Carson Mansion - Victorian built in 1860

The 1884 Carson Mansion may well be the ultimate Victorian.

As one of the most written about, and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps in the United States, the William Carson Mansion epitomizes the range of possibilities for eclectic design expression that created a peculiarly American style of architecture.

Built by lumber magnate William Carson to keep 100 of his workers employed during a slump in the timber industry, the mansion’s towers and turrets, columned porches, multiple gables and ornate gingerbread detail—not to mention the paint job—evoke everyone’s ideal of how a Victorian should look.

Carson asked the Newsom Brothers, respected San Francisco architects, to design a family home that reflected his business success and social stature. The Newsoms responded with an exuberant design that combined many of the current styles including Italianate, Eastlake, Stick and Queen Anne. The mansion that arose on a bluff overlooking Carson’s lumber mills and docks became the pride of the city, and set the trend for a period of highly ornate architecture in Eureka.

The Newsoms also designed the J. Milton Carson House, locally known as The Pink Lady, which William Carson built across the street in 1889 as a wedding gift for his son.

Prominently sited, the extensive grounds provide a substantial pedestal for this sculptured edifice. Eye-seeking and shadow-producing surfaces showcase the use of wood as a building material. This three-dimensional "pattern-book" took over one hundred men over wo years to construct.

Its influence on the design of subsequent buildings in Eureka is readily apparent even today. In addition to the abundant use of redwood, Mr. Carson imported 97,000 feet of primavera or "white mahogany" from Central America, along with other woods and onyx from the Philippines, East India, and Mexico. The elaborate interiors include stained glass, plasterwork, and carved ornaments in exotic woods.

The Carson Mansion was owned by the descendents of William Carson until 1950, when it was sold to the Ingomar Club. The Mansion is privately owned and maintained and is not available for public entry. The private club exists primarily to restore and maintain this incredible architectural gem. There are no tours of the interior. However, visitors are welcome to view the mansion and take photos from the sidewalk.

Carson mansion and the victorian homes of eureka.

Ice cold Moscow mule in my hand, the ascension of the final flight of steps to Carson Mansion’s iconic tower/sun room overlooking the city of Eureka, California seems much less daunting. From here, the city of about 25,000 spreads out along the blue water of Humboldt Bay. The waterfront, now a mix of restaurants, parks, and community spaces, was once a maze of lumber mills and shipping ports. This was the domain of a single man who would come to dominate 19th century Eureka, to bring untold wealth to this Northern California town, and to change the natural landscape of the area. And yet, it is his house that continues to capture the hearts – and Instagram feeds – of visitors to Eureka.

In the early days of California, there were many who tried – and failed – to make it rich at gold mining. Willam Carson was such a man. Born in 1825 in New Brunswick, Canada, Carson arrived in San Francisco in 1849, and made his way up the Eel River to the Trinity Mountains in Northern California. His mining claim never panned out (pun intended), but he would forever leave his mark on the Eel River and Humboldt Bay. In 1850, Carson felled a coastal redwood tree, what is considered to be the first for commercial purposes on Humboldt Bay. By 1852, Carson had left mining for good and moved his business interests into lumber, and two years later shipped the first load of timbered and processed redwood to the growing city of San Francisco, again the first to do so.

Over the next thirty years, William Carson’s Dolbeer and Carson Lumber Company – along with partner John Dolbeer – became the world leader in redwood lumbering, producing an incredible 15,000,000 board feet of lumber per year. The mighty redwood forests, which once stretched from the San Francisco Bay all the way into Oregon were reduced by 95% between timbering and clearing for agricultural use, although in the nineteenth century the trees must have seemed an inextinguishable resource. (Conservation of the redwoods began in 1918, six years after Carson’s death.)

William Carson’s lumber company made him – and the town – incredibly wealthy. When he died in 1912, he possessed an estimated $20,000,000 fortune, worth more than $550,000,000 in today’s dollars. Such a man needed to possess a house to match, so he commissioned Carson Mansion on a small rise in the middle of his lumber yard. Designed by the prestigious San Francisco architects Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom, the home was completed in 1886 at a cost of $80,000 (roughly $2.4 million today), and is one of the best examples of American Victorian architecture in existence.

Slated for demolition in 1950, the building was purchased by a group of local community leaders, and today houses the Ingomar Club, a private club dedicated to the preservation of the Carson Mansion.

For most visitors to Eureka, a street view of Carson Mansion is all that is possible, and what a view it is! You may recognize the facade of the structure, as its outline became that of the Addams Family house, the clock tower on Disneyland’s train station, and more. However, to view the magnificently preserved interior, one must be invited and escorted by a member.

can you tour the carson mansion

John Ash is a retired architect, specializing in the renovation of historic buildings. He is also a member of the Ingomar Club, along with his wife Delores Vellutini, herself a past president of the club, and only the second woman to hold that distinction. (The club is inclusive, although membership is by invitation only, and women and minority members are welcomed as both members and leaders.) John is also my sponsor and tour guide for my visit to the Carson Mansion. We begin in a beautiful event space, the Ingomar’s main dining room, where we order cocktails and he points out the main features, focusing on how this modern addition to the mansion flows seamlessly into the original structure. As in the house itself, no detail is forgotten. Ornately carved ceilings and handrails, beautiful chandeliers, and even the placement of windows to catch the afternoon light are things perhaps only an architect like John would notice. When combined with the atmosphere – he is greeted as Mr. Ash by every person we pass, and yet treated to a casual and warm smile that belies the formality – it is a place I am instantly comfortable, though I know my stay here will be brief.

The house itself is a masterpiece, with much of the exterior and some of the interior design elements being done in Carson’s own redwood. While photographs are not allowed inside, my mind will be forever emblazoned with images of the huge main staircase, turning at right angles as it leads to the second floor, a huge smooth redwood bannister guiding me upward, and of the soft pastel colors warming the intricately carved ceilings with wooden arches framing room entrances. Many of the rooms have been preserved with 19th century furnishings, and John points out some of the original features like gilded mirrors or ornate heating covers. Some spaces have been converted into comfortable sitting rooms for Ingomar members, while an upstairs ballroom now is a magnificent billiard room. Our server, Cory, tracks us down while we tour, providing nourishment in liquid form. And let me tell you, the Ingomar makes one heck of a Moscow mule!

The Ingomar Club has done a spectacular job maintaining Carson Mansion, and when I get back to our table from my tour, I have the chance to say that to Tim Walker, General Manager of the club. A second Moscow mule arrives, and then a dozen of the best Humboldt Bay oysters I’ve ever had. (Did you know that Humboldt Bay provides more than 70% of the oysters for California consumption? I didn’t, either, but if you are lucky enough to come to the Carson Mansion, try the ones with bacon and butter.) The club, while private, has reciprocal membership privileges with similar organizations all over, and even offers out-of-town rates, which make for a fun – if unrealistic – thought.

Carson Mansion may be the most spectacular, but it is by no means the only stunning Victorian mansion in Eureka. With the immense wealth pouring into the town from its place at the pinnacle of the 19th century lumber industry, fortunes were made for plenty of people who desired homes worthy of their newfound wealth and status. Directly across the street from Carson Mansion is the Pink Lady. Under new ownership who have changed the K to a C (as in Pinc Lady), it was formerly the Carson House, a gift of William to his son for his wedding.

To see a whole block full of incredible Victorian facades, drive over to Hillsdale Street (between C and E, and 12th and 13th). Here, it seems every house is a wonderfully upkept Victorian, each featuring different color schemes and adornments. This is far from the only such spot in Eureka; Victorian homes and buildings are all over, and virtually any drive through the city other than staying on US 101 will have you marveling.

William Carson passed away in Eureka in 1912, and the majority of the family left the area in the 1950s, but the legacy of this baron of lumber remains in his home, the stunning Carson Mansion, and in the beauty of the town he helped to enrich.

Note: thank you to John Ash for the incredible tour, to Tim and Cory at the Ingomar Club for the hospitality, and to Julie Benbow at the Humboldt County Visitor’s Bureau for setting it all up. This was an experience I will never forget!

Humboldt — California's Redwood Coast

Witness this iconic example of Victorian architecture, which towers above the Bay in Old Town Eureka. Since 1884, this gingerbread, storybook mansion–a Eureka landmark–has been one of the most written-about, photographed and celebrated Victorian homes in the country. Built by lumber magnate William Carson, it boasts towers and turrets, columned porches, gables and striking ornate details, all topped off with a radical paint job.

Nestled in the heart of Eureka, California, the Carson Mansion stands as an awe-inspiring testament to the opulence and grandeur of American Queen Anne-style architecture. Built in the late 19th century for lumber magnate William Carson, this iconic mansion has captured the imaginations of architectural enthusiasts for generations.

With its elaborate detailing, picturesque turrets, and ornate woodwork, the Carson Mansion is an embodiment of the wealth and prosperity that once thrived in Northern California. In this article, we delve into the fascinating history and exquisite features of the Carson Mansion, unraveling the allure of this remarkable piece of architectural heritage.

The Lumber Baron’s Dream

Constructed between 1884 and 1885, the Carson Mansion was the brainchild of William Carson, a prominent figure in California’s lumber industry. Eager to showcase his success and fortune, Carson commissioned the renowned architect Samuel Newsom to design his opulent residence. Newsom’s vision came to life, resulting in a breathtaking mansion that transcended the boundaries of traditional architecture, and it became a prime example of the Queen Anne style.

An Architectural Marvel

can you tour the carson mansion

The mansion’s legacy speaks to the opulence and prosperity that thrived in the region during this period.

Evolution of Ownership

can you tour the carson mansion

Following William Carson’s passing in 1912, the mansion went through various ownership changes. It served as a private club, a military officer’s club during World War II, and later became the distinguished Ingomar Club, a private social hub that preserved the mansion’s grandeur while making it an integral part of the community.

Preserving the Icon

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971, the Carson Mansion remains a treasured landmark, capturing the essence of Victorian splendor for generations to come. While the mansion is not open for regular public tours, its architectural significance has made it a subject of admiration for photographers, artists, and architectural enthusiasts.

Private Paradise: Inside the Renowned Carson Mansion

This grand home was built with timber money.

Rose Heichelbech

Around the end of the 19th century, California was a booming locale with promising industry. The Gold Rush and railroad expansion had secured the futures of many a Californian, including those who benefitted from the hurry to build. One such businessman was William Carson, a lumber baron for whom progress brought great wealth. His personal mansion, completed in 1885, is now considered the foremost example of Queen Anne architecture in the U.S. However, today the doors of this Eureka, California, mansion are closed to the public.

can you tour the carson mansion

Carson died in 1912 and his descendants lived in this beloved home until it was sold in 1950 to a trust, and it has ever since been a private club. The Ingomar Club is closed to the public, therefore you won’t find all that many images of the interior as it is today circulating online.

can you tour the carson mansion

After the mansion was sold in 1950, the Historical American Buildings Survey was granted access to the building in order to document one of the grandest homes in all the U.S. Despite being captured in these photographs and added to the entries for 1964, curiously the Ingomar Club has declined to apply for registration of the mansion as a historic building.

The grand dame of Victorian homes has 18 rooms and over 16,000 square feet of space. It is said that the reason for the intricate wooden carvings on and in the home were to keep Carson’s lumber men employed during a slump in the market. That’s one way to keep your employees on your side!

can you tour the carson mansion

The mansion was built with every opulence and detail in mind, from the elaborate columns on the front porch to the romantic railings on the widow’s walk to the round hallways that bejewel the second story of this fantastical building. The mansion is mix of late Victorian styles- including Eastlake, Gothic, and Italianate.

The front doors have complex stained glass insets and the very Victorian themes of urns and rosettes can be found throughout the home. Onyx fireplaces, redwood moldings, and mahogany details give an idea of how expensive this home was to build, one of the West Coast landmarks of the Gilded Age.

The mansion was designed by the Newsom Brothers, a well known duo in the area. Many of their buildings still stand, all with the over-the-top style that the Victorians were so overtly fond of.

can you tour the carson mansion

There is another mansion in the town of Eureka also sometimes referred to as the Carson Mansion, however that smaller home was a gift from William Carson to his son, Milton. That mansion is painted pink and for that reason is also referred to as the “Pink Lady”.

can you tour the carson mansion

Today, the Ingomar Club appears inside and out to be largely unchanged since the days when Carson himself lived there, with a great emphasis placed on maintaining the splendid period-appropriate furnishings in every room. Perhaps they haven’t registered the building because the mansion is already being meticulously cared for. Let’s hope that continues so that this piece of history is never lost.

It was cool to finally see Carson Mansion in person after seeing so many pictures over the years. The architecture of this house is just stunning. Carson Mansion is a large Queen Anne style Victorian house in old Eureka that was built in the late 1800's. It is named after multimillionaire lumberman William Coleman Carson. Carson Mansion is four stories and has eighteen rooms. As amazing as this place is to look at, it has this cool creepy vibe to it. The carvings throughout the mansion were handcrafted by wood carvers from around the world. This place is currently owned and occupied by the Ingomar Club. You cannot enter the mansion because it is private property. But photographs are allowed from the surrounding sidewalk. If you want to see the inside of Carson Mansion, you can take a virtual tour on the Ingomar Club website. This is one of the most photographed Victorian houses in the U.S. Across the street is another Queen Anne style Victorian house called the "Pink Lady" which William Carson gifted to his son. I'm a big architecture junkie and appreciate seeing places like this. A must-stop if you are in the Eureka area. It is said that the clock tower at Disneyland's train station was influenced by Carson Mansion.

The Carson Mansion was once owned by lumber baron, William Carson and is said to be a prime example of Victorian architecture in the United States. Now owned by a private club since 1950, the Ingomar Club the building is closed to the public as far as entering the house and the grounds but photo taking from the sidewalk is acceptable to do. You can get various angles of the house just walking down the sidewalk for your photos but it's such a noticeable building in Eureka you can also get vantage points from a distance of the Oldtown area and Woodley Island. Definitely something to see as you take in sights around town. Small children may find the outing tiresome and not enjoy the majestic building but it's something you can totally regulate your time as far as how long you are taking pictures

"Look but Don't Touch" We drove around Old Town Eureka and briefly stopped to admire this ornate Queen Anne style architecture Victorian house. Yup, supposedly this house is the most photographed Victorian home in the U.S. No public tours but you can do a virtual tour on their website. It took two years to build this home for one of NorCal's lumber tycoon, William Carson. If I can only be a fly on the wall to see the detailed work inside, the beautiful stained glass designs and carved ornaments in exotic woods. The Grand staircase and the second floor hallway displayed a lot of the intricate wood work (I viewed the virtual tour on their website). The property now belongs to a private hoity-toity Ingomar Club and continues to draw gawkers like me where we can only get exterior shots of the green-toned mansion. One can be a member by invitation only. There is an initiation fee of $3,500. ¯\_('~')_/¯ Across the street is also another Queen Anne Victorian Carson House known as the "Pink Lady." A plaque in front of the property relates the history of the home (see photo). Well, that's about it... it's creepy beautiful. Review #2516

What a magnificent historical place! First time visiting Eureka and what a treat! My nephew and niece in love were married at this amazing place and it was truly magical! The staff were incredible, the food was simply delicious and we had a great time!!! I had no idea that it's a private club so I definitely feel HONORED to have been able to see this beauty in person and celebrate with our family a special day at a magical place that we will remember for years to come!

A beauty of course but this is not the Carson Mansion. This was originally called The Carson House, then painted pink and called The Pink Lady, now it is run under the business name pincladymansion.com

After taking a random trip to Eureka, my fiance and I decided to Google things to do in Eureka. The Carson Mansion was listed as one of the popular sightseeing attractions, so we decided to pay it a visit. The mansion itself is simply breathtaking, to say the least. You, unfortunately, can't tour the inside of the mansion unless you're in a member of a club. However, you can only imagine how divine the inside looks. There is a plaque nearby with a brief history of the original owner of the mansion and the history of its "daughter mansion" across the street.

Excuse me...EXCUSE ME! Are you a member of the Ingomar Club? I heard only members can go inside, and I've been wanting to see what it's like. No, I'm not a weirdo. Really. Hello?... HELLO? Well, it's a bummer that true plebeians like me can't enter the portal of this monumentally ornate but relatively tasteful Victorian building. It was constructed with redwood in 1884 for a major lumber baron named William Carson. Presumably he got the wood for free... or at least wholesale. It's probably Eureka's defining landmark. OK, it's Eureka's only landmark. I think I only became aware of it when I saw a 1970's-era movie where Henry Winkler plays a Vietnam War veteran obsessed with coming here with Sally Field. This was the establishing shot to show they made it. I did, too, but they still won't let me in. RELATED - Taking an adventure in this part of Northern California? When your in Eureka,Ca you do want to stop by and see one of the most photographed Victorian houses in the Queen Anne style, it's a colorful, stunning mansion with plenty of parking outside the grounds for a multitude of camera angles. Construction started in 1884 and was completed in 1886 at a cost of $80,000. William Carson was for whom the mansion was built , he started out as a gold miner and the contracted to provide logs to the mills being built around Humboldt Bay. The mansion is a little over 16,000 square feet and my self and my wife have been lucky enough to be invited to a private event at the Mansion, it is as beautiful inside as it is outside. The mansion is now owned by the Ingomar Club which is a private club and they maintain the mansion and its grounds , its beautiful! A must see, highly recommended

A stunning masterpiece! This beautiful Victorian Mansion was once the original living quarters of Forty-niner William Carson. It was constructed back in 1884 by William and his wife Sarah and designed by the Newsom Brothers of San Francisco. It has since been renovated but continues to keep its' unique Queen Anne Victorian architecture. The Ingomar Club has owned the mansion since 1950 and it is closed to the general public. Only members of the Ingomar Club are allowed access inside. Although this is the case, the external view is absolutely breathtaking! It seriously looks like something out of a storybook. I would have loved to have gone on a tour of the inside, but the view of the exterior alone is worth the stop. There are also several other gorgeous Victorian houses that are walking distance from the mansion that mustn't be missed. There's not really a designated parking lot. Since you can only view the exterior, people don't stay here for very long. You can just simply park your car on the side of the road for a few minutes while you admire the mansion and take pictures. It's located in the Old Town District of Eureka. Worth a stop if your already in the area.

Beautiful building for sightseeing if you're in the area but not worth going out of your way to see if not, simply because you cannot get very close or go inside. It's a private club and you must be a member to enter the grounds or the building. Its their way of preserving the property. After poking around a bit on the internet it looks like you might be able to arrange a tour in advance, but you have to reach out to the club to do so. It's not something you can just pop in and do. If we were to return to Eureka I'd certainly try to do this because the building is stunning. But if you're in Old Eureka, give it a gander. The Carson Mansion and the Pink Lady across the street are architectural beauties worth preserving and viewing.

Carson Mansion - Quintessential Haunted House

Eureka, California

William Carson came to California in the 1849-50 Gold Rush, failed to hit the lode jackpot, and instead became a successful lumberman and businessman. He built Eureka's most ostentatious home, the Carson Mansion, in 1884-1885 near his lumber mill.

The adjacent Pink Lady house.

The 18-room, three-story mansion includes a tower with a commanding view of Arcata Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The second floor features rounded Moorish arches. Lavish redwood carvings and ornamentation line the hallways and balconies.

The ornate structure is a combination of many Victorian styles, and is said to be the inspiration for Disney's Haunted Mansion and countless gothic haunted house movies.

It's easy to find a few blocks off of US 101, but your appreciation is kept at arm's length. There are no regular tours, and it does not seasonally transform into a Halloween haunted house. The Carson Mansion is now the Ingomar Club ("Humboldt County's Premier Private Club"). Trespassers are understandably discouraged. The Club is pleased to share photos of the interior on its website.

However, you can stand on the sidewalk at any time, snap pics, and leave. Bonus: turn around, and gaze at The Pink Lady, an 1899 Queen Anne style house built as a big pink and white wedding present.

“one of America's most photographed houses”

One of the most written about, and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps in the United States, the William Carson Mansion epitomizes the range of possibilities for eclectic design expression that created a peculiarly American style of architecture.  Derived from many sources, but unique enough to represent none predominately, this much discussed and debated property stands today in virtually the same condition as when first constructed.   The designers, Samuel and Joseph Newsom, were well respected San Francisco architects who heartily embraced the concept of the "picturesque", a quality that continues to fascinate all who see the Carson Mansion's intricately composed interiors and exteriors.       Prominently sited [143 M Street], the extensive grounds provide a substantial pedestal for this sculptured edifice.  Eye-seeking and shadow-producing surfaces showcase the use of wood as a building material. This three-dimensional "pattern-book" took over one hundred men over two years to construct.

Fox News Star Sean Hannity Lists His $13.8M Waterfront Estate in Oyster Bay, NY

Fox News host Sean Hannity is ready to leave the Empire State. He’s selling his mansion on Centre Island in Oyster Bay, NY , for $13,750,000.

Per reports , Hannity prefers Florida for its political bent, and he bought a townhouse in Palm Beach in 2021 for $5.3 million.

But leaving behind his seven-bedroom, 7.5-bath mansion with over 10,600 square feet will certainly be bittersweet. With plenty of property to stroll, waterfront acreage, a dock, and an array of high-end amenities, Hannity’s estate is undeniably special.

And few places on the north shore of Long Island are as coveted and private as Centre Island . ( Billy Joel is a neighbor in the ultraexclusive enclave.)

Gated and set back from the road via a long driveway, Hannity’s luxurious residence abounds with Hamptons style, thanks to a quiet white palette, traditional decor, and the incredible isthmus locale. Bay breezes are plentiful, wafting over the manicured lawns and gorgeous gardens from the 500-foot waterfront and 81-foot dock.

The spacious main room can accommodate a baby grand piano and flows easily to a posh kitchen that’s outfitted with marble counters, a large island, a professional-grade gas range, and custom cabinets. Along with a breakfast nook, there’s also a formal dining room with lovely moldings.

Each en suite bedroom is its own serene sanctuary, but the primary suite is the ultimate. This sleep space offers a sitting area, two walk-in closets, and a gorgeous bathroom with a steam shower and soaking tub.

Boat lovers will leap at the chance to motor away from the private dock in the cool waters of Oyster Bay and into the bigger swells of Long Island Sound. Other leisure perks include a par-3 golf course, large swimming pool, and tennis court.

Hannity is a longtime employee of Fox, having joined the network in 1996. He’s currently the host of his eponymous Fox News Channel primetime show that airs weeknights.

Along with his TV chops, Hannity hosts a radio program called “The Sean Hannity Show” and is the author of four New York Times bestsellers.

Kentucky Derby Ticket Prices 2024: How Much Does It Cost to Get In?

How much does it cost to get in the door at Churchill Downs?

  • Author: Liam McKeone

The 2024 Kentucky Derby has finally arrived, and it is a big one. Saturday's race will mark the 150th to take place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. There will undoubtedly be some additional fanfare to celebrate the sesquicentennial race, but you can also expect the usual Derby fare — outrageous outfits, Mint Juleps, and an exciting race.

There will also be the usual assortment of famous and wealthy individuals in attendance. The Derby, among all its other qualities, is a gathering place for many highly successful individuals, from Tom Brady to Jack Harlow. Even the Queen of England attended back in 2007. Whenever the camera pans ove the crowd during the Derby the audience is almost assured to spot someone rich, famous, or both.

Those people don't have any trouble attending the Derby, what with their endless bank accounts and all. But what are ticket prices like for the general population?

Kentucky Derby Ticket Prices 2024

Tickets can be purchased directly from the Kentucky Derby official website .

An Infield General Admission ticket, which gets you in the door, costs $130. This is as basic as basic admission gets for the Derby. You get to go in through the gates to Churchill Downs, receive a program, enjoy what must be an overpriced specialty cocktail, and set up your own lawn chair to watch the Derby itself on the big board.

The next level of GA is listed as an Infield Final Turn General Admission ticket. The price point starts at $275, and it is as advertised. A standing room only ticket that lets you set up shop on the lawn right by the final turn. An exciting place to be, no matter how close the race is, and a fairly reasonable price upgrade compared to the Infield GA ticket.

A higher-level entry price comes in the form of a Frontside Plaza Walkaround ticket, which are already sold out. The starting price listed on the Derby website for such a ticket is $693. Sold as a two-day package for the Kentucky Oaks as well as the Derby, it's advertised as enjoying "a reimagined view of the Paddock with standing room access and frontside amenities." Regardless, that's a pretty penny, to be sure.

After that is when the real money starts rolling. The hospitality suites are all very expensive; the Silks Balcony & Loge, for example, charges $3,650 for entry. The Turf Club Balcony & Terrace costs $3,525 to get in. There are some more semi-reasonable options, such as the Champions Balcony & Loge ($1,775) or the Plaza Balcony & Loge ($1,775).

The nicest listed options appear to be the Woodford Reserve Paddock Club & Enclosure and the Spires Terrace & Suites. Neither has a price listed; interested parties must contact the Derby. As with many sporting events, the "cheap" options aren't very cheap and the nicest options can run up to thousands of dollars.

That's just about all you need to know about how much it costs to attend the Kentucky Derby in 2024. Enjoy!

Kamala Harris Leads Push to Shore Up Democratic Support From Black Voters

Speaking in Atlanta, the vice president began a national tour to highlight how the Biden administration is trying to help Black Americans economically.

Kamala Harris walks onto a stage while waving to the crowd. Some people up front are holding phones to capture the moment.

By Maya King

Reporting from Atlanta

  • April 29, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris made a new effort to energize Black voters in battleground states on Monday, visiting Atlanta for the kickoff of a national economic tour that will highlight how the Biden administration says its policies are helping a constituency that will be vital to Democrats’ success in November.

Speaking to a largely Black crowd of about 400 people, Ms. Harris laid out ways that she and President Biden have sought to improve Black Americans’ upward mobility and help them realize their business ambitions. A chief objective of the tour, she said, was to let Black business owners and entrepreneurs know about the resources available to them.

“I need the help of the leaders who are here to get the word out so people know what is available to them,” she said during a conversation at the Georgia International Convention Center with Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings of the financial literacy podcast “Earn Your Leisure,” which offers business advice to its more than two million listeners, a majority of whom are Black.

Explaining how government policies have widened the racial wealth gap over the years, Ms. Harris pointed to the Biden administration’s attempts to try to narrow it, including small-business grants and efforts to forgive student loans.

“We want to make sure people know about it — and then know where they can receive — the support to be ready to take on the work and then to grow their capacity,” she said.

Her remarks at the official White House-hosted event — drier and less political than her forceful campaign speeches on abortion recently — meandered at times.

“As much as anything, the spirit behind the push for access to capital, and in particular, on this tour, focusing on minority small businesses and Black-owned small businesses, and small businesses and entrepreneurs who are Black men, is to recognize the disparities that have existed around the access to the opportunity to achieve success,” she said at one point.

But at other moments Ms. Harris was more pointed, including when she defended diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that conservative lawmakers have pushed to dismantle in state governments and at colleges and universities .

“In spite of those who in certain parts of our country want to attack D.E.I., we understand that you can’t truly invest in the strength of our nation if you don’t pay attention to diversity, equity and inclusion,” she said.

The vice president’s Atlanta visit, her 12th trip to Georgia since taking office, was the first stop in a tour of several battleground states in the coming weeks. Much of the tour will focus on Black small businesses and economic issues that are especially pressing for Black communities. She will visit Detroit next week, aides said.

Ms. Harris’s tour will also seek to engage Black men, whom Democrats are urgently courting as polls show them softening in their support for Mr. Biden. Much of the crowd at the vice president’s event consisted of Black male political and business leaders, as well as a contingent of students from Morehouse College, a historically Black men’s college in Atlanta where President Biden will deliver the commencement address next month.

Before her speech, Ms. Harris visited an entrepreneurship hub near downtown Atlanta where she spoke with Black small-business owners.

Flanked by Georgia’s Democratic senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, as well as Representative Nikema Williams, the state Democratic Party chair, Ms. Harris highlighted the Biden administration’s marquee legislation, like the CHIPS and Science Act, which offers funding for small-business research projects.

She also underlined the roughly $7 billion that the administration has poured into historically Black colleges and universities, the largest investment of any White House administration.

Atlanta is set to receive more than $150 million for a project called The Stitch that is meant to revitalize the city’s downtown areas and connect them to its growing midtown neighborhoods. Georgia is one of 40 states that will receive money from a White House program that aims to repair the decades-old societal damage from federal transportation projects that disproportionately displaced Black communities.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Election

Presidential Race

Protests and arrests on college campuses exploded into the forefront of the presidential race recently, opening up a new line of attack for Republicans  and forcing President Biden to directly address an issue that has divided the liberal wing of his party.

In a stop in Wilmington, N.C., a possible swing state in the fall election, the president announced $3 billion  in new spending to upgrade water systems around the country.

Biden has been under pressure to prove he can be tough at the border. But at a campaign reception, he also tried to voice his commitment  to America’s long history of immigration, calling Japan and India “xenophobic” in the process.

A Key to 2024:  As Democrats confront a presidential race against a resurgent and resilient Trump as well as a brutally challenging Senate map, they believe they have an increasingly powerful political weapon: ballot measures to protect  abortion rights.

Presidential Medal of Freedom:  With the election looming, Biden assembled a list of 19 people to honor that was heavy with major Democratic Party figures and others he has worked with  over the years.

The Ultimate D.C. Veteran:  In 30 years of Senate bids, Joe Biden was such a formidable incumbent  that he did not face a serious threat to his return to office. But his last re-election is shaping up to be a fight.

Awash in Federal Money:  Across Milwaukee, there is evidence of federal money from laws passed under the Biden administration. The president hopes voters will notice .
