh…” and “Deli.”

As she adopted a princess-style prance across the stage, Ice Spice’s in-person zeal transformed her two-minute bites of mouthy hip-hop into full-bodied wallops of attitude. She delivered “Did It First,” a song about two-timing your man after he did the same to you, with an air of saltiness and sly pride, while the saccharine pop-rap quality of “Barbie World” didn’t sour without Ice Spice’s collaborator and co-doll Minaj .

Audience members held up fans during Cash Cobain’s opening performance before Ice Spice's set on Sunday.

The set’s centerpiece was the refrain of “Bikini Bottom,” where the rapper proclaimed with newfound conviction, “how can I lose if I’m already chose?”, a fittingly triumphant sentiment for Ice Spice’s first headlining show in Boston. Although, nothing provoked louder cheers than every time she paused to flaunt her rump, gyrating as her orange locks grazed her waist — make of that what you will.

alvvays tour boston

By the end of her 50-minute set, Ice Spice’s presence felt fleshed out, dimensions beyond the “grah”-shouting fledgling rapper who labeled herself the hood’s Princess Diana and demeaned old flings with equal indifference. Even when the 8-bit intro of “Think U The [expletive] (Fart)” — a single that revolves around the crude dig “Think you the [expletive]? You not even the fart.” — the itch to roll any eyes was suddenly absent.

Frankly, if Ice Spice can make that fifth-grade humor even somewhat palatable, she’s capable of anything. Someone get this woman an ice-cold Munchkins drink from Dunkin’.
