Dionne Warwick is a singer hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, United States who was born on the 12th of December 1940. Thanks to her partnership with the songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David, she has become one of the most celebrated soul singers of all time.

Marie Dionne Warrick was quite literally born to a family of singers. Her mother, along with some of her aunts and uncles, performed in the Drinkard Singers, a gospel group who were already signed to RCA Records when Warwick was born. So with a child surrounded by that kind of music from an early age, it’s only logical that they’d follow in their family’s footsteps and by the time she was six, the young Dionne had sung her first gospel solo at her local church. After she proved herself as a genuine talent, she became a sort of reserve member of the Drinkard Singers, backing them up when she could and singing lead on a couple of songs on a few occasions.

By the late 1950’s, she had performed with the Drinkard Singers on local TV stations all over New York City and New Jersey. However, by 1958 she wanted to perform in her own group, which wasn’t at its heart a family side-show. So along with her sister Delia, Mryna Utley and Carol Slade, she formed the group The Gospelaires, who got off to a flying start as they won a talent contest at the Harlem Apollo with their very first performance together. The group made a number of records as a troupe of backing singers, cutting tracks with the likes of Ben E. King, Solomon Burke and The Drifters. It was while recording the track “Mexican Divorce” with the latter act, that Warwick caught the eye of the songs composer, a young Brill Building Songwriter called Burt Bacharach.

Initially Warwick sang on Bacharach’s demo tapes, but eventually, Florence Greenberg, the president of Sceptre Records, heard her sing on a song called “It’s Love That Really Counts”. According to legend, her reaction was to tell Bacharach “Forget the song, get the girl!”, and Warwick was signed to the label in no time at all. By November 1962, Warwick’s first single “Don’t Make Me Over” was released, and though her second name is actually spelt Warrick, it was mis-spelt as Warwick on the single’s label, and undeterred, she took the misspelt version as both her professional and personal name.

“Don’t Make Me Over” was a sizeable, hit, hitting number 21 on the pop charts (Bacharach and David’s first excursion into the top forty), and hitting the top five of the R&B charts with aplomb. Unlike most of her contemporaries, she weathered the British Invasion of America by English musicians, chiefly by becoming a star in Europe as well as America. In France she was personally introduced on stage by Marlene Dietrich herself, and in the U.K songs that she made famous were covered by the likes of Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield. At the time when Beatlemania was at its peak and there was little real interest in artists that didn’t sound like them, Warwick was still able to become one of the biggest names in pop music.

The rest of the 60’s were extremely kind to Warwick, filled as they were with gold and platinum selling albums and singles as deathless as “Do You Know The Way To San José?”, “I Say A Little Prayer”, “Anyone Who Had A Heart” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”. They were kind in a way that the seventies couldn’t possibly replicate, and after splitting from Bacharach and David, she seemed to flounder until 1979, when she moved to Arista Records and released “I’ll Never Love This Way Again”. That single was enough to completely revitalise her career for a couple of years, with her subsequent albums “Dionne” and “No Night So Long” going platinum and gold, respectively, and netting her a fistful of Grammy awards.

Ever since then, she’s been one of the most beloved figures in soul music. So beloved, that in the cut throat world of show-business, we’ve even allowed for a few missteps here and there. Like a strange period in the nineties, where she became more famous for being the face of a psychic phone line service than she was as a singer. However what’s passed has passed, and what other artist, past or present, can you see being nominated for a Grammy award over half a century after they debuted in pop music? The list is very, very few, but Warwick did just that with her album “Now”. She’s still got it after all these years, and for that reason, she comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

There are die-hard Motown fans in this audience tonight, ever prepared to witness the genius that is the “I Saw a Little Prayer” singer, Dionne Warwick. This evening is on the leg of her Live in Concert 2005 tour, where at sixty five she has still got this such an amazing talent and stage presence about her. One of the most heart-warming features of this performance is that she still absolutely loves singing these songs. The five times Grammy Award winning singer begins with the wonderful rendition of “Here I Am”, singing the song with just her and a piano, there is a fashion in which she sings it as though the rest of the band follow her lead as one by one, they all join in for her subsequent song, “The April Fools”, and then the pace quickens as she goes into “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”. It is what becomes more of a medley than a set, but it works so effectively as she seamlessly flows through each song, as though it was the way that they were all intended to be performed. When she sings, “Say a Little Prayer” the audience are very respectful, applauding at the start and the end of the song. One of the things that really elevate this song is that she sings it as a duet with singer, David Elliot, who has such a fantastic range, showing off the fantastic vocal acrobatics that he can execute with his voice. It is a special moment when Warwick brings him back on stage for her final song, “That’s What Friends Are For”, the close the set in beautiful harmony, washing over the audience, goose bumps all around.

With a career spanning five decades, it's unsurprising that Dionne Warwick is considered one of the music industry's most loved and most well respected stars.

With a talent that is hard to capture in words, her track record speaks for itself. She is the second most-charted female vocalist of all time, second only to Aretha Franklin, with a total of 56 singles making the Billboard top 100 between 1962 and 1998, making her so well deserving of a legendary status within the music world.

Her soft and soulful vocals lend themselves perfectly as a recording artist, contributing to her commercial success, however Dionne Warwick remains, to this day, a songstress who deserves to be appreciated in reality, as a live artist.

As a fan for as long as I can remember of her timeless songs, I was lucky enough to catch Dionne Warwick at London's Indigo2 back in June of this year, where she played for one night only. And what a treat it was. The members of the audience, young and old, were taking on a journey through the decades since the 1960s with hits such as "Walk on By", "Just Don't Know What to do with Myself" and "That's What Friends Are For".

For someone who's made such an incredible impact on the music industry for many years, Dionne Warwick has remained humble and grounded, and it is a joy to watch her live. If you have the chance to see this legend live and fully appreciate the gift she has blessed us with for so long, I suggest you should.

Dionne Warwick, the second most charted female vocalist of all time has a reputation that proceeds her and a career that has spanned five decades. Now approaching her 75th birthday, although Warwick does not tour as regularly due to family commitments and schedule yet whenever she does step onto stage to huge cheers from her fans, it is as if she has never been away.

Dionne is a complete natural with the audience and her accompanying musicians, she looks so at ease onstage you forget that she is very much in her pensioner years. She has a huge successful of soulful R & B/pop tracks including 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' and 'Walk On By' which sound as warm and wonderful as ever. Warwick's vocal is still very strong and her stage presence and demeanour appears to be only be improving and it is clear that she is incredibly impassioned about her music and the opportunity to perform the much loved works to her crowds. A fantastic encore of 'All the Love in the World' completes an iconic, world class performance.

Had a wonderful time watching Dionne Warwick on Saturday 19th November 2016 at Jupiter's, what a fantastic time we had. Her band were the best especially the piano man. Just sad she didn't do an oncall since it was her last concert. But all in all we still enjoyed her concert.

Dionne was great . She hit all the notes just that her voice may be 10 % less strong. I enjoyed it so much that I am willing to travel to see a full concert. She was a guest last night so she only sang a few songs. 5 stars thanks for informing me!

We were really looking forward to the show, having travelled from New Zealand.

But I must say we were really disappointed. 1.15 hours and no encore.. even just for one song, would have made all the difference.

Dionne Warwick Comes to Soka Performing Arts Center in September

The performance is on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at 5 p.m.

Dionne Warwick will perform one concert only at Soka Performing Arts Center on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at 5 p.m. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, April 17 at 12 noon.

Warwick’s spectacular and multi-faceted career is impossible to capture in a few descriptions and superlatives, but her singular gifts and lasting influence on popular music over the last six decades is unmatchable. Consider this amazingly diverse string of hits: “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Walk on By,” “That’s What Friends Are For,” “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Alfie,” “Heartbreaker,” “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” “Déjà Vu,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.”

Born into a musical family in East Orange, New Jersey, Warwick began singing professionally in 1961 when she was discovered by Burt Bacharach and Hal David during their formative years. She recorded her first hit, “Don’t Make Me Over,” in 1962. Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including many of her most celebrated Bacharach/David recordings.

Unlike many Aquarian Age superstars, Warwick had staying power. She enjoyed a major career renaissance after the release of "I'll Never Love This Way Again" in 1979. The following year, Warwick won two GRAMMY® Awards: Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for "Déjà Vu.”

She reunited with Bacharach and David when she recorded “That’s What Friends are For” in 1985 as a benefit single for the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Gladys Knight , Elton John and Stevie Wonder joined her on the recording. It raised more than $3 million for the cause. Warwick also performed in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World.”

Since 1990 Warwick has widened her explorations and humanitarian activities and secured her place in the pop-culture firmament. She recorded an album of Cole Porter ’s music, headlined a World Hunger Day concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, performed benefit concerts for the LGBTQ community, and participated in shows like “Celebrity Apprentice” and “The Masked Singer.” In 2012, Warwick was inducted into the GRAMMY® Museum in Los Angeles. Her Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® was awarded in 2019. In 2021, she was nominated for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time. She is a 2023 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Soka Performing Arts Center is located at 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. Ticket prices start at $55 and will be available at the Soka box office at 949-480-4278 and online at performingarts.soka.edu . Box Office walk-up hours are 12-4 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and one hour prior to show times on show days.

Live Review: Dionne Warwick at Bridgewater Hall

By Jay Darcy

Article Summary

Live Review: Dionne Warwick at Bridgewater Hall

She’s Back: One Last Time.

It’s one thing seeing the legend that is Dionne Warwick … it’s another thing seeing her on her farewell tour. I get to tell my grandkids I saw Dionne Warwick. Not that they’ll have any idea who she is. Not that I plan to have kids – let alone grandkids. But you get the sentiment.

Warwick is a trailblazer, a groundbreaker, and one of the biggest-selling artists of all time. Whilst she’s not had the same longevity as pop culture icons like Cher , Diana Ross and Dolly Parton , she’s just not that kind of artist – but still, her icon status is undisputed.

“June 2022” has gotten me through the past year. In the space of just over a fortnight, I’m seeing Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Diana Ross – a holy trinity of Black female excellence. Even better – I got a last-minute invitation to see Queen + Adam Lambert days before Warwick. I’m in my legends phase, okay?

Warwick’s opening act was the wonderful Rachel John – the Olivier-nominated actress who originated the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton in the West End. Her other notable roles include Nicki Marron in the West End revival of The Bodyguard (where she sometimes played the lead, Rachel) and Mrs. Neilsen in the Toronto production and West End remount of Girl from the North Country . The former is based on the film of the same name and adds a few famous Whitney Houston songs to the mix, whilst the latter is the second musical to use the music of Bob Dylan (after The Times They are a-Changin’ ) – and it’s coming to Manchester later this year!

John treated us to a Dylan cover, an Emeli Sandé cover (‘My Kind of Love’), and a few gospel covers from her new album. I was not expecting John to sing a song from Hamilton – not the right crowd – but it could have been wise to show off her vocal range by covering a Whitney Houston song from The Bodyguard . However, John seemed to be going for more of a warm, welcoming vibe than a show-stopping, steal-the-spotlight opening set before the timeless Dionne Warwick took to the stage.

Indeed, what made John’s set so special was how utterly effortless it was! She sang her heart out, without any over-the-top riffs or howls. Her vocal control is exceptional. It’s no surprise to learn that her background is in musical theatre, but her voice is accessible and commercial; I hope she “makes it” as a mainstream artist, now that she seems to be stepping away from musical theatre.

After a short interval, Dionne Warwick took the stage. The audience showed the icon so much love as she slowly walked onstage, delicate and feeble, but without any assistance. She’s a trooper. She was showing us that she can do this on her own.

She opened her set with ‘Walk On By’ – a soul-soothing song that took older audience members back in time (and me, the youngest person in the audience, to a tie I never knew).

Warwick’s voice is, of course, not what it was – the legend is 81 years old – but it still sounds beautiful. There were little glimmers where we could hear the old Dionne (that is, the young Dionne). It was bittersweet: the woman is getting old and is losing her instrument, yet she’s still going, and she’s still kind-of got it. It was quite admirable seeing her give it her all at her old age – this is her passion, her love, her joy, and she’s not going to give it up (even though her days of touring are coming to an end).

She treated us to her biggest hits, such as ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’ and ‘I’ll Never Love This Way Again’. The audience were delighted when she began ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ (she recorded the song originally, but Aretha Franklin’s cover the following year was a bigger hit). She sang this song as a duet with her drummer – who she later revealed was her eldest son!

Before singing ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose?’, she told us that she later recorded the song as a duet with the late, great Celia Cruz – and she sang this (extra Latin) musical arrangement. Ironically, Warwick is not fond of this “dumb” song or fan favourite ‘Heartbreaker’ – she said she “cried all the way to the bank”.

The audience joyfully sang along to ‘Heartbreaker’. It’s my aunty’s favourite Warwick song, and in the last few days before the concert, it somehow became mine (though just before the concert, I realised how much I loved ‘No Night So Long’, which sadly she did not sing).

The last part of the concert was about healing the world. She began the section with the little known ‘If I Want To’, before covering ‘We Are the World’ by supergroup USA for Africa (which she was a part of) – the USA’s answer to the UK’s Band Aid (‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’). This was followed by her cover of ‘What the World Needs Now is Love’ – written by Bacharch and David, who wrote many of her hits, she rejected it, only to cover it after it became a hit.

She unsurprisingly ended the concert with her signature hit,’That’s What Friends Are For’ – a cover of the Rod Stewart song by herself, Elton John , Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder (billed as Dionne & Friends ).

She then headed offstage, before taking a moment to wave goodbye to the audience. There was so much love and gratitude. She might not be selling out arenas like the aforementioned Cher, Parton and Ross, but she’s still going strong all these years later, selling out big music venues all around the world – and the love that her fans have for her, oh, is it strong.

One of her biggest fans is a lovely lady called Janey. She gifted Warwick a beautiful bouquet. This reminded me of a tweet I saw earlier that day – a woman had gifted Warwick a bouquet but neglected to tell her that it sat in water; Warwick placed it on the piano and accidentally turned it into a water feature!

Warwick then recounted this story. What I did not realise, though, was that it was the same woman! I only found out when I tweeted the woman to tell her that Warwick recounted the story. Safe to say, Warwick will never forget her – the water feature is pretty unforgettable!

The only issue with the concert was the sound; Warwick’s mic could have done with being turned up a notch because the music occasionally overpowered her. Everything else was perfect.

It was wonderful seeing the legendary Dionne Warwick for the first time – and the last .

She tours the UK until 10th June.

Guitar legend and Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts has died at age 80. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer wrote the band's biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man.” Manager David Spero told The Associated Press that Betts died early Thursday at his home in Osprey, Florida. He says Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre: Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans’ music, which combined blues, country, R&B and jazz with ’60s rock.

Legendary US singer Dionne Warwick has announced she will perform at eight special shows in the UK.

The news came shortly after the 82-year-old star became one of the latest recipients of a Kennedy Center Honor , alongside comedian Billy Crystal and actor Queen Latifah.

The Don't Make Me Over tour will begin its UK leg at Gateshead's The Glasshouse on Sunday 5 May, 2024, with tickets going on sale on Friday 8 December at 10am via Ticketmaster.

The “Walk on By” singer will then travel across the UK visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, Salford, Bristol, and Southend before concluding at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on Tuesday 14 May.

Warwick said in a statement: “I’m so thrilled to be coming back to the UK and bringing a brand-new show to my fans. I’ll be sharing stories & personal anecdotes from my life along with footage from my recent documentary, Don’t Make Me Over . And of course, I’ll be singing some of my favourite songs from my career.”

The evening will feature hits from across Warwick’s decades-long career, including a selection of classic Warwick/Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs such as “I Say A Little Prayer”, “Do You Know The Way To San Jose” and “Walk On By.”

She will be joined on stage by interviewer Dave Wooley, her band plus a multimedia set up with an LED screen showing highlights from her recently released documentary, Don’t Make Me Over.

You can find her UK tour dates below:

Sun 5 May – Gateshead – The Glasshouse

Tue 7 May – Edinburgh – Usher Hall

Thu 9 May – Glasgow – Royal Concert Hall

Sat 11 May – Birmingham – Symphony Hall

Sun 12 May – Salford – The Lowry

Thu 16 May – Bristol – Beacon

Sun 19 May – Southend – Cliffs Pavilion

In Don’t Make Me Over, Snoop Dogg recalled meeting Warwick for the first time , saying: “We were kind of, like, scared and shook up.”

The rapper revealed that Warwick was not impressed with the misogynistic slurs in his songs and had arranged a meeting with him, Tupac and Death Row Records founder Suge Knight to give them a dressing down.

Warwick said she told the group of rappers: “You guys are all going to grow up. You’re going have families. You’re going to have children. You’re going to have little girls, and one day that little girl is going to look at you and say, ‘Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?’ What are you going to say?’

Snoop Dogg appreciated the singer’s advice, explaining: “She was checking me at a time when I thought we couldn’t be checked.”

“We were the most gangsta as you could be, but that day at Dionne Warwick’s house, I believe we got out-gangstered that day.”

Dionne Warwick

dionne warwick concert tour

FINAL CURTAIN CALL This show is no longer running.

Legendary six-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist Dionne Warwick  will be coming to The London Palladium , as part of her Farewell Tour .

Warwick says, “After almost six decades I’ve decided it’s time to put away from touring trunk and focus on recording, one off concerts and special events. I still love performing live, but the rigours of travelling every day so far from home, sleeping in a different hotels each night, one concert after the other, is becoming hard. So, I’ve decided to stop touring on that level in Europe…. but I’m not retiring!!”

The show will encompass Warwick’s monumental career, with songs from her hugely successful recording catalogue including a selection of classic Warwick/ Burt Bacharach/ Hal David songs such as I Say A Little Prayer , Do You Know The Way To San Jose , Anyone Who Had A Heart  and Walk On By .

Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era (1955-1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. She is one of the most-charted female vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the  Billboard  Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998, and 80 singles making all  Billboard  charts combined.

Montreux Jazz Festival 2024: Janelle Monáe, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Duran Duran and Smashing Pumpkins Set for Fest's 58th Edition

T he Montreux Jazz Festival 2024 line-up has been confirmed, and this year's lineup features an eclectic mix of pop, alt-rock, classic rock, electronic music and, of course, jazz!

Across 16 days and two stages, the legendary musical celebration mixes favorites, rising stars and debutantes, including Raye , Sting, Janelle Monáe, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack , PJ Harvey, Diana Krall, Lenny Kravitz, André 3000 , the National, Air, Smashing Pumpkins , Duran Duran and Dionne Warwick.

This year's event from July 5–20 will introduce a new layout in the town, due to construction work on the Convention Centre which typically hosts the festival's main stages. According to the organizers, "attendees will enjoy the Lake Stage, a main stage constructed in a breathtaking setting on the surface of Lake Geneva with the backdrop of the Alps."

Montreux organizers also noted: "The festival also returns to the Casino, which is steeped in history, having burned down in the '70s and inspired Deep Purple’s 'Smoke on the Water.' The festival couldn’t miss the chance to invite the group back for their tenth performance at Montreux."

Collaborations and celebrations will be on display, as 10-time Grammy nominee Janelle Monáewill feature on the same night as Raye, who achieved a record-breaking win at the BRITs, taking home six awards . Electronic music devotees will see English trip-hop collective Massive Attack back after a five-year absence from the stage, while French duo Air will perform their album Moon Safari in its entirety to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Never miss a story — sign up for the Q newsletter for the latest music news on all your favorite artists, all in one place.

With a capacity of 1,300, the Casino offers a mix of jazz, afrobeats, pop, rap and special projects. On July 13, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets will focus on the band's founding years, from 1967 to 1972, including the Syd Barrett period and cult hits such as "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes." Grammy Hall of Famer and legendary singer Dionne Warwick will also grace the Casino stage, offering up hits from her six-decade career and sharing the night with Americana/country folk duo the War and Treaty. André 3000 will be appearing as an instrumentalist, performing material from his recently released flute album New Blue Sun.

As highlighted in the press release, the Montreux Jazz Festival has "a longstanding history of hosting the brightest talents before they explode into global icons. This year, it will host several bright and brilliant musicians in Victor Ray, Thee Sacred Souls, Jalen Ngonda, Henry Moodie and Lauren Spencer Smith."

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Duran Duran will be making their Montreux Jazz Festival debut on the final night July 20, along with Soft Cell's Marc Almond and David Ball.

Each day of the Festival will feature a new concept of 'Pop-up Concerts' and the new layout will showcase the festival's free offering along an extended route on the lakeside quays, with eleven stages of entertainment. The full program for those events will be announced in full on June 5.

Tickets are on sale from April 19 at 11am BST: www.montreuxjazzfestival.com/en/programme .

Duran Duran will make their Montreux debut this summer.Nefer Suvio
