Cruise underneath the surface of the water on your own personal MINI SUB, a futuristic underwater motor-scooter. Experience the majesty of the Caribbean like never before on Key West's only Mini Sub Underwater Adventure!

These self-contained underwater diving vehicles are equipped with a large two-foot transparent dome that keeps your head perfectly dry throughout your voyage around the underwater reefs. Invented in the 1990's by a Florida-based company (Bell Aqua), the SUBs were featured on the television series "Sea Quest." These sea-horse shaped SUBs offer a safe, convenient method of exploring the vibrant reefs and coral gardens off the shore of Key West.

The reefs are teeming with a diverse array of marine life, including sea turtles, manta rays, mollusks, and a colorful spectrum of tropical fish. Have no experience scuba diving? Never even snorkeled? No problem. Our SUBs are the perfect method to witness the fantastic panoramic views below the surface.

Our knowledgeable and professional instructors will teach you everything you need to know about operating these user-friendly vehicles. First-time novices and diving veterans alike will enjoy this rare expedition. The bubble is large enough for your head and even your hands. Wear your eyeglasses and adjust them as necessary. Under the dome, you simply breathe normally without the use of snorkel tubes or regulators that are used in scuba diving. Bring an underwater camera with you and snap photos by holding your camera up to the outside of the dome. Propelled by a small battery operated engine, you maintain full control over your personal SUB.

Full precautions are taken by our expert divers to assure a safe and enjoyable experience. Air stored in a SCUBA cylinder is kept continuously flowing into your dome with a regulator manufactured by ScubaPro, the world's leading manufacturer of underwater life support.

Join us on a unique adventure out to the world's 3rd largest barrier reef system, the Florida Barrier Reef! Our Mini Sub tour allows you to experience a natural underwater eco system with minimal effort. Simply have a seat on an underwater scooter and navigate your way throughout parts of the reef system. By design, you are able to breathe the steady flow of oxygen within the dome during your exploration beneath the sea, and there is no need to wear a snorkel or breathing apparatus. Powered by an efficient electric motor you will be propelled and can even steer the scooters as you find yourself mesmerized by the brilliantly colored coral formations that make homes to thousands of marine species. Commonly spotted along the barrier reef are Porkfish, Angelfish, Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Pufferfish, Gobies, Filefish, Grouper, Jewfish, Barracuda, Moray Eels, Green and Loggerhead Sea Turtles, and many more. Oh, and don't forget to bring an underwater camera with you and capture every up-close moment!

Gloria Estefan sponsors ship USS Miami during Fleet Week

MIAMI —  U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced the navy's next nuclear powered submarine will be named the U.S.S. Miami and is sponsored by Gloria Estefan.

The announcement was made during the official kickoff concert of the inaugural Fleet Week Miami.

South Florida icons Emilio and Gloria Estefan were part of the special event.

Headline performers included legendary reggae group "The Wailers."

Thousands of sailors, marines, and members of the Coast Guard will spend the  week in Miami , meeting with the public, soaking up the sun, and of course, doing a little bit of showing off.

 After docking a little further up the coastline in Fort Lauderdale for over three decades, South Florida's Fleet Week is in for Miami this year.

Last July , Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, and other officials announced at PortMiami that the maritime event will take place from May 7 to May 13.

"A week of showing the capabilities of the maritime forces," says Lance Corporal Alexander Peterson.

The inaugural Fleet Week Miami brings five ships to South Florida: The USS Bataan, USS Leyte Gulf, USS Normandy, Coast Guard cutter Seneca, and the USS Harry S. Truman, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, anchored offshore.

"I think it's lots of fun you know I think it's really going to be a really cool experience," says Peterson.

A fun week but also a meaningful one for these sailors.

Susan Backlinie, the stuntperson and actress who as a young skinny-dipper out for a nighttime swim off the coast of Amity Island became the shark’s first victim in Steven Spielberg ’s Jaws , has died. She was 77.

Backlinie died Saturday at her home in Ventura, California, her convention agent, Matthew Templeton, told The Daily Jaws website.

“I didn’t want an actor to do it. I wanted a stuntperson because I needed somebody who was great in the water, who knew water ballet and knew how to endure what I imagined was going to be a whole lot of violent shaking,” Spielberg said in Laurent Bouzereau’s 2023 book, Spielberg: The First Ten Years . “So, I went to stunts to find her, and Susan was up to the challenge.”

“The first thing [Spielberg] said to me was, ‘When your scene is done, I want everyone under the seats with the popcorn and bubblegum,’” Backlinie told The Palm Beach Post in a 2017 interview.

As the director described it in Bouzereau’s book: “She had a harness on. There were two eye rings in it and wires that led to two stakes on the beach [about 50 yards away]. Five crew were on one side and five crew on the other, and they basically pulled Susan. There was a ribbon hanging from the wire, and when it got to one of the stakes, they had to stop pulling and the other team took over and pulled the other way.

“What you didn’t want to have happen was for both teams to pull at the same time. For extra safety, she had the ability to quickly release the wire if something went wrong. It had to be perfectly choreographed to give the impression the shark was pulling her violently to the right and then immediately violently to the left.”

Backlinie worked on the scene for three days in Martha’s Vineyard. “We would film anywhere from 6 or 7 in the morning until 9, because of the light,” she said in an interview last year. “I’ll tell you, I was exhausted at the end of the day.”

Born on Sept. 1, 1946, Backlinie and her family moved from Washington to West Palm Beach, Florida, when she was 10. She was a cheerleader and state swimming champion at Forest Hill High School; after graduating in 1964, she attended nursing school for a year.

According to the Post , she swam as a mermaid at the Weeki Wachee Springs tourist attraction in Florida and worked with wild animals in Miami at Ivan Tors Studios, home of Flipper on NBC. On a national tour with Tors, she shared a stage with Gentle Ben, the bear who would star on the 1967-69 CBS series with Dennis Weaver and Clint Howard.

Backlinie was shooting on location with a tiger in Canada when the Jaws staff found her. She told Spielberg: “If you use me, you could get close-ups during the stunt itself. If you use an actress, she’ll have to hide her face.’”

In the 2010 TV documentary Jaws: The Inside Story , she said that during her scene, “as I would feel my hips go to one side, I would just throw my arms in the opposite direction as hard as I could.

“I also had a pair of fins on because when they would pull me to one side, I would go under, so I had to kick with all my strength to stay above the water. It took a lot of energy, but I was in pretty good shape back then.” Between takes, Spielberg was in an inner tube beside her.

Backlinie also appeared in Two-Minute Warning (1976), A Stranger in the Forest (1976), Day of the Animals (1977) — she was an animal trainer on that as well — The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and a 1982 episode of The Fall Guy before retiring from stunt work.

She and her husband, Harvey, lived on a houseboat in Ventura.
