The Perfect Pairing: Virtual Field Trips and Scavenger Hunts
“Mrs. Tucker, why don’t we go on more field trips?” Every year students ask me this question. There are a couple of answers.
- Field trips are time-consuming to organize and plan.
- There aren’t always resources (e.g., buses) available to make a field trip happen.
- We are limited by our geographic location to the sights/museums within driving distance.
In an effort to expose my students to more experiences, I’ve embraced virtual tours and field trips. In a recent training, I shared “ 15 Virtual Field Trips for Kids of All Ages, ” which has a fantastic collection of virtual field trips, and asked teachers to explore these virtual tours and brainstorm how they could use these online experiences to enhance their curriculum. One teacher asked, “How can you make sure students are paying attention and really learning something from these tours?” I explained that my favorite strategy was to pair a virtual field trip with a scavenger hunt.
The National Museums of Scotland has a “ Discover Ancient Egypt ” virtual experience that introduces students to Ancient Egypt through a combination of virtual tours and games.
Although the games are designed to keep students interested and engaged, adding a scavenger hunt component encourages them to think about what they are learning. When I used the “ Egyptian Tomb Adventure ” to create an online learning station, I paired the virtual tour with a Google Form Scavenger Hunt .
Students can tour the Louvre in Paris, the White House in Washington, or the Great Wall of China from the comfort of their classroom. These dynamic tours can be paired with offline pen and paper scavenger hunts or digital scavenger hunts using Google Forms.
As teachers create their scavenger hunts, it is important to add questions about what students will see and what they will read as they complete the tour. It’s tempting for students to simply look at the photos, artwork, and visuals but most tours contain text explanations as well. The goal of the scavenger hunt should be to encourage them to pay close attention to all parts of the virtual tour or field trip.
If you are inspired to create a scavenger hunt to complement a virtual tour or field trip, please consider sharing the link to the tour and your scavenger hunt here for other teachers to explore and use!

What a cool idea! I only wish this was around when I was in school…
I love this idea! I wish others had created some to share. If I have time to create one myself, I will share!

versailles and the ancient exhibition (2012-2013)
A political and aesthetic ideal, antiquity was glorified in all the courts of Europe since the Renaissance and the Greek and Roman remains were collected with passion by the princes and powerful. But with the reign of Louis XIV, this admiration took on a completely different dimension. To impose in the eyes of all the advent of the absolute monarchy and the power of France, the Sun King conceived his palace as a new Rome dedicated to the cult of Apollo, as well as a sanctuary for his prestigious collection of statues, busts, vases, cameos and medals.

A visit to a museum is a wonderful learning opportunity. Unfortunately, we don’t all have local museums, and in-person field trips still fall into the “it’s complicated” category. To bridge the gap, we worked with our friends at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation to explore their incredible digital collection and create this virtual museum scavenger hunt. We think your students are going to love it!
How do I use the virtual museum scavenger hunt?
Simply download the worksheet, print, and copy as many as you need. We recommend having students work in pairs, and you’ll need access to computers, laptops, or tablets. Direct your students to the Henry Ford’s Digital Collections . There are seven categories:
- Agriculture and the Environment
- Communications and Information Technology
- Design and Making
- Social Transformation
- America’s Industrial Revolution
We’ve selected an artifact from each of the seven categories. Students will need to scroll through the collection to find the artifact and answer a question about it. (Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with an answer key.) Encourage them to click around when they see something that interests them!
How can I extend the learning?
This scavenger hunt is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to learning about the innovation process. When students are finished with the scavenger hunt, you can try the following extension activities:
- Find another artifact and write a question for the class to answer.
- Ask students to reflect on what they learned. Possible questions: How do you think each inventor came up with their idea? What problem does each invention solve for people? What characteristics make someone an innovator?
- Explore the particular innovation journey taken by each inventor featured in the scavenger hunt. Think about the habits of innovators and actions of innovation .
