According to legend, kissing the Blarney Stone upside down will give you the “gift of eloquence and persuasiveness”. Although there are many stories about the origins of the Blarney Stone, it’s believed to be a piece of limestone that was originally part of the walls of the castle.

#12 – Guided Climb of Ireland’s Tallest Mountain – Carrauntoohil

Carrauntoohill

The hike up to Carrauntoohil is a bit challenging (it takes 6-7 hours to complete) and can be a bit treacherous at parts, which is why taking a guide for the climb is the smartest decision. Plus, the guide shares a wealth of historical, geological, and natural history along the way.

#13 – Killarney Lakes Boat Tour for Cyclists

riding a bike during spring

This is a fun way to explore the Gap of Dunloe for those that are into cycling. It’s a fun 11km route, but meant more for experienced cyclists because of its steep uphill and downhill sections and tight corners.

The 1.5-hour boat ride that includes commentary on all of the local myths, legends, and history of the area is always a highlight of this tour.

Our tour guide, Tony, was an absolute gem – his passion for Irish history and culture was contagious, and his insightful commentary enriched every stop along the way. The itinerary was brilliantly crafted, striking a perfect balance between iconic landmarks like the Cliffs of Moher and hidden treasures like the quaint villages of County Kerry. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of activities included, from whiskey tastings to traditional music sessions, each offering a unique glimpse into Ireland's rich heritage. Hotels were top-notch and centrally located too adding an extra layer of charm to our journey. Traveling in a small group allowed for personalized attention and a tight-knit camaraderie among fellow travelers, making each day feel like an adventure with friends. Kudos to the tour company for seamless logistics and comfortable transportation. We felt safe and well taken care of throughout the experience. From the rugged beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way to the mystical landscapes of Connemara, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. This tour exceeded all expectations and left us with memories and new found friendships to last a lifetime. Without hesitation, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable journey through the heart of Ireland. Read more Written February 15, 2024

We asked for more “off the beaten path” as we had done last year, and even more was added for our 6 night 7 day adventure. We took in a large portion of the north half of The Wild Atlantic Way. Stunning coastal and valley views as well as interesting points of interest. Again, great lodging locations, for evenings out. Another forever memorable trip !! Read more Written November 10, 2023

We did a private tour from Cork to the Cliffs of Moher and from start to finish, it was a wonderful experience and the views were amazing! I initially requested info through the online form, and Cathy responded quickly and with a thorough response including all booking details. I booked immediately - it was so easy! The day of our tour, Tony was waiting for us when we walked out of our hotel a few minutes early. The car was clean, comfortable, roomy and he even had a bottle of water for each of us. Tony was so friendly and knowledgeable and just a joy to spend the day with. Unfortunately, it rained most of the day but Tony diligently kept an eye on the weather and stopped for an early lunch for us to wait on the weather to clear, and it did. This allowed him to get us to the Cliffs at the perfect time for some amazing views! He even got us to a quieter, less commercial entrance too! He patiently waited while we explored and made sure we knew to take our time, as long as we wanted. We enjoyed for awhile until the wind picked up and rain began again, and before we were even down the mountain road, the fog rolled in and the view would have been diminished. He had a few other stops along the way home and each one was great! All in all, it was an absolutely wonderful day! I highly recommend MunsterBus for your tours, and Tony was the best! We will definitely use MunsterBus again and ask for Tony on our next tour as well! Read more Written October 13, 2023

Not only was he knowledgeable about Ireland, he quite often took us off the main roads and let us see more of the real Ireland, not just the tourist spots. The van was comfortable and all the hotels were top notch with great locations. He quickly got to know us and figured out just what spots we'd like the best. Took our grown boys with us to explore a bit of our Irish heritage and we loved Ireland more than we could have imagined. Using a private tour group driver was the way to do it. Tony, our driver, took care of the car hassle so that we could spend more time exploring & sightseeing. And what sights did we see! We covered all of southern Ireland in 6 days. It can be done, although I will say that we had to move hotels about every night. That was the only thing I might change on our return. Each of us had a different favorite city (and castle), which is great when we talk about our trip. What we all loved was experiencing was the local music at night. Seek it out. It will be worth if, even if you're exhausted from the fantastic days of touring. We can't wait to return to Ireland! Read more Written May 27, 2023

"Our 2-Day Rail Tour WAS 1st Class!"

May 2019 by DWS-Toronto

killarney to blarney castle tour

We booked a 2-day rail tour to Cork and the Ring of Kerry when we could not fit a longer trip to the south of Ireland into our schedule. We did not need to worry as they run these rail tours daily out of Dublin. It was spectacular! First Class service; first class tour guide; first-class hotel at the Killarney Hotel overnight. And they made sure we got safely back to Dublin at the end of our tour. When they advertise as "first class" they meant it and they delivered as promised. If we ever get to return to Ireland, we will be sure to book their tours as they run tours all over Ireland from Dublin. We are not alone in our evaluation of their service as others whom we met voiced the same admiration and approval for their tours.

" A great way to see different parts of Ireland"

Blarney Castle

This tour is a great way to see different parts of Ireland and learn a little history along the way! Our tour guide, Jonathan was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to get to know each person on the tour and their ancestry. He also took the time to make a reservation for our entire tour to go out to dinner together in Killarney. During the tour, we saw spectacular views and got to explore different cities. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in exploring Ireland!

Check-in is 20 minutes prior to Train Departure Time.

Check-in beside the Customer Service Desk at Heuston Station where our representative will be waiting for you in their bright yellow jacket!

Check-in for 07:00 departure from Dublin Heuston Station.

Your departure station, Dublin Heuston, was opened in 1844 as the headquarters of the Great Southern & Western Railway and is now the official principal station of Iarnród Éireann – Ireland’s national railway company.

As your train departs, we travel in a south westerly direction, passing Inchicore, railway engineering works and then some of Dublin’s western suburbs – soon we are in the lush fertile countryside of County Kildare, Ireland’s Kentucky. Look out for the many stud farms near the track. The train passes through the town of Newbridge, home to the famous Newbridge Silverware.

We now enter the Curragh of Kildare, which soon comes into view on both sides of the line. The Curragh (pronounced: Curra) is famous for its racecourse, home of the Irish Derby. At this time of the morning you are likely to see some of Ireland's finest bloodstock being put through their paces. The Curragh is also the headquarters of the Irish army and their buildings can be seen in the distance to the east.

We pass the town of Kildare, and the Church of Ireland (Protestant) Cathedral of St. Brigid’s – completed in 1223 – can be clearly seen to the south (left hand side when facing direction of travel). We cross the River Barrow at Monesterevin and enter Co. Laois.

Our train journey makes a stop at Portlaoise (pronounced: Port Leesh-eh). Departing Portlaoise, we soon enter Co. Tipperary and pass the town of Templemore. Shortly after, we pass Loughmoe Castle which can be clearly seen on the southern side of the train, built in the 15th century, the Purcell family lived there until 1760. The next stop is at the town of Thurles. At our next stop – Limerick Junction – a number of Railtours Ireland clients will be leaving the train for the Cliffs of Moher tour. Please remain on the train for the Cork, Blarney Castle and Cobh Heritage Day Tour! Our final stop before Cork is at the town of Mallow.

We arrive into Cork Kent Station for 09:35 and we transfer to our Railtours Ireland tour coach, passing through Cork City en route to Blarney Village and historic Blarney Castle & Gardens, built in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy. You will have time to kiss the famous stone, which is said to bestow the gift of eternal eloquence on those lucky enough to do so. There is also time for shopping and lunch at Blarney and we recommend that you have lunch there, as this will be the only opportunity during the day to have a substantial meal.

We depart Blarney Castle for Cóbh, via the city centre, taking in some of the city sights while en route to our next destination.

On arrival at Cóbh, we will visit St. Colman’s Cathedral. We will then proceed down along the sea front passing the former White Star Line offices en route to the beautifully restored Victorian railway station/transatlantic terminal. This is now the Cóbh Heritage Centre, home to the Queenstown Story. The centre also houses much information about the Great Famine and subsequent Irish Emigration; 3 million Irish people emigrated from Cóbh, (principally to the United States) including Annie Moore, whose statue is located in front of the heritage centre.

Depart Cóbh by train to Killarney, where the rest of the evening is free. There is a large selection of cafés, restaurants and bars in Killarney town as well as many opportunities for live traditional Irish music and entertainment.

Ring Of Kerry Tour

Enjoy your Ful Irish Breakfast at leisure before departing on your Ring of Kerry tour.

There are plenty of stops along the Ring of Kerry for morning tea, lunch and photo stops etc. Ireland’s highest mountains are located in Kerry and Carrauntouhil, which can be seen en route, is the highest, standing at 1041 metres.

We will make a stop at the Kerry Bog Village Museum, which gives people an insight into how people lived and worked in rural Ireland in the 18 th century. The village is the only one of its kind in Europe. Later on the approach to Waterville there are views (weather permitting) of the Skellig Rocks (islands), where Star Wars 'The Force Awakens' was recently filmed.

We will make several photo stops, a stop for lunch and one final stop at the pretty village of Sneem, for about 30 minutes, or as directed by your tour leader.

An essential part of any visit to Ireland, this tour circles the magnificent MacGillycuddy Reeks and runs through its many passes and valleys along the shores of Dingle Bay and Kenmare Bay. There is an unspoilt nature to Ireland's most beautiful region and the Ring of Kerry provides many unforgettable memories as it passes through the many picturesque villages such as Glenbeigh, Waterville and Sneem and returns via Ladies View, the famous Lakes of Killarney and through the Oakwoods of Killarney's magnificent National Park.

At the end of the tour you will be brought to the railway station at Killarney.

17:35 Depart Killarney for Dublin by train and change trains at Mallow, accompanied by your Railtours Ireland host.

Returning to Dublin Heuston at 21:00hrs.

Blarney Castle Tour Reviews

1. blarney castle full-day tour from dublin.

  • Duration: 12 hours
  • Departure:  Molly Malone statue outside the old stone church on Suffolk Street, Dublin
  • Departure Time:  6:50 AM
  • Includes: Entrance fees, transportation, guide services

Let’s start things off on the right foot, with one of the most consistently high-rated Ireland tours we’ve seen. The Blarney Castle Full-Day Tour covers 3 of the country’s top attractions, and really packs a lot in to a 12-hour tour! Just make sure you bring along a nice pair of walking shoes and sense of adventure!

Hop aboard a luxury, climate-controlled coach and head off through the heart of Dublin’s packed cityscape to the rolling, emerald hills of the countryside. This is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and get some fresh air.

You’ll first venture to the Blarney Castle, which you’ve probably heard of before, because of the famous Blarney Stone. If you give it a kiss, you may just receive the “gift of eloquence”.

For over 200 years, all kinds of notable figures and pilgrims have journeyed to kiss this stone, and it is a bit cumbersome to do! You have to lean backwards while holding on to iron railing, to make sure you don’t fall through!

The castle in itself is mystical yet serene, with a very interesting history and countless places to take beautiful photos.

Next, head over to one of Ireland’s 7 Wonders: the Rock of Cashel. Here, you’ll be able to see the Hall of Vicars, Cormack’s Chapel, Celtic Cathedral, Round Tower, one of the country’s oldest wall paintings, and more. The grounds are very beautiful, as well, with ancient high crosses.

After, head over to one of Ireland’s most impressive Medieval castles: Cahir Castle. Constructed in the 13 th century, it is one of the largest and most well-preserved in the world with its original defensive structure.

The 3-Day Cork, Blarney Castle, Ring of Kerry, and Cliffs of Moher Rail Tour will take you throughout the beautiful scenery and stunning history of Ireland!

As you probably already deduced from the name, this tour does last for 3 days. However, it’s truly one of the best ways to go about seeing Ireland as it includes all coach and rail transport, full Irish breakfasts, 2-night accommodation, and more.

That way, you don’t have to worry about the logistics as it’s all taken care of for you! We really appreciated how they allow you enough time at each landmark and attraction to really get a feel for it and see everything you want to.

Cork, The Ring of Kerry, and Cliffs of Moher are all breathtaking, and there’s so much to learn. The city tour is a blast, and we loved the coastal panoramas at the Ring of Kerry.

That’s not all you’ll see, either. Limerick, Clare, and Galway are all stops on your multi-day tour. Everywhere you go, your tour guides will make sure to give you quite the education. They all seem to be very passionate about Ireland and its history, and we loved the fun personal anecdotes, too!

Killarney is so incredibly charming, and the people there are just lovely. It wasn’t a surprise then, that staying at the hotel here was wonderful.

The hospitality is practically unmatchable, and there was a great attention to detail. All in all, if you want to see a huge portion of Ireland without worrying about the logistics, this is the way to go!

You and the rest of your group will head out from Dublin early in the morning, driving through the midlands and into County Cork.

This is an absolutely beautiful drive, which seems to make it go by a bit faster. In fact, you’ll even get to see the Golden Vale, which is known as one of the most fertile places in all of Europe.

Serving as the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for hundreds of centuries before the Normans invaded, it is also home to some of the most impressive collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture in the world!

Next, you’ll spend 1.5 hours doing whatever you please in Cork. We highly recommend the old English Markets, which offer countless food stalls serving fresh, local produce. It’s so good, even Queen Elizabeth II of England has stopped by! This city is vibrant with character and delicious beer and whiskey, which often go hand-in-hand.

Meet up with your group once again, and head out to Blarney Castle & Gardens. Give a smooch to the Blarney Stone if you’d like, or take a stroll throughout the fantastic Blarney gardens!

Once you pass through County Tipperary and Kildare, you’ll finally get to the Blarney Castle! Not only is it worth going for the Blarney stone – the castle has its own interesting history along with the grounds and gardens!

The guides do make it that much more intriguing, not like it’s really necessary. We found them to be very personable, funny, and well-educated on all things “Ireland”!

Your Guide To Dublin, Ireland

Getting there –.

Ireland is actually one of the most convenient European countries to travel to! With various US airlines offering nonstop flights, we recommend flying out of Atlanta, JFK (New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Orlando, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. If flying from the east coast, you can expect your flight to be around a mere 6 hours!

As our tours all originate in Dublin, you’ll likely want to fly into this city. Keep in mind that there aren’t always direct flights to Dublin, and may be only available to Belfast. If that’s the case, there are plenty of excellent train services that run from Belfast to Dublin, and takes just a bit over 2 hours to get there.

Getting Around –

So, on these tours you’ll have all transportation covered. However, as you’re going to be staying in Dublin and won’t be on tours all of the time, you’ll need to know how to best get around. Thankfully, the city has made it incredibly easy to do!

Bus – Their public bus network is a budget-friendly, reliable way to get around as it covers the city and suburbs very well. You can pay with cash, but you must pay with exact cash and only coins. No change is given. Prepaid tickets are less stressful for many, and are just quicker and more convenient.

Tram – The Luas trams are quick and also very convenient. However, you will have to get a valid ticket before boarding. Leap Cards are ideal for longer stays, and you can reload your balance at the vending machines! Just make sure your ticket is valid in the zones you’re traveling in. Check out the Journey Planner on their website to plan this out ahead of time.

Bike – Dublin is a very bike-friendly city, and being such, there are tons of places to rent bicycles. Just keep in mind that it’s often pretty wet, so make sure you’re comfortable with biking on wet surfaces.

Walking – Walking is one of the best ways to see the city, as some of the best sites in Dublin are all located within a pretty compact space. People tend to be pretty friendly overall, and we found it to be safe in our experience. Again, be prepared for rain or drizzle at any time of year!

Where to Stay –

Keep in mind when making your plans for accommodation that if you’re taking a multi-day trip that your hotels/B&Bs will be taken care of during these days. Just don’t double book! Now, let’s take a look at the best areas of the city to stay in.

Smithfield – Located on Dublin’s northside, it used to be a little bit sketchy a couple decades ago. However, since then, it’s become much safer and offers tourists an insight into local lifestyles. Its big cobblestone plaza is so charming and is full of locally-owned restaurants and artisan cafes that are perfect for foodies and coffee lovers. Depending on the time of year, you may see some family-friendly festivals going on. Oh, and if you’re a raver or enjoy a good beer then you’ll love the array of warehouse clubs and packed pubs in the area.

Portobello – This area is full of history, from Eastern European Jews seeking refuge here, to the birthplace of George Bernard Shaw! In more recent times, it’s become the “go-to” area for trendy Dubliners to let loose and have a good time. Restaurants, art galleries, clubs, and more are located here. However, it’s also quite beautiful with trees and walking paths aplenty, along with the Grand Canal.

Merrion Square – A Georgian square located on the southside, it’s been around since 1762 and isn’t too far from the city center. The garden square is perfect for picnicking and is the perfect way to escape the hustle-and-bustle of crowded tourists spots. If you or traveling partner(s) is a history buff, you’ll have to check out the revolutionary landmarks that dot the area. Not only that, but the National Library, National Gallery, and National Concert Hall are all located here.

O’Connell Street – From boutiques and vintage shops to hot clubs and delicious restaurants, it’s all located here. Not only that, but there are all kinds of hotels for any budget. If you want to get right into that busy Dublin center, this is the place to be as O’Connell is the city’s main street.

Restaurants and Eating Out –

Contrary to what many may think, Dublin is much more than potatoes and corned beef! In fact, it has an incredibly diverse food scene that is quite impressive on an international scale.

Chapter One – Melding traditional Irish ingredients with international cooking techniques, it’s a perfectly sophisticated spot to go on a romantic date or simply enjoy delicious eats. We love the fish served atop beets, potatoes, celery, carrots, and mushrooms with a creamy Maltaise sauce to finish it off.

Brother Hubbard – Having been around for over 10 years, it’s perfect for a rainy day (or genuinely any day as it’s that delicious). A modern twist on traditional comfort food along with some of the best coffee in the city. You have to try the Beans and Pulled Pork Special! Keep in mind that there are now 2 locations, but the original one is our favorite and is located on Capel St.

The Winding Stair – Just looking at this restaurant, you can see it’s just the quintessential Dublin spot. Grab one of the countless books available (including UK and European editions of contemporary literature along with many classics), and head up for breathtaking vistas of the River Liffey. Fill up with a traditional Irish meal with a fancy twist. Our favorites were the seafood chowder and potato dumplings.

Lucky Tortoise – Who doesn’t love some good dim sum?! The Lucky Tortoise is just the spot, and is known for its mouthwatering potstickers, savory Japanese pancakes and wine on tap! It’s also an excellent selection if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly restaurant.

The Pepper Pot – Are you a sandwich lover? If so, look no further than The Pepper Pot. If you want a life-changing experience, try the bacon and roast pear sandwich at this lovely restaurant located inside the gorgeous Georgian Powerscourt Townhouse. Their fluffy homemade bread and cheese is incredible, along with their baked desserts!

Cornucopia – If you’re vegan, vegetarian, or simply like eating this kind of cuisine, Cornucopia is a great option. It’s a neighborhood staple and has been for over 2 decades now, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Nightlife and Entertainment –

Dubliners tend to be a lively bunch who enjoy everything from a good live music venue to bustling pubs to thumping warehouse clubs.

Whelan’s – Many notable bands and artists have begun their careers at Whelan’s, which is known as one of the most reputable live music venues in the country. You can find all kinds of music here, depending on the night! From old-school to indie rock bands, to DJs – there’s really something for everyone.

The Cobblestone – If you’re looking for the ultimate Irish pub and live music spot, this one has to be at the top of your list. Having pumped out Guinness and folk tunes for decades now, it’s a blast and a wonderful way to spend a night out.

Café En Seine – Are you looking for an upscale spot to dress up and enjoy all things glamorous? This cocktail bar is creative, and sports beautiful art nouveau rooms across a whopping 3 floors. Not to mention their outdoor street garden gives serious Parisian vibes.

Peruke & Periwig – What a charming little place this is! If you’re up for kooky cocktails, chill music, and love a throwback, you’ll find that and much more here.

Dublin has much more to offer than just clubs and bars, however, and we’d be remiss not to mention some of them!

Theater – If you didn’t already know, Dublin has a very rich literary history, with the likes of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and many others calling this city their hometown. As you can imagine, these performance traditions are still going strong. There are many fantastic theaters to check out, such as: The New Theatre, The Olympia, The Gaiety, and The Abbey Theatre.

Ghost Bus Tour – For us, this is a must-do. The Gravedigger Ghost Bus Tour is fun, interesting, and will surely offer a solid history lesson! As Dublin is 1,000 years old or so, there are plenty of stories and sightings that’ve been retold and many of which are definitely not for the faint of heart!

Comedy – There are tons of great Irish comedians, and if that sounds interesting to you, check out what’s going on at Vicar Street.

Weather –

As we’ve mentioned before, you can feasibly expect to see rain in Dublin at any time of year. However, we highly recommend visiting in April or May, if possible. This time is the perfect balance between smaller tourist crowds and nicer weather. Just remember that St. Patrick’s Day (March 17 th ) and around Christmas is going to be packed in the city.

The summer months understandably have the warmest weather, though this is also when the crowds will be the largest. It all depends on what you value more: nicer weather or smaller crowds. Regardless, you should always bring a jacket with you as Dublin tends to stay a bit cool throughout the year.

Attractions –

Trinity College – It’s true that there’s almost always going to be a line of people waiting to visit Trinity College. However, it’s absolutely worth the wait! With all kinds of important artifacts, hundreds of thousands of some of the world’s oldest books, the Book of Kells, ancient Irish harps, and more it has to be experienced at least once.

St. Stephens Green – If you want to get out and enjoy some fresh air, take a leisurely stroll around here. The Georgian buildings that surround it are also beautiful, and with 22 acres, it’s a great way to relax and calm the mind.

Kildare Street Museums and Houses of Parliament – The Irish Parliament was once known as Kildare House, which was commissioned in 1745 by James Fitzgerald, Earl of Kildare. The National Library is very close, and comes with all kinds of legendary literature and a permanent W.B. Yeats exhibition.

National Museum of Ireland: Archaeology – If you’re a history buff, you’ll love this one. It comes with jaw-dropping exhibitions of all types. However, some of the crowd favorites are Ireland’s Gold, Prehistoric Ireland, and their Viking Collection.

The Irish Emigration Museum – This museum has all kinds of stories about Irish emigration throughout the centuries. With an impressive 20+ themed galleries to check out, it also talks about how Irish immigrants have influenced the places in which they’ve relocated to.

Kilmainham Gaol – Having been around since 1789, this jail is kind of creepy but very interesting. The 1916 rebels were first held and executed here, so it does have a rather dark history. The guided tours cover Irish history for the last couple hundred of years.

Christ Church Cathedral – As you probably already know, Ireland has absolutely gorgeous pieces of architecture and Dublin is no different. Restored in the 19 th century, it was actually built where the city’s first church once stood from 1028! You can also see the replica of the Norman conqueror, Strongbow!

Tips –

  • Watch out for street signs. If you’re trying to get around, it can be a bit tricky if you aren’t really looking as some of the signs have faded or are covered by plants, trees, etc. Many locals just use landmarks and pubs for directions to somewhere rather than street names.
  • If you’re trying to cross the street, just follow the locals. If you see them jaywalking to the other side, you do the same.
  • Wake up early and get out there! If you want Dublin “to yourself” try to get up early! Grab a coffee somewhere and head out to wherever you want! We recommend going to the most tourist-heavy places first as these are less likely to have lines or crowds early on.
  • Grab a Dublin Pass, which includes entry to most of the most iconic local attractions. Not only that, but it lets you use the Hop On and Off bus for free! This makes getting around the city so much more convenient and affordable!
  • Do some days trips, especially take a tour of the Cliffs of Moher , these stunning cliffs are over 700 feet tall and considered the 8th wonder of the world.

Do You Need Tickets to Kiss the Blarney Stone?

killarney to blarney castle tour

Fortunately, whether your entrance is purchased via one of the Blarney Castle tours I mentioned above or you choose to visit the grounds on your own, the cost of kissing the Blarney Stone is included in the original entrance fee!

Remember to hold onto your ticket, as you may need to present it again when you reach the top of the castle. It’s advisable to purchase tickets in advance, particularly during peak tourist season, to ensure you get the best options for the day and time you want to go.

What is the Average Blarney Castle Tour Cost?

The average cost of a Blarney Castle tour can vary depending on the type of tour you choose. For instance, a simple admission ticket for a self-guided tour of the castle and grounds is around €20 per adult.

However, if you opt for a guided tour that includes transportation and a knowledgeable local, the price can range from €50 to €100 per person, depending on the tour’s inclusions and duration. For a more comprehensive and personalized experience, private tours are available but can cost upwards of €200.

Always check the specific details and inclusions of the tour on the tour operator’s website before booking.

What is the Best Way of Getting to Blarney Castle?

Blarney Castle tours departing from Cork only have to drive 5.6 miles to get to the castle and gardens

Blarney Castle is conveniently located just outside the city of Cork, and there are several ways to get there. If you’re driving, it’s a straightforward journey of around 5.6 miles (9km) from Cork city center, with ample parking available on site.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Cork’s Parnell Place bus station; the 215 route stops at Blarney Village and the Blarney Woollen Mills, just a short, 5-minute walk from the castle. Here is the bus schedule if you’re interested!

If you prefer not to navigate public transportation, organized tours from Cork (and even from Dublin) often include transportation to and from Blarney Castle, providing a stress-free way to visit this enchanting site.

If you’ll be coming from Shannon Airport, then the best method to get to Blarney is to rent a car. You could also take a train to Cork (possibly with rail changes) and then get on the bus, but this will take a long time.

What Are the Best Times to Visit Blarney Castle?

The best times to visit Blarney Castle are during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October). Here are 16 BEST Places to Stay in Cork Ireland for your visit.

The weather is milder, the crowds are smaller, and you can still enjoy all that Blarney Castle and its grounds have to offer without the peak season high prices that Ireland often sees come June.

However, if you’re determined to visit during the summer months, try arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the busiest hours. It’s nearly impossible to snap a photo without thousands of people in it during the middle of the day!

What Should I Bring on my Blarney Castle Tour?

Many Blarney Castle tours provide ample time for exploring the grounds

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience on your Blarney Castle tour, here are some essentials you may want to bring:

  • Comfortable Shoes: The grounds of Blarney Castle are extensive and can involve a lot of walking, often over uneven surfaces. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must.
  • Camera or Smartphone: The castle and surrounding gardens are breathtaking, so don’t forget to bring a camera or smartphone to capture your experience.
  • Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated and avoid hanger by carrying water and some snacks, especially if you’re planning to spend several hours at the site.
  • Rain Gear: Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. Bring a raincoat or umbrella just in case.
  • Sunscreen: Despite the unpredictable weather, the sun can be strong on clear days. Protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: If you’ve got some Irish in you, these are a must. The grounds aren’t well shaded, so you’re going to be spending time in the sun.
  • Small Backpack: A small backpack can help carry all your essentials while keeping your hands free for exploring and photographing.
  • Printed Tickets: If you’ve purchased your tickets online, it’s a good idea to bring a printed copy in case you don’t have service when you arrive.
  • Guidebook or Map: While there are signposts around the grounds, a guidebook or map could be useful for navigating and learning more about the site’s history.
  • Sense of Adventure: Above all, bring your sense of adventure and curiosity! Take your time exploring, snap lots of photos, and ask your guide plenty of questions.

See What Customers Are Saying About Blarney Castle

This place was stunning. There is SO much more to Blarney Castle than the stone. You can easily spend an entire day here exploring the grounds. The druid caves are mystical, the gardens are gorgeous, the castle itself is huge and wild. I wasn’t going to go to Blarney, because I thought the stone was a very touristy thing to do. But I went, and I am 1000% glad that I did.

Juli Harland

The castle and the grounds are wonderful to experience. There is so much more to this than ‘kissing the Blarney stone’. Beautiful flowers, statues, woods, and rock formations. Can easily take 3 – 4 hours to see it all.

Come for the stone, stay for the gardens! No but seriously, the gardens are the main attraction. You could easily spend half a day exploring them. One of the most impressive botanical gardens we’ve ever visited.

A most awesome way to spend at least 3 hours with enough to fill 6. So many things to see and do in the gardens and woodland. The bee keeping, the Rock Close, the Fern Garden is amazing. So many people think this is just the Blarney Stone. The “bee line” up and down miss all the little side rooms, hidden staircases and room within a room. Especially the kids room off the main kitchen. Of course the Blarney stone. Staying at the Blarney Castle Hotel makes this visit so easy. Breakfast and into the grounds early, stay late. No line for the experience kissing the Stone.

Peter Watson

This is a real paradise if you love nature. Huge variety of trees, bushes and flowers. Large area containing a lake. There are horses and donkeys. I really enjoyed spending time in this incredibly beautiful park. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bring water and snacks, bedding. This is an unforgettable vacation for at least 4 hours, where you can completely relax from all worries and fuss.

Olga Zagorulko

Spectacular – cannot begin to explain the wonder and awe of this place. From the castle and its beautiful surrounding gardens to being able to kiss the blarney stone. Definitely one for the bucket list.

Warren Kent

Beautiful gardens and castle. It was amazing walking through the gardens, so peaceful and quite with such a variation of views ( from the fern forest to the lake to the pinetum). The Castle itself and the surrounding history are very interesting and the views are spectacular from the castle. Perfect place to go yourself, with your significant other or family. I would definitely recommend this place. Revisited the gardens and castle and still love it, there’s just so much to explore.
