tour de france corse 2013

The 100th edition of the Tour de France will begin in the one region of France never traversed by Tour bicycles: Corsica. The stage takes the place of the Tour's usual prologue time trial. The good news for the sprinters who usually enter the Tour's official "Stage 1" in the yellow jersey is that the Corsica route features plenty of flat land to cruise.

Don't expect the 213-kilometer race to be dull, however. For starters, the views off the coast of the island floating in the Mediterranean southeast of France and west of Italy should be breathtaking. According to SB Nation's cycling blog Podium Cafe , the racing may be harrowing as well .

Once the pomp and circumstance is over with, this should be a typical opening stage: peloton in full cry, sprint teams all-in, and of course crashes. Keep your fingers crossed on the latter. Maybe those curvy coastal roads won't be as tricky as they appear.

With just one climb -- a category four -- along the route, whoever takes the yellow jersey first will likely be a sprinter. Viewers will want to keep a close eye on points classification favorites such as Peter Sagan of Team Cannondale, Mark Cavendish of Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Andre Greipel of Lotto-Belisol.

The Tour de France 2013 race route in Google Earth

The Tour de France 2013 race route in Google Earth

The Google Earth version doesn't work well. Every time I open Google Earth everything has to be downloaded again, and this does not work well. I have to refresh a lot and most of the time nothing happens. Yesterday I succeeded 1 time to see the parcours but today its not working at all. Can't you putt everything in the kmz so that there are no downloads every time?

Thomas Your website is not loading well since the start of the Tour de France, because of that the Google Earth kml file is not working at all most of the time. I have made a corrected version, a kmz file wich loads (almost) everything from within the kmz file. I can send it to you if you want so you can put it on your website. It is also better for the load on your website.

@Gerard Willems: nothing's wrong with my KMZ file, it works perfectly fine! It's just that some heavy traffic might have caused time-outs at some points. I just modified the location of the KMZ file so it should work a bit better.

Know who is speaking about bag and also explanation why you should feel concerned.

Start: Ajaccio

Ajaccio

Ajaccio is a commune on the island of Corsica in France. It is the capital and largest city of the region of Corsica and the prefecture of the department of Corse-du-Sud. Ajaccio is located on the west coast of the island of Corsica, 210 nautical miles (390 km) southeast of Marseille. It occupies a sheltered position at the foot of wooded hills on the northern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio.

The harbor lies to the east of the foundation site at the original citadel on a hill overlooking a peninsula protecting the harbor on the south, where now are located the Quai de la Citadelle and the Jettée de la Citadelle. The modern city not only encloses the entire harbor but takes up the better part of the Gulf of Ajaccio and in suburban form extends for some miles up the valley of the Gravona River. The flow from that river is nearly entirely consumed as the city’s water supply.

Ajaccio is located on the west coast of Corsica Island, 210 nautical miles (390 km) southeast of Marseille.

Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821, born as Napoleone di Buonaparte) was born at Ajaccio.

Finish: Calvi

Calvi

Calvi is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the seat of the Canton of Calvi, which contains Calvi and one other commune, Lumio. Calvi is also the capital of the Arrondissement of Calvi, which contains, besides the Canton of Calvi, three other cantons: L’Île-Rousse, Belgodère, and Calenzana.
