Trek Insurance

Trekking comes with its own set of risks. While adventure is fun and can be extremely thrilling, nature can be unpredictable, and to help secure you during your trek, it is of utmost importance that you are covered with insurance.

We've gone a step ahead and made sure that you don't have to worry about scouting for the best insurance option out there. When you trek with us, your insurance comes as a part of your inclusions.  To know more about the benefits covered and sum insured, click here .

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • We believe in leaving the mountains in a better condition, which is why we follow a no-litter policy on our treks. Each trekker will have to bring back the waste that is created during the trek.
  • Trekking is best enjoyed when you’ve worn comfortable clothes. Try and avoid wearing Jeans, bright colours and heavy apparels as much as possible.
  • A lighter backpack always helps you have a better trek, try and carry just as much as needed.
  • Always be in sight of your trek lead, if you feel the need to stop for any reason at all, please keep the trek lead informed.
  • If you do come across any reptiles, animals or even insects during the trek, please keep your calm and let it patiently pass by. Any kind of noise and panic will scare them as well.
  • Do not venture out into the forest/waterfalls on your own as it may be dangerous.
  • Trekking is a good adventure, having said that, it is our primary responsibility to take good care of ourselves and be compassionate towards fellow trekkers
  • If, at any point, during the trek, you feel uneasy or unwell, please inform the trek lead immediately
  • Tune in to the sounds of nature while on a trek and avoid carrying speakers or playing music during the course of the trek

About Place : Nishani Betta is a relatively unknown peak in the Nishani range. Galibeedu is 12 kms from Madikeri, the nearest town and district capital of Coorg. The region is covered in thick green forest, open meadows, rare flora and fauna and wide mountain ranges.

Coorg is now a flourishing agricultural center. With its misty mountains and dense forests, Coorg seems like a little corner of England to the British. They left behind a legacy, which is still an important source of national wealth. The well laid coffee plantations in Coorg account for almost half of Karnataka's coffee production. And Karnataka continues to be India's largest producer of coffee. Other remainders of the colonial past are the spacious estate bungalows, many of which still have British names and the meandering roads that wind through the district.

Nishani Motte Trek

from 1 review

2 Days 2 Nights

Nishanimotte / Betta is a relatively lesser-known peak in the range of Bhagamandala (Talakaveri ), Coorg. It is about 300+ Km from Bangalore and the trek distance from the base point Talakaveri is around 13 – 14 KMs . With amazing characteristic quality and a superb history, Coorg in Karnataka acts like an absolute necessity to visit the slope station in Karnataka. Coorg is known for its coffee, culture, its people, and awesome weather. Talakaveri is the spot that is commonly viewed as the wellspring of the stream Kaveri. A tank or klondike  has been erected on a hillside by  Kodavas , at the place that is said to be the origin. The waterway begins as a spring sustaining this tank, which is viewed as a blessed spot to wash on exceptional days.

Nishanimotte starts in rich Shola forests and meadows the trail follows an impressive ridge walk to the summit. The pinnacle offers an awesome perspective on the layers of the Brahmagiri extend. The Nishani Motte trek is guided by well versed Talakaveri Forest Department guide who is well aware of the route and wild animal zones. At a height of 4,167 ft. and in the company of clouds, the loudest sound you will hear is your heartbeat. The challenge, location, view, greenery, and overnight journey from Bangalore make it an ideal destination for weekend getaways. So, head to Coorg now to get the green therapy, sip the fresh coffee and live like Kodavas.

Nishanimotte trek path is a part of  Talakaveri Wildlife sanctuary which is home to several wildlife animals. So, it is strongly recommended that guided support from the Forest Department . We are directly coordinating with the Forest department for trekking permission.

Awesome trek . From pickup to drop the whole process was well executed. The only downside to the whole trek was that it wasn’t longer :D. Would have loved to spend another day with the group. Came into naturewalkers with many expectations and they passed with flying colors.

It was a heaven but, different from our spiritual experiences. It was definitely some other piece of the earth. In my words, it was a hardcore man’s paradise- Nishani Betta.

Nishani betta

A place where angels do not fly but the rain brings sweep pain when they fall hard on  our innocent cheeks. A place where there are no golds but I aver, every path is paved with the gold.

Taking the side of alpha manhood-

The androstadienone defined our manliness; The gushing adrenaline propelled us to the top; The force to stand alone against the wind defined our extremity And, Never to forget each drop of sweat that we shed, marked our territory.

Where angels do not fly

Yeah, I am talking about those 24 hours which we spent walking through heavy leech-infested forest in monsoon just to realize the virgin beauty of mother earth.

Yeah, I am talking about the times when hard rain drops were pattering over our poncho  almost deafening us. Yeah, I am talking about the sheer cold and wet nights when we six spent nights in three sleeping bags on 200 GSM tarpaulin

The story of Nishani Betta: The Talacauvery Wildlife sanctuary: Journey begins

Grasses holding the precious dew pearl

Leech vs Girlfriend:

Leech stick to you like your girl friend. Sucks your blood (read money). The more you push them, the closer they come. In a nutshell, it affects your heart (Remember heart breaks and the heart pumping blood). A dreaded thought from one of us: There might be a tiger following us quietly but alas! that tiger never attacked us in 12 hours. And, Another queer notion: Predicting the size or the presence of an elephant by looking at the freshness of the big lumps of the poop. Well! a naturalist in making.

Lesson: Never stop to pull away leeches, you cant get rid of them because the new leeches falling in love mostly outnumbers the fat leeches being pulled away (Does the girl friend concept apply here too?)

So, Run! Forrest Run! With  trails left behind Forrest was into core forest. Dark old woods; Moth-eaten smell of soaked fallen leaves; Some ghostly trees; The constant fear of carrying few leeches inside your shoes and around your knees and around thigh area and …(Left for the reader’s discretion as where?); The mist brushing through hair and the awesomeness was dimensionless.

Here comes the Nishani Betta part-one (The fake one)

“Anna! this is Nishani Betta” (Read the same in Kannada for better flavor), told the guide. What the feck! I never saw so much of lean and thin Nishani Betta over internet like a handicapped cock. A few minutes of discussion and we were informed by guide that that was Nishani betta part- one. He could not take us for a ride. Haha. Poor devil.

The ball of steel walk to the top:

Ball of steel walk

Back to APC (Anti Poaching Camp):

Looking at breaking air currents, It was impossible to pitch our tarp there lest that should be carried away in winds. We decided to return to APC. It was a descent of 2 hours. The scary walk had turned into a fun-walk, call the credit to our satiation of climbing at the apex target.

But, where to sleep?

The leech blood bath

The night falls in our shelter:

Dinner time

Sunrise next morning:

We made it. Shared the joy of looking at the cloudy sunrise. Gentle clouds hovering over hills and sliding along ridges and valleys. We even ate wild guavas from the farm fresh of the hut-guy.

Back to basics:

Eventually every beginning comes to an end. So was our trek. We trek down 6 kms to Baghamandala following a jeep trail through green coffee plantation estates. It did not take more than 2 hours. We had nice dip at Cauvery Sangam . Boarded a bus to Madikeri and every thing we did was left behind.  Each casual step that we took;  Each trunk we rubbed our shoulders with;   Each laugh that echoed across dark woods; Every kisses we had with nature. You will never miss the wonders that surround you because every tree, every rock, every anthill, every sun ray, every star is filled with wonders of nature. Have you ever noticed how graceful you are to see daylight after coming through a long dark tunnel?

Life after a dark tunnel

Bus was moving slowly in hand in hand with nature love; We smiling at our favorable fate and the clock ticking away like a dreamy world fading away and the worldly reality appearing gradually. The bus moved on, moved on and moved on until we all fell asleep….. we opened our eyes just to realize the fact that we were into mundane world again.

Remarkable Trek To Nishani Motte

The relatively unknown peak of Nishani Motte is located in the Tala Cauvery/ Branhmagiri range that forms a part of Coorg. The peak is also known by the name of Nishani Betta which literally translates to marked hill in the local language. The name is derived from the fact that during the British era, the peak was used as a mark to find the directions to different places on the hill path. In addition to having a picturesque landscape the peak provides a stunning view of the other hills and mountains of the Brahmagiri range.

The Nishani Motte Trek in Coorg offers a great opportunity for the participants to explore the majestic natural beauty of the region at close quarters. The scenic and fascinating trail commences in the rich Shola forests and meadows and continues all the way up the summit adjoining a remarkable ridge walk. The entire trip generally takes two days to complete as once the trekkers reach the summit they camp out in the forest at the anti-poaching site. It is this exciting combination of trekking and camping that makes Nishani Motte a perfect weekend getaway for people in nearby cities.

The base camp for the trek is located in Bhagamandala, a small town in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Being located along the banks of River Cauvery, gives this small town a unique beauty of its own, which is further enhanced by the warm and welcoming nature of the local people. However, most trekkers, who just book tour packages to Coorg, are unaware of the fact that they need to seek a permit from the Forest department for undertaking this trek. The permit can be easily obtained at the FRH office in Bhagamandala.

Since the trail is not quite popular, it is relatively pristine and untouched by human destruction, which makes it even more spectacular.  With every step they take, the trekkers are left spellbound by the magnificent views of the sprawling coffee plantations, extensive spice gardens and elegant Victorian era villas and of course the mesmerizing Western Ghats. Upon reaching the peak the trekkers can avail the overnight camping facility at the base of the peak or can choose to experience the best home stay in Coorg among the locals living in the area.

The 26 km long trek offers a difficulty level of easy to moderate in addition to which the trekkers have to face a unique set of challenges in the trail. However, they are amply rewarded for their efforts when they discover the magical beauty that forms an integral part of the entire trail of this least known destination for trekking in Coorg. In fact there are several deviations waiting to be explored on this trail, but it is in the best interest of the trekkers to remain with their group and follow the instructions of their guide verbatim.

  • Coorg treehouse near Nishanibetta: Trek experience

As I was looking for offbeat places to visit around Madikeri, Nishani Betta came to my attention. Nishani Betta wasn't too far- only 10 kms from Madikeri and hence felt worth exploring. Last Sunday we drove towards Nishani Betta early in the morning, expecting to return to hotel by 8.30-9 AM.
