(2 = American; 3 = American; 4 = Brazilian; 5 = Canadian; 6 = French)

1    Oh, my ideal holiday is … you know … relaxing on the beach, swimming. And the kids love playing in the sea, making sand castles, of course!

2    I really like looking around museums, going to cathedrals and that kind of thing. Hopping on a sightseeing bus. You know, just exploring.

3    Oh, it’s the best. Catching the cable car to the top of the mountain and then zooming down with all the fantastic scenery in front of you … You can’t beat it.

4    I need lots of things to do … Fun things, like mountainbike riding – that’s my favourite – or canoeing, and I like horse-riding too. Holidays are for doing exciting things.

5    I love being outdoors, you know, like waking up in a tent and then going fishing all day.

6    It’s great because you just sit on the deck and relax, look out to sea and wait for the world to come to you!

Choosing a holiday

1. Simon and Jenny Carter are booking their summer holiday with a travel agent. Listen and find six mistakes in the booking information form. The first one has been done for you.

b   Vancouver to Lake Louise – 9 hours, Lake Louise to Jasper – 4 hours, Jasper to Calgary – 5 hours

c   Jasper National Park: you can play golf, go hiking and go boating.

Calgary: you can go shopping, and visit museums and Calgary Tower.

(Travel agent = South African)

Travel agent:     Hello. Take a seat. How can I help?

Simon:     We’re thinking of going to Canada, Vancouver and then to Calgary.

Jenny:     Yes, flying to Vancouver on June the 12th.

Travel agent:     OK. How many nights?

Jenny:     Just eight. Coming back on the 20th, from Calgary.

Travel agent:     OK … just a moment … Yes, with Air Canada, that’ll be £780 per person, including all taxes.

Jenny:     Oh, that’s better than we thought!

Simon:     Hmm! We were thinking three nights in Vancouver first. Somewhere rather nice?

Travel agent:     We have a special on at the moment with the Metropolitan. It’s a lovely hotel, four stars … You can see it here. That’s, um … £140 a night.

Jenny:     Per person?

Travel agent:     No, that’s for the room. All these are per room per night, without breakfast.

Simon:     Oh, yes. It certainly looks very nice.

Travel agent:     It is! I stayed there last year. And you should definitely hire a car – it’s only £30 per day for a small car – and drive to Lake Louise.

Jenny:     Oh, yes. We want to go there.

Travel agent:     I recommend you stay at the Emerald Lake Lodge. It’s a perfect place to explore from.

Simon:     That sounds good.

Travel agent:     Let me see … that’ll be £150 per night. It’s worth spending two nights there.

Simon:     Two nights?

Travel agent:     Yes, it’s a nine-hour drive from Vancouver, so two nights is best. And then you can drive to Jasper – that’s four hours. Two nights at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge will be £250 per night. It’s expensive, but it’s well worth going there. A beautiful place.

Simon:     Look, a log cabin!

Travel agent:     Yes. You get your own cabin.

Jenny:     And there’s plenty to do in Jasper National Park, is there?

Travel agent:     Sure. You can play golf, go hiking … and boating if you fancy that. Then you’ve got a five-hour drive to Calgary. A final night somewhere like the Westin will save money – just £74. There’s enough for a day – shopping, museums and Calgary Tower, of course. You can drop your car off at the airport and fly back at ten in the evening.

Simon:     Well, that’s the kind of thing we were thinking of, isn’t it, dear?

Jenny:     Yes, it is. Can you print out those details and we’ll take a brochure?

Assistant 1: Rawlings Insurance. Good morning. Can I help you? Elisabeth: Oh, hello. I’m ringing to report an accident. Assistant 1: A car accident? Elisabeth: Yes. Assistant 1: Just hold the line a moment please. I’m putting you through to our motor insurance department. Assistant 2: Hello? Elisabeth: Hello. Assistant 2: I understand you want to report an accident? Elisabeth: Yes. My car’s been damaged – someone came out in front of me … Assistant 2: Could I just check a few personal details before we go any further? Assistant: Oh yes, sorry. Assistant 2: Your name, first of all. Elisabeth: It’s ELISABETH Ricard. Assistant 2: Is that R–I–K–A–R–D? Elisabeth: It’s spelt with a C not a K. Assistant 2: Oh, OK … And your date of birth please? Elisabeth: It’s the eighth of October, 1975. Assistant 2: … And lastly, I just need to check your address. Elisabeth: Oh, actually I moved house last month so the street name’s different. It’s 60 Forest Road. I think you’ve got 22 Ash Avenue on your records? Assistant 2: I have. So, I’ll just make a note of that … That’s fine … And is that in the same town still? Callington? Elisabeth: That’s right. Assistant 2: Right, now … do you have your insurance policy in front of you? Elisabeth: Yes, I do. Assistant 2: Can you give me the policy number please? It’s at the top. Elisabeth: Oh yes. Five–oh–nine–two–four? Assistant 2: It’s in a box – it should start with letters … Elisabeth: Oh, C-Z- double eight–oh–nine? Assistant 2: That’s the one. And now I want to ask you about the accident itself. Is that OK? Elisabeth: Yes, that’s fine. Assistant 2: First of all, did it happen today? Elisabeth: No, it happened yesterday evening, but by the time I got home it was late, so I didn’t call. Assistant 2: That’s not a problem. So … let’s see … today’s the thirteenth of September, so it happened on the twelfth. Is that right? Elisabeth: It is. Assistant 2: Do you know approximately what time the accident occurred? Elisabeth: Er … oh dear … I wasn’t wearing a watch, and I was a bit shocked. But I’d say it was between 8.15 and 8.45. Assistant 2: That’s OK. I’ll just record that it happened at about 8.30. It doesn’t matter exactly … And I don’t suppose you’ve got any supporting evidence have you? I mean witness statements, that kind of thing? Elisabeth: I don’t have witness statements I’m afraid, but I’ve got a police report. They came and measured up and checked the marks on the road. But unfortunately nobody else was around at the time of the accident. Assistant 2: Any hospital report? Elisabeth: No. Assistant 2: So I take it you don’t have any medical problems then? Any injuries? Elisabeth: Only minor ones. It was mainly the car that got damaged luckily. Assistant 2: Absolutely. But we do recommend that you have a check up anyway. Within twenty-four hours if possible. Elisabeth: Yes, OK. I’ll make an appointment today. Assistant 2: Fine. And now, can you tell me what happened exactly? I’m going to make a few notes. Elisabeth: I was driving home from the swimming pool and … Assistant 2: I don’t know Callington at all, so could you describe it for me? Where did the accident happen? Elisabeth: On the road between New Town and Callington. I was driving from New Town, heading towards Callington, and … Assistant 2: OK, just let me draw the road layout … Right. OK? Elisabeth: When you leave New Town there’s a sharp bend in the road and then there’s a railway bridge. Assistant 2: OK. Elisabeth: And then about half a kilometre further on there’s a crossroads with traffic lights. And I was just in between the two when it happened. I wasn’t going very fast, in fact I definitely … Assistant 2: So you’d already gone over the bridge? Elisabeth: Yes. And I’d passed the park – that’s on the right hand side. And I was just approaching the petrol station … Assistant 2: Where’s that then? Elisabeth: It’s a bit further along, on the opposite side. Assistant 2: So, on your near side then? Elisabeth: Yes. As I was approaching it I saw a blue van coming towards me. The driver had stopped in the middle of the road. Assistant 2: Was he indicating? Elisabeth: Yes. He was waiting to turn into the petrol station. But then at the last minute he decided to turn right in front of me. He must have thought he had enough time, but I had to swerve to avoid him. And I came off the road and landed in a ditch on the opposite side. Assistant 2: Mmm. I don’t suppose he stopped did he? Elisabeth: Oh yes. He came over to see if I was OK, but he tried to say it was my fault. And there wasn’t …

TRAVEL AGENT:   Good morning. World Tours. My name is Jamie. How can I help you?

ANDREA:             Good morning. I want some information on self-drive tours in the USA. Could you send me a brochure?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Of course. Could you I have your name please?

ANDREA:             Andrea Brown . (Example)

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thank you. And your address?

ANDREA:             24, Ardleigh Road. (Q1)

TRAVEL AGENT:   Can you spell that?

ANDREA:             A-R-D-L-E-I-G-H Road.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Postcode?

ANDREA:             BH5 2OP

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thanks. And can I have your phone number?

ANDREA:             Is a mobile alright?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Fine.

ANDREA:             It’s 07786643091.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Thank you. And can I ask you where you heard about World Tours? From a friend? Or did you see an advert somewhere?

ANDREA:             No, I read about you in the newspaper . (Q2)

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK, I’ll get the brochures in the post to you but can I give you some information over the phone. What kinds of things do you want to do on your holiday?

ANDREA:             I’m interested in going to California with my family. I’ve got two children and we want to hire a car.

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK. We have a couple of self-drive tours there visiting different places of interest in California. The first one begins in Los Angeles and there’s plenty of time to visit some of the theme (Q3) parks there.

ANDREA:             That’s something on my children’s list so I’d want to include that.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Good. Then you drive to San Francisco. From San Francisco you can drive to Yosemite Park where you spend a couple of nights. You can choose to stay in a lodge or on the campsite.

ANDREA:             I don’t like the idea of staying in a tent (Q4) . It’d be too hot.

TRAVEL AGENT:   Right. And the tour ends in Las Vegas.

ANDREA:             OK.

TRAVEL AGENT:   The other trip we can arrange is slightly different. It starts in San Francisco. Then you drive south to Cambria.

ANDREA:             Someone told me there’s a really nice castle (Q5) near Cambria. Will we go near that?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Hearst Castle is on that road so you could stop there.

ANDREA:             Good. I’d like to do that. Does this trip also go into the desert?

TRAVEL AGENT:   No, it continues to Santa Monica where most people like to stop and do some shopping.

ANDREA:             We have enough of that at home so that doesn’t interest us.

TRAVEL AGENT:   OK. Well you could go straight on to San Diego.

ANDREA:             That’s good for beaches isn’t it? (Q6)

TRAVEL AGENT:   That’s right, that’s a good place to relax and your children might like to visit the zoo before flying home.

ANDREA:             I don’t think so. We want some time for sunbathing and swimming.

—————————–

ANDREA:             So how many days are the trips and how much do they cost?

TRAVEL AGENT:   The first one I told you about is a self-drive tour through California which lasts twelve days and covers 2,020 (Q7) kilometres. The shortest journey is 206 km and the longest is 632 kilometres. The cost is £525 per person. That includes accommodation, car rental and a flight (Q8) but no meals.

ANDREA:             OK. And the other trip?

TRAVEL AGENT:   That lasts nine days but you spend only three days on the road. You cover about 980 kilometres altogether.

ANDREA:             So is that cheaper then?

TRAVEL AGENT:   Yes, it’s almost a hundred pounds cheaper. It’s £ 429 (Q9) per person, which is a good deal.

ANDREA:             So that covers accommodation and car hire. What about flights?

TRAVEL AGENT:   They aren’t included. But these hotels offer dinner (Q10) in the price.

ANDREA:             OK. Well, thank you very much. I’ll be in touch when I’ve had a chance to look at the brochure.

TRAVEL AGENT:   I’m pleased to help. Goodbye.

ANDREA:             Goodbye.

On behalf of LP Clubs, I’d like to welcome you all here today. My name’s Sandy Fisher and I’m one of the fitness managers here. Before we start our tour of the club I’ll just run through some basic information about the facilities we have here, including recent improvements, and explain the types of membership available.

Our greatest asset is probably our swimming pool which at 25 metres isn’t Olympic-sized, but now we’ve expanded it to eight lanes, it’s much wider (Q11&Q12) . This means there are rarely more than a couple of people at a time in each lane. Unfortunately, there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here but the glass roof on the swimming pool is partly retractable, which means you can enjoy something of the open-air experience on warmer days.

Our recently refurbished fitness suite (Q11&Q12) has all the latest exercise equipment including ten new running machines, and a wide range of weight-training machines. Each member is given full training in how to operate the equipment and there is always a trainer on duty to offer help and advice. Although we do have adult-only times after 6 and at certain times at weekends, children are well catered for. Older children continue to benefit from a wide range of tuition; anything from trampolining to yoga.

——————–

One thing all our members appreciate about us is that we take very good care of them. This starts on day one with your personal assessment. You are asked to fill in a questionnaire giving details of any health problems (Q13) . One of our personal trainers will then go through this with you.

The trainer will then take you through the safety rules (Q14) for using the equipment in the fitness suite. During your next exercise session a personal trainer will work with you to make sure you understand these. It’s very important to do this because we really do want to avoid having any sports injuries. There’s a lot more to looking after yourself than simply lifting weights!

At the end of the personal assessment, the trainer will draw up a plan, outlining what you should try to achieve within a six-week period (Q15) . This will then be reviewed at the end of the six weeks.

Now, I’ll just quickly run through the types of membership we have available. All members must pay a joining fee of £90 (Q16) in addition to the rates for the monthly membership fees. Gold membership entitles you to free entry at all LP Clubs (Q17) . There are now LP clubs in all major cities and towns so if you travel a lot will be a great advantage. Individual gold membership costs £50 a month and joint membership for you and your partner will cost £75.

Premier membership is for professional people whose work commitments make it difficult for them to use the club during the day and so LP gives booking preferences to Premier members at peak times (Q18) . This means you will find it easier to book the sessions at times that suit you. Reciprocal arrangements with other LP Clubs are available to Premier members. Premier membership is for individuals only, but you will be sent passes for guests every month (Q19) . The monthly fee is £65.

You don’t have to have any special clothes or equipment when you visit the club. We provide robes and hairdryers in the changing rooms, but it’s very important to remember your photo card (Q20) because you won’t be able to get in without it.

For people who aren’t working during the day then …

JOHN:                   Erm … hello Professor, I’m John Wishart. I’m working on my entry for the Global Design Competition. My tutor said you might be able to help me with it.

PROFESSOR:       Ah, yes, I got a copy of your drawings. Come in and tell me about it. What sort of competition is it?

JOHN:                   Well, it’s an international design competition and we have to come up with a new design for a typical domestic kitchen appliance . (Q21)

PROFESSOR:       I see, and are there any special conditions? Does it have to save energy for example?

JOHN:                   Actually that was the focus in last year’s competition. This year’s different. We have to adopt an innovative approach to existing technology, using it in a way that hasn’t been thought of before.

PROFESSOR:       I see, that sounds tricky. And what kitchen appliance have you chosen?

JOHN:                   Well, they’re an everyday kitchen appliance in most Australian houses but they’re all pretty boring and almost identical to each other. I think some people will be prepared to pay a little extra for something that looks different . (Q22)

PROFESSOR:       That’s a nice idea. I see you’ve called your design ‘the Rockpool’; why is that?

JOHN:                   Basically because it looks like the rock pools you find on a beach. The top is made of glass so that you can look down into it.

PROFESSOR:       And there’s a stone at the bottom. Is that just for decoration?

JOHN:                   Actually it does have a function. Instead of pushing a button, you turn the stone . (Q23)

PROFESSOR:       So it’s really just a novel way of starting the dishwasher.

JOHN:                   That’s right.

PROFESSOR:       It’s a really nice design, but what makes it innovative?

JOHN:                   Well, I decided to make a dishwasher that uses carbon dioxide.

PROFESSOR:       In place of water and detergent? How will you manage that?

JOHN:                   The idea is to pressurize the carbon dioxide so that it becomes a liquid. The fluid is then released into the dishwasher where it cleans the dishes all by itself.

PROFESSOR:       Sounds like a brilliant idea! Your system will totally do away with the need for strong detergents. So what happens once the dishes are clean?

JOHN:                   Well, to allow them to dry, the liquid carbon dioxide and the waste materials all go to an area called the holding chamber. That’s where the liquid is depressurised and so it reverts to a gas (Q24) . Then the oil and grease are separated out and sent to the waste system.

PROFESSOR:       It sounds like you’ve thought it all out very thoroughly. So, what happens to the carbon dioxide once the process is complete? Not wasted I hope.

JOHN:                   Actually, that’s where the real savings are made. The carbon dioxide is sent back to the cylinder and can be used again and again . (Q25)

PROFESSOR:       What a terrific idea. Do you think it will ever be built?

JOHN:                   Probably not, but that’s OK.

PROFESSOR:       Well, I’m sure a lot of positive things will come out of your design.

——————————-

PROFESSOR:       Now, you seem to have thought about everything so what exactly did you need me to help you with?

JOHN:                   Well, my design has made it to the final stage of the competition and, in a few months’ time. I have to give a presentation, and that’s the part I was hoping you could help me with . (Q26)

PROFESSOR:       Right, well that should be easy enough. What have you managed to do so far?

JOHN:                   Well, I’ve got detailed drawings to show how it will work and I’ve also written a 500-word paper on it.

PROFESSOR:       I see. Well, if you want to stand a good chance of winning you really need a model of the machine . (Q27)

JOHN:                   Yes, I thought I might but I’m having a few problems.

PROFESSOR:       What is the main difficulty so far? Let me guess – is it the materials?

JOHN:                   Yes. I want it to look professional but everything that’s top quality is also very expensive . (Q28)

PROFESSOR:       Look, projects like this are very important to us. They really help lift our profile. So why don’t you talk to the university about a grant? (Q29) I can help you fill out the application forms if you like.

JOHN:                   That would be a great.

PROFESSOR:       You’d better show me this paper you’ve written as well. For a global competition such as this you need to make sure the technical details you’ve given are accurate and thorough . (Q30)

JOHN:                   That would be a great help.

PROFESSOR:       Is there anything else I can do?

JOHN:                   Well, I’m really …

Today we continue our series on ecology and conservation with a look at a particularly endangered member of the black bear family. One in ten black bears is actually born with a white coat, which is the result of a special gene that surfaces in a few (Q31) . Local people have named it ‘the spirit bear’. And according to the legends of these communities, its snowy fur brings with it a special power (Q32) . Because of this, it has always been highly regarded by them – so much that they do not speak of seeing it to anyone else. It is their way of protecting it when strangers visit the area . (Q33)

The white bear’s habitat is quite interesting. The bear’s strong relationship with the old-growth rainforest is a complex one. The white bear relies on the huge centuries-old trees in the forest in many ways. For example, the old-growth trees have extremely long roots that help prevent erosion of the soil along the banks of the many fish streams (Q34) . Keeping these banks intact is important because these streams are home to salmon, which are the bear’s main food source. In return, the bear’s feeding habits nurture the forest. As the bears eat the salmon, they discard the skin and bones in great amounts on the forest floor, which provide vital nutrients. These produce lush vegetation that sustains thousands of other types of life forms, from birds to insects and more.

Today, the spirit bear lives off the coast of the province of British Columbia on a few islands (Q35) . There is great concern for their survival since it is estimated that less than two hundred of these white bears remain. The best way to protect them is to make every effort to preserve the delicate balance of their forest environment – in other words, their ecosystem.

———————–

The greatest threat to the bear’s existence is the loss of its habitat. Over many years, logging companies have stripped the land by cutting down a large number of trees. In addition, they have built roads which have fractured the areas where the bear usually feeds, and many hibernation sites have also been lost (Q36) . The logging of the trees along the streams has damaged the places where the bears fish. To make matters worse, the number of salmon in those streams is declining because there is no legal limit on fishing at the moment . (Q37)

all these influences have a negative impact on the spirit bear’s very existence, which is made all the more fragile by the fact that reproduction among these bears has always been disappointingly low . (Q38)

And so, what’s the situation going forward? Community organizations, environmental groups and the British Columbia government are now working together on the problem. The government is now requiring logging companies to adopt a better logging method (Q39) , which is a positive step. However, these measures alone may not be sufficient to ensure a healthy population of the spirit bear in the future.

Other steps also need to be taken. While it is important to maintain the spirit bear’s habitat, there also needs to be more emphasis on its expansion (Q40) . The move is justified as it will also create space for other bears that are losing their homes …

Trump's hush money trial

Supreme Court hears case about emergency abortion care

By CNN's Tierney Sneed, John Fritze, Hannah Rabinowitz, Jen Christensen and Holmes Lybrand

Key takeaways from today's Supreme Court oral arguments over emergency abortions

From CNN's Tierney Sneed and John Fritze

In this sketch from court, attorney Josh Turney argues during a Supreme Court hearing on the Biden administration’s challenge to aspects of Idaho’s strict abortion ban on Wednesday, April 24, at the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday on whether Idaho’s abortion ban can be enforced in medical emergencies, putting a spotlight on what has been one of the most politically explosive flashpoints in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade’s demise.

Here are key takeaways from today's high-stakes hearing :

US solicitor general tailors her appeal to an abortion-hostile court as "narrow" circumstances of medical emergencies: US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said that there was a real conflict between Idaho’s law and the federal law, known as the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), but she painted it as a narrow one. She stressed that, in this case, the administration is not trying to interfere with Idaho’s overall ability to criminalize abortions outside of certain medical emergencies.

Idaho and its defenders argue that the Biden administration is trying to circumvent the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that let states prohibit abortion, and to rebut that argument, Prelogar described Idaho has an outlier among states that have banned the procedure.

Prelogar’s argument was met with deep skepticism from several of the court’s conservative justices, but others – including Chief Justice John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett– asked probing questions of both sides. The court’s liberal wing, meanwhile, all signaled they would coalesce around the Biden administration.

Idaho attorney struggles with questions from female justices about serious pregnancy complications: Idaho’s attorney Joshua Turner was subjected to a brutal and extended line of questioning from the female justices of the court exploring how the state’s abortion ban plays out in medical emergencies – particularly in dire situations where a woman’s health is at risk but her life is not yet in danger.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked Turner point blank: “What you are saying is that there is no federal law on the book that prohibits any state from saying, even if a woman will die, you can’t perform an abortion?”

Justice Elena Kagan offered a hypothetical in which a woman was about to lose her reproductive organs due to a pregnancy complication. As Turner danced around the “difficult” and “tough” situation her question as posing, she pushed harder: “That would be a good response if federal law did not take a position on what you characterize as a ‘tough question.’”

Keep reading takeaways from the arguments.

Supreme Court justices appear divided on abortion case, with Roberts and Barrett emerging as key votes

From CNN's Tierney Sneed

Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

In a Supreme Court  hearing on the Biden administration’s challenge to aspects of Idaho’s strict abortion ban , US Solicitor General  Elizabeth Prelogar  sought to appeal to conservative justices who just two years ago ruled that states should have the ability to prohibit the procedure.

The dispute, stemming from the Justice Department’s marquee response to the high court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022, turns on whether federal mandates for hospital emergency room care override abortion bans that do not exempt situations where a woman’s health is in danger but her life is not yet threatened.

To prevail, the Biden administration will need the votes of two members of the court’s conservative bloc, and with Justice Brett Kavanaugh signaling sympathies toward Idaho, the case will likely come down to the votes of Chief Justice John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett. The two justices had tough questions for both sides of the case.

The court’s far-right wing, perhaps in an attempt to keep those two justices on their side, framed the case as a federal overreach into state power. The court’s liberals, meanwhile, focused on the grisly details of medical emergencies faced by pregnant woman that were not covered by the limited life-of-the-woman exemption in Idaho’s ban.

Having access to safe abortion is critical for a safe health care system, doctor from rural Idaho says

From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

Dr. Caitlin Gustafson, a family medicine physician from rural Idaho, said having access to safe abortions should be a standard of care in order to have a safe health care system.

Speaking to CNN right outside of the Supreme Court, Gustafson said that she has seen Idaho's health care system "fall apart" since the abortion ban went into effect.

"We have lost a multitude of providers, particularly my OB-GYN colleagues who cannot continue to have themselves in the position of trying to make these decisions in emergencies, where a patient's heath and life threatened," she said, noting that if they make the wrong decision at the wrong moment, they may go to jail or lose their license.

Gustafson said that believes the Supreme Court's decision, based on today's arguments regarding whether Idaho's abortion ban can be enforced in medical emergencies , puts safe emergency health care across the board is at risk.

"This isn't just about abortion, this is about a protection of — a life saving protection we've had in place that keeps any person, including our pregnant patients who come to the emergency room safe," she said.

The federal law is what doctors across the country has "grown up under and it's what keeps everyone safe" she said. Gustafson also noted that she's seen a distinct change in the health care system in Idaho since doctors in the state lost this protection and says it is "untenable."

US solicitor general compares Idaho abortion law to hypothetical ban on epinephrine

From CNN's Holmes Lybrand

US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued today that Idaho’s abortion law is akin to a ban on epinephrine, which treats severe allergic reactions.

Prelogar noted federal law mandates that if a person has an emergency medical condition and goes to an emergency room, “they have to stabilize you."

“Congress did not provide a reticulated list of all possible emergency medical conditions and all possible treatments,” she said. “But it was very clear that Congress set a baseline national standard of care to ensure that no matter where you live in this country you can’t be declined service.”

Of Idaho’s abortion law, Prelogar said: “It would be no different if the state had come out and decided to ban epinephrine."

“I don’t see any way to try to draw lines around to exclude pregnancy complications,” she added.

Supreme Court arguments on historic abortion case have concluded

From CNN's John Fritze

Supreme Court arguments in the historic abortion case have concluded.

Now the justices will begin drafting an opinion – or several. That process usually takes a few months. In this case, the court is expected to hand down its ruling by the end of June.

US solicitor general and Alito go head-to-head

From CNN's Hannah Rabinowitz

In a tense exchange over how federal protections extend to a fetus, US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that women “deserve” medical treatment whenever it is needed.

Prelogar and Conservative Justice Samuel Alito went head-to-head as part of a line of questioning from the justice over whether, in enacting the federal law EMTALA, lawmakers were aiming to give protections to an “unborn child" — a term that is included in multiple provisions of the law.

Prelogar said the law states there is a duty for doctors to act when a pregnant person is “suffering some kind of emergency and her own health isn’t at risk, but the fetus might die,” like in the case of a prolapse of the umbilical cord into the cervix.

“But to suggest that in doing so," Prelogar said, "Congress suggested that the woman herself isn’t an individual, that she doesn’t deserve stabilization — I think that that is an erroneous reading of this."

Alito snapped back: “Nobody’s suggesting that a woman is not an individual and she doesn’t deserve stabilization.”

US solicitor general cites 1800s SCOTUS decision in abortion arguments

US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that the federal government has an interest to “protect its sovereign interest,” noting that “Idaho has directly interfered with the ability of hospitals to accept” federal funds through its abortion law.

Prelogar said several cases address the issue of proprietary interest, citing a case from the late 1800s in which the US Supreme Court unanimously upheld the federal government’s injunction to stop a labor strike related to US railroads.

Prelogar cited the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case, known as In re Debs, during arguments against Idaho’s abortion law.

Justice Neil Gorsuch reacted: “Debs? You really want to rely on Debs, general? I mean that wasn’t exactly our brightest moment."

“I do think though that it reflects the history and tradition of this nation in recognizing that it’s entirely appropriate for the United States to seek to protect its interests in this manner,” Prelogar said.

Alito brings up the "unborn child" debate

People gather during a protest in support of reproductive rights and emergency abortion care on the day the Supreme Court justices hear oral arguments over the legality of Idaho's Republican-backed, near-total abortion ban in medical-emergency situations, in Washington, DC, on April 24.

Conservative Justice Samuel Alito asked US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar to explain why the federal law in question, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), uses the term “unborn child.”

“It’s not an odd phrase when you look at what Congress was doing,” at the time Prelogar said. The law was amended to add the term in 1989.

“There were well publicized cases where women were experiencing conditions their own health and life were not in danger, but the fetus was engraved distress and hospitals weren’t treating them," Prelogar said.

The term is referenced multiple times in law, including in the definition of a medical emergency scenario where the health of an unborn child is in serious jeopardy, where restricting the transfer of a patient in labor would put the safety of the unborn child at risk.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute, an anti-abortion think tank, said in a friend-of-the-court brief that that EMTALA “expressly protects the lives of unborn children” and that it requires hospitals to “to follow the two-patient paradigm to protect both the mother and her unborn child.”

“The United States’ attempt to diminish the ‘unborn child’s’ life as secondary—one that must be protected only if her mother’s health is not threatened but loses all value if her mother’s health is in jeopardy—is atextual,” the brief said. “Congress expected hospitals and physicians to preserve both lives wherever possible.”

After Idaho’s abortion ban, more patients have been transferred out of state for emergency abortion care

From CNN Health's Meg Tirrell, Carma Hassan and Jamie Gumbrecht

If a pregnant woman in Idaho comes to an emergency room facing a grave threat to health but isn’t facing death, doctors have to delay her care until she deteriorates “or they’re airlifting her out of the state so she can get the emergency care that she needs,” US Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said in her argument.

“One hospital system in Idaho says that right now, it's having to transfer pregnant women in medical crisis out of the state about once every other week,” she said.

There has been an uptick in the number of patients transferred for life-saving abortions after Idaho  banned the procedure , according to Dr. Jim Souza, the chief physician executive for Boise-based St. Luke’s Health System.

St. Luke's, Idaho's largest hospital system, wrote in a  friend-of-the-court brief  that the legal uncertainty created by the state's abortion ban means patients with emergency pregnancy complications are more likely to be transferred out of state for care unless they're at "imminent risk of death."

Souza said that in 2023, during an injunction on enforcement of the law as it pertained to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), only one patient in the emergency department was recommended to be transferred out of the state.

“In the short period of time, it’s been just a few months now that Idaho’s law has been in effect, six patients with medical emergencies have already been transferred out of state for termination,” Souza said in a call with reporters last week. “If we annualize that, we can anticipate up to 20 patients needing out-of-state care this year alone.”

Dr. Julie Lyons, a family medicine physician with St. Luke’s Health System, told CNN in February that she counsels patients on their first prenatal visit to "buy life-flight insurance," in case they face a "rare situation that a complication does happen."

Some doctors have also left Idaho as a result of the law, Souza said, creating a “destabilizing effect” on the hospital system.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

How safe is Moscow for tourists?

travel safe listening audio

Moscow is an enormous city. 12 million people live here and many others commute in from the Moscow Region for work each day. And although there is no particular danger for either tourists or locals, it is, as in any big city, always worth using common sense. We'll tell you how to avoid running into trouble and which areas you might want to avoid.

Is the city center safe?

travel safe listening audio

“I was shocked to see people using their laptops in parks in the evening,” says Nicholas Font from Argentina, who visited Moscow in May. “Of course, I was careful with my belongings, but I wasn't afraid of wearing my bag in the city center.”

The city center (and it is a very big city center) is generally convenient and safe for walking around. Pedestrians enjoy wide sidewalks and relatively calm road traffic. There are tourist police (who speak English), not to mention the ordinary police. Of course, there is never any guarantee that you won’t encounter a thief, and so to stay on the safe side keep your documents and money in places that are inaccessible to others. Red Square, Nikolskaya Street and Arbat are the most touristy places, so it’s worth being a little more aware of pickpockets in these areas.

Remember that in Moscow the police can stop you to check your ID. But unless you have committed some kind of crime there is generally nothing to worry about: You just need to show your passport and visa. "I was asked to show my passport and visa three times. Once in St. Petersburg and twice in Moscow," says our reader Ghazali Khan from Dubai. "Police in Russia are polite and professional. Most of them don’t speak English, but they understand your gestures."

Can you walk around at night?

travel safe listening audio

Have you heard the expression "Moscow never sleeps?" Well, this is very true. The city center is buzzing 24 hours a day, and even on the outskirts you are likely to see people out and about even late at night. On a Friday or Saturday night there are likely to be even more people out on the streets than in the daytime. Of course, when it is minus 20 degrees Celsius in the winter, it isn’t as much fun as in the summer, but the only time Moscow really feels deserted is on the morning of Jan. 1 .

According to a recent poll conducted by The Economist , Moscow came in at 37 out of 60 big cities around the world in its Safe City Index. (Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka were at the top of the list). In other words, the Russian capital is pretty much average when it comes to safety.

Is it safe to go to the suburbs?

travel safe listening audio

As a general rule, the police record more crimes in the city center than elsewhere. For instance, 2,846 crimes—mainly robberies and muggings—were recorded in 2018 in the Presnensky District between Arbat and Moscow City.

At the same time, over the past year these numbers have gone down by 20 percent, according to the prosecutor's office.

The city suburbs, with the exceptions of the Maryino and Perovo districts, are generally regarded as quite safe. So if you have a desire to see how ordinary Muscovites live, don't hesitate to hop on the metro and ride out to Vladykino, for example. Just work out your route in advance as you might not run into many people who speak English out there.

What about public transport and taxis?

travel safe listening audio

When Russia hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018, there were many stories of unscrupulous taxi drivers charging tourists astronomical amounts, sometimes as high as a thousand dollars, for a trip from the airport to the center. In order to avoid such unpleasant surprises, avoid airport taxis altogether and instead download Uber or Yandex Taxi on your phone and then pay by card rather than with cash. You will see the cost of the journey at the time of booking, and this won't change when you arrive at your destination. And if you have a strong desire to leave a tip, you can do so online. For your information, the cost of a journey from the airport to the city shouldn’t cost more than $30 (unless you order a luxury car, of course). While you can also find official taxis at the airport, these will be significantly more expensive than ordering one off Yandex Taxi or Uber.

Travelling around the city by metro, bus or trolleybus is generally quite convenient. The Moscow metro is one of the most reliable and safe (not to mention beautiful) underground transport systems in the world. The trains are new and run at short intervals. CCTVs are everywhere in the metro, and there are police at every station. Gabriel Infante Carrillo from Mexico City says that while riding the Moscow metro he had to put his backpack through an X-ray machine, but that the official was very polite with him. "I was not surprised at all, I knew beforehand that this could happen due to security reasons," he said.

Aboveground transport by and large uses specially allocated lanes, and while waiting you can pass the time at "smart" bus stops that have Wi-Fi, electric sockets and an electronic bus schedule in Latin script.

Can young women travel alone in Moscow?

travel safe listening audio

It is generally rare for anyone in Moscow to pester women in the street or catcall them, especially if they see that she is a foreign tourist. Russian men are usually restrained and, even if they like a girl VERY MUCH, it is usually sufficient to politely decline their advances. So Moscow is a perfectly safe city solo women.
