Are you eager to get away from it all? (We’re sure everyone is—2020 has presented its fair share of challenges!) Do you need a break in your routine? Or maybe you’re searching for direction? Gap semester programs abroad could be your answer!

gap semester programs abroad

We hear you—a year abroad is a huge commitment! Enter: gap semesters.

Break out of the mundane, gain work experience, travel to the far corners of the world, volunteer your time, and learn something new along the way. Ultimately, get lost in inspiration and feel refreshed and focused for whatever exciting path comes next!

What is a gap semester? How does it compare to a gap year?

What is a gap semester and what does “gap” mean? Gap stands for “get abroad, pronto!” Actually, no, it doesn’t. But, it could! What a gap semester really means is having a gap in time or, more simply, some time off from your regularly scheduled programming.

It could potentially be a reset or pathfinding opportunity for those in between high school and college, those in the midst of their college studies, or even those recent college grads who aren’t quite ready to jump into the 9-5 routine post-graduation.

Gap semester programs for college students (and sometimes high school students) are shorter than a full gap year, still allow for growth, exploration, and (of course) fun, but in a shortened period of time.

You could learn a new language while taking in the world around you or dabble in different volunteer sectors to explore causes that you’re passionate about. No matter the time frame you’re working with, why not take it? You deserve it and you’ll benefit from it!

To begin, you may be lending a hand to giant sea turtle and sea lion conservation efforts before shifting to early childhood development or sports coaching opportunities. Additionally, si tú no hablas español , no problem! You’ll receive tailored Spanish classes to help you no matter how much (or little!) you currently know. All the while, enjoy island life and immersing yourself in the local community during your stay on San Cristobal.

Questions About Gap Year Abroad

A gap year is a rewarding and empowering experience for students.

Senior year of high school is filled with commotion and stress, and taking a gap year before college can be  just what a student needs to:

  • Avoid academic burnout
  • Perform better in college classes
  • Gain independence, maturity, and time-management skills
  • Have better clarity on their next steps in life

CIEE gap year benefits also include a more global perspective, intercultural skills, language immersion, and life-long friendships.

With deferred admission,  participating in a gap year program would not affect college enrollment.

Deferred admission means that a student is delaying their college enrollment for a semester or an academic year. During this time, students  remain admitted despite not yet attending classes.

Before going on a gap year program, students should:

  • Apply to college first
  • Receive their acceptance letter
  • Confirm their attendance and defer admission with their college

Most U.S. colleges and universities make it easy to defer admission by including it as an option when confirming attendance.

To plan for a gap year, students should first  identify their goals. Whether it is to travel, explore a career field, or learn a language, it can take a few months of planning.

CIEE gap year abroad programs are designed to help students make the most of their gap year by  providing a structured experience abroad. Students get to know a new country, learn a new language, live with a carefully-screened host family, and have local CIEE staff support every step of the way.

To help students start planning their gap year, CIEE Enrollment Coordinators answer questions live on virtual presentations throughout the year.

CIEE gap year students often fundraise to help fund their gap year program. Also, students who apply to their program by the Priority Deadline receive a $400 discount on tuition.

Everything You Need to Know About Gap Semester Programs

Education doesn’t need to be limited to enrolling in a traditional college course and being on campus every day. You can expand your worldview, gain priceless experiences, and add to your resume by joining a gap semester program. For most students, taking a gap semester is simply a matter of knowing what options are available and taking advantage of those opportunities.

You may be about to graduate high school or currently enrolled in college and looking for an opportunity to get a new perspective by learning outside the classroom. Whatever the case, a gap semester is an excellent opportunity to stretch yourself, learn new skills, and get clarity on your future! Here is everything you need to know about gap semester programs and how to prepare for them.

What is a Gap Semester Program?

gap semester travel programs

Gap semesters are international experiences that students can take as a break from their classroom studies. These experiences are specifically designed to give students a new perspective by exposing them to different parts of the world with unique cultures. Traveling abroad, going on a service or sustainability trip, learning a new language, or focusing on global business internships are all common reasons why students invest in gap semester programs (and we’ll dive into the details of this later).

As you may have already guessed, gap semesters are very similar to gap years, but instead of dedicating a full school year, you’re only taking a semester’s worth of time to travel and explore—usually about 6-15 weeks.

Why Take a Gap Semester?

gap semester travel programs

Getting out of the traditional classroom setting with gap semester programs is one of the best ways to create new opportunities and learn more about yourself and the skills you want to develop. Plus, with a large range of potential programs at your disposal, there is something for everyone. Some of the most direct benefits include the following points.

You don’t have to miss an entire year of school

Taking time off to travel, volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about, or make your resume competitive is never a waste of time. However, if you’re in a more intensive program or need to take a class that is only offered during certain semesters and can’t really afford to miss a year of school, you don’t have to! Gap semester programs pack a punch in the sense that you can get a lot of exciting and beneficial experiences out of just a couple of months and still stay on track in terms of classes and graduation.

Gap semesters tend to be less expensive than gap years, so you know that you’re getting the best bang for your buck by getting a vast experience without emptying your bank account. You also don’t need a gap year just to qualify for aid. For example, with Global Citizen Year you can get financial aid for their gap semester program to help cover the costs.

You get all of the benefits of a gap year

A year can feel like a big chunk of your life, and you should consider your time valuable. However, if you can get the same unique and rewarding experiences of a gap year in half of the time, you can really optimize your schedule. Not only does this save you money as we discussed, but it also:

  • Builds independence. Branching out on your own can feel risky and intimidating, but similar to taking a gap year, a gap semester can kick-start your life of adulthood and greater responsibilities while still offering some guidance through a program.
  • Learn new skills. Especially if you want to be more competitive for college applications, internships, job resumes, or other opportunities, a gap semester looks great on your list of accomplishments, and you can often develop a specific and marketable skill while you’re abroad. Whether you’re part of a humanitarian organization or an internship program, you can gain new skills like learning a new language, working on a team, and developing other business-related experiences that will help you with your occupation in the future.
  • Experience a new culture. One of the most enriching elements of a gap semester is that you can still immerse yourself in an entirely different culture without spending a year there. A gap year gives you plenty of time to get to know the people, the sites, the landscapes, and the experiences of a new country, and you don’t have to uproot your life for a whole year to get those experiences if you don’t want to.

Flexibility

Gap semesters are also exciting because there’s a lot of flexibility and opportunity. Let’s say you’re trying to pick between a social justice internship in Kenya and an exploratory travel abroad trip in India. You don’t really have to choose between them if they’re both only one semester, so just do both! With the right funding and planning, you have a lot more options to pick from and you don’t have to necessarily limit yourself to one “big” experience.

Gap Semester Ideas

gap semester travel programs

  • Volunteer to advance a cause you care about. You can make a direct impact on the people and places you care about, whether you want to help protect the earth through conservation programs or work with underserved communities. Global Citizen Year’s Take Action Lab focuses on human rights, so if you’re passionate about social justice and the rights of others, this program is for you!
  • Internships to build skills for a potential career. Your formal education is one of the biggest ways you qualify for a job after college, but most companies are looking for experience, too. An internship offers that experience while still understanding that you’re a student, so take the opportunity to get new skills and experiences now when you can afford to travel abroad as a student.
  • Learn a new language. Knowing a second or third language is an invaluable skill to have, both for your social life and for your academic and professional careers, too! It makes you far more prepared to thrive in today’s world of mass communication and the global economy, and it makes you stand out against the competition.

Where To Go for Your Gap Semester?

gap semester travel programs

No two gap semester programs are exactly the same and depending on your availability, comfort levels, and goals, you can find a program that works best for you, your resources, and your personality. Your primary options look like this:

Domestic. Staying in your home country for the gap semester is an option—there are plenty of cultures and service opportunities right at home.

International. Travel abroad and try something totally different! Experience a new culture and gain a global perspective.

Virtual. For ultimate flexibility, do a gap semester program virtually. You can further your education and collaborate with people your age on current issues from the comfort of your dorm room.

How to Prepare for a Gap Semester

gap semester travel programs

So, once you know you’re interested, how do you prepare for that semester of travel or service? Here is what we suggest.

  • Reflect on your goals. What do you want to learn from the experience? How do you want this experience to help you grow? What are you most passionate about, and how could learning from experts and other cultures help you make a difference about that passion?
  • Save your money. Look into financial aid options for gap semester programs and then save your money. You’ll want funds to try new things while you’re out of your home country, too!
  • Research the location you’re traveling to. Make sure you’re comfortable with being away from home and traveling to a new place. You need to be prepared for different weather conditions, cultural expectations, and other location-based practices.
  • Connect with mentors or peers that have taken gap semesters. Reach out to people who have participated in a gap semester, especially if you can find someone who has gone to the place you’re interested in going to. How was their experience? How did they prepare? Do they have any advice for you?

Top Gap Semester Programs

Taking a gap year can be a big commitment. The time and money alone can be enough to deter people from taking part in many programs. This is not to mention the thought of traveling to another country on your own.. If any of those things are concerns you’ve had, then you’ve come to the right place. Today we’re going to talk about gap semesters, which are all the best parts of gap years wrapped into one semester instead of two! So, let’s go!

What is a gap semester?

If you are familiar with a gap year, then you’re already familiar with gap semesters. The only difference between these two types of programs is the length of them. During a gap semester, you can travel, work, take online classes, or fill your time with anything that you think is beneficial to you.

Why choose a gap semester?

There are many reasons for students to take a gap semester, a few of which we listed below. It’s possible that you may have more than one reason for wanting to take a gap semester. Take a look at the reasons below and be sure to think about your own reasons for taking a gap semester as well!

  • Don’t have to take a full year off from school
  • May still be able to graduate college on time
  • Less expensive than a full gap year
  • Less time away from home

Gap semester programs

Okay, let’s get into some actual examples of programs now! All of the programs listed below are organized gap semesters you can take with an organization. We will talk about gap semesters you can do on your own in a bit!

EF Gap Year

Through EF Gap semester programs, students are encouraged to branch out and learn things that the traditional classroom can’t teach them. Through EF, students can pick from a range of programs that last around ten weeks. Each program has a detailed itinerary available on their website that shows exactly where you will travel, how many days you will stay in each place, and what you’ll be doing while you’re there. We’ve listed just a few of their programs below.

  • Business and Entrepreneurship in Stockholm
  • Language and Culture in Spain
  • The Pathfinder

Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad is a great option for students who are looking to spend their time giving back and being immersed in another culture. When you travel with Projects Abroad, they offer something that other organizations don’t often offer: flexibility. Each trip with Projects Abroad will have a minimum time that you must commit to (usually one to two weeks). However, after you have completed the minimum required time, you are free to choose how much longer you would like to stay.

Each week will incur an additional charge, but it is significantly less than the initial amount for the cost of the program. The best part too is that students can choose to add on these additional weeks while they are on the trip. That means that you don’t have to know ahead of time how long you would like to stay. Check out their programs to see if any are right for you!

Semester at Sea

Semester at Sea is a bit different from other traditional gap year or gap semester programs because you’ll still technically be competing college courses. In order to enroll in Semester at Sea, students must have taken at least 12 credits at the post secondary level. This means your gap semester may actually be more likely to take place in the spring unless you have completed college credit in high school. You must also be enrolled full time in a degree program at an accredited school. This means that you will need to complete the college admissions process as usual. The best part about completing a Semester at Sea semester is that you will be earning college credit, which means you shouldn’t fall behind any of your peers!

International Volunteer HQ

Taking time to travel and volunteer is a great way to spend your time away from school. By partaking in an International Volunteer HQ’s program , you’ll be able to give back and show any colleges you’ve applied to that you spent your time off doing something meaningful and productive. These programs allow you to volunteer during the day, as well as allow you time to explore the area you will be volunteering in.

ARCC Programs

If you’re looking for a program that packs a lot into a little trip, then ARCC Programs may be the perfect match for you! These programs run about 70 days in length and provide you with travel plans to several places. ARCC Programs are available to participate within the U.S. or outside the country. You can download a detailed itinerary of each trip from their website.

Self-planned gap semesters

It’s important to know that taking time off from school doesn’t mean that you have to have plans for all of that time. The time you take off should be purposeful, but that does not mean it has to be planned out to the very minute. Let’s talk about some other reasons you may take a gap semester!

Mental health

Graduating high school and going to college is a big transition, especially if you plan to move somewhere far away for school and have to leave everything you’ve ever known. There is nothing wrong with deciding to take a bit more time to make that transition.

Travel is an obvious part of all the programs we talked about above, but that kind of travel can be quite different from traveling you may do on your own. If you’d like to take some time traveling on your own, with a friend or with your family, that can also be a great way to spend your gap semester.

Taking some time to work is also a completely valid way to spend your time. Especially if while you’re working, you’re also spending your free time doing something like learning a language or volunteering. Just remember that the money you make can impact your financial aid as it will be considered income.

How much do gap semesters cost?

A gap semester can range in price depending on what you’re doing and how you are doing it. So, let’s look at some examples! Say that you want to teach English–depending on how you do it, whether through a program or on your own, you will incur different costs. Let’s look at three examples of what it might cost to teach English during a gap semester through organizations or on your own!

If you truly want to take part in a gap semester, there is a way to accommodate your budget, so check all your options thoroughly before you make any decisions!

How to pay for a gap semester?

One of the most attractive parts of a gap semester may be that the cost of the programs you participate in will be significantly less money than if you had to pay for a full year. Or if you plan to simply travel on your own, you’ll be able to mitigate the cost by spending less time traveling. In some cases, you may find that you have enough money to fund your gap semester on your own, but in case you don’t, we’ve listed a few options below!

Scholarships aren’t just for students who are attending traditional colleges. Take some time exploring scholarships that may be available through private organizations, as well as scholarships that some programs may offer if you choose to participate in a structured gap year program.

Payment plans

Payment plans are not a guaranteed option, but again, may be available should you choose to participate in a structured gap semester program. If you choose to travel somewhere with an organization, they will usually allow you to make payments instead of requiring the full tuition at once.

Out of pocket / working

It is possible to pay for a gap semester program on your own, especially if you plan to have a job while you take your gap semester. Keep in mind though that working and having an income might lessen your financial aid funds.

Deferring enrollment

Let’s talk for a minute about the college application process. Whether you plan to take a gap semester during fall or spring, you should be familiar with the policies of the school you are applying to. In most cases you should be able to complete the college admissions process as usual and defer your enrollment from fall to spring.

Key Takeaways

  • A gap semester is very similar to that of a gap year, but it is simply completed in one semester rather than two
  • There are plenty of ways that you can spend your gap semester through structured programs, or on your own through self-teaching, travel, or working
  • If you plan to attend college after your semester off, you should be sure to complete the college admissions process as usual and write a letter of deferment once you are accepted
  • It’s important to make sure that your semester off has meaning and purpose

University of Lynchburg

Lynchburg expands graduate offerings with 3 new programs

The University of Lynchburg is expanding its graduate offerings with three new education graduate programs. Starting in fall 2024, students can enroll in the Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology , the Gifted Education Certificate , or the Pre-K-12 Administration and Supervision Certificate .

“We’re thrilled to launch these new programs within the College of Education, Leadership, and Counseling,” said Dr. Steve Smith, interim dean of the college.

“These programs take advantage of many pre-existing courses, while also providing new areas for educators to advance their skills in curriculum development and organizational leadership.”

The Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology addresses the urgent need for educators to adeptly merge technology with teaching practices. This 36-credit-hour, online program offers a general, K-12, or higher education track that allows students to tailor their learning to their career aspirations.

Dr. Holly Gould, the MEd in instructional design and technology program director, emphasized the changing landscape of learning and the need for development in teaching methodologies.

“The roles of instructional designers are becoming increasingly complex with the explosion of online learning and the continuous changes needed to keep school-age and adult learners engaged,” she said.

“Lynchburg’s IDT program is here to fill the gap and help create innovative instructional designers, because delivering instruction, whether online or in-person, requires us to continuously adapt. ”

The Gifted Education Certificate is a concise, 12-credit-hour, online program tailored for licensed teachers aiming to specialize in the education of gifted learners. Successful completion of this program qualifies teachers for Virginia’s add-on endorsement for gifted education, enriching their credentials and teaching capabilities.

“Lynchburg’s Gifted Education Certificate empowers educators to nurture the unique talents of gifted learners,” said Dr. Victoria Hobson, professor and advocate for the new certificate.

“By offering this new program, students will be able to earn their add-on endorsement and foster the development of gifted students.”

The Pre-K-12 Administration and Supervision Certificate is a 21-credit-hour, online program designed for educators who already hold a master’s degree but wish to obtain the Virginia add-on endorsement as a K-12 school administrator. This program emphasizes practical administrative skills and includes essential internship experiences, offering hands-on leadership practice in educational settings.

“We wanted to give educators who want to advance into leadership or administrative roles the opportunity to earn the add-on endorsement without needing to complete an additional degree,” Dr. Mac Duis, director of the pre-K-12 administration and supervision program, explained

“Now, with the certificate option, we can open this career path to more of the dedicated educators who fill Virginia schools.”

The application deadline for the fall semester is July 31, and neither the GMAT or the GRE are required for these programs.

For more information about the programs or the application process, explore the graduate programs’ webpages or contact the Office of Graduate Success at gradsuccess@lynchburg.edu or 434.544.8300 . Financial aid is available in different forms and more information can be found on the graduate financial aid website .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

gap semester travel programs

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

gap semester travel programs

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

gap semester travel programs

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

gap semester travel programs

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

gap semester travel programs

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

gap semester travel programs

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

gap semester travel programs

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
