Venice (Ravenna)

Built more than a century ago along the Adriatic coast, 11 kilometres north-east of Ravenna, it can be reached by an extension of national highway 67 (Tosco-Romagnolo). Situated to the south of the port-canal, it is the main resort of the Ravenna Riviera and it has a tourist-hotel organisation tried and tested by experience and tradition. Marina di Ravenna has been devoted to tourism since the 30's when it took its present name and town planning structure, with wide avenues immersed in the green, beautiful villas surrounded by parks, hotels and restaurants much appreciated for their fish dishes in accordance with a still alive seafaring tradition. The large and safe harbour with eight hundred berths, the broad sandy beach, served by modern bathing equipment, have made Marina di Ravenna a place of great tourist attraction. Marina di Ravenna can be recognised by the lighthouse which is its monument and also its symbol.

Thira/Santorini

Fira is a comparatively modern town, with houses built mostly during the 19th century when the old Venetian capital at Skaros became untenable due to earthquakes. The architecture is a jumble of Cycladic and Venetian, side by side, the similarities between the two being the stark whiteness. The impact of Aegean tourism has made itself felt in Fira, judging from the abundance of taverns, hotels, discotheques and shops. It is the largest town on the island and has gained preference with travelers because it is central and access to other parts of Santorini is made easy by either taxi or bus. From there you can indulge in some inspiring coastal walks. Wandering through the white cobbled streets of Fira, a town of about 2,000 inhabitants, one gets the feel of the old-world charm blended in with the modern day comforts. The town's archaeological museum is crammed with finds from excavations at Akrotiri. But besides being so interesting archaeologically, Santorini is essentially a beauty spot, an island whose cliffs seem to glow under an exceptionally clear light all day, but which at sunset glow redly, evoking that vast explosion more than 3000 years ago.

Athens/Piraeus

Today Piraeus is the home base of Greek shipping, the largest commercial fleet in the world, apace bound to the sea like few others. The harbours of Zea and Mikrolimano as well as Phaliro play host to countless yachts and sailing craft throughout the year. Piraeus was known in medieval times as Porto Leone, a name due to the enormous stone lion, which guarded the port's entrance. Today, the life of Piraeus is centred on its three ports: the main, central one and those of Zea and Mikrolimano. You can walk around the central harbour, shared by cargo and passenger ships alike, and watch the constant comings and goings of goods and people from around the world. Having completed your tour of the central harbour of Piraeus you will then head south traversing the peninsula and arrive at Peiraiki, one of the most picturesque neighbour hoods in the city. Here one finds the harbour of Zea, one of the largest marinas in the Mediterranean. If the night finds you in the area, you can try one of the many bars found nearby. You can continue your tour along the waterfront heading towards Kastella but a small deviation toward the city centre will be useful for then you can visit the verdant square of the municipal Theatre with cafeterias and shops of all kinds surrounding it. The magnificent building housing the Municipal Theatre as well as the Town Hall and the Library complete the picture presented by the main square in the city. Piraeus's little natural harbours are among its busiest and most touristy areas: Mikrolimano, Passalimani, Zea, Freatida and Hatzikiriakio. Countless seaside tavernas provide delicious seafood washed down with the uniquely Greek drink, ouzo. The fresh smell of the sea and the sounds made by the assortment of caiques, yachts and sailing ships, which are moored next to the tables, complete the enjoyment of the food Beyond the port, the most impressive spots are the hills of Profitis Ilias and Kastela with their neoclassical mansions and modern buildings which look as they are hanging over the sea.

Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovcen. Characterized by winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral. It's also home to the Maritime Museum, which explores local seafaring history. Sveti Ðorde, one of 2 tiny islands off the ancient town of Perast, features a centuries-old church.

The City of Split marks 1700 years since the beginning of the construction of Diocletian's Palace. Split, a city where every epoche since antiquity has left its traces, was conceived within the walls of the palace which was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian as his private residence. The well-preserved palace has been listed as UNESCO's register of the worlds cultural heritage. During these 1700 years plus, Split has played an important role in Croatian history. Today, Split is the center of cultural and scientific life, with many institutions, museums, gallerys and theatres. Split is the second biggest city of Croatia. Due to its central position on the Adriatic coast and its exceptional environment, Split soon developed into the leading and biggest city of South Croatia, its large port, commercial and industrial center and an important European touristic resort. The present city of Split is an organic fusion of its antique heritage and of modern architecture, set up in the beautiful Mediterranean environment and full of a sober and thoughtful atmosphere of a big city.As the scientific centre of the region, Split's scientific institutions have had remarkable results in many fields including the protection and study of cultural and natural heritage, oceanography, fishery, Adriatic agricultural cultures, etc. Split is also known for great accomplishments in sports, notably basketball, soccer, tennis, handball, rowing, sailing, and waterpolo. Split hosted the Mediterranean Sport Games and the European Athletic Championships. Split is connected by rail to the hinterland, by ferry boats to the Adriatic islands, Italy and Croatia, and to the rest of the world by its international airport.

To get on a cruise and visit the Greek islands it is important to make your reservation in advance, especially in high season. Tickets are purchased through this agency, Greca Viajes.

The cruise routes skirt mainland Greece and reach the nearest islands, usually several of the Cyclades. There are also routes between Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, and Samos, at the southern end of the Northeastern Aegean.

You can ask Greca Viajes for the ship's plan. This elaborate layout, on which all stateroom numbers are noted, may seem overwhelming at first, but closer inspection will show you all the amenities available on the decks.

Staterooms generally have two berths - four in some cases - and outside staterooms are the most expensive. Those in the central area are the most economically stable and the higher you are, the more expensive the cabins are.

Best Time to Travel

While it is perfectly possible to tour the Greek islands via cruise ship from March through November, the best time to embark is from mid-May through late June.

The days are usually mild, even hot, but dry at the same time, and the seawater is warmed by the sun. While mid-summer evenings are ideal for outdoor dining at cruise ship buffets.

Spring is also the perfect time to explore the cities, and there are far fewer tourists than in summer.

If you're not a fan of crowds, and beaches are not on your agenda, April and May are good times to tour the country.

As for festivals, the carnival season and Greek Easter, with its processions, lambs, and red eggs, are the highlight of the season.

Slow and Fast Ferries in the Greek Islands

Apart from cruises, the Greek islands are also crossed by ferries, which do not leave every day from all destinations and may suspend their service as soon as bad weather appears.

Ferries, except in calm waters, are rather slow and are not advisable for those prone to seasickness.

The slow ferries, on the other hand, cover the main routes, and in summer the smaller and faster ferries operate between the Greek islands.

Local slow ferries, regardless of size, are subject to official fares. Tickets are also purchased through Greca Travel.

Greca generally recommends slow ferries as the first contact with the Aegean Sea makes the trip more enjoyable.

You should also pay close attention to the destinations. If you take a ferry from Athens to Mykonos, for example, the boat does not usually make a direct destination but passes first through Syros and Tinos, and then Mykonos.

These vessels have the advantage of offering direct links and avoiding the hassle of calling at mainland ports.
