You have lots of options when it comes to putting together a Las Vegas itinerary . It depends on what you want to do and see, as well as how many days you have in the city.

How many days to spend in Vegas

It’s hard to see all of Las Vegas in a day, but if you’re short on time, two days is enough. Ideally, I recommend planning a 3-day trip to Vegas so you can see all the top attractions.

Begin your  day in Las Vegas  by visiting the  Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign . You can catch the  Hop-On/Hop-Off bus there and take it to Downtown Las Vegas, where you can explore this entertainment area.

Then, go to The Venetian  and check out  Madame Tussauds  and the  gondola rides  at the  Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later, head to the LINQ Promenade and ride the High Roller  during sunset. At night, walk to the  Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the  Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best  free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a  ticket  (It is also included at the  Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass ).

Seeing the  Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign  is a rite of passage, so start there. This is also where you can catch the  Hop-On/Hop-Off bus , which will transport you around the Strip.

If you like thrill rides, stop at  New York-New York ‘s  Big Apple Coaster  before continuing downtown. Then you can do the  Las Vegas Downtown – Fremont St. walking tour , one of the best  things to do in downtown Las Vegas .

Later on, head to the  LINQ Promenade , where you can eat, shop, and ride the  High Roller . You can also get awesome views from the 1,149-foot-tall  SkyPod  at  the STRAT . The SkyPod has a late-night bar and lounge, so it’s the perfect place to wrap up a  Las Vegas couples itinerary .

A  Las Vegas weekend itinerary  is ideal because you can experience some  daytime activities in Las Vegas  before diving into the nightlife.

First, take a break from the Strip with a half-day  Hoover Dam tour . When you return to Vegas, take a quick break, then do go to a  pool party in Las Vegas.  If that’s not your thing, you can take in the scene at  Fremont Street , perhaps with a ride on the  SlotZilla zip line  or a visit to the  Mob Museum , one of the  best Las Vegas museums .

At night, walk to the  Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas , where you’ll have a great view of the  Bellagio Fountains . The water show is one of the best  free things to do in Vegas , although if you want to see it from the Paris viewing deck, you should reserve a  ticket  (It is also included at the  Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass ).

If you feel it’s to early to go to bed, grab cocktails at a swanky casino or do a bar crawl .

Ideally, I recommend at least 3 days for your Las Vegas trip so you can fully enjoy all the top attractions. Spend your first day taking the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour , starting at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign .

As you make your way along the Strip, stop by The Venetian , where you can see the wax figures at Madame Tussauds and take a gondola ride at the Grand Canal Shoppes .

Later on, check out the entertainment and attractions at the LINQ Promenade . If you perfectly time your ride on the High Roller , you can catch the Bellagio Fountains water show from the observation wheel.

The next morning, get in a nice swim or sunbathe at your hotel’s pool before the day gets too hot. Then, check out a Las Vegas museum , like the Mob Museum or the Erotic Heritage Museum .

In the afternoon, get a spectacular view of the city by taking a Las Vegas Strip Helicopter tour , a premium attraction with the Go Las Vegas All-Inclusive Pass .

Afterwards, grab dinner and drinks at Señor Frogs.

A first-timer's guide to Las Vegas

If there is any destination where its reputation precedes itself, it is probably the raucous one of fabulous Las Vegas , Nevada.

You likely already have an image in your head shaped by years of pop culture: flashing neon lights, dice rolling across a craps table, singing slot machines and the “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” ad campaign from the early 2000s. 

But what I love about Las Vegas is that it constantly reinvents itself, meaning your experience will be unique to that moment in time, your interests and the people you’re traveling with. Yes, it is Sin City, boasting gambling and strip clubs, but it is also more than that, catering to a ton of different sins too. 

Is yours gluttony? Because there are plenty of high-end restaurants and epic buffets serving up memorable meals. Is it greed? Beyond gambling, there is tons of great shopping. Is it sloth? There is no shortage of amazing spas and pools to visit once you have grown tired of the clattering noise of the casino. 

You can still find poker high rollers, Elvis impersonators and drive-thru wedding chapels, but the Vegas of today also hosts megastar residencies like Adele and U2 in spectacular, intimate theaters. It also stays at the edge of technology with novelties like robot room service, champagne vending machines and robo puppies. 

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your first visit.

When to go to Las Vegas

In most destinations you’re probably trying to avoid the crowds, but you just may want to schedule your Vegas trip to coincide with popular days when the city is buzzing with excitement. Any sporting event (Super Bowl weekend, NCAA college basketball tournament, NBA finals) will see droves of visitors, and federal holidays (Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) will attract travelers from across the country looking for a fun four-day weekend.  You’ll see soaring prices for accommodations, but that may be worth it if you want to be in Vegas when the city is electric.

Another busy time to flag: the Consumer Electronics Show brings people from around the world, with the airport often adding international flights to accommodate the passenger traffic. 

Still, there’s no bad time to visit this dynamic city, and if you want to shoot for a period with fewer crowds, you will be rewarded. There's still a party nearly every day of the week, all times of the day. If you head to Vegas mid-week in the summer months, the excruciating summer desert sun (upwards of 104 ° F/40 ° C) will drive down resort prices, but you’ll still be able to keep cool with air conditioning everywhere (you’ll likely need a sweater inside) and enjoy the day club/pool party season.

How long do I need in Vegas?

I have visited Vegas too many times to count over the last two decades, and as much as I adore this saucy city, I cannot remember a single time when I was not really ready to go home on day four. There is no quieter flight than the return flight home from Vegas. Build in a day for rest after – trust me. 

Getting around Las Vegas

The main thing to remember about getting around is that objects are farther away than they appear. The casino resorts are huge, and that makes distance really hard to judge visually. A resort that may look just three doors down may actually be more than a mile (1.6 km) away, so keep that in mind when you decide to walk between destinations. 

Still, there are a variety of options for travel between resorts other than on foot. Some resorts offer trams and shuttle services to get you between their properties. Uber and Lyft are common – but beware most resorts have designated pick-up and drop-off points. Read more about transportation around Vegas.  

Where to stay

Keeping in mind what I said about distances, you may want to stay close to where most of your plans are taking you, especially if you’re attending a big event and don’t want to fight for an Uber after. Vegas caters to a lot of conventions and large events, so there is a variety of hotels and amenities available. 

You'll always find a new resort in Vegas and this year the newest on the block is Fontainebleau , which recently opened its doors with a concert featuring Justin Timberlake. 

I personally love a location in the middle of the Strip near the Cosmopolitan and Aria as well as the iconic Caesars Palace . For those seeking an Oceans Eleven-themed trip, the Bellagio recently refreshed its fountain view rooms. (Pro tip: Turn on your room TV to the dedicated fountain channel so you hear the music while you watch the show from your window.) 

On the other end of the Strip, Resorts World has several hotels (Hilton, Conrad and Crockfords) in one. This is a new, sleek resort but you can often find great deals to stay here. At some there is a “boutique hotel” within the larger property that provides a more elevated experience. 

For a quieter visit, look for what’s called a “non-gaming” hotel. These hotels don’t have a casino on the property and tend to be a bit more tranquil – by Vegas standards. The Waldorf Astoria , Four Seasons and Vdara all fall in this category, and Marriott and Hilton both have some non-gaming properties just off the strip. 

When booking your stay, heads up: the price you see is not the price you pay. Nearly every resort charges what they call a “resort fee'' which ranges from USD$35–50 a night plus tax. So it's not uncommon for that $30/night bargain to be more like $100/night when the bill is settled. Make sure to check the resort fee on the hotel website and do the math before you book.

It’s worth walking through different resorts to see all their unique personalities, from replicating Paris and Venice, to wowing audiences with fountains and conservatories of fresh blooms. Part of the Vegas experience is to appreciate the eclectic decor and themes, often a reflection of Vegas’ personality in the year they were built. At night, grab a ticket to a show. The ticket price may seem expensive, but you’re usually seeing the artist in a more intimate venue than you would elsewhere, and since the production doesn't move daily like on a tour, you'll experience a pretty spectacular performance. If you need a break from the buzz of the Strip, don’t forget Vegas has a lot of great outdoor activities too. Red Rock Canyon Recreation Area and the newly opened Ice Age Fossils State Park are great places to get outside.

Don’t forget to check out Fremont Street as well. Along with giving you the feel of classic Rat Pack Vegas, this part of the city is in the middle of a renaissance with hot restaurants with less expensive prices than the Strip and new hotels like the Circa , which boasts Stadium Swim, a huge rooftop pool with a 40ft HD-screen TV.

The successful franchise is beloved by locals, so go early for a drink in the nearby Park MGM complex and enjoy the city’s spirited support of its team. 

My favorite thing to do in Las Vegas

I rarely gamble when I’m in Vegas these days. When I go, I’m there for the chance to experience its spectacular entertainment options and its ever-changing culinary scene, which draws chefs from around the world. 

Some restaurants, like supper clubs The Mayfair and Delilah , offer those two experiences together. 

There’s always a new restaurant to try here, so by all means, look up what the hot new thing is. But the one restaurant I cannot resist coming back to over and over is Roy Choi’s Best Friend . Based on the chef’s beloved LA food truck, you’ll walk through a faux bodega to get to the dining room where a DJ is spinning while you share Korean BBQ with your friends. Make a reservation in advance – this place books up. (A side note: Roy Choi and actor/director Jon Favreau just teamed up to bring a real-life version of the food truck from the 2014 movie Chef into the Park MGM!)

I’m also a big fan of checking out restaurants off the strip, like Esther’s Kitchen and Carson's Kitchen in Downtown Las Vegas . The Neon Museum , a bit north of there, is also a great off-the-beaten-path thing to do that allows you to experience Vegas’ sparkle of previous decades. 

Finally, for a splash of nostalgia, I love to take friends for a cocktail at the Peppermill ; with its sunken living room-esque booths and moody neon lighting, this place feels like a time warp into 1970s Las Vegas. It’s a vibe. 

Average costs in Las Vegas

Let me set some expectations: long gone are the days of the dollar buffet and the cheap Vegas stay. You’ll still find some bargains here and there – but expect a mid-range (to expensive) weekend depending on the sins you choose to indulge in.

Tipping in the US is the norm, and in Las Vegas you may see a service charge already included in a bill. Still, there are some instances, like for large parties, where the service charge may not be included so always double check. 

Even with service fees, there are still some instances where tipping is expected: when the door attendant brings your bags to the room, when a staff member has gone above and beyond (like snagging you a last-minute reservation), or when servers provide bottle service at the club. Also, when you’re gambling, drinks are often free but you’re expected to tip the waiting staff at some point. (Expect your drink to take some time to be delivered, as they hope you spend a little more money gambling.)

The Treasure Island Hotel and Casino offer we mentioned above was over $280 cheaper than the package available with CheapTickets, with the exact same flights, so it’s worth shopping around.

Another fully-dedicated Las Vegas booking site, Vegas.com enables you to book vacation packages, shows, tours, attractions, and even weddings. When searching for a package, each hotel listing features a customer rating, and some have a secondary rating for the hotel location or room quality.

Individual promotions are clearly advertised on each hotel, including Insider Pricing , which is an exclusive offer that can’t be found on another website .

As the name suggests, LasVegas.com is a travel site for booking hotels and vacation packages to Las Vegas. As your 1-stop-shop for Las Vegas, you can also book shows, tours, and attractions.

The website is not as slick as the likes of Expedia or Hotwire, but it does display its special offers clearly. Discounts and freebies are featured in red , including room discounts, free breakfast, or food, beverage, or attraction credits to spend at the hotel.

Travelocity is another popular online travel agent owned by Expedia Group. Similar to Hotwire, Travelocity features Unreal Deals with quite a few offers stating savings of  100% of the flight cost (the equivalent of getting the flight for free).

Travelocity does not provide a loyalty program, however, its packages were at the cheaper end of the 10 websites that we compared . As with most Expedia Group brands, Travelocity’s website has easy search and booking functionality with a huge selection of filters to refine your search.

American Airlines Vacations is the airline’s package booking site where you can book flights, hotels, and car rentals all in 1 place. As you would expect, packages include flights with American Airlines only , so you’re not going to find the cheapest airfares available due to the absence of low-cost carriers. Still, if you’re an avid fan of American Airlines or an AAdvantage member, you should be able to find a pretty good deal.

AAdvantage members can earn points on qualifying flights and will receive an extra 1,000 bonus miles when booking a package deal . AA says that by booking a flight and hotel in combination, customers have access to private airfare prices only available when booking a vacation.

When searching for a package, the results page has a clear layout featuring the hotel star rating, Tripadvisor review score, and any special deals included with the accommodation. The accommodation thumbnail image is very small, but thankfully if you click the image, a larger pop-up gallery displays without needing to visit the accommodation page.

The total price is displayed, along with a per-person price and monetary savings against the standard rate. AA allows customers to make monthly payments through its financing partner Uplift, which is a handy feature for those that want to spread the cost.

Southwest Vacations provides vacation packages within the U.S., Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. These destinations are the same as the Southwest Airlines route network, seeing as this is the only airline used with its packages.

When you book with Southwest Vacations, you can earn your usual Rapid Rewards miles on flights , but occasionally there will be limited time promotions that mean you can earn even more. This can be available with selected hotel promotions or for specific destinations. At the time of writing, members could earn up to 6,500 on bookings to Mexico and the Caribbean.

Kayak is a metasearch site that mostly directs customers to book with a third party such as Expedia or Travelocity. It’s a great site to use for comparing prices and has excellent search and filtering functionality. You can filter by which airlines you would like to travel with, hotel amenities, and whether they include any freebies, such as breakfast or parking.

We all know the cheapest flights are not always the quickest flights, and Kayak has a handy dropdown on each listing to see how much more a shorter flight will cost you. The Funjet Insiders Circle features a long list of hotel groups that offer Funjet customers “insider perks,” such as free private transfers, room upgrades, and complimentary excursions .

We searched for a package across all websites to see which offers the cheapest rate for a 7-night stay at the MGM Grand for 2 people with flights departing from New York City in November .

CheapTickets provided the cheapest option at $378 per person and was the cheapest regardless of flights from JFK or LaGuardia. The most expensive website was American Airlines Vacations , which is not surprising as the other websites packaged flights with low-cost carrier JetBlue.

Ex-Hawkeyes Megan Gustafson, Kate Martin join Las Vegas Aces teammates on White House trip

Although this is the first season on the Las Vegas Aces for Megan Gustafson and Kate Martin , the former Iowa women's basketball stars still got to enjoy the perks of winning a WNBA title.

The ex-Hawkeyes were on the Aces' trip to the White House on Thursday, helping celebrate Las Vegas' second consecutive championship won last fall. Gustafson may have been on the Phoenix Mercury in 2023 — while Martin was still in college — but the excitement for their new teammates' accomplishment is clear.

"Alright Hawks, checking in from the White House!" Gustafson said in a short video with Martin posted on Instagram. "We're excited."

"Go Hawks!"

The Iowa interest in the Aces has understandably skyrocketed in recent weeks. On the heels of signing Gustafson in early February, Las Vegas then drafted Martin 18th overall on April 15. Martin hasn't officially made the Aces roster yet — teams have until May 13 to finalize their rosters — but it appears that'll happen after she survived the latest round of cuts .

Former Iowa State star Ashley Joens , who played for the Aces during their WNBA championship season, also was part of the group that visited the White House.

Arizona Digest: Rattlers hold off rival Tucson Sugar Skulls for 3rd straight win

With quarterback Dalton Sneed out with another injury, the Rattlers turned to Garrett Kettle, who led them to a 38-32 victory over the Sugar Skulls in Tucson on Saturday night.

But it was more the defense than the offense that fought through for a win that was much closer than it should have been with a defense making six stops.

Nonetheless, it was the third consecutive win for the Rattlers (4-3), who are over .500 for the first time since winning their season opener, when Sneed was knocked out of that game after a half due to a knee injury.

Sneed didn't return until two weeks ago, the Rattlers' first home win of the season over Jacksonville, totaling four touchdowns. With the off week, the Rattlers returned to practice last week, but Sneed suffered an injury and became a game-time decision.

"I’ve never had to work so hard to get a first down," coach Kevin Guy said in a text. "A lot of that is because we don’t know who’s in the lineup from week to week. There’s no consistency. If I could borrow a healthy player from my son’s Powderpuff team that he coaches at his high school I would at this point.

"OrthoArizona has to be happy with their partnership with the Rattlers. We send half our team in there every Monday to see the doc."

The Rattlers relied on a defense that had six stops to win this one by a touchdown.

"That’s unheard of," Guy said. "Normally you would win by 28 points in that situation. The good news is, we found a way to get back in the race. We have to get better in a hurry if we will have a chance to beat Bay Area."

Kettle hit Jamal Miles from 4 yards out with a little more than three minutes to play to extend the Rattlers' lead to 38-25. The play was reviewed by officials after the Skulls twice challenged the touchdown. They felt Miles had trapped the ball, and they thought there was a false start. Both challenges failed.

The touchdown stood. But the Sugar Skulls came back with a touchdown, then tried an onside kick that Davontae Merriweather recovered for the Rattlers. With Tucson (1-6) out of timeouts, Kettle was able to take a knee to run out the clock.

Miles had two TDs, along with running back Shannon Brooks. Kettle hit Glenn Gibbons Jr., for a 33-yard score in the game.

The Rattlers return home Saturday night at Desert Diamond Arena to take on the Bay Area Panthers (6-1), who won the IFL championship last season behind Sneed.

Rattlers travel down I-10 for rivalry game

After both teams had a week off, Indoor Football League rivals Arizona Rattlers and Tucson Sugar Skulls will play each other in Tucson on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.

Before the bye week, the Rattlers (3-3) beat Jacksonville to win their second straight game to get to .500, as quarterback Dalton Sneed returned after being out since injuring his knee in the season opener.

Sneed passed for two TDs and ran for two more in the 55-35 win over then-winless Jacksonville . The Rattlers' other wins came against Iowa, which has won one game, and Northern Arizona in the opener. Tucson is 1-5 on the season, but the Sugar Skulls beat the Rattlers last year in April.

The Rattlers have been slowed by early-season injuries, but since running back Shannon Brooks returned two games ago, and now with Sneed back at quarterback, there is more stability on offense. The Rattlers have been without All-IFL safety Dillion Winfrey, but Jarmaine Doubs, played well in that spot in the Jacksonville game.

After Saturday, the Rattlers play their next two games at home at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale against defending IFL champion Bay Area Panthers (May 18) and the Duke City Gladiators (May 25).

Rising FC starts 2-game road trip

Phoenix Rising FC starts a two-game Eastern road trip with Wednesday's match against North Carolina FC in Cary, N.C., a Round of 32 game in the U.S. Open Cup, the more-than-century-old tournament for the American club championship.

The match is set for 4 p.m. Phoenix time at WakeMed Soccer Park. It will be streamed live on ussoccer.com, and the audio broadcast will be available on Rising FC's 'X' (formerly Twitter) feed simultaneously.

Rising FC is coming off a 1-1 draw with Sacramento Republic FC at home last weekend, while North Carolina drew Rhode Island, 0-0, at home.

"If we play like we did in the second half (Saturday) ... we start winning games. That was a tough team to break down. (Sacramento) is a defensively resolute team," Phoenix head coach Danny Stone said via the club's website.

Rising FC is allowing just a goal per game and at 3-2-4 sits in sixth place in the USL Championship Western Conference. North Carolina is 1-4-4 and is tied for last place in the East.

It's Rising FC's second trip to the Eastern time zone this season. The club defeated Rhode Island 3-1 last month. The last time Rising FC traveled to the Carolinas, it won the USL Championship final on November 12, 2023 in Charleston, South Carolina for its first league title.

A win Wednesday would put Phoenix in the final 16 teams playing to win the U.S. Open Cup, which would be the farthest the team has ever advanced in the tournament if it happens. Rising will visit Detroit City FC on Saturday at 2 p.m. Phoenix time.

Mercury heads to Seattle for preseason opener

After spending most of the training camp in San Diego, the Phoenix Mercury will hit the road once again to face the Seattle Storm on Tuesday at Climate Pledge Arena at 7 p.m., for the preseason opener. The game will not be televised. 

It will also mark the first game against former Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith since she signed with the Storm in free agency. The Mercury will begin the Nate Tibbetts era along with a revamped roster that includes just four returners from last season. The returning core of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Sophie Cunningham highlights the group of eleven veterans, five in their second or third years each, and six rookies.  The team also added 2021 WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper from the Chicago Sky.

The Mercury will have one more preseason game on Friday at Footprint Center against the Los Angeles Sparks before starting the season on Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Casa Grande's Ramos wins on TKO in Vegas

Super welterweight Jesús Alejandro Ramos of Casa Grande improved his pro record to 21-1 with a ninth-round technical knockout of Venezuela native Johan Gonzalez Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Ramos' fight was part of the Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia event. Cinco de Mayo weekend is a traditional major fight night in Las Vegas.

Gonzalez (34-3) had never lost a fight in which it was stopped before going the distance. Ramos had said he needed an impressive win to get back into the top contender ranks for a shot at a championship. He'd lost his previous fight, which was his first loss as a pro.
