Songfacts®:

  • This features Saint Etienne singer Sarah Cracknell on vocals. She also wrote the lyrics for the track. Dance music DJ and producer Mark Brown, is also one half of M.Y.N.C Project and the head of Cr2 Records.
  • This extensively samples from the operatic "Eliza's Aria" part of the "Wild Swans" suite by Australian composer Elena Kats Chernin (b1957). The version used in "The Journey Continues" is by soprano Jane Sheldon, which was used in some Lloyds TSB bank adverts in the UK. Cracknall told the Daily Mirror February 1, 2008: "Mark was a fan of Saint Etienne so he thought of me. He played me his track and I'd heard the original piece from the commercial. I really liked the ad, even though I thought it was for trains! Doing the track came really easily for me. Writing the words was very spontaneous and organic."
  • 30,000 separate still photographs were used to animate the song's video.

STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS

About a month before the RESOUNDWorship Worship Songwriting Retreat takes place, you receive an email from the leader who encourages you to write something new to bring along with you to share with your critique group. I think the encouragement is to arrive “with your latest, not your greatest”.

I had managed to do this the first time I went but life felt so busy and hectic in 2018 that I didn’t manage to get round to it.  When I arrived at the retreat I had been allocated the best room in the place, wide open balcony, amazing views – everything was set for songwriting brilliance – but it never came!

I went there with a real sense that I needed to hang around in Psalm 46 for a bit – the sense of being still.  I thought about all the stories in the Bible where through the power of God’s voice, touch, whisper, shout amazing things had happened – but how so often we can miss it because life is full of noise, busyness and chaos.  I’d also arrived with a tune that I couldn’t find words to fit – and that felt like an added pressure that I needed to write some lyrics to that, and also find a tune that would build a song around being still.

The teaching and sharing in the first few days were amazing – and it felt like God was using the time to help me unwind and quieten myself.  I had come from a really hectic and challenging time at work, and that couldn’t just be switched off.

I remember waking up on the Tuesday morning – the day of the concert where we all get chance to play one of our new songs to the rest of the retreaters – and I suddenly realised that the tune I had arrived with fitted with the words I had been thinking over.  I headed down for breakfast in a really excited state, headed back up to my room and wrote a verse and chorus to take to a 1:1 critique and then straight into my group session.  That afternoon saw an additional verse and bridge added – and when I shared again later that afternoon – my group encouraged me to lay back on the timing and allow the song to breathe.  I played it that night, with one of the group joining me – and this song was born.

A really useful reminder to me, and hopefully to you, that the God that we serve is really, really powerful – and that power works through us if we find the place to quieten ourselves and let him speak.

As a church, we regularly took part in the 40 Days initiative across Hull.  During 2007, there was a prayer that appeared in the daily study guide that included a prayer for use throughout the Lent period. This was as follows:

“Lord we ask that You would act, not according to the poverty of who we are or what we believe, but according to the greatness of who You are and what You can do”

Originally, this song had a chorus that simply set those words to music, but much has changed with it over the 11 years since four of the verses were written.

Hull has been the knocking boy of most of the country.  Regularly being reported as the worst place to live, and often finding itself at the top of every league table it would wish to be at the bottom of, and the bottom of every league table it would wish to be at the top of.  At the time of writing, teenage pregnancy was a significant issue in Hull – hence the reference in the first verse.  It is a city where, growing up, our young people don’t even feel they have the option to dream or imagine what a future would be like – whereas their peers in other areas feel that their future is full of options that they can determine and shape, for many in Hull they believe that their lives will amount to nothing – ambition quashed before it even starts to take shape.

And within Hull, there are areas that are criticised from within – and Bransholme, where Bodmin Road Church is based, is one of those areas.  Considered by many to be an area that they would avoid – and even with significant transformation and investment, those legacy issues still remain.

This song attempts to capture the position that Hull and Bransholme finds itself in, and cries out to God to act – in the way that only He can – and not to be limited by the times when we as His church feel that things can’t and won’t change.  The chorus attempts to stay true to the thrust of the prayer that inspired it.

And then 2017 happened – Hull was City of Culture. A song of this nature remained unwritten until something captured that part of the story.  The year started with a mesmerising light show, projected onto some of the most iconic buildings in the city culminating in the statement “We are Hull”.  Hull folk are proud – proud of their history, and proud of their heritage.  This song captures something of the journey that we as a city have been on – and continue to go on, where people choose to visit and are open to having their mind changed about Hull.

I hope you enjoy the song!

This is a tough one.

Bodmin Road Church is a family – a close family.  When one of us celebrates, the rest of us celebrate – when one of us is facing a difficult situation – we all want to be there to support.

2018 was a very difficult year for the church. One of our leaders, and a much loved member not just of our church community but the wider community, died following a battle with very aggressive brain tumours.  As a church, we had pulled out all the stops to pray for healing – believing in a God who could do miracles. We encouraged each other to be full of faith and stood with the family as they held on to hope.

I remember the last time that I visited Andrew at home.  As I walked out of the house – the words of the first verse and chorus pretty much landed straight off.  I quickly noted them down in my phone, not really sure what I was going to do with them.  I didn’t touch them again until months later – and in the two weeks between his death and the funeral sat down to finish the song.

When a situation like this happens in a church – there are a range of emotions / responses / reactions that so often don’t get talked about.  I wanted to find a way of giving voice to some of these – allowing us to open up to recognising how we were reacting, and taking that journey together.  We may all have questions, we may all struggle to understand why God can heal but doesn’t always, we may all know that there is a better place that exists beyond what we see – but it hurts when we lose someone we are close to.  God longs that we would involve him in those questions and involve him in those uncertainties – because he can be relied on.  The chorus says this:

“One thing I know is You are good Your grace has always been enough I will bring my cries before Your throne Knowing You are near, I am not alone

This song is an attempt to capture something of the way in which each person of the Trinity has a direct impact on our lives. From the recognition that Jesus, who was God, stepped down to become a man so that my sin could be forgiven, through the Father God who doesn’t get scared off by the giants that we face, finishing with the Holy Spirit as our Comfort, who guides and speaks to us.

Hear the Journey Tune Steve Perry Re-Recorded With Steve Lukather's Son

Not long after their 2022 wedding, Trev Lukather (son of Toto guitarist Steve Lukather) and Madison Cain-Lukather (daughter of Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain) were playing some vintage tunes on a road trip. They came across Journey's 1986 song "It Could Have Been You," which neither of them had ever heard. "We were just blown away," Trev Lukather tells Rolling Stone . "I loved the funkiness of it, and Steve Perry's vocals were just insane. We kept playing that song on repeat."

It was the start of an unlikely series of events that led to Perry singing on a new version of the song with Trev Lukather's new band the Effect, which features Nic Collins (son of Phil Collins) on drums. It's the leadoff single from the Effect's debut LP, landing sometime later this year. "They did an amazing version of it," Perry tells Rolling Stone . "In my opinion, it's completely current, refreshed, and ready to go out there and do some damage."

Trev Lukather was just 9 years old when he first met Perry at the studio of songwriter Randy Goodrum, co-writer of Perry's 1984 solo hits "Foolish Heart" and "Oh Sherrie." They reconnected 11 years later, once again via Goodrum, when Trev came to Steakhouse Studios in North Hollywood to play on one of his father's solo albums. They started chatting, and Trev invited Perry into his car to hear some music he'd created on his own. "He was like, ‘Oh my gosh, man, this is great,'" Lukather recalls. "‘When are you going to be in the studio next?' He wound up coming by the studio. And from that moment on, Steve has just been a mentor to me, along with my dad, and just a dear brother."

As every Journey fan knows, Perry doesn't have a great relationship with Jonathan Cain or his other former bandmates. They haven't worked together in nearly 30 years, and almost certainly never will again - even though a reunion would be a wildly lucrative endeavor. But he couldn't be more fond of Cain's son-in-law. When Trev pops into our Zoom call, Perry lights up and starts gently teasing him about his long, messy, blond hair. "The hair's on fire, Trev," he says. "It's looks lovely."

"It's bedhead, bro," Lukather responds. "I wake up like this, as people say."

The conversation quickly drifts to Perry's initial impressions of the young Lukather. "When I hear somebody that's musically got talent, just God-given talent and not somebody who wants to be something, but truly has got this drive in them, I can't stay away from it," says Perry. "And that's what happened when I heard Trev play the first time. I thought, ‘Jesus, man, this kid has taken his DNA to the next level.'"

Early in their relationship, after watching Lukather shred on the guitar, Perry gave him a crucial piece of advice that stuck with him. "He was like, ‘Let me ask you a question," Lukather recalls. "‘What do you want in the front row: guys or girls?' I was 20. I was like, ‘Steve, of course I want girls in the front row.' He said, ‘Stop playing that and play front row licks.' That's three words that I'll remember for the rest of my life. And he said, ‘Sing with that guitar. If you sing with that guitar, you will have girls in the front row. If you shred, you'll have guys in the front row.'"

"It was the best advice ever given to me," Lukather continues. "As you see on Instagram and TikTok, there are plenty of shredders. There are 8-year-old shredders that will out-shred anyone on this planet. But there are few guitar players that sing and play melodic solos. I think of David Gilmour, Neal Schon, my pop. These guys have melodic forces on the guitar that stood out amongst the shred. And so when Steve said that to me, it changed my life. That's the direction where I went for the rest of my playing."

The years that followed weren't always easy, however. He recorded an entire album with an early band, but they broke up before it ever came out due to behind-the-scenes drama. The bitter situation soured him on groups until he randomly came across singer Emmett Lee Stang's cover of "In Your Eyes" on Instagram. He sent him a DM, they got on the phone, and decided to try making music together. Around that time, he connected with Nic Collins on a trip to Miami. "We first met at a Phil Collins concert in 2018," says Lukather. "And when went out for dinner years later with his girlfriend Isabella, we were instant bros."

Lukather, Collins, and Stang dubbed themselves the Effect, and they released the singles "Toxic Envy," "Something Wrong," and "Unwanted" last year. When they started thinking about songs to cut for a full album, Lukather played Collins and Stang "It Could Have Been You." "They were like, ‘What is this?'" Lukather says. "Their reaction was the same as mine. That's what sparked the idea of redoing it. I thought it would be sacrilegious to try to touch the greatest hits of Journey. Leave that to the gems that they are. But I was like, ‘This could be something that we can make our own and be really cool.'"

They invited Perry over the hear a new version they worked up. Before they knew it, Perry was adding his own vocals. "They had reimagined it so beautifully that I just had to do my best to fall into what felt right for the track and what felt believable for where they took it," says Perry. "They had already stacked the parts that were there, and I added some embellishments and some inversional choices against their chord arrangements… All I did was follow the sketches of the backgrounds they already put in there. That's because Trev and Emmett are both great singers."

In Perry's mind, the finished version is vastly superior to the Journey original back in 1986. "It's not an easy thing to do," he says. "I was told a long time ago, if you can't beat the original, don't cover it. They not only beat it, they reimagined it. The inversions are different, but this is where the sensitivity reveals itself to me…they didn't go far enough away to where it wasn't complementary to the original power of the melody that I wrote. It was super complementary, but different. You can't know how difficult that is to do, but they did it."

Days after the song hits, the Effect are kicking off an American tour opening for Billy Idol. In the summer, they head to Europe for a series of headlines dates and festival gigs, including a spot at the Isle of Wight Festival. "We're going to close the show every night with ‘It Could Have Been You,'" says Lukather. "It'll give us a chance to jam out and really have this huge ending. It's also a great story, obviously, which I'm going to lay onto the crowd before we play it."

One song can be enough to keep a band in people’s hearts and minds for decades. And Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ is a prime example.

This song was released way back in 1981, but remains a classic of the rock genre, beloved by many — including countless fans born years after it first hit the charts. Don’t Stop Believin’ actually became the biggest-selling of all tracks released before the 21st century on iTunes in 2009, as proof of its immense staying power.

But there’s more to Journey than this unforgettable track.

The Best Journey Songs from a Career Spanning Decades

Journey has separated and reformed multiple times, but has enjoyed considerable success since the band first broke through in the early 1980s. By the time Don’t Stop Believin’ was released, the band had already released multiple albums, including Escape (from which this track was taken).

Escape was a huge hit, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 and garnering critical acclaim. It also included the track Open Arms, another of the best Journey songs. Don’t Stop Believin’ showcases some of the strongest Journey songs lyrics, with an inspirational sensibility that makes it one of the most upbeat rock songs ever released.

Other best Journey songs include Any Way You Want It, Lights, Wheel in the Sky, and Only the Young. They showcase some of the strongest Journey songs lyrics written so far.

During the band’s career, Journey has sold close to 50 million albums in the United States alone, and have had more than 19 top 40 singles in this country, with 25 gold and platinum albums. The Greatest Hits album, released in 1988, was RIAA Diamond Certified and believed to be the US’s sixth-highest-certified greatest hits album. It sells almost 500,000 units around the world each year, and has been rereleased on numerous occasions.

Overall, Journey is considered one of the top-selling bands in the history of music. The band was inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Enduring Power of the Best Journey Songs

As with most smash-hit rock bands, Journey songs lyrics can be heard in numerous films and television shows. For example, Don’t Stop Believin’ featured in the notorious final installment of the long-running Sopranos, as well as in hit musical series Glee. Post Malone announced his intention to move from hip-hop and pop to country some time ago—a shift that some have questioned. The chart-topper has only released a few tunes in the genre, but already he’s racking up hits in the field—including a new one this week.

“I’m Gonna Miss Her” debuts at No. 45 on this week’s Hot Country Songs chart. While that’s fairly low on the 50-spot tally, Malone actually claims the only new entrant on the ranking of the most-consumed country tracks in America this time around.

Malone earns his third career appearance on the Hot Country Songs chart this week. His latest does mark his lowest-charting so far, but these are still early days for the singer-songwriter when it comes to this new sonic chapter.

In 2023, Malone reached the Hot Country Songs chart for the first time as a featured artist. He joined the late Joe Diffie on a reworked take on the beloved musician’s “Pickup Man,” which spent one frame at No. 34.

Malone scored a big hit on the most competitive ranking of the biggest country tracks in the country just a month ago. He joined Beyoncé on her tune “Levi’s Jeans,” which was featured on her first country album, Cowboy Carter . The track peaked at No. 5 and has spent a month on the roster.

“I’m Gonna Miss Her” is a cover of Brad Paisley’s single of the same name. His version, which is titled “I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishing Song),” is one of that star’s 18 No. 1s on the Hot Country Songs tally. It peaked atop the ranking back in July of 2002.

Malone’s first proper country single as a lead artist is expected to arrive this Friday (May 10). “I Had Some Help” is a collaboration between the fledgling country musician and genre ruler Morgan Wallen. It may serve as the first taste of Malone’s forthcoming first country album, though so far, details about the in-process project are scarce.

As he arrives on the Hot Country Songs chart, Malone also claims the No. 1 single in America. He joined Taylor Swift on her latest smash “Fortnight,” which debuted atop the Hot 100 last frame. The tune holds in first place for a second stint this time around.
