Poor experience

A very poor experience today at the Nomad clinic in Bond Street. My son had wanted a dengue fever vaccination not available in the country he lives in. He told Nomad about an operation 12 weeks ago and this was checked in before saying to travel down : one hour journey! When he arrived they said they couldn’t give the vaccine and charged him £25 for 4 minutes with the nurse. Poor treatment !

Vaccination appointment

Just had an appointment at the Cardiff clinic with Jo Vickery. What a lovely, professional and informative gentleman. He gave us plenty of information to helps us stay well and enjoy our holiday. Will definitely use Nomad again and I would highly recommend. Thanks Jo.

I have an overland expedition company

I have an overland expedition company, and most years need to renew our expedition kit with supplies. Kata (Pharmacy Coordinator) was superb and very patient as there was some back and forth to get everything we were after, plus some prescription items. Can't fault the service top marks! A++

Kind and compassionate staff

We had not booked in advance for our test to return to France the following day. We asked for help at the clinic having been sent from various other covid clinics, as we hadn't booked. The ladies were so helpful when they saw our dilemma ,and fitted us in between their other appointments. Such a relief for a couple in their mid seventies, to be treated so kindly. Thank you both.

Cooldrive Nomad was not a great experience as a credit hold was put down after a tentative enquiry

We made the mistake of making a tentative enquiry with Cooldrive Nomad about hiring a motorhome before reading their reviews and like others discovered a credit hold had been placed on our account which we couldn’t get rid of in order to change our booking until the 7 day period was up. The person we were dealing with seemed to be doing his best but couldn’t release the credit hold. We ended up going direct to a local provider once the credit hold had been released after 7 days. I think it’s best to avoid brokers if possible. I wouldn’t use this company again.

The service was very good particularly…

The service was very good particularly the support. I had some suggestions all the same about making sure that people understood they needed to register their sample in order to get results. I did not. This information should be included with the package. Nomad said they are looking into this.

Absolutely fantastic service

I dont usually leave reviews but I am very impressed by the service Nomad offers. I was incredibly anxious about getting my PCR test done and receiving the results on time - the team was friendly and reassured me every step of the way. I received my results on time, was taken through the process in a very friendly and supportive way and would highly recommend them.

Professional and caring

I attended the Cardiff clinic for the first time on 26/05/23 following my GP’s recommendation. Everybody there were polite and professional. I was seen by Dhanya who discussed my travel plans with me and identified the advised vaccinations. She provided me with suitable advice to inform my decisions. Everything was clear and transparent, she even invited me to view the results on the computer screen for the regions I was intending to visit. I had the vaccinations there and then and Dhanya gave me a leaflet with further guidance… including appropriate repellent sprays and where to source them. I will definitely re-use the Nomad clinic in future. Highly recommended.

Excellent Service

Excellent company in every area. Quality of clothes is second to none. Delivery is always earlier than expected. Any returns you may have are dealt with immediately. Telephone manner of the guy is absolutely brilliant. I have been buying from them for a while.

PICK A DIFFERENT COMPANY!!!!

Family member used this company after returning from a amber country. They use oncologica which has shocking reviews.Day 6 and still no sign of the day 2 results. They refuse to recognise the Royal Mail delivery time and send a email when they scan the item. Which could be up to 12 hrs later. This gives them even longer to process the test. Still no results. False advertising, trading standards and breach of contract!

Date of experience : 27 August 2021

Ignore bad reviews!

We ordered our fit to fly tests plus day 2 and 8 tests through Nomad travel and customer service was excellent! Was worried after reading previous reviews however all of our tests arrived in plenty of time and our fit to fly results were actually received the same day that the courier collected our tests! Mollie Moore dealt with all of our test collections and deliveries and provided excellent customer service and explained each stage of each test for us as the whole process can get a little confusing! Would definitely recommend Nomad and wouldn’t be put off by previous reviews Thanks again Mollie ☺️

DON’T USE THEM

DON’T USE THEM. They partnered with one of the worst Covid testing companies in the U.K. They advertise 24 hours on tests being conducted, but absolve themselves of any responsibility to fulfil those promises in the terms and conditions. This kind of deceptive business practice should be illegal. AVOID.

Unreliable - Avoid - Day 2 & Day 8 Covid19 Tests

I have purchased through them a Day 2 & Day 8 Covid19 Tests. They collaborate with a company named Oncologica. Tests arrived on time but results no. I have sent them the day 2 test on Monday morning using Royal Mail priority service and still I haven't received my results - Friday morning. I emailed the company asking for the results on Wednesday and haven't received any reply yet (apart from an auto response email). Unreliable- Avoid.

A great service from Nomad

Interesting to see such disparity in reviews of Nomad's PCR testing service. Can only comment on our recent experience; all very positive. We ordered Day 2 kits in France, driving to our ferry on 15th August, after belatedly realising we needed a test reference number on the UK passenger locator form! At £55 they were not the most expensive, nor the least, but all courier and return postage included...unlike other providers who slap £25+ on at the end of your order! The kits arrived within the specified delivery hour on 17th August. We returned same day through priority Royal Mail post box -easy. Despite forgetting to scan our kit barcodes into the Coronfocus App (reminder instructions to do this could be included in the kit, although are in the original confirmation email) we have our results today -20th August. I cannot fault this service.

Poor BA recommendation for COVID-19 tests

We are travelling on 31/Dec so needed a COVID-19 PCR test service just after the Christmas break. BA offered 2 clinics including City Doc. I emailed them to check when their clinics were open on 28th-29th Dec. They said their PCR testing stops on 21st Dec and re-opens on 2nd Jan. British Airways team, you need to get this company off your recommended list. Very poor service and reflects badly on whoever in BA selected them as a pass-through service provider. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Dhanya was fantastic and really knows…

Dhanya was fantastic and really knows her stuff. Had some really useful information for our trip to Vietnam and had the vaccinations we needed. The receptionist was super friendly too. Great service, 100% recommend!

I tried to make an appointment online…

I tried to make an appointment online for the travel clinic, as they don't pick up the phone. There is no opportunity to add more than 1 individual on booking form, so i added a line to that effect in free text when making a booking. They then called me that my chosen time is not good for a family and they wanted to reschedule to a time not practical to us or a time very close to departure. They then kept nagging about a deposit. Nomad used to be an excellent company, but no longer I am afraid

Day 2 Covid Test - great experience

I wanted to write this review because it was such a minefield when we came to book our day 2 covid test on return to the UK from an amber destination. So many providers have bad reviews and there is such a range of pricing! I booked through Nomad Travel and the process was extremely efficient and well managed. I booked the test 2 days before departure, and the test kit arrived the day after I landed. The kit came from Oncologica and was very easy to follow.. the details had all been pre-loaded on to the website for me and the results came 2 days after posting the kit back. It cost £55 which was very reasonable compared to other providers - my partner paid £90 and the process was harder to follow and slower (he had to enter all details himself and the kit only arrived on day 2). He still hasn't got his results. We will definitely use Nomad Travel next time we travel for all required tests and wanted to reassure those in a similar quandary!

Date of experience : 30 July 2021

A reasonably good service at a reasonable price

We booked Day 2 and 8 tests and also Day 5 Test to Release tests - all arrived on time, but the Day 2 results took 4 days from posting the tests, perhaps because we took the tests on a Saturday. The results of the Day 5 tests were fairly quick, so we could quit quarantine early on Day 7. Altogether not bad, but no question of a result in 24 hours. What they promise is 24 hours from when they receive the test. The prices were not bad - £55 for Day 5, and £99 for the Days 2 and 8 package. And you can track progress of your tests on their app.

Date of experience : 15 August 2021

Day 2 test on return-just a bad joke or an advertising stunt

I tried to book Day2 only tests for our return from holiday in August at the Nomad Turnpike Lane clinic after finding them on the government website. It is a con : the booking system doesn’t work and the rude lady on the phone told me it is a limited offer(not mentioned anywhere though!) and it already stopped because of the big demand in July. In their booking system you could see all the bookings they made for this Day2 tests, 8 in total on the 16 July. I found it extremely funny if you think these tests will only be usable from the 19 July. Forget about them and their amazing deals, they do not exist.

Like Nomad Travel, Masta was established more than 30 years ago and operates one of the largest networks of private travel clinics in the UK.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, marks a “significant milestone” for both companies as it enables them to leverage their collective strengths and expertise in the travel vaccination industry, according to a statement.

Nomad Travel is led by Andrew Lewis who has worked and grown companies within the travel health sector for 15 years.

He is former chief executive of Tropical Medical Group (TMB) in Ireland.

Lewis said: “The acquisition of Masta is an exciting step for Nomad Travel.

“Nomad and Masta have huge synergies that will allow the Nomad Travel Health Group to grow exponentially.

“Nomad Travel Health Group is now one of the largest networks of private travel health clinics in the UK.

If you're planning something a little more exotic than a trip to Costa Brava then this is a great place to come for sensible and practical advice on travelling and to get any vaccinations done. Although it seems a bit odd to head to what initially looks like a camping shop to get your yellow fever jab done actually these guys are up-to-date with the current information on what you need where and when. You can get same-day jabs if you haven't been good at planning or have an emergency trip. In the shop below they have high-end hiking and travel-kit gear, but they do take their sales seriously so expect good discounts when they are on. If you go instore (or online) they have handy 'kit-lists' for different types of climate so you base your packing around it. Great for first-time explorers and professionals alike.

nomad travel clinics

If you're in Bristol and getting itchy feet to be somewhere warmer/friendlier/more adventurous, then (after the travel agents) Nomad should be your first stop for travel essentials and jabs. There's plenty to see in the shop but it's best for clothes, sleeping bags, and stuff you need to stay healthy abroad. Although there's plenty here for the more laid back or less serious traveller, they do specialise in catering for more adventurous people too, with some pretty heavy duty tents and coats. If you're a complete beginner and not sure what you should be getting for your trip the staff can help out too. It's not cheap and there's lots of slightly useless 'travel accessories' to waste your money on (e.g. a solar powered ipod charger). Nevertheless, an essential shop if you want to taste something a bit more wild than Bristol.

nomad travel clinics

Get your jabs done here. They are very helpful and know what they are talking about. The kit they sell is good, although maybe a little over priced. You are paying for expert advice, though, and that is what you get. Make sure you call and talk to them about the jabs you think you need, because occasionally you need to get a host of them spread out over a few weeks. This, in my book, is Bristol's best travel store!

Photo of Lisa B.

Nomad on Park Street fits right in here, frequented by cool kids wanting to do something with their gap year and festival goers. They have a great range of outdoor gear, backpacks, boots, tents and many essential and handy items which will come in useful on a trip away. Downstairs in the shop they also have a vaccine centre, where the staff are all really knowledgeable about what you need for what country and how far in advance you need it too. If you're in the early stages of planning, go have a browse in the competent travel book section to get some inspiration.

Photo of Pollita M.

If you are headed to foreign climes and have left thinking about those nasty jabs until the last minute Nomad is a great place to have at your disposal. They stock most vaccines and you can usually book an appointment at fairly short notice, unlike with your GP. However, it will cost you. But the staff are really knowledgeable and you will get some great travel tips into the bargain. And you'l probably buy umpteen necessary travel items you had also completely forgotten to think about. The range of stuff they stock is of a good quality and ranges from the cheap to the more luxury. It's worth going here early on if you are planning a big trip abroad as you can pick up a lot of information just by chatting to the really friendly staff.

nomad travel clinics

Park Street's Nomad store is a great pre-travelling one-stop-shop because not only does it sell travel gear such as backpacks and sleeping bags, but it also has a travel clinic offering advice and vaccines. At a basic level Nomad sells all the obvious essentials such as insect spray and mosquito nets, while at the other extreme it also offers just about every travel gadget you could imagine, from sophisticated GPS navigation tools to elaborate penknives and personal security alarms. The staff at this branch are really helpful, too, so it's a good place to go if you're not sure exactly what you need. The clothing range is all good quality brands, and there's plenty suitable for walking and trekking trips requiring special gear. For those with less ambitious travel plans, Nomad still has plenty to offer - from gadgets that make great presents, such as wind-up torches, to practical walking gear such as boots and gaiters that can be used at home in the UK.

Photo of Chris B.

This is a great camping shop! I really love getting my supplies from here...and, ok, I only go fake camping (at festivals) but I still get excited buying my portable shower and tent pegs and all the other camping paraphernalia I didn't realise I needed or wanted until I went to Nomad. The guys who work here have always been so helpful and friendly, even if Nomad aren't the cheapest all the time I would still go here for the service. There is an abundance of camping shops in Bristol, some are better than others and stock slightly different things but Nomad really cater for the camping enthusiast (or weirdo), the part-timer and the yuppie student traveller. They are also travel aficionados and real exerts on the subject; being in a position to offer medical advice as a high street shop is no easy thing. They have a great range of accessories and will help you find anything you need.

Photo of Qype User (maxmcc…)

If your about to head off abroad, or maybe just an adventure, then Nomad is you pre-trip pit stop. You can get all the necessary clothing, equipment, vaccines, sandals for the feet and bottles of deet. They administrate Yellow Fever jabs, which you can't get in a lot of NHS medical surgeries so check that out if you need it for your travels.

Yamal Travel Guide - the Land of Nomadic Nenets

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / Yamal Travel Guide – the Land of Nomadic Nenets

As the world gets smaller, there’s a desire to go further – and there are just a few places as enchantingly far away as Yamal. One of the last refuges of Russia’s nomadic reindeer herders, it is so far north that most of it is located beyond the Arctic Circle.

‘Yamal’ means ‘edge of the world’ in the language of the indigenous Nenets people. Here, the Nenets carve out a unique way of life, seemingly at the limits of human tolerance.

Table of Contents

Why visit Yamal

The nenets – the world’s last nomadic reindeer herders.

Centuries ago, hundreds of nomadic tribes roamed vast areas of the planet, but today, nomadic culture is rapidly dying out. Because the local nomads – Nenets (also known as Samoyed) have remained isolated from the modern world in one of the most inhospitable environments on earth, they remain among the last ethnic groups to still practice a completely nomadic way of life.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

With a population of over 41,000, the Nenets are one of the largest indigenous groups in Northern Siberia, with the majority living in Yamal. For most of their existence, all the Nenets practiced a nomadic way of life. By herding reindeer and migrating twice a year to warmer pastures within their territory, the Nenets adapted to survive the harsh conditions and freezing temperatures above the Arctic Circle. The reindeer-herding Nenets are famed for having the longest migration routes on earth, relying entirely on wooden sledges for transport over the heavy snow and frozen rivers of the Arctic.

Nenets religion and beliefs

The traditional religious conceptions and customs of the Nenets fall within the general definition of Siberian shamanism. The shamans, of whom there were several categories, were the principal mediators between humans and spirits. The latter used to be represented by anthropomorphic wooden idols, of which great numbers were assembled in the sacred places of the Nenets.

As the Russians moved into Siberia and other remote parts of Russia, indigenous people were forced off their land and they began encroaching on Nenet land. During the 1930s, Nenet spiritual leaders and shamans were exiled. After the Russian Revolution, the Nenets culture suffered due to the Soviet collectivization policy. The government of the Soviet Union tried to force the nomadic Samoyeds to settle down permanently. They were forced to settle in villages and their children were educated in state boarding schools, which resulted in the erosion of their cultural identity. Many, especially in Yamal lost their mother tongue and became assimilated.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

During the last few centuries the traditional religious conceptions came to be mixed with elements of Christian origin, and figures from the Orthodox pantheon, notably Nikolai Chudotvorets, or Mikulay in Nenets, were adopted as patrons. Officially, Christianity reached only the western Tundra Nenets, whereas some of the eastern groups preserved shamanism until the Stalin period. Today the shamanist worldview seems to have largely vanished in favor of the official materialistic ideology.

The Nenets are reluctant to talk to outsiders about their spiritual beliefs. They are not afraid of mixing with the modern world. They use radios, TVs, and reject what they don’t feel the need. Nenet children are still required to attend Russian-language schools.

Nenets culture

For the Nenets, the reindeer, one of the few animal species with the ability to survive the sometimes brutal, blizzard-blown conditions of far northern Siberia, is everything. Reindeers are used for transport, clothing, building, milk, meat, blood and fat. As one of the few food sources available, the Nenets rely on reindeer meat for subsistence throughout the year. Freshly butchered deer are usually eaten raw, and the Nenets are also partial to drinking the blood – although for guests, partaking in this practice is optional!

The Nenets wear clothing made of reindeer fur, sewn together using reindeer sinew, and live in conical tents made of reindeer bone and hides, known as chums .

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia,Yamal Peninsula travel guide

The Nenets diet contains mainly of bread and reindeer meat. When freshly slaughtered, reindeer are typically served raw and still warm (including the fresh blood, a nutritious drink). Otherwise, the meat is frozen for year-round safekeeping. The Nenets supplement their diet with other protein sources when available such as white salmon and other fish. During summer months, they also gather cranberries or other forest fruit for making tea.

While the Nenets struggle to keep their culture alive against the mounting pressure of climate change and industrialisation, outside interest in culturally respectful, eco-tourism provides a glimmer of hope that the last of the world’s nomadic reindeer herders can hold on to their traditional way of life into the next few generations.

“These are indeed people who live in a totally different dimension.” – Russian archeologist Andrei Golovnev told National Geographic. “They do not want to be the same as everyone else. They just want to be who they are.

Homestay with Nenets

There’s really only one reason foreign tourists brave the lengthy travel times and intimidating climactic conditions that await them in Yamal: they have come to observe and participate in a way of life that has, against the odds, remained relatively unchanged for around 2,000 years.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

With no hotels, no stores, no modern communication and very few places to find shelter from the elements, the only way to visit Yamal’s Arctic region and Polar Ural Mountains is to stay with the Nenets in their nomad camps. The whole idea behind a homestay with the Nenets is to immerse yourself in their daily lives, culture and customs. Generally, you’ll be sharing a chum with a host family, giving you the chance to bond with your hosts and enjoy more opportunities to exchange experiences and ideas. During your stay, the locals will go about their daily lives, but will invite visitors to watch or lend a helping hand, as long as you’re physically able and comfortable with the task at hand. Who knows, you might find you have a special talent for lassoing reindeer, chum building or sledge assembly!

nomad travel clinics

You’ll also have the chance to involve yourself in the preparations for making new campsites, sledding into the forest to cut trees for firewood, collecting ice or snow for water, sewing fur clothing and other activities essential for survival, relaxation and social bonding within the community. While the Nenets are extremely hard workers, many are often eager to socialise with their temporary guests, and it’s common for Nenets to sit together and converse around the open fire after dinner.

Experience the reindeer migration with the Nenets

The few visitors who do make it to the isolated Yamal, generally come to experience and participate in the Nenets annual reindeer migration events . The migration to and from Yamal’s summer pastures is carried out each year by the indigenous Nenets, traveling across ancient migration routes in the tundra as they have for thousands of years.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

Accompanied by herds up to 10,000 strong, twice a year, the Nenets complete the world’s longest nomadic migration. Before winter temperatures in the Yamal Peninsula can plummet to an unfathomable -50°C, the Nenets must move their reindeer further south to the moss on lichen pastures in the southern taiga.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

Every Spring, the Nenets then shift their enormous herds north to summer grazing grounds in the Arctic Circle. This massive journey (which even seasoned travel photographers and adventure travellers often describe as one of the most spectacular experiences of their lives), usually starts in mid-March through to mid-April. During this period, temperatures are still freezing, as part of the journey for some groups of Nenets involves crossing a wide expanse of the frozen Ob River, or moving to the Polar Mural Mountains.

The Spring reindeer migration sees thousands of reindeer and their herders travelling anywhere between 250km to 1,000km along the Yamal Peninsula to the Kara Sea, covering around 25km per day.

The Autumn migration starts near the end of September and runs through to mid-October. During this time, it’s possible to see vivid patches of greenery and wildflowers as the seasons change – these months are slightly warmer than the Spring migration. Depending on the weather, the nomad camps can be shifted almost every day, or a couple of days per week. In favourable conditions, the Nenets may spend several days or weeks in one place, repairing sledges and chum coverings before moving on.

Migration involves the chums being taken down and packed on to hand-made, wooden, reindeer-drawn sledges, along with all their possessions. The reindeer herd are then collected and harnessed to the sledges. The entire camp is then transferred by sledge, moving anywhere between 3 to 60km to a new spot for re-establishing the chums. A single move can take between 12 and 24 hours.

If you join a migration tour , keep in mind that during the migration, you’ll be outside the entire time, with no protection from the elements other than your clothing.

Joining a reindeer migration is about as far from a mainstream holiday as you can get, but for inquisitive, intrepid and physically fit adventure travellers, the chance to experience the nomadic lives of the Siberian people is an unforgettable, once in a lifetime event.

See below some common Reindeer migration routes:

Nenets migration routes map

The Reindeer Herders Festival

If you don’t wish to join the Nenets on their annual migration trips, we’d have to say the best time of the year to visit Yamal is during the end of March through to early April. This is the time when the nomadic Nenets from across the Yamal Peninsula travel in their family groups to celebrate the one-day Reindeer Herder’s Festival. Held annually in different cities and villages of Yamal, the festival usually takes place on the last Saturday of March (in Salekhard) and the 1 st Saturday of April (in Aksarka village).

For the Nenets people, a festival day is a major event. Herders from all over the tundra bring their families to town to sell their crafts and other wares, meet with friends and compete in rough-and-tumble contents of physical skill. Events held on the day include reindeer wrangling, sledge races, axe throwing and tug-of-war. Wandering the festival grounds, you’ll be able to pop inside the specially erected chums and taste unique Arctic delicacies such as stroganina (cloudberry jam). The Nenets women cut striking figures against the pure white snow, dressed in their brightly coloured traditional outfits.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

The Reindeer Herder’s Festival has also become an event in which the Nenets are able to share with the world a fascinating slice of their unique culture. On a Yamal tour during the festival season, you’ll also have the chance to stay with a Nenets family far from the city, giving you an amazing opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the nomadic way of life. With a bit of luck, at this time of year, you might even get to witness the Northern Lights streaking across the pristine polar sky.

An opportunity to experience the Northern Lights in Yamal

With most of Yamal sitting above the Arctic Circle, the region is one of the best destinations in Russia to observe the fantastic spectacle of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

The Aurora Borealis is usually observed during winter, most commonly between September and May, and best of all in January and February. The prime season for catching this spectacular celestial light show is the New Moon in February, when the Aurora is commonly sighted for around two weeks straight.

February, deep winter in Yamal, is one of the few months the Nenets don’t migrate. On the other hand, it can be a great time to experience a more relaxed homestay with the Nenets, as long as you can withstand the extreme cold!

When to visit Yamal

So basically, the best time to visit Yamal is spring, starting from the end of March till May. During this time, while you still see the Russian Arctic in her winter beauty and the Nenets will be wearing their traditional winter clothes, the weather is not that cold and the daylight is much longer than in winter. Also, the Reindeer Herders Festival takes place at the end of March and the migration starts in mid-April.

With almost the entirety of its territory above the Arctic Circle, Yamal is completely ice-bound for seven to nine months of the year. In deepest winter, darkness shrouds the peninsula, snow piles up metres high and on the very coldest days see the temperature plummet to below – 50°C. The coldest months are January and February when the average temperature lies between -24°C and -28°C. For much of the short summer season, the sun never dips below the horizon, lighting up the vast tundra and muskeg landscape 24 hours a day. The warmest months of the year are July and August, with average temperatures around 5°C on the Arctic Ocean coast of the Kara Sea, up to 10°C in the Yenisei Gulf.

Temps and daylight hours in Yamal

Getting there and around.

Nearly all tour groups and independent travellers begin their journey deeper into the Yamal region from Salekhard, the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region.

Salekhard is the only city in the world, located directly on the Arctic Circle. As you might imagine, residents aren’t exactly your everyday small townsfolk, and the city comes across as simultaneously tough and quirky. Russian settlers founded the town on the banks of the Ob River in 1595. It became a popular place for exiling dissidents during the Tsarists and Soviet periods. These days, Salekhard is a thriving, surprisingly prosperous town. In fact, it’s one of the most affluent in the entire Arctic region, thanks to the discovery of nearby oil and gas reserves. For visitors, Salekhard is an interesting place to spend a day or so.

Attractions include:

  • Shemanovskiy Yamal-Nenets District Museum and Exhibition Complex. Compact well-organised and surprisingly engaging, this museum focuses on the anthropological and natural history of Yamal and makes a great primer before diving deeper into the Nenets culture. The most interesting exhibits relate to the relatively recent local discovery of woolly mammoth remains. The highlight is “Baby Lyuba” the mummified body of a mammoth calf which is almost completely intact, despite being approximately 42,000 years old.
  • Odorsky Burg (Master’s Town) .A short walk from the city centre is this small historical replica village. The collection of wooden farmhouses and religious buildings represent how the town might have looked after it was settled by the Cossacks in the 16 th century.
  • Polar Circle Monument . Roughly half of Salekhard lies north of the Arctic Circle. A shiny modern monument marks the Polar Circle’s exact latitudinal line. Worth stopping by for a ‘geography selfie’.
  • Mammoth Monument . A large sculpture of a woolly mammoth stands on the shores of the Ob, close to where several mammoth finds have been uncovered. There’s not much else to look at but getting there requires crossing an impressive frozen bridge over the icy Ob River.

By air from Moscow or St Petersburg

By far the easiest way to reach Yamal is by air. Yamal Airlines flies once per day between Moscow, St Petersburg and Salekhard, and the flight time is just under three hours and costs about US $150 one way.

By train from Moscow

If you are planning to arrive to Yamal y train, your final stop will be Labytnangi, which be reached via two to two and a half-day train trip from Moscow. From here, you will need to get to Salekhard by car, over the frozen ice of the Ob River. In the summer, the two towns are connected by a ferry route.

Note that some parts of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region may require a special Border Zone permit for outsiders to be granted access. Your tour agency will advise you in advance if you need to apply for this permit for your particular trip. If your tour requires this permit, it must be arranged 2 months in advance.

Eating and sleeping in Yamal

Food and accommodation in salekhard.

As the prosperous polar city of Salekhard slowly begins to receive more outside visitors, the options for accommodation in town are slowly on the increase. Don’t come to Salekhard expecting luxury – however, there is a reasonable choice of two and three-star tourist guesthouses and business hotels located in the centre of town. Salekhard has quite a decent selection of restaurants and cafes serving Russian, international and traditional Yamal cuisine. Breakfasts are typically included with your hotel stay, while meals run at approximately 1,300 RUB (US $20) for lunch and about 2,000 RUB (US $30) for dinner.

Beyond Salekhard

Once you move beyond Salekhard, deeper into the tundra and the territory of the nomadic Nenets, you’ll be sleeping in the reindeer camps inside the chums, generally sharing a chum with a host family. The chums are cosily warm even during the harshest winters, heated by an open stove and the heat kept in by a covering of thick reindeer hide.

On some group tours, a private chum for the group may be a possibility for those not wishing to stay with a Nenets family. The Nenets however, are sociable and curious and generally happy to talk to visitors and exchange experiences and ideas after a long day maintaining the camp.

Meals and eating customs in the Nenets camp

Once at camp, visitors usually subsist on the typical nomadic diet, mostly made up of preserved meat, fish, bread, jam, condensed milk, biscuits and tea. Soup, rice, pasta, noodles and other packaged foods are usually also provided or can be purchased beforehand in Salekhard.

While Nenets mostly eat reindeer meat raw, you certainly won’t be expected to do the same. As long as you show respect for their customs, you can choose whether to partake or not. It should be remembered that this is intended to be a culturally immersive experience, with everything that entails.

Tour packages in Yamal Peninsula

Due to the extreme remoteness of the Yamal Peninsula, and the logistical and communication challenges involved in organising a homestay with the Nenets, we strongly advise that visitors travel to Yamal on an organised tour . Your tour organisers will arrange your stay with one of the Nenets groups open to receiving visitors. They should also arm you with all the information you’ll need to prepare for a trip to one of the coldest and least-visited populated regions on the planet.

56 th Parallel offers a number of culturally immersive tours to the Yamal Peninsula during the key periods of the spring and autumn reindeer migrations, and the annual Reindeer Herder’s Festival. We also offer a winter photography tour (outside the migration season) offering a homestay with the Nenets and exceptional conditions for hunting the Northern Lights over the tundra over the star-strewn Arctic winter sky.

Moscow, Russia: Safety and Travel Insurance Advice

Travel Insurance and Advice for Visitors to Russia

At one time, Russia was a world leader in international healthcare. Unfortunately, since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, funding has declined, and services have become substandard. According to a 2000 WHO report ranking the world’s top healthcare systems, Russia ranked 130th. Our advice is to plan carefully and make sure you have the resources available to address any emergency that may come up during your travels.

Visitors Insurance Cover in Russia for Travelers

For those traveling to Russia for holidays, work, or educational purposes, a high-quality travel insurance plan is a necessity. You want to make sure you have coverage for emergency medical expenses, trip interruption, medical evacuations, and more. Some plans also cover trip cancellation, which will reimburse you if you can’t travel for covered reasons.

Trip Cancellation Plans for Travel to Russia

You want to include trip cancellation and other travel insurance benefits for the most comprehensive travel insurance . Here is an option for US citizens traveling abroad and visiting Russia.

Safety Tips for Visitors to Russia

Despite being a developed country, visitors and foreigners should not drink tap water in Russia as the tap water may cause diseases due to improper sanitation. Regular bathing with the water is not a cause for concern but you should use bottled water for drinking and for brushing your teeth. The water can be particularly high risk in St. Petersburg where the pipes are very old. In case of an incident, while traveling or living there, it’s important to make sure you have international medical insurance .

It is also advisable for visitors to not drink unlabeled vodka. Russia is known for its love of vodka, but bootleg vodka can cause serious harm and even death. This is because it may contain shoe polish, sawdust, paint thinners, or other dangerous ingredients. Make sure you only drink vodka that was purchased from a store, is sealed, and is labeled properly.

While in Russia, especially the major cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, passports should be kept on your person in a secure, hidden place (such as a money belt). It is important to have your passport with you if you have any interaction with the police as not having it may cause them to harass, fine, or arrest you.

If you do emergency assistance help while traveling in Russia, call the single emergency hotline by dialing 112. You will be put in touch with an emergency call center that will field requests to medical or police assistance.

Vaccines Required and Necessary Medicines when Traveling to Russia

All travelers to Russia should be up-to-date on routine vaccines such as MMR (measles-mumps-rubella), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio, flu, etc. Visit the Center for Disease Control website for current information. Travelers are encouraged to get the Hepatitis A shot due to a high risk of consuming contaminated food and water. Hepatitis B is recommended if you plan on having sex or getting a tattoo or piercing. Many vaccine clinics offer Hepatitis A and B together in the same shot. The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors in remote areas. Finally, travelers spending time outdoors or with animals should also get the rabies vaccine.

Talk to your doctor about other issues you might encounter such as motion sickness and jet lag. On long flights, be sure to walk around the cabin and drink plenty of fluids. It is also important for visitors to be aware that AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in Russia. Many citizens are not educated when it comes to sexual health, so it’s vital to be proactively protected and educated yourself.

When Should You Travel to Russia?

The main tourist season in Russia is July and August due to warmer temperatures. This is also the time of “White Nights” in which the sun doesn’t fully set in some areas of the country. However, crowded cities can become uncomfortably hot during these months. Winter is the off-season which means better bargains, better service, and fewer crowds.

In March and April, as the snow melts, the roads become slushy and dangerous. In May and June, to welcome in the warmer weather, Moscow, and St. Petersburg both have festivals including the Ballet Award Festival, Chekov International Theater Festival, and the Sobinov Memorial Festival of Music. During November, March, and late August, airfare is generally cheaper than at other times of the year. This is because the weather is uncertain during those months.

Weather Conditions

Contrary to what you might believe, Russia is not just full of ice and snow. The climate is actually quite agreeable in spring, early summer, and fall. However, during the months of November to February, Russia does get quite cold, and winter can bring large amounts of snowfall. During the winter months, it is recommended that you bring a heavy winter coat, gloves, hat, scarf, and other winter gear to stay warm. Falling snow and enormous icicles can be deadly, so avoid walking directly under building overhangs. Slip-and-fall accidents are quite common due to icy conditions, so be sure to wear sturdy boots that have good traction. Always plan ahead and check the weather report to avoid any weather-related injuries during your stay.

Safety While Traveling Around Russia

Russian drivers are known for their extremely high speed. In the cities, it is important to know that pedestrians do not have the right-of-way. Heavy traffic may cause drivers to drive on the curb or sidewalk to avoid delay.

When traveling by train, be vigilant of your surroundings as other travelers might see you as an easy target. If other passengers ask you to drink and dine with them, be sure to stay sober and keep a watchful eye on your possessions as train hoaxes can target tourists and expatriates.

Enjoy Your Visit – Be Safe and Have Fun

Russia is a fun and interesting place to visit, and with a little precaution, planning, and trip insurance protection , travelers can have a worry-free trip of a lifetime.

Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning nine time zones across Eurasia. Due to its massive size, the country is home to a variety of landscapes and ethnic groups. The country is known for its vast natural resources and is one of the largest producers of oil and gas globally. These reasons and much more are what draw tourists,  missionary groups , volunteers, and  expatriates  alike to visit Russia for both long and short periods of time. Before taking off, travelers should be aware of safety and health issues so that they can enjoy their visit to Russia.

Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport terminal project nears completion

Exterior view of an airport as seen from the tarmac.

The Palouse’s new air travel hub is nearing completion and set to open to the public later this month.

The Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport’s new 47,000 square foot terminal is opening May 22 after two years of construction . The $92 million project includes a brand new terminal nearly six times larger than the existing structure, as well as an additional 4,500 square foot expansion debuting later this summer.

Airport officials hosted a pre-opening tour of the new facility for Palouse-area media on Tuesday.

The new terminal includes capacity for three ticket counters, two TSA screening lanes and three rental car counters. Private charter security screenings will also be available in August with the completion of the western expansion. Passengers arriving into Pullman will no longer have to brave the weather conditions outside, and will instead pass through a modern security gate inside the terminal building.

In spite of the changes, Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Board Chair and Pullman Mayor Francis Benjamin said the security experience is still likely to be the fastest passengers have experienced with air travel.

References to the Palouse and its institutions of higher education will be evident throughout the new airport. Artistic depictions of the Palouse punctuate each ticket counter, while Washington State University and University of Idaho iconography will be visible throughout the site. Glenn Johnson, longtime Pullman mayor and voice of the Cougs , welcomes visitors to the terminal and provides pre-boarding instructions.

WSU and UI, both heavy users of the airport, provided a joint $1 million in support for the project in 2021, with the cities of Pullman and Moscow contributing a further $2 million each.

A wooden bench curving left and right outside a TSA screening area in an airport.

Art Bettge, vice-chair of the airport board, noted during a tour of the facility that between the new terminal and the runway project completed in 2022, the Palouse has seen $250 million in investments for a local cost of about $18 million. The lion’s share of the two project’s funding has come from federal sources.

Unlike most airports, summer represents a slowdown for the airport, giving staff time to adjust to the new facilities before the number of flights is expected to pick up in the fall. The airport currently offers two flights to Seattle daily through Aug. 15, with that number rising to five or six thereafter with the addition of a daily flight to Boise. Additional destinations are also being considered.

The new terminal includes seating for upwards of 160 people, an outdoor seating area, a service animal relief area, and space for concessions both pre- and post-security screening. Approximately 70 people work at the airport, with additional staffing needs likely once the new terminal is fully online.
