When to Visit Colleges

Event: for parents: how to plan a college visit, how to schedule your campus visits.

Visiting a college campus is one of the most exciting steps in choosing a college. It’s best to visit colleges before your applications are due. That way, you can be confident you'd be happy at any college you're applying to.

It's also best to go when the college is in session. You'll see the campus when classes are meeting and day-to-day activities are in full swing.

How to Pick a Date

Here are some guidelines on when to visit. Plan your visit well ahead of time. That way you can make sure you see what you need to see and meet with the people who can tell you what you need to know.

During the Week

Mondays through Thursdays are ideal for visits because you can get a good idea of what campus life is like. Visiting on a Friday may not be as practical. Students, faculty, and staff might be busy with social activities starting Friday afternoon.

High school holidays that fall on Mondays are often perfect opportunities for making college visits. Many colleges are in session on these days─and you won't be missing any of your high school classes.

The Best Seasons

The spring of your junior year is a good time if you've already researched colleges. Spring break is also good if you play fall sports or are considering applying under early action or early decision plans, which usually have application deadlines in November of your senior year.

Early fall is also a good time for seniors to visit. That timing can help seniors narrow their college lists.

After You've Been Accepted

Colleges where you've been accepted might invite you to spend a few days on campus before the May 1 reply date. Many schools do this to encourage students they've accepted to enroll. This is an excellent opportunity to make in-depth comparisons between the colleges that have accepted you. If possible, visit with current students who attended your high school.

However, if you're waiting to visit colleges after you've received acceptance letters, remember that you may have only a few weeks to visit and decide. Most colleges mail acceptance letters in April and expect a reply by May 1.

When Not to Go

Check specific dates with each college so you don't arrive when the campus is deserted. You can call the college or look on its website for the academic calendar to find out when breaks, reading periods, and exam periods are scheduled.

Colleges are not in session during:

• Thanksgiving weekend
• Christmas week
• Winter and spring breaks
• Summer, unless there is a summer session

College classes don’t meet during:

• Reading period
• Saturdays and Sundays

The admission office may be closed to visitors at certain times.  For example, admission officers may be too busy to meet with you in May and April — that’s when they’re reviewing applications. Check with the college.

If you are unable to attend an in-pers on college tour, m any campuses now offer virtual tours. In the COVID-19 pandemic, when many colleges and universities were unable to host visiting students and families, the virtual tour became more common.

Taking a virtual tour is a great way to experience a college campus if you are unable to take the time or incur the expense of visiting in person. But it isn’t a replacement for an in-person visit, so if there’s a school you’re really interested in, you’ll want to experience it in person as soon as you can.

There are many advantages to participating in a college visit. Here are a few:

Get a Sense of the Campus

You’ll likely have piles of pretty flyers and catalogs from various colleges by the time you start touring. But there’s nothing quite like setting foot on the campus and walking the grounds yourself. A campus tour gives you a much more personal sense of the college and how you see yourself (or not) spending years there.

Obtain Answers to Important Questions

A college visit is an ideal time to get answers to important questions. With access to students, financial aid and admissions staff, and faculty members, you can learn more about class sizes, campus life, and details about applying and scholarships.

Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask lots of questions . It’s an ideal time to get the information you need to make an informed decision. Here are a few questions you may want to ask during university tours:

• What are your favorite classes and why?
• What are the options for campus dining? What about off-campus options?

When possible, ask to sit in on a class or two while you’re visiting. It’s a great way to see how good the faculty members are … and how engaged students are with their learning. Take a look at different classroom spaces, labs, and, especially, the library. How are students using spaces for their own learning?

Attend an Information Session

Today, a campus tour often starts with an information session. These 45- to 60-minute sessions, often led by an admissions officer, provide detailed information about the school, its history, the application process, and financial aid. In some cases, student panelists are also available to answer questions.

Decide the Kind of College You Want to Apply To

Students have many decisions to make when it comes to applying for college . College campus visits help you fine-tune the type of college you want to attend. Among the considerations a college tour can help with are:

• How large a college do you want to attend? Colleges come in varying sizes, including their campus and student body. Do you want to attend a small college with a student body that’s also small, a medium-sized university or a large institution, such as a state university?
• What type of college do you want to attend? There are many different kinds of colleges. You can choose to attend a liberal arts college, which is typically smaller in size and has fewer degree options. You could also choose a private or public university, which can provide more academic offerings.
• How selective of a college do you want to apply to? Colleges apply different criteria to their admissions selection process. A college tour ca n help you gauge the academic rigor you want to face while studying. The tour can give you a good feel for how your grades and activities stack up.
• What is the return on investment of this college? Even though at first, college seems to be about the dorms, friends and which major you’ll choose, your time in college passes quickly. It’s important now to ask: What is the return on investment of each college I’m touring? Is this college focused on helping me launch my career or graduate school plans after I earn my degree here?

Scheduli ng a college tour is a n important task. Luckily, it’s designed to be an easy process. Often, students will plan to schedule multiple college campus tours in the same geographic region to minimize costs and logistics.

Here’s a step-by-step college tour checklist to help you schedule your tour.

1. Complete College Campus Research to Determine Which Colleges to Visit

Take some time to research the kinds of colleges you want to visit. Think about majors you might want to pursue , and the size and location of colleges you may want, and explore. Speaking with your counselor, teachers, family members, and friends can also help you decide where to go for college visits.

Also think about what your daily life at each school will look like. Will you enjoy living in the dorms, eating the food, using the recreation centers and study spaces, and going to campus-wide concerts and events? Is there a health clinic, clubs you want to join or intramural sports teams? What about religious life opportunities or career advisors? Make sure the campus offers what you need to be holistically happy. 

It’s OK if your list is long to start. You can always whittle it down.

2. Determine When You Should Start College Visits

Looking at various times you can visit colleges is an important part of the planning process. Here’s a closer look at three of the most popular times to do a college campus tour and the pros and cons.

Pro Tip: The earlier you begin the college tour process, the better! Why? Colleges have early deadlines for scholarship opportunities and application plans that offer more benefits. Starting the entire process early puts you ahead of the game!

The summer is one of the most popular times to visit. At big state schools, you’ll likely be a part of large groups of students and families visiting. The biggest advantage of going in the summer is the flexibility you have. You can visit without missing classes or other activities.

However, summertime is not when most students are on campus. The campus will look very different than it does in the fall, winter, or spring. It may also be difficult to visit classes unless the college offers a summer term. Many faculty also do not go to campus during the summer.

Spring or Winter Break

You may need to plan a college visit for when you are not in school. Practically speaking, these times may be the most convenient for you and your family.

Going to campus during either spring or winter high school break has several advantages. Like in the summer, you will not miss any school or activities. You’ll also be able to visit campuses when students and faculty are around.

Keep in mind, though, that most colleges have a winter break themselves in early January and a spring break in March. Be sure to schedule around these times to fully experience the campus.

Academic Year

During the academic year, you will see the “true” authentic campus in full bloom. Students and faculty will be bustling from class to class, rehearsing music and drama productions, and playing games. It’s a great time to see and feel the campus fully.

It’s also the best time to eat in the dining hall or schedule an overnight visit if offered.

The biggest downside to visiting during the academic year is the frenetic pace of the campus. If you are not used to a college environment, it can be an overwhelming experience. That’s why many students choose a summer visit instead.

3. Schedule Your Visits Through the University Website

You can schedule your campus visit through a college or university website. You’ll be able to select a date and time you want to visit. You’ll also select whether you’re a high school or college student and when you intend to enroll. Some colleges ask if you have a preferred major – don’t worry if you do not! It’s common nationally for new students to not know what they want to major in or to change their major. Programs like this one can help.

You’ll enter basic biographical information, such as name, address, gender identity, and birthdate. You’ll also submit contact information and whether you have needed accommodations. Some even ask for your T-shirt size!

4. Plan Your Campus Visit

Before you visit the campus, think about what you really want to know and the questions you want to ask. This visit is such an ideal time to learn all you need to know about a college.

Look into what the scheduled tour will and won’t cover

Often, college websites detail what locations and information are included on the campus tour. If not, feel free to call or email the admissions office to learn the specifics.

Determine the other areas of campus you would like to see

You may be interested in certain aspects of a college campus that are not a part of the basic tour. Be sure to make a list of the things that are important to you. These may include dormitories, classrooms, performance spaces, athletic facilities, Greek houses or dining halls. You can always ask about how to access these facilities if they are typically closed to visitors.

Download and print a college campus map

A college map is a great resource before, during and after your tour. The map will help you find parking lots available to visitors, determine walking distances and show where everything on campus is located.

Figure out where you want to stay

Many admissions offices provide a list of nearby accommodations. Some even have arranged for discounted rates for visiting students and families. And some universities even have their own hotels on campus with discounted rates for prospective families.

7 Tips for an Effective College Visit Season

How can you get the most out of your college tour? Here are a few tips.

1. Plan your college visits from your least favorite college to the most

A lot can change from the time you build your list of potential colleges to actually seeing them. One way to sort through your list is to start with those that are not on the top of your list and work upward.

2. Establish a budget for your visits

There are expenses associated with a college visit. You should make sure you have a budget that includes travel, hotel, meals, and souvenirs.

3. Determine beforehand what questions to ask during your college tour

No one will grade you on the questions you ask on you r college tour. However, it’s import ant to have a list of questions you want to have answered during the visit.

4. Plan what you are going to wear for each campus visit

There are no requirements on what to wear to a college visit. You do not have to dress formally. However, you do want to be presentable and avoid inappropriate or offensive clothing.

5. Research the local communities near each campus

You will venture off campus during your time in college. Be sure to plan some time to explore the neighborhood around the campus and in the surrounding community. Ask about restaurants, museums, green spaces, and recreational options. To begin, you and your family will need to explore what times of year are best to travel. Some common times to visit schools are during school breaks or summer vacations. However, if you hope to see more activity on campus, then try to plan your visit when classes are in session. 

Next, we recommend setting up a visit with the admissions office. While you can, in most cases, visit a campus without an appointment, the appointment helps you gain access to a tour. It may even allow you to speak with an admissions officer. Ideally, you will book this appointment a few months before the visit. If you find yourself running short on time, you can also show up on campus and take a self-guided tour. The cost of college visits

When first hearing about virtual college visits, many students and families are skeptical about how useful they can be. However, college virtual tours have advanced so much in recent years that many offer a similar, if not enhanced, experience to an in-person visit. 

As we discussed, there are several obvious reasons why college virtual tours are easier than in-person, including the fact that they are free and require little to no planning. In the following sections, we will discover more of the benefits and uses of virtual college tours. We will also discuss how they work and explore some of the best virtual college tours that exist today.

Yes—college virtual tours are absolutely worth your time! Indeed, virtual college tours can be a very good investment of time depending on where you are in your college admissions process. Let’s explore some ways that you can use virtual college visits to aid you in your college decision-making process:

Initial exploration of schools

As a freshman or sophomore in high school, you might not know how to prepare for the college process. Using virtual college tours, you can begin to explore schools and learn about what you like and don’t like in a college. This process can help you stay motivated to work hard as you will visualize your goals with greater clarity. You will also begin to learn what types of schools you are drawn to, which can help you build a college list faster in your junior year.

Exploring more and different schools

In the past, many students were limited to only visiting schools they could travel to. In some cases, leaving their state or country was impossible. How Do Virtual College Tours Work?

As the name suggests, virtual tours happen via a computer, phone, or other piece of technology. However, that can look very different depending on the school you are investigating. As we shared above, many virtual college tours for students include some kind of guided tour of campus, a list of highlights, and student testimonials. However, these items can come in very different formats.

Here are some of the formats you can expect:

Pre-recorded videos.

These can look like videos of a student giving a tour or a video of activities happening around campus. Since these are the simplest version of virtual college tours for students, they are the most common. Schools like Dartmouth , CalPoly , and Vassar all offer pre-recorded tours. 

Interactive videos

Some videos let you click on buildings or landmarks as you watch to learn more. In some cases, you can even enter buildings. To take advantage of this, you will need to be present at the exact time the live stream is being shared. In some cases, you may need to register ahead of time to receive the link. An example of a live tour is at the University of Pennsylvania , where students register ahead of time for a one-hour, live, student-led virtual campus tour.

Live Virtual Tour vs. Pre-Recorded Tour

Take special note of the distinction between live virtual tours and pre-recorded virtual tours. Live virtual tours are being streamed as you watch them, which means you will get a better sense of what is happening right then and there on campus. Sometimes, live virtual tours include a Q&A section where you can ask questions. Meanwhile, pre-recorded virtual tours are less interactive but offer the flexibility of watching them whenever you can.

Princeton’s virtual tour consists of a live-streamed Zoom webinar, where one of their tour guides will take you along with them on their campus tour. 2. Harvard University

Next on our list of best virtual college tours is Harvard University, located in Cambridge, MA. The Harvard virtual tour is self-guided, meaning that you can click around the Harvard virtual tour to see panoramic views of Harvard’s classic New England campus at your own pace. As you can see, not all virtual college visits follow the exact same format. However, there are certainly many opportunities to “visit” a school without ever stepping foot on campus. Next, let’s talk about scheduling and making the most of your college visits.

How To Schedule Virtual College Visits

Now that we’ve gone over some of the best virtual college tours that you can take, let’s talk about some logistics. 

For most virtual college tours, you can take them whenever you want—that’s part of why they’re so great! Whatever your schedule is, you can slide in a college visit on your own time. You could even do a bit of a virtual college visit, take a break, and come back and finish later. It’s totally up to you. 

Schools may ask you for your name and email when you click on their virtual college visits. This is totally fine, and also can work to your advantage. Remember demonstrated interest? You want the college to know that you’ve taken their college campus tours, whether it’s a virtual college visit or in-person. This is especially meaningful in college visits for juniors or seniors.

Even though many virtual college visits can be done on your own schedule, some schools offer live virtual tours. If you want to take one of these college campus tours, you’ll need to sign up in advance. Even though these virtual college tours for students require a little bit more planning, it can be helpful to be in a Zoom with other prospective students and tour guides so that you can ask questions in real time. 

Making the Most of a Virtual College Visit

Even though you might be taking your virtual college tours from your bed, it’s important to still make the most of it. While a virtual tour might not feel the same as in-person college campus tours, there are some things you can do to make the most of the experience. 

Block out dedicated time

At first, virtual college tours for students might not seem very outwardly engaging. However, you should try and make the most of your experience. Don’t multitask, or do college campus tours while you’re watching TV. This is still a college visit, and you want to treat it as such. Immerse yourself in your virtual college visit—you want to get as close as you can to experiencing it in person!

Virtual college visits can serve different purposes for different students. Some students have no idea what they’re looking for from their college campus, and others are already set on what they want their college experience to look like. If there’s a must on your list—for example, if you want a school with a main quad, or a school that’s integrated into a city—see if the school has it!

These are the kinds of things you could ask in an information session or research after your tour.

Thank you for your interest in touring morehouse. we’re here to help you walk in the footsteps of history. we are a private campus, but you can schedule a tour and see morehouse for yourself..

Tours are given Monday-Friday by appointment, except for holidays, academic calendar breaks, testing periods, and other closing dates. There are a limited number of spaces available during the given time slots for guided tours, and space reservations are on a first-come basis. Visitors must register for a campus tour. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept walk-up visitors due to safety reasons.

Family & individual tours: monday – friday 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m..

Family & Individual tours are ideal for prospective students or visitors with parties no larger than five guests. This allows for a more intimate tour tailored to the interest of each family in a smaller group setting. A brief presentation precedes each campus tour. Parties with more than five guests should request a group tour.

Group tour times: tuesday and thursday 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m.,  and 2:30 p.m..

Parties with five or more guests should consider scheduling a group tour so that Morehouse can accommodate your request. We ask that you only register once for the group. Please be mindful that larger tour groups are subject to being split into smaller groups to better serve you.

Group Campus Tour times are aligned to allow our guests to experience the entire Atlanta University Center.  If you plan to tour other AUC Institutions, please contact them directly or visit their websites to book your tour.

COVID and Monkeypox Protocols for Guests

Atlanta University Center Consortium institutions, including Morehouse, adjust COVID-19 protocols based on risk conditions on campus, within the Atlanta University Center, in the local area, and state of Georgia. The protocols are categorized by colors based on the level of risk. Visitors are required to adhere to protocols associated with the AUCC COVID alert levels. The current alert level can be found at the Morehouse COVID and Monkeypox Resource Center.

To gain entry to campus, visitors are required to complete the Morehouse College Health & Safety Campus Tour and Visitation Protocols form.

Tour Duration and Information

Tours are scheduled to last approximately 75 minutes. The tour covers a brief history of Morehouse, admission requirements, costs, a walking tour, a question-and-answer period, a visit to the campus bookstore, and an opportunity to submit an application to Morehouse (application fee waivers will be available during certain times of the year).

Tour Guides

Tours are conducted by trained Morehouse College Student Ambassadors. Our ambassadors know Morehouse’s history, admissions requirements and can answer most visitor questions from their hands-on experience.

Arrival Instructions

Visitors should arrive at least 10 minutes before their scheduled tour. After entering campus, go to the Morehouse College Visitors Center located at the lower level of the Morehouse College Parking Deck. For the benefit of all visitors and in consideration of demanding time schedules, information sessions will begin at the scheduled time. To avoid missing your scheduled tour time, notify the Office of Admissions at (470) 639-0999 at early signs of late arrival.

Inclement Weather

Walking tours are not conducted in the case of inclement weather. This is to protect the safety and welfare of all tour participants. Information sessions are conducted for all visitors during this time. 

Traveling to Campus 

General parking is available in the Morehouse  parking deck  for a nominal fee.

Unloading of bus passengers should take place in front of the Morehouse College Leadership Center at the corner of West End Ave. and Westview Drive. Buses are not allowed to drive on campus.

Modifications and Rescheduling

To make modifications, reschedule, or cancel your campus tour, please refer to your confirmation email. Please communicate any urgent changes to the office directly at (404) 215-2618. How to Visit Campus

What is a campus visit? Is a campus visit worth it? A college tour is the best way to see campus buildings and areas of student life with your own eyes and decide on the best college for you. Read on to learn how to plan your UNH visit and what it will include!

Why should I visit UNH?

Visiting UNH will enable you to see the campus for yourself , including residence halls, dining halls, classroom buildings, student life facilities and so much more. You’ll also be able to ask specific questions you may have about UNH and hear the perspective of a current student (your tour guide).

How can I sign up for a tour and information session?

Who will lead my tour?

Your tour of UNH will be led by a current UNH student tour guide . These students love UNH and can’t wait to share with you everything about campus , talk about their UNH experience and answer all your questions !

How long is a UNH campus tour?

Your tour (including a brief information session at the beginning) will last about  1 hour and 30 minutes total. At the end of this time, you will have the opportunity to ask your tour guide more questions and meet with admissions counselors in Smith Hall, our admissions building. 

What will my campus tour be like?

You'll be walking a lot, so wear comfy shoes and dress for the weather! Your tour guide will stop at various indoor and outdoor locations around campus to talk about that location and answer any questions.

What will my information session be like?

All tours start with a brief information session with UNH undergraduate admissions . This is your chance to learn some background information about our campus and location . It is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have before starting the tour.

Your campus tour is your chance to explore campus fully and learn more about the experience of a real student (your tour guide). Every question is a good question! Here are a few ideas if you're not sure what to ask your tour guide:

Local News | Oberlin Heritage Center offering range of tours during Oberlin College’s commencement weekend

“Commencement weekend has always been a very special part of town and college life in Oberlin,” said Amanda Manahan, museum education and tour coordinator for the Oberlin Heritage Center. “It’s one of the more vibrant weekends, so we enjoy participating in that.”

One of the ways people can participate is a self-guided tablet tour.

A person can check out a tablet that takes them on the Oberlin Heritage Center’s “Picture the Past: Downtown Oberlin or Freedom’s Friends: Abolition & the Underground Railroad” tour.

“We’ve had the outdoor tablet tours for a few years now, and people can come check one out and explore the community at their own leisure,” Manahan said.

Visitors also can take a self-guided tour of the Heritage Center’s Monroe House if they are unable to attend a guided tour, she said.

“For the self-guided Monroe House tours, we know families might not have the time to join us for a full tour or history walk, so we wanted a way for them to access this history in a way that is more convenient to them,” Manahan said.

The guided tours range from 45 to 90 minutes, but there is limited space.

Those tours include Underground Railroad, architecture, civil rights and Oberlin’s origin history themed walks and a tour of the Heritage Center’s Jewett House.

Manahan said the stories in these programs highlight Oberlin’s significant relevance in American history.

“Oberlin history is national history,” she said. “Oberlin has both influenced and reflected what has happened in the United States in the 19th and 20th century.

“We use that history to explore broader American history.”

Manahan said the commencement weekend programs also provide a good opportunity for graduating students and their families to learn about Oberlin.

“It’s nice to recognize where the students’ education fits into the history,” she said. “We hear all the time from alumni who went to Oberlin College, ‘I wish I knew this before I left Oberlin.’

“They might come visit later, but never came here as a student.”

Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences goes ‘On Tour’

Multi-city road tour aims to meet prospective students across texas.

The Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences , AGLS, has hit the road to meet prospective and admitted students across Texas with its inaugural AGLS on Tour series , which started on March 25 and continues through April 14.

AGLS on Tour planned stops in McAllen, San Antonio, Katy, College Station, Fort Worth, Dallas, Tyler and Amarillo. Jeffrey W. Savell, Ph.D., vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, alongside other leaders and students from across the College, is attending every stop of the tour to engage with potential future Aggies.

To register for the remaining tour stops in Fort Worth on April 4, Dallas on April 5, Tyler on April 9 or Amarillo on April 14, visit tx.ag/AGLSinvite .

“AGLS on Tour helps us find and create a personal connection with the best and brightest future generation of Aggies,” Savell said. “We are actively reaching out to the prospective students in hopes of introducing them to our supportive atmosphere and showing them how we are a home for learning, discovery and innovation.”

A time for connection and community

Representing 15 departments and various degree programs, the tour gives admitted and prospective students an interpersonal opportunity to discover how the College can help them reach their career and life goals. In addition to engaging and meeting College leadership and faculty, they will gain insights from current students about their college experiences.

“This tour provides students with an authentic insight into life within our College,” said Robert Sturdivant, development program coordinator, who has been instrumental in making the tour a reality. “Being able to speak with students in person has been impactful. They get to ask questions, meet Aggies and, most importantly, see how a degree from our College is more than education — it’s a lifelong support network.”

Each tour stop lasts four hours, with the first two hours reserved for admitted students and their parents, followed by an open session for any prospective students and their parents. From learning about classes to getting to the most out of the college experience, attendees have a chance to see how the College serves as a launchpad for the next generation of agriculture and life sciences leaders.

“The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is outstanding in many ways, but the people are truly what make it special,” shared Savell. “This tour is to meaningfully connect with students and their parents and directly hear from them, and forge relationships we hope will last a lifetime.”

Thanks to the College of Agriculture Development Council , admitted student attendees are entered into a drawing for a competitive academic scholarship. Light refreshments and appetizers are also provided.

The regular season is coming to a close in time for conference tournament play. Here's a look at the 2024 SEC baseball tournament, which runs May 21-26 at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex in Hoover, Alabama.

2024 PGA Championship: Tournament worker identified as fatal car accident victim outside Valhalla

A man was hit by a shuttle bus in louisville in a fatal accident that delayed the second round of the pga championship.

Round 2 of the 2024 PGA Championship was delayed Friday due to a fatal car accident involving a shuttle bus and a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club at 5:09 a.m. ET. The victim has since been identified as a tournament worker who was attempting to cross the road in front of the property.

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America, which hosts the PGA Championship, said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

"This morning, our city experienced a tragic accident that took the life of John Mills, a Louisvillian who will be greatly missed by his family and our community. Our focus is on this family who lost their loved one. I have spoken with members of Mr. Mills' family to convey our city's condolences," said Mayor Craig Greenberg in a statement. "... We remain focused on the tragic loss of life and will share more information on both of these matters as available."

Subsequent police presence and traffic outside the golf course caused play to be pushed back by 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Championship competitors like Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young elected to ditch their vehicles and walk to the golf course due to the logjam of traffic. Professional golfers such as PGA Championship participant Emiliano Grillo as well as Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell have extended condolences to the family via social media posts. 

Scottie Scheffler was among those aiming to arrive early at the golf course, though a traffic incident involving a police officer led to Scheffler being arrested outside Valhalla at 6 a.m. The world's No. 1 golfer and reigning Masters champion was released on his own recognizance nearly three hours later; he has since returned to the property to begin his second round at 10:08 a.m.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshar released a statement of his own later Friday.

"This morning an incident occurred outside the PGA Championship that resulted in the heartbreaking death of a fellow Kentuckian. Our hearts are broken, and we continue to pray for the victim's family. The events that occurred afterward are the unfortunate result of this tragic incident, and we are hopeful that all parties involved can come to a resolution."

Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is imprisoned in Siberia, was made an honorary fellow of Trinity Hall in recognition of his bravery.

A Russian dissident who is serving a 25-year prison sentence after criticising Russia’s war in Ukraine has written to his former Cambridge University College from Siberia where he is incarcerated.

Dual British-Russian citizen Vladimir Kara-Murza said in his letter to Trinity Hall that “the truth, in the end, does come out stronger”.

He said he was “incredibly honoured” to learn he had been made an Honorary Fellow of the College in recognition of his bravery, adding that “good news are a scarce commodity in a special-regime prison in Siberia”.

The 42-year-old, a journalist and opposition activist, was imprisoned in April 2022 and convicted of treason last year.

He is among a growing number of dissidents held in increasingly severe conditions under President Vladimir Putin’s political crackdown.

The UK Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron, last month called for Russian authorities to “release him immediately on humanitarian grounds”.

Mr Kara-Murza was last year made an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall, where he studied, in recognition of his bravery in speaking out on Russian foreign policy despite the clear danger.

The honour was accepted on his behalf by his wife, Evgenia.

Mr Kara-Murza addressed his handwritten letter to the College’s Master, Mary Hockaday.

He wrote: “Good news are a scarce commodity in a special-regime prison in Siberia, but I was so heartened and so incredibly honoured to learn that I have been inducted among this academic year’s Honorary Fellows at Trinity Hall.

“I would like to convey my most profound gratitude to you, to the College Fellows, and to the entire Trinity Hall family for this humbling recognition from my alma mater.

“It is often said that every historian subconsciously wishes to personally experience the period of his or her study – and, given that among my main topics at Cambridge was the history of the Soviet dissident movement, I suppose I really cannot complain.

“But being a historian also gives the advantage of having a larger perspective – and of being able to see beyond the next turn.

“If the dissident movement in the Soviet Union and other eastern European countries has taught us anything, it is that, however unpromising the odds may appear, the truth, in the end, does come out stronger.

“I look forward to staying in touch and to one day meeting you and joining fellow Trinity Hall members and alumni at our magnificent college, a place like no other.”

He signs off his letter, “Yours ever” followed by his signature.

Mary Hockaday, Master of Trinity Hall, said: “It was humbling to receive this message from Vladimir and wonderful to think that in some small way he was heartened by the news of his Honorary Fellowship.

“He was and remains an excellent historian as well as a courageous political campaigner.

“Trinity Hall aims to foster critical thinking and intellectual resilience in all its students and Vladimir exemplifies this with his reminder that times change and that a longer perspective can be a source of hope.

“However, in the immediate present, we continue to declare his imprisonment a travesty and we add our voice to all those calling for his release.”

Lord Cameron described Mr Kara-Murza last month as a “committed human rights activist striving for a democratic Russia, and an outspoken critic of the war in Ukraine”.

He said the dissident “was considered a threat by the Kremlin” and that “Putin locked him up in a bid to silence him”.

“Russia’s depraved treatment of political prisoners must end,” said Lord Cameron.

Mr Kara-Murza, who twice survived poisonings that he blamed on Russian authorities, has rejected the charges against him as punishment for standing up to Mr Putin.

He likened the proceedings to the show trials under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Mr Kara-Murza has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the “passionate columns” he penned for the Washington Post while in a Russian prison cell.
