Ultimate vietnam and cambodia itinerary.

The Ultimate Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary

Despite Vietnam and Cambodia bordering each other, you may be surprised to know that these 2 countries feel entirely different and that, stepping across the border into one and out of  the other, will have you assuming you’ve been transported to another world.

Crazy, I know!

However, this does mean they make a great complimentary set of destinations and knowing that many travellers like to piece them together to create one fabulous trip, I’m combining these 2 great Southeast Asian countries here to bring you a top month long Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary.

Given that both these countries have a wealth of sights to visit, beaches to enjoy and adventures to experience, this will be a jampacked itinerary that aims to get you seeing as much of both countries as possible.

Honestly though, you could eke out this itinerary to fill 2 months’ worth of travels, especially if you check out my add-on section at the end of the article

Otherwise, if you only have a shorter timeframe, such as 2 or 3 weeks, either consider limiting yourself to just one country (by checking out my standalone Vietnam itinerary or Cambodia itinerary ) or pick and choose the destinations you want from the below list and create your own combination.

You see loads of options!

So let’s get started…

Arriving into Hanoi to Begin Your Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary

Vietnam, Hanoi, Street Sellers

For the purpose of this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, I suggest beginning your adventures in the north of Vietnam, and the capital of Hanoi, as this will help you carve out the smoothest and quickest itinerary route without having to double-back on yourself.

Hanoi is also a popular gateway to the region, with many well-priced flights arriving here from across the world.

As always, I use Skyscanner to find the best flight deals and Bookaway to find the best bus journeys.

Day 1 & 2: Hanoi, Vietnam

Stay: little charm hostel.

Vietnam, Hanoi, Egg Coffee

Welcome to Vietnam!

You’re straight into the Southeast Asian madness here in Hanoi – a bustling city, whose old quarter streets will quickly have you seeing, smelling and tasting many of the delights of this region.

Don’t miss the opportunity to sample the amazing Vietnamese coffees on offer here – especially the acquired taste of an egg coffee – and there’s loads of cafes where you can do just that.

My favourite has to be Hidden Gem , which is tucked down a back street, but well worth seeking out.

Other sights to see in this city include the Ho Hoan Kien Lake and Den Ngoc Son Temple, the nearby puppet theatre, St Joseph’s Cathedral and the famous Hanoi Street Train.

The Hanoi Social Club is a wonderful place to eat, drink and unwind.

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

Information will be sent to the email provided above

Day 3 & 4: Cat Ba Island, Vietnam

Stay: homestead hostel.

Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay, Scenery

From Hanoi make your way via bus and boat to Cat Ba Island care of the Cat Ba Express service. I paid $28 USD for this return service from the capital.

Cat Ba Island is a much better bet for those who want to see Hanoi Bay scenery on a budget – a crucial point to note if you’re a backpacker making this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary. Here’s a full blog post all about it .

Just south of this famous World Heritage Site, heading out on a cheap day cruise from Cat Ba Island to Lan Ha Bay to experience an identical landscape will cost you a fraction of the price that it will on a direct tour from Hanoi to Halong Bay.

For a day cruise that included kayaking through remote parts of the bay with no other tourists (which you won’t get in Halong Bay itself) I paid just $23 USD with Cat Ba Ventures.

If you have spare time on Cat Ba Island, then enjoying some hiking in the national park, that occupies a large swath of land in the centre of this island, also makes for a fab day trip.

Day 5: Bus to Phong Nha, Vietnam

Vietnam, Phong Nha, Town Views

Head back to Hanoi from Cat Ba Island on day 5 in time to catch a night bus from the capital to the town of Phong Nha.

I highly suggest booking your night bus in advance through a great website called 12Go .

This night bus trip cost me $9 USD.

Day 6 & 7: Phong Nha, Vietnam

Stay: central backpackers if you want to be social or amanda homestay if you want to chill.

Vietnam, Phong Nha Hang Tien

You’ll arrive into Phong Nha early in the morning if you take the night bus from Hanoi, which means you have the whole day to explore this tiny town as well as the lovely Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and caves that lie on its outskirts, including Dark Cave and Paradise Cave.

Phong Nha is all about the caves actually – they are incredible and huge, in fact they’re UNESCO listed – and booking on a trip to explore some that lie further out from the town is a must on your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary.

I ventured out on a one day tour with Oxalis to the Tu Lan Cave to do just this and found it was one of the best days of my whole time in Vietnam.

This makes it well worth the splurge, but do ensure you book in advance as places sell out quickly.

You can learn more in the ultimate travel guide to Phong Nha I wrote following my time there.

THE BEST TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR YOUR CAMBODIA AND VIETNAM ITINERARY

I’d never even consider travelling to Vietnam or Cambodia without proper coverage and always recommend travel insurance from World Nomads which I’ve used throughout my time in these 2 countries and beyond.

I love that World Nomads’ policies cover of a wide range of adventure activities – which is definitely needed for a country like Vietnam – as well as their great customer service and the fact that you can easily claim or extend your coverage while you’re still abroad, online.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for travel insurance with Covid-19 cover, then look no further than Safetywing’s great Nomad Insurance policies.

These guys will cover you at some seriously great prices, including if you have to quarantine!

Day 8: Hue, Vietnam

Stay: bon ami guesthouse.

Vietnam, Hue, Royal Palaces

After your amazing time caving in Phong Nha, it’s time to continue south to the city of Hue, which boasts another UNESCO-listed site, namely its old imperial city.

If you get to Hue by lunchtime, the afternoon should give you plenty of time to explore this fascinating site (which closes at 5pm) and impart a real sense of stepping back in time.

Entrance to the Royal Palaces cost me 150,000 Vietnamese Dong (₫) for a single entry ticket, or, if you have time, combine this with a trip to the tombs, which lie just outside the city of Hue.

A combination ticket for both attractions, which lasts for 1 day, costs 280,000₫.

Hue is a very chilled city, set along a river and boasts some nice parklands to stroll in and good cafes to drink in too.

Day 9, 10, 11 & 12: Hoi An, Vietnam

Stay: love.ly hostel.

Vietnam, MySon, Me at Ruins

And from Hue, it’s then a short journey to the fab city (also UNESCO-listed) of Hoi An.

This destination is a traveller favourite on any Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary and many people end up spending longer here than they planned, as they quickly fall in love with the quaint streets and charming atmosphere.

You can either travel by bus here direct from Hue , or you can enjoy an Easy Rider tour , which takes you on the back of a bike to sightsee some of the places in between these 2 cities including the famous Marble Mountains and Thanh Toan Bridge.

Once in Hoi An, spend at least a day exploring the gorgeous old town, which is particularly beautiful at night with all its glowing lanterns, and then consider some of the great day trips on offer here, including those to the UNESCO My Son ruins , the nearby beach at An Bang, a snorkelling trip to the Cham Islands or a fabulous Vietnamese cooking class.

Learn more about the top things to do in Hoi An in this post I wrote about visiting the city.

READ MORE: The 15 Best Things to Do in Vietnam

Day 13, 14 & 15: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Stay: da blend hostel.

Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, Pink Cathedral

And finally, it’s onto your last destination in Vietnam, namely the amazing city of Ho Chi Minh, which lies in the south of the country.

The main sights in the centre of the city can all be seen in an easy day, but it’s the atmosphere of this place that really captured me.

There’s also some great day trips to enjoy from Ho Chi Minh, including to the Chu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.

You can learn more in my post about the top 17 things to do in Ho Chi Minh .

GETTING FROM HO CHI MINH CITY TO CAMBODIA ON YOUR VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA ITINERARY

You can easily use the services of Champa Mekong to cross from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Kampot in Cambodia, tickets for which can be booked online via the secure website 12Go .

Learn more about how I crossed the border from Kampot in Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh here .

Otherwise, if you’re looking to take a slightly different route, I suggest using a bus company called Giant Ibis to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh. Again, you can book tickets online care of 12Go .

I’ve used this Giant Ibis many times in Southeast Asia, including when I crossed the border from Bangkok to Siem Reap , and can’t fault their service or how easy they make border journeys.

Day 16, 17 & 18: Kampot, Cambodia

Stay: ganesha eco lodge.

Cambodia, Kampot, Me In Front of Building

And now we’re into the final 2 weeks of this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary.

You’ll no doubt have had a crazy schedule if you followed my above 2 week schedule for Vietnam, so Kampot makes for the perfect place to chill out.

Here you can enjoy kayaking on the river or waterfall hikes, trips to pepper farms or some great massage and spa options.

There’s also day trips to Bokor Hill Station available, as well as sunset river cruises or even escapes to the seaside town of Kep, which is just a couple of hours away.

Or you can just wander the old town centre of Kampot and soak in its relaxed atmosphere.

A great place to do that from is a café called Simple Things, which has a delicious healthy menu and daily yoga classes.

Day 19, 20, 21, 22 & 23: Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia

Stay: hornbill guesthouse.

Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem, Boat on Beach

I won’t say too much about this paradise island, because I want you to discover the joys of it for yourself, but arriving here really is the perfect way to unwind and trust me, you’ll want to stay longer.

The smaller of the 2 islands in this part of Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem offers some wonderful beachside chill time on a jungle-clad island gently lapped by tropical blue waters.

Take a look at my ultimate guide to Koh Rong Sanloem , which contains tons more info if you decide to head here… which you definitely should!

5 PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR CAMBODIA & VIETNAM

#1 Lonely Planet Guidebook – The Southeast Asia Lonely Planet is excellent and very helpful for any trip to these countries with lots of top tips and recommended places to eat.

#2 Walking Shoes – There’s likely to be a lot of walking in Vietnam and Cambodia especially around those temples and cities! As such, I advise packing a pair of good runners, like these New Balance trainers , which were perfect for my time here.

#3 European & British Power Adapters – Vietnam and Cambodia have a mix of power outlets, but generally opt for a mix of the European and British ones, so make sure you come prepared with a Skross world adapter .

#4 Camera and Lens – I love my Sony A6000 mirrorless , which was ideal for capturing the colour, chaos and cuisine and charm of these countries.

#5 Travel Scarf – A great multi-purpose travel item that can be used to safely store valuables as well as cover your shoulders while you explore many of Vietnam and Cambodia’s top sights, a Sholdit travel scarf is a must for me!

Day 24 & 25: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Stay: feliz hostel.

Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Prison Window

If you can tear yourself away from the island bliss of Koh Rong Sanloem, then the next stop on your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary should be the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.

You can take a Giant Ibis bus to make the long journey from the mainland town of Sikhounville (which is where the boat from Koh Rong Sanloem docks).

The journey to Phnom Penh will then likely take all day and have you arriving into the capital in the early evening.

Wander along the lovely riverside promenade to get a feel for the city, before checking out its main attractions the following day.

These are namely the infamous Killing Fields and S-21 Prison.

Very harrowing sites that pay witness to the awful genocide that befell this country, they are highly informative and should not be missed if you really want to learn a bit more about Cambodia.

Onederz Hostel can arrange joint tuk-tuks that will pair you with other travellers so you can see both sites together, in a day, for just $7 USD.

Day 26: Battambang, Cambodia

Stay: pomme.

Cambodia, Battambang, Bats

After Phnom Penh, it’s then back on a bus to head for Battambang, a small city that boasts some beautiful colonial architecture, heritage walks and an old bamboo train you can still ride.

My favourite thing to do here however was visit the bat cave entrance which, at sunset, will allow you to see more bats than you can ever possibly imagine, exiting a huge cave mouth in one crazy spectacle.

I paid $10 USD for a return tuk-tuk (including waiting time) from Battambang to the cave in time for sunset.

BOOKING BUSES TO / AROUND VIETNAM AND CAMBODIA

You can book bus tickets both across borders, as well as within these 2 countries online via the secure website 12Go , who I used throughout my time here and highly recommend.

Day 27, 28, 29, 30: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Stay: onederz hostel.

Cambodia, Angkor, Temple Gates

And last but not least on this Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, it’s time to head to Siem Reap… home to the world famous and UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat complex.

Siem Reap the city has quite a lot going on in its own right and it’s well worth spending a day exploring here.

Top of the list are the night markets, river strolls and massages, but you can discover more in this list I wrote about the best things to do this city .

You can also use this day to plan your Angkor Wat experience and top of the list has to be seeing an Angkor Wat sunrise .

Tickets to this famous temple complex, which is HUGE FYI, can be bought at the entrance for varying amounts of time, but I highly suggest the 3 day ticket, which will allow you to return to the complex on a few occasions to see as much of it as possible.

As it gets incredibly hot and humid here, sightseeing this massive site in a day is exhausting, so why not take it at a more relaxed pace and spend a few days there so you can see the main temples, as well as some of the smaller ones, a sunrise as well as a sunset, and have the opportunity to cycle as well as walk amidst the jungle, ruins and villages here.

Again, Onederz Hostel boasts some great shared tuk-tuk tours, which are priced at $7 USD each and combine you with other tourists to help keep costs down.

This hostel also boasts 2 pools, which is ideal for the crazy heat you’ll experience here.

Then it’s time to head home… onwards!

Grab a domestic flight from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and here connect with your international flight. Again, I’d use Skyscanner to find the cheapest tickets available.

Alternatively, hop on a bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok to explore your next Southeast Asian country, Thailand !

Got More Time for Your Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary?

Vietnam, DaNang, Beach

If you have more time for your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary, then I’d highly recommend the following places, which are also great destinations I simply didn’t have the opportunity to fit into my month long plan…

  • Da’Nang – Beachside city near Hoi An in Vietnam. Great for a few days chilling.
  • Sapa – Amazing place for trekking and homestays in the north of Vietnam. Travel here from Hanoi. Check out this excellent multi-day trip if you want to book ahead of time.
  • Ninh Binh – Described as Halong Bay onland, this remarkable landscape can be fitted into your Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary between Cat Ba Island and Phong Nha.
  • Dalat – Hilltop town famed for its adventure activities in the south of Vietnam.
  • Mekong Delta – You can take a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta, but if you really want to get into the culture of this unique area in south Vietnam why not consider a 2 day excursion?
  • Pho Quoc – Arguably Vietnam’s best beachside spot, fit a few days relaxing on this island into your itinerary between heading from Ho Chi Minh City towards Kampot in Cambodia.

Your 2-week Southeast Asian adventure concludes in Siem Reap. Spend your final moments in this vibrant city with optional last-minute explorations or shopping.

How Much Does a 2-Week Vietnam and Cambodia Tour Cost?

A private tour in Vietnam and Cambodia can be an exclusive, stress-free, and affordable experience for both families and couples.

Generally, you would usually need to pay around US$200–250 per day per person (including airfares within Vietnam and Cambodia, 4/5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, private guides, and private transfers). Kids below 10 would get around 30% to 50% discounts.

Thus, a typical private tour to Vietnam and Cambodia usually costs US$9,500–12,000 for a family trip with 2 adults and 2 kids, while a couple can expect to spend around US$5,600–7,000, excluding the cost of international flights to and from their home country.

Insider's Tips on Cost

The price usually fluctuates as the weather changes in SE Asia. Owing to the drier weather, you can expect the peak prices between November and April, especially around the Christmas and New Year holiday periods. Early bookings 3-6 months beforehand would be ideal to secure the best deals.

The lowest costs usually come from May to October , in the rainy season. Rarely with constant rainfall for even a whole day, traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia can still be fun-filled and mostly dry with a well-organized and flexible private rainy-season tour.

To balance the price and weather prospects, traveling just before or after the high season (late October and early May) is a wise choice for a compromise.

Ultimate Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary for 2 Weeks

Vietnam and Cambodia are two countries that have so much in common yet at the same time shine with their own different charms. A Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary in 2 weeks takes you to see unforgettable history, indigenous culture, compelling cities and divine natural beauties.

Even though, a 14-day itinerary is suitable for those who don’t have the luxury of 1 month long, it’s certainly not quite enough to discover the two countries in-depth. However, two weeks just fit perfectly for travelers who are looking to see the very best of what Vietnam and Cambodia have to offer in terms of nature and especially native culture.

We’ve put together a comprehensive Vietnam Cambodia Itinerary for Two Weeks that can take you to see all the best bits of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Best time to take a 14-day Vietnam and Cambodia Trip

Vietnam Cambodia itinerary tour reviews

January to March is the time that the whole country shares the most favorable weather with less-rain (in South) and dry in North and Central areas. During this time, you can see most of Vietnam.

Cambodia has two distinctive seasons: dry season from October to late April and wet season from May to September. So January to March is also the best time to visit Cambodia.

Vietnam & Cambodia 14 Days Tour Reviews: It’s Not A Tour, It’s “The Tour”

We received such a heartfelt and inspiring letter after the  Vietnam & Cambodia 14 Days Tour from our lovely guest, Mr. Robert Wyatt. We’re more than proud to share his words.

Having served two tours in Vietnam during the war, I had always liked the country and people, and this was my first opportunity to visit a country I had last seen almost 50 years ago. I combined it with a short stay in  Cambodia . While my comments are primarily about the Vietnam portion of the tour, everything I say pertains to the 4 days I spent in Cambodia as well. I loved the friendly people and was highly impressed with their English language skills. They are highly impressive countries that deserve more time that I was able to devote this visit. I plan to return. I have been on many tours in my life, and this trip was exceptional in every way.  I have told friends and family that it was the tour of Vietnam, not a tour, the tour. Anyone deciding to travel to Vietnam, with a short diversion to Cambodia, would do be well advised to do the exact same trip I just completed. I credit Ms. Phi Mai of  Asianwaytravel for considering my wishes and planning the perfect trip for me. Her attention to detail from our first contact through the end of the trip insured a memory of a lifetime. Everything happened exactly as planned, on time. (The only exception was a cancelled flight in Cambodia which is impossible to control, unless you own the airline.)told Ms. Mai that I wanted to learn the culture, history and lifestyle of the  Vietnamese people as thoroughly as can be expected in a couple of weeks. I believe that even in that short period, this trip did just that. I learned history of the beginning of the nation to its current state – again, considering the short period I had available. Experiences included taking part in becoming a rice farmer for a day – from plowing through the harvesting. The tour was entertaining, educational and just plain fun. In short, the variety and extent of experience was incredible. Mr.Bob – ‘Be a rice farmer for a day’ experience in Hoi An
I did have one glitch during the trip. As mentioned, one of my flights was cancelled and delayed my arrival at my destination by four hours. I, frankly, thought the planned experiences during that time were lost and considered how to compensate for the lost time. Unnecessary since my guide met me at the airport with a revised plan. He rearranged the tour to ensure I missed nothing. Who could ask for anything more? It was as great a trip as it sounds. Hard to believe? Believe it. Why you should book with Asianwaytravel? Asianway Travel , based in Hanoi, Vietnam, has been in the industry for nearly 20 years, bringing thousands of guests from all over the world to the beautiful countries in Indochina. Three Week Traveller

3 Weeks In Cambodia and Vietnam Itinerary

DISCLAIMER: This post might have links to travel services and products that we enjoy. We might make a commission from it at no extra cost to you.

Cambodia is easily one of the most popular travel destinations in Southeast Asia. It is most famous for its ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. While that is definitely a must-see in Cambodia, many people don’t know that Cambodia is also home to beautiful beaches and also holds a very dark history.

Vietnam is probably known today for its war in 1970, but apart from that, it is also home to world-class coffee farms, motorbike destinations, and of course, tasty local dishes. It is a famous destination for young backpackers for its affordability and ease of travel.

In this article, I will show you a sample of 3 weeks in Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary. I will give you an idea of how many days to spend in each top destination in both countries, how to get to each place and other travel tips for your holiday here.

Of course, you don’t need to follow my itinerary religiously, just want to give you a visual idea to help you write and plan your own .

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO CAMBODIA AND VIETNAM

angkor wat, face statues, tower, halong beach boats and pillar stones, train tracks - 3 WEEKS IN CAMBODIA AND VIETNAM ITINERARY

Before we get to the juicy part, let’s first talk logistics and basic planning. I know many of you are like me and have limited annual holidays, so I want to make sure this destination is suitable for the type of vacation you need. I will also explain why combining Cambodia and Vietnam on this trip is a good idea.

Why Cambodia and Vietnam

While it’s pretty easy to spend 3 weeks in Vietnam, Cambodia is a bit smaller and 21 days can be too much. I personally believe that combining two places will maximise your use of your holiday, which is our main goal on this site.

Vietnam and Cambodia share a land border, making it easy to hop between the two countries. In this itinerary, though, I recommend you fly as it will save you time and is very affordable.

Cambodia and Vietnam also experienced a tragic war during the 70s, the war in both countries are also somehow related. If you want, you can also plan for 3 weeks in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam .

If you travelling all the way from North and Latin America, that will be a significantly long journey, I want to make sure that you are making the long-haul flight worth the trip.

In Cambodia, you will get to explore the world-famous Angkor Wat, see the luminous plankton, and ride Battambang’s popular bamboo train. At the same time, Vietnam will showcase the beauty of Halong Bay, Sa Pa, and the historic city of Hanoi. Angkor Wat and Halong Bay are on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre list.

When is the best time to go to Cambodia

November to February is a good time to go to Cambodia. During this time, the temperature is much cooler and less rain. However, it is also the time when most tourists come. This means the crowd can be bigger, lines longer, and booking tour tickets (especially for Ankot Wat) must be done in advance. Some services like accommodations and flights may also be more expensive during this time.

If you don’t mind the rain, May to October is the rainy season. While not until September that the rain pours non-stop. Between March to May, it can be very hot and going outside or doing anything during the day can really be uncomfortable.

When is the best time to go to Vietnam

For this 3-week holiday, I will be focusing on the Northern part. Vietnam, even though in Southeast Asia, experienced four seasons, especially in the north. Hence, it’s important for you to know when to visit Vietnam to make sure you get to enjoy your holiday without weather conflict.

October to November or February to March is the best time to visit Vietnam. There’s very little chance of rain, and the temperature is bearable. You should also look up “Tet holiday”. And avoid coming to Vietnam during this time.

It is the Lunar New Year (the dates change every year, but happens between the end of January to the end of February), and it lasts for nearly 2 weeks. Every airport, bus station, and hotel will be booked and busy. Many restaurants and tourist sites will be closed as well.

However, if you come from December to January, it can be very cold in this area, requiring you a decent winter jacket. You should avoid coming between April to May, it is the hottest time of the year. In contrast, June until September is the rainy season.

Visa in Cambodia and Vietnam

Cambodia is one of the few countries that have straightforward visa rules (which I really love). Unless your passport is from Southeast Asia (which gets a free visa), you only need to apply for an evisa online or get a visa upon arrival.

Foreign visitors of Vietnam can also apply for an evisa online . It’s valid for 30 days to 90 days. A 30-day evisa cannot be renewed, but a 30-day to 90-day visa on arrival can be renewed.

The fee is about $25-$35 , depending on which port you are entering from, and the visa is valid for 30 days. When sending the application online, make sure that you have the dates right, your flight number, port of entry, a digital passport photo, bank card for payment, address of your first hotel, and personal information.

The processing time can take between 3-7 business days (excluding weekends). So, if you submit at Friday afternoon, you might have to wait until the next Friday. But if you submit it on Monday, you should get your evisa before the end of the week.

The rest of the world, except Africa, the Middle East, and some South Asian countries, need to apply for a visa in advance. While most of Latin, North America, Europe, Central Asia, and Oceania can apply for an evisa valid of 30 days.

Currency in Cambodia and Vietnam

While Cambodia has their own currency called Cambodian Riel, US Dollar is more common here and cash is still the king. Whether you are paying for a hotel room, taxi, restaurant, or street vendor – you can pay with USD. While that sounds pretty good, Cambodia doesn’t use pennies or coins. This means, that almost everything that is sold on the street cost $1 and if your total bill in a restaurant is $2.50, you will be paying $3.

You can still use Riel, but ATM spits out USD, which would mean converting your USD into Riel.

Vietnam uses Vietnamese Dong, which is about $1=22,000 VND. Vietnam doesn’t use coins and the biggest current is 500,000 VND which is about $25. When booking tours and paying for hotels, you should be able to use USD, GBP, and Euro – but in shops and on the streets, you have to use VND. There are many currency exchange shops all over the country, however, many ATMs will only spit out $150-$200 at a time.

Plan in advance

If you are coming during peak season, it’s vital that you plan in advance. For example, tickets to Angkor Wat are limited per day to keep the area monitored and preserved. Hotels will also be booked up early and only the bad and expensive ones are left available.

During typhoon season, flights get delayed or cancelled. Not to mention the traffic, if you plan on taking land transportation, you should put allowance in case you get stuck in traffic or your transportation get cancelled or delayed. 3 weeks in Cambodia fly quickly for people on limited holiday, you don’t want to waste any of it due to misplanning.

Getting around Cambodia and Vietnam

hoi an river, star fishes, hanoi train, sapa rice field in vietnam

The most common way to get around Cambodia is to take a domestic flight or bus. Within the city, tuk-tuks are the most common mode of transportation. But before you hop in, let the driver know where you are going and agree on the price to avoid hassle or overcharge.

On the other hand, getting around Vietnam is much easier. There is plenty of app for ride-hailing to use, Grab is the most popular, followed by GoViet, GoJek, and Be. When you use these apps, you can either pay by cash or set up your car. You can also choose between booking a car or a motorbike.

COVID in Cambodia

Cambodia has an over 80% vaccination rate among its population as of the first quarter of 2022 and gets an average of 20 cases a day. While booster shot campaigns are also ongoing. Cambodia opened their borders to vaccinated tourists. While the government thought this bordering opening will rush tourists back in, that didn’t happen. But this is mostly due to a lack of flights and the Omicron wave.

Personally, if you have the means, are vaccinated, follow entry requirements , and will take precautions to avoid spreading the virus, I recommend you visit Cambodia. With fewer tourists, this time will be the best time to visit Angkor Wat with no big crowd.

COVID in Vietnam

Vietnam shut its border in March 2020 and is yet to open to tourists. The government announced in November 2021 that they are targeting Mary or June 2022 as the main opening of the international border. The policies change quite often and it will depend on the COVID situation.

The country itself is about 80% vaccinated and booster shots are also on the way. However, it is currently suffering from an omicron variant.

3 WEEKS IN CAMBODIA AND VIETNAM ITINERARY

Now, to the fun part! In this itinerary for Cambodia, I will be covering Siem Reap, Battambang, and Sihanoukville. Then, we will take a flight to Hanoi, Vietnam to explore Halong Bay, Sa Pa, and the other popular destinations in the north.

We also have an itinerary for 3 weeks in Cambodia and 3 weeks in Vietnam itinerary .

Siem Reap and Krong Battambang for 6 days

tall, old tree, temples - 3 weeks in cambodia and Vietnam

Siem Reap has a popular international airport, so flying in here shouldn’t be a problem. The first thing I recommend you do is to plan your visit to Angkor Wat. Because it is being preserved, tickets are sold in limited for daily visits to keep the area in order. Spend your first-day buying a ticket or booking a tour if you haven’t done so. Once that’s on the books, it’s easier to relax knowing you won’t miss visiting this major attraction.

It is common to book a tour of Angkor Wat for 2 days. It’s a massive place and if you want to cover the entire area, spending 2 days is a good plan to not rush yourself.

Must-see places in Siem Reap

  • Angkor Wat – book a full-day sunrise tour or 2-day tour sunrise or 2-day sunrise and sunset tour
  • Angkor Thum/Thom
  •  Bayon Temple
  • Ta Prohm Temple
  • Tonle Sap Lake Floating Village or Kompong Phluk Floating Village
  • Angkor National Museum
  • Join a food tour or cooking class
  • Phnom Kulen Waterfall

Must-see places in Battambang

Battambang is only a 3-hour drive from Siem Reap. Most people don’t plan on staying in Battambang and simply book a day trip from Siem Reap.

  • Ride the Bamboo Train – you can book a tour that leaves from Siem Reap
  • Well of Shadows
  • Wat Samrong Knong
  • The Killing Cave
  • Phnom Banan Temple
  • Killing Field at Wat Samrong Knong

Accommodations in Siem Reap

  • Affordable: The Twitz Hostel or Lub d Hostel or Siem Reap Chilled Backpacker or Mad Monkey Hostel
  • Mid-range: Central Corner Suite or The Urban or Home Indochine D’angkor Hotel
  • Luxury: Two Seasons Hotel or Angkor Village Hotel or Memoire d’Angkor Boutique Hotel or Bayon Modern Residences

Phnom Penh for 2 days

To get from Phnom Penh from Siem Reap, you can either take a 5.5-hour bus ride or a 30-minute flight (but the bus is much cheaper). Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia and sits right next to the famous Mekong River.

While there are many places to see here, most tourists come to the capital to learn more about the war and genocide that lasted from 1975 to 1979 with estimated death of 1.5-2 million. There are plenty of guided tours and places to visit to better understand what happened during the war.

Must-see places in Phnom Penh

  • Royal Palace
  • Killling Fields/Choeung Ek Genocide Centre
  • S-21 Prison/Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum – you can book a combined tour for S-21 and Killing Fields
  • Join a city tour or city tour and Mekong River boat trip

Accommodations in Phnom Penh

  • Affordable: Villa Papillon or Mad Monkey Hostel or The Big Easy Hostel
  • Mid-range: Ohana Palace Hotel or Aquarius Hotels & Urban Resort or Vacation Boutique Hotel
  • Luxury: Sun & Moon Riverside Hotel or Citadines Flatiron or Glow Park Hotel or Plantation Urban Resort & Spa

Sihanoukville and Koh Rong for 3 days

Sihanoukville and Koh Rong is Cambodia’s pride when it comes to stunning beaches. It is located about 5 hours from Phnom Penh by bus. Sihanoukville is filled with resorts casinos. While I believe Sihanoukville is a charming beach town, I recommend you spend more time in Koh Rong especially if you want to do some boat trips.

Must-see places in Sihanoukville and Koh Rong

  • Queenco Hotel and Casino – if you want to play some games
  • Independence Beach
  • Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem – they are 2 different islands but right next to each other
  • Bioluminescent Plankton snorkel tour (Koh Rong Samloem)

Accommodations in Sihanoukville

  • Affordable to Mid-range: Manoha Villa or Om Home or Villa Blue Lagoon or Onederz Hostel
  • Luxury: Queenco Hotel & Casino or Independence Hotel Resort & Spa or Star Bay Residences

Hanoi for 2 days

cable car, green rice fields, temple, trees, flowers - 3 weeks in cambodia and vietnam

Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, you can directly fly here from either Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The airport is about an hour away, it’s easier to book an airport transfer in advance than discuss the meter with a taxi or book through a ride-hailing app.

Not only it’s filled with history, and a great location if you want to explore the northern part of the country. Many people who have travelled here would say that Hanoi is more traditional than Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), it may be true since there’s a light curfew or life and businesses kind of dies at midnight.

In just 2 days, you can easily explore the city itself and have extra time in planning your trips around the area. You can get a hop-on hop-off bus ticket for an easy way to get around the city.

Must-see places in Hanoi

  • Ho Chi Minh’s body at the Mausoleum
  • Traditional Puppet Show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre
  • Ngoc Son Temple/Turtle Tower
  • Hoa Lo Prison
  • Hanoi Opera House
  • Enjoy a morning bike tour
  • Temple Of Literature
  • Hanoi Old Quarter – especially at night
  • Learn how to do pottery at the ancient village
  • Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square – right by the Old Quarter
  • Join a street food tour on a cycle or street food by foot

Accommodations in Hanoi

  • Affordable: Hanoi City Backpackers Hostel or Classic Street Hotel or Golden Sun Hotel
  • Mid-range: Oriana Boutique Hotels & Restaurant or La Passion Hotel and Spa or San Palace Hotel
  • Luxury: Babylon Premium Hotel & Spa or Acoustic Hotel & Spa or Peridot Grand Luxury

Halong Bay for 2 days

Halong Bay sits a 2-hour drive from Hanoi to the east. Normally, you will be picked up from your hotel in Hanoi as early as 6 in the morning, it is usually reached by bus or van. Once in the town, tourists get on a boat (either to head to another island or boat where they will sleep or spend the entire day).

3 weeks in Cambodia and Vietnam should definitely include Halong Bay in your travel plan. Here’s a list of different options for a boat trip to Halong Bay, visitors often book a day trip or spend a night or two:

  • Day tour of Halong Bay from Hanoi – visiting caves, and islands, and enjoying kayak
  • Spend 2 days in Halong Bay
  • Book 3 days in Halong Bay

Sa Pa for 2 days

Sa Pa is a small town up in the north near the Chinese border. It’s about a 6-7-hour drive by bus, minivan, or train. It is the location of the famous rice fields of Vietnam is home to Hmong Tribe. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can book a tour that leaves at midnight from Hanoi, get to Sa Pa and spend the entire day, then head back to Hanoi at night.

Some travellers would plan to stay a night or two in Sa Pa to enjoy hiking, learning about the Hmong Tribe, and the history of these beautiful rice fields. I recommend you not to plan a trip here for December to January as it can be very cold, the fields are muddy, and the visibility is quite poor.

  • Book a 2-day trip to Sapa with trekking and bus ride
  • Spend 3 nights in Sapa with trek and overnight train ride
  • Fansipan – the highest point in Indochina, you can reach it by multiple-day hiking or cable car

Accommodations in Sapa

  • Affordable: Flaco Hostel or Mega View Homestay or Surelee Homestay
  • Mid-range: SaPa Retreat Condotel or SaPa Pinehill Lodge or Sapa Relax Hotel & Spa
  • Luxury: Pao’s Leisure Hotel or Laxsik Ecolodge

Day trips from Hanoi

If you have some time to kill before you leave Vietnam, you can book these popular day trips from Hanoi. Day trips mean you will be picked up early in the morning and spend the entire day exploring then will be back in Hanoi sometime in the evening.

  • Tam Coc, Hoa Lu, and Mua Caves
  • Trang An, Hoa Lu, and Mua Caves

Vietnam and Cambodia are such a great combination to spend your holiday. Both places offer an insight into the 70s war, both places have stunning UNESCO Heritage Sites that are must-see, and both places are so near each other. Hopping between these two countries will save you time.

I hope that you found this itinerary of 3 weeks in Cambodia and Vietnam helpful. If you prefer to start in Vietnam and end in Cambodia, that shouldn’t be a problem, you can also skip Sihanoukville and Koh Rong to free up 3 days in your itinerary.

Cambodia and vietnam itinerary

10 days: A brief insight to Cambodia and South Vietnam

Looking for a quick getaway but can’t decide between Cambodia and Vietnam? Look no further, this itinerary will help you out. You go through four main destinations, two in each country. Though you won’t be able to experience everything, you will leave enriched, wanting more.

Suggested Route : Siem Reap – Phnom Penh- Mekong Delta- Ho Chi Minh City

Highlights:

Start your trip in Siem Reap, one of Cambodia’s most prominent cities, equipped with an international airport. Visit the world-famous UNESCO site of the Angkor complex- a collection of 400 temples , of which the Angkor Wat is the most prominent. You can procure a one-day pass to the complex for around $37 dollars.

Return to Siem Reap in the evening and spend the next day sightseeing. There’s plenty to do in Siem Reap, so take your pick from bicycle tours to the countryside, a visit to the National Museum, or simply roaming among the Chinese-inspired shophouses and French architectural buildings. Next, you head to capital city Phnom Penh on the morning of the day after.

You reach Phnom Penh by afternoon, so you can spend some time recovering from the 5.5-hour drive and take in the sights on the following day. Once known as the Pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh is vibrant and buzzing, known for its impressive culture and architecture, religious significance, pre and post colonial history , royal heritage and its major infrastructure. Make sure you check out the Museums, and the nightlife.

With this, your stay in Cambodia comes to a close and you head to the Mekong Delta for the Vietnamese leg of your trip . Take the 5.5-hour journey by road and arrive at the rice bowl of Vietnam. You will stay in Can Tho, from where you can observe the floating markets in the early hours of the morning. Immerse yourself in the spectacular network of waterways with a boat ride, or visit fruit plantations and coconut candy manufacturers.

Head to Ho Chi Minh City for the last two days of your stay, and indulge in the street food . Ho Chi Minh City is the culinary capital of Vietnam, and the best way to experience this is with a food tour. Also check out the War Remnants museum and the Reunification Palace. You also have the option to take a one-day trip to see the Cu Chi tunnels, an impressive man-made network of tunnels used by the Vietnamese in the Vietnam War.

Budget:

This Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary is possible with any kind of budget . Public transportation is available between most stops, except between Phnom Penh and the Mekong Delta. A backpacker may have to skip out on the Mekong Delta, and instead opt for either a day trip or a two day-one night trip to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City. A comfort or a luxury traveller can easily choose a cruise in Mekong Delta alongside an overnight stay.

cambodia and vietnam itinerary

What you miss:

We could point out that all you get is a brief introduction to both countries that doesn’t do much justice to them, but it still gives you a nice experience for ten days’ worth. Mostly you’ll be in cities, but the Mekong Delta will allow for some relaxation amidst its natural beauty.

However, there are no beaches that you can stop by at all. Additionally, the weather in Vietnam in the South can get very hot and humid between April and November, and rainy from the end of May until October. In case you happen to be making this trip around then, we recommend heading to Central Vietnam instead. We can help with an itinerary for that as well, click on ‘Plan Your Trip’ to know more.

Alternative:

You can substitute your stay in Phnom Penh and fly directly from Siem Reap to Da Nang (in Central Vietnam) to head to Hoi An. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its Ancient Town, cut through with canals is a gorgeous sight to behold. In addition, it is known for a range of delicious cuisine. It is spared from the noise and chaos of traffic due to a vehicle ban in the centre of the city, making it that much more fun to take a cycling tour. You can then choose to travel either to North or South Vietnam, depending on what the weather allows.

If you are too adventurous to stick to either Cambodia or Vietnam, two weeks across both destinations are a nice way to explore both places and yet have enough time at your destinations. Read through this 2 week Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary for some ideas.

Suggested Route: Hanoi- Halong Bay- Hoi An- Ho Chi Minh City- Phnom Penh- Siem Reap

Highlights:

This route starts off in Vietnam, in Hanoi. A beautiful city filled with culture and heritage, it makes for a great start to your journey. Spend two days here exploring the many museums, the Old Quarter, and tasting bia hoi, the local brew. Day three has you taking a trip to Halong Bay, world-renowned UNESCO heritage site and home to limestone karst formations.

Spend the night at Halong Bay aboard a junk, and catch your flight to Da Nang the next day. From Da Nang airport, Hoi An is a 45-minute drive away. An international trading port centuries ago, Hoi An today is a relaxing destination fringed by quaint countryside . Spend three nights here, taking in the sights, and perhaps opting for a bicycle tour through the city and the countryside. After Hoi An, it’s back to Da Nang’s airport to catch a flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City is the Vietnamese culinary capital, where heritage structures stand alongside skyscrapers and shopping centres. Two days are enough to visit Dong Khoi for some shopping, the War Remnants museum and the Reunification Palace, and maybe even a food tour.

Bid goodbye to Vietnam, and hello to Cambodia, as you embark by either plane or road to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Two nights in the capital city will suffice to get your fill of their museums, French architecture and nightlife. The last four days of your holiday will be spent in Siem Reap, that you can either fly to (40 minutes), or drive to (5.5 hours). End the holiday here, discovering the city and visiting its charming markets. You can also take day trips to the Tonle Sap lake and the Phnom Kulen National Park.

Budget:

This Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary has at least two flights, a Halong Bay cruise and some long distance travel. Bound to be weighing on the wallet, this route is certainly not meant for someone with a light budget.

Additionally, with the time constraints, it is difficult to switch to overnight buses and trains . However, with hostels and budget accommodation in all destinations on the route, the trip shouldn’t get too cost intense. Comfort and luxury travellers will get to enjoy the boutique hotels, convenient transport options and high-quality activities on offer.

hanoi vietnam - vietnam itinerary

Adventure! These are very classic destinations in Indochina, and aren’t considered to be off the beaten path or appealing to adventure travellers. But don’t worry, every destination has something offbeat you can indulge in, be it bicycle or vespa tours that take you into the quaint countryside or a city’s night and street food scene. On this route, it’s all about your approach to your holiday!

Alternative route:

Vietnam’s weather can be a little finicky, so we recommend sticking to one or two regions within Vietnam according to the season and travel slower. Or, move your destinations around and finish off with some beach time in Phu Quoc or Hoi An. Confused? We’ve got you covered.

beach in vietnam

3 weeks – Cultural Sightseeing, scenic adventures and relaxing beach time combined

This Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary covers a little bit of everything- historic sites, ancient cities, mountains and beaches. It is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. You’ll get to adequately experience a little bit of both countries. In addition, you also breeze past Bangkok: we start this route off with flying into Bangkok, as flight availability is cheap and convenient. However, flying directly into Cambodia is definitely an open option in the event that you find a feasible flight into Siem Reap.

Suggested Route: Bangkok – Siem Reap- Phnom Penh- Hanoi- Sapa- Hoi An- Phu Quoc- Ho Chi Minh City

Fly into Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, and spend a night here. Getting from Bangkok to Siem Reap is easy and convenient, and can also be cheap depending on your choice of transportation. You can travel by bus or hire private transport. The overland road journey takes approximately 7-9 hours, depending on the border crossing. Some days the lines can be long, especially in the peak season.

Or, take the 1hr flight to save time and travel with relative ease. While in Siem Reap, make sure you acquire a one-day pass to the Angkor Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a stunning collection of temples and is a must-see, so keep your second day in Siem Reap free. The rest of your time can be spent indulging in some bicycle tours, shopping for locally manufactured textiles, visiting charming markets or dropping into the National Museum.

Head to Phnom Penh on day six of your stay- a flight is a mere 40 minutes, while travelling by road will take you 5.5 hours. Spend two days in the capital city of Cambodia, where you can learn about the Khmer Rouge era at the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum and the Killing Fields. You can also visit the Royal Palace, the Russian market and Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple on the only hill in the region.

Then, fly north into Vietnam, where your first stop is Hanoi, 3.5 hours of flying away. Do some light sightseeing in the capital, and spend your night aboard a train to the beautiful hill station of Sapa. Two days in Sapa are adequate; you can trek, take in the sights, interact with tribes and depending on the time of year, witness the transformation of the rice terraces.

Head back to Hanoi, and then leave for Hoi An. It is a pleasant city boasting its Old Town that has more than 800 preserved buildings. You spend three relaxing days here, after which you fly directly into Phu Quoc island for some beach time. Bask in the sun, sea and sand for a grand three days, then go to Ho Chi Minh City back on the mainland of Vietnam. In the three days before you depart, you can visit the War Remnants museum and the Reunification Palace, or even take a one-day day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels. End with a street food tour in the culinary capital of Vietnam.

There’s no escaping the minimum of 4 flights that are required in order to travel faster and see more sights.  So unfortunately, this route is not very feasible for backpackers.

cambodia and vietnam itinerary

With only 5 days in Cambodia, you will certainly miss out on a fair bit. You also have to skip out on a few characteristically ‘Vietnam’ destinations, like Halong Bay, the Mekong Delta and Hue. But, the experiences you do get are wide-ranged so you won’t feel like you are missing out. There’s a good chance you may feel an inclination towards either one of these countries. In that case, our three week itineraries on Vietnam and Cambodia will definitely help you out.

Alternative routes:

This Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary can be reversed with ease. Instead of starting off in Cambodia, start with Vietnam instead, and fly to Siem Reap after 12 days. Spend the rest of the trip in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Koh Rong. Koh Rong, a beach island, is a lot less touristy than Phu Quoc in Vietnam. You can then fly back from Phnom Penh or take a flight from the airport of Sihanoukville to Bangkok.

2 Week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary: Cultural highlights for first-time visitors

vietnam and cambodia travel itinerary

A 2 week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary is enough time to see and explore the most memorable highlights. The best time to visit Vietnam, as Absolute Travel Asia would recommend to you, is spring and autumn, when the weather is pleasant, especially, there is less chance of heavy rain. Meanwhile, Cambodia has a climate that is typically warm and pleasant year-round. See below the schedule of the best Vietnam Cambodia itinerary in two weeks.

2-week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary for first-time travellers

Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam, would definitely be in your must-not-miss places to visit during your 2 week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary . It is a modern city but still retains a unique old charm and striking colonial architecture. You can commence your tour of Hanoi with well-known tourist attractions such as the Ho Chi Minh Complex; The Temple of Literature (Vietnam’s first university); Ngoc Son Temple & Hoan Kiem Lake; and Dong Xuan market. Then enjoy one-hour cyclo ride through the narrow chaotic streets of the Old Quarter. This is where you can see the local life of Hanoians; or buy local souvenirs and specialities. You can also get exposed to the local old culture by getting a ticket to watch a traditional performance of the famous Vietnamese water puppets.

As described by a lot of our customers, Hanoi cuisine is among the most tasty in the world, while incredibly reasonable priced. Hanoi food utilizes freshwater ingredients such as prawns, squids, shrimps
,served with platters of fresh greens and herbs as well as the quintessential dipping sauce. Here are some of the best traditional delicacies you should try:

  • Bun thang (Rice vermicelli with chicken, egg, pork)
  • Banh cuon (Rolled cake)
  • Banh goi (Fried dumplings)
  • Bun cha (Vietnamese dish of grilled pork and noodle)
  • Xoi xeo (Vietnamese sticky rice with Mung bean)
  • Bun rieu (Rice noodles in tomato broth).

2. Halong Bay

As part of your 2-week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary, your trip in the North would not be complete without Halong Bay. It is a beautiful natural wonder in Northern Vietnam, declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The Bay is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests. The best way to get to Halong City is by car, minibus or bus from Hanoi.

When in Halong Bay, do not miss a chance to board a traditional wooden junk, which will take you past islands named for their shapes. And do not forget to visit ancient limestone caves and go sea kayaking and swimming if the weather permits. In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared seafood dinner under the stars.

Halong is famous for its variety of fresh and delicious seafood (crab, prawns, squid and snail). The catch served in most restaurants usually comes right out of fishing boats in the early hours of the morning. When in Halong Bay, don’t miss out on the following specialities:

  • Cha muc (Grilled chopped squid)
  • Sam (Horseshoe Crab)
  • Fresh prawns and lobster
  • Ngan (Austriella Corrugata)

To continue with your Vietnam and Cambodia holiday in 2 weeks , from Hanoi, let’s take a flight to Da Nang, then get on a bus to Hoi An old town.

In 1999, Hoi An is described by UNESCO as “an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century”. Therefore, the architecture and culture in Hoi An is a unique mixture of many different styles (Chinese, Japanese and European influences).

During your trip in Hoi An, we would recommend you start a walking tour with numerous places of interest: the 400-year old Japanese Covered Bridge, the Phuc Kien Assembly Halls, a museum and the colorful local market. Following the narrow lanes, you walk along tiny

streets with houses influenced by Chinese, Japanese, French and European architectures. You can also purchase locally produced products, from faux leather and silk, to fruit shirts, paper lanterns, dried fish and shredded pork, ground coffee, and even custom-shoe tailors.

Besides exploring Hoi An on foot, there are various additional activities you can join. You can join a cooking class, visit rural villages around Hoi An by bicycle, or take a day trip to My Son Ruins.

Hoi An is famous as a food lovers’ destination with many local specialities to eat. Below are some local amazing dishes you can try in Hoi An:

  • Cao lau (Rice noodles with barbecued pork, greens and croutons)
  • Com ga (chicken rice)
  • My Quang (Vietnamese turmeric noodles)
  • Banh xeo (Crispy pancake)
  • Bun thit nuong (Vermicelli noodles with grilled pork).

Hue is a charming city with many beautiful landscapes. As a result, it could not be missed out on your Vietnam Cambodia trip in 2 weeks. If you are a history lover, or simply enjoy exotic cultures, Hue- Vietnam’s former Royal Capital is definitely a perfect destination.

Let’s spend the full day for a city tour of the Imperial City of Hue, firstly with the ancient walled Citadel including the former Imperial Palace. It was once the home of Vietnam’s emperors. Then visit the Dong Ba market to learn about local produce and specialties of Hue. You might get some great deals done at the local Dong Ba Market.

In the afternoon, you can cruise the Perfume River by a dragon boat. It is where you can enjoy the river views, have a meal and visit some of the major tourist sites around the area.

However, a stay in Hue would not be complete without a visit to the stunning Imperial Tombs of Hue, including the tombs of Minh Mang, Khai Dinh and Tu Duc Kings. You can get to many of the tomb sites with an organised guided tour by car or motorbike.

While in Hue, it is obvious that you can not miss a chance to taste Hue’s simple, yet sophisticated dishes. The way Hue people make and eat food represents the way they live their lives. Here are a list of Hue dishes which you should enjoy when you come to this old capital:

  • Hue Rice dumplings (Banh beo, banh nam & banh loc)
  • Bun bo Hue (Hue’s beef noodle)
  • Com hen, Bun hen (Baby clams with rice or noodle)
  • Benh ep (Savoury pancake)
  • Bun Thit Nuong (Grilled pork noodle).

5. Ho Chi Minh city

Another must-visit destination in your 2-week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary is Ho Chi Minh City, an overwhelming place – and not just because of the traffic. There is so much to do here, whether you’re a lover of history, art, cuisine, culture or nightlife. Therefore it is easy to understand why you may feel worry you will leave something out. But don’t be so panic, here are what you should do.

If you want to visit the inner town, one day is just enough. You can start your visit with a guided city tour starting with the War Remnants Museum – a real eye-opener to a part of Vietnam’s proud history. Then the Reunification Palace – the former South Vietnam Presidential Palace. Not very far from the museum are two other major tourist attractions: Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office. For those who have a passion for local products and specialties, do not forget to drop by Ben Thanh market. It is where you can buy almost everything from clothes, souvenirs, jewelry, food.

Ho Chi Minh city (also known as Sai Gon) is Vietnam’s culinary capital. It is home to the best of Vietnam’s mouthwatering local dishes – the North, the Centre and the South. It is also the crossroad of culinary cultures, from the Oriental cuisine to Western cuisine. So it is easy to find the food you want here.

6. Mekong Delta

Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh city, let’s head south to visit of the Mekong Delta, cruising among local barges full of fruits and vegetables. This will leave you will lots of fun memorable experiences for your Vietnam Cambodia tour. The Mekong Delta is referred to as the country’s ‘rice bowl’, and it accounts for 70% of Vietnam’s overall fruit output.

You can board a rowing boat, which will take you deeper into the countryside on smaller canals to enjoy the peacefulness of the Delta. You will also see traditional houses made of wood and palm tree leaves and see some activities of the local farmers. You will have an opportunity to interact with them and see how they catch fish or pick up fruits by ancestral ways in Mekong Delta. Cycling along village paths is another great option to help you see the local farms, houses, real life of the Mekong Delta people.

Then, you can make a stop at local workshops where you can see how to make rice paper, coconut candy and pop-rice, pop-corn…You can also visit a handicraft village where you can see how they make rice-net for spring-rolls, fish sauce, soya sauce, cooking salt, sewing coconut-leaves for cottage roof.

The day after, you can hop on a boat cruise to visit the vibrant Cai Rang floating market. This is where you will experience a “strange” type of market, in which all purchasing activities take place on boats and ships. Then continue to a small canal to visit a fruit garden, where you can enjoy many kinds of delicious fruits.

The best way to get a real taste of the region is through its fabulous specialties and delicacies. And here are our suggestions:

  • Bun ca (Fish cake noodle soup)
  • Hu tieu My Tho (My Tho noodle soup)
  • Ca tai tuong (Elephant ear fish)
  • Lau ca keo (Goby fish hotpot)

7. Siem Reap – Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm

Another worth-your-visit place that must be included in your 2 week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary is Siem Reap, which attracts millions of visitors each year from all over the world. The small provincial town has grown into a big tourist hub and continues to grow each year. From Ho Chi Minh city, you can take a flight to Siem Riep to start exploring this town.

You can devote the whole morning or afternoon to Angkor Wat, the largest, and for most people, the most impressive temple in the complex. Later, take a walk to the summit of Phnom Bakheng Hill for a panorama of the whole complex lit by the rays of the setting sun.

The day after, you can continue the Cambodia and Vietnam itinerary with Angkor Temple complex. Do not forget to visit Angkor Thom, starting with the Bayon, a bizarre structure of several architectural changes reflecting a switch from Hinduism (the foundations) to Buddhism (the superstructure). After that, pay a visit to the Elephant and Leper King Terraces, followed by the Baphuon Temple, which is now nearing the end of an eight-year multi-million dollar restoration programme.

You can also take on a drive to Siem Reap River where you will take a boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake to visit the village of Kompong Phluk. You can ‘go native’ aboard a dugout canoe for a paddle through the flooded forest near the village.

While you may be anxious to explore the ancient ruins, why not sample the local Khmer cuisine as well? Here are 5 dishes to add to your list:

  • Pumpkin duck egg custard
  • Khmer herb cocktails
  • Num banh chok

We hope that the 2 week Vietnam Cambodia itinerary we map out is useful for you all. If you still have any troubles, do not hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to support you to make sure you get the best fulfillment for your Cambodia and Vietnam tour.

7. Day 6: FULL DAY ANGKOR TOUR

7.1. what to visit.

Coming to Angkor, you have many beautiful places to visit such as:

Angkor Wat

The Angkor Wat temple complex, rising from the jungle as the star of the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archeological Park, is a 12th-century engineering marvel. In the shadowy corridors, look for intricate carvings of nymphs dancing on columns, serpent-topped balustrades, and massive, chiseled bas-reliefs depicting Khmer Empire battles. Despite being designed as a microcosm of the universe, it’s difficult to get lost here, as the complex is divided into three easy-to-navigate tiers.

Ta Prohm, which Angelina Jolie explored in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, is commonly referred to as “the Tomb Raider temple.” It’s one of Angkor’s—and Cambodia’s—signature sights, a 12th-century Buddhist monastery, and temple complex enmeshed in a web of towering tree roots that stands as an eerie symbol of the transience of human endeavor.

The Bayon, the geographical and spiritual center of the ancient city of Angkor Thom, is one of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII’s crowning artistic achievements. Around 200 massive faces peer down from around 50 towers, while beautifully crafted reliefs depict daily life in 12th-century Cambodia.

7.2. What to eat?

There are some famous restaurants in Angkor:

Stoeng Trorcheak Restaurant

The shady gardens of this sprawling restaurant on the banks of the Roluos River are a great place to cool off during the day. Cambodian classics, Chinese favorites, Thai appetizers, and international fare are all on the menu. Many of the tables are set beneath attractive thatched pavilions, but there is also some indoor air-conditioning.

Natural Vegetable Food Place

This restaurant specializes in organic vegetables grown in its own gardens and is located amid extensive farmland on the road between Siem Reap and Roluos. There are also fish and meat dishes available, but they all come with a variety of freshly grown vegetables such as okra, long beans, and cucumber, as well as a spicy prahok ktis dip (fermented fish and herbs).

On the northwestern corner of Sra Srang, the former royal bathing pond, is Ktom Sre, a simple Cambodian restaurant. Food is served in bamboo picnic huts, and the signature coconut roast chicken is served in a banana leaf, as it was before the introduction of polystyrene and plastic.

Khmer Village Restaurant

This is one of the largest restaurants on the Sra Srang strip, and thanks to a large dining area with moisture-cooled fans and an air-conditioned room, it does a brisk lunchtime business. The menu is extensive, with dishes from Cambodia, China, Thailand, and other countries.

7.3. Where to stay?

There are some places you can stay in Angkor

Sojourn Boutique Villas

One of the most unique places to stay in Siem Reap is also one of the most caring. Sojourn is a socially responsible resort with ten villas set within palm-filled gardens surrounding a swimming pool that helps the poor residents of Treak village, where the property is located. The majority of the employees are Treak residents, and 7% of profits go to a village enrichment program that includes water filters, garbage collection, and tree grants. Guests can take a “walk-and-talk” tour of the village, chatting with locals and visiting a less-frequented pagoda and Khmer temple. There are also cooking classes, moonlit theater, and destination dining options, such as breakfast on TonlĂ© Sap.

Sojournsiemreap.com, Treak Village Road, Treak Village, +855 12 923 437, Treak Village. B&B doubles from ÂŁ68.20

Sala Lodges

Don’t be surprised if you end up photographing this lovely new property as much as you do the Unesco-listed temples you’ve come to see. There are 11 Khmer-style timber houses on stilts scattered around sprawling gardens of sugar palms and banana plants for guests to stay in. Traditional houses with high ceilings and spacious verandas are furnished with rustic wooden furniture and handmade Cambodian quilts, as well as modern touches like contemporary rocking chairs. The Monolith restaurant serves local produce such as TonlĂ© Sap fish served with avocado purĂ©e and wild rice mango salad, while Long Table offers communal dining and an alfresco lounge.

7.4. What to do?

  • Proceed to Bayon’s serene smiling-faced tower temple.
  • Visit Ta Prohm, which was featured in the Tomb Raider movie and is overgrown by huge tree monsters with snake-like roots.
  • Take in the entire view of Angkor Wat temple, rice paddies, the northeast highlands, and West Baray’s active reservoir, as well as get some fresh air on the summit of Phnom Bakheng hill.

Inside a 10-day, Hyper-Local Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary

Angkor Thom East Gate in Siem Reap, Cambodia by Paul Szewczyk via Unsplash.

With unique geography,  cities both bustling and friendly,  centuries of vibrant history and world-class food around every corner, there’s no shortage of reasons to visit Vietnam and Cambodia.

But planning a balanced itinerary that makes the most of a short time in both countries can be tricky.  Is it too much to ask to get lost in the mystery of Angkor Wat and cruise the island-studded waters of Ha Long Bay in a timeframe that’s compatible with your busy life at home? (Spoiler: it’s not!)

Here we’ll take a look inside the 10-night Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary our experiential travel groups experience,  which balances the very best sites,  excursions and tastes of Vietnam and Cambodia  – all with a focus on hyper-local experiences.

Why Visit Vietnam and Cambodia?

A visit to Vietnam and Cambodia is a must for any adventure-hearted traveler who loves mouth-watering food,  ancient history,  jaw-dropping scenery and genuinely friendly people without an overbearing tourist scene.

Let’s dive a little deeper into what you’ll experience when you visit these two neighboring countries in the heart of Southeast Asia – and why visiting Vietnam and Cambodia is a choice you won’t regret.

In our official Vietnam and Cambodia Yoga Adventure description , we boldly claim that you’ll taste street food worthy of any Food Channel series, and we stand by that!

From bĂĄnh mi (the classic Vietnamese baguette sandwich) in Hanoi to bĂĄnh bột lọc (beautifully translucent shrimp and pork dumplings) in Hue, you’ll quickly learn that some of Vietnam and Cambodia’s best foods are served on the street.

And when you follow the local crowds, it’s hard to go wrong. (Trust us, street-eating etiquette comes naturally when you’re speaking the universal language of shared deliciousness!)

But the food scene doesn’t end on the streets – Vietnam and Cambodia are also brimming with restaurants both rustic and gourmet.

The History

The ancient temples around Siem Reap, Cambodia, are the stuff of record books – for one thing, the sprawling temple complex of Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world!

But as you explore the surrounding jungle, you’ll discover that Angkor Wat is just one of many awe-inspiring historical sites. On our Yoga Adventure , we venture off the beaten path with visits to Angkor Thom, Banteay Srei and Ta Prohm. (Haven’t heard of those? That’s exactly our point!)

Both Vietnam and Cambodia have developed through multicultural interactions both peaceful and turbulent. So there’s much to learn at every stop along the way.

Diving into a new culture is always a little intimidating, but the people of both Vietnam and Cambodia are known for their friendliness.

You’ll cross language barriers with shared smiles and laughter, whether you’re visiting a classroom in a floating village,  practicing tai chi with the women of Hanoi or chanting with Cambodian monks at dawn.

We do all these things (and more!) on our Yoga Adventure because if there’s one thing we’ve learned in our years of curating adventure itineraries,  it’s that Vietnam and Cambodia are perfect places to immerse yourself locally (despite being thousands of miles from home!)

The Scenery

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here’s a picture of Ha Long Bay, in Vietnam:

Ha Long Bay by Lewis J Goetz via Unsplash.

And emerald-green,  cliffy islands that plunge into clear turquoise water are just the beginning. There’s also massive limestone caves to explore, rolling farmland to bike through and mysterious jungles to wander.

The Tourist Scene

You might know neighboring Thailand is quite saturated with tourists, so you’re right to wonder if the same is true of Vietnam and Cambodia! But we have good news:

Vietnam is much less touristed than Thailand, but just as friendly and safe. And Cambodia is less visited than both Thailand and Vietnam.

Translation? Both countries are set up to accommodate foreign travelers (see the stunning boutique hotels in our Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary for prime examples!), but you won’t be surrounded by other visitors at every turn.

Can You See Vietnam and Cambodia in 10 days?

So, you’ve decided you want to visit Vietnam and Cambodia (congratulations!) but you don’t have a ton of vacation time to spare and you still want to experience both countries.

Fear not – it’s very possible to soak up the very best of Vietnam and Cambodia in 10 days.

The key is to have a perfectly planned Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary : one that’s packed with excursions every day while offering you the opportunity to ground down and integrate everything you’re taking in.

For the “staying grounded” part, we swear by a daily yoga practice. Our trips aren’t yoga retreats; they’re yoga adventures. Our groups start nearly every day with a yoga practice so they can dive into whatever cultural or nature-packed activities are on the agenda feeling limber, calm, and fully present.

Day-by-Day Vietnam and Cambodia Itinerary

With that, here’s a peek into our 10-day Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary (technically it’s 11 days if you count the final departure day!). This is how we make so much happen in a relatively short period of time.

We start in the north,  in bustling Hanoi and work our way to the ancient temples of Siem Reap, Cambodia,  with plenty of stops to spend time with local people, take in dramatic scenery and indulge in delicious food.

Map of our route via our website.

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam, and share a dinner at a local restaurant before sleeping off the jet lag.

Day 2: Boat to the island temple of Ngoc Son, explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and sample your first street food.

Day 3: Cruise by sailboat through the jaw-dropping Ha Long Bay, stopping for a visit to a floating village and finishing the day with sunset yoga and dinner on deck.

Day 4: After a night aboard the boat, sail to Sung Sot Cave and marvel at the 100-foot-high cavern before returning to Hanoi.

Day 5: Fly from Hanoi to Hue (short flights cut down on drive time!) and explore your second Vietnamese city on foot before a tasty dinner.

Day 6: Cycle and boat your way down the Perfume River, visiting an ancient village and the Forbidden Purple City.

Day 7: Take the (scenic!) drive through Da Nang and on to Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll have time to immerse yourself in the port city’s nautical history before a lantern-making workshop and dinner.

Day 8: Explore Hoi An by bike and share lunch with a local family before packing up for an evening flight to Siem Reap – you’ve arrived in Cambodia!

Day 9: Go deep into history with visits to the remote temples of Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm in the morning, followed by a full afternoon exploring the magnificence of Angkor Wat.

Day 10: Join Buddhist monks for morning chants and then journey to the long-off-limits Banteay Srei, the Hindu “Citadel of Women.” Spend the afternoon wandering (and bargaining!) your way through Siem Reap’s Old Market.

Day 11 – Departure day! Wake up and pack for your journey home.

Adventure Awaits in Vietnam and Cambodia

Can you already see yourself on the deck of a sailboat cruising toward a floating village in Ha Long Bay? Or feel the history hanging in the air as you explore the jungle paths around Angkor Wat?

The (yoga) adventure of a lifetime awaits you. When you visit Vietnam and Cambodia with us, you’ll take all the guesswork out of itinerary planning so you can focus more on savoring moments in the company of local guides and like-minded adventurers.

Must-try activities

There is a diverse array of charming sites and hidden alleys to uncover in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. Depending on your priority, you shouldn’t neglect the two out-of-the-world traditional performances which are found nowhere else in Vietnam.

The first recommendation is attached to Water Puppet Show where adorable puppets are performed by talented puppeteers on water stage in theme of folk music. This kind of traditional art presents inspiring ancient tales, folklores and daily life in Vietnamese countryside.

Water puppet show at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

The other choice could be Tu Phu (Four Palaces) Show , which features a uniquely ritual spirit practiced in the Vietnam indigenous religion with vibrant music, colors and lively dance performances. The second day goes for a half-day city tour with a flexibility of departure time (morning or afternoon) and means of transport (motorbike or bus) based on your interests and availability. The routes can change subject to your preference, but we highly recommend these city attractions below.

After breakfast, get ready for a heritage tour experience !

Visit the Independence Monument, the 20-metre high monument in shape of a lotus which can be frequently seen at Angkor and other Khmer historical sites. The monument was built to celebrate Cambodia’s independence in the past, and today it is the site for celebrations of formal national ceremonies.

The Independence Monument in Siem Reap

Continue the tour to Royal Palace Compound, one of the most impressive colourful Khmer-style palaces and Silver Pagoda, the Emerald Buddha Temple displaying numerous Buddha status made of diamond, emerald, gold and silver. The last stop is at National Museum, the distinctive red building in a stunning Khmer architecture since 1917. This site contains more than 5000 art objects made of sandstone, bronze, silver, copper, wood and others.

Upon arrival Siem Reap, you’ll get to Borei Seang Nam station in the late afternoon and transfer to check in at hotel for refreshment. Siem Reap is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Archaeological Park which is roughly 7 kilometres away.

There is a variety of Khmer massage and spa treatments or even fish massage. So, put your feet up as you prepare for your visit tomorrow.

It is worth spending all day at the should-not-miss Angkor Wat Complex, a source of inspiration and national pride of Cambodia. The Angkor sites resemble the epic proportions of the Great Wall of China, the detail and intricacy of the Taj Mahal along with the symbolism and symmetry of the pyramids.

Your morning visit starts with the jungle Ta Prohm Temple, which is embraced by the roots of enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers. Transfer to the antique capital of Angkor Thom, where the exploration kicks off at the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk.

Ta Prohm, Angkor, 15-Day Vietnam-Cambodia Itinerary 18

Ta Prohm, the ruined jungle temple

Behind the Gate, the Bayon Temple awaits you to uncover its 54 Khmer-decorated towers which illustrate over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara. The rest of Angkor Thom includes a Hindu temple in Khleang style called the Phimeanakas; the Royal Enclosure which housed the palace complex of the Angkor kings; the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

In the afternoon, it’s time to discover the heart and soul of all temples on the plain, the Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing.

Every eyewitness who once speculated the real Angkor Wat will understand why its 5 distinctive towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian national flag. It’s truly a masterpiece of the prime classical Khmer art and architecture.

Before leave the Angkor Wat, don’t forget to behold a marvellous sunset view from the complex or anywhere possible.

The beautiful sunset over the Angkor Wat

If you’re on a tour package, you’ll have a pleasant time for buffet dinner while being entertained by a Khmer Traditional Dance Show at a restaurant in Siem Reap.

This is the only day for you to freely pursue your own interests. So, list some worth-visit destinations beyond the Angkor temples to accomplish your Cambodia itinerary .

Perhaps hitting the markets for tons of appetizing dishes is the top recommendation. There is the Old Market at Phsar Chas, where you can feel the authentic Cambodian taste of some spices, multicoloured arrays of fresh produce, crispy fried tarantulas, octopus, chicken feet, etc.

If you’re in search of something tamer, give a try to fried banana kebabs, roasted corn or banana-chocolate pancakes.

In case you’re too busy during the daylight, you can still get the market experience at the Angkor Night Market.

For those in pursuit of relaxation, indulge yourself in a traditional Khmer massage after a long previous day of temple-touring. There are dozens of spas offering reflexology, massages with fresh local ingredients. With only USD3-USD5, you can completely immerse in a “fish massage” to nibble dead skin from your toes thanks to tiny fishes.

Experience “fish massage” in Siem Reap

Last but not least, take a traditional cooking class to get one final insight into the heart of Cambodia cuisines. Khmer chef instructors will show you how to identify and mix the mysterious ingredients that you’ll need to create your culinary masterpiece.

You’ll have the last morning in Siem Reap with scanty time for further activities. Depending on departure time, you can take advantage of spare time to get around for souvenirs. Siem Reap is paradise of handicrafts, sculptures, weaving silk to Kampot pepper . Make sure you have experiences in choosing the best Cambodian mementos to bring home.

Cambodian souvenirs, 15-Day Vietnam-Cambodia Itinerary 23

Cambodian souvenirs, scarves and elephants made of textiles

Usually the hotel room is available until 12 pm, so take your time for packing and checking out on time. Leaving for the hotel, transfer to Siem Reap International Airport for boarding home.

Literally, 15 days are insufficient to explore the endless surprises of impressive history, marvellous landmarks and fascinating cuisines in these two Indochina countries.

Definitely, that’s what a travel agency is for. Instead of organizing everything on your own, you can take into consideration a Vietnam &a Cambodia Tour, where a perfect itinerary is made up to fulfil your wanderlust.

The Best of Vietnam and Cambodia Suggested Itinerary

An itinerary that masterfully blends the colourful cities of Cambodia and Vietnam with downtime in tranquil pockets of these mesmerising countries.

Hanoi is the perfect springboard for your journey, awakening your senses in your first three days. Moving through ever-changing gears, you’ll cruise Halong Bay, boat along the Perfume River, and get swept up in the melee of Ho Chi Minh city, ending on a reflective note in the temples of Siem Reap.

Recommended itinerary

The capital of Vietnam is the perfect introduction to your adventure. Between the t’ai chi at dawn, the waft of beef noodle soup in the air, and the horns and revs of scooters, you’ll get that glorious “I’ve arrived!” feeling. A private driver and guide will take you to the city hotspots, returning you to the peaceful sanctuary of the Mövenpick to relax after a busy day exploring.

It would be remiss to visit this part of the world and not see the beautiful Halong Bay. Boarding a traditional-style junk and taking an overnight cruise makes sure you see the best of it. There’s the chance to kayak through caves and find a quiet patch on a private beach, too.

Halong Bay

You’ll fly from Hanoi to Hue to spend the next couple of nights in a countryside retreat outside Hue. You’re here long enough to spend a day exploring the highlights of Vietnam’s former capital, possibly including traditional dragon boat trip.

Hoi An

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll fly to Ho Chi Minh City next, formerly known as Saigon. Here, you’ve got four nights to get to know this sensory metropolis. Two full-day tours help fuel your discoveries: the first is with a private driver and guide to take you to the must-see places, and the second is a boat trip along the Mekong Delta, where you’ll get a glimpse into the lives of the local people.

Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll fly to Siem Reap next, checking into Tara Angkor for three final nights. A private tour of Angkor Wat takes you to the most famous spots in this intriguing epicentre of the Khmer civilisation. End the trip on a high and upgrade to a sunset champagne cruise.

Vietnam & Cambodia: 6 Days DIY Itinerary and Travel Guide

Vietnam Cambodia Itinerary

This 2018, I started my international travels with a flight to our neighbor Southeast Asian countries – Vietnam & Cambodia. And before you even say “Aren’t those countries look like Manila?”, I’ll answer you with a big YES! After almost a week in Viet-Cam, I witnessed how their cities are less advanced than Manila and how the locals look like Filipinos too. So before you even start your trip to Indochina, I challenged you to shift your focus on this countries.

Focus on their rich history and culture. Focus on their architecture and majestic temples. Focus on their food and extra good coffee. And most of all, focus on the people you’ll meet on your journey.

And when you do, you’ll definitely love it. Plus, it’s cheap!

All About Indochina

vietnam and cambodia travel itinerary

It was only in my trip that I learned that Indochina originally refers to the colonies, consists of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, of the French empire before. But now it is referred to be as the “Mainland Southeast Asia” and the land historically influenced and bounded by India (in the west) and China (in the north). Indochina now consists of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore.

It is very common for travelers to visit multi-cities when heading to the Indochina region for months. But the famous route would be the Thailand – Cambodia – Vietnam by bus for 7-10 days. Since I’ve been to Thailand before, I decided to just explore Vietnam and Cambodia.

If you wanted more than Viet-Cam then here’s some itineraries from other travel bloggers:

Thailand – Cambodia – Vietnam for 7 Days Cambodia – Vietnam – Thailand – Laos for 6 Days Singapore – Malaysia – Thailand – Cambodia – Vietnam for 19 Day

Vietnam2018

First thing you need to do is decide where to start and end so you’ll be able to know where your entry point and exit point are. I booked a multi city flight from Manila to Ho Chi Minh & Siem Reap to Manila via Cebu Pacific for 6,200 pesos, three months before the travel dates. P.S. You can also check the other way around to compare airfare prices.

There are only two airlines – Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines – who offer direct flights from Manila to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. While only Cebu Pacific offers direct flight from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Manila.

Itinerary (with Expenses)

Vietnam-Cambodia Itinerary

7 PM – Flight to Ho Chi Minh (via CebPac)

There are no morning flights available in Cebu Pacific to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Most of the flights are 10 PM but there are days where they offer flights as early as 7 PM.

9 PM – Arrival in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

Travel time is almost 3 hours but Vietnam is one hour delayed than Manila. Their airport is called Tan Son Nhat International Airport which is a lot like NAIA.

Ho Chi Minh Vietnam

10 PM – Check-in in Cititel Boutique

We took an Uber to our hotel since it will only cost us around 100,000VND (~200PHP) and also to save us from the hassle of our luggage and taxi scams. I booked our hotel through Agoda for 5,700PHP for 3 nights. The hotel is nice, near the backpacker street Pham Ngu Lao and 5-10 minutes walk to the city attractions.

10:30 PM – Find a place to eat in Pham Ngu Lao Street.

It can be scary to walk at night in Ho Chi Minh because of the dark street. You can opt to try the GrabMoto or UberMoto. It will only cost you around 12,000 VND (30PHP)

Uber to hotel – 67 PHP (P200/3) Dinner near hotel- 120 PHP Sim Card (via Klook ) – 233 PHP TOTAL : 520 PHP

7 AM – Breakfast

Our hotel has a free breakfast buffet. It is nothing big but enough to start our day. Restaurants are still not open at 7 am but cafes do. Oh, don’t forget to try their coffee!

9 AM – Reunification Palace

We started our city walking tour with Reunification Palace. It is a government palace that serves as home and workplace of the president of South Vietnam during the war. The place is more on history and he different beautiful rooms of a palace.

Entrance fee: 40,000 VND (~100 PHP/ 2USD)

10:30 AM – War Remnant Museum

10 minutes walk away from Reunification Palace is War Remnant Museum. As the name implies, this is a museum of photos and tanks used during the Vietnam War. This place is heartbreaking so prepare your heart.

Entrance fee is also 40,000 VND (~100PHP / 2USD)

Vietnam 2018

12:30 PM – Lunch

Finding restaurants around is easy. We found this cute cafe near the War Remnant Museum. Prices are almost the same with Manila’s. Each dish will cause you around 90,000 VND (~200 PHP). If you’re on a tight budget, there are some carienderias around.

Vietnam 2018

2 PM – Notre Dame Basilica

The basilica is under construction when we visited (and I heard it will be completed on 2020, correct me if I’m wrong). You can’t enter so there’s nothing much to do but admire it outside.

2:15 PM – Saigon Central Post Office

Beside Notre Dame is the post office. One famous thing to do here is to send yourself or your friends postcards from around the world. There are souvenir shops as well inside. Sending a postcard to the Philippines will cost you around 300 PHP.

Vietnam 2018

P.S. I made a mistake by going to War Remnant Museum first. It is better to visit Notre Dame and the Post Office in the morning after Reunification Palace to avoid the afternoon heat . Then spend the afternoon indoor in War Remnant Museum.

3 PM – Nguyen Street

Nguyen Street is a walking street where the French colonial architecture is still visible. You can see here the City hall, Ho Chi Minh’s Statue, Saigon’s Opera House, a good view of Bitexco Financial Center and lots of cafes and fashion stalls. If it’s too hot for you, then go chill on Apartment Cafe.

Vietnam 2018

4:30 PM – Ben Thanh Market

Unfortunately, Ben Thanh market closes around 5 PM. Went inside for 30 minutes but the place is chaotic and humid. There’s fresh meat, fruits, souvenirs and bad quality bags inside.

5:30 PM – Saigon Square

If you want to shop, then head to Saigon Square. The clothes are nice and you can buy class A Kipling and North Face bags. It is a lot better than Ben Thanh. We went to Saigon Square 1, just near Ben Thanh. Clothes starts from 150000 VND.

Vietnam 2018

9:30 PM – Ben Thanh Night Market

Around 9 PM, the street beside Ben Thanh Market is closed to give way to the night market. It is a lot better than the market itself. There are street foods, souvenirs, and clothes around. It reminded me of Khao San Road in Bangkok.

Reunification Palace entrance – 92 PHP War Remnant Museum – 92 PHP Lunch – 300 PHP Shopping at Saigon Square – 800 PHP Dinner (+ Street foods) – 250 PHP Souvenir & Pasalubong Shopping – 1000 PHP TOTAL : 2,534 PHP

8 AM – Meet up for Cu Chi Tunnel Tour (via Klook)

I book a half day tour Cu Chi Tunnel Experience via Klook for only 673 PHP. Cu Chi is almost 2 hours+ away and it is somehow hard to DIY it. Meet up is in De Tham Street, in front of Starbucks Coffee and mostly the place where there’s a swarm of people.

8:30 AM – Travel to Cu Chi Tunnels

Tour starts on time so avoid getting late.

10:00 AM – Stop Over

We stopped by a showroom of the artworks of the victims of Agent Orange*. You can buy the beautiful arts they produced to help them with their medical bills.

*Agent Orange is a powerful herbicides that the US Military used to the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. It has a lot of medical effects that are still experienced by the 2nd generation Vietnamese.

Vietnam 2018

11:00 AM – Cu Chi Firing Range

If you are a fan of guns then you’ll definitely enjoy the first stop. You can fire machine guns, M16s, AK47s, and other more. You just need to buy the bullet that cost around 35,000 VND each (minimum of 10). I was not able to get inside the firing range because the sound is too much for me.

Vietnam 2018

12:00 NN – Start of Cu Chi Tunnel Tour

Since we booked a tour with Klook, we already have a tour guide to guide us in the forest. The history behind the tunnels is interesting, fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. The highlight is crawling the tunnel yourself. If you are claustrophobic, then this will be a big NO for you.

Cu Chi Tunnels

2 PM – On the way back to Ho Chi Minh City

The tour is not actually a half day. It almost took a whole day since we arrived in HCM around 4 PM already.

4 PM – Free time to shop or roam around the city

Cu Chi Tunnel (via Klook) – 673 PHP Fruit Shake – 80 PHP Late Lunch / Early Dinner – 350 PHP Iced Coffee – 50 PHP TOTAL: 1,153 PHP

P.S. You can also opt to visit Mekong Delta . (or both if you have another day to spare)

8:30 AM – Cat Mekong Delta Express

Mekong Express Bus is what we availed of our trip. It only costs us 12 USD/each inclusive of water, bread, & a guide that helped us in the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Here’s the schedule.

Vietnam2018

11:30 PM – Vietnam – Cambodia Border

Before arriving to the border, the guide will collect all your passports in the bus. You’ll be asked to get out of the bus and wait for your guide to submit your passport in Vietnam’s immigration officers. After your passport has been stamped, the bus will take you to Cambodia’s immigration office (only 3 minutes away). Again, you need to get off the bus and line up individually for your arrival stamp.

Cambodia has a visa on arrival for 30 USD. If you are from a Southeast Asian country, the visa is free.

P.S. Beware of buying sim cards outside the Cambodia borders. Look for Cellcard’s booth for legit ones.

3 PM – Arrival to Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Travel time is 6 hours+ depends on the traffic and how busy the border is. Don’t worry about lunch since Mekong have a 20 minutes lunch stopover. Phnom Penh streets are scarier than Ho Chi Minh’s. Take care of your belongings and prefer to use Uber/Grab.

3:30 PM – Check in to Asia Tune Hotel

Asia tune hotel

I booked a triple room in Asia Tune Hotel via Agoda for 2,500 PHP and I didn’t expect for a nice room for such price. It is also near the Royal Palace.

6 PM – Dinner along Mekong River

There are a lot of restaurants near the Mekong River. We tried Khmer Saravan Restaurant for authentic Cambodian food.

Phnom Penh

Bus to Phnom Penh – 630 PHP Cellcard Sim Card (5GB) – 250 PHP Carienderia lunch – 200 PHP Taxi from drop off to hotel – 40 PHP (P120/3) Dinner – 250 PHP TOTAL: 1,370 PHP

8 AM – Breakfast

Asia Tune offers a complimentary breakfast. So much love for this hotel!

9:30 AM – Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda

This is the equivalent of Grand Palace of Bangkok. It is the royal residence of the king of Cambodia. Entrance fee: 10 USD (~500 PHP)

Royal Palace

10:30 AM – National Museum of Cambodia

Entrance fee: 10 USD (~500 PHP)

vietnam and cambodia travel itinerary

11:30 AM – Independence Monument

Ask you tuktuk driver to drop you in the Independence Monument for some photo ops.

vietnam and cambodia travel itinerary

12 NN – LUNCH

1 pm – tuol sleng genocide museum.

I advice you to take your lunch first before heading here. This museum is once an execution center during the Khmer Rouge but now houses photos and evidences of torture and genocide happened. This is too much for the faint heart. Entrance fee: 5 USD (~250 PHP)

vietnam and cambodia travel itinerary

4 PM – Flight to Siem Reap

I was able to score 30 USD flight to Siem Reap via Cambodia Angkor Air. It is almost double of the 15 USD bus fare but I don’t want to waste another 6 hours on the road.

P.S. Cambodia Angkor Air domestic plane is seriously dirty!

5 PM – Arrival to Siem Reap/ Check in with Rithy Rine Angkor Residence

Siem Reap seems like a different country from Phnom Penh. It is safer, cheaper and has the countryside vibes. Again, I booked Rithy Rine via Agoda for 6,200 for 2 nights inclusive of breakfast and roundtrip airport shuttle.

7 PM – Angkor Night Market/ Pub Street

One good thing with our hotel is it is only a walking distance to Angkor Night Market & Pub Street. Dinner is a little expensive here starting from 5 USD but carienderias are also around. If you are going shopping, haggle!

Untitled

Tuktuk to Royal Palace – 34 PHP (P100/3) Royal Palace entrance – 500 PHP Tuktuk back to hotel – 34 PHP (P100/3) Taxi to Phnom Penh Airport – 88 PHP (P262/3) Airfare to Siem Reap – 1500 PHP Dinner – 250 PHP Foot Massage – 150 PHP TOTAL :2,556 PHP

4:30 AM – Angkor Wat Sunrise Watching

We hired a tuk-tuk via our hotel (8 USD) to take us to Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise. We were driven first to the ticket office. 1 Day Pass costs 37 USD (~2,000 PHP).  We chose not to see all the temples (only the famous ones) to be able to squeeze it on one day.

Untitled

6:30 AM – Back to hotel/Breakfast

Our tuktuk drove us back to our hotel for breakfast and to wait for our Angkor Wat Tour Exploration with Klook.

8:00 AM – Explore Angkor Tour (via Klook)

We decided to book Klook’s Explore Angkor Tour to maximize our day pass and for the inclusive tour guide. Klook picked up at our hotel at 8 AM and started our temple run with Angkor Wat. If you travel for good photos then I advised you to just rent a tuk-tuk because this tour can be a little fast phased.

CAmbodia 2018

11 AM – Ta Phrom

Another famous temple in Siem Reap is the Ta Phrom or commonly known as the Tomb Raider temple. This is where most of the scenes in Tomb Raider were filmed.

CAmbodia 2018

12:30 NN – Lunch

CAmbodia 2018

2 PM – Bayon Temple

Besides Angkor Wat complex is Angkor Thom. It also consists of different temples with Bayon as the most popular. It is the youngest of all temples and also known for its smiling faces.

CAmbodia 2018

3:30 PM – Phnom Bakheng

The last stop will be Phnom Bakheng to watch the sunset. There’s a 10-minute hike to the top of the hill and another queue to the top of Phnom Bakheng.

CAmbodia 2018

5:30 PM – Travel Back to hotel

Tuktuk for Sunrise Exploration – 140 PHP (P415/3) Angkor Wat Day Pass – 1923 PHP Angkor Wat Exploration (via Klook) – 675 PHP Lunch – 400 PHP Ice Cream (in Bayon Temple) – 50 PHP Dinner – 150 PHP TOTAL: 3,338 PHP

10 AM – Woke up late

We were so tired of the whole day temples exploration. Seriously, you will too.

12 NN – Check out

We already checked out of our room but we left our bags in the reception so we can explore Siem Reap.

12:30 PM – Lunch at Psah Chas Alley

We stumbled upon this cute alley by accident and discovered the restaurants and shops along it. We ate our lunch in one of the restaurants here.

CAmbodia 2018

2 PM – Siem Reap Old Market

We shopped for our pasalubongs here. But Angkor Night Market has more to offer so you can choose to chill or swim in your hotel instead.

6 PM – Back to the Night Market for shopping and dinner

CAmbodia 2018

Prices are cheap but still don’t forget to HAGGLE!

8 PM – Travel to Siem Reap International Airport

Our hotel has a complimentary drop off at the airport.

11 PM – Going home to Manila

Cebu Pacific is the only airline that offers direct flight to Manila from Siem Reap. Flight is usually late at night.

Lunch – 250 PHP Pasalubongs & Souvenirs – 1000 PHP Dinner – 200 PHP TOTAL: 1,450 PHP

TOTAL EXPENSES:

Airfare – 6,000 PHP Travel Tax – 1,620 PHP Accommodations – 4,800 PHP (P5,700 + P2,500 + P6,200)/3 Food, Transpo & Tours – 10,000 PHP Shopping – 2,800 PHP GRAND TOTAL: 27,000 PHP

This itinerary is overpriced for the backpackers’ style travelers. This is more suitable for travelers who prefer comfort or for those who have kids and parents in tow. I chose to splurge a little for our accommodation. There are other cheaper choices.

Travel Guides

Foreign exchange tips.

NEVER exchange your Philippine Peso to Vietnamese Dong (VND) here in Manila. I exchanged my 5,100 PHP (100 USD) here for 1.7 Million VND. My mom chose to exchange her 100 USD to Vietnam and she got a freaking 2.25 Million VND! I lost 550,000 VND which cost around 1,250 PHP. *cries*

It is advisable to bring US Dollars in your Indochina trip.

Ho Chi Minh

Where to buy Sim Card?

I bought my sim card (Vinaphone) in Ho Chi Minh via Klook. It only cost 234 PHP for 2 GB data & local calls. It will also be delivered to your hotel which is a good thing since I don’t have enough time to look for telco stores.

In Cambodia, I bought a sim card (Cellcard) outside the border for 5 USD for 3 GB.

Best time to go?

The weather is the same with the Philippines. There’s hot and very hot. The best months are December to February since rainfall is minimal and the temperature is lower than summer months April-July.

How many days should I allot for each country?

We only have 2 full days in Ho Chi Minh and it wasn’t enough. If you wanted to see the city, Cu Chi tunnel & Mekong River, then 3 full days is advisable. 24 hours in Phnom Penh is enough. While in Siem Reap, it will depend on your budget. There are a lot of temples and it will require 3-5 days to see them all. So the question will always be how much are you willing to shell out for the Angkor Day Pass ($62 for 3 days; $72 for 7 days)? Next question will be, how many days are you willing to walk hundred of step?

Clothes are almost at the same price here in Manila. North Face products are the best buy on Vietnam since even their class A are in good quality and price. Cambodia has good quality sarongs and scarves. In terms of food pasalubongs, they only have dried fruits.

Other Intercity Bus Companies

Vietnam 2018

Kumho Samco

Vietnam 2018

There are two ways you can travel to Cambodia from Vietnam – by bus or by plane. Plane tickets can cost you around 150 USD one way .  If you’re willing to spend that much money, then book your ticket with Vietnam Airlines (Phnom Penh & Siem Reap entry) or Cambodia Angkor Air (Siem Reap entry only). If you want to save some money, then let’s stick with the bus.

Is it safe?

Amidst all the blogs and scams I’ve read online, I felt safe on Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap. But keep in mind to be still alert. Their money is confusing so avoid showing it to the vendors or drivers. They usually tricked tourist of getting the different value (e.g getting 100,000 bill instead of 10,000 bill). I’ve also heard a lot of scamming incident with habal-habal drivers offering you a city tour. Try to stick with Grab or Uber.

Phnom Penh, on the other hand, is the opposite. I felt like that someone will just grab my bag and phone even at noontime. Our tuk-tuk driver even warned us.

Cambodia

Before, I thought that Vietnam and Cambodia are the countries I’ll only be going once (the Philippines has a lot more to offer they said). I never saw myself enjoying these countries and thinking of going back someday. But I did. And I hope you will too.

I have done a small Indochina tour before but the countries I visited are Cambodia and Thailand. I’m going to Vietnam in a few months time, so thanks for sharing this! I’m kinda excited for the trip because I heard Vietnamese food is so good! I am also looking forward to visit Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum as I am really fascinated by war. Weird, I know. Lol.

Hi, I got it from the Cambodia Airways sale. 🙂

The Angkor Temples would really require at least 3 days to fully explore its vastness. Given my too limited attention span, it was a surprise not being easily templed out getting around the temples. I loved looking at the carvings which were to intricate especially at Bayon, Angkor Wat and Preah Khan. I didn’t get a chance to explore other places in IndoChina but I would surely love to be back and have this article as reference. Love the details you put out here. 😉
