HIKING TOURS IN SWITZERLAND

Switzerland is the crown jewel of the alps and the heart of ryder-walker’s expertise and history. the mountainous country has more than earned its reputation for the highest standards of trekking. with views and vertical relief that rival the himalaya, glaciated peaks that have captured the imaginations of generations of mountaineers, and a trail system that is truly unrivaled in terms of quality and breadth, even the most hiking conscious countries aspire to be like switzerland..

Ryder-Walker offers guided and self-guided treks in three major regions of Switzerland: The Engadine is a peaceful valley that combines world-class accommodation with a sense of peace unique to the Engadine, the Berner Oberland is the premier tourist destination in Switzerland where the country’s most varied hiking is hidden in precipitous valleys, and the Swiss Valais is the mountainous heart of the country where the world-famous giants of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa are found to the east and Mont Blanc rests just over the French border to the west.

In the Engadine region of Switzerland Ryder-Walker offers two unique guided and self-guided tours, the Engadine Summit Series and the Engadine Trek . Both follow the Engadine valley to its junction with the Italy-adjacent Val Bregaglia in the medieval village of Soglio. The Engadine is unique among trekking destinations because of the accessibility and flexibility of the region. Here there is a truly exceptional breadth of options for both experienced and beginner trekkers. An expansive transit network of trains, gondolas, and funiculars allows the tour to be tailored exactly to your group’s abilities. The Engadine remains one of Ryder-Walker’s most classic destinations because of the pure unrivaled quality of the accommodations – a bevy of five-star hotels offer old-world sentimentality with modern comforts and excellent local cuisine. Highlights include the medieval village of Soglio and the lakeside village of Sils Maria which was referred to by Friedrich Nietzsche as the most beautiful and thought-provoking village in Europe. Finally for more relaxed self-guided hikers, we offer the Allegra Engadine Trek which explores the pastoral valleys between Scuol and Pontresina.

The Berner Oberland is the perfect Switzerland destination for dedicated hikers who are looking for a trek that tests their endurance while rewarding them with some of the most iconic mountain views in the Alps. All of these routes explore the glaciated valleys high above Bern and visit the Lauterbrunnen – the most dramatic alpine valley in the world . For those looking for an ultimate adventure, the guided Eiger Trail offers the most complete exploration of the Oberland. Ryder-Walker’s Eiger Trail hike journeys between Gstaad and Grindelwald. Along the way, we cross over the highest passes in the Alps, through secret valleys, and international destinations such as the cliff-bound villages of Wengen and Mürren and the sleepy hamlet of Kandersteg. For self guided clients we offer a variety of shorter excursions into the Berner Oberland including: the Berner Oberland Traverse which tackles some of the highest mountain passes in the Alps, the slightly shorter Berner Oberland Trek , the Jungfrau Loop which is an easier-going circuit of the Lauterbrunnen valley, and our Pastoral Berner Oberland which avoids the more strenuous sections of the other hikes.

The Swiss Valais region of Switzerland has a lot to brag about, the slopes of the region’s highest peaks, such as the Mont Blanc (FR), Monte Rosa, and Matterhorn cascade down into lush valleys, where cows graze and the swiss cheese industry is practiced as it was hundreds of years ago. For guided clients we offer a suite of truly classic hiking tours: the Tour du Mont Blanc – perhaps the most recognized hike in the world, the Hiker’s Haute Route – a historic route which connects the Mont Blanc and Matterhorn, the Matterhorn Trek – a well kept secret that circumnavigates the Matterhorn to Zermatt and could be considered one of the most epic hikes in the world, and our Highlights of Switzerland: Engadine, Lago Maggiore, and Zermatt tour which visits all of our favorite Swiss hikes and villages across three distinct biomes. For those that wish to take a self guided tour of Switzerland’s heart we offer the Hiker’s Haute Route , Tour du Mont Blan c , and Matterhorn Trek as well as a collection of self-guided exclusives: Our Secret Swiss Valley’s Trek which was profiled by National Geographic, the Swiss Haute Route which follows the Swiss half of the Hiker’s Haute Route, and the TMB Vitess e which is a truncated Tour du Mont Blanc for those short on time.

Outside of these major regions we offer two additional self-guided treks: The Appenzell Hut Hop and the Ticino: Swiss Lakes District . Appenzell is a stunning and remote section of Switzerland that is considered by many to be the most authentic region in the entire country, while the Swiss Lakes District gives the Italian Lakes District a run for its money in terms of natural beauty and elegance.

Matthew was amazing. World class guide. The tour description did not match the actual schedule (no gondola day #1). Unfortunately, those of us in good hiking fitness were held back by those less fit. That was frustrating to hike then wait over and over again. Meals as advertised. Trail lunches were terrific; allowing for great views and spending time with our group.

Testimonials.

This trip has been in the works for almost 3 years and through the Covid epidemic you somehow managed to pull it off. The additions and changes you had to make were remarkable in fitting our needs. How can an 11 day trip go off without 1 hiccup? It did because of your knowledge, professionalism and extreme dedication to your clients. As one of your guides(Suze) said: Emma never sleeps! Every single detail from luggage delivery, hotel accommodations, trip notes, maps, food requests(we had 2 vegetarians) was spot on. From the bottom of my heart, you made a 25 year dream to hike the Haute come true. It was way beyond my expectations. To do it with friends was even more special. On any future expeditions, I would never consider another person(or company) to arrange my trip. No wonder Richard Branson so highly recommends you. To all who read this review, I personally have arranged dozens of trips over the years, but I knew from the start that Emma was the one to arrange this one.

A super mountain guide who can guide you around the mountains safely. Olle, her dog was very welcoming to my dog too when we both joined for a Thursday morning hike. I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice way to spend time in nature

Back from the Matterhorn Tour with Watse. 1st organized trek experience and I highly recommend. Real holidays, top organization, great advice. Just to walk and let yourself be guided. Thanks to Pierrick for his professionalism. My next experience will be with Watse.

Cloud 9 planned everything for our group: Food, lodging, baggage transportation and excellent hiking plans. The food and service in the hotels was great and staffs were friendly and helpful! I would highly recommend Cloud 9 for anyone planning a trip.

Cloud 9 planned everything for our group: Food, lodging, baggage transportation, and excellent hiking plans. The food and service in the hotels were great and the staff were friendly and helpful! I would highly recommend Cloud 9 to anyone planning a trip.

I’ve been on seven treks in the Alps, including Chamonix-Zermatt, the TMB, and the Bernese Oberland. I’ve also managed to climb seven of the easiest peaks. The trip that I have enjoyed the most was the 2016 Tour de Monte Rosa led by Emma Jack. The weather and varied scenery were superb (except for day two which was wet and misty). The group was eclectic but friendly and the length and difficulty of the tour just right for me. The accommodation (five nights in hotels and five in refuges) was of a very good standard and was fabulous at the Rifugio Gabiet and at the Hotel Hannigalp in Grachen.

Fantastic week walking. Amazing scenery. Very much appreciated the insights brought by Claudia, our local guide. I would highly recommend this trip. Tip – keep the contents of your backpack to the essentials only.

Frequently asked questions about Switzerland hiking tours

Definitely!

Switzerland is a hiker’s paradise, with trails for all experience levels, from gentle family-friendly strolls to challenging multi-day hikes. The country’s stunning scenery, with its snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes, offers postcard-worthy backdrops for any hike.

Here are our 4 top reasons why Switzerland is a great place to go hiking:

  • Variety of trails : All levels of hikers can find a trail that fits, from easy walks to challenging climbs.
  • Stunning scenery : Unsurprisingly, the Alps offer some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the world.
  • Well-maintained trails : The trails in Switzerland are well-maintained and easy to follow.
  • Great public transport system : When hiking in Switzerland, you can easily reach the trailheads by public transportation.
  • Plenty of accommodation options : You’ll find tons of hotels, hostels, and campsites for all budget levels to choose from.

According to CEOWORLD, Switzerland is the most expensive country in the world. It is, therefore, obvious, that your Switzerland hiking trip could get quite costly.

But don’t worry, here are our top tips for hiking Switzerland on a budget!

  • Choose hikes without mountain transport: Opt for trails that start at lower elevations and avoid cable car rides.
  • Stay in hostels or campsites: This is a more affordable way to stay compared to hotels.
  • Pack your own food: Bring lunches and snacks to avoid buying expensive meals at mountain restaurants.
  • Look for deals and discounts: Consider regional passes that offer discounts on mountain transport and other activities.

Go on an all-inclusive guided trip: Going with a guide can help you avoid unnecessary expenses. Your guide can help you choose affordable & quality restaurants, cheaper accommodation options, etc.

Your Switzerland hiking vacation can be a big challenge or a gentle stroll, depending on which trip you choose! Here’s a breakdown:

Easy hikes:

  • Switzerland has a vast network of well-maintained, clearly marked trails designated as “easy” or “family-friendly.”
  • These trails are often flat or have gentle inclines, making them suitable for casual walkers and families with children.
  • Many resorts offer easy sightseeing trails starting at higher elevations accessible by cable car, reducing the initial climb.

Moderate hikes:

  • If you’re looking for more of a challenge, there are numerous moderate trails in areas like the Bernese Oberland , with steeper inclines and more uneven terrain.
  • These trails might require more physical fitness, but are still achievable for most hikers in decent shape. Hut-to-hut hiking in Switzerland is usually reserved for intermediate hikers, so if you’re planning one of these trips, do some training in advance.

Difficult hikes:

  • Switzerland also boasts challenging hikes for experienced hikers, such as the Haute Route . These involve significant elevation gain, and rough terrain, and may require scrambling or the use of poles or crampons.
  • High-altitude trails can present additional challenges due to thinner air and potential exposure to the elements.

Yes! Switzerland’s amazing public transport system, trains, buses, and even mountain lifts, can take you to many trailheads. You won’t need a car for many fantastic Swiss hikes.

Hiking boots are not necessarily for all hikes in Switzerland, but they’re always a good idea.

If you’re planning on sticking to well-maintained, low-elevation day hikes, good walking shoes with good tread are okay. However, hiking boots are strongly recommended for better ankle support, sturdier soles for rough terrain, and waterproofing for potential wet conditions.

So, hiking boots provide more safety and comfort, especially on challenging trails. But for easy strolls, good walking shoes can suffice.

Matterhorn peak from a Swiss mountain village

Description

This trip follows a true “Best of” itinerary to highlight the most iconic Alpine regions of Switzerland, Engadine and Valais. Scenic hikes with sweeping mountain views, charming villages of Sils and Zermatt, delicious regional cuisine and fabulous lodging are what make this trip special. Full of moderate yet challenging hikes, this itinerary explores the best of this gorgeous region’s mountainous trails.

We have also planned to experience the unique Swiss Alps express trains, which are “UNESCO World Heritage” attractions and great ways to travel through the Alps. The epic, jaw-dropping train rides are often a highlight of the trip, but don’t worry – they are “the world’s slowest express trains”, which make them perfect for relaxing and taking in the surrounding views.

The Swiss Alps are full of panoramic scenes of mountain summits like the Matterhorn, stunning lush flower filled valleys, glaciers and crystal blue alpine lakes. The magic and lore of these Swiss landscapes emerge in more and more detail as our trip progresses. Come explore the best of what Switzerland has to offer on this trip of a lifetime!

  • Vehicle Transfer: 3 hours (Zurich Airport – Sils)

On this  Alps hiking tour , we meet at the Zurich Airport and take a private group transfer to our hotel in Sils. Our route takes us along the waters of Zurich Lake and over the mountainous Julier Pass. Our accommodation for the next 2 nights is in a charming village between 2 lakes in an extremely beautiful setting. The famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche used to come to this village to relax and his house is now a museum some guests love to explore on their own. After settling into our rooms and having some time to relax or explore, we’ll meet for our first dinner together and taste of the region’s spectacular cuisine.

  • Hiking Distance: 7.2 mi (11.6 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 1575 ft (480 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1542 ft (470 m)
  • Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours

Today after breakfast we take a short transfer by bus to the village of Maloja. Here we’ll begin our first hike into the surrounding mountains. Our loop starts at the base of Piz Salecina and climbs into the valley beneath this peak. After crossing the valley’s waterway we’ll climb up toward our first of two lakes, Cavloc Lake. Here we are surrounded by high mountain peaks reflecting off its pristine blue water.

After enjoying the lake we’ll continue up the valley a ways before turning back toward the lake and finishing our loop. The second half of our hike takes us around the base of Salecina and allows more sweeping views of the nearby mountain ranges. After passing another lake we’ll start our descent towards town with the iconic ringing of cowbells surrounding us. A short bus brings us back to our hotel, where deserved hot showers and another fabulous dinner together await our arrival.

Today we pack our bags after breakfast, leave them for our luggage taxi and head via a quick bus ride to the Corvatsch cable car system. If weather permits, we will take the gondola to the top (10,836 ft) for a short time to take in the 360° views of the peaks and glaciers that surround us. We’ll then descend to the Murtèl Station where we’ll start our day’s hike. First, we find ourselves climbing toward and eventually over the epic Fuorcla Surlej mountain pass sitting high over the Roseg Valley, showcasing a magnificent glacial cirque: Morteratsch, Bernina, Scerscen, and Roseg. After we check in, a horse drawn carriage will take us down a beautiful path along the river to ring in the evening!

Today’s hike might be our trip’s longest but is one of the most rewarding for our effort. With a short private transfer, our trail today takes us to the isolated far end of the Roseg Valley near to the Coaz Refuge. As we climb up the valley, we’ll pass by the green waters of Vadret Lake. As we climb, we’ll have stunning views of the towering peaks of Piz Glüschaint, Piz Roseg, Piz Bernina and the Bernina Glaciers. On our return, we pass by rushing waterfalls and meandering creek tributaries spread out on the valley’s floor.

This morning kicks off with a short transfer into the beautiful village of Pontrescina where we will take a train into Morteratsch with the stop right in front of our lodging for the night. After we drop our belongings, we’ll hike up the Val Morteratsch towards the glacier by the same name. We will enjoy the views of the Piz Palu, Piz Cambrena, and Piz Bernina. If time permits, we will reach the Boval hut (8,186 ft), savoring the sights of the magnificent glaciers. After a break to take in the iconic Alpine landscape and have a rest at the hut, we descend back to Morteratsch where our hotel, luggage, showers and dinner this evening await.

  • Train Ride Duration: 7.5 hours (St. Moritz – Zermatt – via the Glacier Express)

Today is considered a rest day from the trail but is often one of the highlights of the trip. We start by taking a short private transfer to the charming village of St. Moritz. Here we catch the most historic, scenic and iconic train ride you can in the Swiss Alps on the Glacier Express. This spectacular train, known as the “world’s slowest express train,” crosses 291 bridges and passes through 91 tunnels on its way to Zermatt, the capital of Swiss mountaineering at the foot of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. We feel this is a perfect way to take a rest from the trail, but not the Alpine scenery you came for! A short walk from Zermatt Train Station will get us to our hotel for the next two evenings.

  • Elevation Loss: 2855 ft (870 m)

Our final day of exploration takes us high above the Zermatt Valley. We’ll start by riding a famous, historic and extremely scenic cog railway train, considered one of the 7 marvels of alpine tourism, up to its highest station at Gornergrat (10,138ft./3090m). Here the numerous surrounding peaks create an impressive 360-degree horizon of jagged rock that is a truly spectacular display of one of our planet’s finest landscapes. Our hike down is full of epic views, especially of the most iconic summit in early mountaineering history, the Matterhorn. As we hike, we pass a few clear alpine lakes with outstanding reflections of the natural world around us. Our hike ends at the Riffelalp station where we’ll ride back down to Zermatt. Our final evening will consist of one last farewell dinner; a celebration of our time together and the fond memories we’ve made experiencing the best of Switzerland’s hikes, landscapes, villages, cuisine and hospitality.

Today marks the end of our journey. We’ll enjoy one last breakfast together before transferring to the Zurich airport for departure flights. Meals: What to Expect

This Alps hiking tour features a combination of in-town meals and meals prepared by your guide. Most lunches and some breakfasts are prepared on the trail by your guides. Amazing Swiss/Italian/German meals will be had in towns! Bread, grains, pastas, rice, polenta, local cheese, and pork products are all staples in this region.

It is common in the Alps that restaurants do not allow groups to order from an a la carte menu; a set menu is created, and guests do not have the option of ordering differently from the set menu.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian, kosher and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some countries may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Please inquire with us for more information about the specific trip you’re interested in.

Lodging: What to Expect

Our trips in the Alps offer the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful lodges, inns, and chalets that European mountain villages are famous for. The historic, cultural lodging (and dining) experience of the Alps is a major highlight of these trips for many guests!

There are some unique elements to the accommodations that are important for guests to understand:

  • Some hotels do not offer ensuite rooms so bathrooms may be either shared with other guests in the hallway, or you have a private bathroom down the hallway.
  • While most hotels are considered 4-star lodges, know that certain nights we prioritized location coupled with incredible glacial valley-views. Though these accommodations have everything you need and are quite cozy, they are considered slightly more rustic than the other nights.

Please see the  Accommodations  section for more information.

Gear We Provide

We provide all group gear which includes the following:

Travel to Zurich, Switzerland

Booking flights.

For this trip you will need to arrive in Zurich, Switzerland on the day the trip begins, no later than 12 P.M. If you would like to rest more before beginning the trek, we recommend arriving a day early and enjoying Zurich. A Wildland representative will rendezvous with you at the Zurich airport on Day 1 at approximately 1 P.M. and provide transportation to our first night’s accommodations. Departure flights can leave Zurich anytime after 3 P.M. on day 8 of the itinerary.

Flights to and from Zurich are the guest’s responsibility. Multiple airlines operate flights into Zurich from many U.S. and European international airports. Some of the primary U.S. departure cities include Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Denver, Newark, Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco, New York and Minneapolis. The duration of flights is 10-20 hours normally with one or two stops. Direct flights are available from some U.S. cities.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age Restrictions

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance Requirements

Field evacuation, repatriation, and medical insurance is required on all Alps trips as a condition of partnership terms with our European vendors (field evacuation and repatriation minimum coverage is a combined $200,000 USD).

If you need to purchase field evacuation, repatriation, or medical insurance we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance and policies meet all Alps requirements.

For information on the recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

For even greater information, or if you simply prefer communicating with a real, live person, feel free to contact our exclusive agent Michael Bennett. Michael will help you identify the best product for your needs, and there is no cost associated with his assistance. You may contact him at:

Email: [email protected] US by Phone: 877-305-9083 Direct/International by Phone: 702-448-3664

If you already have the required insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

Weather in the Alps

The location of the Alps and their tremendous elevation variations lead to significant and sometimes unpredictable temperatures and weather patterns, both in different ranges and in a particular range itself. Due to the Alps’ location in central Europe, they are influenced by moist air off the Atlantic, cold polar air from northern Europe, fluctuating air masses; and warm Mediterranean air flows northward.

Due to these extraordinary forces acting on the Alps’ weather, we recommend following our clothing list closely (in your trip packet when you register), as guests are best served by being prepared for a broad range of possible temperatures and weather conditions.

The average temperatures and precipitation in Alps are:

Magical and Unforgettable

This was my third and favorite trip with Wildland. I am already dreaming about the next one! Our guide, Johannes, was exceptional, the views were literally jaw dropping, and food and accommodations were top notch. We saw countless glaciers and waterfalls. The Glacier Express train was such a great break in the middle of the trip and a perfect way to see even more of the country. Opening the door onto my balcony in Zermatt and seeing the Matterhorn in perfect view while the church bells rang in the distance was pure magic; I will never forget that moment. Thank you, Wildland!

This trip was amazing! The hiking views were incredible and our accommodations were great. Our guide Johannes was the best; always organized, knowledgeable, and so much fun! The train trip on the Glacier Express added to the entire experience. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who's ever wanted to really experience the Alps. It has classic Alps views, fabulous regional food, and of course great hiking!

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Due to Switzerland's rugged terrain, you can look forward to some exhilarating—but steep!—climbs along rocky and sometimes uneven paths. Please note that there's no van support on this trip (you can imagine why!), so you should be comfortable with the alpine elevation and remote routes.

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that we use a variety of local transportation, including gondolas, trains and local drivers, instead of Backroads vans. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.

9 Switzerland hikes that offer views you have to see to believe

Early morning dawn scene of sunrise on the Matterhorn Mountain reflecting pink in the lake with male man on rock with red down jacket with clear blue sky Gornergrat Zermatt Matterhorn Europe

Matterhorn is the mountain you can’t stop gawping at, one of many highlights on Switzerland's best hiking trails © wilpunt / Getty Images

In Switzerland , the mountains call. One look at this ravishing land of skyscraping peaks, glaciers, forests and lakes of piercing blue will have you itching to sling on a backpack, zip up to the heights and hit the trail.

You certainly won’t be alone. The Swiss seem to be born with one leg up a mountain – which means hiking is the fast track to the nation’s nature-loving soul. This being Switzerland, even the trails leading you deep into the country’s wildest, remotest corners are diligently marked, and almost every inch of the country is precisely mapped.

Switzerland? Little? Not for hikers it isn’t. As the Swiss delight in reminding you, the country’s 62,500km (38,836 miles) of trails would be enough to wrap around the globe 1.5 times. Alpine hikers fall hard for the high-level trails in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden , which notch up the challenge and floor you with phenomenal scenery. Yet lowland areas like the vineyards of Valais and the gently rolling hills of Appenzell are equally atmospheric and accessible virtually all year long.

Picking Switzerland’s best hikes is kid-in-a-candy-shop stuff. Still, here are nine favorites to whet your appetite.

Three people stand in front of Bachalpsee during a hike on the Faulhornweg in Switzerland

1. Faulhornweg

Best day hike 15km (9.3 miles) one way, 5 hours, moderate

Mother Nature pulled out all the stops in the Bernese Oberland, and the Faulhornweg might be the best day hike to take it all in. This moderately challenging ridge hike throws you in the scenic deep end. Beginning and ending on a high, you’ll take in the full glittering sweep of Lakes Thun and Brienz as you trudge from Schynige Platte to First, and colossal peaks like the dagger-shaped Wetterhorn and the big three of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau .

Navigation-wise, the trail is easy enough to follow. From Schynige Platte, the walk eases you in gently, heading over rolling pastures before rising more abruptly to scree slopes, boulder-strewn passes and high moors. You’ll make a steeply rising traverse along a broad ledge between stratified cliffs to the ridge of Winteregg, before turning off to the summit of 2681m (8796ft) Faulhorn. Here you’re in for a treat, with 360-degree views reaching across a sea of mountains to the Black Forest in Germany and Vosges in France on clear days. Keep an eye out for marmots as you descend to the grassy basin of the Bachalpsee, where a steel-blue lake contrasts starkly with the ice-shrouded peaks of Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn.

2. Lakes of Macun

Best hike in a national park 22km (14 miles) one way, 8 hours, moderate

For a glimpse of the Swiss Alps before the dawn of tourism, there’s no place like the nature-gone-wild  Swiss National Park in  The Engadine in Graubünden, where Switzerland muscles its way into Italy. Squished into a remote corner of the country’s southeast, this off-the-radar national park punches high on every level. It’s often so silent that the only sound you’ll hear is that of your own footsteps.

Of all the trails threading through the wilds, this demanding full-day hike from Lavin to Zernez has the edge, weaving up to the glacial cirque of Macun, necklaced with almost two dozen lakes of sapphire, azure and turquoise blue. The snow-capped Bernese, Silvretta and Ortler Alps hog the horizon. Ibex are in their element in these peaks, and with luck and patience you might spot them. The trail becomes tougher, rockier and more exposed as you ascend steep slopes to Fuorcletta da Barcli, a gap in the range at 2850m (9350ft), with top-of-the-world views. The descent to Zernez leads through avalanche grids to meet an Alpine track, twisting through forest to reach Zernez, where you can either stay the night or take the train back to Lavin.

Planning tip: Getting an early start is essential. The walk requires sure-footedness and a good head for heights because some sections are lofty and exposed. Snowfields can linger into summer on the upper reaches.

3. Gemmi Pass

Best hike over a mountain pass 13km (8 miles) one way, 5 hours, challenging

If you think hiking the Gemmi Pass is tough today, spare a thought for those first intrepid travelers who crossed it as part of Thomas Cook’s first forays into the Swiss Alps in 1863. Linking the Valaisian spa resort of Leukerbad to the cute-as-a-button Alpine resort of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland, the hike is easily doable in a day, but nevertheless presents a proper challenge, as it involves 1050m (3445ft) of ascent through stark, rocky and at times steep and exposed mountains.

Your reward for the effort to reach the pass is bleakly beautiful lake Daubensee at 2205m (7234ft) and a clifftop lookout platform next to Wildstrubel Restaurant, floating 900m (2953ft) above the valley and affording top-of-the-beanstalk views of the high, perennially snow-frosted mountains of Valais, which hover around the 4000m (13,123ft) mark. At lower elevations, the trail weaves through flower-freckled pastures. Afterward, hop back on the train to Leukerbad to give your feet a soaking in its thermal hot springs, which have views out to the peaks.

Planning tip:  While the path is safe and well maintained, be sure to check the forecast before you venture up.

4. Via Alpina

Best multi-day hike 390km (242 miles) one way, 20 days, challenging

The Via Alpina is the big one: an epic 20-stage trek that takes you from the castle-topped principality of Liechtenstein in the east to Montreux , dreamily set on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the west. Embarking on the whole thing is a serious undertaking: you’ll need to be sure-footed, have a head for heights and experience in navigating using a map and compass because you’ll be grappling with 14 Alpine passes. The highest of these is Hohtürli at 2778m (9114ft) in the Bernese Oberland, reached via a steep wooden ladder hacked into the rock face and secured with iron chains.

The descent is no less dramatic, dropping more than 1000m (3281ft) to Lake Oeschinen above Kandersteg, a celestial vision of cerulean blue ringed by snow-streaked mountains and fed by the glacial waters of the Blüemlisalp peaks.

Via Alpina is a proper journey into remote wilderness, with nights spent camping beneath starry skies or at rustic mountain huts, plentiful chances to spot wildlife like chamois, ibex and golden eagles, wild swims and entrancing sunrises and sunsets.

Planning tip: The route requires some advance planning and is best hiked from June to September, dodging the snow and wet or foggy conditions with bad visibility.

Climber on rock face over Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland

5. Aletsch Glacier route

Best hike on a glacier 17km (10.5 miles) one way, 6 hours, challenging

Switzerland bombards you with out-of-this-world scenery, and few places leave you speechless like the Aletsch Glacier , a moraine-streaked, deeply crevassed 23km(14-mile)-long superhighway of ice powering through some of the highest mountains in the country. You can’t quite suppress the gasp of wonder while hiking alongside the largest glacier in the Alps, particularly on a sunny day when great daggers of peaks razor 4000m (13,123ft) above the ice into a searingly blue sky.

Hands down one of the most astonishing day hikes in Switzerland, this route takes you from Fiescheralp to Bettmeralp, with front-row views of the Aletsch Arena peaks. The Fieschergletscher is the prelude to the big one. Snaking down from the eastern flank of Grosses Fiescherhorn, a razor-edge peak at 4049m (13,284ft), this 16km (10-mile) swirl of eternal ice is the second-biggest glacier in the Alps. From here, the route winds around slopes and up through a rock-strewn gully, gradually steepening as it negotiates switchbacks up to a remote valley, its mountain hut  and Märjelensee, a milky turquoise splash of a lake buttressed by immense mountains and the rim of the Aletsch Glacier.

The Aletsch Glacier is now your constant companion, as the trail skirts the deeply crevassed ice. Swiss stone pine forest and glittering tarns soften the Alpine picture as you continue along a ridge to the grassy slopes of Moosfluh, where a strategically placed bench offers staggering glacier views. Soon after, you’ll reach the glass-blue lake of Blausee. From here, it is just a stone’s throw to Bettmeralp.

6. Rigi Panorama Trail

Best accessible hike 7km (4 miles) one way, 2 hours, easy

JMW Turner was so smitten by Rigi that in 1842 he painted the mountain in three different lights to reflect its changing moods. Flinging up above fjord-like Lake Lucerne, the 1797m/5896ft-high peak still has a magic touch today, especially when seen in the pink blush of sunrise or sunset. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mt Titlis, the glacier-encrusted Jungfrau Alps and Lake Zug.

Following a wide path that shadows the old Scheidegg Railway, this wheelchair- and stroller-accessible ridge trail from Rigi First to Rigi Scheidegg beautifully opens up the surrounding lakes, cow-grazed pastures and mountains, with plenty of options to pause for a picnic or barbecue en route.

Planning tip: Some sections are steep for wheelchairs (you’ll need good brakes), but there are options to shorten the trail should you so wish.

Two hikers hike Zermatt's Grindjisee Alpine Lake in Switzerland with the peak of Matterhorn mountain in the background

7. Höhenweg Höhbalmen

Best hike at altitude 18km (11 miles) round trip, 7 hours, moderate

Matterhorn is the mountain you can’t stop gawping at – and this circular hike in Zermatt gets you up close and personal to the beauty.

The trail threads up through larch forest on the ascent, making broad switchbacks above the Triftbach Gorge. From here, it’s a stiff uphill march to Berggasthaus Trift , at the foot of its namesake glacier, where you stay overnight to split the hike into two days if you wish.

The onward hike takes you over flower-flecked Alpine meadows, zigzagging up grassy slopes to climb onto the high balcony of Höhbalmenstaffel, where a riveting panorama unfolds. Heading west, the route traverses narrowing ledges that get astonishingly close to the north face of Matterhorn to reach Schwarzläger, the walk’s highest point at 2741m (8993ft).

From here, it’s a steady descent over the sparse mountainsides of Arben. The path winds down to meet a more prominent walking track alongside the high lateral moraine wall left by the receding Zmutt Glacier. Follow this down in zigzags through glacial rubble and continue along gentler terraces to the photogenic hamlet of Zmutt and then back to Zermatt.

Planning tip:  Pick a good-weather day and get an early start for this full-day trek, which embodies all that is unique about the Swiss Alps, leading you into another world of glittering streams, crevassed glaciers and 4000 peaks. Weather permitting, Höhenweg Höhbalmen is hikeable from June to October.

8. Kronberg Treasure Hunt Trail

Best hike for families 7km (4 miles) round trip, 3 hours, easy

Rippling across  northeastern Switzerland , the under-the-radar Appenzell Alps are a surefire winner with families. You’ll walk to the backbeat of cowbells through rolling dairy country and flower-freckled meadows. The mountains are easily accessible for those with small legs, and the towns look freshly minted for a bedtime story, with their timber-framed, prettily muralled houses.

A cable car swings up from Jakobsbad to the 1663m (5456ft) summit of Kronberg, the trailhead for this terrific family hike, which skips back down the mountain and presents challenges and clues leading to the “treasure.”

Planning tip: If you want to make a day of it, you can ramp up the adventure in the valley at the water park, adventure playground, zip-line course and bobsled run.

9. Bisse de Clavau

Best hike through vineyards 8km (5 miles) round trip, 4 hours, easy

Gentle walking trails tread quietly through staggeringly steep terraced vineyards in Valais , producer of Switzerland’s most feted wines, with many vignerons (winegrowers) throwing open their cellar doors for tasting and buying. There’s no better place to walk, taste and appreciate the grape than Sion, with its cinematic twinset of castles and raft of gourmet addresses.

And there’s far more to hiking around Sion than enticing strolling between grape-heavy vines. What makes trails in this part of the Rhône Valley unique are the bisses , miniature canals built in the 13th century to irrigate these vertiginous terraced vineyards hemmed by stone walls. This half-day hike between Sion and St-Léonard is a treat, shadowing the Bisse de Clavau, a 550-year-old irrigation channel that carries water to the thirsty, sun-drenched vineyards and commanding grandstand views of hilltop chateaux, the snaking River Rhône and the not-so-distant Alps.

Pause to sample Valaisian Dôle (red) and Fendant (white) wines, perhaps over lunch at Le Cube Varone , an old winegrower’s hut. The hike is never lovelier than on a golden fall day when the grape harvest is in full swing, when you can enjoy a  brisolée , the traditional harvest feast built around chestnuts, cheese, cold meats and vin nouveau (new wine).

Swiss Hiking on the Haute Route

This Haute Route is for those who want a more leisurely pace, finer accommodations (no huts ), daily luggage transfers, and first class rail. We've added a well-deserved rest day at a 4-star Belle Epoque hotel in historic St Luc. Then we softened the route a bit by reducing some of the most arduous ascents and eliminating the most pounding descents.

Incredible Alpine Scenery in Every Step

You still get the spectacular mountain scenery you'd expect on the Haute Route, and you'll still thrill at an abundance of glaciers as well as the finest icefalls in the Alps. You'll ascend some of our favorite Alpine passes while also taking time to explore the dendritic valleys of the Rhone. You'll come to love the rugged flanks of the Val de Bagnes, the quiet upper reaches of the Val d'Herens, and the sweeping views of the Val d'Anniviers.

You'll discover an Haute Route holding hidden treasures, rare wildlife, remote villages, and long-forgotten mountain trade routes. You won't want to miss this most memorable, enjoyable, and rewarding Alpine adventure.

Luggage Transfers so You Can Hike Light and Enjoy the Route

We shuttle your luggage, so all you need to carry is a lightweight daypack with water, snacks, and of course, your camera. The Haute Route is widely regarded as the most scenic trek in the Alps. It's an Alps hiking tour like no other.

Why an Alpenwild Haute Route Trek is the Only Logical Choice

Since we offer the Haute Route throughout the summer and have departures every week, you'll have more options and guaranteed departures than with other less-experienced operators. Our guides have more experience and an intimate knowledge of the route along with its natural history and language and culture. We stay in superb accommodations—a notch above those used by most other operators, and then we always request superior rooms with a view for our guests. We include all meals and trail snacks then feature a la carte dining most evenings. We include premium excursions such as the Gornergrat cogwheel railway as part of the trip. In short, there is not better choice for the Haute Route than Alpenwild.

Self-Guided Tours

Pizza illustration.

Self-guided tours are a great balance between the structure of a guided tour and planning a trip all on your own.

Our self-guided tours are carefully organized trips that combine the freedom to hike and travel on your own with your own personal travel planner. We’ll organize all of the reservations and logistics, buy appropriate rail passes, recommend favorite hikes and sights, and arrange a trip that meets your specifications.

There’s no guide and no group, so you’ll make your own decisions, choose your own pace, and enjoy Switzerland at your leisure. As Swiss travel specialists, we’ll fill you with knowledgeable advice and superb vacation plans. You do the rest.

If you want flexibility and privacy, we’ll give you the support you need to navigate on your own.

We describe each of your destinations in depth, noting activities and sights of particular interest, and providing you with choices for rainy days or taking a rest..

You will receive a personal information packet complete with daily itineraries, hotel confirmations, detailed hiking route descriptions, topographic maps of your hikes, train schedules, and specialized information about the regions you’ll be visiting.  Most tours include rail passes and luggage transfers.  Clients with non-US addresses, you will receive your materials digitally.

This is your personal guidebook, so we also help you with what to pack, how to get in shape for walking in the Alps, how to phone home, and what to do if your plans change en route.  And if you have any questions or need any help, we are always just a phone call away.

We have a lot of great itineraries like the Tour du Mont Blanc, Bernese Oberland Traverse and Dolomite Traverse to choose from, but our self-guided tours can be easily customized to meet your specific needs… make them longer or shorter, stay in rustic inns or luxury hotels, or a bit of both (why not)!  Choose any day to start – this is your tour.  If you can let us know your dream trip, we’ll make it work for you.

Just want to thank you for a wonderful trip to Italy’s Dolomites. Your package with hike descriptions, accommodations and other recommendations was spot on. We didn’t even get lost, which is unusual for us. Loved the food especially the Kaiserschmarrn at Gostner Schwaige. We were welcomed even though we were soaking wet. As we came out the hut the rain turned to snow. It snowed the rest of the way to Schlernhaus but made for a beautiful hike the next day with fresh snow and lots of sunshine. After that the weather was perfect. We had strudel at most every stop, which became a favorite for everyone. Will be happy to give comments or recommendations to prospective hikers. Thanks also for the additional tee-shirt. Will wear it proudly.

Words simply cannot express my excitement at receiving our travel packet.  It arrived the Friday before I flew out and I was simple blown away by the quality of resources you and your team put together.  Receiving everything before I flew out gave Scott and I a wonderful holiday to look forward to!

9 Family-Friendly Things To Do In Switzerland

S witzerland is a wonderful country with plenty to offer all its visitors, regardless of age. It’s a great destination for families traveling together because its most popular places include plenty of fun activities for both older and younger visitors.

Museums with special tours for children, vast parks, amusement centers, and themed hiking trails are just some of the few exciting adventures families can undertake together. Here’s everything you need to know about the best family-friendly activities in various parts of Switzerland!

Things to do in Switzerland

Lindt home of chocolate (zurich).

The Lindt Home of Chocolate near Zurich is one of the best destinations for families because it’s fun for kids and adults. Children will love the endless chocolate tastings, colorful pralines, and chocolate fountains. You could seriously make yourself sick from chocolate here!

At the same time, adults learn about the history of chocolate and the process of making delicious treats from cacao beans.

Lindt has done a fantastic job with the building and the museum. Not only is there a huge chocolate fountain in the foyer and a cinema down the end, it is host to the largest Lindt chocolate shop I have ever seen in Switzerland! So, get your credit card ready, as you won’t leave empty-handed.

Chocolate-making workshops are also available at this museum and are suitable for children and adults. Best of all, you can keep anything you make at the workshops.

If you’re staying near Zurich, the Lindt Home of Chocolate is accessible by bus, train, and boat.

Wow Museum in Zurich

The WOW Museum is another of my favorite museums for kids in Zurich. It is focused on visual illusions, and it’s incredibly fun for both children and adults alike. I found my godson had the most fun with the interactive exhibits, like the room of mirrors, the kaleidoscope, and the upside-down rooms. At the same time, we also enjoyed the illusions scattered throughout the museum. He will be ready for the more complicated stuff in a few years too!

Most of the exhibits at the WOW Museum are interactive and meant to be touched, except for the paintings on the walls. There are also countless photograph opportunities, so you can create unique memories to forever serve as a reminder of your family trip to Switzerland.

The museum even has a special exhibit for children under six, created because it is not yet possible to perceive illusions at such a young age. Willow, the museum imp, has four hiding places throughout the museum, and children are encouraged to look for them and create their own illusions.

JungfrauPark Interlaken

Take your kids to the Jungfrau Park in Interlaken if you want to keep them busy for an entire day while you are in the Jungfrau region. This is the largest indoor/outdoor park in the Bernese Oberland, with countless fun things for kids. The park is suitable for all children up to 10 years of age with multiple playgrounds, climbing frames, pedal karts, and slides.

There’s also an arcade center where kids can play all sorts of games, making the parents wish they were 10 again. While the children are running around having loads of fun, you can take advantage of the sun loungers on those sunnier days, or just hang out at the on-site restaurant.

Sledding at Chäserrugg

Chäserrugg is a mountain summit in northeastern Switzerland, easily accessible from Zurich, Chur, and St. Gallen. Head to the Wildhaus-Alt St Johann village in winter, where you can enjoy the ride a funicular to the summit

The mountain is quite the highlight for the adrenaline junkie (or those that like a little speed) because it features one of the longest sledding runs in all of Switzerland . It’s 5.9 kilometers, but it can be split into two sections. The upper section of the run is steeper and not the ideal activity for very young children. But it will be super fun if your kids are a bit older.

The lower section of the run is nowhere near as steep. It’s much safer and great for very young kids, but it doesn’t get as much snow as the upper section so it’s not always open.

Globi’s Treasure Hunt Trail in Engelberg

The Alpine town of Engelberg is very popular with outdoor enthusiasts, and if your family enjoys hanging out together while exploring natural attractions, this is the place to be in Switzerland. There are loads of things to do in the area from golfing to rock climbing, but kids will enjoy Globi’s Treasure Hunt the best.

It’s a hiking trail led by Globi, an iconic Swiss cartoon character. The trail is straightforward; it’s mostly downhill and takes an average of an hour and 15 minutes to complete. Globi’s Treasure Hunt is suitable for children as young as three, so there’s nothing to worry about regarding the technical difficulty of the trail.

Before they embark upon the hike, kids can have fun at the huge playground that features a waterpark, an alpine slide, and a trampoline, among other things. This is at the beginning of the trail, and then they will be given treasure maps and set out on the trail to search for hidden treasures with Globi.

Museum of Communication Bern

The Museum of Communication in Bern is the perfect destination for tech-savvy families. If your children are already into robots and computers, they will absolutely love this museum. The same goes for any adults accompanying them.

The museum focuses on different modes of communication and features exhibits on everything from the earliest post offices to futuristic video calls. It’s incredibly interesting, and they’ve even got interactive tours for kids led by their mascot, Ratatösk. The museum’s Core Exhibition is suitable for toddlers, and there are plenty of interactive exhibits even the youngest visitors can enjoy.

The museum is not only super fun but also highly educational. If you want to spend some quality time as a family but also learn something in the process, this is a great place in Bern.

Churwalden Toboggan Run

The Churwalden Toboggan Run is the longest of its kind in Switzerland. It’s a sled on rails, so it can be done in either summer or winter, provided the weather conditions allow it. Despite being the longest toboggan run in Switzerland, it’s not as dangerous as it sounds. In fact, it’s perfectly suitable for all children.

Even younger kids are welcome to come along for the ride, and children older than eight years don’t need to be accompanied by adults. The toboggan is 3km (1.9 miles) long, and it takes 7-10 minutes to complete the entire ride. During the run, you can reach speeds up to 40 km/h, which is thrilling. Or, just use the brake a lot like my godson tends to do –  just make sure the people behind you leave a little later, or they will catch you on the way down!

Chillon Castle at Veytaux

Chillon Castle is a magnificent historical landmark in Veytaux, on the shore of Lake Geneva. It’s a popular destination for day trips from Montreux, Vevey, and even as far as Geneva, so don’t miss out on this gem when you’re traveling through the south-west of Switzerland.

The castle and its history are absolutely fascinating. Visitors can tour all the rooms in the castle, most of which are thematically organized. Children are given special handouts with room descriptions upon entrance. The dungeons and the weapons room tend to be the most interesting for the younger visitors, while adults usually enjoy the entire experience.

Additionally, Chillon Castle often hosts children-focused events, including family days, discovery tours with costumed guides, and even treasure hunts in the castle. Their website is frequently updated with information on upcoming events, so be sure to check what’s happening at the castle prior to your visit.

Sensorium near Bern

The Sensorium in Walkringen is easily accessible by public transport and car from Bern. It’s a museum with interactive exhibits meant to stimulate all of your five senses. Children are encouraged to touch most of the exhibits, and there are a lot of areas where they are free to roam around and play.

Just be aware that most explanations in the museum are in French or German, so it can be a bit tricky to understand what’s going on if the kids don’t understand the language. However, I find that just using Google Translate solves most of those problems! And, nearly all exhibits are meant to be experienced visually or physically, and there’s actually very little text to be read anyway.

For those who need it, there is a big outdoor playground near the museum entrance including a very long slide, swings, and climbers.

(CNN) —  The slow approach to travel has never been more important. From overtourism to taking multiple flights, rushing from A to B isn’t just stressful, it can be environmentally damaging. Which is why, sometimes travel needs to be stripped back to basics – a pair of boots, a backpack and a map.

These mind-loosening multi-day hikes on some of Europe’s best long distance trails offer a chance to reconnect with the world, get some invigorating exercise and enjoy peaceful moments in some of the continent’s most beautiful scenery.

Hyssna Trail, Sweden

West Sweden’s quiet beauty is the star of the show on this 40-kilometer (25-mile), two-day hike. A circular route, it starts at Hyssna’s 12th century church, which can be accessed by bus from Gothenburg in just 40 minutes.

The trail passes through towering beech forests and offers the opportunity for a refreshing dip in Lilla Hålsjön lake, where there’s a dedicated swimming spot. The route is well signposted, with plenty of picnic spots and a well appointed camp site. For those in need of something a tad more luxurious, there’s the  Hyssna Forest Resort , where five star cabins feature their own outdoor showers, vast picture windows and king size beds.

Karhunkierros Trail, Finland

Finnish Lapland is renowned as a winter destination, with magical displays of  aurora borealis  and a fascinating ancient  Sami  culture. It’s also home to the 82-kilometer (51-mile) Karhunkierros Trail, the most well-known long-distance walk in Finland.

It’s a route best explored in summer, when the nights are bright and the forests verdant. The path begins in Hautajärvi village in Lapland’s Salla and ends at the Rukatunturi Fell in Kuusamo, taking four days, depending on the weather, which can change rapidly. Passing through  Oulanka National Park , there’s a sense of being in a true wilderness, where trout leap from rivers and lynx and wolverines prowl through the pines.

King Charles III England Coastal Path, England

Covering a colossal 4,300 kilometers (2,672 miles), the  England Coast Path , named after the country’s king since 2022, is a lifetime’s undertaking for those who wish to cover every step. The good news is that it can be easily broken down into sections, with northwest, northeast, east, southeast and southwest regions to explore.

Whether taking in the rugged, high cliffs and gorgeous bays of Cornwall or the vast skies and deep silence of Suffolk and Norfolk, just a few days on this epic route will leave anyone rejuvenated.

Slovenian Mountain Trail, Slovenia

hiking tour in switzerland

It’s no surprise that the  Slovenia Mountain Trail  has become so popular. This stunning route, covering some 616 kilometers (362 miles) runs from Maribor in the country’s northeast, all the way to Ankaran, on the Adriatic Coast. And while doing it all in one go over 28 days might seem extreme, it can be broken into smaller sections.

There are routes through the forests and primeval bogs of the Pohorje Hills or across the Julian Alps, much of which form part of the beautiful Triglav National Park. There are 49 different mountain huts to choose from and those opting to complete the entire trek will scale some 23 mountains in the process.

John Muir Way, Scotland

Known as the “Father of the National Parks” in the US, Muir’s passion for the outdoors led him to set up the Sierra Club, arguably America’s most important environmental organization, as well as ensuring that the Yosemite Valley gained protected status.

It isn’t just in the United States where Muir is memorialized. In his native Scotland, the  John Muir Way  stretches coast to coast, from Helensburgh on the Firth of Clyde to Dunbar, Muir’s birthplace on the Firth of Forth. The 215-kilometer (134-mile) route takes around 10 days to complete, passing through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and through some of Scotland’s most bucolic and underappreciated countryside.

Vikos Gorge and Mount Gamila, Zagoria, Greece

The remote and beautiful mountains of Zagoria are arguably Greece’s best-kept secret. Tucked away in the northwest of the country, they offer spectacular hiking without the crowds. The highlight is undoubtedly the Vikos Gorge, which according to the Guinness Book of Records is the deepest gorge relative to its width in the world.

In places, its cliffs tower 1,350 meters (4,429 feet). Wander its dry riverbed in summer and keep an eye out for rare wild chamois hopping across the cliff faces.  Trekking Hellas  offers a three-day trek including the gorge and the chance to head to a mountain refuge on nearby Mount Gamila.

Apuseni Mountains, Romania

The untamed Apuseni Mountains in western Romania, part of the wider Carpathian Range, offer an insight into a part of Europe where time still moves slowly and the way of life is steeped in tradition.

Hiking through the majestic hills and seemingly endless forests, you can see peregrine falcons circling on thermals high above, while the footprints of wolves and European brown bears point to the presence of some of the continent’s most elusive creatures.  Much Better Adventures  runs a four day snowshoeing trek through the region in winter, where guests stay with Romanian families and receive a proper local welcome.

The Camino Frances, France and Spain

The Camino de Santiago is Europe’s most famous pilgrimage route, finishing in Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region of northwest Spain. It is here where the remains of the apostle St James are said to be buried. Traditionally, pilgrims headed here from their homes from all across Europe, but now hikers have multiple ways to walk “the Camino,” whether across Spain, from Portugal or France.

The  Camino Frances  is the most popular route, starting in St. Jean in France before heading through Pamplona and Leon before arriving in Santiago. The full route can take seven weeks, or the final 100 kilometers, from Sarria, can be tackled in about six or seven days.

Alta Via Uno, Dolomites, Italy

Italy’s Dolomites are one of the most rugged and awe-inspiring ranges on the continent. Those up for the challenge can hike from Dobbiaco in the north to Belluno in the south, a 120-kilometer (75-mile) jaunt that takes nine days.

The route clambers over rocky outcrops as jagged snow covered peaks rear up all around. The region’s hospitable mountain huts offer overnight places to rest and recuperate ahead of another tough day in the hills.

It’s worth taking time to explore around Passo Falzarego, where battles were fought during World War I. Some sections have cables to help walkers cross tough terrain. Trekkers will need to be in good shape, but it’s an unforgettable experience.

Engadine Panorama Trail, Switzerland

Summers in Switzerland are the stuff of dreams for those who love to strap on their boots and set off on an adventure. With warm temperatures, wildflower meadows and looming Alps, it’s a place for a proper escape from the day-to-day.

While many routes head high into the mountains, the Engadine Panorama Trail is more sedate, ideal for beginners or those keen on something less strenuous. The 55-kilometer (34-miles) route in the southeast of the country starts in Zernez and takes in traditional villages and sparkling lakes, with spectacular Alpine views at every turn. Ibex can often be spotted climbing high above the paths, which are well signposted.

Tour du Mont Blanc, France, Italy and Switzerland

Few multi-day hikes in Europe fire the imagination like the Tour du Mont Blanc. This 11-day epic covers 170 kilometers (105 miles) over 11 days and takes in three countries - France, Italy and Switzerland - following a route around western Europe’s highest mountain.

The good news is that things are extremely well organized, with regular water fountains and refuges every few miles. However, don’t show up thinking you can just bunk down for the night after a long day’s walking: Huts and refuges require booking in advance during the busy summer months.

Hiking anticlockwise from the village of Les Houches offers relentless views of Mont Blanc.  Tour du Mont Blanc Hike  offers bespoke guidance on getting the most from the trip.

Rota Vicentina Fishermen’s Trail, Portugal

A network of single-day and multi-day paths in the Alentejo and Algarve regions in southern Portugal, the Rota Vicentina can be easily overlooked for the mountainous thrills of central Europe. But the Fisherman’s Trail, a 225-kilometer (140-mile) path which cleaves to the Atlantic coastline, offers a wild and memorable alternative.

Following routes used by fishermen to access the ocean, this trail makes its way along sandy paths and over high cliff tops, with walkers having to contend with the wind and changing weather. The reward comes in the form of azure waters and huge views, not to mention the sense of being reinvigorated by all that sea air.

Laugavegur Hiking Trail, Iceland

Inaccessible during winter, Iceland’s ethereal Laugavegur Hiking Trail opens between July and September, drawing in committed hikers from across the globe. The reason? Its landscape is unlike anything else on Earth. Shaped by glaciers and the country’s relentless volcanic activity, this is a place where it’s impossible not to feel utterly infinitesimal.

The 55-kilometer (34-mile) route is best done over four days, giving time to tackle the challenging terrain and take in the views. Highlights include bathing in the geothermal springs at Landmannalaugar, marveling at the colorful slopes of Brennisteinsalda and walking over the lush valley of Hvanngil.

Six dedicated huts and adjacent campsites are available, but booking ahead or signing up for a guided adventure as advised as the path can get busy.  Much Better Adventures  has a range of options.

Sheep’s Head Way, Cork, Ireland

Ireland doesn’t lack when it comes to lush, windswept vistas. And few can match the  Sheep’s Head Way , a 93-kilometer (57-mile route) in Cork, which takes in some of the county’s, and the country’s, most dramatic coastline.

Starting in the town of Bantry, it heads out to the Sheep’s Head peninsula and its titular lighthouse, with views  across the raging, bright blue Atlantic to the Beara and Mizen peninsulas. The route itself takes six days, but there are options to cut it short or opt for less taxing day hikes if the weather gets a little wild. Which, in this magical part of the world, it often does.
