Wisecracking Jungle Animals on an Ecological Crusade

delhi safari cartoon film

By Neil Genzlinger

  • Dec. 6, 2012

The worst thing about the animated film “Delhi Safari” isn’t that it’s awful. It’s that it shamelessly rips off much better animated movies. What kind of lesson is that for our young people?

The film, made in India but overdubbed in English for the American release, follows a group of animals whose forest home is being threatened by callous developers. The beasts decide to hike to New Delhi to try to get their grievances heard.

That they spend most of this journey engaging in dreary infighting and occasionally singing equally dreary songs would make the film unappetizing even if it didn’t so brazenly borrow from “The Lion King,” “The Jungle Book” and others.

An adorable lion cub — oh, sorry; it’s a leopard — who communes with his dead father (who lost his life saving the cub) is at the center of the story. Sound familiar? So will the laid-back, wisdom-spouting bear, the malicious hyenas and the humans-are-evil plot. This film is supposed to represent a step forward for Indian animation. The trouble is, there’s not an original idea in it.

“Delhi Safari” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). It has menacing moments.

Opens on Friday nationwide. Directed by Nikhil Advani 1 hour 36 minutes

Review by Travis Lytle ★★★

Gruff, derivative, and occasionally unpleasant, Nikhil Advani's "Delhi Safari" rides one catchy song and one plucky parrot to become an engaging, mildly enjoyable animated adventure. The animal-centric musical boasts questionable designs and cantankerous characters but is moderately charming enough to rise to the level of worthy, family-friendly oddity.

Lifting wholesale plot points from both "The Lion King" and "Madagascar," India's "Delhi Safari" revolves around a group of animals driven to protect their homes and, if needed, take on humankind. Journeying to the city led by a feline apparition, the beasts teach humans the importance of sharing the world. The themes are direct, and the story, when not plagiarizing story beats, has compelling moments.

As a production, the film has low…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Alright, this is one of those movies I'm gonna have to figure out my rating for as I'm writing the review, so just bare with me here. I saw this movie eons ago when I was much younger and completely forgot about it until it just randomly popped in my memory again. I decided to check it out again today and oh, boy, does it NOT stand the test of time. I mean, I had forgotten most of the movie except for a character's death in the opening scene and a moment of revelation between all of the characters, but I put faith in the idea that maybe this movie wasn't THAT bad. Yeah, it's really not that great. Delhi…

A very bad children's flick where a parrot attempts to film pornography (???) and a monkey keeps about thirty guns inside his skin. Yes, really. Delhi Safari is a 'film' that was made. The animation is atrocious the characters are banal and the plot almost exists. Watching this film is like watching paint dry except the paint is a monkey that is trying to shoot you. Do. Not. Watch. Delhi. Safari. Please.

TheContrarian

Review by TheContrarian ½

So um... The monkey is trying to kill the parrot, right? Like, he's been hiding bombs and machine guns in his skin for this purpose. (They shake it out of his skin pockets, so we know what he was hiding.) And um, the parrot and monkey become friends after they... get drunk on coconut milk. That is highly unrealistic, everyone watching wanted to kill that stupid parrot, the monkey was my favorite character because he wanted to kill that parrot. But NO! This movie had to show kids that EVERYONE becomes friends after getting drunk. They had to throw in morals or whatever. 0/10 because the monkey forgot to follow through.

I honestly thought this film was pretty boring when I first saw this sometime in the summer of 2013.

But wait a minute... at least two talented actors like Tara Strong and Christopher Lloyd are at least in it as English voice actors, but still doesn't save the film from being bad.

Delhi Safari is a 2012 computer animated film directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Krayon Pictures. Although the film's origin is India, the film was dubbed in English shortly after its release date and appeared in American theaters in early December of the same year.

Somewhere in the jungles of India, a leopard cub named Yuvi is busy bonding with his father when construction vehicles and workers roam into the area for deforestation. Although Yuvi manages to get away, the cub's father is killed, and he (as well as the other animals) come to the conclusion that they need to relocate before the humans kill anyone else. After much arguing, and realizing that the humans can easily kill them all if they go to war, the animals decide to talk to the humans in order to make them change their minds about destroying their home. With the help of an English-speaking parrot named Alex, Yuvi, his mother, and a ragtag group of other animals venture across India towards Delhi, in hopes that they can convince the humans to reconsider the deforestation.

While the film isn't very popular in America , Delhi Safari has much critical acclaim in India. The film won the National Film Award for Best Animated Film in 2012, as well as the award for Best Feature Film at FICCI FRAMES 2012.

  • Bagga the bear wears a safari hat.
  • Bajrangi wears a red bandana on his forehead and has a stud earring on his right ear.
  • An owl can be scene in the jungle wearing eyeglasses.
  • Pigeon wears a mailman hat.
  • Raju the bat wears sunglasses.
  • The bees wear tiny pilot helmets.
  • Some of the flamingos wear turbans.
  • Ass Shove : At one point, Bajrangi tries to wake up an old turtle by shoving his head into his shell. Unfortunately for him, the turtle’s head comes out at the opposite end.
  • Beary Friendly : Bagga the bear qualifies. He acts as a guru for Bajrangi and believes that humans can be appealed to peacefully.
  • Blood Knight : Bajrangi really wants to go to war with humans.
  • Bloodless Carnage : Even though Sultan is shown getting shot by a human, there is absolutely no blood present when he falls and dies.
  • Character Development : All five main characters manage to grow throughout the trip to Delhi in various different ways.
  • Deadpan Snarker : Alex. He can barely go a few sentences without speaking sarcastically to Bajrangi.
  • Death by Origin Story : Sultan. His death is largely what causes Yuvi and the other animals to seek help against the deforestation.
  • Decoy Protagonist : There's a reason why Sultan isn't even on the cover poster for this movie...
  • A Dog Named "Dog" : Pigeon is a pigeon.
  • The hot-headed Bajrangi is first seen calling all the other animals cowards for wanting to leave their home after the humans kill Sultan, while he wants to resort to violence, as opposed to talking to them peacefully.
  • Alex is first seen lip-syncing to a song on television while he dances around in an oversized, comfortable house to let the viewers know just how pampered humans have made him.
  • Fat and Skinny : Marela and Bharela are Bajrangi’s lackeys. One is pudgy, the other is as skinny as a nail.
  • Groin Attack : When Bajrangi visualizes what will happen if Bagga hears him kill Alex, he imagines a scenario where Bagga grabs him by the throat and uses his other paw to crush his nether regions.
  • Hammerspace : Somehow, Bajrangi is capable of carrying well over two dozen weapons with him, despite being naked.
  • Heinous Hyena : Kaalia and his pack act as minor antagonists on the journey to Delhi.
  • Informed Species : Bagga is supposedly a sloth bear, but looks absolutely nothing like one, more like a brown bear.
  • Irony : Although Bajrangi hates humans with a passion, he actually uses a lot of human weapons such as guns and knives. This may be his attempt at fighting fire with fire though.
  • Jerkass : Bajrangi and Alex. They both get better .
  • Mama Bear : Go on. Try to mess with Yuvi without Beggum tearing you to shreds afterwards.
  • Misplaced Wildlife : A pack of spotted hyenas appear in the movie, even though they are only native to Africa, not India.
  • Mood Whiplash : After Alex and Bajrangi spend some time bonding and drinking too much coconut milk , Bajrangi walks off to get some water and is terrified to see a bunch of tiger skeletons in the area with a very disturbed tiger sitting across from him.
  • Nobody Poops : Averted when Bajrangi takes a pee break after the protagonists take a brief rest at night on their way to Delhi.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm : Bajrangi accidentally breaks a hornet's nest with a large rock near the end of the film. Cue hundreds of hornets chasing after the protagonists...
  • Shout-Out : Pigeon mentions that Alex can speak various languages, including Klingon .
  • Tell Him I'm Not Speaking to Him : After the group learns Bajrangi intentionally try to have Alex get eaten by hyenas despite how important he is to their mission, Beggum tells Bagga to tell Bajrangi that he is no longer a part of their group.
  • Those Two Guys : Bharela and Marela, the two primates who are never seen away from each other.
  • Bajrangi. He started out as a hot-headed Jerkass who only listened to himself, but he finally understood that violence would solve nothing and that he needed to become nicer.
  • Alex. Started off as a pompous, sarcastic bird who preferred his pampered life. Eventually realized that he needed to help the other animals and convince the humans that what they were doing was hurting the environment.
  • Violence Really Is the Answer : Discussed shortly after Sultan dies, where Bajrangi seriously considers going to war with the humans. Ultimately subverted in the end, where the protagonists solve the crisis by merely talking to the humans, because they know that violence will only lead to an endless circle of more violence .
  • Wasn't That Fun? : After jumping into the water to avoid the bees during the mine cart chase, Bagga jokingly suggests going on the cart ride again. Begum doesn’t think what he said was funny.

Delhi Safari is a heartwarming and adventurous animated movie that came out in 2012. The movie revolves around different animals that embark on a journey together to protest against the destruction of their forest home in India. The film starts with a group of animals gathered in their forest home, discussing the sudden appearance of humans and their aggressive attempts to cut down the trees. The animals fear losing their homes and their lives due to the encroachment of humans.

However, there is a ray of hope for the animals as a wise, old parrot named Alex (voiced by Govinda) tells them about a story of hope. Alex shares a tale of a group of animals who set on a journey from Mumbai to Delhi to speak to the Prime Minister of India about their plight, and the humans ended up changing their mind about destruction.

Inspired by the story, the animals decide to embark on a journey to Delhi to plead their case to the government. The group of animals includes a cub leopard named Yuvi, a wise old Baxter monkey, a dear squirrel called squeaker, and a colorful tropical bird named Bajrangi.

Once they start their journey, the obstacles start to pile up. They come across a pack of wild dogs led by a ferocious Alpha dog named Sultan. Sultan despises the idea of animals and humans living together and terrorizes the group on several occasions.

After a few escapades, the animals come across a street-smart pigeon named Charlie (voiced by Akshaye Khanna), who agrees to become their guide to Delhi. It's revealed that he is motivated by his own selfishness as he wants to be famous and recognized as a hero after helping save the animals.

The group of animals faces numerous challenges during their journey to Delhi. They encounter human settlements, fast-moving trains, a storm, and even an attack by a poacher. Charlie proves his worth by helping the animals escape and showing great bravery in the face of danger.

Urmila Matondkar provides her voice for Begum, a female black buck the group encounters on their way. Begum is a victim of human greed and had been captive in a zoo, longing to be reunited with her family.

As the animals journey nears its end and they get closer to Delhi, the challenges become tougher. But in the end, they finally reach their destination and are met with a huge gathering of spectators and media.

Delhi Safari is a beautifully crafted tale with a strong message about the importance of conservation of natural habitats. It features excellent animation and great voice acting by the cast. The movie is packed with humor, action, and emotion that will keep the viewers enthralled throughout.

In conclusion, Delhi Safari is a delightful animated movie that is suitable for all ages. It tells a story of camaraderie and courage that teaches the audience about the value of natural habitats and respecting other beings on this planet. It is a must-watch for everyone who wants to be entertained and wants to learn something about conservation as well.

Delhi Safari is a 2012 animated movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 37.

Delhi Safari is the story of a journey undertaken by a leopard cub, his mother, a monkey, a bear and a parrot when the forest they live in is on the verge of destruction. Builders have encroached upon their forest and the animals decide to go to Delhi and protest in front of the parliament and ask the parliament some very simple yet pertinent questions they were thinking of– why has man become the most dangerous animal? Doesn't man understand that if the forests and the animals don't co-exist with humans, the balance of the ecosystem will be endangered?

The film starts with Yuvraj (or 'Yuvi', for short) (Swini Khara in the Original Hindi Version) saying that he lost his father, Sultan (Sunil Shetty) in the morning, but doesn't want to lose his home at any cost. The film carries a flashback of the morning with Yuvi and Sultan playing in the forest and Sultan teaching self-defence to Yuvi while his mother, Begum (Urmila Matondkar) enters. The two mock her for her too much caring attitude towards son that gets Begum angry and she goes. Soon, Begum forgives Sultan and Yuvraj (following a song - her one weakness). However, while coming back, a whole pack of bulldozers come from nowhere and proceed to demolish the surrounding jungle. Begum manages to escape, but Yuvi and Sultan are trapped. The two try to protest bulldozers but land at a site in the forest where they see all the trees missing. In a bid to save Yuvi, Sultan catches Yuvi in his mouth and tosses him to Begum. However, he himself is killed by a human wielding a shotgun, making the whole forest a large enemy of the humans. A talk happens with attendants of all the animals in the area. Many believe that leaving their homes is the only way to survive; however, Bajrangi, a monkey (Govinda), says that he would beat out the wits of those men with his so-called " vanarsena”  - Marela (Sanjai Mishra) and Bharela (Saurabh Shukla), but Bagga the bear (Boman Irani) advises him to talk to humans and Bajrangi asks whether there is anyone who knows the language of humans. A white bird, seemingly a pigeon, Hawa Hawaai (Deepak Dobriyal) pipes up, saying he knows someone who knows both animal and human languages. Yuvi meets the white bird the next day, and asks who is the one he said about. The white bird says the animal he spoke of is Alex (Akshaye Khanna), a parrot who lives with a director, Vikram Khosla. Bajrangi, his "army" of two monkeys, Hawa Hawaai, Bagga and Yuvi go and kidnap the parrot and convince him to go to Delhi with them to talk to the parliament and save their land. Initially refusing, Alex agrees to go to Delhi. Begum, Bagga, Bajrangi and his army board a train to Delhi from Mumbai. After some time Yuvi joins them and Alex refuses to continue until Bajrangi drops his weapons, which he reluctantly does after Bagga hangs him upside down. They then reach Gujarat with guidance of road from Raju, a bat. In Gujarat they meet flamingos and a couple who give them shelter in their homes. One of the flamingos strictly advises them not to cross the banyan tree to avoid the wolf Kaalia (Prem Chopra) and his gang. But Bajrangi goes there and ties Alex using a rope for Kaalia to kill him so that no one can doubt him. Yuvi spots Bajrangi and confronts him but they are spotted by Kaalia. Begum arrives in time to save them.

After this incident Alex pretends to have lost his voice. The animals consult a doctor  Jadibuti   Baba  a turtle who prescribes some ayurvedic medicines of sandalwood, rose, guava to recover Alex's voice, claiming that he has hypertension, stress and high blood pressure. Bajrangi wholeheartedly does the hard work, sometimes himself getting injured. One day he gets to know that Alex was just pretending and chases him leading himself to inadvertently hit a beehive. All the animals run with bees chasing them. A thrilling experience of trains follows after which Bajrangi tells Alex how guilty he feels of thinking to kill him. Alex also realizes how selfish he was and decides to help animals to help them to justice. Begum tells that no one is going to Delhi after listening to a tiger's story of how he only survived death at a human's hands by being a coward and forsaking his old ways; thankfully, following a pep talk and seeing Sultan's spirit and Yuvi who inspires them, Begum changes her mind and with renewed hope, proceeds to Delhi. They finally reach Delhi and tell their message through Alex to the Prime Minister of the country that they want peace between humans and animals and how this young little cub Yuvi inspired all of them to go to Delhi despite all the incidents. In the last scene, it is shown the jungle is saved courtesy of a shared land act (with the area being called the "Sanjay Gandhi National Park-Borivali") and all are happy and settled. The film ends with all animals settled in the Jungle with Yuvi seeing his father's spirit and Begum together happy and Yuvi smiling.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 15% based on 13 reviews. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 37 out of 100 based on 6 critics. Times of India gave Delhi Safari 3 stars. Rohit Khilnani of rediff gave it 3.5 stars and called it a must watch. Roshni Devi of koimoi gave it 2.5 stars. Social film rating site MOZVO gave it 3.5 stars putting it in Recommended category. Multiple critics noted Delhi Safari's out-of-date and subpar animation. Some people noted that the character Alex the Parrot's lack of flight skills and fondness of the domesticated life was similar to the character Blu from Blue Sky Studios'  Rio . Others felt that the story of Yuvi's father's death and his later appearance as a ghost was ripping off the story of Simba from Disney's The Lion King. The film was also widely criticized for its unoriginal plot, many believing the "Animal road-trip" and "stop the humans" storylines to be too similar to Dreamwork's  Madagascar  and Warner Brothers'  Happy Feet,  respectively. Despite criticism, it was awarded National Film Award for Best Animated Film at the 60th National Film Awards with a citation "Animation and animal kingdom come together in showcasing the enormous significance of harmonious cohabitation of humans and nature. State-of the-Art Indian technology employed in this film should make us proud!".

DELHI SAFARI

By: debbie lynn elias

delhi 4

Bollywood’s gone Hollywood, 3D animation style, that is, with DELHI SAFARI. Talk about enjoyable!! Filled with family, friendship and fun, DELHI SAFARI is an adventure for children and adults of all ages!! A real delight! Animals beyond cute and, in some cases, impishly bad; an environmental message, Bollywood production numbers, superb 3D animation and characters and recognizable star-power voices (in the English version) all make DELHI SAFARI a perfect family film for the holidays and beyond.

In India, leopards rule the jungle. With wisdom and kindness, Sultan is loved by all, especially by his wife Begum and their young cub, Yuvi. Filled with the same energy of young children and cubs the world over, Yuvi is an adorable handful and of course, acts like he’s 2 going on 20. Anxious to be “just like Dad”, Yuvi is beyond excited when Sultan agrees to start teaching him about being a ruler. But that excitement quickly comes to and end when Sultan is brutally murdered by land developers plowing down the jungle in the animals’ Mumbai home.

delhi 5

With the animals in an uproar, they chant back “Live Among Nature”, but their cries fall on deaf ears as the only word the developers understand is “money.” A defiant and angry little cub, Yuvi wants to fight back – fight for the jungle and to avenge his father’s death. Like any mother, Begum wants none of that and is willing to quietly move elsewhere and live in sorrowful peace. But Yuvi will not be silenced and his jungle friends quickly hop on the bandwagon. Bajrangi the Monkey is ready to go to war against the humans while Bagga the Bear thinks talk and compromise in a more humane manner is the way to go if they only get to Parliament in Delhi and plead their case. Only problem is the animals can’t talk “human.” Ah…but there is one jungle friend who can – Alex the Parrot. Alex loves humans. He lives with some. His cage is made of gold and he’s treated like a king – he has snacks and loves to watch tv and movies and, thanks to all his hours of tv watching he has learned to conversationally speak with the humans. But there’s another problem. Alex hates animals and there’s no way he’ll go willing with Yuvi, Bagga and Bajrangi. To Bajrangi, the answer is simple. Kidnap Alex and bring him along anyway.

delhi 12

And so our little group sets out on their own DELHI SAFARI as they make the 700+ mile trek north from Mumbai, getting more than their share of adventures (and a beautiful travelogue of India) along the way. Facing robbers, trains, dancing flamingos, hungry hyenas and even death, nothing will stop Yuvi and his friends. But what will happen when they finally reach Delhi? Will they gain an audience with Parliament? Will the humans hear their cries?

Written by Suresh Nair and Girish Dhamija together with writer/director and Mumbai native and 3D champion, Nikhil Advani, DELHI SAFARI marks the first Indian animated 3D film. Clean, crisp, Crayola 64 animation sets the tone with bright – but not super saturated – color, immersing us in the animal world. Notable is that the use of 3D is never “gimmicky”. It has a very free-flowing organic naturalism to it and gives the film just that little something extra. When it comes to the animation and CGI textures, with DELHI SAFARI, backgrounds – while colorful and bright – are matte and immobile, with animation focusing on the characters and action in the foreground. A fallacy that we so often see with animated films, and yes, even with Disney/Pixar, is that there is often so much happening that you don’t know where to turn your eye. With DELHI SAFARI, we know the background is there, the screen is filled with color, but movement and dialogue is in the foreground, thus allowing one to actually pay attention to the story and dialogue. And what story and dialogue!!

delhi 9

21st century colloquialisms and pop culture reference infuse the dialogue with an organic free-flowing casual sensibility that will engage kids and adults alike. Sounding like kids on a playground, timing is perfect and verbiage is so spot on with the conversation and vernacular of kids today. Pranks and calling each other “stupid” -these are things that while many may say, “boo hiss” and that shouldn’t be in a film or tv show, I say embrace them as this is reality and not being done or said in a harmful manner – just like in DELHI SAFARI. Animals pick on each other, pull pranks, and when they cross the line, there is sage advice and lessons to be learned that kick into play. But what stands out is that kids and adults will immediately tap into the story because of this authentic dialogue exchange. The execution of anthropomorphism is brilliant!

delhi 2

The tongue-in-cheek humor for adults built into the dialogue and star power voicing is to-die-for. As Pigeon, Christopher Lloyd makes reference to a Klingon talking parrot (uh, in case you forgot, Lloyd played a Klingon in a Star Trek movie); Bajrangi the monkey adds a Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry and spaghetti western vocal quality which is complimented by animation scenes that parody that with guns and weapons; Bagga the Bear, voiced by Brad Garrett, harkens in look and voice to the beloved Baloo the Bear in Disney’s The Jungle Book or even Smokey the Bear with the little hat; Alex the Parrot with his multiplicity of languages and mimicry is a nod to C3P0 in Star Wars .

delhi 6

The pop culture touchstones within the film only make it that much more embraceable and effective. Yes, everyone can see many strong resemblances to The Lion King – but they are beloved moments from the film that resonate. The stampede in The Lion King is here in DELHI SAFARI a stampede of machinery chasing the animals through the gorge. Visions of Sultan that come to Yuvi mirror those of Mustafa and Simba. The Flamingo conga line has been used by Disney in several films, but never with Jane Lynch providing an over-the-top laugh-out-loud voicing. The evil hyenas bearing down on Yuvi may look strangely menacing and familiar, but it works and is appropriate to the story. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and, it serves to engage the audience.

delhi 11 - bollywood

Adventure abounds and keeps one engaged – often with mouth agape and eyes mesmerized – with everything from the beauty of the forest to attack of the bees (one of the coolest scenes in the film) to an Indiana Jones type race through a mine shaft. Gotta love little Yuvi’s “Oh look! A train!” when he sees the mining cart and tracks…. Too cute. The innocence that leads to adventure that leads to thinking and figuring out how to move ahead and get out of sticky situations is beyond welcoming. This is how kids think and view the world. I can so see my 8 and 10 year old nephews going, “Oh look! A train! Let’s get in!” and then taking off, jetting around but then having to figure out what to do next. DELHI SAFARI engages the audience both visually and intellectually.

delhi 8

The messaging of the film is clear but never over-bearing or preachy. This is a wonderful story about family and friendship, forgiveness (bad Monkey!!!), the coming together of people and animals that look different, talk different – we may look different, but inside we’re really the same – and with the environment and deforestation as the core, is fantastic. We’ve seen animated stories about the environment, but not the specific issue of deforestation. (I think one of the best films on that issue to date is Sean Connery’s Medicine Man ). Honing in on this specific issue allows for real perspective and for kids to grasp environmental concepts more clearly. Sometimes it’s a lot easier to identify with one aspect as opposed to the entire issue. If kids and adults can’t see from this film that the world really is intertwined and animals and people are dependent upon each other and face the same challenges in each world, then there is no hope for those folks. Particularly impressive is the voicing of Tara Strong and Tom Kenny who, as Yuvi and Alex, respectively, imbue a plucky spirit into each, embodying the concept that even the smallest creatures/kids can make a difference and create a big roar.

delhi 7

My one big concern, however, is the opening scene with little Yuvi and that big tear rolling down his cute little face as he tells us about losing his father and now losing his home. Such heartbreak is not really an ideal way to open an animated children’s film……It may upset some of the littlest moviegoers….it made me sad. BUT, having said that, thankfully the filmmakers do a quick but organic transition into an upbeat happy sequence with father and son leopard bonding and a song to soothe a mad mom. And let’s just say how great Vanessa Williams is with her voicing of Begum. Soothing, comforting. You can almost feel your own head in your mom’s lap with her stroking your hair.

And what would any film from India be without music In DELHI SAFARI we find a wonderful blend of African beats, Bollywood and pop – there is something for everyone. Very much appreciated is that the music never overpowers the story or the film. It compliments it and serves as part of the story.

Also concerning are the animal names. I know this is DELHI SAFARI and the film comes from India, but the names may not be memorable for the audience. However, while the names may not be memorable, the characters, the color, the story, the heart and the fun will be – for years to come. Sign me up for this safari!

Voice Cast: Vanessa Williams (Begum), Jane Lynch (Female Flamingo), Brad Garrett (Bagga the Bear), Christopher Lloyd (Pigeon), Tara Strong (Yuvi), Tom Kenny (Alex the Parrot), Cary Elwes (Sultan), Jason Alexander (Male Flamingo and Hyena Cook), Carlos Alazraqui (Bajrangi)

Positive Messages

Delhi Safari encourages wildlife preservation and environmental awareness of animal habitats. Teamwork and friendship are also portrayed positively -- the group sticks together even through tough times.

Positive Role Models

The leopard mom will do anything to save her cub, and the bear is the voice of reason. The parrot and the monkey's truce and eventual friendship teaches that opposites can still become pals. The cub makes everyone think of more than themselves.

Violence & Scariness

The leopard father is killed by a construction crew (he's shot and falls to his death). The intense death happens in slow motion, with the mom and cub watching. The monkey is basically a warmonger for the majority of the movie and has a lot of weapons. He even wears a warrior-style headband and attempts to injure or kill Alex the parrot.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

There's a brief scene of a human man bringing home his date in what appears to be a "casting couch" situation. The producer puts his hand on his date's legs and says he's considering making her part bigger. She's wearing a midriff-baring top and a miniskirt. But just as they're about to kiss, an animal obscures the PDA. Alex says a female bird is "hot."

Language includes "stupid," "coward," and "dumb," as well as some fart jokes and an exclamation of "good God!"

Products & Purchases

Some mentions of companies and news organizations found in Delhi, India.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Jokes about how a coconut milk must've been old, because the monkey and parrot start slurring their words. Alex says he feels like his owner when he comes home late and starts tripping.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Delhi Safari is an animated talking-animal adventure that includes a couple of frightening scenes and some innuendo. Most disturbing is an intense scene in which a father leopard is killed by a real estate development's construction crew; the scene is in slow motion and the mother and cub witness the death. Aasi monkey is a weapons-carrying warmonger who attempts to injure or kill a couple of different animals and wants to declare war on the humans. One scene shows a man putting his hand on his somewhat scantily clad date's legs and implying that he'll reward her for fooling around with him. Language includes insults like "dumb," "stupid," and some scatological jokes. Like most animal films, there's a strong message about caring for the environment and wildlife preservation. Inappropriate content for an animated film

What's the story.

In an Indian jungle, a leopard family reigns supreme until the father leopard (voiced by Cary Elwes ) is killed by a real estate developer's construction crew. In response to the news that their leader is dead and their habitat is about to be displaced, mother leopard Begum ( Vanessa Williams ) and her cub join Bajrangi, a militant monkey ( Carlos Alazraqui ); Bagga, a sensible bear ( Brad Garrett ); and Alex, a parrot that can "talk human" ( Tom Kenny ) to travel to Delhi and protest the development. Along the way, the group overcomes obstacles and strife between Alex and Bajrangi.

Is It Any Good?

There are too many disconnects in DELHI SAFARI to make it a must-see. Because it's dubbed into English, the sound and the mouth movements don't quite sync, and it's more noticeable and distracting here than in other dubbed films. The scene where the father leopard is killed is unnecessarily drawn out and extremely intense and upsetting. The animation is outdated, and some of the songs are pretty forgettable -- though the flamingo song and the end-credits routine are fun, Bollywood-style numbers.

On the bright side, the movie's eco-friendly messages are positive, but those are available in most animal tales. With so many homages and references to other animal movies (particularly The Lion King and Madagascar ), this Indian import seems more like a copycat with a few Bollywood songs thrown in to the mix. This just isn't original enough to bother with unless your kids adore anything and everything featuring talking wild animals.

Delhi Safari Review

' src=

  • May 6, 2013

The rest of the world also watches the family films coming out of Hollywood these days, and it was only a matter of time before other countries took a shot at duplicating the familiar formula. Delhi Safari is a CGI film produced in India. For the international market, the producers hired well-known Hollywood stars to voice the friendly cartoon animals that go a journey to save their jungle habitat from urban land development. It utilizes all the tropes of the animated genre aimed at families, from wacky animals to big musical productions, in moving the fairly generic conflict between civilization and the wild towards a predictable conclusion.

Delhi Safari is a pastiche of other movies, from The Lion King to the latest films by Pixar. Yuvi (Tara Strong) the leopard cub sees his father shot to death by human land developers, and talks a group of other animals into confronting the government of India. How will the animals communicate with the humans? Alex (Tom Kenny) the wisecracking parrot can speak both animal and human languages, since he originally lived in a movie producer’s house in the city.

The group of animals get the bright idea to force Alex into airing their grievances against humanity. Guiding Yuvi along this journey are his wise mother, Begum (Vanessa Williams), a pigeon (Christopher Lloyd), a laid-back bear (Brad Garrett), and an aggressive monkey (Carlos Alazraqui), not to mention a few other wild animals that pop up along the journey. Voice cameos by Jason Alexander, Carey Elwes and Jane Lynch also briefly appear.

The voicework by the familiar Hollywood actors is surprisingly strong for a production that was made outside the Hollywood system. The casting choices all fit their animal characters very well and the only odd thing that might be noticed are the occasional miscues in the lip-syncing of the animals’ mouths and English voices, since the animation was originally intended for the Hindi language. Most young American children will have little idea this movie was originally intended for a foreign audience, aside from a few references to Delhi and the governmental structure of India. It looks and sounds a lot like the latest animated Disney films, at least in ambition if not execution.

Parents should exercise some judgment for their very youngest children in deciding to screen Delhi Safari . Yuvi’s father is graphically killed very early in the film by a human hunter, and the scene is repeatedly referenced as the movie progresses. The one thing separating Delhi Safari from most Hollywood fare intended for families with young children is the level of graphic cartoon violence. One of the monkeys is constantly waving around accurately modeled guns and threatening to wage violence on other animals or the humans. It is mostly played for laughs but I know some parents would likely find it troubling for the kindergarten set.

Delhi Safari does not bring anything new or original to the animated family movie genre we have not seen before, but a few elements of the Bollywood tradition. In spite of that, the story and dialogue overcomes that handicap in a rousing family adventure that will entertain children and even some of their parents. Some of the jokes will go over children’s heads, as they are clearly intended for adults.

★

Delhi Safari runs 96:38 minutes on a BD-25, encoded in AVC at solid parameters. The CGI-animated movie was also produced in 3D, but that version is not included. The 2:35:1 framing of the 2D version is presented at 1080P in stunning clarity, though this is not flawless demo material if one is used to the wonders of the latest Pixar movies on Blu-ray .

The contrast and other normal aspects of the image are all perfect or nearly perfect. Incredible sharpness of the CGI models is only mildly impeded by a slightly softer design for the primary settings, as animals move from the jungle through the desert, eventually into the urban confines of India.

The CGI animation does not look far behind the latest Hollywood creations. The primary characters, from Yuvi the leopard cub to the rest of his ragtag group of animals, are all modeled with an extreme level of texture and refined detail. Their fur bristles and moves with realistic fluidity, at least as much as cartoon animals can move. Where the animation starts looking a little more threadbare are in the less ornate backgrounds and secondary characters. The colorful palette of the jungle terrain bursts in living color, from the inkiest black levels to brilliant primary shades of both magenta and green.

Digital animation almost always looks great in HD. Delhi Safari does have one notable problem besides infrequent aliasing that even amateur videophiles will likely notice. Some solid backgrounds of uniform color band with obvious problems. The banding is almost always confined to specific shots, but the magnitude is larger than I have seen in a few years on Blu-ray. I doubt the movie’s intended demo, children, will find much problem with the banding, but it does keep Delhi Safari from attaining a perfect score. It appears endemic to the animation master and not as a result of a poor video encode.

Animated movies always have a leg up when it comes to the audio, as everything from the music to the dialogue has been carefully recorded in a professional studio. Delhi Safari has a strong 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack, following in the tradition of other animated family films. Its musical numbers are firmly grounded in the Bollywood tradition, though there is really only one specific song that Americans will automatically associate with Bollywood music. Most of the musical performances are very similar in style and approach to something you might see in the latest family film by Disney. A sweeping sound design gives all 5.1 channels a workout at various times, though the mix is a step behind the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

Dialogue from the various Hollywood B-listers is crystal-clear and balanced well into the overall sound mix, set against a backdrop of pinpoint imaging from the surround presentation. Solid bass reproduction and an appropriate usage of surround elements add to the lively atmosphere of the movie. Delhi Safari’s soundtrack has perfect fidelity and a pleasing dynamic range that is not particularly subtle or innovative, but handles the demands of a children’s movie very well. What prevents the lossless surround mix from attaining reference status is an annoying tendency to pump up the volume of the musical numbers, far beyond the rest of the movie’s scenes. I would not characterize the musical scenes as harsh sounding, but viewers listening at reference levels will nearly be overwhelmed by the blasting volume of the singing.
