I-25 North Express Lanes: Mead to Berthoud construction starts May 12

Travel advisory.

Weld County — The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin construction of the I-25 North Express Lanes, Mead to Berthoud, as soon as Sunday, May 12. The first phase of the project includes constructing additional width on the northbound inside shoulder. Drivers should anticipate increased construction activity in the area.

The project team recorded a presentation video with general project information, including schedule, scope, travel impacts, ways to connect with the project and more! Community members are encouraged to watch the presentation video and submit any feedback or questions to the project team at [email protected] . “CDOT is excited to kick off construction on this project on the heels of completing the 20 miles of express lanes to the north, this project,” said CDOT Northeast Colorado Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock. “We ask that you continue to be attentive and patient when traveling through the work zone and along the I-25 corridor. Safety is CDOT’s number one priority, the improvements on this last stretch of 2-lane interstate will provide a safer and more efficient I-25 to northern Colorado.”

What is the I-25 North Express Lanes Project, Mead to Berthoud?

This project on the I-25 North corridor is a continuation of the approximately 20 miles of improvements that have been completed on I-25 between Berthoud to Fort Collins over the past six years. This approximately six-mile project will expand and enhance I-25, from Colorado Highway 66 in Mead and connect to the newly built portion of I-25 just south of CO 56 in Berthoud. Once complete in 2028, this project will complete a major missing puzzle piece on I-25 and will be the first time there will be more than two lanes of I-25 from Denver to Fort Collins in both directions.

This project will:

• Reduce congestion, vehicle accidents, fatalities and greenhouse gas emissions
• Improve trip reliability and freight efficiency
• Increase user choice by adding an Express Lane in both directions
• Improve aging infrastructure

Specific corridor improvements include:

• Widen the inside roadway shoulder to 10 feet and the outside roadway shoulder to 12 feet (both are currently 4-feet wide).
• Fully reconstruct the I-25 and Weld County Road 34 interchange.
• Weld County Road 32
• Weld County Road 34
• I-25 over Great Western Railway
• Weld County Road 38
• I-25 over Valley Road
• Reconstruct I-25 to add one 12-foot Express Lane in each direction from CO 66 to just south of CO 56 with a 4-foot painted buffer separating the tolled Express Lane from the general purpose travel lanes.
• Install and integrate tolling and Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment.

Construction is expected to start in May and be complete by mid-2028. Ralph L. Wadsworth & SEMA Construction are the contractor partners for construction of this project.

During construction, two lanes of traffic on I-25 will be maintained in each direction during peak travel times, but drivers can expect overnight lane closures in the area. In addition, lane and shoulder widths will be minimized. The speed limit will be reduced. Please pay attention and follow posted speed limit signs.

• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
• Be patient!

This month saw the UK shipyard, Pendennis , welcome its majestic 55-metre sailing superyacht ADELA  for the fourth time. Luxury yacht ADELA returned 20 years after she was rebuilt at the yard, having gone through a detailed rebuild to her original W.C.Storey design during her first visit in 1996.

A highly competitive racing yacht, superyacht ADELA has twice participated in the Pendennis Cup , taking the overall victory in 2010. Since then she has won such major superyacht regattas as the St Barths Bucket , RORC Caribbean 600 , Antigua Superyacht Challenge , as well as the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta .

Sailing yacht ADELA joins the 46m Feadship charter yacht Constance (ex Jana) and an 85,6m motor yacht both of which started refits earlier this year. With mega yacht Adix and superyacht Lionheart reaching the shipyard in September for short works, the winter refit season at Pendennis is once again expected to be very busy.

Sure enough, she pokes her head out from under the huge pile of polo, rugby and t-shirts. “Good morning, had a nice nap?” I ask; she doesn’t seem too fazed by the situation, “Oh, it’s like this every time we race.”

She wiggles herself free and is doing marvelously well to stay so calm, considering the fact that over 30 extra race crew will be arriving onboard on Sunday afternoon for the pre-race practice. She spurts the logistics involved in getting well over 40 people kitted out with the Adela uniform: “I began designing and ordering the rugby shirts two months ago. As soon as our Captain gives me a idea of who will be racing, I begin the huge task of clothing them.”

Each team member needs a race t-shirt as well as a rugby pullover due to the cooler racing climate. On top of that, they need spare sizes, extra uniforms for visitors, friends and guests; soon Adela’s got an order for over 200 articles of clothing; “in one year alone Adela spends over €30,000 on uniforms for regattas.”

One of Carrie’s, and the second stewardess Jess’s largest tasks, on top of preparing the crew’s uniform, is the interior maintenance of a classic re-build like Adela. All the French polished mahogany in the guest areas has to be maintained and every six months, it has to be refinished; Carrie has to organise flying in French polishers especially from France for this huge task. After this, she moves on to the silver fittings; “I get everything polished properly before our owners and guests come on boards. Taps, soap trays, light switches, cupboard handles, every single finger mark need to be polished away.”

It doesn’t end there, after the polishing is concluded, Carrie cling-films the freshly polished silver to prevent tainting the area with dust, or wear and tear of any kind, be it a water splash, fingerprint or salt-air stain. This is then removed only five minutes before the owners arrive.

Once the owners are onboard, Carrie caters for their every need; she looks after guests, helps unpack the owner’s suitcases and organises dinner reservations at various restaurants. In short, she has to ensure that everything is perfect for the duration of the owner’s stay and make sure they feel as much at home as possible.

Although, with such consideration to the owner’s pleasure and comfort, it’s easy to forget that in seven days, Adela will be racing on UK waters against six other superyachts, each competing for the Pendennis cup. “Yes, it’s a fine balance, we have to be able to go from pure luxury to locking down all the furniture in place and heading out to race in only a few hours; it’s these final few days of pressure I love as we all come together, crew and owner, to give Adela the best possible chance of success in the Pendennis Cup.”

The First Mate

Will Miner, the first-mate, is looking to the skies; he’s on deck and the masts protrude high towards the sun. The upcoming day’s weather is vital; tomorrow is the pre-race day when over 30 professional crew arrive in the morning from all over the world, eager and fresh, ready to begin time-trials and sail tests. The first-mate will organise all these people, and despite being thoroughly experienced on Adela, I ask him if he is naturally a bit apprehensive; “Oh, this next week will be absolutely hectic; I really don’t have time to think about my own emotions and anxieties. I’m here to reassure the rest of the crew, make sure everyone knows what they are doing, are comfortable in their roles and that everything is safe.”

Of course, when you’re travelling at 13-14 knots on potentially choppy seas, there is little room for error; Will’s job is to eliminate this completely. He has to make confident and educated decisions and everyone looks to him for answers and I notice he rarely gets a minute alone; someone is constantly firing some question or another his way. I overhear him discussing sail configurations, looking at weather updates, whilst taking calls from the engine room about various minor repairs and also contemplating the crew arrangement for the week; “we’ll have 50% of professional race sailors, combined with 50% local sailing teams, it can be a difficult combination to manage and merge.”

“Adela is not as easy boat to sail,” he informs me, “unlike the new modern aluminium designs, which have push-button, roller-furling sails, Adela requires every crew member for every manoeuvre.” Yet he is adamant about efficiency, “it’s vital each member understands their role to ensure safety and success whilst racing, and of course, the sails make a difference too;” He jokes, “we’ve just got a couple of new spinnakers arrived onboard this week…” he paused and smiles, “but they’re the Captain’s babies really, so I’ll let him tell you all about those…”

The Captain

It’s Sunday, but with all the activity going on it doesn’t feel like it in Falmouth Marina. With only one day to go until Adela will be competing, the deck is alive with crew. The Captain, Greg Perkins, is taking a few minutes of peace and quiet, although admittedly, with me. We’re stood close to the beautiful varnished teak and stainless helm. Greg is very much the father figure of the boat; stern when he needs to be, comforting at others, calm but clearly in control; it’s obvious he has earnt the respect of his fellow crew over years of experience. Greg returned to Adela after working there before following the retirement of Steve Carson.

Greg is keen to get the very best out of Adela; two brand-new spinnakers have arrived this week in time for the Pendennis Cup. Greg fires facts at me from memory “the new spinnaker, the red one, is 25% larger than the one it is replacing, that will be the largest kite the boat will have ever have sailed with at over 1000m2. Then our second spinnaker is a reaching kite made of heavier cloth and is flatter so we can sail closer to the wind, and all in all gives us at present, 2000m2 of sail to play with at any one time.”

He happily continues, “on top of our new spinnakers, we’ve currently got a new staysail and yankee under construction, along with a new mainsail arriving in winter.” Some of the current sails are between 7-10 years old, and are no longer suitable for racing; they are losing their shape and becoming brittle. Greg is all about the competition and achieving the most from Adela, keeping her on top of her game, so to speak.

Over the next few days Greg will be keeping a close eye on the weather, both physically, and through forecasts. “Yes, I use hour-by-hour forecasts, which come from different sources, so I can assemble an overview of all possible conditions prior to racing, to make an informed decision. You have to use intuition and make your sail choices once underway.”

Each racecourse is released on the morning of each day, so Greg will want to predict what possible course and conditions they could be racing under, and then discuss sail configurations. “It’s difficult to change the headsails, so we try and look ahead and stick with one.” A sail can weigh anything up to 600kg, so changing it whilst sailing is an option they would rather avoid. With a 465m2 mainsail and another 4 sails to manipulate once out there, there is no doubt that the adrenaline will be pumping.

“In a sense, it all comes together last minute; we can talk tactics through and through, but once you’re out there with the breeze through the rigging, the specifics go overboard, and for most of us instinct takes over. This week will be fantastic, I can’t wait to try out our new spinnakers”

Although it is easy to get wrapped up in the pre-regatta hysteria, Greg is always looking towards improvement and the future and this winter he’s got a huge refurbishment schedule. The host of the race, Pendennis, is also playing host to the refit, when Adela will spend four months in their workshops as they fit a new engine, re-spray the entire rigging, all the generators get reconditioned and a huge paintjob of the entire hull.

Her interior is styled by design house Dykstra & Partners and she was completed in 1995. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Dykstra & Partners and she was last refitted in 2015.

Adela has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 11 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Adela is built with a steel hull and steel superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by 1 x diesel Lugger (6170A) 640hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 10 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 12 knots with a range of up to 1,200 nautical miles from her 17,916 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots. Her water tanks store around 9,232 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The Highway 25 bridge across Greers Ferry Dam will experience a one lane closure from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. between May 22nd and 23rd for routine maintenance.

There will be traffic lights placed at either ends of the dams to direct traffic around the work zones.

Those traveling should obey the signs and ensure they drive cautiously around equipment and work crews.

Those using this road should leave early and plan for extended travel time.

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.

The Gulf Countries’ Visa Is Coming. Will It Be Enough to Land Taylor Swift?

A GCC unified visa could prompt many things, including some fleeting visits by superstars.

A Taylor Swift tour is on Saudi Arabia’s radar. That’s not saying much of course – Swift is on every destination’s radar . But Saudi says such a concert could be in the country’s future if the wider Arabia does more to promote itself as a unified destination.

“If we [the GCC] want the Taylor Swifts of the world, we can do it if we collaborate and get an Arabian tour [finalized],” said Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) CEO Fahd Hamidaddin at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), Dubai’s biggest travel trade show.

Hamidaddin was on a panel discussing the rollout of the region’s “GCC zone” visa – a single travel permit akin to the Schengen zone that will allow travelers across Saudi, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

Swift’s Eras Tour is ongoing until the winter with 150+ shows on five continents. She does not have any stops in the GCC, despite Saudi and the UAE investing heavily in their events infrastructure.

Saudi is no stranger to using superstars to promote its tourism agenda. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on the payroll, living and working in the kingdom. Both often promote key tourism destinations in the country and appear in ad campaigns.

In the events tourism segment, Saudi is a big player in WWE and other fighting sports and Abu Dhabi plays host to numerous UFC games.

The GCC Zone

This visa was first mentioned in May 2023 at a conference in Dubai, where the countries’ ministers shared their hopes to unite the GCC so tourists would consider cross-country travel like they do in Europe.

It was then approved in October last year. At ATM, government officials said the “platform” should be completed before the end of 2024.

How could a unified visa help land big acts? Countries’ tourism orgs are aligning on packages to sell to visitors.

On stage, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister for Economy UAE said that the visa will include “grand packages” a month in length.

“The unified tourist visa will allow travelers to visit all six countries,” he said. Through the GCC grand tours we are aiming to finish, tourists will spend more than 30 days in the region.”

Another panelist added that the new visa will primarily bump up length of stay in the Gulf. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority said: “One of the main aims is to extend the length of stay. In leisure, people can travel up to four weeks. We want them to combine their holidays across the GCC.”

But if you’re looking for a reason to rewatch, or finally watch, “The Twilight Zone,” Rod Serling’s seminal 1959-64 sci-fi anthology series, there is an actual holiday: May 11 is National Twilight Zone Day. 

While Syfy, the cable home of the black-and-white classic, serves up a full-day marathon starting at 8 a.m. ET, you can stream our picks for the best episodes any time on Paramount Plus , which houses all five seasons, and for free on Pluto TV ( excluding season 4, when episodes ballooned to an hour).

'It's a Good Life' (season 3, episode 8) 

Some episodes culminate in a final-moment gut-punch. The haunting beauty of this half-hour is that we know the terrifying hook from the beginning: Six-year-old Anthony Fremont (an Opie Taylor-esque Billy Mumy) was born with the godlike mental ability to create and eliminate. He can make a three-headed gopher and kill it when it bores him. He’s done away with electricity, cars, and TV (except for what he himself projects onto the screen). He reads minds, and if your thoughts aren’t happy with him and his choices, he’ll turn you into a monster or send you to the cornfield. Everyone, including his family (Cloris Leachman, John Larch, and Alice Frost), must smile and assure Anthony that whatever decision he’s made out of annoyance or on a whim is “good” — or else. When the Fremonts invite uneasy folks over to celebrate a neighbor’s (Don Keefer) birthday, the tension is just as excruciating for those of us at home.

Viewing the tale of the tiny tyrant today, you may wonder how children showered with positive reinforcement and gifted with tools of AI may alter the world in which we live. Or, perhaps you’ll think about members of a political party placating a temperamental, unhinged leader to keep their own careers alive.

'Time Enough at Last' (season 1, episode 8) 

This early-run benchmark was one of Serling’s all-time favorites: Burgess Meredith stars as bespectacled bank teller Henry Bemis, who’s the worst thing a man can be: a reader. His wife (Jacqueline deWit) doesn’t want him to read at home, and his boss (Vaughn Taylor) threatens to fire him for reading at work. Hiding away in the bank’s vault during his lunch hour, Henry ends up being the sole survivor of a bomb that levels civilization. Now he has all the solitude he ever wanted, but only the same newspaper to read. “If it just weren’t for the loneliness, if it just weren’t for the sameness. If there were just something to do,” he says, contemplating his fate. Cue a twist that’ll make fellow introverts elated for him, followed by another twist so utterly simple and heartbreaking you’ll gasp.

Living through the isolation of a pandemic — along with the rise of anti-intellectualism, book-banning, and employee burnout in America — should give modern audiences layers of appreciation for Henry’s predicament.

'The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street' (season 1, 3pisode 22)  

“There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men.” In this gripping cautionary tale, the residents of suburban “Leave it to Beaver”-like Maple Street assume it must have been a passing meteor that just took out the power on their block (as well as their phones, radios, and cars). But then a teen tells them about an alien invasion story he’s read: In it, scouts had been sent ahead to pose as a human family and prepare for the others’ arrival. Are there aliens living among them? Have more just landed?

As suspicion moves from one neighbor (Barry Atwater) to another (Claude Akins) and another (Jack Weston), prepare for both a lesson on mob mentality and a prescient debate on stand-your-ground laws. 

'Nightmare at 20,000 Feet' (season 5, episode 3)

Three years before he boldly went where no man had gone before as Captain James T. Kirk, William Shatner was Bob Wilson, a man taking a flight home after spending six months in a sanitarium recovering from a previous nervous breakdown on a plane. As he glances out the window, Bob sees a creature on the wing, trying to sabotage the aircraft. When anyone else looks out, the “gremlin” hides. Is Bob’s mind playing more tricks on him, as his wife (Christine White) suspects? Or is he seeing what others can’t and it’s up to him to save them? The tense half-hour, directed by Richard Donner, preys on the universal fear of flying and the torment of having to decide whether the ominous feeling you have is valid self-preserving intuition or false panic-induced fancy. One thing is certain: Shatner’s riveting close-ups proved he was a leading man. 

'Eye of the Beholder" (season 2, 3pisode 6) 

It’s a timeless life lesson, exquisitely staged by director Douglas Heyes for maximum suspense. A woman named Janet Tyler sits, face entirely bandaged, in a hospital. She describes a life of children and adults screaming at the sight of her. We learn this is her eleventh and final State-sanctioned treatment attempting to make her look “normal.” If the injections have failed, she will be forced to segregate with “her own kind.” Her frustration grows: “The State is not God. It hasn’t the right to penalize somebody for an accident of birth! It hasn’t the right to make ugliness a crime!” You’ll be on the edge of your seat as the doctor takes nearly four minutes to remove her bandages once the process finally begins. Only after we see Janet’s face are those of her attendees shown. The jaw-dropping reveals hold a mirror to the arbitrariness of beauty, “the norm,”  and privilege — and are a somber reminder that being different in a way that harms no one is still considered treason today.

'To Serve Man' (season 3, episode 24) 

People who watched this thriller at an impressionable age just got a shiver down their spine. A representative from the alien race Kanamits shows up at the United Nations promising that they’ve come to Earth with honorable intentions: The 9-foot-tall samaritans want to share ways to end famine, war, and disease, and set up reciprocal visits between the planets. The Kanamit (Richard Kiel) leaves behind a book, written in his own difficult-to-decipher language. When its title, “To Serve Man,” is later translated, it seems to confirm, along with a passed polygraph test and the proven success of the aid, that the aliens are indeed allies. Even the once skeptical decoding specialist Michael Chambers (Lloyd Bochner) has planned his trip on their spaceship.

We won’t spoil the shocking twist or the memorable line in which it’s delivered. But the moral: Don’t let peer pressure or an easier road lead you to go along with something that sounds too good to be true. At the very least, don’t commit until you’ve managed to read the fine print! 

'Living Doll' (season 5, episode 6) 

Some folks are afraid of dolls, but parents who had a Chatty Cathy doll in their home in 1963 must have really been scarred by this horror story. Stepfather Erich (a menacing Telly Savalas) is angry that his wife, Annabelle (Mary La Roche), has spent money on yet another doll, Talky Tina, to pacify her daughter, Christie (Tracy Stratford). Sensing Erich’s animosity toward both innocent Christie and herself, Talky Tina changes her pre-programmed dialogue when she’s alone with him: “My name is Talky Tina, and I’m beginning to hate you.” The battle that ensues will have you questioning if Talky Tina (voiced by Chatty Cathy’s June Foray) is Christie’s much-needed protector or a terror in her own right. 

The end narration appears to pick a side: “…[T]o a child caught in the middle of turmoil and conflict, a doll can become many things: friend, defender, guardian…” But let’s not forget that memories of Talky Tina would help inspire the idea for a certain doll named Chucky.
