Had been here for a vacation and also to celebrate my wife birthday. On request the staff at Vythiri Village had organized for Ballon decorations and cake in the room. We had booked for a cottage and it is very spacious and clean. The food and buffet for breakfast and dinner has multiple cuisines. Food is very food and vegetarians will throughly enjoy the same. The property is spread across a large area and they have a shuttle service to commute the guests to their respective cottages or rooms from the front office where main restaurant is also located. From day 1 we were guided and kindly accomodated for all of our requests from the staff. All staff memebers are very friendly and cooperative. This is first thing anyone visiting the resort and they score full 100% there. Not even a single Cons regarding their staff and facilities in the resort. Not to name any, starting from their artificial falls, infinity pool, kids pool, archery, zipline, spa, ayurvedic centre, 12 D 🎥, everything is simply great. Definitely the best property in Wayanad is Vythiri Village resort and nothing can replace this. Kudos to the entire management and staff for giving such a wonderful experience to their customers. I will recommend to all to definitely visit this once and i am already planning my next visit to this resort soon. I dont mind having vacation twice a year to visit such a awesome place again!! 😉

Before we booked the rooms, our concept was to choose the best accomodation such that we enjoy the place thoroughly even if we don't spend our tome on sight seeing and ended up booking Visthara... Wayanad Wild is like a watchtower in the jungle. It's isolated from the buzzing town of Wayanad and stands tall and high in the jungle. The pictures that you will see online will not do any justice to the place. You need to be there to experience it. A few things that really stood out for us during our stay: - The staff is very very hospitable. I don't remember the last time we were treated so well. They ensure that everything that you need is taken care of. Mr Subrahmanian - GM and Mr Manoj KK - Manager go out of their way to ensure each and every guest is treated like their family member. You can always see happy faces around greeting you, asking you if you need anything etc. They're a fantastic team. One of the reasons why you should stay here is to experience their hospitality. - The food is outstanding. I wasn't too sure of the food when we reached but it's absolutely delicious. We stayed here for 3 nights and every meal was unique with local delicacies. This property has a full board plan and you end up having your meals at the property itself. Don't miss out of the food! - The rooms are spacious with private balconies that open up to the forest of the pool depending on your booking. There's no television set or air conditioning in the room and you will not need it as well. The washroom is also quite spacious, well kept with modern amenities. Apart from that they have an inhouse naturist who will take you for nature trails, bird watching etc. Don't miss out on this if you can. A few important things to keep in mind: - in case you're coming to this property in a sedan, kindly contact the resort and park it down at the area designated by them. There's a 3 km long off-roading track and you may face difficulties taking the vehicle up. The resort arranges for a pick up a drop from the parking area down. In case you're coming in a SUV you can go ahead and take it up right till the resort. - Kindly maintain the decorum of the jungle. Since it's located inside

The food however was terrible. The use of spices in every dish is totally alarming for even a spicy food lover. Though the manager acknowledged & said they were working on it. Apart from that this place has a total zen feel to it. Just a quite nice place to spend your quality weekend.

We saw many species of bird, butterfly and even a Malabar squirrel from there. Throughout our stay, the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was fresh and tasty. The pool was a highlight of our stay. As there are only 10 rooms in the hotel, we practically had it to ourselves, which was very quiet and relaxing. A local taxi driver booked by the hotel was punctual, kind and was always pointing out animals near the roadside (we saw more here than in the state-organised safari!). Altogether, we would highly recommend the hotel and can’t wait to return!

Tip - Ask for rooms which are higher up - Don't take your own car for the last 900M, the folks from the resort will pick up you in their Bolero (jeep like car ) . They actually called us on the day to check when we will reach, they will also suggest the best route. - They don't have an intercom in the rooms, so make sure you carry your mobile with you (in the rare case you are not planning to)

To be honest when I read the reviews about After the Rains before booking I was amazed and doubtful to see complete positive reviews. But after Day 1 we felt the resort, rooms, food, location everything met up to the reviews. The location is the highlight about this resort and takes your breath away when you see it the first time. The next thing is the food at the restaurant. The food especially lunch is local cuisine and finger licking good. The view from the room (Lilikoi that we stayed) is fantastic. The hospitality from the staff is outstanding. Few things to keep in mind - the resort is located far away from the towns like Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery. So keep all essentials handy. You need to travel at least 1 hour to reach popular sight seeing destinations from the resort. And there are lot of insects and leeches around the resort but nothing harmful...

We felt spoilt by the staff who were extremely friendly and attentive, the area was perfect for watching the sun rising and setting over the dam and mountains. Our room's balcony was overlooking the dam and mountain and it was superb so make sure you book a room with lake view as it is worth the extra money to have that view every morning and evening! The spa was not the best. I've had a lot better treatments in ither places in India for a lot less... The food was good. I wouldn't call it spectacular but the service was brilliant, the food prices were not bad and the staff are phenomenal. I would go back to this place in a heartbeat!

Service is quick and food is tasty. Only thing what we did not like is, what money we pay for that we get very little as much room is concern. In our room for which we paid almost 8k for a night, we got just a bed. No sofa set, no study table, no chair. Wifi is available just for an hour in your whole stay and that one hour you must consume in your single access. We disliked this. Otherwise everything looks quite good.

We loved the glamping experience. The tent was amazing! Very cozy and private with all the amenities you need. The location was remote and perfect for a quiet getaway. You can also order delicious food from the chef. The staff members are very helpful and are ready to accommodate for your needs. Overall, I would highly recommend Grassroots Wayanad.

Icon residency has a great potential to become great hotel. Although is located near main road in Kalpetta it's very guiet and isolated from crowd. There still some work to work to do because the building isn't finished yet but when they finish it this will be really great place to stay.

Alakkal Residency

This hotel is well situated and the room are so clean! All the staff is friendly and will help you to make your trip better and more convenient. Perfect place to stay to visit Wayanad district.

Vinod, the owner goes out of his way to welcome and take care of you. One day was a hartal/strike and all establishments were closed. He took the trouble of bringing me food from his house. The breakfast is really nice and varied everyday. The staff is also very helpful and keeps checking whether I need a tea or coffee at any time. Vinod, the owner even came to drop and see me off at my Bus stop. Truly exceptional place and human beings. Looking forward to my next stay there. Loved the place. Huge rooms, very clean. Lots of place to sit around and spend peaceful time soaking up the sun or reading a book.

The cave design rooms are such a fun idea..my 4 year old had a blast! The property is beautiful and managed by Mr. Biju, Jeetu and Glado. Mr. Biju was always there with ready assistance and Jeetu and Glado were always efficient and warm.Glado especially treated us like family. The food prepared was yummy which was a plus! It takes an hour to get to the dams, safari or lakes so thats manageable...and save for the last 200mtrs strech which is kaccha roads, the resort is beautiful and surrounded by soothing greenery. The rooms, staff and food are capable of ensuring a nice stay. Two Thumbs up!

Stayed here with family of 4 from 23-5-2015 till 26-5-2015 in rooms 201 and 204.Overall its a nice resort with good ambience admist the lap of nature. The resort though needs lot of professional touch to make it more comfortable for the guests! 1)First thing they need to somehow in collobaration with the forest department and other nearby resort owners should urgently get the approach road to the resort relaid and repaired. Its a very difficult road to drive and needs lots of skill especially in the rainy season it is almost unmotorable road. 2)The resort management should see that the ambience should be maintained and not allow guests to Smoke anywhere and spoil the health and mood of non-smokers.If any guest wants to smoke and spoil his health in such a fantastic environment,so be it ! But management should strictly create no smoking zones and allow guests to smoke only in specified smoking rooms or areas and not in open common areas. 3)The workers and staff in the resort are good and work always with a smile. However, there is lot of communication and language barrier. The staff especially the one who takes orders for in-room dinning always dont understand most languages other than malayalam and during our stay not even once our orders were correctly taken and sent to the room.Either we got excess cups of Tea/coffee than ordered or less cups than what we originally added. 4) Also they arrange on request local sight seeing in jeep with a charge of Rs.2800/- kindly avoid taking this,as its a total ripp-off as they cover only around 55kms up and down but charge you a very expensive Rs.2800,instead take your own vehicle for local sight-seeing. Overall its a nice resort, nice ambience and also value for money and definitely worth staying once especially if one doesn't get accomadation in the near-by Vythri resort which is the best resort in Vythri. The buffet breakfast was good, dinner (paid) is good though choice is less. Food was tasty, we liked it. There are a few tourist spots nearby, but others are quite far (40-50kms). Thats that problem with Wayanad - I dont think there's a place which is closer to all tourist attractions. The hotel is in a quiet spot, and the morning view of the hills are breathtaking. The rooms are quite well maintained, hot water available in the bathrooms. Internet connection and a microwave in the room would have made it better..

we went for two days ..had booked for standard room , but manager gave us Kabini suite for same rate on check in , as most rooms were empty ..so we were happy as it was bigger and more comfortable room , but with a bath tub whose stopper wasnt there ..dont know why .. Room was comfortable . Breakfast was included ...but on 1st day it wasnt good , as it was prepared before and hence was not hot ..2nd day b/f was nice , as we were asked to order whatever we wanted , and hence served hot.. One thing I didnt like was when we went out on 2 nd day to do sight seeing , house keeping staff had entered and did cleaning of our room without telling us . We had not given key at reception for doing that as we prefer it to be done while we r there due to luggage and things kept here n there ...called the reception for that and they apologized for it ,,saying they do it for all rooms . So jus let them know before u leave the room as a precaution ..

excellent holiday vacation. tour taxi arranged by the hotel was excellent. except breakfast food has to be arranged from nearby hotel. most staff on leave due to holidays. available staff excellent service.

The Kallat Hotel

Regarding breakfast, the tea and coffee were too sweet and not tasty enough..I feel sweetness must be reduced in the tea and coffee and extra sugar must be serviced so that people add it based on their taste ..

Lakkidi Grace Inn

pros: nature surrounding, travel time to other places, clean cons: tv was fixed after we came, tv channels were recharged after tv fixing, shower and commode water spray was leaking everytime, food over priced and not good. Try hotel sahara near to lakkidi grace inn or hotel paradise near kalpetta for good food.

The experience was amazing and the best thing was their interaction with the guest which I hadnt seen in much of the resort. The duo Darshan and Rahul made the stay an experiential one. And another highlight was their food . It was like homemade food ( had a nostalgic feeling ) with great taste. . The location of the resort is stunning tucked inside the forest but well secured and good approach roads . The walk to the water body near was also soothing, seeing the village of thirunelli on the way .And to sum it , we had spent a quiet night under stars in the middle of the forest near a campfire with memories it cherish.

I think this is the nicest venue I have stayed. Right in the middle of nature, the wildlife (birds, insects) were so loud it was fantastic. The rooms are beautifully designed and in theory this place would be 5 stars --- BUT it has not been well maintained. The tablecloths in the dining room have not been washed in so long they have black mould growing on it. We chose to eat in our room so we could avoid this as it was so disgusting and dirty. The bathroom also has very bad ventilation so the roof is covered in mould also. If they just washed the table cloths and fixed the air flow in the bathroom, it would rate a 4. We were only provided 2 towels - an already wet bath mat and someone else's used soap was still in the shower. These things all made the cleanliness below-expectation. However some simple fixes and this place would quickly be rating a 5 star and I would return.

There was a damp smell in the rooms due to the climate, if proper ventilation/exhaust is provided, it can be completely avoided. Food was good and the staffs were very helpful. The room descriptions provided in Agoda was not correct, it shows AC room but on reaching the resort the room type selected did not have an AC. When reported to Agoda they took it with the hotel, but due to unavailability of rooms it could not be upgraded and provided a refund for the difference in charges.

Real reviews for hotels

Waynaad is a beautiful laid back place situated in the state of Kerala. You will hardly encounter the hustle and bustle of the city.

Around 40% of the area is covered with forests. It is a place for laid back travel and recreations. A good place for nature lovers and those seeking peace of mind. Places Id recommed: 1) Soochipara falls (beautiful drive, nice falls) 2) Pookat lake (peaceful lake) 3) Lakkidi view point (Misty view point, beware of monkeys!) 4) Banasura Sagar Dam (go early by 3pm for the motor boat ride) 5) Wild life safari (go early morning by 7am) 6) Irrupu falls (In coorg, but close to waynaad) 7) Eddakal caves (steep climb, worth the effort) 8) chembra Peak (Could not go as we had a small baby, it has a heart shaped lake on top)

There is much more to the Wayanad, Kerala area around Sulthan Bathery than at first meets the eye. There are wildlife parks and bush reserves with waterfalls all nearby.

Friendly, welcoming people outnumber the bus and truck horns (and that is not easy!). Even if it rains there is an air of magic around the forests where is not all that unusual to come across a small herd of elephant. While you could use the town as just a travel junction …think again. There actually is quite a bit to see and do here. Enjoy!

Wayanad is a huge place with lots of places to walk . you need to be fit and willing to spend about 3-5 days to visit all the places in wayanad.

it is good historic place having lot of old historic places like cave wild life jain tample and other places like dam boating etc

Wayanad is sort of a hill station, though you wont feel it when traveling from Bangalore. The other road from Calicut to Wayanad is a typical hill road with 9 hairpin bends.

It does not have a cool weather - visitors from Bangalore would start sweating through the day. There are a few trekking sites which we couldn't visit with our young kids, so I wont advice it for similar families. There are no children's park - which is a big disappointment. Shopping is not so great either.

Wayanad is a district in Kerala, in the hill ranges and is a very beautiful part of Kerala state. Full of mountains, tea, cardamom and coffee estates and very friendly people , holidays there are necessarily focused on relaxation and living with nature.

If you don't like the chirping of birds and the cacophony of crickets...don't go there !

Nice, cosy place to stay. Can go there to relax, enjoy nature's view and have some personal space & time away from the metro's busy schedule.

"Nature's Abode"

Wayanad tourism.

Nestled in the Western Ghats of Kerala, Wayanad in Kerala is famous for its spice plantations and wildlife. Situated at an altitude ranging from 700 to 2100 meters above sea level, this picturesque region is blessed with verdant forests, mist-covered hills, and glistening waterfalls, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. With its name derived from 'Vayal Nadu,' meaning 'Land of Paddy Fields,' Wayanad boasts fertile valleys and terraced fields that contribute to its thriving agricultural economy.  Wayanad is best known for the wildlife reserves. Home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare species like the Indian bison, elephants, and leopards, the region is a biodiversity hotspot, offering ample opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographers to explore its natural treasures. Wayanad wildlife reserve is an integral part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve peacefully located amidst the serene hills of Western Ghats. Nature lovers can explore the serene beauty of Soochipara and Meenmutty waterfalls , cascading amidst lush greenery, or embark on wildlife safaris in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to spot elusive species like the Malabar Giant Squirrel and the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Wayanad's cultural heritage is as rich as its natural beauty, with traces of ancient civilizations dating back to the Neolithic Age. The region is dotted with archaeological sites, ancient temples, and tribal villages, providing insights into its fascinating history and vibrant cultural tapestry. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local way of life by interacting with indigenous tribes like the Paniyas, Kurichiyas, and Kurumas, known for their unique traditions, art forms, and hospitality. Popular attractions include the Thirunelli Temple , an ancient shrine nestled amidst the Brahmagiri Hills, and the Banasura Sagar Dam , offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The allure of Wayanad extends beyond its scenic landscapes and cultural heritage, offering a plethora of recreational activities and attractions for travelers to indulge in. Trekking enthusiasts can embark on exhilarating trails through the dense forests of Chembra Peak , Pakshipathalam , and Edakkal Caves famous for its ancient petroglyphs and rock formations, while adventure seekers can enjoy thrilling experiences like bamboo rafting on the Kabini River or zip-lining amidst the treetops of Wayanad's adventure parks. In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Wayanad is renowned for its thriving spice plantations, tea estates, and coffee farms, where visitors can embark on guided tours to learn about the cultivation and processing of various spices and crops. The region's culinary scene is equally enticing, with traditional Kerala cuisine featuring flavorsome dishes like Malabar biryani, appam with stew, and fish curry, providing a delightful gastronomic journey for food lovers exploring Wayanad's culinary delights. Wayanad is a perfect weekend idea from the cities of South India. If taking a road trip from Bangalore, you will drive through three national parks: Nagarhole , Bandipur and Mudumalai . The best time to visit Wayanad is during the winter months from October to March, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

  Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the major highlights of Wayanad tourism is its wildlife, and you’ll find plenty of it in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It was started in 1973 and became a key part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere out of 14 biospheres in India. Comprising two major sections named Muthanga and Tholpetty, the sanctuary shares borders with other regions famous for their biodiversity.

Both Muthanga and Tholpetty are closed from mid-March to mid-April but are open during Wayanad’s soaking monsoons. The drive towards Muthanga and Tholpetty is beautiful with a wall of green on both sides. Paddy fields, plantations and thickets of bamboo trees and ginger bushes keep pace with you.

Wayanad tourism offers a two-hour jeep safari to get your fill of the awe-striking flora and fauna here. Ride under the dappled sunshine of the deciduous forest with patches of evergreen forests alive with the calls of around 216 bird species including peacocks, babblers, owls, cuckoos and black woodpeckers to mention a few. You’ll spot bamboo groves and trees like teak, rosewood, eucalyptus and silver oak plantations.

Book a safari at one of the two entrances to gape at langurs, bison, bonnet macaques, sambar, wild boars and herds of majestic elephants in their habitat. If luck favours you then you might be able to spot a fiery-eyed tiger or a graceful leopard in the forest. Snakes and monitor lizards slither in the undergrowth and crocodiles and termite hill geckos lurk in the shadows.

Cost of two-hour jeep safari : Rs 650

Banasura Dam

The largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia, the Banasura Dam features prominently in the list of Wayanad tourist spots.

It is made of massive stones and boulders and is built along the Karamanathody river. This quaint dam has occupied pride of place in Wayanad tourism. The dam helps provide for irrigation, drinking water and electricity to the surrounding areas. The climb is well worth the effort when you arrive at the top of the dam to look down at the gleaming expanse of the reservoir below.

The water is dotted with small, verdant islands which are home to elephants. The monsoon lends the view an ethereal touch. You can hike up to the Banasura Peak to cross tinkling streams, waterfalls and lush greenery. Look down upon the Banasura lake framed by the Banasura hills which owe their name to the son of a famous ruler, King Mahabali.

Wayanad tourism has built a children’s park with tree swings to keep them busy. There are also some food stalls you can browse through to load up on snacks to go with the sensational view. Go speed boating on the lake to feel the wind in your hair and your adrenaline coursing or take a pedal boat to relax and enjoy the sight around you.

Speed Boating: Rs 450 for five people

Kuruva Dweep

This river delta is a hidden gem of Wayanad tourism and comprises a cluster of islands all carpeted with greenery and spread over 950 acres. The island is inhabited with exotic species of birds and plants such as rarely found orchids and herbs. Surrounded by streams, Wayanad tourism has come up with bamboo rafts and fibreglass boats that glide across the water for ten minutes until you reach the thickly forested islands. Take the rafts around to explore all the islands, each more charming than the last. Delve deeper inside the island to come upon bridges made of bamboo and towering trees which are rare and wizened with age. Stroll through the pristine island to soak in its beauty or trek around to cover more ground. This ecologically delicate island is well protected by Wayanad tourism and hence no parties or picnics are allowed here.

You must get passes from the Forest Department to visit the island which are readily available at the counter. Visits to the cluster of islands are restricted during the monsoon. They remain open during October to May and you can feast your eyes on this beauty at a nominal fee. Just make sure you get here between 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Thirunelli temple

This attraction has to have a spot in your Wayanad tourist places list. The Thirunelli temple with ancient temple architecture stands pretty beside the forest-covered Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad and paints a pretty picture, making it one of the gems in the crown of Wayanad tourism.

Known as Wayanad tourism’s ‘Kashi of the south’, the temple was built around an interesting legend. The story goes that while going around the world, Lord Brahma came upon the Brahmagiri hills which left him smitten with their beauty. He descended to explore the place and had a vision of Lord Vishnu under an amla tree. According to Wayanad tourism, Lord Vishnu’s three incarnations namely Parasuram, Ram and Krishna have visited the temple on separate occasions during different ages. Lord Vishnu, in turn, promised that the water around the temple could wash away all earthly sins and gave birth to the stream of Papanashini (destroyer of sins).

The temple is imbued with an air of devotion and soul-soothing serenity, surrounded as it is with lush forests. All rituals of the temple are performed on the banks of the Papanashini stream which is believed to have medicinal properties. A sacred pond lies next to the stream where earlier five streams would pour in. Fringed by dense bushes, the pond holds in the middle a stone slab with the foot imprint of Lord Vishnu. These religious elements make the temple a hotspot for Hindu pilgrims in Wayanad tourism.

There is a holy rock in the temple where people pray for peace for their ancestors. On the western side of the temple lies the cave temple Gunnika which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Sit down by the temple to stare at the grand pillars and stone carvings against the mesmerising backdrop of mist-covered peaks to sense the tranquillity seeping through your being.

Activities and Things To Do In Wayanad

Wayanad tourism pairs numerous activities with the beauty of its misty hills and sprawling overgrown forests to keep you enthralled. If you’ve been wondering about the kind of activities you can indulge in the peaceful and laidback district, you won’t be disappointed. We’ve got enough activities in this Wayanad travel guide to fill up your days on your Wayanad trip.

Trek to a heart-shaped lake

Lace on your trekking shoes to hike to Wayanad tourism’s highest attraction, the Chembra Peak. The climb is well worth it when you come across a stunning heart-shaped lake called Hridaya Saras set on rolling green meadows. Naturally shaped into a heart, the lake has a glassy surface and is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom.

The climb itself is a treat. Starting off, you’ll be treated to green plantations and rolling hills which are one of the delights of Wayanad tourism. As the climb steepens and your legs start protesting, you’ll be compensated with valleys opening up before you to give you sweeping views of the panoramic hills and countless treetops. There is a five-kilometre hike to get to the watchtower and a three and a half kilometre trek through dappled forests and grasslands to get to the summit. The trek is spread over five hills; sing a cheery tune along with the birds in the forest to break through the foliage and look at the unique lake.

Wayanad tourism has made permits available for the trek at the VSS office, which is two kilometres away from the town of Meppadi. You’ll need a ticket which is valid for a group of ten people and comes with a guide who will meet you on the observation deck. The only downside is that a single person, without a group, will still have to shell out the same amount regardless of whether he’s travelling with a group or not.

Ticket cost: Rs 750

Pakshipathalam

If you’re a hardcore trekker who’d like something more challenging then head out for this 7 km-trek which has large boulders studded deep in the forest for clambering. The lush forest has deciduous trees through which sunlight streams in shafts. With numerous kinds of birds chittering in the trees, bring your binoculars along for a good session of birdwatching.

Permits are required for this trek which you can get at forest offices in the south or north Wayanad. The DTPC office in Kalpetta, under Wayanad tourism, also organises trekking guides that charge about Rs 600 per day. You can also camp in the forest and spend a night under a starry ceiling for an incredible experience. You can rent camping gear at Rs 250. If you love your own company when it comes to trekking then get your permit and reach the Thirunelli temple bright and early at 8.00 am.

Enjoy amazing waterfalls

While Wayanad tourism boasts of numerous waterfalls sprinkled liberally all over the evergreen landscapes of Wayanad, a particularly striking waterfall is the Soochipara Falls.

Enjoy a scenic drive replete with views of rolling green tea estates as you drive from Meppadi to the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls which Soochipara is also known as. Nestled amid deciduous, evergreen and alpine forests, this three-tiered waterfall cascades with tremendous force. The waterfall is named Soochipara or Needle rock as the water hits sharp spikes of granite at the base.

The 200m high waterfall has a cliff face which adrenaline junkies can climb. The waterfall forms a pool which looks so tempting that you won’t be able to resist diving in for a refreshing dip. If you’d rather stay dry, stand near the falls to feel the cool spray on your face.

You can also trek up to the Sunrise Valley to look down upon the falls.

Timings : 9.00 am - 5.00 pm

Entry Fee: Rs 80

Camera: Rs 50

Marvel at cave drawings

Eddakal cave is one of India’s prominent prehistoric rock shelters and a highlight of Wayanad tourism. Get a workout on the one-kilometre uphill trek through an aromatic coffee estate.

The cool darkness of the caves harbour art from the Neolithic Age in 4000 BC and Megalithic Age. Some caves have 98ft long, 30 ft wide carvings of a chieftain, wild animals and writings in the Brahmi script.

A steep 20-minute walk up the Ambukuthi mountain takes you to a wonderfully lit cave which has a collection of ancient petroglyphs which goes back over 3000 years and offers sweeping views of Wayanad which will make your jaw drop.

If you’d like to stick around longer amidst all the history, then head to Eddakal Hermitage which has cottages around the hill and a cave restaurant where you can dig into delicious food during a candle-lit dinner.

Timings: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (No entry after 4 pm)

Stare in awe at legendary Chain Tree

The Chain Tree is a lesser-known attraction of Wayanad tourism and is set in the mist-shrouded ghats of Lakkidi. The shackled ficus tree has a legend around it in which a tribal, Karinthandan showed a British engineer a way through the eerie Thamarassery Ghat. The Britisher wanted to grab credit for the route and killed the tribal. Since then, the outraged ghost of the tribal started haunting passerby who pleaded with a priest to rid them of the spirit. The priest exorcised the ghost and tied him to the tree. Incredibly, as the tree grew taller, the shackles draped around the branches grew with it and miraculously didn’t fall short in length.

Visit this temple which was once a storage centre for ammo

Wayanad tourism has some spectacular places on offer and Sultan’s Battery, a quaint peaceful town with plenty of greenery and sparkling streams is one of them. The place has an intriguing story behind it. In the 18th century, when Tipu Sultan was opposing the British colonialists, he erected a watchtower on the outskirts of Ganapathivattom for defence. He needed a place to store ammunition and hatched a clever plan to hide his armoury in a 14th-century Jain temple. He cleared the idols and stored his ammunition there to fool the invading forces. The place is thus named Sultan’s Battery or Sultan Bathery. The Jain temple still exists today and helps tell the fascinating story.

Timings: 8.00 am to 12.00 pm, 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm

Get bamboo handicrafts from Uravu

Uravu, a design centre and a bamboo processing unit near Kalpetta is a place for bamboo handicrafts created by rural artists, women and tribals to help them earn and utilise the bamboo freely abundant in Wayanad. Wayanad tourism encourages tourists to buy beautiful lampshades, handicrafts, spice boxes, binsi (a hollow reed with a musical sound) and a rainmaker in which seeds are filled in a hollow bamboo to recreate the sound of rain. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Experience a stay in a treehouse

Staying in a treehouse is both fun and will firmly stay etched in your mind as an unforgettable experience. Wayanad tourism has ensured that visitors can enjoy this experience since the forest department has created some tree-top accommodations which give residents sweeping views of the entire Western Ghat valleys.

Wayanad tourism also has some private tree-top accommodations such as the Vythiri Resort which is perched 60 ft above a rainforest canopy and is a sight for sore eyes.

It is served with appam and puttu and is a popular breakfast dish. Wayanad tourism has got this delectable dish in numerous street stalls across the district as well as in furnished restaurants.

Meen Moilee

Then Nellikka

Another simple tribal dish, Then Nellikka is gooseberries soaked in honey. The finest berries are hand-picked from the wilderness of the jungles in Wayanad and then soaked in honey for eight months. The result is the candied gooseberries oozing with sweetness!

Wayanad tourism has a lot of authentic Malabar cuisine on offer in the form of eateries which have earned their repute by sating countless appetites. All that trekking and sightseeing will leave you with a rumbling stomach. Dig into drool-worthy food at these eateries:

Jubilee Restaurant

One of Wayanad tourism’s finest is the Jubilee restaurant located at a height of 3000 ft. The restaurant serves up traditional food avial, payasam and vellarika kichadi with amazing views of the landscape. The interiors are decked up in the style of a traditional South Indian home to make you feel at ease.

How To Travel In Wayanad

The best way to explore Wayanad tourism and traverse emerald landscapes is to get your own car so that if you come across a spot that touches the chords of your heart, you can stop and stay awhile longer. However, if you’d rather forego the hassle of bringing your own vehicle and managing it (parking is forever a problem for vehicle owners), there are plenty of transport options available in Wayanad, courtesy Wayanad Tourism, which we’ll mention in this Wayanad travel guide.

Thanks to Wayanad tourism all the places in the district are well connected. There are private companies with a network of buses that can take you to all the places of interest in Wayanad and its outskirts.

If you feel like you haven’t gotten your fill of Wayanad’s rolling tea estates, Wayanad tourism’s got that covered too. KSRTC has non-AC all Wayanad round buses that take you through the sights starting from Sultan Bathery. The bus goes through all the major stops such as Chulliyod, AmbalaVayal, Vaduvanchal, Meppadi, WIMS Hospital and more.

Wayanad tourism also has arrangements for taxis on hire throughout your Wayanad trip. Some companies provide a guide and a driver along with the taxi while others have tour packages you can book online. You can also choose to get the local experience by travelling in shared or private rickshaws!

Budget travel

Wayanad tourism has plenty of options available for budget travellers by way of hostels, dormitories and guest houses. Dormitories offer stays for as low as Rs 200 per day. All in all, with stay costs, travel expenses and food, estimated costs should come up to around Rs 2,500 per person for around three days.

Mid-budget travel

Wayanad tourism has plenty to offer to mid-budget travellers as well. You could opt to stay at an inn which can cost you anything between Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on your tastes and preferences. Wayanad tourism has seen a spike due to nature lovers who flock to the district to feast their eyes on the lush greenery, forests, carpeted hills, sparkling streams and waterfalls. History buffs will also be riveted due to pre-historic caves and legends that are entwined with places. Ideally, people spend three days here.

The Wayanad tourism site suggests that you remember to pack an umbrella for those brief but heavy downpours. Pack a hairdryer which will prove to be your saviour during the monsoon. You’ll not only be able to dry your hair but also other items like clothes, bags etc.

Make sure you carry a waterproof bag for your camera. Light clothes that dry easily would be a good pick. However, also carry warm clothes according to the season as Wayanad can get chilly sometimes.

While Wayanad tourism sees the influx of tourists all year round, it is best to make plans for a Wayanad trip between the months of October to May. The scenic location sees heavy rains during the other months which play damper on your Wayanad sightseeing plans.

Wayanad tourism recommends that you be accompanied by an experienced guide or be part of a group when you venture into Wayanad’s deep forests. It is easy to get lost in the dense forests if you’re unaccompanied.

Pack light clothing with full sleeves to stay safe from insect bites. Dress appropriately and be considerate of the local culture.

There are many hidden gems in Wayanad tourism’s bank which you can explore without having to brave crowds.

1) Visit Jain temple ruins

The Wayanad district was once home to a Jain populace which disappeared a few hundred years ago. The cause remains unknown. They left behind Jain temple architecture which now stand as scattered ruins across Wayanad. Pamaram has ruins of a Jain temple which you can visit to understand the ancient culture of the vanished community. The structure stands wizened by time but remnants of its glorious rock sculptures still remain.

2) Sit by the Phantom rock

Another attraction of Wayanad tourism, though not as famous as the others, is the Phantom rock. Glimpse at nature’s handiwork called the Phantom rock which has several rocks seemingly precariously balanced to form a human-like figure. Locally the attraction is known as Cheengeri Mala. The metamorphic rock formation lies near Ambalavayal in Wayanad and resembles a human skull. The site of the rock offers a vantage point to look out to some beautiful landscapes.

3) Gaze at the Kanthanpara Waterfalls in Meppadi

The Kanthanpara falls lose out to its more famous peers of Wayanad tourism but is no less charming. It is likely, that this waterfall won’t be crowded so you can enjoy some peace in seclusion at the falls. The 30 m high waterfall swells during the monsoon and becomes a stunning sight to see.

There are many ways by which you can reach the picturesque district. Wayanad tourism has ensured that Wayanad is well connected by road, air and rail.

Kozhikode airport is around 25 km away from the heart of the city. You can fly down to Wayanad from Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa, Bangalore and Mumbai.

  By rail

There is a Kozhikode railway station, south of the Manachira Square. You can take a train to the railway station from Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Mumbai.

Kozhikode is linked to various places in Kerala and other neighbouring states by National Highway 17.

Amsterdam bans new hotels and puts limit on overnight tourists

wayanad tourist hotels

Amsterdam continues to crack down on overtourism by prohibiting the development of new hotels and limiting the number of travelers allowed to stay overnight in the city.

“We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” the Netherlands city said in an announcement last week.

Amsterdam has had strict policies for new hotels since 2017, but the new initiative seeks to “ensure that the number of hotel stays does not increase even further,” according to the announcement.

Under the new regulation, a new hotel may only be built “under certain conditions, if a hotel closes elsewhere,” the city said. This way, the number of accomodations in the city will stay stagnant. The hotel must also “be better,” like being more sustainable.

Traveling to Europe soon? Barcelona is another popular European city increasing its tourist tax to battle overtourism

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Twenty-six previously approved hotel projects will proceed with their construction as planned, according to the announcement. New hotels are being encouraged to be built outside the city center.

Along with the hotel ban, the city is also limiting the number of overnight stays to 20 million for the year.

The limit comes after residents complained of the effects of the high number of tourists. In 2023, the city experienced 20,665,000 overnight stays in hotels alone, not reflecting holiday rentals, bed and breakfasts and cruise nights.

The regulation is the latest in a string of moves by the popular European destination to address rowdy visitors and mass tourism. This year, the city’s tourist tax increased from 7% to 12.5% – the highest in Europe. The city also banned guided tours through its famous Red Light District in 2019.

A brief guide to all the MICHELIN Key hotels in Chicago.

Travel Hotels Chicago MICHELIN Keys

wayanad tourist hotels

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Below, explore the map and scroll down for more about each of the MICHELIN Guide’s eight hotels in Chicago.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Palacio de los Duques Gran Melia

Madrid seems to be welcoming new luxury hotels with increasing frequency, with top names in hospitality like Mandarin Oriental and Rosewood putting down roots in the Spanish capital in recent years. And still, there’s more to come: EVOK is set to open Brach Madrid later this year, promising an array of superlative stays as diverse as the city itself.

Whether you’re looking for next-level luxury of the Grand Dame-variety, bespoke furnishings at 19th century palaces, or the lusty minimalism of Ian Schrager’s latest hotspot, Madrid’s hotel scene offers something for everyone. The best offer easy proximity to the city’s many cultural and gastronomic delights : many are practically perched atop the Golden Triangle of museums — the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofia — or are otherwise tucked away in the smart shopping district of Salamanca.

Here, we’ve curated a list of the best places to stay in Madrid, including winners of our annual  World’s Best Awards and It List, as well as other properties thoroughly researched and recommended by T+L editors. For more to see and do around the city, check out our Madrid travel guide .

Four Seasons Hotel Madrid

Four Seasons Resorts

Beyond the sophisticated design and superior service you’d expect from a Four Seasons property, unique draws include the hotel’s collection of over 2,500 pieces from local Spanish artists.

The guest rooms are simple and subdued in design — spring for a suite if you’re looking for something a bit more memorable.

Housed in a striking 19th century building, the Estudio Lamela-designed Four Seasons Hotel Madrid has become a favorite of locals and visitors alike since opening in September 2020 , landing coveted spots on our It List in 2021 and World’s Best Awards in 2022 and 2023 for its regal design and refined service.

It’s one of seven meticulously restored buildings in the Centro Canalejas, including a luxury shopping center that’s a destination in itself. In terms of location, this 200-room property is as central as it gets — Puerta del Sol and the Prado museum are only a short walk away — but once you’ve glimpsed the expansive wellness center (at four stories, it’s the largest in the city) and buzzy rooftop restaurant Dani (helmed by local chef Dani García), you may be tempted to stick around for a while. While the city has no shortage of museums, art buffs will love that the hotel itself features a collection of over 2,500 pieces from local artists studded throughout the space.

Original features like the lobby’s stained-glass roof have been restored to their former glory, while bright rooms — including 39 spacious suites and 22 private residences — balance old-world style with modern amenities in sophisticated neutral tones, plus marble bathrooms. If you’re looking to splash out on a truly unforgettable stay, spring for one of the gargantuan, classically-decorated suites, like the light-washed Penthouse Suite, which leads out onto two terraces overlooking calles Sevilla and Alcalás below. Guests can count on the dedicated concierge team to curate exceptional experiences as well, from Flamenco workshops to Spanish wine tastings.

Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá - The Leading Hotels of the World

A lush central garden provides an oasis in the center of the city, while a rooftop pool and hot tub offer spectacular views of the mountains.

Only guests booking Red Level rooms have access to the hotel’s very best suites on offer, though this room category also comes with exclusive access to the hotel lounge, an open bar, a terrace, and more.

You may not be able to spend the night in the Prado, but you can still sleep beneath some magnificent Spanish artwork (or replicas of it, at least) at this Diego Velázquez-inspired property. Fluffy white beds beckon beneath prints of his famous 17th-century paintings, many of which hang in museums that are just a few minutes’ walk away. Of the 160 rooms and 20 suites, several are well suited to family travel, including two- and three-bedroom suites that are available exclusively for Red Level guests, who receive perks ranging from private check-in to access to the hotel’s executive lounge, an open bar, and more. At all levels, rooms feature Champagne-hued velvet couches and thick golden drapes that draw on the moody and opulent palette of the works, while bathrooms are stocked with Clarins toiletries and typically feature both bathtubs and showers.

What truly sets this 19th century palace apart is its spectacular rooftop pool and hot tub, which provide delightful views over the city from an intimate perch in Los Austrias, one of the most bustling neighborhoods. Downstairs, the manicured garden and courtyard also allow for moments of quiet contemplation — and if it’s serenity you’re after, you’re bound to find it at the Thai-inspired spa, which boasts a sauna and steam room.

Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid

Mandarin oriental Ritz, Madrid

You’re spoiled for choices with five wonderful culinary options here, all envisioned by famed Valencian chef Quique Dacosta.

The hotel is certainly a splurge, but there’s very little we can fault otherwise — the attention to detail and level of service make it an unforgettable experience that’s worth the investment.

Gilded and gorgeous, this historic 1910 property reopened to much fanfare in 2021 (after a $100 million overhaul), re-establishing itself as the singular place to see and be seen in Spain’s capital city. The property’s historic Palm Court was brought back to life after decades out of use, while a new Mediterranean restaurant bloomed in its iconic garden — just a few of the superb updates which earned it a spot on our It List (2022) and in our World’s Best Awards (2022). Sauntering past the uniformed doorman and into the ornate lobby, it’s impossible not to consider whose company you might be in: the institution is a favorite of the Spanish royal family (King Alfonso XIII helped finance it), while Grace Kelly honeymooned here and Salvador Dalí dined in its garden. Take it all in from the intimate Champagne Bar or over the highly lauded tasting menu at two-Michelin-star Deesa, a glamorous affair helmed by chef Quique Dacosta.

After dinner (and perhaps a dip in the marble pool at the serene Beauty Concept retreat), you can luxuriate in unparalleled comfort and chic design specifics in each of the 100 rooms and 53 suites. Think Spanish leather headboards, sultry dark oak wood floors, and Dolomite marble bathrooms — some of the stylish suites even feature mica ceilings that dazzlingly reflect the sunlight, while others offer views practically into the neighboring Prado.

Rosewood Villa Magna

The superb Sense spa and hammam make this a full-on wellness destination, with offerings ranging from eight-step facials to innovative sense journeys inspired by ancient Iberian practices.

Those who prefer a more classic color palette may find the mid-century rooms too modern.

Tucked back from the leafy Paseo de la Castellana, the modern and elegant Rosewood Villa Magna offers travelers a charming, contemporary place to indulge and unwind in the heart of the city’s ritzy Salamanca district. Beloved for decades as Hotel Villa Magna, the property joined Rosewood Hotel Group in 2021. Since then, T+L readers have voted it the best hotel in Madrid two years in a row in our World’s Best Awards, citing its supremely central location (smack in the city’s luxury shopping mecca) and superlative wellness offerings at Sense spa as primary draws.

154 generously-sized rooms and suites feature colorful accent walls and bold, chevron-printed carpets, which are a refreshingly modern departure from some of the city’s more classically-designed hotels (but don’t worry — there’s still plenty of old-world charm throughout this list if that’s more your style). All rooms feature large windows that look out over the treetops, offering city views from higher floors. Families will be delighted by the rooftop “Houses,” ultra-luxe accommodations that can sleep up to six guests and feature terraces large enough to host events on.

Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid

Lorenzo Castillo-designed suites offer unique and playfully posh digs, like the namesake Duke of Santo Mauro’s green velvet-shrouded former chambers.

The mélange of Indian- and French-inspired textiles may feel overwhelmingly vibrant to those with more classic sensibilities.

Modern amenities meet 19th-century French aristocratic sensibility in this five-star hotel, which earned a place on our 2023 It List for its flamboyant decor and 49 antique furnished rooms spread across three sophisticated buildings. Formerly home to the Duke of Santo Mauro, the hotel showcases notable French influences in its design and architecture — yet many of the Lorenzo Castillo-designed suites feature unique textiles inspired by the Duke’s travels in India and China.

The former ballroom is a focal point, having been refurbished as a dramatically eclectic salon with crown molding and punchy patterned sofas fringed in bright blue trim. For a cozy bite, head to Rafa Peña’s intimate, upscale Spanish restaurant, which draws a well-heeled local crowd in the palace’s former library, which retains much of its original character.

  • Neighborhood : Chamberí
  • Distance From Airport: 6 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Sorolla Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, Temple of Debod
  • Accessibility : Adapted rooms available
  • Rates : Start at $670

“Like many aristocrats of his era, the Duke of Santo Mauro gravitated to Madrid’s elegant Chamberí neighborhood, settling in a palace built for him between 1889 and 1902. Now, that sprawling noble residence is a 49-key hotel named for its original denizen, and it continues to exude a regal air. The property’s cozy restaurant, situated in the former library, is appropriately decorated with books and burnished wood, while the salon (the old ballroom where current visitors can gather to socialize, read, or have a drink) is outfitted in deep red hues and a flamboyant assemblage of Louis XIV-inspired textiles.”

The Westin Palace, Madrid

Dining beneath the magnificent stained-glass cupola in La Rotonda Restaurant is an experience not soon forgotten.

While a spa, sauna, and fitness center are all on-site, unfortunately there isn’t a pool.

T+L readers voted The Westin Palace as a winner in our World’s Best Awards in 2023, deeming their plush beds some of the dreamiest around, and delighting in the Art Nouveau hotel’s prime location beside the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofia Museums in the city’s famed Art Walk. The 470-room property is a true Grand Dame hotel, commissioned by King Alfonso XIII in 1912 and so embedded in the city’s cultural fabric of the last century that it’s home to a museum dedicated to its own history (a star-studded one, naturally — Dalí came here to draw, Madonna to vacation, and Hemingway set a scene from "The Sun Also Rises" at the bar).

The palatial property — which houses 470 light-filled rooms and one of the largest event spaces in the city — retains much of its original grandeur, thanks to architectural marvels like La Rotonda’s stained-glass cupola. Inside the Belle Époque rooms, guests will find calming yellow-toned wallpaper, parquet flooring, and the hotel’s sumptuous beds sheathed in crisp Frette linens, which invite a superb night’s sleep.

The Principal Madrid Hotel

Principal Madrid Hotel

The panoramic view of the city from the rooftop restaurant, Ático, is rivaled only by chef Ramón Freixa’s mouthwatering Spanish cuisine.

Breakfast isn’t included in all the room rates — but it’s worth adding on, as it’s also served up on the spectacular rooftop.

Intimate and well-positioned on the Broadway-esque Gran Via, this five-star hotel is easy walking distance from expansive Retiro Park and the peachy-hued Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It’s a prime location for first-time visitors, and with just 76 rooms, it’s one of our go-to boutique properties in the city for warm, thoughtful service. Decor skews sleek and masculine, with shiny black-tile bathrooms and pops of purple and gold in the well-appointed bedrooms.

Above all, the true draw here is the hotel’s superb rooftop restaurant, Ático — helmed by chef Ramón Freixa, who has two Michelin stars under his belt — where you can tuck into a locavore tasting menu while savoring an excellent view of the iconic Metropolis building. The vistas don’t end there: head up to the solarium for a sunbathing session with the city as your backdrop, or stop by La Terrazza late into the evening, which draws a buzzy crowd of in-the-know visitors and trendy locals to the rooftop bar for craft cocktails.

The Madrid EDITION

Sexy, energetic, and unabashedly modern, this hotel is a microcosm of all things hip: Mexican and Peruvian eateries, the city’s largest infinity pool, and maybe the coolest billiards table in town.

The hotel’s modern design represents Madrid’s youthful, cosmopolitan side — anyone seeking a more traditional experience in the city should consider one of the classic hotels included on this list instead.

An enigmatic pink-washed hallway leads into the design wonderland of The Madrid Edition , a 200-room hotel whose 2022 opening was perhaps the most emblematic of the city’s refreshed appeal. A massive, undulating white slip of staircase delivers on hotelier Ian Schrager’s beloved brand of minimalist-modernism, while the hotel invites the sort of old-meets-new interplay of Baroque tapestries flanking futuristic pool tables.

Just off the Plaza de Celenque, Jéronimo (one of the hotel’s five dining concepts) draws you in with Luis Barragán-inspired pops of pink and a delectable Mexican menu from the minds of chef Enrique Olvera and Santiago Pérez (the powerhouses behind Mexico City’s Pujol, New York City’s Cosme, and Los Angeles’ Damian). The culinary delights run up to the roof, where an urban sanctuary serves up Peruvian bites; there’s also a spectacularly large infinity pool, where you can get your glow on before recharging in the candlelit spa. For unparalleled luxury, look to the two penthouse suites, each of which boast their own private pool.

JW Marriott Hotel Madrid

Most rooms at this ultra-central hotel offer beautiful balconies that bring in ample natural light.

The property does not offer a swimming pool, although spa guests can dip into a private hot tub.

Smack in the cultural and commercial heart of the city, JW Marriott’s first property in Spain debuted in 2023 and has been delighting visitors and residents ever since with its consistently excellent service, soothing color palette, and spacious rooms and suites. An easy walk from main sights like the Prado and Plaza Mayor, the hotel’s 127 rooms and 12 suites  — the latter of which feature exceptionally large terraces with optimal views — are a perfect place to base yourself for exploring and unwinding. Most rooms boast a private balcony, while all are tranquil havens decorated in neutral tones by Rockwell Group.

The property aims to inspire mindfulness, offering experiences to maximize your well-being at every turn, be it the brick-detailed fitness center and exclusive spa treatments or the celebrated cuisine at chef Mario Sandoval’s QÚ Restaurant.

Relais & Châteaux Hotel Orfila

This incredibly chic and well-located palace also happens to be exceptionally family-friendly, offering everything from babysitting services to kids menus and early dinner.

The preservation of the historic layout means the property doesn’t offer adapted rooms for those with reduced mobility.

Immerse yourself in a piece of Madrid’s history with a stay in this 19th century palace, which offers just 32 rooms, suites, and villas. This is old-world charm on a truly intimate scale, with warm and eager service that will help you to feel instantly at home in your wallpapered abode. The staff here go above and beyond, greeting you by name and offering the sort of personal attention only smaller spaces can, but without ever feeling intrusive. Families will love how gladly staff will facilitate early dinner times (no need to fuss over finding food during Siesta) or babysitting services for younger children.

Our main gripe is that given the property’s historic layout, it’s unable to provide adequately accessible rooms for those with reduced mobility. However, the lauded garden restaurant, chef Mario Sandoval’s El Jardín, is accessible.

Tótem Madrid, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World

Totem Madrid

Sophisticated, residential-style rooms lure a cosmopolitan clientele at this 65-room boutique hotel tucked between Salamanca’s swanky shopping streets.

There isn’t a spa on-site, but the in-the-know concierges — referred to as “Local Gurus” — will gladly point you in the right direction for an indulgent wellness experience.

Nestled near some of the city’s best shopping in smart Salamanca, this 65-room property lures chic clientele with an eye for detail. Distinction and design are the overarching principles here, with minimalist whitewashed digs offering bright spaces to rest and recharge in a quiet part of the neighborhood. But those looking to socialize needn’t worry — head straight to the roof to find a buzzy crowd of well-dressed locals sipping craft cocktails on velvet green loungers.

The property features over 300 eye-catching artworks, including tastefully framed black-and-white prints in the rooms. As part of its protected historical heritage, the designers painstakingly restored the property’s original pine staircase — an impressive feat, including beautiful iron fence work that’s easy to admire as you make your way home at night.

VP Plaza España Design

VP Plaza Espana

Situated in a sleek skyrise overlooking the iconic Plaza de España, this contemporary hotel boasts some of the best views in a prime location.

Large meeting and event spaces draw a steady stream of business travelers — if you’re looking to unplug, the laptop-friendly breakfast room may not be ideal.

While rooftop bars and sun-drenched pools peek through Madrid’s treetops in abundance, few offer as superlative a vantage point as VP Plaza España Design, which is housed in a sleek 214-room skyscraper perched over its bustling namesake, the Plaza de España. The luxury hotel’s privileged position lures business travelers seeking sophisticated and stylish accommodations within walking distance of popular destinations like the nearby Templo de Debod and Royal Palace of Madrid. While the Wi-Fi is fast enough for all your Zoom needs, you may want to turn your camera off while working poolside (yes, it works up there, too). The spectacular rooftop is decidedly the property’s crowning jewel — head up there early to snag a spot at Ginkgo Sky Bar, a colorful collision of Asian and Spanish influences with frequent live music.

The property is also a leader in the neighborhood’s move towards sustainable tourism, and was one of the first hotels in the country to receive the LEED Gold Certificate rewarding its dedication to environmental consideration.

Only You Boutique Hotel Madrid

The hotel boasts a rare flexible check-out policy, so you can linger in your plush bed or soak up the sun on your private patio for a full 24-hours after check in, so long as capacity allows.

The Veuve Clicquot-branded garden feels a bit overwrought.

Elegant yet approachable, this award-winning design hotel — which bears the stylish mark of Spanish interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán — is centrally located to many of the city’s historic and cultural sights, as well as the trendy districts of Chueca and Malasaña, where cafés and nightlife are abundant.

While all the rooms are sun-soaked and spacious, there’s nothing quite like the two attic suites: both feature romantic sloped ceilings, exposed wooden beams,  and fabulous outdoor patios that are perfect for relishing your morning coffee. The largest of the two has its own library. Best of all, the property offers a flexible late check-out policy that allows you to enjoy your room for a full 24 hours even on one-night stays, so you can grab a book and kick back — you’ve got time.

Mariana Borau

This family- and women-run hotel offers warm, truly personal service — not to mention, some of the best local recommendations for things to do around the bohemian Malasaña neighborhood.

Rooms facing hip Calle de Valverde are soundproofed, but those looking for a more tranquil experience should request accommodations facing the interior patio instead.

If you can spring for one of the penthouse rooms with a terrace at this family-run Malasaña gem, you won’t be sorry. Hammocks and yoga kits beckon on generous outdoor patios, while inside the rooms, chic Spanish artisanal touches abound — like handcrafted carpets from Gan Rugs and unique steel-and-leather bed frames made in collaboration with local designer Matías Carvia — all of which showcase the talents of Kikekeller’s studio, who redesigned the hotel.

The property was first opened in 2002, and is now run by the three granddaughters of the original founder; it’s a rare bird in that sense, offering a true family atmosphere to visitors who return year after year to this comfortable and well-curated abode. If you’re looking to explore the vibrant cafés, bars, and nightlife venues around the local Malasaña neighborhood, the staff will be glad to guide you in the right direction. While there’s plenty of art nearby — including the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art — there’s always something on at the hotel’s lobby gallery, 7i Art Gallery, a Berlin-inspired space with rotating collections featuring emerging artists.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha

Some of the suites in this quirky former palace are truly lavish, ranging up to 1,185 square feet.

With only 34 rooms, this hotel offers a more intimate, boutique experience – a consideration for travelers who may be looking for something more traditional or anonymous.

The Palacio de Atocha by CoolRooms offers some fittingly palatial suites, given that the 34-room property is housed in a 1852 palace that’s been reborn as a chic guesthouse. The impressively vaulted entrance gives a sense of the spacious interiors to come — at 22 feet high, it was initially designed to allow horse-drawn carriages to pass through into the palace; today, it leads into a discreet garden oasis, where you can dip into an aquamarine pool.

The suites here are some of the largest (and most reasonably priced) in the city, all sophisticated in their decor and largely done up in neutral tones with expansive leather headboards and Japanese-inspired bedside lanterns. For a next-level experience, consider either of the CoolSuites, which boast their own private terraces and outdoor jacuzzis overlooking the energetic Las Letras neighborhood below.

Know Before You Go

Wear good walking shoes.

Madrid is a city you’ll be exploring primarily on foot, and many of its wide boulevards and shop-lined back streets are paved with cobblestones. Be sure to pack sneakers or supportive sandals with great traction that will carry you comfortably for hours on end. When your feet get tired, fear not — Madrid’s metro system is reliable, ultra-easy to use, and cost-effective, and you can get pretty much anywhere in the city within 30 minutes.

Be prepared for Siesta and later mealtimes

First-time visitors, be warned: Madrileños take their Siesta seriously. Many shops and restaurants around the city will close their gates for the late afternoon, typically from 2 to 5 p.m., in order for staff to rest, eat, or just escape the heat during the scorching summer months. This is typically an excellent time to duck into a museum, as most of the larger ones remain open (and cool, thanks to air conditioning).

If you’ve visited Spain before, you know mealtimes in general are much, much later than what we’re typically used to in the U.S. — dinner time in particular can come as a shock to visitors, as Spaniards usually eat around 9 or 10 p.m. If that’s past your bedtime, you’ll still be able to find some places that are open for continuous service — they might just cater somewhat more to visitors than to locals. For cravings at any time of the day, several of the luxury properties on this list offer all-day restaurants and 24/7 room service as well.

Tipping isn’t required

As is the case across much of Europe, tipping is generally optional. While it’s a nice gesture to leave 10 to 15 percent for friendly or superior service in restaurants, bars, and taxis, tips aren’t expected or required. For small, inexpensive meals — think a glass of wine and any corresponding tapas — a Euro or two is always appreciated.

Learn some basic Spanish

While almost everyone you’ll encounter in Madrid’s vibrant hospitality industry will speak a solid level of English (at minimum), it’s still a good idea to brush up on some Spanish 101. Firstly, it’s polite to be able to greet people and offer pleasantries in their local language; secondly, some shopkeepers or smaller business owners may speak little-to-no English, so it’ll come in handy to be prepared with a few key phrases.

Book reservations in advance

Madrid is home to an ever-growing number of global culinary destinations , from modernist Michelin-star meccas like DiverXo to seafood spectacles like Desde 1911 . To avoid disappointment, be sure to book as far in advance (several weeks to several months) as possible. For less fancy or fussy spots, walk-ins or week-of reservations are typically fine.

How We Chose These Hotels

Madrid has seen a spectacular revival of its luxury hotel scene just in the past few years, with a dozen big-name luxury brands moving in along the city’s energetic Gran Vía and tucked away in elegant Salamanca. Narrowing down the top properties in the city wasn’t easy — several of the hotels included on this list were voted as T+L readers’ favorite properties in Madrid in our annual World’s Best Awards, while the most impressive new openings and design refreshes earned coveted spots on our annual It List.

In addition to those award-winning properties, T+L contributor Sophie Dodd relied on her expertise as a travel writer specializing in luxury and boutique hotels in order to research and review several editor-recommended properties. She previously spent a summer living and working from Madrid, during which time she familiarized herself with the best neighborhoods to be based in for prime exploring, shopping, dining, and more.

She also consulted other editor-favorite hotels in the city, and poured over hundreds of reviews. The properties included here reflect exceptional guest experience, attractive design, superlative comfort, and friendly concierge services. She also prized hotels with accessible rooms, sustainable programs, and luxurious amenities like spas, pools, and fitness centers.

And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .
