Prince William and Kate Middleton to visit US for 1st time in nearly 10 years

William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales , are coming to the United States for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Prince William and the former Kate Middleton will be traveling to Boston this week, marking their first trip to the U.S. since 2014, and their first trip overseas with their new titles.

The royals are heading to the U.S. for what Kensington Palace staffers are calling their "Super Bowl moment," per People , and culminating in the awards ceremony for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative William founded in 2019 to solve the world's greatest environmental problems.

Here's what we know about their trip

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, William and Kate will be welcomed in Boston at a City Hall ceremony with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Caroline Kennedy, currently the U.S. Ambassador to Australia.

The next day, the pair will tour a nonprofit organization and a startup incubator in the Boston area.

The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony will be Friday's main event, which will be held at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, close to the city's famed Fenway Park.

The ceremony will award five recipients with about $1.2 million grants to help build their solutions to repair the planet by 2030. William has said former President John F. Kennedy's 1962 Moonshot speech and goal of landing a man on the moon within 10 years served as inspiration for the prize.

Billie Eilish, Rami Malek, Daniel Dae Kim and Shailene Woodley will be among the performers and presenters at the ceremony.

The last time William and Kate were in the U.S. was for a three-day trip in New York City. Among the trip's highlights? Shaking hands with Beyoncé and Jay-Z at a Brooklyn Nets game.

NBC Senior International Correspondent Keir Simmons said on TODAY there is "not a chance" William will run into his brother, Prince Harry, while in America.

Earlier this year, the brothers reunited for several events to celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth II , who died on Sept. 8, but have not been seen together since.

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, moved to California in March 2020, and purchased a home near Santa Barbara later that same year.

The couple will be on the East Coast just days after William and Kate, as they are set to receive the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award in New York City on Dec. 6.

Prince William And Kate Middleton's Visit To America: Everything You Need To Know

Will a visit to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s home be on the cards?

The pair arrived on Thursday, November 30 and made their first public appearance at Boston Logan International Airport. The husband and wife coordinated in navy suits, with Middleton in a structured blazer, styled with a turtleneck neck, tapered trousers, a leather belt. suede pumps, and sapphire-and-diamond drop earrings. Prince William, meanwhile, wore his navy suit with a classic white button-down shirt and polka dot tie.

Shortly after touching down in the US - which marks their first overseas trip since the late Queen died, the Prince released a statement paying tribute to his late grandmother, who passed away on September 8, aged 96.

He said: 'Catherine and I are delighted to be back in the United States and are extremely grateful to Governor Baker and The First Lady of Massachusetts for their warm welcome into Boston.

'On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen. She remembered her 1976 bicentennial visit with great fondness.

'My grandmother was one of life's optimists. And so am I. That is why last year we launched the Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.'

Prince William also showed his gratitude for being able to tour Boston during his and Middleton's three-day trip.

'To the people of Boston, thank you. I'm so grateful to you for allowing us to host the second year of the Earthshot prize in your great city. Catherine and I can't wait to meet many of you in the days ahead,' he said.

The Earthshot Prize Awards will recognise five innovators for their work in environmentalism.

Article originally published on 30/11/21: Prince William and Kate Middleton are finally heading to the US, almost two years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved Stateside.

The Duke of Cambridge announced the news in an interview with People in October, noting that his environmental initiative, The Earthshot Prize, will host its second ceremony in the US next year. The Cambridges celebrated the global prize for the environment last Sunday in London.

‘This is just the start,’ he told the publication following the celebrations. ‘I'm thrilled that in 2022, The Earthshot Prize will be heading to the United States, where we will continue to spread this vital message of urgency, optimism and action.

‘The urgency of the situation can't be overstated. But through The Earthshot Prize, I want to show people across the world why there is reason to be hopeful.’

The royal trip will mark the couple’s first in over seven years since their trip to New York in 2014.

It’s unknown at this stage whether the couple will take their three children – Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte – on the trip.

While many royal fans has wondered whether the couple would stay with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during the US visit, royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti recently told US Magazine that it's unlikely. 'It’s like so many of these things — it’s a sort of lose-lose situation,' Sacerdoti claimed. That said, Kensington Palace is yet to comment on the trip, and is yet to release details about the couple's itinerary, so we're not ruling a reunion out.

The news comes after Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie told Entertainment Tonight in September that the foursome's relationship hasn't improved much in recent months.

'The relationship between Harry and William is still very much one of distance,' Scobie said. 'I don't just mean physical [distance], across the Atlantic, but they are not talking that much, and that is exactly how sources close to William have put it.'

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to the US last year after they official stepped down as senior members of the royal family. The pair and their son Archie later settled in Montecito , before they welcomed their daughter Lilibet earlier this summer.

It’s believed no member of the royal family has been able to meet Lilibet – otherwise known as Lili – since her birth as a result of travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last time Prince Harry visited the UK was in April this year following the death of his grandfather, Prince Philip .

Royal Visit: Live Updates as Prince William, Kate Visit Boston

Prince william and kate middleton are in the u.s. to attend friday's earthshot prize awards ceremony, by marc fortier and danica kirka • published november 30, 2022 • updated on december 1, 2022 at 11:05 am.

The first overseas trip by the Prince and Princess of Wales since the death of Queen Elizabeth II began Wednesday, an occasion to show the world as much about who they are not as who they are.

With their three-day visit to Boston , focused on Prince William’s initiative to find the environmental entrepreneurs of a new generation , supplemented with trips to an anti-poverty program, child development researchers and local flood defenses, the couple hope to demonstrate that they aren’t the last remnants of a dying institution. Instead, Americans will see the younger face of a monarchy that is tackling important issues as it seeks to remain relevant in modern, multicultural Britain.

The visit comes less than three months after  the death of Elizabeth , whose personal popularity dampened criticism of the crown during her 70-year reign.

Kate Middleton and Prince William in America! See Highlights from Their Past Visits

The Prince and Princess of Wales are bringing Prince William's Earthshot Prize awards to Boston on Dec. 2 — revisit their previous trips to New York City and Los Angeles!

Prince William and Kate Middleton are bringing the Earthshot Prize to Boston in December 2022, which will be their third trip to America as a couple.

Just a few months after their royal wedding, Kate and Prince William traveled to California after a tour of Canada. They arrived at LAX Airport on July 8, 2011.

The first stop was Variety 's Venture Capital and New Media Summit at The Beverly Hills Hilton hotel. The conference explored how U.K. innovation was on course to rival that of Silicon Valley.

Kate and Prince William also attended a private reception at the British Consul-General's residence as part of their first day in California.

On July 9, the couple stepped out at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, where Prince William took part in a charity match.

Prince William 's team emerged victorious, and Kate proudly posed with the winners and their trophy.

From the polo field to the red carpet! That evening, the royal couple got all dressed up for a BAFTA Reception at the Belasco Theatre.

Kate and Prince William showed off their creative side during a July 10 visit to an inner city arts project for youth in Los Angeles.

No trip to California is complete without a few celebrity encounters, right? Kate met Reese Witherspoon during a reception to mark the launch of Tusk Trust's U.S. Patron's Circle.

The couple ended their California visit by helping to prepare care packages for military children at the the Mission Serve: Hiring Our Heroes event.

Kate and Prince William returned to the U.S. in December 2014, this time for a winter visit to New York City. Kate teamed up with former Mayor Bill de Blasio's wife Chirlane McCray for a visit to the Northside Center for Child Development.

At a conservation reception at British Consul General's Residence, Kate and Prince William met Hillary Clinton as well as her daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

On Dec. 8, the couple enjoyed popcorn at a Brooklyn Nets game, where they had courtside seats.

Ahead of the game, the couple met with LeBron James — and were even gifted with a basketball jersey for their son, Prince George !

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was when Kate and Prince William met JAY-Z and Beyoncé during the game.

On Dec. 9, Prince William and Kate paid a visit to the National September 11 Memorial.

The couple also toured the September 11 Museum, remembering the lives lost during the terrorist attack.

At The Door, which provides services to disadvantaged young people, they watched a performance and joined in on an art class.

Kate and Prince William ended their New York City trip in style, with a dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event was the 600th Anniversary Gala Benefit for the couple's alma mater, the University of St. Andrew's in Scotland.

Bostonians’ Take on the Royals’ Whirlwind Visit? Whatevah.

As breathless online commentary tracked the royal couple’s every move during their visit, swaths of their host city remained unimpressed.

By Jenna Russell

BOSTON — Crowds had gathered at rain-swept City Hall Plaza to welcome Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales, the photogenic royals who touched down on Wednesday for a whirlwind three-day tour.

So were patrons abuzz about the visit two miles away at Santarpio’s, a bare-bones bar and pizza joint, and East Boston institution?

“Not yet,” a bartender said dryly as he hustled crispy pizzas and plates of steaming sausage to a row of diners Wednesday night, his expression suggesting the likelihood of any buzz was quite low.

As breathless online commentary tracked the royal couple’s every movement and designer wardrobe change for a global audience of devoted palace watchers, laconic swaths of their host city remained unimpressed, if not wholly unaware of their presence.

At a Dunkin’ in the diverse Dorchester neighborhood on Thursday, a woman waiting for her order in a puffy winter coat, hood up, declined to talk to a reporter, then asked what the story was about.

Informed of the topic, she curtly shook her head.

“Don’t care,” she said.

The city’s history helps explain its deep veins of indifference, said Brooke Barbier, a historian who also offers guided tours of Boston. Because its identity is so rooted in the American Revolution and its rejection of monarchy, and because its landscape is still littered with vivid reminders of that past, “it makes sense, even centuries later, that Boston can’t care about the monarchy,” she said. “Even if, secretly, they care.”

Commuters cross the site of the Boston Massacre on their way to the subway (the place where it happened, then King Street, was later renamed); at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, actors routinely re-enact the colonists’ famous 1773 protest against British taxation.

Fans of the first-place Boston Celtics seemed to channel vestiges of that feistiness on Wednesday night, when William and Kate attended a game at TD Garden alongside city officials, and were reportedly met with scattered chants of “USA! USA!” amid the louder cheering, when their faces were shown on a giant screen.

Asked after the game about the thrill of playing in front of royalty, the Celtics star Jaylen Brown, a Georgia native, did not hide his disinterest .

“It was just a regular game to me,” he said.

Some Bostonians said they cannot tolerate the royal family because of allegations of racism among some members and associates, including a new report this week of racist comments by Prince William’s godmother.

“I can’t talk about them because I’ll get mad,” said a woman hurrying to catch a train in Dorchester on Thursday, referencing reports that the royal family had mistreated Meghan Markle, William and Kate’s sister-in-law, who is biracial.

At a ceremony welcoming the couple on Wednesday, one city official, the Rev. Mariama White-Hammond, made a point of calling out a “legacy of colonialism and racism” linked to the monarchy.

In true Boston fashion, traffic was also a sticking point, with many locals dreading the prospect of more disruption and delay caused by the royal entourage and security. In neighboring Somerville, where the prince and princess planned to visit an environmental start-up incubator, some took to Twitter to lament the likely impact on their grocery shopping, calling it “a bad day to go to Market Basket,” a reference to the beloved local grocery chain.

Still, many noted with approval the higher purpose for the royal visit. Friday evening, William and Kate celebrated the winners of the Earthshot Prize , the award they created to encourage work addressing climate change. The project was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1960s “moonshot” challenge, which pledged to send Americans to the moon within the decade — a connection that inspired the choice of Boston as the first American city to host the glitzy awards ceremony, held at a venue next to Fenway Park.

Also on Friday, William visited the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Dorchester for a tour and a meeting with President Biden, a part of the prince’s itinerary that won him grudging acknowledgment from some locals.

“They seem to have done their homework, and they’re referencing things that Bostonians care about,” said Ann Walsh, a lifelong Dorchester resident. “I wouldn’t go out of my way to see them, but they are genuinely charming.”

That said, she deemed the visit “not much of an event” and said she would be offended by any excessive show of deference to royalty: “This is America, and I think that’s an important part of who we are, that we don’t deify people.”

At Dorchester’s storied Eire Pub, where news coverage of the royals flashed on TVs above the bar, Johnny Curran, a longtime bartender, said he had heard no chatter about the visit.

“I said to my wife this morning, ‘I put my pants on the same way he does — why is he so special?’” one patron, Kevin Healey, said of the prince.

Pockets of enthusiasm could be found. The Subway sandwich shop on Dorchester’s Morrissey Boulevard, near the JFK museum, was one.

“People are pretty excited,” said Michelle Maduka, an employee who attends school at the nearby Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts.

Excited about the proximity to royalty? Well, no.

“There’s definitely going to be a lot of traffic, and last time when Biden came, some classes were canceled,” Ms. Maduka said.

A co-worker, Daniel Eke, said he would not mind meeting the prince. Mr. Eke was not scheduled to work on Friday, but he had begun to wonder if he should.

“If you could tell me they’re coming here — like, they love Subway and they’re coming to Morrissey Boulevard — then I’m going to pick up Friday,” he said.

Royal troubles cast shadow over William and Kate’s US tour

Carefully scripted trip had to contend with racism row and sympathy for Meghan

The Prince and Princess of Wales returned to Britain on Saturday after a three-day US trip that combined messaging, friendship-politicking and symbolism accented with celebrity name-checks.

But the trip, as carefully scripted as any, may also have missed an opportunity to tackle immediate domestic issues. Eight years ago, William and Kate were greeted by adoring crowds . The crowds were out again this week “but this time around it’s more tempered and more complicated”, says Arianne Chernock, professor of history at Boston University, who has written widely on the role of the British royal family in America.

Those issues – a royal racism row triggered by William’s godmother, Lady Hussey at a Buckingham Palace reception on gender-based violence, and the drop of an ominous Netflix trailer previewing Harry and Meghan’s new reality docuseries, Harry and Meghan – on top of longstanding claims by the Sussexes of racial insensitivity within the palace walls – gave the visit a complex overlay for many Americans.

The New York Times called the Waleses’ visit “A Royal Visit, at a Careful Distance”, and two days later wrote: “Bostonians’ Take on the Royals’ Whirlwind Visit? Whatevah”. The Washington Post headlined the story: “Racism uproar at home threatens to eclipse royal visit to US”. On Saturday, the Boston Globe declared approvingly: “Royals, and Biden, and Beckham – Oh my!” The city, it said, “truly became the hub of the universe”.

The headlines reflected conflicting and often generationally divided interpretations of the royal brand in the US. Some of that could be ascribed to the Sussexes. At the time of the Waleses’ last visit, in 2014, Harry and Meghan hadn’t even met, Chernock notes. “Now we have a new couple who have created an element of surprise and volatility.”

Harry and Meghan have claimed racial insensitivity within the palace walls.

The long history of British royals coming to America, from King George VI’s trip to see FDR in June 1939 – to shore up support as a war with Nazi Germany loomed – to Queen Elizabeth II on horseback with Ronald Reagan, and Princess Diana dancing with John Travolta is typically laden with diplomatic messaging.

Highlights of this trip included Caroline Kennedy, now US ambassador to Australia, acting as William’s guide – an endorsement in act and spirit from a complicated family closest to being considered US royalty – at the JFK library on Friday. Later, the Waleses arrived at an Earthshot environmental initiative award ceremony in an electric car, the princess in a $100 green dress and hand-me-down necklace. Earlier, President Biden had welcomed the couple, and shared, according to a spokesperson, “warm memories of Her Majesty”.

The complications of this visit, Chernock says, “are not what William and Kate are doing – it’s everything that’s happening around them that makes it harder to move through these pre-determined roles and schedules and requires a new degree of savvy and humility that perhaps the royal family is not accustomed to”.

Still, Chernock said, the couple “have been received with great enthusiasm because they have demonstrated just how serious they are about a number of issues that really resonate with multiple publics”.

While a spokesperson for the Prince of Wales stated that Hussey’s comments were unacceptable and that “racism has no place in our society”, the latest racially tinged blow-up called for the Waleses to address it directly, Chernock says.

“Obviously, William and Kate did not make the remarks but they can’t just brush it under the rug because it’s not a one-off. There’s a desire on the part of Americans for more candour, a more robust response – and to show willingness to lead on issues of racial justice that keep coming up.”

after newsletter promotion

But that could just as easily be turned into an opportunity for the couple to “demonstrate they are going to take a stronger stand on these issues and set a new tone”. Without the couple seeking to put down markers of a generational divide, they’d be “continuing a pattern where silence means something and that becomes equated with complicity”.

Despite the increasingly public spat between the Waleses and Sussexes, conducted(as their parents had done) through royal “sources” as well as the release of the Netflix trailer, the values that the two couples champion – environmental and racial justice – are closely intertwined. “William and Kate’s agenda doesn’t need to be at odds with Harry and Meghan’s. In fact they’re very much aligned,” says Chernock. But with the Sussexes staked out in California, they are “an additional dimension the Waleses need to be aware of, but not actively manage, when they come to America”.

The pride that many in the US felt that an American woman was marrying into the British royal family is now tinged with a sense of protectiveness that Meghan had been wronged. “That lends to a sense of wariness about others in the family,” Chernock said.

Still, she added, the resonances of last week’s visit were fascinating. “It’s unfortunate that the more the press forwards the narrative of a war, the more they’re doing a disservice to the royal family but also to the issues that are of global import.”

The royal family has been visiting the United States for over 80 years now, touching lives in states across the nation along the way. While official tours—and even impromptu visits—come with a range of important duties, they typically also allow for public-facing moments of downtime and celebrity-studded fun. From King George VI and the future Queen Mother's very first hot dog to Prince Charles's date with Tricia Nixon, these photos show just how many memories have been made in the United States. With Prince William visiting in New York City this week for the Earthshot Prize Summit, there's no better time to look back at the best royal visits to the U.S. throughout history.

Prince Charles, his wife and a wardrobe full of dresses jet off to the United States Tuesday on a tour designed to celebrate trans-Atlantic ties, promote Charles’ environmentalist causes — and test reaction to his new bride in a nation still smitten with the late Princess Diana.

“This is Diana country,” said Lisa Stewart, a member of a band of devotees called the Diana Circle U.S. “We love Diana still.”

The 56-year-old heir to the throne and Camilla, duchess of Cornwall, will visit New York, Washington, New Orleans and San Francisco during the one-week tour, their first official overseas jaunt since marrying in April.

The royal couple will unveil a memorial to victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in Manhattan, dine at the White House with President Bush and his wife, Laura, and meet aid workers and residents on a flying visit to hurricane-hit New Orleans.

Visits to farms, markets, schools and museums will give Charles a chance to highlight issues close to his heart — organic food production, the environment, education and classical architecture.

Memories of ‘Diana territory’ Aides hope the prince’s first official tour of the United States since 1994 won’t be eclipsed by memories of a visit in 1985 — when a radiant Diana danced with John Travolta at a White House dinner.

“For a long time the (British) media has regarded the States as Diana territory,” said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine. “But there’s nothing to suggest Camilla won’t get a warm welcome.”

The prince’s office says the trip is intended to recognize “the importance of the relationship between the two countries and their common bonds and shared traditions.”

It is also part of a careful palace plan to win acceptance for the duchess, long reviled in the British press — and among Diana-philes — as the woman who broke up the royal romance. “There were three of us in that marriage,” Diana told a television reporter in 1995.

Charles and Diana divorced in 1996; Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris the following year.

Attitudes changing Since then, a careful series of joint milestones has helped soften public attitudes toward the prince and Camilla, whose relationship began more than 30 years ago, before either was married.

The couple’s first public appearance together was in 1999; the first public kiss in 2001. In April they married in a civil ceremony. A poll at the time suggested almost two-thirds of Britons supported the marriage.

In deference to Diana, Camilla did not take the title princess of Wales, and she has made it clear she wishes to be known as princess consort, not queen, when Charles takes the throne — although experts say she will, officially, be queen.

The 58-year-old duchess has discarded a sometimes frumpy country style for designer dresses and extravagant hats since stepping into the limelight.

Questions on wardrobe, entourage British newspaper reports said that she was taking 50 dresses on the tour and that 40 staff members would accompany the couple. But Charles’ office said the true size of the entourage was 16, and stressed the duchess’ clothes were paid for from his private income. Officials would not say how many dresses Camilla was taking.

The tour begins Tuesday with a visit to the World Trade Center site in New York, where the couple will dedicate a memorial garden to British victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. There is also a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and a reception.

In Washington, the couple will have lunch and dinner with the Bushes at the White House.

Charles’ office would not say whether the prince planned to raise the issue of climate change, which he recently called “the greatest challenge to face man.” Bush’s refusal to sign the Kyoto accord on greenhouse gas emissions has angered many environmentalists.

Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

You don’t have to travel to Europe to see turrets, gate houses and other architectural features reminiscent of the Middle Ages

Jennifer Nalewicki

Travel Correspondent

Hearst Castle.jpg

You don’t have to be royalty to visit a castle. Here in the United States numerous castles are open for exploration, and while they may not date back to Medieval times, their elaborate architectural characteristics—turrets, moats, gate houses, drawbridges and other features commonly associated with castles found in England and elsewhere in Europe—are equally impressive. One even has a fire-breathing dragon!

Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California

Hearst

From 1919 to 1947, William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan built a castle fit for a king—or in this case, a publishing magnate. Located on 250,000 acres of land equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles, the idea for Hearst Castle began as a “modest dwelling” but eventually grew to a multi-million-dollar project that included multiple buildings, including Casa Grande, a palatial home featuring 38 bedrooms, 42, bathrooms and 14 sitting rooms. But perhaps the most iconic parts of the property are the two swimming pools . The first, Neptune Pool, stretches 104 feet in length and holds 345,000 gallons of water while the indoor Roman Pool features intricate mosaics inspired by ancient Roman baths. The castle now hosts a variety of themed tours, including evening tours where visitors an experience the property during twilight.

Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina

Biltmore

It’s easy to see why this is considered one of the most iconic estates in the United States. With a square footage measuring more than 178,000 square feet, the Biltmore Estate is considered the largest privately owned home in the United States. Construction of the sprawling chateau was completed in 1895 for then-owner George Washington Vanderbilt II, a successful art collector and an heir to the prominent Vanderbilt family. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, the finished estate contains 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces, as well as prominently appointed turrets and pitched roofs, two features common in French Renaissance architecture, which Hunt looked to for inspiration. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead designed the property’s collection of gardens (you may recognize his name as the designer of New York City’s Central Park and Prospect Park). More than a century later, the estate is still abuzz with activity and hosts a calendar of events that includes self-guided and audio tours, carriage rides around the property, exhibitions (currently on view is “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition”), wine tastings at the onsite winery and more.

Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Hawaii

Iolani

Long before Hawaii became the 50th state, it was ruled by King Kalakaua and later his sister, Queen Lili'uokalani , and Iolani Palace served as the monarchy’s home base. Completed in 1879, the 37,100-square-foot palace is noteworthy for its unique style of architecture, known as American Florentine , and considered the only example of its kind in the world, combining the square symmetric style of Italian Renaissance architecture popular in Italy with Hawaiian touches, including the incorporation of local koa wood in the construction. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, the sprawling property served as a government building for some 80 years. Then, beginning in the 1970s, Iolani Palace was restored to its royal glory, with looted furnishings from Queen Lili'uokalani's era returning to their rightful place in recent years. Now a National Historic Landmark and a museum, the palace offers both guided and self-led audio tours, including visits to the Imprisonment Room, where Queen Lili'uokalani served an eight-month imprisonment for allegedly having “knowledge of a counterrevolutionary attempt” during her reign, and the Throne Room, a gold-and-crimson-adorned room that showcases the monarchy’s two thrones.

Bishop Castle, Rye, Colorado

Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

When Jim Bishop began building a summer cottage in 1969, on a two-and-a-half acre plot of forested land he purchased ten years earlier at the age of 15, little did he know he would wind up building a castle. With the help of his father, Willard, the pair gathered nearby rocks and, without using a single blueprint, set out to create a stone cottage of epic proportions. By 1995, the massive structure towered 165 feet in height, nearly as tall as a 16-story building. Today, the stone castle draws crowds from around the world to marvel at the creation. Bishop’s creativity can be seen throughout the property. How many castles have a fire-breathing dragon hovering 80 feet in the air constructed of repurposed stainless-steel warming plates, after all? Despite a number of setbacks, including a cancer diagnosis several years back, Bishop, now in his 70s, continues to greet visitors to Bishop Castle looking to explore its stained-glass ballroom and scale the castle’s spiraling staircase to reach the top of a turret that offers sweeping views in every direction far above the tree line.

Smithsonian Castle, Washington, D.C.

Six Castles You Can Visit in the United States

A number of iconic buildings border the National Mall, but one sticks out from the rest. Completed in 1855, the Smithsonian Institution Building (often called the Castle) serves as home base for the Smithsonian Institution and houses its information center. The Castle—constructed in the Norman style of architecture popular in the 12th century using red sandstone quarried from Seneca Creek, Maryland— is the work of architect James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. Renwick's original cardboard model of the Castle is on display inside the building. Visitors can also pay their respects to James Smithson , the British scientist who bequeathed his estate to the United States for the establishment of an institution dedicated to "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," at his crypt near the Castle's north entrance.

Bannerman Castle, Beacon, New York

Bannerman

As a successful munitions dealer, businessman Francis Bannerman VI needed adequate space to store the bounty of equipment used during the Spanish-American War of 1898 that he had purchased at military auctions. During a canoeing trip in 1900, he happened upon just the spot to store his vast collection: Pollepol Island. Located roughly 60 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River, the island’s seclusion and distance from the city made it an appealing location for a storage facility to house cannons, boxes of gun powder, uniforms, scrap metal and other military paraphernalia. However, while much of the building did reach completion, construction of Bannerman Castle was abandoned upon Bannerman’s death in 1918. An explosion in 1920 destroyed the island’s powder house, leaving behind structural damage to the castle that can still be seen today. Over time, much of the remaining structure has crumbled due to the passage of time and weather, but the castle’s side wall still proudly proclaims “Bannerman’s Island Arsenal.” Kayak and guided walking tours of the island remain popular activities for city dwellers looking for an urban escape.

The first member of the British royal family to visit the United States, King Edward VII, son of Queen Victoria, came to Mount Vernon on October 5, 1860 when he was still known as Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.

The welcoming party included U.S. President Buchanan, U.S. Supreme Court judges, and members of the U.S. Congress. During his visit, the Prince consented to plant a small buckeye tree in front of Washington’s Tomb  in commemoration of the historic visit.

The son of Queen Victoria, Prince Arthur (later known as the Duke of Connaught) arrived on the estate in 1869, four years after the conclusion of the American Civil War.

The next British royal to travel to Mount Vernon was Princess Aribert (Princess Marie Louise of Schleweswig-Holstein), a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, in 1900. She was accompanied by the U.S. Secretary of State, John Hay.

According to Colonel Harrison Howell Dodge, the Director of Mount Vernon from 1885-1937, Princess Aribert “expressed much interest and pleasure in her visit and commented most favorably on the beauty of the place, saying that America owed a great debt to the devoted Ladies who had preserved this historic spot to their country." Following the royal visit of 1900, Prince Louis of Battenberg (Louis Alexander Mountbatten, 1 st Marquess of Milford Haven), the grandfather of His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, visited Mount Vernon in 1905.

After the First World War, while he was still known as the Prince of Wales, King Edward VIII (later known as the Duke of Windsor) arrived at Mount Vernon by automobile on November 13, 1919, accompanied by U.S. Vice President Marshall. Following the tradition introduced by King Edward VII, the Prince planted a small English yew tree near Washington’s Tomb .

On the eve of the Second World War, King George VI, brother of King Edward VIII and father of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was a guest at Mount Vernon on a sweltering summer’s day on June 9, 1939. Arriving on President Franklin Roosevelt’s yacht, the King and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, were accompanied by the President and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, members of the President’s Cabinet and their wives, officials of the British Embassy, as well as other noted guests. As they disembarked, they were greeted by the Regent of Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Mrs. Horace Mann Towner and the director of Mount Vernon, Charles Cecil Wall, as well as twenty-four Vice Regents, or board members, of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. The King was presented with a set of The Diaries of George Washington , which “was received with special gratitude and appreciation." (2)

Harry and Meghan's visit has no affiliation with Britain's royal family , and is instead at the invitation of the country's Chief of Defense Staff, its highest-ranking military official.

Their three-day visit will have the couple interacting with not only military officials but also locals, including women leaders and servicemen and women.

On Friday, Harry and Meghan visited a school in the capital city of Abuja together, kicking off an inaugural mental health summit run by a local nonprofit, GEANCO, which is affiliated with their Archewell Foundation. The couple was serenaded with cheers and dancing by the children.

Harry spoke to the students and teachers about why it's important to break the stigma around mental health and acknowledge how you feel.

"Every single person in this room, the youngest, the oldest, every single person has mental health. So therefore, you have to look after yourself to be able to look after other people. And other people have to be able to look after themselves, to look after you. That's the way it works. And there is no shame to be able to acknowledge that today is a bad day, OK?" Harry told the crowd.

He added, "[If] you woke up this morning feeling sad, and you left school feeling stressed, and you've lost a loved one in your family, and you don't know who you talk to or who to speak to -- all of these things you may be led to believe are not for conversation, we are here today to tell you that that is not the case. Every single one of those things is completely normal. It is a human reaction, whether it's grief, stress, whatever the feeling is, it comes from an experience that you have had. You can have it. She can have it. I can have it. They can have it. Every single one of us is likely to have that on any given day. So, if you take anything away from today, just know that mental health affects every single person in the entire world."

While visiting a kindergarten class, the children had the couple on their feet again for a joyous game of "jump up, turn around."

Harry asked a student, "Is singing and dancing your favorite class?"

Meghan added that their daughter Lili, who is about to turn 3, also loves "all the jumping around."

They also visited a STEM class where students shared robot cars they'd built, and Meghan revealed her son Archie, now 5, liked construction too.

The couple were gifted a traditional wooden mask and books about Nigerian heritage.

What else to expect from Harry and Meghan's trip

Harry will also meet with injured service members at a local military hospital during the trip, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to ABC News, and the couple plan to meet with the Chief of Defense Staff.

On Saturday, the couple plan to attend a training session for Nigeria: Unconquered, a nonprofit organization that is affiliated with the Invictus Games , a Paralympic-style competition for wounded service members that Harry founded in 2014.

Meghan is also scheduled to co-host an event on women in leadership with the director general of the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, their final day in Nigeria, Harry and Meghan will attend a basketball clinic and a "cultural reception," according to their spokesperson.

The couple will also attend a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Couple drew big crowds on royal tours before exit

On previous official visits as working royals, Harry and Meghan were known to draw large crowds and bring global attention to the countries they visited.

In late 2019, Harry and Meghan traveled to South Africa for what would be their last major overseas royal tour. There, they shone in public events interacting with locals, but also spoke candidly about the struggles they faced as newlyweds and new parents under the glare of the public spotlight.

Prince Harry steps out solo in London while King Charles III attends Buckingham Palace garden party

"It's hard," Meghan told ITV anchor Tom Bradby for the documentary, "Harry & Meghan: An African Journey." "I don't think anybody could understand that."

Just months later, in January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced to the world that they planned to "step back" from their duties as senior members of Britain's royal family.

Shortly after that announcement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the Sussexes would no longer be "working members" of the royal family.

Since then, the couple has settled in California with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, and become financially independent, taking on new roles in the entertainment and philanthropy worlds.

Harry and Meghan have returned together to the United Kingdom since their departure less than a handful of times, most recently attending the funeral for the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Meghan Markle says she 'loves being a mum' as she opens up about 'chatty' Archie and Lili

The duke and duchess of sussex are promoting the invictus games on their whirlwind tour.

Ainhoa Barcelona

The Duchess of Sussex  has said how much she 'loves being a mum' as she opens up about 'chatty' children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet on day two of her whirlwind mini tour in Nigeria.

Meghan made the sweetest comment about her children on Saturday afternoon as she co-hosted an event of Women in Leadership with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The event aimed to highlight the importance of female leadership and empowerment in driving positive change globally.

Looking radiant in a red summer dress , Meghan was comfortable on stage as she took part in the address with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The mum juggle

When the conversation turned to how women juggle motherhood with their careers, and the Duchess was asked for advice, she sweetly said: "I love being a mum, I love being a mum."

She then recalled: "When I was on season one of  Suits , so that was a long time ago. Now I know the show is having a resurgence, but that was a long time ago. Let's say maybe a decade ago."

"And Bonnie Hammer, who runs NBCUniversal, was a huge mentor, remains a huge mentor to me. And I remember having the good fortune at the time that she invited me to have breakfast and I thought this was just the biggest deal in the world," she continued.

"And I asked her that exact question. I said, 'How do you find the balance?' And she said, 'You don't, you'll never find the balance.' "

Meghan smiled: "And this was before I was married, before I had children, before all the things in my life have certainly had a plot twist.

"And it struck me and it stayed with me for a long time because you say, 'Well how can you be so successful? And she's a mother as well and she's married and say that you'll never find the balance? What does life feel like if it's imbalanced?'"

Meghan said: "What I think that to mean now is that that balance will always change for you. That balance, what seems balanced ten years ago is going to shift.

" And so being a mum has always been a dream of mine. And I'm so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty sweet children. "

Proud to be Nigerian

During the Q&A, Meghan was also asked how she felt about being Nigerian: "Well, firstly, thank you all so much for being here. I am just flattered and honoured and inspired.

"It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived, and I very quickly got the memo than I need to wear more colour so I can fit in with all of you in your incredible fashion. I am very overwhelmed. So I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you've all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country, my country."

She added her first thing she did when she found out her heritage was "call my mum, because I wanted to know if she had any awareness of it".

"It was exciting for both of us to discover more and understand what that really means," she said.

Meghan added: "And every single moment that I hear anyone so far talk about what it means to be a Nigerian woman, it is the most flattering thing to be in that company, to be in your company."

Lavish lunch in Abuja

Earlier in the day, Meghan and her husband Prince Harry attended a special lunch for military families with the country's chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The Duchess, 42, amped up the glamour in a St Agni white maxi dress paired with heeled sandals. She teamed the bridal look with a delicate gold necklace and matching earrings, while her hair was beautifully styled in a face-framing updo.

Harry, meanwhile, matched his wife in a white suit.

The couple were guests of honour at the Sit Out event, seated at chairs that had "Duke" and "Duchess" labels printed on the backs.

After being seated, the British and Nigerian national anthems played. Harry stood eyes front with his arms by his side as God Save The King rang out.

The royals were also treated to lively performances which they appeared to thoroughly enjoy as they faced a stage decked out with red, white, and blue balloons.

A highlight was the dancers performing an impressive human pyramid, with the top, lightest dancer leaping down and doing a back flip in front of them.

Heartfelt speeches

The couple also heard from some of the wounded military personnel, including Lance Corporal Peacemaker Azuegbulam, 27, who uses a prosthetic and told the reception he is planning to go to the Vancouver Invictus Games to take part in alpine skiing and skeleton sliding.

He thanked Harry for launching the Games all those ten years ago.

During the series of addresses, Abike Dabiri Erewa, chairwoman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, brought applause from the room when she exclaimed: "Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!"

Referencing Meghan's revelation on her podcast that she is half Nigerian, the chairwoman said: "I was excited but not surprised. Because she is beautiful, intelligent, diligent and hardworking and she stands firm in the midst of challenges.

"Prince Harry you married the best — our daughter, our friend Princess Meghan. I hope you come back again, again and again."

Addressing the Duchess, she then said: "Princess Meghan, you married the best man. He is handsome and gorgeous and the best man."

She then presented the couple with gifts of a his and hers traditional Aso-Oke outfit.

Harry's moment on stage

Harry also had his moment under the spotlight as he gave a speech, addressing his fellow diners and the Chief of Defence Staff and the Defence Minister.

"Your reception and energy have nothing but been remarkable," he said.

He talked about the last decade of his Invictus Games and "some significant moments that stand out in my mind" including when Team Nigeria "danced on stage better than anyone else" at last year's tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Invictus Games sporting event

Earlier in the day, Harry and Meghan attended an event linked to the Invictus Games – a training session for organisation Nigeria: Unconquered at the Defence Headquarters Officers' Mess in Asokoro, Abuja – where the couple were invited to watch a sitting volleyball game.

After about 15 minutes, the sporty Duke was invited to take part. As spectators shouted "Team Harry" and Meghan clapped animatedly for her husband, she also got chatting to one little girl, nine-year-old Tiwa Akanbi.

Tiwa later said of her meeting with the Duchess: " She said Prince Harry loves to play volleyball and that he's very good at it.  And she asked me if I play volleyball in my school. And I said yes."

Her mother Desola, 47, added: "She's always wanted to meet her. She said last night, 'When am I going to meet 'Auntie Meghan?'"

Before leaving, Royalty Ojeh, six, the daughter of the executive director of Nigeria: Unconquered, presented Meghan with a bouquet of roses.

The mother-of-two removed one of the roses from the posy and handed it back to Royalty, who said of the Duchess: "She was nice."

Nigeria's connection with the Invictus Games

Nigeria participated in the Invictus Games for the first time in September 2023, attending the tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany. It was there that Harry and Meghan met the country's chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, who invited them to visit Nigeria.

At the Invictus Games last year, Harry and Meghan met athletes from the Nigerian team and fans. The Duchess was also given a Nigerian name , Amira Ngozi Lolo. Amira is a warrior princess from a legend, Ngozi means 'blessed' and Lolo is 'royal wife'.

LISTEN: Why Archie and Lilibet have not joined Harry and Meghan in Nigeria

In 2022, Meghan revealed on her former podcast, Archetypes , that she has Nigerian heritage. She told celebrity interviewer Ziwe: "I just had my genealogy done a couple years ago… [and I'm] Forty-three percent Nigerian."

Beyoncé raises – and clears – her own ambitious bar at Renaissance tour US opener

royal tour of usa

PHILADELPHIA – Two  Beyoncé s come to play on her Renaissance World Tour .

There is the understated Beyoncé  of the opening segment, her creme brulee -colored hair blowing delicately as she vocalizes intently through “Dangerously in Love,” sits elegantly atop a sliver baby grand piano for “1+1” and thanks the crowd for their loyalty (“You are the reason I’m standing on this stage”).

Then there is the Beyoncé of the other five segments of the show, with themes such as “Renaissance,” “Opulence” and “Motherboard.”

This Beyoncé is an unstoppable force of precise movement and vocal dynamics, a superstar who, two months shy of turning 42 and in the where-did-the-time-go third decade of her career, has raised – and cleared – her own ambitious bar yet again.

At Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field Wednesday, Beyoncé finally unveiled her colossal, eye-popping production in the U.S. She’s already played for a million-plus fans since launching the world tour in Sweden in May, allowing her time to perfect every second of this polished, 2 ½-hour spectacle that will play nearly two dozen stadiums through October.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Though a tiny, taut figure on a stage designed with ramps, staircases and catwalks, Beyoncé loomed magnificently on a video screen wall, her doe-eyed beauty and trademark snarls amplified to reach the farthest cranny of the venue.

Bombarded with bras : Drake attracted much attention from fans at his Detroit tour stop

The dazzling concept videos that ushered in each changeover – particularly, the futuristic visual feast that created a Bey-bot for the “Renaissance” segment – captivated, never feeling like costume-change filler or a glitzy stall tactic.

Of course, there is no stalling in Beyoncé’s universe . The blizzard of beats powering “I’m That Girl” and “Cozy” was complemented by rigidly snapped elbows, severe shoulder shrugs and cocked hips by Beyoncé and her cadre of 10 female dancers.

Her ode to house music, punctuated by “Cuff It” and “Break My Soul” – standout tracks from last summer’s “Renaissance” album – pulsed accordingly, with lights attacking from every angle of the stadium.

Clad in a Barbie-pink gown with more slits than material, Beyoncé radiated glam-infused confidence. When her sunglasses slid down her nose one too many times, they were brusquely tossed offstage. No errant eyewear will impede her rhythm.

A hearty rump shake at the start of “Break My Soul” sent the sold-out crowd into spasms, but it was the midsong interpolation of Madonna’s “Vogue” that further encouraged their glee as Beyoncé name-checked Lizzo, Nina Simone, Solange Knowles and Jilly From Philly in her recitation.

By now, the Beyhive knew to expect an appearance by Blue Ivy, the 11-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter), who started joining the team on stage in Europe. But even with advanced knowledge, the crowd erupted when the preteen arrived during “My Power,” leading the dance crew down a ramp while Mom followed atop a glistening tank-like vehicle.

Blue Ivy ably kept pace with the fleet feet around her, ending “Black Parade” with her fist in the air. As the audience showered the young Carter with more whoops of appreciation, Beyoncé’s game face melted into a proud smile, leading to one of the most memorable snapshots of the night.

The tour set list draws heavily from “Renaissance” as expected, but Beyoncé sprinkles in hits – though maybe not enough for some fans – from her robust catalog, including “Naughty Girl” and “Formation.”

A musical highlight landed with the double punch of classics “Love on Top” and “Crazy In Love.” With her male dancers lined up behind mic stands, Beyoncé humorously led the crowd through the escalating key changes in “Love on Top” before the delectable groove of the song dovetailed into the snaky bass line of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” complete with throwback choreography.

It was a moment of unadulterated joy that remained through the sizzle of “Crazy in Love,” which included a fabulous coda by her hardworking band.

The tempo of the show decelerated a bit as Beyoncé entered the homestretch in her already-famous Loewe bodysuit designed with strategically placed handprints. “Plastic Off the Sofa” and “Virgo’s Groove” didn’t have the audience as adrenalized as intensely as other selections from “Renaissance.” But by the time she reemerged for the encore sporting a yellow-and-black headdress and offering a powerful missive with “America Has a Problem,” attentions were rapt again.

Soaring balladeer and poetic messenger. Refined couture and sequined camouflage. Warm smiles and dramatic sneers.

Beyoncé delivers all of it, with excellence.
