We spent a very pleasant week on your Arosa Stella. The buffet was very extensive and tasty. However, we would have preferred the French cuisine in France. Lyon is considered the "culinary capital of France" – quite a compliment in a country famed for its cuisine and fine vintages. You'll discover why during a tasting at the famous Les Halles de Lyon, the celebrated indoor food market that's been a fixture in Lyon since 1850. It offers an unbelievable array of breads, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, sausages, wines, chocolates... the list goes on. Everything is fresh and delicious, and it's said that the best chefs in Lyon shop here… so enjoy!

Truffle hunting in the Rhône Valley

Trained dogs and "black diamonds" – truffles – in grignan along the rhône.

The Italians call them tartufo, but to the French and much of the rest of the world, they're known as truffles. But whatever you call it, this rare, pungent (and highly perishable) fungus that grows under the ground in certain parts of Europe is one of the most expensive foods on Earth, highly prized by chefs and gourmets around the globe. Centuries ago, early truffle-hunters used pigs, with their keen sense of smell, to root these treasures out of the ground… but the piggies usually ate the truffles as soon as they found them! So they began training dogs to sniff them out... like the pooches you'll meet and go truffle-hunting with today at a truffle farm in Grignan… followed by a tasting of products made with this precious ingredient.

In springtime, the famous villa and gardens in the village of Giverny is awash in pink and green, adorned in wisteria, azalea and water lilies, and basked in dappled sunlight reminiscent of the works of its 43-year resident, painter Claude Monet. Our exclusive early-opening visit to the pioneer Impressionist's retreat shows you the artist's home as he lived it and painted it. Monet's pink stucco house gives the impression that his family of 10 still lives there; its rooms showcase private furnishings, and his collection of Japanese prints adorn walls throughout. Walk along pathways bordered with nasturtiums, hollyhocks, hybrid lilies or snapdragons, and go through the tunnel that leads to the Water Garden and the Japanese Bridge.

When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

“Kir Royale is all about experiencing Champagne in its home terroir and celebrating everything that its vineyards have to offer,” said James Newcombe, cofounder of French Waterways, in a statement. “Aside from enjoying the bubbles, Champagne’s countryside is magnificent, blanketed with rolling vineyards and dotted with ornate châteaux and churches.” 

The third day kicks off with an excursion to the World War l battlefield at Château-Thierry and the Belleau Wood memorial. After, you’ll enjoy lunch and dinner back onboard until Kir Royale reaches its mooring at Damery. The next morning, head off on a private Champagne tasting and tour at the boutique Grand Cru winery of Frerejean Frères, followed by lunch in the salon. When the boat arrives in Dizy, your group will visit the world-renowned Moët & Chandon. The festivities continue with guided tours of Moët & Chandon’s underground cellars and a tasting hosted by a cellar master. On the final day, you’ll pay a visit to the historic, 800-year-old Reims Cathedral. 

The week-long itinerary through France’s Champagne region starts from $8,550 per person for by-cabin bookings. Kir Royale can also be chartered with prices starting from $58,700 for up to six guests. The rate includes transfers to and from Paris, all meals and wine (onboard and ashore), daily tours, and a dedicated crew.

F or many, food is the best part of travel—and I can relate. I've taken cruises all over the world, and they've led to many culinary firsts for me: My first-ever lobster was on a Caribbean cruise when I was just a teenager, my first bite of reindeer came in a cozy bowl of chili during an Alaskan cruise, and my first (and last!) time eating escargot happened on a cruise in the Mediterranean. While these dishes were all parts of the all-inclusive menus on my cruises, I decided to kick things up a notch on the foodie scale by hopping on board the growing trend of special culinary cruises, which feature food and wine in a variety of special ways. These days, you’ll find the best cruises partnering with celebrity chefs, featuring specialty-dining venues and offering excursions filled with meals you’ll dream about long after you return home.

"I helped start the first culinary-themed cruises in the early '90s when I began noticing interest, and today this concept is more popular than ever," says Executive Chef Rudi Sodamin, head of culinary arts on Princess Cruises and Master Chef for the Holland America Line. "Experiential food and beverage experiences are often some of our most popular activities on board. It is my goal to surprise and delight guests while also educating them and meeting their every gastronomical desire."

Best for Napa Valley wine pairings

Princess 7-day pacific wine country cruise.

If you love Napa by land , you'll love it even more by sea, and it's now an experience you can have on any Princess Cruises ship sailing North American itineraries. In spring 2023, the cruise line partnered with Wagner Family Vineyards (the producers of Caymus wines), a leader in Napa Valley cabernet, for its five-course Caymus Vineyards Winemaker Dinner. Held two or three times per cruise, it features a dinner for up to 12 guests that could very well be the highlight of their entire vacation. On a recent sailing, which started in Vancouver, British Columbia, and wended its way through San Francisco and Los Angeles, the food was fresh and sophisticated—and tailored to guests’ dietary preferences as needed.

The Winemaker Dinner menu consisted of an amuse-bouche (beef carpaccio or marinated fresh oyster mushrooms), a first course (fresh summer black truffle risotto with 36-month-aged Parmigiano Reggiano), main course (prime beef tenderloin with blossom artichokes or seared king salmon with giant prawn), cheese course and dessert (a beautiful chocolate raspberry creation). Oh, and each course was perfectly paired with the appropriate Wagner wine—including cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and sparkling wine—hand-selected by Chuck Wagner, the owner and winemaker of Caymus Vineyards.

It takes a talented team to pull off an epic meal like that as well as the other offerings on board. "At Princess, we have such a diverse group of chefs, which is a huge benefit to us, as we are able to use their expertise to introduce authentic flavors from all over the world," says Sodamin. "I present food as art—to be created with passion and served with love."

Fans of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto now have another way to experience his Japanese cuisine beyond his various restaurants around the world: on board the Nieuw Amsterdam . Holland America debuted Morimoto by Sea on Dec. 16, 2023, offering Asian-inspired dishes and beverages from Chef Morimoto, the cruise line's "Global Fresh Fish Ambassador." On this Caribbean cruise , you'll dine on appetizers such as sticky ribs, hamachi tacos, Morimoto fresh-tuna pizza and a sushi plate. Main courses include crispy fried whole-market fresh fish, angry lobster pad Thai, Japanese vegetable curry, and a surf-and-turf with wasabi-mayo lobster and grilled Wagyu kalbi. Watch for pop-up Morimoto by Sea events once per cruise on the fleet's other 10 ships too.

The Foundation firmly aligns with Windstar's commitment to fresh and local epicurean experiences around the world, as well as efforts to reduce food waste. No matter what flavors you're craving—we're talking pizza by the slice, sushi, caviar, oysters, burgers and tacos—you can find it on board.

Royal Caribbean is introducing several firsts on this ship, including the Empire Supper Club, an eight-course journey of traditional American fare (think: Wagyu New York strip steak topped with fresh-shaved truffle) that's perfectly paired with live jazz music. Calling all plant-based diners who love to cruise: A new vegan menu is currently available on Carnival Freedom in Port Canaveral, Florida, and Car nival Horizon in Port Miami—and will soon be implemented fleet-wide in a phased approach. Carnival chefs created recipes for each of their dishes to be prepared without the use of animal products, and the proteins included are made from meat substitutes. Look for tempting options such as Hawaiian Salmon Poke made with plant-based salmon, Spaghetti Carbonara with vegan bacon, Grilled Tofu Steak, and Eggplant Cutlet a la Parmigiana. For dessert, try the Cappuccino Pot de Crème or Key Lime Velvet Cake. Nine great ways to spend sea days on a cruise

From lectures that won’t bore you to sleep, to cookery courses and transformational spa treatments, our expert seeks out the best options

It’s all very well visiting fabulous places and enjoying bucket-list experiences , but what to do on those days when there’s literally nothing on the horizon except the actual horizon? 

If you’ve been packing your shore days with once-in-a-lifetime activities, you might welcome the chance of getting seriously acquainted with your cabin’s Egyptian cotton sheets. Or if you prefer to stay active, why not diarise a whole timetable of sea-day diversions? 

The options really are endless – we’ve curated the best below.

For the artist

If you eschew creative pursuits at home for fear of running into judgmental neighbours, art classes at sea could be just the ticket. Cunard offers watercolour lessons hosted by its own artist in residence. Materials are provided, all abilities are welcomed and there’s even an exhibition at the end of your voyage to show off your new masterpieces.

For the golfer

Fancy perfecting your golf skills while you’re on holiday? Crystal is the only luxury cruise brand to have a PGA professional onboard every sailing. With driving nets and a putting green, guests can take part in daily onboard golf classes (twice a day on sea days), private lessons and a round of golf at a port (at extra cost). You don’t even need to pack your own clubs; everything is provided.

For the learner

Enrichment programmes and guest lecturers are always popular on sea days, and Viking’s Culture Curriculum is one of the best. Listen to guest lectures from authors, archaeologists, former diplomats and news correspondents, chat to onboard historians, and watch Destination Insights films and Ted Talks such as “10 ways to have a better conversation” and “The surprising science of happiness”.

For the culture vulture

In terms of full cultural immersion, Windstar wins the race, with every cruise tailor-made to embrace the destination. On sea days on itineraries to Tahiti, for example, there are ukulele and drum lessons, Polynesian language, dancing and cooking classes, and various crafting sessions, including making a Polynesian headdress (beats a game of pickleball any day).

For the body beautiful

Want to feel like a new person when you get home from a cruise? How about looking significantly different, too? From teeth whitening to cellulite-reducing body sculpting and everything in between (aside from actual cosmetic surgery, though never say never), spa treatments go above and beyond on cruise ships. On Oceania, you’ll find pain management therapy, Biotech laser line therapy, Restylane dermal fillers, Dysport wrinkle treatments, Thermage skin tightening and even a 50-minute face lift. 

Oceania (0345 505 1920; oceaniacruises.com ) has the 24-day Athens to Miami Euro-Atlantic Explorer from £6,059pp with 11 days spent at sea. Departs November 11.

For the big kid

It’s official: toys are not just for children. Boutique cruising companies such as Emerald Cruises make the most of a fantastic array of aquatic toys, including stand-up paddleboards, inflatable kayaks, snorkel kits and thrilling water scooter seabobs. At the other end of the scale, the more budget-friendly Royal Caribbean offers the largest waterpark at sea, including the Pressure Drop, the first cruise-ship open freefall waterslide, on the world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas.   

Emerald Cruises (0161 516 8456; emeraldcruises.co.uk ) has the eight-day Grenadines and Windwards itinerary from £4,379pp including return flights, transfers, meals and use of all sea toys. Departs February 8 2025.

For the fitness-curious

The word “gym” may not be part of your land-based vernacular, but the new generation of cruise ships offer a much wider offering than the standard treadmills and dumbbells. As well as yoga, Pilates and fitness classes, Virgin Voyages offers bungee classes, barre workouts and a 250m (273-yard) running track. Virgin’s intimidatingly titled MyBeast facilities also feature oversized games and adult-sized seesaws. Somewhere to relax after a visit to the onboard tattoo parlour, perhaps?

Virgin Voyages (020 3003 4919; virginvoyages.com ) has the 11-night Barcelona to Civitavecchia cruise from £2,702pp, with three days spent at sea. Departs November 3.

For the budding chef

Cookery courses offered on cruise lines are typically about adding one pre-chopped thing to another and giving it a stir, rather than actually useful lessons. Not so with Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Its Epicurean Spotlight voyage offers wine pairing, mastering knife skills and classes preparing the various cuisines of the cruise.

Regent Seven Seas (023 8082 1390; rssc.com ) has a 10-night Epicurean Spotlight Voyage from Athens to Barcelona from £7829pp, calling at Istanbul, Sicily, Sorrento, Capri, Rome, Cannes and Provence. Departs August 14.

For the adventurer

Finally, if you’ve perfected your golf swing, learnt knife skills and paddleboarding, had your teeth whitened and watched umpteen Ted talks and movie premieres (offered on Disney Cruise Line), a helicopter flight could be the icing on the cake. When Scenic yachts are docked en route to destinations, passengers can make use of the onboard helicopter, Zodiac speedboat and mini submarine for undersea adventures.
