Kullu is called the “land of the gods”, and quite aptly so. Mystical Malana to serene Manikaran, it lures tourists for many reasons. The town of Manali is seated comfortably in the River Beas Valley, and its popularity has increased faster than the clouds that dance on its hilltops. Wonderfully combining nature and adventure, it is serenity, history, nature, spirituality and shopping, all merged into one. An Insight into Kullu Manali Tourism

Both Kullu and Manali, top tourist destinations of Himachal Pradesh, seem to outdo the other in their scenic magnificence and opportunities for sightseeing & adventure. Kullu, the town believed to be apt for the gods, pleasantly surprises the visitor with the diversity it offers. In Manali, what you see is what you get, raw beauty with serenity, the likes of which you may have only dreamt about.

There are many things to see in Kullu, like the Great Himalayan National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which houses a rich variety of wildlife. Several of these are classified as endangered, including Himalayan Brown Bear, Blue Sheep and Snow Leopard. Spotting of Monal and Western Tragopan is not uncommon. Trekking and outdoor camping are also pursued enthusiastically in the park.

Manikaran is another place to see in Kullu which is most famous for its gurudwara. Here, the hot sulphur springs are believed to contain therapeutic properties. Kasol, fondly referred to as mini-Israel for attracting Israelis in large numbers, allures more than its fair share of honeymooners, while the village of Malana has that ancient look to it. Banjar, located almost 2 hours away from Kullu, affords a lot of opportunities in angling, thanks to River Tirthan and its pure as crystal waters. At about the same distance lies Shoja, a valley wrapped in contemplative silence and undisturbed beauty, and truly meditator’s paradise. Another place which you should visit during your trip to Kullu is Jalori Pass. From here, you can take a day hike to Serolsar Lake.

Adventure enthusiasts also find a lot to celebrate in Kullu. Battling the rapids while white water rafting on River Beas is fun, as is camping in Raison, surrounded by peach, plum and apple orchards. Hike towards the Bijli Mahadev Temple though, where lovely views of the Kullu Valley await you. Inside the temple is a Shiva Linga, which, besides being pillar shaped, is held together with butter. Every year, fiery bolts of lightning destroy this pillar, until it is rebuilt by the priests with butter.

Manali is another top tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh, popular both among honeymooners and vacationers. This quaint town shows you how to have a good time. It is hugged by the valley, which itself is covered with pine forests, streams and perpetually snow-covered peaks. There are as many opportunities for adventure as sightseeing, besides a third one, which is enjoying the lovely landscape and doing nothing.

The greatest tourist attraction though, is Rohtang Pass. About 51 km from Manali, it is the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti, and offers a chance to enjoy activities like paragliding , skiing and trekking. Along the way, you are treated to views of waterfalls, pastures and streams. The tired eyes and the fatigued mind rejoice at such beautiful sights.

However, it should be remembered that you will have to obtain a special permit for visiting Rohtang Pass. During the winters, it wears a white coat, with fir trees acting as its embroidery. During the summers, it discards it, and replaces it with an easily flowing green garment. That’s Solang Valley for you, located about 13 km from Manali and a magnificent place to see in Himachal Pradesh. A variety of adventure activities can be enjoyed, from zorbing to a ropeway ride. Come winters, and skiing is all the rage, with state and national level ski championships being held regularly.

Another tourist attraction in Manali is the Hadimba Devi Temple , a four tier pagoda style wood and stone structure which is believed to contain the imprints of Hadimba Devi. You could also head to Naggar, located about 22 km from Manali. It served as the capital of the principality before it was shifted to Kullu in 1660 AD. There are many monuments here that remind you of its glorious past, including a 500 year old castle. Nowadays, it functions as a museum and heritage hotel. Vashisht Village is famous, as is the Bhrigu Lake , which is believed to be the meditation spot of Sage Bhrigu.

Other places to see during your Kullu Manali tour are Nehru Kund, Jagat Sukh Village, Manali Wildlife Sanctuary and Mountaineering Institute. If a little bit of sightseeing is all that you need, there are other ways to enjoy yourself. You can hang around at The Mall, explore the bazaar for some travel souvenirs, woolens and Himachali handloom products or head towards Old Manali, which is much more quieter than New Manali. Oh, and you can also enjoy various types of Mexican, Italian and Israeli dishes from a restaurant’s rooftop.

Manali Trip – Himachal Pradesh [An Ultimate Travel Guide for Everyone]

One of the most popular tourist places in Northern India is situated in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh on the banks of Beas River and at an altitude of 1950 Meters or 6500 Feet (approximately) Manali, Valley of Gods. The term stands for Manu (Manu Rishi) + Aali (Home) and I bet you his home (Manali ;)) is just MAGICAL in nature.

The place is ideal for families as well as young couples looking for some hide and seek with the flavor of romance on top of it. Manali is largely visited by the honeymoon couples (I did so, read my story Snow at Manali and Naggar | Honeymoon Trip ) and in summers people from all walks of life (children to old) come to Manali to seek pleasant weather from hot burning lands of Northern India.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

Manali Travel Guide

Manali is one of the oldest towns in Kullu Valley. The place surrounds with the aura of ROMANCE everywhere, right from the hustle-bustle of mall road to the very calm, traditional, foreigners dominated old Manali to the woods/villages around/beyond Manu temple to the walking path around Hadimba temple. It can easily be called one of the ROMANTIC destinations of India.

The Hadimba goddess runs the Manali town and is the center of worship of the people living at Manali. The mighty goddess also governs the tall mountains along with raw nature, and it’s only after her permission that one gets to enjoy this beautiful place to the core. When people think of Manali, the second keyword that comes is, of course, Rohtang Pass which no doubt is a must-visit place if you go to Manali.

Manali Weather

The weather in Manali offers a variety throughout the year. If you like the cold weather and snow, then you can enjoy winters from November to February. However, you can experience nice and pleasant Manali weather in summers from March to October.

I recommend that you avoid traveling to Manali in the month monsoons, late July to August and nowadays some part of September as well. Landslides and flooding are common on Delhi to Manali highway in monsoon time. You do not want to get stuck in the middle of it. Although July-August experience rainfall but this place has again, it’s unique beauty when it rains 🙂

Hence, the best time to visit Manali is March to June when the heat is burning the low lands of Northern India. Then during the autumn season from the middle of September to late October is also a nice time to visit it. However, during the Dusherra festival, the Kullu region gets very crowded.

If you are fond of snow or snowfall, then visit Manali from late December to March for enjoying the snow in Manali, Rohtang Pass, or Solang Valley. You may witness snowfall also in January and February, depending on the weather at the time of the visit.

No doubt it is one of the top places to see snowfall near Delhi in Himachal .

What is the best time to visit Manali

April to June is the best time to visit Manali, but do keep in mind that in summers (April-June), people from most Northern parts of India invade this place like anything and seeing the Mall road in the evening can cause serious shiver in your head. It’s almost you are in Trade Fair of Pragati Maidan, Delhi 😆

But if you enjoy it, then it’s an awesome time to visit Manali. Also, you can take the shelter in Old Manali in such extreme cases, which is far off from the hustle-bustle of the (over) crowd. Right from accommodation to food to shopping to taxi/auto fares, everything is costly in this peak season summer holidays in the Himalayas .

If you are looking for adventure sports then, hit for skiing December to February season is the best time and for rafting May to September would do good. All of you who seeks Paragliding in Manali, it’s always dependent on the weather on the current day of the year 🙂

What about Honeymoon in Manali?

For a honeymoon, of course, if you get married in winters, then late November to February is the best time to be in Manali. It is one of those places where you can find snow easily in winter months.

You get an additional benefit of the heavy discounts, being off-season topped with less number of tourists. Finally, you get to see similar love birds thronging the region of Manali and Solang Valley.

Hence, without any doubt, Manali does get to my list of best honeymoon places in Himachal .

What time to avoid?

Do avoid Durga Puja holidays mainly in October when the rush is at peak again, and people flood the Kullu Manali towns like anything. It is also the Dusherra Festival time in Kullu Valley with which also valley is under heavy tourist rush.

Also, there is an official HPTDC off-season at the time of monsoon and winters (usually mid-November to February) when they provide a 30% discount on their services.

How to reach Manali from Delhi

Manali is well connected by road from Delhi vis National Highways. You will find ample of public transport as well from Delhi to Manali or Chandigarh to Manali. Let us look into the various options of traveling to Manali by road.

The nearest airport to Manali is Bhunter about 50 km away. From Bhuntar-Kullu, you can hire a taxi to reach Manali in 90 minutes approximately. The fare of a taxi could be Rs 1000 – Rs 1200, depending upon the bargaining skills as well as season time.

Chandigarh is the closest major Railway Station from where it will take around 9 hours to reach Manali by bus or car. Apart from that Joginder Nagar railway station near Mandi can be considered as the nearest one. However, the connectivity can be limited to it from far-flung places in India.

Dheeraj Sharma

The distance of Manali from Delhi is 570 km (approximately) and it takes around 12-14 hours to reach depending upon traffic and how you drive.

Generally, the route followed for Manali from Delhi by road is –

Delhi – Ambala (188 KM) – Chandigarh – Roopnagar (282 KM) – Kiratpur – Bilaspur (371 KM) – Sunder Nagar – Mandi (440 KM) – Pandoh – Aut (481 KM) – Kullu – Manali (570 KM)

HPTDC Volvo Buses also run from Delhi at 6 PM every day from HPTDC Office, Janpath. These buses reach Manali the next morning around 8 AM. The fare is around Rs 1300-1400 for one side. The similar buses leave from Manali every evening at 5.30 PM and reaching Delhi by 7.00 AM the next morning. There are other daily buses available from HRTC as well from ordinary to Volvos that run between Delhi to Manali and Chandigarh to Manali.

Road Conditions from Delhi to Manali

Delhi to Manali roads run on NH-21 and NH-1 highways and are pretty much in great shape being a highway. In the entire route, there are one or two rough patches so that you never lose your concentration.

Especially, the drive from Kiratpur to Sunder Nagar is horrible with trucks running madly all over the road on both sides, slowing you down terribly. A slight Chandigarh to Roopnagar stretch is also in bad shape but the rest of the road conditions are pure bliss to drive.

Preferred Vehicles

The best way is to take your car/bike and hit the road as there is no such specialty required in the vehicle, be it 2X2 or 4X4. You can take it as long as its engine runs and fuel exists 😉

An alternate route to Manali from Delhi

The regular route to Manali via NH-21, that is Manali – Chandigarh Highway, is mostly in pathetic condition from Kiratpur Sahib to Bilaspur. The beelines of slow-moving trucks, chaotic overtaking of these overloaded trucks, and deep crater-sized potholes all around on almost 70 km of stretch. The journey becomes so tiring and frustrating…

For the last few times when I went to Tirthan Valley from Delhi , we took the route as

Kiratpur Sahib > Anandpur Sahib > Nangal > Una > then turn right towards Bhota > then again right towards Jahu > at T-Point, turn left towards Ner Chowk. Don’t go towards Sunder Nagar as you will lose a couple of hours then.

This is a bit longer route, maybe 55-60 km, but the time difference is almost about 40-45 minutes only. However, roads are super smooth all the way to cruise upon apart from last average roads of 25 km after Jahu to Ner Chowk. It does save you from all the frustration and risks of accidents.

So, better avoid the NH-21 route and take this route via Una – Bhota to reach Manali or beyond Mandi to Himachal .

Bus Service from Delhi – Manali

As per HRTC FB Page, both HRTC & HPTDC operates a total of six daily Volvo buses from Manali to Delhi. While HRTC charges ₹1283- for this service, HPTDC charges ₹1300/-. Travel time is roughly 14 hours (580 km).

Bus Timings from Manali : 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm, and 6:30 pm.

Bus Timings from Delhi : HPTDC (from Himachal Bhawan)- 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm; HRTC (from Delhi ISBT)- 7:35 pm, 8:00 pm, 8:25 pm, and 9:03 pm.

Common Itinerary for Manali Trip in 3 Days

From Delhi to visit Manali, you require at least 3 Nights, 4 Days and it would be great if you have more 🙂 But ideally, in 3 Nights / 4 Days, you can cover the majority of this place. I would also provide some add-on or pop-up day tours which you can include exclude as you like.

Day 0 / Night – Overnight from Manali to Delhi

Leave Delhi in the evening to reach Manali the next morning either by car/or Volvo bus. You can take a morning flight to Kullu as well which takes you to the first day.

Day 1 – Manali Local Sightseeing

Check-in at the hotel in Manali, rest for a few hours and go on for local sightseeing. This sightseeing may include Mall road (which of course you can’t avoid any day), Local Monastery, Hadimba Devi Temple, Manu Rishi Temple in the evening through the streets of Old Manali. You can have dinner at one of the traditional/western cuisine restaurants at Old Manali. Come back to the hotel for the rest.

Day 2 – Visit Rohtang Pass or Snow Points

Leave for Rohtang Pass early in the morning to avoid traffic jams. Mind it; it can be the worse jam of the trip, so be prepared. It is always better to avoid by leaving for Rohtang Pass from Manali early morning maybe 7 AM Come back to the hotel by the evening at around 4 PM to rest at the hotel and enjoy the mall road in the evening/night.

Day 3 – Visit Solang Valley

Visit Solang Valley if you want to do some adventure sports and enjoy the day there. Come back in the evening. Leave for the home in the night, either by taking the evening Volvo or by your own car.

Trip to Manali in 5 Days

Continuing the above 3-day itinerary of Manali trip for those who have more days in hand.

Day 4 – Visit Nagar Castle – Jagatsukh

If you are not interested in visiting a unique place, then include Naggar Castle in your trip with a night stay at Naggar Castle. Well, the views it offers are just breathtaking. So you can also opt for Naggar in place of Solang if you don’t like adventure sports, then replace this day with the trip to Naggar Castle, just 30 odd km from Manali.

For a honeymoon, it’s one of the best places to stay and must-visit for couples looking for an ideal romantic point . To get the glimpses of the views from Naggar Castle, check these links of my visit to this beautiful place.

You may take a day trip to Naggar and leave for Manali the same day if you don’t like much but better include a night stay at this lovely hotel. Next morning you can leave to Delhi from Naggar itself.

Jagatsukh comes on the way as well and it is one of the offbeat places in Himachal .

Day 5 – Visit Parvati Valley (Manali to Kasol)

Another set of places you may include on your Manali trip is that you leave for Kullu or Kasol in the evening. If it’s the penultimate day of the trip or early morning on any day if you have an ample amount of time. Just it would be great if you can do it on the way back home towards Delhi or a similar route.

Reach Kullu, shop in the market and head towards Kasol & Manikaran. Visit this holy place and leave for Kasol, where you can enjoy the evening in nice Israeli flavor. If you have time, then dedicate a day to Kasol and try to enjoy the environment to the core besides the Parvati River.

Leave for Delhi in the evening and reach by morning.

Where to stay in Manali

There are a lot of hotel options available in Manali for accommodation ranging from luxury hotels to budget range hotels. Well, I have been to all three kinds on my previous trips to Manali, and this is what I felt a nice list to narrow down the choices.

Of course, I would say these are just hotels known to me, or I have taken feedback from my family members who have stayed there 🙂

• HPTDC, Kunzum : Hotel Kunzum is just on the Mall road provides you with ample facilities being on the Mall road. Everything is so nearby, and I would recommend it for families with children. Kids tend to demand this, and that now and then, which makes Hotel Kunzum a good choice as everything you get in Manali is so nearby. The range is Rs 1700 – Rs 3000
• HPTDC, Hadimba Cottages / Log / Hamta Huts: These huts ideal for honeymoon lovers are located a bit isolated towards Old Manali, again which is what love birds seek. But, don’t catch it into very offseason as it may also scare a bit out of you being alone. At least we felt so when we stayed, and food is not that good quality. • Johnson’s: Located near Circuit House is very famous for its cuisines. The rooms are comfortable and worth the money. Even if you don’t stay, do have a meal or two in its restaurant. The range is Rs 2200- Rs4000.
• Picadilly Resort : This is at the start of Mall road and not at all a budget hotel. We stayed here in the very offseason, and still, we got a room for 1500 😯 I believe. But I must say the money was worth it as the hotel has all sorts of deserving offerings one would like.
• HPTDC, Rohtang Manalsu & The Beas: This hotel is a bit away from the hustle-bustle of town but very moderate budget hotels. The range is 650-2000, and you can always stay here if you are short on budget.

So, if you are no short of the budget go for Johnson’s or Picaddily Resorts, although there are more luxury Hotels also available which you may check for sure.

If you are short on a budget either choose HPTDC, Rohtang Manalsu or HPTDC, The Beas or else you can very well walk to the streets of Old Manali where you will get excellent deals for some cheap hotels in Manali.

HPTDC is always a safe bet if you are in a dilemma for a cheap hotel, I believe.

Budget Hotels in Manali

You can find lots of budget hotels around Manali in Vashishth, Old Manali, and hotels on the Manali – Naggar road near Beas Bridge. The one at Manali – Naggar road named The River View and one just before that hotel are good and economic options of stay in Manali.

Where to eat

• Johnson’s, located near Circuit House is very famous for its cuisines. A meal here is a must for us whenever we go to Manali.
• Chopsticks , located at Mall road, has a great variety of Chinese dishes topped with great taste.
• Grozy , located just at the start of Mall road shops is also quite good in food quality. In fact on the trip, we just had our meal in this restaurant only.
• IL Forno is by far the best place for Pizzas in Manali. If you love Pizzas then do not forget to check this awesome place.
• Sher-e-Punjab or Shan – e -Punjab (the original one) is also a good food joint although I have never been there due to long queues 😀

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Tips to travel in winters

• Do take heavy woolens with you especially a heavy woolen jacket.
• Do take 2-3 pairs of inner thermals cots.
• Do take woolen long socks. Airtight shoes would be perfect for helping you avoid freezing feet.
• Do not exert yourself too much and try to keep your body hydrated on the day when visiting snow points.
• Take at least one full day rest in Manali before venturing further heights. i.e., snow points in Solang or Gulaba. DO NOT go to snow points on the very first day you reach Manali region.

Manali Tourist Attractions

There are several tourist places around Manali and inside Manali town which a tourist can visit. These places can be photographed clicked for some great memories in life. I will enlist some of them below.

Manali Local Sightseeing

Let us start with local sightseeing in Manali. You can check the below destinations within Manali town or quite nearby.

You can enjoy food and shop on this very road. There are few Hotels as well on the road, including Hotel Kunzum, HPTDC. There is one Temple as well at the Mall road just aside Bus and Taxi Stand.

Hadimba Temple

It’s near Circuit House approximately 15-20 minutes’ walk. Autos run all-time in Manali to take you to the local tourist joints but charge a bit high. I feel walking down to these places has the fun of its own kind.

Manu Temple

As you cross through the streets of lovely Old Manali, you will reach this temple. Chingu is what you will hear all over as you start entering the road. Don’t fall into the trap of salesman of buying it, most of them are duplicate makes.

Local Monastery

The local monastery is situated just a few 200 odd meters from the bus stand at Mall road. You can surely buy some souvenirs from the shops in front of the local Manali monastery.

Vashishth Hot Water Springs

Personally I didn’t like this place at all and considered it a total waste of time.

Trekking Trails near Manali

Other trails in the woods through local villages and old Manali can be enjoyed as well.

• There is a trek from Old Manali, Manu Temple that goes to Goshal village about a couple of km. You can extend this trek further to Solang Valley which is about 10 km from there.
• Then there is a trek to Lamadugh meadows , which starts from Hadimba Temple. It will take about 2-3 hrs for this trek and you will get to see snow-clad peaks and Manali town down below.
• You may also travel to Bijli Mahadev from Kullu.

Rohtang Pass

At the altitude of 13,051 feet or 3978 Meters, this Pir Panjal Range pass is a must-visit for every tourist who goes to Manali. You can find snow throughout the year at this place and is reachable from May End – October. It connects the Kullu Valley to Lahaul-Spiti Valley and is one of the main blockage points of Manali – Leh Ladakh connectivity .

Solang Valley

Mountaineering and Allied sports Institute, Manali conducts various courses on skiing at this place, and if you love adventure sports, you may find this place very exciting. Along with this, it also offers snow-capped views of glaciers and even snow in winters. The place also helps in proper acclimatization if you wish to head Leh Ladakh. It will help you avoid AMS .

Naggar Castle

Naggar is just an amazing place that I have already explained in the itinerary section. If you are really looking for some romantic joint, Naggar Castle is surely the place to be. Do read more at Naggar Castle, Naggar .

It’s a major district of Himachal Pradesh and lies at the banks of Beas river. The airport Bhunter is just 10 km from this place, and you will find ample place to shop.

42 km from Kullu, Kasol situated at the banks of Parvati river is yet another place that is a must-visit and provides a unique experience with Israeli atmosphere dominating the air. It’s a hub of backpackers, and what they are after, you very well know. Do not forget to check my comprehensive travel guide of Parvati Valley .

It’s a Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage center located between the Beas and Parvati Rivers. Well, you may like it, or you may not like it. It’s a matter of taste but a couple of hours given to this holy place is worth enough.

Hot water springs about 10 km before Manali on the roadside itself. Thanks to Ajay for sharing this place with us at the comment here , will check next time I visit up there.

In the end, Manali and its nearby locations are a complete package for any vacation. The place suits a wide range of tourists with an even wider taste of spending time in the mountain. You get the romance, the adventure, the rejuvenation, the offbeat and the mad rush of tourists, all nearby Manali.

Keep a tab on weather reports as rains are happening. In case there is a prediction of heavy rains, better avoid traveling.

Is it a good time to visit Manali during last week of March? Will Rothang Pass visit be allowed during that time?

Rohtang Pass will be closed in March but you can enjoy Manali trip in March with snow points of Gulaba or Marhi

Hi Amit, the roads are well built from Delhi to Manali barring few patches of bad roads with potholes but nothing like off roading, just bad road conditions. Snow is not present on road up to Manali and beyond Manali better to hire a local taxi for sightseeing. IF you drive cautious and carefully and have good driving experience, the basics will help you drive to Manali from Delhi without much difficulty. Do not overtake ever on turns in mountains, do not over take unless you have clear visibility of traffic coming from opposite side because people do drive rashly and many times over take on turns. Be patient, you will get chance to overtake other slow vehicles but do not risk it.

I will suggest talking to your Pediatrician and ask his inputs for taking an infant on a long journey. Altitude-wise, Manali has vegetation and does not cause any health issues. Try avoid going higher than Manali.

There is no such requirement to reach Manali Govind. Creta is more than capable to reach Manali on any day in a year. Yes, at time when there is heavy snowfall, the roads get filled with snow for a day or two but administration clears it soon as the weather clears up. During that time, no vehicle, including 4×4 can pass through. But that only happens if the heavy snowfall coincides with the date of travel.

Had a small query!! We are a group off 6ppl and are planning a bike trip from delhi to manali over a period of 5days between 11th to 15th august 2017. Is it advisable to visit manali on bikes during august? Are there any chances of landslides over the delhi manali route via shimla?? How difficult would the terrain be?

Well Riya, it will be rains in Himachal or North India during that time of the year. The roads are fine but with bikes you have to face the rain hassles all throughout in case it rains on those days which in general does every year. Roads are tarred up to Manali. There will be landslides or road blocks but then again, if it rains heavily it will not be possible to ride on bikes.

Delhi to Shimla is still fine as roads are wide and well laid out till Shimla. Also, there is no river nearby too in Shimla route. I will suggest to keep the options open, in case there are no rain predictions for the week, go for Manali trip else go for Shimla. But, be cautious and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

No roads are open in Himachal in July almost up to third week before the monsoon comes. Once monsoon comes to Himachal, landslides are common.

Mani, well, there are plenty of options in Shimla but I never prefer to stay in concrete jungle like it. For Manali, you may opt for Johnsons.

Actually, I am planning to Visit Manali in the last week of May for a full week and wanted to cover Rahtang Pass, Solang Valley and Kullu in first 4 days and then want to move Kajjiar which I believe approx. 400Km from Manali and from Kajjiar back to Gurgaon.

Yeah Sanjay, the roads to Manali are fine barring the stretech from Swarghat to Bilaspur where road conditions have pot holes and truck traffic but nothing a sedan cannot handle. Your plan looks fine to me. Have couple of spare days at least for Khajjiar.

4-5 days for both Shimla and Manali will be very hectic considering you planning the honeymoon. I will suggest to restric it to one of the places preferably Manali. You can opt for Johnson’s Cafe or Log Huts in Manali for it.

I will not suggest you undertake such a hectic plan. You should keep Agra for some other time in future and focus over just a relaxing holiday in Manali and around. The journey is 14 Hrs from Delhi to Manali and takes a toll on your body. Then again going over 8 Hrs journey for Agra and back will surely gonna exhaust you all !! Hence, best is to stick to Manali and enjoy it at leisure.

1. You can go for Johnson’s, both are near to mall road and exceptionally good. 2. Cabs should range from anywhere between 3000-4000 for a day trip to snow points. I suggest to skip Agra. Use Volvo to reach Manali from Delhi and Volvo to come back. No private volvo, only opt for HPTDC or HRTC volvos. For local sightseeing in Manali, hire local cab.

Yes Venkatesh, as long as the driver has slept for the day and fresh to drive the whole night, it is fine to travel overnight. All volvo buses of himachal tourism run overnight only.

HELLO sir me and my friend wants to go manali then rohtang pass on my bike from Delhi……We are planning to go there on 26th oct…Do you have Any Advice for us regarding permit do we go to rohtang pass same day when we got our permit if applicable….Someone said to rohtang pass you can go freely without a permit from SDM office if we go beyond rohtang pass we need a permit it is so confusing we book a hotel for 2 nights we just want see rohtang pass this time…Plz reply as soon as possible…

Atul, you will need permit for Rohtang Pass which can be issued from SDM office in Manali by showing the vehicle RC, PUC and your driving license.

Travel Guide to Manali, India

Surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, Manali, India, is a popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh for Indians and adventurous foreign travelers. The Middle Himalaya Range provides a scenic backdrop while exploring Manali and the region.

Locals come to Manali for the fresh air and winter sports. Western travelers often use the mountain town as a base for trekking and outdoor adventures. Everyone enjoys the snowy scenery; a mountain stream passes right through town.

The Best Way to Get to Manali

Manali is around 350 mountainous miles from Delhi and is situated along the Beas River in the Kullu Valley at an elevation of 6,725 feet (2,050 meters).

The nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar in Kullu (airport code: KUU ), but flights are intermittent. With no railway, reaching Manali typically involves a long, winding bus that crosses mountain passes at high elevation. Don't bemoan the lack of options: The fact that Manali is difficult to reach contributes to its charm (and lack of over development).

Bus From Delhi: You can take a 14-hour Volvo night bus from Delhi to Manali. Overnight buses usually depart around 5 p.m. and arrive late the next morning.

Buses do not have an onboard toilet, however, they make frequent stops. Plan on a very bumpy, winding ride! Take precautions if you are prone to car sickness. For better mountain views, sit on the right side of the bus. If you're squeamish about seeing the road drop off around some turns, sit on the left!

Bus From Dharamsala to Manali: Volvo tourist buses from Mcleod Ganj and Dharamsala leave nightly at 8:30 p.m.; the journey takes around nine hours.

Orientation

Tourist buses and minibuses usually arrive at a private bus lot around 200 meters south of Manali. Public buses arrive at the bus lot in the center of town. You can easily walk north on the main road (Mall Road) to town or grab one of the waiting autorickshaws ; always agree on a price before getting inside.

The wide, busy strip through Central Manali is known as "The Mall." Although there are several grungier hotel options along the main drag and on side streets, most travelers prefer to stay just outside of town in either Old Manali or across the river in Vashisht.

Many travelers escape hectic Central Manali by walking north up the leg-burning hill to peaceful Old Manali. The single strip through Old Manali is dotted with plenty of budget and midrange accommodation options . Tourist-oriented restaurants serve Indian, Tibetan food, and lots of Western favorites; you'll even find Mexican food and sushi on some menus!

Old Manali is an excellent choice for escaping the busy Mall but staying within range of town. Walk north on Mall Road then continue north on Circuit House Road to the steel bridge. Cross the river and turn left; numerous signs indicate where to go.

A little less accessible but certainly good for tight budgets, Vashisht is strung out along the hill across the Beas River and highway opposite of Old Manali.

To reach Vashisht, you'll have to cross the bridge just north of Central Manali then walk north along the busy Naggar Highway. You can turn right and continue walking along Vashisht Road or take a small, steep trail through a hillside community to Vashisht. Otherwise, an autorickshaw from Central Manali is inexpensive.

The vibe in Vashisht is laid back but in a different way than Old Manali. Plenty of backpackers on shoestring budgets head to Vashisht for the cheap accommodation and good views from balconies and rooftops.

Tips for Visiting Manali

• Internet access is more reliable in Old Manali. Many cafes and guesthouses have free Wi-Fi , however, speeds vary. Check to see that a connection is working before you commit to buy something.
• You'll find many ATMs in Central Manali around the northern end of the Mall. For safety, opt to use ATMs that are attached to bank branches when possible.
• Many shops and restaurants in Manali close down around mid October. Some of the owners head home or move to Goa for the winter months.
• Motorbike rentals are an option for experienced drivers to reach the many natural attractions just outside of town. Otherwise, you can consider hiring a driver for the day.
• Although hash and marijuana are smoked openly (especially in Vashisht) both are still illegal in India.

Things to Do in Manali

Manali is an epicenter in Himachal Pradesh for outdoor adventure sports. From rock climbing and multi-day treks to paragliding and even zorbing, Manali is a happy playground for adrenaline seekers. Numerous agencies around Vashisht and Old Manali can arrange exciting activities.

Two hot springs, one in Vashisht and one in Kalath, are famous for their mineral-rich water purported to have health benefits.

Whitewater rafting is an option during the dry season. The river can become too swift during monsoon season.

Skiing is available during the winter months in the Solang Valley, just eight miles north of Manali.

When to Visit in Manali

The weather in Manali varies greatly throughout the year. Even in October you'll sweat in a T-shirt on sunny days then shiver at night when temperatures dip sharply. Summers can bring temperatures around 80 degrees F , but the mercury can drop well below freezing from October to April. Dress appropriately! Most guesthouses do not have central heating, but personal heaters can sometimes be rented for an additional charge.

Mountain weather is unpredictable; always plan for rain or quick temperature changes when setting out on an adventure, especially if you're hitting the trails self guided.

Where to Go After Manali

While Manali offers the Mall Road and the fancy hotels, Old Manali gives you hipster cafes. While in peak season the roads are jam-packed with cars that don't appear to move at all, you will simultaneously hear the roar of a mighty river, amid a backdrop of towering mountains. While your hotel will be next to countless others, the balcony in your room will have an unobstructed view of the city overshadowed by the mountains. A trip to Manali is signified by such contracting experiences and sights.

Best Time to Visit Manali

• Summer (March - June): Summer season is the most popular time of the year to visit Manali. However, because a lot of people take a family vacation over the summer holidays, Manali gets overcrowded during this time of the year. Expect lengthy traffic jams.
• Monsoon (July - Early September): The rainy months are a bad time to visit Manali. Over the past few years, Manali has been experiencing flooding which has led to property and road damage thus stranding tourists and the movement of locals during this time.
• Winter (October - February): The shoulder season between monsoon and winter as well as between winter and summer is the best time to visit Manali. With pleasant weather, next to no crowds and a relaxing atmosphere, I loved my Manali trip late in September. To experience snow, visit Manali in December or early January.

How to Reach Manali

There are numerous ways to reach Manali. It's well-connected by air (Kangra and Bhuntar airport), and road. Reaching Manali via bus or by driving here from Delhi is the most popular option though.

Nearest Airport to Manali

Kangra Airpor t near Dharamshala has regular daily flights to and from Delhi. Most of the popular Indian airlines operate 1-2 flights between Delhi and Kangra daily. Keep in mind that flight operations can often get affected in mountainous areas due to bad weather. Dharamshala to Manali is an 8-10 hour journey which can be covered by bus or a hired taxi cab.

Nearest Railway Station to Manali

Chandigarh Railway Station is located at a distance of 315 km from Manali whereas Pathankot railway station is 290 km from Manali. Reaching Manali from Chandigarh is a viable option since there are many state-run as well as private buses plying on this popular route.

There are numerous buses from Delhi to Manali. The Himachal Pradesh State Government buses (HPCA) have buses that leave from Kashmiri Gate Delhi in the evening which reach Manali in the morning. The buses come in various ranges of comfort such as AC, non-AC, Volvo, regular etc.

Another extremely popular option, which is used by most people, is to get your own bike or car to Manali. The drive is scenic to say the very least, and there's the flexibility to do things on your own schedule. Not to mention that if you're in a group travelling together, travel costs are considerably cut down.

Where to Stay in Manali

I'm a sucker for rooms that offer views of mountains or beaches or anything remotely spectacular. If I can't sit in a balcony or at the window, sipping tea and basking in the view, my holiday is incomplete. There's a charm in waking up to see the city at a distance, belittled by the mountains. It truly makes you marvel at the splendour of mother nature and respect her even more. This hotel, where I stayed at, was located close to the Hadimba Devi temple and other Manali attractions but it's undisturbed by crowds. Of all the Manali hotels, make sure you find one with a view like this. It's a great place to sit when the Manali temperature dips. Just grab a blanket and some chai . Alt Life, Old Manali

Alt Life is a co-working space/ hostel located at Clubhouse road in Old Manali. They have both dorm rooms as well as private rooms overlooking the river and apple orchards. The dining area is designed to function as a co-working space. It has large windows overlooking the scenery to enjoy nature whilst working on your laptop. I especially enjoyed waking up to the sound of the river outside my balcony.

Manali Itinerary for 3 Days

There are so many beautiful places to visit in Manali, in addition to the sheer natural beauty all around. This suggested Manali travel guide for 3 days will help you cover all the sightseeing spots in Manali and give you ample time to enjoy the charm of Manali.

Day 1 - Old Manali and Local Sightseeing

Start day 1 of your Manali itinerary for 3 days by visiting all the local sightseeing spots in Manali.

Hadimba Devi Temple

Located in the heart of Manali, 2 km from the Mall Road, nestled between pine trees, the Hadimba Devi temple is an unconventionally architectured shrine dedicated to Hadimba Devi, the wife of Bhima and mother of Ghatothkach. The place is generally over-crowded but you can make a quick stop here since it's in the heart of Manali, close to most hotels.

There are some locals who offer fluffy rabbits for you to hold and take pictures with, at a minimal cost. I'm not sure how ethical their practice is or whether those bunnies are properly cared for so when you visit, make sure to ask the women to take good care of the rabbits!

Uphill, away from the crowded, packed streets of new Manali, on the outskirts, lies old Manali, 3 km from the main city. Giving off a hipster vibe with streets surrounded on both sides by souvenir shops selling hippie clothes and accessories, Old Manali is famous among backpackers, foreigners and youngsters. Backpacker hostels, Israeli food and pizza joints are what attract the young crowds to Old Manali. More than that, it's the tranquillity of sitting in a quiet hotel, away from the city, surrounded by hills and streams that draws one to Old Manali. While this is not a Manali attraction, it's a place to go for soul searching and cool vibes.

Manu Temple

Manu Temple is located right at the top of the hill at Old Manali. Keep walking through the lane lined up with shops and cafes until you reach the peaceful Manu temple. The temple doesn't see a whole lot of visitors as compared to Hadimba Devi temple, probably because of it's offbeat location in Old Manali. Nonetheless, you should definitely visit the Manu Temple in Old Manali and learn about its interesting history from a local.

Vashisht Village and Jogini Falls

Vashisht village is located 5 km from the city centre of Manali. In fact, the Vashisht hot springs are one of the most popular sightseeing places in Manali. Jogini falls is another popular sightseeing attraction in Manali located close to the Vashisht village. Although it's more popular among the youth, anyone can hike to the lower part of the waterfall. To reach Jogini falls, start at Vashisht village. Ask any local to point you in the correct direction. Keep walking until you start seeing a change of landscape. Keep going straight and you'll reach the falls after 10-15 minutes of walking.

Day 2 - Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley

On day 2 of your Manali itinerary for 3 days, take a cab or your vehicle up to Rohtang pass and then engage in adventure sports at Solang valley on the way back.

Rohtang Pass

A Manali travel guide is incomplete without mentioning this famous pass. Rohtang Pass, at a height of 13058 ft, connects Manali to Lahaul and Spiti Valley . The climb up to the pass offers views which will leave you dumbfounded. Rugged landscapes, grassy hills, sneaky little waterfalls and snow-capped mountains will accompany you throughout your journey. The picture changes every few minutes, each one more so mesmerising than the previous.

Keep in mind that a permit is required for visiting the pass. There are certain rules in place which can be viewed on the official website . There are 2 different types of permit - one for visiting the pass and returning back and then another one for crossing the pass to go to Lahaul Spiti. Make sure you obtain the right permit ahead of time. Do get some good sleep the previous night because you will have to leave early in the morning in order to reach Rohtang Pass. There are many vehicles lined up for the same and it can be a long and tiring journey. There are plenty of snack vendors selling hot maggi, omelette and tea along the way so you won't have to worry about breakfast. There are washrooms set-up at the check-point where your permit will be checked.

Solang Valley

Solang Valley is located at a distance of 14 km from Manali and is best visited while returning back from Rohtang pass. The valley is perfect for visiting during both summer and winter season due to its ideal location and landscape where a number of adventure activities take place.

Some of the adventure activities that take place here at paragliding, snowboarding (during winter), and zorbing, to name a few.

Day 3 - Take A Day Trip from Manali

On the last day of your Manali itinerary for 3 days, take a day trip to one of the many gorgeous places around Manali. While I strongly recommend taking a day trip to Naggar from Manali, you can even go to Kasol or to Manikaran. Read more about these places in the section below to decide for yourself.

Day Trips From Manali

Most of the sightseeing places in Manali can be covered within two days and thus if you have more than 2 days in Manali, then take a day trip to one (or more) of the places near Manali.

Kasol is a hippie paradise located just outside Manali. In fact, it's the ideal day trip from Manali. However, I highly recommend that you stay here a day or two just to soak in the good vibes (*wink*) and devour the delicious Israeli food.

Manikaran is another popular Manali attraction near Kasol. This place houses a Gurudwara (a place of worship for the Sikh community). There's world-famous afternoon langar where food is prepared by the lovely community to feed anyone who visits the Gurudwara . What makes this place unique is that the food isn't cooked using any traditional method. In fact, the food here is cooked using the hot water of the river flowing next to the Gurudwara . It's one of the most unique sights!

Naggar - Best Place to Visit near Manali

Naggar located 22 km from Manali, along the Beas river is an idyllic, ancient village to relax, enjoy a steaming hot cup of tea and soak in the mountain views before entering Manali.

There are buses that ply from Manali to Naggar on a regular interval. If you're driving from Dharamshala to Manali, you can easily make a pit stop at Naggar first before visiting Manali. Naggar has one main point of attraction which is the Naggar castle . The castle, made of wood and stone and displaying an impressive amalgamation of European and Himalayan architecture, functions as a hotel and an art gallery. Some of the best views of the Kullu valley are visible here. The Tripura Sundari temple and Krishna temple are some of the other popular attractions in Naggar.

Best Cafes in Manali

Not enough can be said about the cafes in Manali. While most of the best cafes in Manali are located within Old Manali, there are some really good cafes located near the mall road as well. Johnson Cafe is a well-known name among the popular cafes in Manali. A Manali travel guide would be incomplete without touching upon these cafes. Take a look at some of the best cafes in Manali:

People Art Cafe, Old Manali

People Art Cafe, located in Old Manali, is my go-to place for a late breakfast. The relaxing bohemian vibe and great music are fantastic accompaniments to the delicious food served here. The menu has a wide variety of breakfast combos , one of which can be seen in the picture above. A hearty breakfast of eggs, skillet potatoes, butter toast and tea or coffee only costs Rs 190. With these rates and stellar quality of food, this cafe is a big winner. Your Manali itinerary for 3 days would be incomplete if you didn't visit this cafe.

Cafe 1947, Old Manali

Cafe 1947, located right next to the bridge in Old Manali, is well-known in Manali for its pizzas . In fact, this cafe is one of the most popular cafes in Manali. Ask anyone for some of the best cafes in Manali and they'll definitely mention cafe 1947. And boy do they deliver! The pizzas here come with a nice crust, hearty toppings and the perfect amount of cheese. I'm extremely picky about the kind of pizzas I like and the one in cafe 1947 went in my good books. The thick crunchy fries were the added bonus.

Cafe Sunshine, Old Manali

Cafe Sunshine is the place to be if you want good vibes , live music and a great crowd. The food here is quite decent but it's the atmosphere during the weekend that attracts the crowds. It's not easy to find a single empty table here at night on the weekends. Another good thing about this cafe is the prompt service and short wait time. Definitely worth a visit during the weekends.

History of Manali :

Manali is named after the Hindu Lawgiver Manu. The name Manali is regarded as the derivative of ‘Manu-Alaya’ which literally means ‘the abode of Manu’. Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world. The valley is often referred to as the ‘Valley of the Gods’. Old Manali village has an ancient vibe to it and it also houses an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu.

Manali, which is famous for the apples it exports, did not originally have any apple trees. The first apple trees were introduced by the Britishers and the first apple orchard was set up by the British near Patlikuhl. To this day, apple—along with plum and pear—remain the best source of income for the majority of inhabitants. Both Rainbow and Brown Trout was also introduced into the rivers and streams of the area by the colonisers.

With the increase in disposable incomes and due to its scenic beauty, Manali tourism witnessed a surge in traffic. Geography and Landscape of Manali :

The geography of Manali is such as that it is located about at a distance of 40 km from Kullu in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The climate in Manali is predominantly cold during winters, and moderately cool during summers. The temperatures range from 4 °C to 26 °C over the year. The average temperature during summer is between 04 °C and 15 °C, and between −15 °C  and 05 °C in the winter. Monthly precipitation varies between 31 millimeter in November to 217 millimeter in July. In average, some 45 millimeters of precipitation is received during winter and spring months, increasing to some 115 millimeters in summer as the monsoon approaches. The average total annual precipitation is 1,363 millimeters. Snowfall often takes place between November end to early February. The weather in Manali is not stable.

How to reach Manali :

Joginder Nagar Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Manali and is connected with several important cities of the country. Besides this, the Kalka Railway Station, a terminal in the foot of Himachal heights, connects Manali to the major cities like New Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jaipur, Bhopal, Indore, Patna, Kanpur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, circuitously.

The nearest broad gauge station is Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab near the city of Nangal. It lies in Ropar district of Punjab. The station lies on the Ambala Cantt – Una route of Indian Railways. From here you can easily get buses for Manali.

Manali is connected to popular tourist destinations like Delhi, Shimla, Kullu and Leh by the means of an extensively laid roads. The twisting of the roads on the mountainous terrain of Manali provides an intense and a very fun experience.

Manali can be reached from Delhi by national highway NH 1 up to Ambala and from there NH 22 to Chandigarh and from there by national highway NH21 that passes through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and Kullu towns. The road distance from Chandigarh to Manali is 310 km (190 mi), and the total distance from Delhi to Manali is 570 km (350 mi). T he Manali Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The sanctuary starts about 2 km from Manali. A path from Manali log huts and Dhungri temple passes through dense Deodar, Kail, Horse chestnut, Walnut and Maple forests. Musk deer, Monal and Brown bear, Leopard and Snow leopards are some of the common animals seen here. Herds of Ibex are seen migrating in the glacier zone in summers.

Around 3 kilometers from Manali, across the Beas river is Vashist, a small village with natural sulphur springs. Vashisht, also boasts a pair of old stone temples, opposite each other above the main square. Dedicated to the local patron saint Vashista, the smaller of the two opens on to a partially covered courtyard, and is adorned with elaborate wood carving. The temple tanks are underground hot-water/sulfur springs. A bath in the water from these hot springs are able to cure all the skin ailments that people are suffering from.

Explore old Manali :

At a distance of 3 kilometers to the northwest of Manali is Old Manali, famous for its orchards and old guesthouses. Calm and serene surroundings coupled with the sound of Beas river is a very peaceful experience. There is ruined fort here by the name of Manaligarh. There is also the Manu Maharishi Temple, dedicated to sage Manu.

Visit the Monasteries :

Manali is known for its shiny gompas or Buddhist monasteries. It is maintained by donations from the local community and by sale of hand-woven carpets in the temple workshop.

Visit the Maa Shravani temple :

This temple is represented as KULDEVI of the kings of Kullu in early times and is worshipped as a manifestation of Durga, and image of the goddess is also enshrined here. The divinity is popularly worshipped throughout the region during the festivals and the Goddess is transported to Kullu to visit the Lord Raghunathji during Dussehra festival. As once described by a Buddhist monk who visited the place in 635 CE, Kullu is still a very fertile region surrounded by many mountains. Formed by the Beas River, this valley is a treasure of nature covered with tall pine and deodar trees. The valley is blessed with many apple orchards too. According to popular myths, it is said to have been named by Manu. When Manu visited the place during the great floods and in not succeeding to cross the Rohtang Pass, he is believed to have named the last settlement he came across as the ‘ Kulant Peeth ’, roughly translating to the ‘end of the world’. The name then became Kulut from which the present-day name Kullu seems to find its origins.

How To Reach

Kullu is believed to have had access from Shimla until it got its motorable road post-independence. Since then, travelling to Kullu has become somewhat of an easy affair.

The closest airport to Kullu is located in Bhuntar, where the Beas and the Parvati rivers meet. The airport is commonly known as the Kullu- Manali airport and lies at a distance of about 11 kilometres from Kullu town. There are flights to and from Chandigarh and Delhi on a regular basis.

Kullu doesn’t yet have a railway line. The closest railway line to Kullu lies in Joginder Nagar at about 100 kilometres from the town. The Joginder Nagar line is further connected to Pathankot through the Kangra Valley Line. Taking the railway route to Kullu can be very tedious and is not the best way to reach the valley town.

Kullu is connected to the national capital Delhi via NH1 and NH21. The roads are open and accessible almost all through the year. There are private taxi services from most major cities across northern India . The prices vary depending on the place of origin and type of service. Summer (March to June):

Monsoon (July to September):

Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh in the northern part of the country has become the most popular tourist destination of Himachal due to its easy approach after the opening of the Atal Tunnel , Rohtang. Thousands of tourists are visiting Lahaul Valley every day to enjoy its breathtaking beauty.

In 2022, as many as 6,22,988 vehicles carrying about 20 lakh tourists entered Lahaul valley via tunnel from Manali besides some tourists reaching here via Leh-Keylong and Kaza-Koksar road.

Lahaul Valley, which further has many small valleys, is home to the beautiful landscapes, towering peaks, deep valleys, hanging glaciers, rivers, monasteries, temples, a mix of Hindu-Buddhist cultures and winding roads. Lahaul and Spiti are two sub-divisions of Lahaul-Spiti district. Lahaul and Spiti are divided by the mighty Kunzum pass. However, jurisdiction of Spiti valley begins from Koksar, beyond Gramphu, but its first village is Losar, on the other side of the Kunzum pass. Keylong in Lahaul is the administrative headquarters of the district.

Lahaul-Spiti is the largest district of Himachal in terms of geographical area. Lahaul-Spiti is popularly known as mini- Ladakh for its Ladakh-like landscapes. Lahaul-Spiti is also known as the cold deserts of Himachal due to its high altitude barren lands and extremely cold temperature. The district is the coldest in Himachal, with temperature at many places plunging below minus 25 degrees Celsius in winter season. Spiti is colder than Lahaul but many places of Lahaul also record below minus 20 degrees C of temperature.

How to reach Lahaul Valley

Lahaul valley is just 33 km from Manali along the Manali-Leh highway. The valley starts from the northern end of the Atal tunnel. Atal tunnel is the bridge between Manali and Lahaul. Before tunnel, Lahaul was reachable via Rohtang pass. Rohtang top, 51 km from Manali, is the boundary of Manali and Lahaul valley. District headquarter Keylong is 72km from Manali. Sarchu is the last point of Lahaul on the Manali-Leh highway.

Is Lahaul Valley safe for tourists

Similar to other parts of Himachal, Lahaul valley is extremely safe for tourists. The residents are tourist-friendly and the region has never witnessed militancy or other terror activities. The valley is far away from the border area. However, travel to Lahaul valley sometimes become risky after snowfall due to risk of avalanches and slippery road conditions. Is permit required to visit Lahaul Valley

No, there is no need to obtain any kind of permit or pass to visit Lahaul valley via Atal tunnel. However, Kullu administration sometimes asks tourists to obtain a permit to use the Rohtang pass highway. National Green Tribunal has ordered Himachal government to limit the number of vehicles going to Rohtang pass but there is no limit to go beyond Rohtang pass. Lahaul administration was mulling imposing green tax on vehicles entering the valley but the proposal is still under consideration.

Lahaul’s Sissu to remain closed for 50 days to maintain “divine silence”

The gram panchayat of Sissu, the main tourist destination of Lahaul valley at the northern end of Atal tunnel, has decided not to welcome tourists in the panchayat for the next 50 days so that they could perform different religious activities without noise.

The panchayat passed a resolution that hotels, homestays and guesthouses will not take booking starting from January 10 upto to February 28. Sissu being the most popular tourist spot which is visited by lakhs of tourists every year, the residents have decided not to offer any services like eateries, tea, photography or other tourism-related services to discourage tourists from visiting the place. The panchayat has requested the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, SDM and other panchayat representatives of the district to cooperate them.

Sissu panchayat president Rajeev said, “Raja Ghepan committee, Devi Boti committee, Labrang gompa committee, all the youth and women clubs have decided to shut all tourism activities from Tuesday onwards. We will start worships of all the deities from Tuesday. Also, the popular Halda festival will start on January 15, followed by Dron and Puna festivals which are celebrated in the new year. We have to maintain silence in the region. So, not only villages but also the tourist spots of Sissu lake, nursery and helipad need to go silent. We have also requested the district administration to help us remain tourist-free for some days.”

He said tourists will have some inconvenience for some days but nothing is more important than religion and deities. He said there should not be much impact on tourism as these places generally remain disconnected for general movement after snowfall. The residents will return to normal activities, farm works and businesses only after 50 days.

Sissu, home to God Raja Ghepan, the most revered deity of Lahaul valley, has become the main tourist spot as all tourists visiting Atal tunnel take a small or night halt here. A large number of tourism activities, hotels and homestays have emerged here. The economy of the region has witnessed a boom in recent years due to tourism. The residents say, they have unwavering faith in their deities and will not compromise with religious activities at any cost.

Tourists throng Lahaul to enjoy snow

As snow in most of the tourist places in Himachal has disappeared due to prevailing dry weather conditions, tourists have thronged Lahaul valley to enjoy the snow and ice these days.

Hundreds of tourists are visiting Lahaul valley every day only to see snow. Tourists are enjoying snow near the Atal tunnel at its north portal and Sissu. With the temperature in the valley remaining many notches below freezing point, the snow is melting very slowly. Tourists are not allowed to go to the higher areas and towards Marhi and Rohtang in Manali, so they are heading to Lahaul valley.

“As soon as we came out of the Atal tunnel, we were greeted by the white valley with snow everywhere. This transformation in landscape is amazing. We have come to Himachal only to see the snow,” Ashutosh Jain, a tourist from Madhya Pradesh, told Discover Kullu Manali. He added that he and his friends wanted to see the snowfall but the weather was not happy with them. “We are still happy to see the snow,” he said.

Another tourist from Delhi, Kavita, said she was first disappointed after she did not see snow at Manali and Solang valley. “Our travel agent had told us that we can see snow in Manali. Later he arranged a taxi to Atal tunnel and we are here. We enjoyed the whole day playing with snow. We took hundreds of photographs and make many videos. Now our clothes are all wet and we are shivering with cold,” he said.

Snow has melted on the sunny sides of Lahaul but it is still available on the shady sides of the mountains. There is a lot more snow at Rohtang and beyond Darcha but tourists are not allowed to visit these places due to safety reasons.

Even more tourists are expected to visit Lahaul valley on December 4 when World Ice Skating Day is being celebrated at Sissu. Many winter sports activities will be held here.

Himachal is expected to witness peak tourist season from December 20 to January 1 as lakhs of tourists will be heading to the hill stations for Christmas and New Year celebrations. 17 lakh tourists enter Lahaul valley via Atal tunnel in 15 months

Atal tunnel has proved to be a major attraction as more than 17 lakh tourists have entered the Lahaul valley via tunnel in 15 months despite Covid-19 pandemic.

Tribal development minister Ram Lal Markanda said tribal Lahaul valley and Atal tunnel have become popular among tourists. He said since it’s inauguration on October 3, 2020, the tunnel has witnessed movement of over 17 lakh tourists.

“The tunnel has become a boon for both Manali and Lahaul. Some tourists visit only the tunnel and others visit Lahaul valley also. But all tourists stay in Manali. The amazing tunnel at altitude of 10,000ft, culture of Lahaul and availability of snow are attracting tourists in large numbers,” he said while attending the closing ceremony of Himachal Ski and Snowboard Championship at Solang valley here.

He added that winter sports are also attracting more and more tourists to the state and national ski and snowboard competition will be organised in Lahaul valley this season. “We successfully organised national women ice hockey championship at Spiti. Ice skating, ice climbing, skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports are forcing tourists to visit the state. We have a large number of natural slopes in Lahaul valley where we shall organise national events this year. Soon we shall host international skiing and snowboarding events on the vast slopes of Lahaul,” Markanda said.

Atal tunnel has proved to be the top tourist destination of Himachal. The tunnel was inaugurated during pandemic. 17 lakh tourists managed to visit the tunnel and Lahaul while there were so many restrictions on tourism. Officials said the tunnel remained closed for tourists most days in two consecutive winter seasons due to heavy snowfall and avalanche warnings. Had the road to the tunnel remained open even in winter, the number of tourists visiting the tunnel could have crossed the 25 lakh mark.

Atal tunnel is closed for tourists for many days now after heavy snowfall last week. According to Lahaul-Spiti police, Manali-Lahaul road via Atal tunnel is open only for emergency vehicles. Tourists are not allowed as the road is slippery and there are chances of avalanches at many places. Once the tunnel is declared open, it will again be crowded by tourists.

7,484 vehicles use Atal tunnel in a day, sets new record

A record-high number of vehicles used Atal tunnel in a single day on Saturday with 7,484 vehicles entering and exiting the Atal tunnel to travel between Manali and Lahaul valley.

7,384 was the highest number of vehicles that had used the tunnel on July 5 earlier this year. Breaking the previous records, 7,484 vehicles used the tunnel on Saturday. A total of 3,790 vehicles came from Manali to Lahaul while 3,694 vehicles traversed the tunnel from Lahaul towards Manali between 8am and 8pm.

Lahaul-Spiti superintendent of police Manav Verma said this is the highest number of vehicles that entered and exited the tunnel in a single day since the tunnel was dedicated to the nation. “Majority of vehicles belong to tourists,” he said.

On average, 4,000 vehicles use the tunnel every day. July 2021 witnessed the highest ever number of vehicles using the tunnel when 1,22,090 vehicles entered and exited the tunnel from both ends. Over 90 per cent of vehicles reach the tunnel for tourism purposes while other vehicles belonging to local residents and traders.

Atal tunnel has become the major tourist attraction after PM Narendra Modi inaugurated it on October 3 last year. All the tourists visiting Manali want to see this engineering marvel. Lahaul-Spiti becoming popular snow point after travel to Rohtang became difficult following many restrictions also popularised the tunnel.

SADA barrier fee to enter Lahaul

Visiting Lahaul valley is going to cost more as all the vehicles registered outside Himachal will have to pay a certain fees to enter the valley as local administration has established a barrier at Sissu village.

A barrier under the Special Area Development Authority (SADA) has been established between Sissu village and Atal tunnel. While vehicles wearing Himachal registration number are exempted from payment of fee, all the vehicles, including trucks, buses and motorbikes are being charged SADA fee.

The bikes are being charged Rs 50 while cars are being charged Rs 200 to enter Lahaul. The SUVs and MUVs are paying Rs 300 and buses and trucks are paying Rs 500 as entry fee. Not only Lahaul, but vehicles going towards Leh, Pangi and Kishtwar via this route will also have to pay the fees.

Sub-divisional magistrate at Keylong Priya Nagta said the amount collected from SADA barrier fee will be spent on development of the Lahaul. “Local and all vehicles wearing Himachali registration number will not pay this fees. There is provision of a pass for vehicles that use this route frequently,” she said.

Tourists visiting Atal tunnel will not be paying this fee but they will be stopped at barrier beyond the north portal of the tunnel if they wish to go to Sissu, Keylong, Udaipur, Ladakh or other areas beyond. The tourist footfall at Sissu, 7km beyond Atal tunnel, is expected to decrease due to the barrier as many tourists will prefer taking a u-turn after visiting the tunnel. However, those who wish to go beyond Sissu will have no problem in payment of the fee.

Lahaul-Spiti administration had submitted a proposal before Himachal government to establish a barrier beyond Atal tunnel long back as tourist footfall in the valley has increased manifolds. According to officials, the money collected from the vehicles will be spent on environmental compensation activities and development of infrastructure.

Tourist crowd rises three times in Lahaul in two years

Lahaul valley of Himachal, which is known for its glaciers, rivers, tribal culture, sparse population and peaceful environment, has also been flooded with tourist crowd and the valley know echo with mind-boggling noise of vehicles.

The tourist footfall in the valley has increased three times in two years. While 20,494 vehicles, mostly tourist vehicles, had entered and exited the valley in June 2019, the number of vehicles has increased to 57,494 in 2021. This data clearly shows how the serene valley has become popular among tourists. June is the month when Himachal witnesses the most number of tourists. According to sources, the number of tourists entering Lahaul valley is expected to be even more in July 2021.

This is for the first time that residents have seen such a large number of vehicles in Lahaul. People used to see mostly known vehicles and local buses. Sometimes one vehicle was seen on road after minutes of hour. The roads now remain busy most of the time with long queue of vehicles. According to officials, Atal tunnel has provided easy access to the valley and tourists want to explore least seen places.

“The number of vehicles entering and exiting Lahaul in June month has reached from 20,494 in 2019 to 57,494 in 2021. The data for June 2020 is not considered due to lockdown. This figure clearly shows how traffic movement in Lahaul has increased after Atal tunnel,” Lahaul-Spiti superintendent of police Manav Verma said.

While increased tourist footfall has brought livelihood opportunities for the tribals, it has also brought many new challenges which were not faced before. Besides garbage collection and disposal, traffic management has become a major challenge, especially between Atal tunnel and Sissu. Parking limitations, traffic violations and keeping traffic moving are the new tasks for the district police.

The SP said the district police is focusing on traffic management, road safety and smooth movement of the traffic. “A large number of vehicles, especially tourist vehicles, are entering the district every day. Our main task is not letting traffic jam. So far we have succeeded in our task,” he added.

The highways in the valley are double-laned and properly maintained. Despite this the roads remain very busy. Now mischievous tourists, whom district police call hooligans, are another challenge to deal with.

Manav adds, “With rise in tourist inflow, tourism hooliganism is also on the rise. We are witnessing many such cases, especially drunken hooliganism in the night time. Drinking and dancing in public places is making local population feel uncomfortable. Local residents have been requested to report such incidents to the police along with number of the vehicles involved. Residents are also requested not to take law into their own hands. Tourists not wearing face mask is also matter of concern. We are trying to handle all situations professionally.”

HP govt to woo filmmakers to “new Switzerland”

The tempting snow-bound locations of Lahaul valley of Himachal will soon become the first choice of filmmakers who need not visit Switzerland or other European nations for shooting, cabinet minister Ram Lal Markanda said.

In an effort to woo the Bollywood filmmakers, the government is planning to develop infrastructure in Lahaul keeping in view the need of the shooting units. Tribal development minister Ram Lal Markanda with help of Lahaul-Spiti administration has prepared a detailed plan for the purpose. According to Markanda, chief minister is also keen to develop the valley as shooting hub of the country besides tourism.

“Bollywood and other film shooting units need not visit Switzerland or other European nations in search of snow-clad mountains and other beautiful geographical features as same thing is available in Lahaul valley. The only problem is with weak infrastructure including hotels, connectivity, local support and many other things which we are working on. The units can now reach the valley easily via Atal tunnel. Road connectivity is being improved. Helicopter services are available here. Luxury hotels in the valley will become reality soon,” he said.

Markanda added that he recently met with the chief minister and talked about some points on attracting shooting units. “CM is himself interested in making things easier for shooting units. We shall help filmmakers in obtaining all required permissions easily and conveniently. We have many locations which are more beautiful than Switzerland. The jaw dropping locations will make movies lively,” he added.

For the first time ever, at least half-dozen film units have completed shooting in the different locations of Lahaul valley this winter season. Many more units have planned to visit the valley in coming days. Local film coordinators are suggesting Bollywood and other film makers to shot some scenes in Lahaul which have never been seen in the films.

Government, especially local minister and administration, who are trying various tactics for tourism promotion in the valley, now look at Bollywood for tourism promotion. Bollywood movies in the past promoted tourism in Manali, Kashmir and Ladakh in a short time period. Markanda believes the movies shot in valley will not only promote tourism but also will bring employment for local residents.

Soon, green fee to enter Lahaul valley

Tourists entering Lahaul valley will have to pay a green tax soon in the future as Lahaul-Spiti administration is planning to impose environmental compensation on the visitors to balance the tourism and environment.

The administration has sent a proposal of charging a green fee to the state government. Once approved, the visitors will have to pay the fees as green cess. The amount collected from the visitors will be spent on greenery, cleanliness, and development work in the villages.

Thousands of vehicles carrying thousands of tourists are expected to enter Lahaul valley every day. Besides bringing prosperity to the valley, Lahaul at an average altitude of 10,000ft will witness littering and sound and air pollution. The clean air and waters of the valley will start polluting. To deal with the situation, the administration has started framing various policies. The green cess collected from the visitors can be used in the restoration of the damages to the environment.

The administration is working hard on solid waste management. Littering by roadsides, temples, picnic spots, riversides, and main attractions will be common in Lahaul as it is seen in other hill stations. The administration has planned to give jute bags to all the tourist vehicles entering the valley so that tourists could store their trash in the bag and deposit it at the designated area before leaving the valley.

Manali also charges green fees from all the non-Himachal registered vehicles before entering the town. The environment compensation charges are imposed on vehicles going towards Rohtang pass for tourism purposes. So far there is no toll or any arrangement of a collection of any kind of tax on Manali-Leh highway via Atal tunnel. If the Himachal government gives its nod, the tourists moving on this highway may have to pay the fees.

Meanwhile, Lahaul faces an acute shortage of drinking water in the winter season when all water sources and pipes get freeze in extremely cold weather. Stating that 24 hours water supply is mandatory for the boom in winter tourism, the administration is also working on providing all households and tourism units with running water.

Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Pankaj Rai was quoted as saying, “The proposal to impose green cess has been sent to the state government. We are working on providing water to Keylong 24 hours a day on a pilot project. The facility will be provided in other areas in a phased manner.”

Solid waste management now part of school curriculum in Lahaul-Spiti

The tribal students of Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal will now learn solid waste management in their schools as district administration has started the subject as part of curriculum in some schools on pilot basis.

The district, which has been witnessing a sudden surge in tourist footfall and related challenges including waste management, has discovered this unique idea to sensitise the residents. Initially, the solid waste management subject has been introduced in a few government primary schools and remaining schools will also be brought under its purview very soon. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner Pankaj Rai on Monday inaugurated the inclusion of this subject in school curriculum from Government Primary School, Keylong-1.

“Education on solid waste management is need of hour. It has been started in a few schools on pilot basis. The students will learn waste management besides cleanliness in schools and will spread awareness at home, villages and society,” the DC said.

He added that Lahaul will face challenges regarding waste management in the future as increasing tourism activities, setting up more commercial establishments and increasing floating population will contribute to producing more waste. “This is a part of our endeavours in preparing district for management of solid waste and making residents more aware. Students are the best carriers of good messages and they execute things very efficiently. They care for beauty and cleanliness of their areas. To fulfill the purpose of implementing regular solid waste management policy and to spread awareness among people, this subject has been included in the school curriculum,” he added.

The subject will be taught to both small and senior students informally so that they take interest in it. Students will be shown various videos, will be taught on different topics and educational programmes will be organised for them. People of Lahaul have been using liquid waste in their fields as manure for a long time.

Lahaul-Spiti administration has signed a MoU with IIT Delhi for arrangements of solid waste collection, management and its disposal in entire Lahaul.

Now head to Lahaul valley for free skiing courses

For the first time ever, skiing courses are being organised for winter sports lovers from any part of the country free of cost at Trilokinath slopes of Lahaul valley which remains covered with thick blanket of snow throughout winter season.

The first basic course was inaugurated on Thursday with participation of 30 tribals from the valley. Many more youths have applied for the courses. Unfortunately, people from outside Lahaul could not apply for free basic course as Manali-Atal tunnel-Lahaul road is closed for outsiders. People with valid reason and with four-wheel-drive vehicles are being allowed to enter the valley. So, only local youths could participate in the course. Organisers believe people from other parts could participate in February if road to valley remains open.

The course is being organised by Winter Sports Club Shakoli in association with Saat Dhara Club Hinsa. As Lahaul valley is connected with Manali via Atal tunnel and most of the internal roads of Lahaul are open, local clubs are planning similar course and tournaments on the regular basis.

Jai Ram Thakur, the coordinator of the skiing courses, said trained skiers Duni Thakur and Rohit Lopa are the instructors and the first course was inaugurated by Lama Hinshey, priest of Trilokinath temple and Dr Vishesh Thakur. “The courses are free of cost. We have 30 participants in the first eight-day basic course. 10 more persons have enrolled themselves for the course on Thursday and they will join from Friday. The courses will continue in the winter season. Unfortunately youths from far away places may not make it to reach here due to limited connectivity,” he said.

The local clubs have limited number of skiing kits which was forcing them to restrict the number of participants at a time. The vast slopes and open area had the capacity to accommodate hundreds of skiers at a time. The skiers from the valley were reaching slopes in morning time and were returning home in the evening. The organisers say if state or national clubs collaborate with them and they get government assistance, they can arrange for accommodation for skiiers at Trilokinath and can organise winter sports tournaments besides professional skiing courses.

Thakur said winter season in Lahaul is longer than other parts of the state and the valley can become winter sports hub of the country due to its vast and amazing natural slopes. “The quality of snow in Lahaul is perfect for skiing due to cold weather. The natural slope of Trilokinath is over 2km in length. All it needs is little infrastructure improvement. Skiers say these are the best available slopes of the country. Nobody paid attention to these slopes,” he added.

Meanwhile, state-level skiing and snowboarding championships will start at Solang slopes after snowfall. The organisers are waiting for snowfall as slopes have almost no snow. There is a prediction of heavy snowfall on January 23 and 24. Himachal Pradesh Winter Games Association is planning to organise event after this spell of snowfall.

Tourism plan from Lahaul valley

To prevent Lahaul valley from becoming another Rohtang pass, which faced environment degradation with unplanned tourism, the Lahaul-Spiti administration is preparing to protect its environment, natural beauty and precious heritage from 5,000 tourist vehicles expected to enter valley each day.

Lahaul is already witnessing the impact of the sudden surge in tourism activities after opening of the Atal tunnel as tourists equal to its population are entering the valley every week. According to officials, nearly 1,500 vehicles are entering Lahaul on the weekend. The valley will host record number of tourists in the summer season after April. The administration has calculated the approximate number of tourist vehicles entering Lahaul every day to be nearly 5,000 in the peak summer tourist season.

Having calculated the impact of tourism on the local heritage and ecologically fragile valley, the Lahaul-Spiti administration has planned to form a Lahaul Environment, Heritage Conservation and Beautification Society (LEHCBS). The top officials of the district under chairmanship of deputy commissioner Pankaj Rai held a meeting to finalise the outline of the society on Wednesday.

“We are developing a sustainable tourism plan for the district so that boom in tourism does not come at the cost of environment and the rich heritage of the valley. The outline of the society has been prepared in presence of officials and panchayat representatives. We also discussed on the development of the basic needs for cleanliness, beautification, environment protection and conservation of local culture and heritage,” the DC said.

Thousands of tourists are reaching Lahaul even in winter during lean season. Hundreds of vehicles are entering Lahaul from Atal tunnel every day. Lahaul valley for the first time has witnessed traffic jams and long queues at its popular temples. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming summer season. The administration has sought opinion from intellectuals, retired officials and public so that sustainable development of the tourism infrastructure could be done after forming LEHCBS.

Presently, agriculture is the main source of livelihood in Lahaul valley which is famous for its seed potato, peas and other vegetables. Tourism is expected to bring about a revolution in the valley which has a limited number of hotels, guesthouses and homestays. A large number of homestays and camping sites have come up in the valley in recent times. The government is encouraging local youth to build hotels under different government schemes. For now, tourists are returning back to Manali after visiting Lahaul in a day.

Tourists celebrate White Christmas in Lahaul valley

Although no snowfall on Christmas Day disappointed tourists in Himachal Pradesh, thousands of tourists still celebrated White Christmas on thick blanket of snow in Lahaul valley after traversing Atal tunnel on Friday.

All the tourist destinations of Himachal have witnessed a sudden surge in tourist inflow during Christmas and New Year week. While most hotels in Shimla are fully occupied with tourists from neighbouring states, the average hotel occupancy in Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie is above 60 per cent. In Manali, tourist crowd slowed down the traffic movement. Some places even saw minor traffic jams. Hundreds of tourist vehicles went to Atal tunnel and Lahaul valley as every tourist wanted to see snow on Christmas Day.

According to official sources, as many as 1,550 tourist vehicles entered the Lahaul valley via Atal tunnel on the Christmas Day.

A tourist from Ghaziabad Urvashi Dixit said, “I was upset that we could not see snowfall. I stopped complaining when we crossed the Atal tunnel and reached Lahaul valley completely covered with white blanket. We spent the whole day playing with snow. Now I’m happy that I saw snow on Christmas Day.”

Lahaul-Spiti administration has arranged parking for 2,000 vehicles at Sissu helipad, Gufa hotel and some other places. The 5km stretch from the tunnel and Sissu in Lahaul was fully occupied by tourists from all parts of the country. Tourists were playing with snow along the roadsides and on the right bank of the Chandra river. Tourists were hurling snow at each other and some were busy making the snowmen.

“This is disappointing that we could not see Rohtang pass. But this area near Atal tunnel is extremely beautiful and a perfect place to celebrate Christmas Day with family,” another tourist from Gujarat Bhagesh said. He adds, “Everything is covered with pure white snow. We shall feel luckier if we see snowfall in the news two-three days.”

Tourist destinations of Himachal shall remain full of hustle bustle till New Year. Tourists are anxiously waiting for snowfall. The tourist inflow is expected to decrease suddenly after January 2. Every year a large number of tourists visit Himachal with expectation of watching snowfall on Christmas and New Year. Fortunately, tourists can see snow near Manali. And lucky tourists can see fresh snowfall on December 27 and 28 as met office has predicted snowfall in the higher regions.

Lahaul also opens for tourists without restrictions

Lahaul valley, the fastest growing tourist destination of Himachal on the opposite side of Atal tunnel, which was shaken by Covid-19 cases, has opened for tourists without the need of undergoing rapid antigen test (RAT) at its entry points.

Believing that requirement of antigen test for Covid-19 before entering Lahaul was discouraging tourists from visiting the valley, Lahaul Hoteliers Association members on Monday met with the deputy commissioner to let tourists enter without any formality. Many tourists were returning back from Atal tunnel as they were being asked to undergo Covid-19 test at Sissu. Tourism season in Lahaul is very short due to extreme weather conditions. So hoteliers requested the administration to create a tourist-friendly environment.

Association president Bir Singh said, “Tourists are hesitating to visit Lahaul only because of the need of RAT before entering the valley. We requested DC to lift this requirement in the interest of residents who are largely dependent on tourism. DC understood our problem and removed the requirement of the antigen test. Now tourists can visit us freely similar to other parts of Himachal.”

DC told the hoteliers that health department will conduct regular checkup of the staff in the hotels and directed hoteliers to strictly follow the Covid-19 safety protocols.

Lahaul Hoteliers Association general secretary Tashi Barongpa said now tourists can visit Baralacha and Shinkula pass and return back to Lahaul without any restriction. “Tourists staying in Lahaul have multiple options to see snow. They can visit Baralacha, Shinkula or Rohtang for snow and can return back in few hours. All hotels, guesthouses, and homestays in the valley are now open. We are doing all possible to woo the tourists. Hopefully, we shall get good guests in next few months.”

One of the most popular hill stations in India, Manali is a amidst the mountain slopes, with spell-binding views, charming streams, fairy-tale-like fog surrounding little hidden cottages and a lingering scent of pines and freshness. The heavy influx of tourists has led to the exploitation of Manali as a tourist destination, though the  surrounding areas are still relatively untouched. Nevertheless, this is one place that should definitely be on your bucket list.

Solang Valley – Solang Valley is quiet and is best approached by road. The drive up to Solang is extremely picturesque. Once you are there, try out some Chinese food from the local roadside shacks, and enjoy the views.

In winter, the mountains at the Rohtang Pass are completely covered in snow and it is impossible to get there. Hence, the pass remains closed during winters (from October) and generally opens again in May.

Naggar Castle - Located in Naggar Town, amidst breathtaking forested hills, the Naggar Castle is a magnificent historical edifice. Once the residence of Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu, this castle is an amalgamation of European and Himalayan architecture. Fireplaces, fitting staircases, and magnificent stone and wood works grace the castle's interiors.

Manu Temple – this religious edifice is visited by countless devotees every year. Legends have it that Manu saved the holy Vedas and the seven sages from the great flood and subsequently made Manali his home. A visit to this revered temple will definitely leave you mentally and spiritually rejuvenated.

Trekking – Manali is an absolute delight for adventurers looking to take on the jagged hills. A great base camp for treks, Manali’s Mountaineering Institute offers several types of high altitude hiking and rock climbing opportunities. Yoga-Trekking is another unique concept which combines spiritual wellness with physical well-being and has become a rage among both adventure and spirituality seekers.

Skiing – A thrill for adventure lovers while touring Manali, as they can indulge in some high adrenaline skiing sessions in the snow-clad mountains that surround the hill station. Want something even more thrilling? Go for heli-skiing or yak-skiing to make your experience unforgettable.

Café 1947 – This vintage and traditional Italian café hails to be the first music café in Manali and is located on the banks of the River Manalsu. Relish your meal, read a book, play your favourite tunes or even start up an impromptu gig, Café 1947 will surely be a part of some of your best moments in Manali.         

Dylan’s Toasted Roaster – Originally known as Double Vision, the café had a wall dedicated to Bob Dylan’s portrait. Bob Dylan’s fans and music lovers loved it so much that they coined a new name for the café and hence it was called the Dylan’s Toasted and Roasted.

Khyber – A multi-cuisine restaurant, Khyber serves delectable Chinese, Continental, Indian and Mughlai cuisines. Drinks are reasonably priced, and the booths are a good place to huddle.

Johnson’s Bar and Restaurant – Johnson's Bar & Restaurant is a charming Italian joint in Manali. The restaurant boasts of a talented Italian chef, good food and a well-stocked bar that serves a good selection of wines, liquors, exotic cocktails and shooters.

Whether to escape from blistering heat or enjoy the white winters, here's a monthly breakup of Manali's climatic conditions so that you can plan accordingly:

September to February – The monsoons draw to an end in September and winter starts setting in from October. The temperature in winter months can go down to -1 °C, so make sure you carry enough woollens to keep yourself warm.

December end to January – a time to enjoy snowfall and the spectacular scenic white views of the surrounding mountains, making it a favourite with the honeymooners. This is the ideal time for adventure enthusiasts who want to go skiing.

March to June –  Summer steps in from March but the weather is still pleasant. The temperatures during these summer months usually vary between 10°C to 25°C, so you might still need light woollens during the night. This is the perfect time to indulge in outdoor activities such as paragliding, rafting, trekking and mountain adventures in the Solang Valley. This is also the time when the region’s flora is in full bloom lending it the most pristine natural beauty.

July to August –  Monsoons in Manali can be tricky as the region experiences heavy rainfall, which can also sometimes lead to landslides. But considering a lot of tourists don’t prefer to travel during this time, the prices of hotels tend to drop.

How to Reach

By Air – The nearest airport is at Bhuntar, located approximately 50 kilometres away from Manali. Domestic flights connect Bhuntar with Delhi and Chandigarh. Once at the airport, you can take a pre-paid taxi to Manali. However, owing to weather conditions, flights are not the most reliable option for getting to or out of Manali.

By Bus – Manali is very well-connected to important tourist destinations like Leh, Shimla, Kullu, Dharamshala and New Delhi by means of a network of state-run as well as private buses. The bus journey from Delhi to Manali is 550 kilometres, and it is advisable to book your tickets in the air-conditioned Volvo coaches, as the buses are more comfortable than ordinary ones, keeping in mind the long distance of the journey.

By Road/ Self Drive – The drive up to Manali is simply breath-taking! You can catch scenic glimpses of the adjoining mountains and valleys from almost every turn that the twisty uphill road throws you. Though a lot of tourists prefer a self-drive up to Manali, it is advisable to hire a taxi in case you are not comfortable with driving in mountainous regions.
