I had taken a trip to Togo, Benin and Ghana with this company a few years ago and it had been well executed. Sadly the quality of their services has gone down. The company they subcontracted to in Alaska had us in good lodges Winterlake and Tutka Bay but the transfers were terrible until I complained and then Geographic Expeditions was still not helpful. Nor were they helpful when I contacted one of their local people (Lindsay Mondschein) about a flight they had booked for me. Fortunately the company they subcontracted to (Within the Wild) is family run and when I complained they went to far as to send their son in law for a 4 am transfer to the airport in Anchorage. I can book myself into good lodges but what I expect when I contract with a company like GeoEx is a seamless experience and that is not what I got from them. They are good at selling (the person who sold me the trip, Kim Keating, was on the phone with me constantly until I booked) but then they transferred me to Daniel and then later added Linda de la Torre and I never knew who was in charge, not that it would have mattered much..... Thumbs down. Don't plan on using them again.

Hi Francoise, Thank you for sharing your comments on your recent trip. I’m sorry that you had problems with your transfers and communications. We take your feedback seriously and acted on it immediately. This transfer company will not be used again for our guests and we’re working to ensure the correct primary contacts are clear. We recently had the opportunity to return to Africa and hit up some of the countries we missed the previous trip. Our first week, in South Africa, was covered...so I wanted to go with a solid company to hit up Botswana and Zambia. We'd used Kensington Tours before, but had a rather sour taste in our mouth from the experience. The FIRST thing we discovered is that Wilderness Safaris (and Wilderness Air) pretty much locked down Botswana - everyone uses them, so it made choices a bit easier. After a month or so of interviews, we ended up going with GeoEx. They gave us reasonable pricing, and were VERY prompt at addressing specific questions. After signing with them, they promptly sent us specific info about our trip, including a complete (but prelim) itinerary. Bonus - a month before we left, we got a care package from them. It included two HEAVY duty canvas rucksacks, a nice guide book on Botswana and Zambia, and reading material for the plane (of course, the plot was centered in Botswana). It also included our final itinerary. And finally, it included a nice touch - a "free" emergency insurance plan, in case "something" happened with in the bush. We completed the trip - no issues, no hassles, everything was spot on. After our return, Starla (our agent) reached out to us to check on the trip - nice touch!). DEFINITELY would use them again, and absolutely recommend them with no reservations.

I just came back from the most amazing trip to Africa. I spent 2 1/2 weeks travelling around South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana to go on safari with a few days in Capetown at the end. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect and this was my first trip to a developing country and to my first time letting someone else plan anything for me. Geoex did a better job than I could have ever done planning this trip. I didn't have to think or stress about anything during the planning phase, which ended up being a big relief. They worked out all the details, were great communicators and even included free emergency insurance. Thankfully I didn't need it, but it made my family feel a lot better knowing that if there were any issues I would be air lifted out. On to the best part, the actual trip! From the moment I landed everything was seamless including all the travel between safari camps, which is no small task considering there are no real roads in the bush. The camps Geoex chose were ecofriendly, had great amenities, an extremely knowledgable staff and in prime locations. In Botswana I was right on the Okavango delta and there were hippos in the water outside my room. In Zimbabwe I'd wake up every morning to antelope and zebras hanging out at the watering hole 100 yards away. The food was also good at all the locations, which is something I was worried about. I have dietary restrictions and often end up eating protein bars, but Geoex let the camps know ahead of time and they took special care to make sure I always had options. Overall, Geoex was great to work with and I will absolutely use them again.

My son and I wanted to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and we contacted Geographic Expeditions to arrange a private trip for the two of us. The price GE gave us was $16,000 for an 8-day climb---steep, but I could afford it so I didn't complain, at least not initially. But the trip was very badly planned by GE and the local Tanzanian tour guides were ripped off by GE, so in the end I became very unhappy with GE. For starters, all GE did for $16,000 was send me an itinerary typed on nice paper in an attractive portfolio and then sub-contract the trip to local outfitters---who they paid only $1,600. When I got back from the trip, I told GE I didn't mind paying $16,000, but why did they keep 90% of the fee and pay the outfitter who actually did the trip so little [the baggage carriers were making $7 a day!]. I said, why don't you pay them a decent wage? The GE President said, "Don't tell me how to run my business." The hike itself was badly conceived by GE. First, they started us hiking at 6,500' through a mosquito-infested jungle, ankle-deep in mud. After two days of miserable hiking, we crested a hill at 11,000' to see buses bringing people into a trailhead! Later, I asked GE why they started our trip at such a low elevation and they said, "To acclimatize you to elevation." This explanation was totally absurd because no one needs "acclimatization" at 6,500' [[I've never had any acclimatization issues below 16,000']. It would have been far better to avoid the mud-slog, start at 11,000' and stay an extra day at the camps at 11,000' or 13,000' to acclimatize at elevation. Then, GE planned for us to climb Kili and spend the night on the top, but when I asked our trip guide what he thought of that idea, he said it was "crazy." "If you want to get altitude sickness, sleeping overnight on the top is the way to do it," he said. Along the trail, I asked every guide I met the same question and every one gave me the same answer---sleeping on the top would seriously increase the chance of altitude sickness and they strongly recommended against it, so we made a mid-course correction and camped at 15,500' before the final ascent. Later, I confronted the President of GE with this information and he insisted, "I know what I'm doing." I responded, "Who should I believe---20 mountain guides who climb Kilimanjaro every week or some desk jockey in San Francisco?" He said he didn't want to talk any more about it. GE doesn't handle criticism very well. The mountain itself is quite beautiful, even more beautiful than I expected, but the climb is marred by a huge amount of trash on the trails and in the campsites, and everyone has to camp at designated campsites, so you end up camping with 100-200 people around you, amidst trash and garbage. It is still well worth doing, but not with Geographic Expeditions!

We travelled with GeoEx to Cuba and regrettably were very disappointed with GeoEx's guides and overall quality. We had anticipated a high quality experience based on the GeoEx description, more limited number of attendees and cost. Our guide, Duni, however, was highly unprofessional (although the locally mandated Cuban government guide was excellent). Duni was not the expert GeoEx had promised as a cut above other companies-- he was divisive and simplistic. And, GeoEx's local contact, Michael Sykes, was rude and aggressive when we complained that our guide had abandoned us in Old Havana at night. GeoEx did not follow up or inquire about why we had a bad experience. We would not use GeoEx again, which is unfortunate, since we had high expectations and would prefer a hands on and expert company for specialized travel.

I cast my fate to the wind last year and traveled with GeoEx to Patagonia. Needless to say the experience was nothing short of amazing and every detail was worked out. So, we again booked with GeoEx to Bhutan. This trip was as good maybe better (if that possible) our direct contact Simon at GeoEx was great. Our guide was amazing and our driver was - out of this world. The Inns were superb! We were treated like royalty! I GeoEx!

Just finished my second trip with GeoEx to Bhutan. They have very strong capabilities in this part of the world and have been my go-to people for excusions of this sort in Asia. Everything was exactly as described and I never had to worry about a thing from the moment I got on the plane to Paro. In addition to 2 Bhutan trips, I've also used GeoEx for a trip to Nepal and a private journey in Japan. My spouse once used them for a month-long private journey in New Zealand where her itineary was practically the size of a phone book - she still talks about that trip. I can't attest to their capabilities in other parts of the world, but they have been my first call for excusions to Asian destinations. Plus, how can you not get wanderlust by simply looking at their catalogue ... ?

Just back from a fabulous trip to Cuba with Geo Ex- our second trip with them and even better than the first. Great time to go with Cuba, and we all agreed that this was the way to do it. Highlights were talks with economists and writers, dance productions and great food in local paladares! Go now!

I have traveled with GeoEx for the past 22 years. I have traveled alone, in a private group in a custom trip or in a large group...and the experience has been consistently EXCELLENT. They know their destinations, select the best operator, and have used every bit of feedback I have given over the years to prepare fantastic trips around the world: Bhutan, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Galapagos, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Siberia, Tanzania, South Africa, Egypt and so many other magical adventures. GeoEx is a professional organization, who understands what the traveler needs and uses all its resources to make it happen. GeoEx consistently has exceeded my expectations and those of the travelers with me. I look forward to any opportunity to travel with them again!

Geographic Expeditions is a top notch travel company. I have travelled with them four times, and each trip was most memorable. They are very detail oriented and are always there to answer your questions. On each trip everything ran like clockwork. They always have very knowledgeable group leaders and guides and use fine hotels. My last trip was this October/November and consisted of a group trip to Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal (Himalayan Kingdoms), and then I continued on a private excursion to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Bangkok, Thailand - thirty-six days total. It was a fabulous trip. Not one time did I think it was getting too long. Even after 36 days I could have kept going. Errin Mixon was my trip coordinator, and needless to say she did a first rate job. I certainly will use their services again for further trip, and I highly recommend them

Collaborative Projects

Geo.X promotes the initial planning and preparation of proposals for collaborative projects, thus providing incentives for Geo.X scientists to take the lead in coordinated programs.  Currently, no new applications can be submitted.

Eligibility Requirements

Geo.X supports scientists, who take the leading/coordinating role within a new project consortium, in the preparation phase of proposals for

  • EU- und ERC-Projects: Framework Program “Horizon 2020” Funding Program “Synergy Grant”
  • Coordinated programs of the DFG: Collaborative Research Centers, Priority Programs, Research Training Groups, Research Units
  • Joint projects from the federal framework programs.

For EU and ERC proposals, taking over the coordinating function is crucial . In the DFG and BMBF / BMWi / BMUB / BMEL / BMVI applications the involvement of at least  two additional Geo.X partner institutions is a further basic condition. Interdisciplinary research approaches are explicitly welcome.

Eligible applicants are scientists from one of the Geo.X partner institutions.

Extent of Funding

The application for these programs will be supported with a maximum of € 20,000 if one of the Geo.X-institutions takes over the coordination, and the project share of the participating Geo.X-partner institutions totals at least € 500,000. The use of funds is left to the responsibility of the applicants (personnel costs or material costs for project initiation) but must undoubtedly serve the application mentioned above.

In two-phase processes initially € 10,000 will be supplied for the preparation of the pre-proposal. After an invitation to submit a full proposal, the balance amounting to additional € 10,000 will be provided.

Application procedure

Instructions on requested documents and personal specifications are given in the application form. The submission of applications is possible within the given deadlines.

The decision is made by the Geo.X Steering Committee according to criteria for

  • the relevance to the Geo.X key topics and cross-cutting issues,
  • potential of the project to foster collaboration within Geo.X, and
  • the interdisciplinary nature of the proposed research approach

Declaration of commitment

The applicant agrees to indicate that the preparation of the submitted proposal has been financially supported by Geo.X, according to the Geo.X Funding Acknowledgement .

A copy of the submitted proposal must also be handed in to the Geo.X Head Office.

Summary Report for rejected project proposals

It is assumed that funding will have positive effects on networking between the Geo.X partner institutions even in the case of a negative review result. Therefore, a brief report will be requested, showing whether the joint initiative will at least be maintained in parts.

Application deadlines

Currently, no new applications can be submitted. Thanks for your understanding.

Promotion of early career scientists

Geo.X supports the application of Geo.X scientists in the postdoc stage of their scientific careers. There is a particular focus on the application in highly competitive programs. Currently, no new applications can be submitted.

Eligibility conditions

The funding supports the application of Geo.X scientists in programs of the DFG, EU, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Volkswagen Foundation, BMBF for the Promotion of Young Scientists.

  • All DFG proposal submission options for individual funding for Post-doctoral researchers ( funding programmes at a glance )
  • BMBF Junior Research Groups

Volkswagen Foundation:

  • Lichtenberg Professorships
  • ERC Starting Grants
  • Marie Curie Program

Einstein Foundation:

  • Einstein-Junior-Fellowship

The proposed projects are intended to promote scientific cooperation within the Geo.X network. Ideally, interdisciplinary research approaches will stimulate geoscientific cooperation with other scientific disciplines.

Eligible applicants are early career scientists who

  • are employed at one of the Geo.X partner institutions at the time of application,
  • submit an application to the programs mentioned above, and
  • involve at least two partner institutions in their research projects.

Geo.X funding comprises a researcher position according to the German TV-L E13 (100%) and is awarded for a 3-month period. The participation of the applicant Geo.X partner institution by providing co-funding to at least an equivalent period and amount is crucial.

Even the Geo.X financed employment must take place according to the individual conditions of the applicant institution.

Instructions on requested documents and personal specifications are given in the application guide . The submission of applications is possible within the given deadlines.

Currently, no new applications can be submitted. Thanks for your understanding.

Application Guideline

Travel grants

Geo.x conference travel grant for early career scientists.

One of the aims of Geo.X is to support collaborative research between its partner institutes. In this context, Geo.X provides travel grants to doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers to support their participation in national and international conferences and workshops.

B. Conditions and Eligibility

Doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers who are employed at one of the Geo.X partner institutions are eligible to apply for a Geo.X Early Career Scientist (ECS) travel grant. Proposals must have applicants affiliated exclusively with at least two Geo.X partners (i.e. at least one co-applicant may not be affiliated with the applicant's home institute). The supervisor of the doctoral candidates must be a scientist at one of the Geo.X partner institutions.

The travel grant is awarded for participation in conferences and workshops with thematic relevance to the core Geo.X research fields ( https://www.geo-x.net/en/mission/ ).

Doctoral candidates are requested to submit a letter of support from their supervisor together with the application form. The letter of support must underline the significance of the conference or workshop for the field of research of the doctoral candidate and confirm the financial need of a travel grant.

Attendance in national and international conferences and workshops is supported if the applicant plays an active role in the conference or workshop. This usually takes the form of a contributed oral presentation or poster and/or participation in conference/workshop organization. Applicants must specify their contribution on their application form. If the travel grant is used for a workshop, the Geo.X Head Office might ask for an experience report or an introduction into the field or method the candidates gained new knowledge in.

Doctoral and post-doctoral candidates who receive Geo.X travel grants must acknowledge Geo.X financial support in their conference/workshop contributions. For this, please use the Geo.X logo and acknowledgement, which can be downloaded under the following link: https://www.geo-x.net/downloads/

Geo.X acknowledgement: "This contribution was financially supported by Geo.X, the Research Network for Geosciences in Berlin and Potsdam"

Following the conference or workshop, the contribution (presentation slides or poster) is to be submitted in electronic form (usually PDF), at the latest 4 weeks after the conference or workshop ends , to the Geo.X head office: travelgrants @ geo-x.net and to the Geo.X coordinator of your institution ( https://www.geo-x.net/en/the-network/contact-person/ ).

Submitted contributions are used for internal documentation only and will not be made public.

C. Application deadline

D. Funding:

a) For national conferences and workshops:

Travel grants of up to 250 € are awarded to support participation in conferences and workshops taking place in Germany.

b) For international conferences and workshops:

Travel grants of up to 500 € are awarded to support participation in international conferences and workshops.

E. Disbursement of the travel grants

Travel must be approved by the host Geo.X partner. The payment of the trip occurs via travel expense reimbursement through the host Geo.X partner. Geo.X support must therefore be declared to the host Geo.X partner's administration.

Travel grants are not transferable to other trips or events or to another person. If the research stay is cancelled or changed, then the travel grant is revoked.

F. Application procedure:

Before submitting an application for a Geo.X ECS travel grant, please contact the Geo.X coordinator of your institution. The responsible coordinator can be found under the following link: https://www.geo-x.net/en/the-network/contact-person/

The final application must be forwarded to the Geo.X coordinator of your institution. Please submit your application in a single PDF file.

Geo.X coordinators will notify applicants from their institute of the results of the evaluation by e-mail.

G. Duration of the supporting measure

The Conference Travel Grant for Early Career Scientists terms are valid from the 4/1/2017 until the 30/11/2021.

Geo.X Travel Grant for Outgoing Early Career Scientist

Currently, no new applications can be submitted.  Thanks for your understanding.

Why Are Geox Shoes So Expensive? Worth It Or Not?

Do you find yourself asking why are Geox shoes so expensive? Sure, they promise breathable comfort, stylish designs and quality craftsmanship – but are they worth the high price tag?

Why Are Geox Shoes So Expensive

Today we’re taking a closer look at what makes Geox shoes special and why they may be more of an investment than just another pair of kicks.

We’ll discuss what sets them apart from other brands in terms of construction, materials used, and much more – giving you an informed overview to help determine if these designer shoes are right for you!

Top 4 Reasons: Why Are Geox Shoes So Expensive?

Why a pair of shoes that seem so simple could cost so much? We did some digging and found out that there are actually several reasons behind the high price tag of Geox shoes.

Why Are Geox Shoes So Expensive 2

Here are the top four reasons why Geox shoes are so expensive:

1) High Advertising Costs:

Like any product, advertising is a large part of getting the word out about Geox shoes. In order to reach its target market, Geox spends a lot of money on marketing and advertising campaigns.

In just 20 years, Geox grew to be the most well-known casual shoe company in Italy. It now has 1,150 stores and 30,000 employees in 114 countries. But the amount of money they spend on advertising could explain why their shoes and accessories are so expensive.

This includes everything from traditional methods like TV commercials to more modern methods like social media ads. All of this costs money, and that cost is ultimately passed on to the consumer.

2) Research and Development:

A lot of time and effort goes into developing new technologies for Geox shoes.

For example, at Geox’s headquarters in Montebelluna, a team of hardworking engineers, chemists, and physicists work hard to make sure that their research into how sweat and heat are made by physical activity is successful. And their patented “breathable” soles took years to perfect.

Geox shoes are designed with ergonomic features, plush insoles, and ultralight construction in order to provide optimal support for orthotics.

Also, they are always working on new designs and styles to keep up with current fashion trends. All this research and development costs money, which is reflected in the prices of their products.

3) Sustainable Material:

Geox uses high-quality, sustainable materials in their shoes. These shoes are good for the environment because they are made from recycled plant-based and animal-free materials. They have a ReEVA outsole, a ReCotton lining, and a FreeBio TM upper. Everything in the capsule range, from the outsole to the packaging, is made with certified sustainable materials.

These materials are more expensive than synthetic alternatives, but they’re also more durable and environment friendly.

4) Waterproof and Breathable Shoes:

One of the most popular features of Geox shoes is that they are both waterproof and breathable. This means that they can be worn in all sorts of weather conditions without damaging the shoes or making your feet sweaty.

The Amphibiox technology technology that makes this possible is actually quite complex, and it’s one of the things that makes Geox shoes so expensive.

Are Geox Shoes Good For Walking?

Yes, Geox shoes are definitely good for walking! They’re comfortable and lightweight, which makes them ideal for walking long distances.

Are Geox Shoes Good For Walking

Plus, their unique design means that your feet will stay cool and dry even if you’re walking in hot weather.

Are Geox Shoes Good For Feet?

Yes, Geox shoes are definitely good for feet! They have been designed with comfort and support in mind, featuring a unique ‘breathable sole’ which allows air to circulate around the foot and keep it dry.

This helps to reduce odours caused by moisture and bacteria build-up, as well as helping to prevent fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. In addition, their ergonomic design provides excellent posture support with an anatomically correct footbed that is designed to reduce stress in key areas of the foot.

All of these features make Geox shoes a great all-in-one solution for those suffering from any sort of discomfort or pain related to their feet.

Are Geox Shoes Good For Toddlers?

Yes, Geox shoes are also good for toddlers! Their soft soles are perfect for little feet, and they’re available in a wide range of sizes, so you can find the perfect pair for your child.

Plus, they’re super easy to put on and take off, which is always a bonus when you’ve got a wriggly toddler!

Are Geox Respira Shoes Waterproof?

No, unfortunately, Geox Respira shoes are not waterproof. However, they are made from water-resistant materials, so they’ll still keep your feet dry in a little rain or snow.

If you’re looking for a pair of waterproof shoes from Geox, we recommend checking out their Aquatech (Geox’s Amphibiox™) range.

Are Geox Shoes Made In Italy?

The company was founded in Italy in 1995, and its shoes are now sold all over the world. Even though GEOX is sold as an Italian brand, it is made outside Italy (its raw materials, technology, and design are Italian).

On the other hand, Italian technicians oversee each step of the process and store the shoes in Italy so that the quality of the shoes can be controlled. This means that you can be sure that your Geox shoes are made to the highest possible standards.

Where Can I Buy Geox Shoes?

Geox shoes are available from a wide range of online and offline retailers. You can buy them directly from the Geox website or other online retailers, such as Amazon or eBay.

If you’d prefer to try them on before you buy them, you can also find them in many high-street stores, such as Selfridges or John Lewis.

Are Geox Shoes Worth It?

We think so! Yes, they are slightly more expensive than some other brands on the market, but they’re definitely worth the extra money.

Thanks to their unique design and high-quality materials, they offer unbeatable comfort and breathability.

Plus, with a wide range of styles available for both men and women, there’s sure to be a pair of Geox shoes that’s perfect for you!

What Shoes Are Comparable To Geox?

Geox’s competitors and similar companies are:

  • Taizhou Baolite Shoes,
  • Rocky Brands
  • Lorna Jane.

Conclusion:

We hope that this blog post has helped you learn more about Geox shoes and decide whether or not they’re right for you. If you’re looking for a comfortable, breathable pair of shoes that will last you for years to come, we think that Geox is definitely worth considering!

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades.

Late Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared that the Earth was experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm. This is the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003.

NOAA warns several waves of flares will slam into the Earth over the next few hours and days, potentially disrupting communications and navigation, triggering power outages and damaging satellites. The 2003 event briefly knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center says that this latest storm may induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

On social media, posters were putting up photos of bright auroras visible across Russia , Scandinavia , the U.K . and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as Coronal Mass Ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several are headed directly towards our planet.

"We have high confidence that a series of coronal mass ejections ... are directed right towards Earth," says Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center told reaporters early Friday.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

While they expect the storm to be large, there's still a lot of uncertainty about what the other effects could be, Dahl says.

"I wouldn't want to speculate on that," Dahl says.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more dependent on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

Steenburgh says it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh says.

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves: "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," says Dahl. The largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keep some flashlights and a radio handy, he says.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Strongest solar action in a decade impacting Earth right now

Aurora viewers will want to keep their eyes to the sky this weekend as a solar flare from the Sun is impacting Earth right now. Current forecasts indicate this storm will continue into Saturday morning across North America.

Skies across the U.S. were lit in a spectacular, colorful glow at levels not seen in years or decades as massive solar flares slammed into Earth on Friday.

Northern Light displays, typically relegated to states along the Canadian border during a typical geomagnetic storm, reached as far as the Gulf Coast, with pink, green and purple skies reported in Florida, Texas and Alabama.

The SWPC says satellites observed conditions that reached level 5 on their 5-point scale of geomagnetic activity on Friday evening, noted as an "extreme" event and the first such storm to reach that level since October 2003.  While conditions have since drifted back to a level 4 storm Saturday morning, more geomagnetic activity is heading Earth's way over the weekend from additional solar flares, possibly lasting into early next week.

NOAA observed yet another massive X-class solar flare released from the Sun on Friday evening, rating it as X5.4 on their scale, among the strongest flares of recent activity.

SEE MORE: EXTREME GEOMAGNETIC STORM TRIGGERS JAW-DROPPING AURORAS AROUND THE WORLD

Aside from brilliant and widespread displays of the aurora, geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations, the SWPC says. The last time Earth experienced a Level 5 geomagnetic event, there were power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa.

THE HISTORY OF EARTH'S GREATEST SOLAR STORMS

"We have notified all of our infrastructure operators that we coordinate with, such as satellite operators, communication folks, and of course, the power grid here in North America," SWPC coordinator Shawn Dahl said Friday. "So they are able and prepared to take mitigation efforts as much as possible throughout this event if it should unfold to the levels that we currently are anticipating."

SpaceX's Starlink service warned on its website Saturday morning that it was experiencing "degraded service," though it didn't give further details. Yet SpaceX head Elon Musk had earlier posted on X that the Starlink satellites were under a lot of pressure due to the geomagnetic storm and were still holding up.

Massive sunspot 17 times the size of Earth creating multiple flares

Two massive sunspots have recently merged and spit out at least three X-class (largest) and several M-class (second-largest) solar flares . According to NOAA, the explosive acceleration of charged and superheated plasma, known as a coronal mass ejection or CME, speeds through space and expands.

The new sunspot is 17 times the diameter of the Earth.

"These two sunspot clusters are magnetically complex and much larger than Earth. Together they have been the source of frequent M-class flares (minor to moderate)," stated the Space Weather Prediction Center. "RGN 3664 (the combined sunspot region) continues to grow and increase in magnetic complexity and has evolved into a higher threat of increased solar flare risk."

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured these images of the solar flares — as seen in the bright flashes in the left image (May 8 flare) and the right image (May 7 flare). The image shows a subset of extreme ultraviolet light that highlights the extremely hot material in flares and which is colorized in orange.

(NASA/SDO / NOAA)

Amid the multiple solar flares, NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven CMEs from the sun, with the first impacts arriving early Friday afternoon ET. Heightened solar conditions are expected to persist perhaps as long as Sunday.

"This is an unusual and potentially historic event," the SPWC stated.

WHAT IS A GEOMAGNETIC STORM?

Another sunspot also released strong CMEs this week and continues to be active. According to NOAA, the bulk of five CMEs will collide with Earth in a glancing blow as early as midday Friday through Sunday.

How flares can set off geomagnetic storms

"Flares are when the sun brightens, and we see the radiation, and that's kind of the muzzle flash," explained Professor Peter Becker of George Mason University in an earlier interview. "And then the cannon shot is the coronal mass ejection (CME) . So, we can see the flash, but then the coronal mass ejection can go off in some random direction in space, but we can tell when they're actually going to head towards Earth. And that gives us about 18 hours of warning, maybe 24 hours of warning before those particles get to Earth and start messing with Earth's magnetic field."

NOAA warns of a wide area blackout of high-frequency radio communications for hours. The geomagnetic storm could also cause widespread voltage irregularities in power systems, which trigger false alarms on security devices, cause drag on low earth orbit satellites preventing them from orienting and cause range errors and a loss-of-lock for GPS systems.

X-class solar flares are the largest explosions in the solar system. According to NASA, the biggest X-class flares can produce as much energy as 1 billion atomic bombs. M-class flares are the second-strongest flares, and they can cause minor radiation storms and harm astronauts.

Solar cycle peaking , making solar storms more plentiful

Tree rings and ice cores are evidence of much larger solar superstorms in the past.

In 1859, the great Carrington Event, generally regarded as Earth's greatest solar storm in recent history, covered nearly the entire planet in aurora.  About 14,000 years ago, a solar flare, possibly hundreds of times stronger than the Carrington flare, impacted Earth.

Friday's aurora was visible across much of Europe. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center classified the event as a G5, the highest level on its geomagnetic storm scale.

NOAA forecasts the current 11-year solar cycle to peak sometime in 2024 or early 2025, and solar activity is likely to remain active for the next several months or even a few years.
