The reviews speak for themselves. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us.

We had an amazing time

We cannot recommend our tour enough. We had an amazing time and have already told friends and family about it. Iceland is an amazing place and I am sure we will be back and will use Nordic Visitor again!

Experience of a lifetime

I primarily wanted to use Nordic Visitor as a resource for creating our 14-day trip itinerary, to help weed through what seemed to be an endless array of choices, and to help us to get the very most out of our time in Iceland. Yes, we could have pieced it together ourselves but I needed an advocate in Iceland, an advisor, and maybe a resource for us if issues were to arise. That piece of mind was important to my wife and me and I'm glad we chose them to frame our trip. It made it much easier to piece in the parts that were important to us to see and experience. That allowed us to just enjoy the trip and not get bogged down in the details of planning each and every moment.

There are so many things I could say about our experience, an experience of a lifetime and after posting snippets of our trip on social media I have found that several friends of mine want to know how we planned this trip. I told them the same thing I am saying here, save a little money if you want and plan it yourself or trust a reliable source like Nordic Visitor and let them give you the trip framework and essential advice. I would do it the same way if I were doing it over.

Went off without a hitch!

Everything was well-organised and went off without a hitch. The private guide was amazing. He could not have been better. I highly recommend him to anyone considering a private guide as an option. He's extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area. He knew all of the best places to go and was entertaining and delightful as well. Accommodation was all spectacular.

Warm and engaging guide

Great tour. The sights are of course amazing and the tour made the most of our time, weather and our interests/priorities. Driver and guide David managed all of these very well. He was also very knowledgeable and personally warm and engaging. Could not have asked for more.

Perfect for solo traveller

A beautiful itinerary, exceptional guide and perfect weather made this a trip I will never forget. Nordic Visitor made the process easy, and Iceland opened her arms. My 10-day small group tour was perfect for a solo traveller who wanted to see it all.

Working with Nordic Visitor was wonderful. Our travel consultant, Heddy, was quick to respond when we had a question or concern. She helped us plan a fabulous itinerary. Everything we booked through Nordic Visitor was fantastic. I have already recommended Nordic Visitor to friends, and I will continue to do so.

Trip of a lifetime

Overall this was an amazing experience! A trip of a lifetime that I could never have planned myself. Any questions I had during planning were answered faster than expected and I felt safe and well looked after during the trip. Trip was smooth and hassle free.

5-star experience

Not only did we absolutely love every stop on the Scenic South Iceland tour, but prior to the tour we stayed for 4 days in Reykjavík. I appreciated Nordic Visitor's recommendations for things to do and places to eat there and felt highly supported by Marko, our travel consultant, in every regard to booking our flight and own hotel, day trips I was interested in, and taking public transport around. A definite 5-star experience!

I will certainly travel with Nordic Visitor again!

I cannot thank Nordic Visitor enough for providing me with a wonderful and memorable once-in-a-lifetime experience. Everything was seamless, from the pickup at the airport, to the excellent hotels, delicious food served and our friendly, knowledgeable guide, Jakob. Nothing was too much trouble - we all thoroughly enjoyed our experience in Iceland, and all came away with wonderful memories of many of the amazing sights of such a scenic country. We were even lucky enough to see the northern lights. I will certainly travel with Nordic Visitor again and would recommend them to anyone thinking about visiting the countries where they offer tours. Thank you Nordic Visitor!

Many thanks to Nordic Visitor

Absolutely amazing. No issues whatsoever. We saw it all from North to South and much of in between. From reindeer to whales and more beautiful waterfalls and volcanic bits than you could hope to see in a week. Every hour the scenery seemed to change dramatically. Just a great experience. Many thanks to Nordic Visitor.

Best vacation we have had

Everyone at Nordic Visitor were very responsive to all questions we had during our 30-year anniversary trip to Iceland. We had airline travel issues and the representative adjusted our itinerary so we were able to see the whole island. The accommodation were beautiful and everyone was so friendly. This was the best vacation we have had, we left Iceland relaxed!

An amazing and unique experience

Our tour was great! Went for our honeymoon and it was everything we wanted. First night we got to see the northern lights which were fantastic! Second day, most certainly our longest, visited several sites (Geysire & Þingvellir) and went snowmobiling on a glacier. Such an amazing and unique experience. The walking tour around Reykjavik was surprisingly educational and our guide pointed out things that we ordinarily would have missed. The NYE dinner was delicious and going out to see the firework displays by (what seemed to be like) everyone was something. Practically had to dodge fireworks! Our 4th day was spent at the Blue Lagoon; perfect after a night of partying! Our last day was nice and relaxing, did some final shopping before we headed off to the airport. Hope to go back & visit Iceland again!

AWARD-WINNING EXPERIENCE

The 6-day Ring Road tour was awarded the best multi-day travel experience in Iceland by TourRadar, based on traveler reviews worldwide. We operate our tours in small groups to provide an authentic experience for every traveler. Our superb guides — the best in the country — go the extra mile to give you an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

This Iceland tour offers unforgettable experiences year-round. Here are some seasonal extras : from September to April,  you might see the Northern Lights; from October to April, explore the Crystal Ice Cave. In summer, enjoy the Arctic midnight sun and spot puffins. In September, there is sometimes a chance to see a countryside sheep round-up.

Day 1: Golden Circle & South Coast

people walking on a gravel path in Thingvellir National Park

We will start the day at 8:00 am by collecting all passengers from their pickup locations. (Collection can take up to 30 minutes, depending on your location.) We will head towards the country's interior and hit the famous tourist route called " the Golden Circle ."

Our first stop will be Thingvellir National Park , recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and geological importance. There, we will see the historical site where Althingi , the world’s oldest democratic parliament, was founded more than a thousand years ago.

There is no specific parliament building here as the people of Iceland used to hold their meetings here under the open sky. The “ Lögberg ” is a piece of rock and was the platform from where the law speakers would proclaim new laws with the imperious rift valley at their back.

Thingvellir is also famous for being the gap between two tectonic plates . There are several cracks between the Eurasian and North American plates lying at the center of the national park. These two plates continue to drift apart, with the gap widening by about 0.78 in. (2 cm) each year. This movement creates the awe-inspiring geology in the area that we will explore when we walk in between the tectonic plates.

Winter View Of Strokkur Geysir In Iceland Golden Circle

Our next stop is the world-renowned Geyser Hot Spring Area . We will walk among bubbling hot springs and mud pots on the restless ground of an active geothermal area, passing by steaming fumaroles surrounded by colorful minerals. We will see the famous “Geysir” from which the English word geyser was adopted and its younger brother, Strokkur. The Great Geysir is dormant today, but Strokkur erupts every 5-8 minutes, so we will be able to see at least a few eruptions, for sure! The unearthly scenery will surely inspire us to know Iceland’s geology even better.

Then, we will move on to the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Falls). Gullfoss was named after the golden-brown hue surrounding the cascade on sunny days. If we are lucky, a stunning rainbow will form over the canyon, providing a fantastic opportunity for photos.

Gullfoss, Thingvellir, and the Geyser Hot Spring Area are all things that everyone who visits Iceland should see, so you will be able to cross each one off your bucket list in one incredible day!

After leaving the Golden Circle route behind, we will head south. We will continue our journey by driving on the Ring Road . The South Coast is the other area that every visitor to Iceland wants to see. Iceland’s most dramatic scenery can be seen here. Every meter is exciting, and the landscape looks like the setting from a fairytale.

seljalandsfoss falls at sunset in iceland

We will stop at two of Iceland’s most epic waterfalls on our way to our accommodation: Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss . We will have time to explore these outstanding natural beauties. At Seljalandsfoss, we can walk behind the cascade (when it’s not frozen, of course). At Skógafoss, we can take the stairs and walk up to its top, from where we will admire the landscape.

We will visit the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach , where we can see the famous Reynisdrangar sea stacks and the dramatic black basalt columns. It was ranked among the top ten non-tropical beaches in the world.

From Reynisfjara, there is a beautiful view over the sea arches and rock cliffs at Dyrholaey. Puffins nest on the basalt columns during the summer. The volcanic beach of Reynisfjara certainly deserves its fame!

We will spend the night in a small country hotel near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur . Your accommodation provides a great setting for spotting the awe-inspiring Northern Lights from September to April under favorable conditions. In summer, you can soak in the Midnight Sun.

Day Highlights

  • Thingvellir National Park
  • Geysir Geothermal Area
  • Gullfoss Waterfall
  • Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss Waterfalls

On day 2, we move e ast and continue driving through breathtaking natural settings. We will pass by the legendary Mýrdalsjökull Glacier , which hides one of the most notorious volcanoes in all of Iceland beneath its ice - the mighty Katla.

The road continues across the Eldhraun lava field , a bumpy, mossy field stretching for many kilometers. This unearthly terrain was once a fierce lava flow from Iceland's most fatal volcanic eruption.

iceland 6 day tours

Soon , we will arrive at Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park . It is an oasis of luscious green birch forests and rich vegetation surrounded by the giant outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull. The natural wonders you will see here will take your breath away as you allow the wildly contrasting scenes to soak in.

Here, we will take a magical three-hour glacier hike up Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in all of Europe. One of our specialist glacier guides will guide this hike, ensuring that you are safe throughout the tour. Your guide will also be on hand to teach you more about this incredible outlet glacier and all the fantastic things that you will be able to see from it.

From October to April, we will replace the glacier hike to visit a naturally formed ice cave in the glacier's heart! Ice caves are natural phenomena that form in winter and collapse in spring, so anyone visiting an ice cave is extremely lucky!

Iceland Diamond Beach Sunny View

After our trip to the glacier, we will jump back on our bus to continue our adventure. For the last stop of the day, we will visit the spectacular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Jökulsarlon is the deepest lake in Iceland, filled with giant floating icebergs.

The lagoon is connected to the sea, so the icebergs float slowly toward the open ocean. Here, the waves push them back onto the shore, creating a genuinely mesmerizing natural wonder. The sapphire water laps up against coal-black sands, which are peppered with pearl white and blue icebergs, as well as ice rocks that look like precious stones. This coastline is called Diamond Beach . It is a supernatural sight that will send shivers down your spine!

In the evenin g, we will lay down our heads at a comfortable accommodation in the Southeast area . Ask your guide for tips to see the Northern Lights at night during winter!

Day 3: east fjords - djúpivogur - wilderness center.

iceland 6 day tours

On day three, we will explore the eastern fjords of Iceland . As we make our way along the coastline, we will drive by the Hvalnes Nature Reserve , a remote and beautiful peninsula with insanely impressive mountains. Eystrahorn , Stokksnes , and Vestrahorn are located here, also known as the "horny mountains." Surrounded by grassy black sand dunes, this place is more beautiful than you could ever imagine!

Our first stop of the day will be Djúpivogur , a traditional fishing village with centuries-old, colorful houses that will remind us of the village's long history of trading. Djúpivogur has a population of 450 people who all make their living out of the sea. The nature surrounding it is beautifully varied. A picturesque, pyramid-shaped mountain nearby and a stunning coastline make the views even more interesting.

We will drive the serpentine roads around the Eastfjords and marvel at the stunning landscapes. After leaving the coastal area behind, we will head towards the legendary Lagarfljót Lake , the third-largest lake in Iceland. It is famous for being home to Iceland's biggest monster, Lagarfljótsormurin . While the monster's existence might be just a legend, some locals genuinely believe in it.

For the rest of the day, we'll explore the Wilderness Center , a living history center located on the edge of Northern Europe's biggest wilderness. Access to the museum's exhibitions is complimentary during your stay.

Once you walk over the old wooden bridge, you're transported to the past. Everything at the Wilderness center is designed to make you feel part of life from long ago, from the buildings to the food and activities. You'll even stay in accommodations that feel like they belong in a museum, immersing you in the "Wilderness World" day and night.

After your exploration, unwind in the hot spring spa , built in an authentic style, featuring a traditional hot spring crafted from stones similar to those used by our ancestors.

If the weather's right, you might also see the Northern Lights from September to April.

Day 4: stuðlagil canyon - mývatn - goðafoss - akureyri.

iceland 6 day tours

On day four, we will head toward North Iceland. After leaving Egilsstaðir behind, we will drive through a Highlands area, where the landscape is barren and extraterrestrial. First, we will visit Stuðlagil Canyon , one of the world’s most enchanting basalt rock formations.*

After visiting Dettifoss, we will move towards the volcanic wonderworld around Lake Mývatn . Covering an area of 14 sq. mi. (36.5 km2), Mývatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland. An incredibly vibrant array of flora and fauna thrives around the lake and on its tiny islands. Myvatn is deservedly one of Iceland’s most valuable protected nature reserves.

During our visit to the region, we'll stop by the renowned Myvatn Nature Baths (optional extra), sometimes referred to as “the Blue Lagoon of the North.” Here, you can unwind in the blue geothermal water , sourced from depths of up to 2,500 meters and heated by underground volcanic activity. In addition to the bathing lagoon, you'll also find steam baths where steam rises from the floor, providing a 100% natural experience controlled by the weather.

Woman bathing in Myvatn natural baths

Afterward, we will go for a short hike in Dimmuborgir , “the Dark Fortress,” a charming garden of lava rock sculptures, huge rock pillars, caves, caverns, tunnels, and lava bridges. These strange lava formations are steeped in mythology. Our friendly tour guide will tell us all about Iceland’s thirteen Santas and the many trolls who live among these peculiar sculptures.

Near to the lake is one of Iceland’s most terrific geothermal fields, Námaskarð . The highly active volcanic terrain contains wildly bubbling hot springs and loud fumaroles surrounded by colorful mineral-painted soil. The air smells intensely of rotten eggs, which is the typical smell of sulfur. This smell can be unpleasant, but the sights will make you forget about the smell!

Our final stop of the day will be at the Goðafoss Waterfall . The “waterfall of the gods” was named when Iceland switched from the Norse religion to Christianity. According to the legends, this was the place where the pagan idols were destroyed when Iceland converted to Christianity.

The water cascades from a height of 39 ft. (12 m) over a length of 38 ft. (30 m) and has a unique horseshoe shape, making it highly photogenic.

iceland 6 day tours

After our memorable day, we'll make our way to Akureyri , the capital of North Iceland. Despite its small size, with fewer than 20,000 residents, Akureyri is the largest city outside the capital area. Nestled in the heart of Eyjafjörður Bay, this picturesque town boasts stunning views in all directions. In Akureyri, you'll find charming cafes, top-notch restaurants, captivating art galleries, and a vibrant atmosphere! It's no wonder why this delightful town was named the #1 best travel destination in Europe by Lonely Planet!

We will spend the night in a hotel in the Akureyri area, where you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights between September and April.

*In winter, road conditions may limit access to Stuðlagil. But don't worry. We'll have plenty of other thrilling activities lined up for you. Your safety and satisfaction are our main concerns. Thank you for your understanding.

Day 5: whale watching in dalvík - siglufjörður -tröllaskagi - laugarbakki.

Day five is dominated by Iceland’s incredible wildlife. The tiny fishing village of Dalvík offers nearly a 100% chance of seeing whales as they are abundant in this bay all year round! Humpbacks, minke whales, and dolphins are frequently spotted in Eyjafjörður , the “island fjord” bay.

Seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is an experience that will last you a lifetime. Whales often swim close to the boat, frolicking around and guaranteeing you will get a new perspective on the natural world. We may also see some unique bird species during the summer, including puffins and more.

Once we reach the shore, we will travel around the beautiful Trölskaggi peninsula and enjoy some of the best ocean scenery along the way. We will drive through picturesque small villages and thriving agricultural areas.

Our last stop of the day is Siglufjörður , a tiny village that was once the herring fishing capital of the North Atlantic Ocean. Continuing our scenic drive, we will drive around the peninsula and reenter Iceland’s epic Ring Road. Finally, we will head south and go to Laugarbakki , where you will spend the evening at the hotel.

Finally, we will head south and go to Laugarbakki , where you will spend the evening at the hotel.

Our day will begin with a short hike up to a highly scenic volcano crater, Gábrók . The red volcanic soil is covered with green moss patches, making it look like a vibrant painting. On a clear day, there are fabulous views over the lava field and the area.

The next stop is the bubbling Deildartunguhver hot spring . Europe's most powerful hot spring produces 50 gallons (180 liters) of water per second at a piping hot 97°C (200°F). All hot water in the towns and farms within a 60- to 70-kilometer radius is transferred from Deildartunguhver.

Our next stop will be the unique Lava Falls . The waterfalls of Hraunfossar are extraordinary as its countless creeks and cascades stream out of the ground. A waterfall without a river over it is quite a rare natural phenomenon! The water continues appearing from the ground for about 0.55 mi. (900 m). It is an extraordinary sight, making it one of the most beloved waterfalls of those who visit it.

Hraunfossar waterfall in Iceland view from above

A few minutes from Hraunfossar is another waterfall called Barnafoss or the “ Children’s Waterfall .” According to a sad rumor, errant children have perished in cyan blue water.

From here, we will travel to the historic and charming site of Reykholt . It was once the hometown of Snorri Sturluson, the Icelandic historian, lawyer, politician, poet, and author of many Icelandic sagas.

Snorri Sturluson is one of Iceland’s most famous people and lived here between the 12th and 13th centuries. His accounts of Nordic mythology are truly incredible and reading them will help you appreciate Iceland.

We will get to see Snorralaug , “Snorri’s pool,” an attractive geothermal hot pool you can dip your fingers in to feel the temperature of the water. The site is closed to bathers for its historical significance. The pool itself was built in the 10th century and may well be the oldest man-made structure in Iceland.

On our way back to the capital, we will drive by another scenic fjord, Hvalfjörður (the “Whale Fjord”). During World War II, the fjord was the base of the British and American navies.

Depending on the weather, we will arrive back in Reykjavík at around 5-6 pm. This trip is jammed full of exciting adventures, stunning wildlife, magnificent nature, inspiring history and culture. You will collect the memories you will never forget!

What is the main interest of booking a multi-day tour?

Our multi-day tours will give you a small group experience as they are operated in a mini-bus and you get a better connection with the guide. By booking a multi-day tour with us, you don’t need to have to worry about finding accommodation during the time of the tour as our multi-day tour includes accommodation which is often booked far in advance. You will get more opportunities to explore Iceland further and experience places that you would normally not be able to see on a one-day tour.

All of our tours are English guided so you will have English speaking licensed guide throughout the tour that will tell you everything about what you see along the way and knows where the best locations to stop by at to get the absolute best experience.

What kind of rooms are provided when booking the multi-day tour?

When booking your tour you are guaranteed accommodations at a friendly country hotel and/or guesthouse. All of the hotels we work with are of the same standard and offer nice rooms with beds and linen. The standard room is a twin room but it is possible to request a double room or a triple room, with no extra charge. The rooms come with private or shared bathrooms, depending on your booking. Free Wi-Fi, towels, a hairdryer, and a kettle are accessible at all of the hotels.

If I am traveling solo, is there a single supplement?

If you want to have your own room, then a single supplement is payable in order to secure a single room. If you do not wish to book a single room then you will be roomed with another traveler of the same gender.

Are meals included on the tour?

Breakfast is included at the hotel/guesthouse restaurant during the tour. Meals and beverages are not included on your tour. However, we will make stops at restaurants and conveniences stores where you are able to purchase all necessities. The average amount spent on food each day per person is 8,000 ISK (80$). Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are accepted at all restaurants and stores. A small amount of cash won't hurt though.

What meal options are available to me in the tour packages?

A typical breakfast buffet is included at all the hotels/guesthouses we stay at during the tour, allowing you to fuel up for the day on various slices of bread, toppings, cereal, fruits, and yogurt. Tea and coffee are also included, alongside a variety of additional tasty options.

Your guide will also find a good place for the group to eat lunch, where you can find a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone. The dinner is usually at the hotels/guesthouses we stay at for the night. We will make stops at restaurants and convenience stores where you will be able to purchase all necessities.

The average amount spent on food each day per person is 8,000 ISK (80$). Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are accepted at all restaurants and stores. A small amount of cash won't hurt, though.

What is the luggage allowance on a multi-day tour?

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you are traveling with extra bags or heavier luggage, you will need to book suitable storage before you arrive ; this will incur a small fee. There is the option to add luggage storage in Reykjavík during the booking process of your order in the extras section.

* The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in).

Would a multi-day tour suit me?

We welcome all participants of all ages older than the listed minimum age for each tour. Our average group usually consists of participants between the ages of 22 to 55 years. However, we have people of all ages, ranging from 8 to 99 years, joining our multi-day tours. We get a lot of solo travelers joining us, as well as families and friends.

If you find yourself having difficulties participating in any of the activities included in the tour, for example, a glacier activity, then you are more than welcome to skip it. Iceland is surrounded by beautiful scenery so you can explore your surroundings in the meantime r wait elsewhere while others do the activity. Our guide should be able to drop you off at a nearby place where there are some services available if requested.

What is the average driving per day?

The average is around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You’ll spend approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. Stops are of course, made at multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks, lunch stops , etc.

Do you offer gear rental for multi-day tours?

We do offer some necessary items for rent. For most of our multi-day tours, we rent out waterproof jackets and pants as well as hiking shoes. These items are available to book under the selection “Extras’’ in the booking widget when booking your tour on our website. If you have already booked the tour and wish to add some rental gear to your booking, you can do that at least 24 hours before your tour starts, via our Customer Portal .

Are Northern Lights guaranteed to be seen on multi-day tours?

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore we can unfortunately never promise that they will be seen on your tour. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions. The best time to see the lights is between September - March when it’s a dark and clear sky. The sky needs to be as dark as possible, so the best places to see them are well away from the city lights.

Most of the hotels on our tours are remotely located and, therefore, ideal for spotting the northern lights. If the forecast is in our favor, then it is very likely that you will be able to see the northern lights. Most of the hotels offer a Northern Lights wake-up call upon request if lights are spotted, so it is more likely that you will see the lights on a multi-day tour!

Is it possible to arrive in Iceland on the same date as we booked our tour?

We always highly recommend booking a multi-day tour starting at least one day after arriving in Iceland. If you’re flying in from the US or will be landing early (4-6:30) you should be able to join the tour, but be aware that some risks could follow such as flight gets delayed and could, therefore, miss out on the tour.

This all-encompassing six-day tour takes you to every region in Iceland on the  Ring Road  and deep into the heart of West Iceland, too, starting with an adventure on the South Coast with its stunning waterfalls and black sand beaches, plus an option to hike your way across a glacier.

The second day takes us to the glittering  iceberg lagoon at Jokulsarlon , where you will have the chance to take a boat trip around the icebergs or go ice-caving beneath the glacier. From there, we will whisk you through the peaceful landscapes of the  Eastfjords  with stops at Vestrahorn, the old fishing of Djupivogur, and, in summer, the breathtaking Studlagil Canyon before an overnight stay in Egilsstadir.

The third day brings us to  Myvatn,  an area well-known for active geothermal hotspots and magical places such as Grjotagja and Dimmuborgir, with an opportunity to soak the day away in the Green Lagoon. You’ll also see the  majestic waterfalls of Dettifoss, Selfoss and Godafoss .

The fourth day starts from Akureyri where your optional whale watching boat tour sails from. A short detour away from the Ring Road will later bring us to the Vatnes peninsula, where the dragon-shaped sea stack Hvitserkur  and the beautiful  Kolugljufur canyon  will be seen.

The fifth day will see us in  West Iceland taking in the weird and wonderful lava field waterfalls of Hraunfossar, the piping hot springs of Deildartunguhver and inside the biggest lava cave in Iceland.

On the final day of this special six-day tour,  you’ll have the choice of a circuit of the Golden Circle, or a day exploring the Snaefellsnes peninsula. The maximum size of the group on this tour is 19, offering you a pleasant and carefree way to discover the country. Your night-time accommodation is included, so all you have to do is sit back and relish the experience. We’ll also give you all you need to know about the optional experiences that you can enjoy on the journey, including glacier hikes, whale watching, visits to an ice cave, lagoon boat tours, and soothing spa experiences.

Day 1 | The South Coast of Iceland

Iceland South Coast Map

For the first stage of this six-day journey, you will be transported from Reykjavik to the South Coast over a highland pass across a lava plateau dotted with superheated steam vents rising into the air.

Splendid views of the wide coastal plain can be seen as we sweep downhill past the geothermal greenhouses of Hveragerdi along the way, heading towards some of the most beautiful sights the country has to offer.

As we progress along the Ring Road, the land rises again up into enormous mountains and glaciers on the right, with the Atlantic coast on the left. Soon, the world-famous volcano Eyjafjallajokull starts to appear in the distance. This is our first stop, where you will see the splendid waterfall of Seljalandsfoss as it cascades 60 meters down into a blue-green river.

We’ll also take you to the “Hidden Waterfall” of Gljufrabui, just a few minutes away but rarely seen by most Ring Road travelers, as it is concealed behind a secluded rockface.

This section of Route 1 can often be very windy indeed, and the smaller waterfalls might be blown aside or even back up into the air! A few minutes further along, you will soon see the superb Skogafoss waterfall, easily spotted even before we turn off the Ring Road. Glacial waters gracefully fall 60 meters into the Skoga river, where the eternal spray sparks uncounted rainbows on sunny days. You can also ascend a 500-step path to the top and see the views from there too. The next stop on the first day is the dramatic black sand beach at Reynisfjara, offering views of the superb stone sea arches of Dyrholaey in the distance, the fascinating basalt columns fastened to the cliff-face and the other-worldly Reynisdrangar, the volcanic rock towers that lurk just offshore.

Powerful Atlantic waves storm ashore here, crashing their way up the beach and often catching out the unwary with their speed – take care when walking along the volcanic sands here.

Optional Activity

Minimum age 8 – put the crampons on and enjoy the magnificent, raw views around you. Under care of an experienced, skilled and qualified glacier guide you will discover mind-blowing places, astonishing crevasses and unique ice formations. It is necessary to wear solid hiking shoes and highly recommend wearing warm, windproof jackets. That is basically all you need to bring – we provide the crampons and all necessary equipment to walk safely on glacier. This activity takes approximately 3 hours.

OVERNIGHT STAY ON THE COUNTRYSIDE

You will stay in a cozy country hotel located just few kilometres away from the Glacier Lagoon

Overnight stay in Suðursveit

Day 2 | Adventure in the East

iceland 6 day tours

This day starts with visit at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon – world famous glacial lake filled with floating ice bergs falling from the biggest glacier in Europe – Vatnajökull. Some of them are being washed back ashore and dazzling in contrast to the black sand beach called Diamond Beach – nearly as famous as the lagoon itself. This area is also known for reach wildlife, including grey and harbour seals swimming in ice-cold waters or resting on the shore.

Then it is on to mountain Vestrahorn (which is one of the best spots for photos in Iceland) and continue along the dramatic east coast boasts long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks which contrast with inland fertile farmlands. Natural harbors mean picture-postcard fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful sweeping views with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. One of the visited settlements is Djupivogur, located in Berufjordur – long and narrow fjord rich in birdlife. This charming fishing village had a long trading history dating back to 16th century. In present days, local harbour serves only fishermen, but you can still catch the spirit of this place while talking a short walk around the port buildings – including Langabud, old trading station build in 1790.

Optional Activities

Take a thrilling 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the floating icebergs. It’s your chance to get up close to these glittering giants as the bergs sway around the lagoon.

You’ll jump on an open-top 4WD vehicle and slide into the glacial waters for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with these magical mountains of ice. Wrap up warm and look out for seals!

Day 3 | Lake Myvatn and Waterfalls

iceland 6 day tours

The third day sees the tour turn north through moon-like landscapes and into the beautiful lake region of Myvatn, famous for its fascinating lava formations, flat-topped mountains, and a wealth of flora and fauna.

We start the day by giving a visit at Studlagil Canyon – the hidden gem of Iceland. Turquoise waters originating in Vatnajokull glacier run between the biggest formation made of basalt columns in the whole country, that you can admire once taking just a short walk from the parking lot.

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, nearly 50 meters high and a hundred meters wide, producing plumes of spray that are visible from some distance away. Before jumping back on the bus, we will take you on the short hike to admire another waterfall called Selfoss.

Myvatn is the fourth largest lake in the country, lying across the Mid Atlantic Ridge with geothermal features bubbling away alongside dormant volcanoes.

For Game of Thrones fans, the Grjotagja geothermal cave will be a highlight. In contrast, the dramatic lava fields of Dimmuborgir, with its easy walks, will intrigue others. Nearby is Hverir, a geological marvel where you can walk numerous paths between sulfurous and colorful hot-pots.

Glorious Godafoss is not the biggest waterfall in the country, but it is very significant as the place where pagan symbols were forever discarded, thrown into the Skjalfandafljot river when Iceland became a Christian nation.

This region provides visitors with splendid views and ever-changing landscapes, from green fjordside pasturelands to dark, brooding lava fields, bright blue lakes and rivers, snow-capped peaks, and boiling mud pots.

The spa’s serene setting amidst birch and pine trees makes it truly exceptional.

The Forest Lagoon boasts two pools, with the large pool spanning 530m2 and maintained at a soothing temperature of around 37°C (98.6F), dry sauna & cold pool.

OVERNIGHT STAY IN AKUREYRI

The Capital of North Iceland

Akureyri Downtown

Day 4 | North Iceland – region famous for reach wildlife

iceland 6 day tours

Last day starts from Akureyri – the capital of the North. This small, remote city is located in a stunning, deep fjord. The city center is located next to the harbor, where one will find both modern architecture, historical wooden houses and Akureyri church located on the hill serving as a viewing point at the same time. The day continues by going South towards Varmahlid village, where charming turf church is located. While driving through the North Coast you will easily realize how each region of Iceland differs from another – but still each one can amaze you equally. In the North we will be visiting the rock Hvítserkur which is a unique formation and a great place for photos,  and Kolugljufur Canyon with spectacular waterfall.

If spotting whales from the distance is not enough for you then you should secure your spot on this activity.

The whale watching tour takes around 3 hours and the chances to see the huge mammals playing in the sea are very positive in this area of Iceland.

OVERNIGHT STAY IN BORGARNES

The Capital of West Iceland

Borgarnes

Day 5 | The Silver Circle with Lava Caving

Silver Circle Location

Today you will explore the Borgarfjordur (Silver Circle) area where you will see the most powerful hot spring in Europe – Deildartunguhver, charming Glanni Waterfall and great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 m (almost 300 ft!) across the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which flows from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá River from ledges created by less porous rock in the lava.

Literally a stone’s throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in a previous century. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall, and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-stricken mother had the bridge destroyed.

The highlight of the day is a visit to the Lava Cave at Viðgelmir  – just shy of 1600 meters the cave features amazing colors and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth. During this 1,5 hour long expedition you will have a chance to see one of the largest lava caves in Iceland with its stunning lava stalactites and stalagmites. The area surrounding the entrance to the cave will allow you to realize how powerful eruptions of volcano can be.

You will also stop at Husafell – magical place to unwind after a day of wonder, with birch tree woodlands, waterfalls, rugged lava fields, crystal-clear water springs, medieval remains and much more to see.

Day 6 | Snæfellsnes National Park

map-sneafellsnes

The final day of this epic tour of Iceland brings us to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often described as “Iceland in Miniature”, you’ll discover golden beaches, crunchy lava fields, stunning waterfalls, and magical mountains.

The name translates as “Snow Mountain Peninsula”, and the enormous stratovolcano Snæfellsjökull dominates the sky wherever you look.

As we make our way around the peninsula, you’ll visit Kirkjufell, one of the most photographed peaks in the country, featured in “Game of Thrones”. The name means “Church Mountain”, and its triangular shape will amaze you!

The peninsula is unusual for its golden sand beaches, like Djupalonssandur. You’ll find some traditional “lifting stones”, which were used to test the strength of the local fishermen! Nearby stand the towering twin basalt cliff pinnacles at Lóndrangar, where thousands of seabirds make their homes in the summer. There’s a seal colony at Ytri-Tunga, and we’ll make a stop to see these cute creatures if the weather conditions are favourable. Then it’s a short drive back to the capital, so you can sit back and enjoy the magical memories you’ve made on the best road trip in the world!

You can also find answers to FAQ below

When you complete your booking, you’ll be asked to choose a pick up and drop off location. Where possible, we will collect you directly from your hotel .

Some parts of the city have traffic restrictions, so you’ll need to go to a designated bus stop for collection instead if your hotel is in that area.

This link will tell you which bus stop is closest to your accommodation.

There’s a 30-minute window for collection while we pick up other passengers from their locations.

At the end of your tour, you’ll be dropped off at the same place unless you choose to get off at another stop instead – that’s your choice! Drop off can also take up to 30 minutes.

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so you’ll need to prepare appropriately, whatever the time of year for your tour.

That means choosing the right clothes (light layers), shoes (sturdy and waterproof) and coats (windproof & waterproof). And not wearing jeans, just in case it rains!

We’ve prepared a detailed guide for you to read, full of tips and tricks to help you know what to wear, what to bring and what to leave behind!

If you’re booking a multi-day tour of up to three days, the maximum “carry-on” bag size is 22 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm or 22 x 18 x 10 inches)

If your multi-day tour is longer than three days, then your ticket includes “carry-on” (see above) and 24 inch “checked” baggage sized no bigger than 60 x 41 x 23 cm (24 x 16.4 x 9.2 inches)

For shorter tours, you can choose to add “checked” baggage for an additional fee during the booking process.

If you want to guarantee bringing a larger bag on a shorter tour, it is best to book in advance. Oversized luggages can not be taken on board but need to be stored prior the tour at either our office or at one of the public luggage lockers dotted across Reykjavík ( CHECK LOCATIONS & PRICES ).

If you wish to store your luggage at our office please contact us by email at [email protected]

At Nicetravel, we choose our overnight accommodations with care to make the best use of your time in Iceland, with reasonable drive times between stops.

You’ll enjoy a private room with en suite bathroom facilities and breakfast, WiFi, towels and, in most cases, a kettle for a morning brew.

Outside the capital, most Icelandic hotels are comfortable and unfussy, with friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff.

Enjoy the scenery while relaxing at the end of each day!

Hotel rooms are sold based on two adults sharing, so single-room occupancy is more expensive as a result.

If you are a solo traveler, we will not assign you a room with a stranger, so the single supplement fee becomes applicable.

If you are two people traveling together and staying in the same room but paying separately, the single supplement fee is not applicable.

Simply add the name of your travel companion in the “special requirements” section when completing your booking.

For couples or groups traveling together, rooms will be assigned according to the number of people who have booked together.

Depending on availability at each location, you may request twin beds if that is your preference.

Larger groups will be accommodated in combinations of triple, double and twin rooms – three people in a triple room, four people in two doubles or twin rooms, five people in one triple and one double, and so on.

If a person in your group would prefer a single room, you must select “single supplement fee” for them when booking.

Solo travelers must pay a single supplement fee in all instances.

Breakfast is included at each overnight location, featuring bread and butter, preserves, boiled eggs, cooked meats, fruits, yoghurts, tea, and coffee.

All other meals are at your own expense.

As the tour continues around the country, you can grab lunch and dinner at each of the scheduled stops, and we’ll offer recommendations if you want them!

Yes. We monitor the weather and road conditions on the tour route to maximize your chance to see Iceland’s attractions at their best.

That means we may change the order or timing of the stops to take advantage of the weather (avoiding rain or snow showers where possible) and “ golden hour” photo opportunities .

If we receive a weather alert from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or roads are closed by the local authorities, we must cancel tours for your safety.

Iceland’s weather is very changeable, meaning changes may occur quickly. If we have to cancel tours, we will send you an email notification immediately .

So please check your email inbox before heading out to the collection point, particularly if the weather looks bad in the city.

Sometimes the weather is worse outside the city, or vice versa!

On average, we will cover 200-300 kilometers each day, with four to five hours of driving.

We schedule our tours as evenly as possible, with driving distances between each stop varying from 45 minutes to a couple of hours.

You’ll have around 30 to 60 minutes to explore each location, with most attractions just a short walk from the parking lot.

As with everything in Iceland, the precise timings of the tour will depend on weather and road conditions on the day, as our priority is to keep you safe while exploring Iceland.

If you want to bring small children on our tours, we will provide booster seats to ensure their safety and comfort.

Important: bringing children younger than the minimum age stated for each trip is not permitted; please check carefully before submitting your booking.

Please contact us by email ( [email protected] ) at least 12 hours in advance, with the subject line “Booster seat + your booking reference number”.

After the final stop on the tour, we will return to the city. There is no specific time or drop off location – this can differ from the pick up spot.

You’re free to ask the guide to drop you off in the city center, or back at your collection point, whichever is the most convenient for your evening plans.

You can expect to be dropped off within 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the tour.

All our scheduled group tours are guided in English. Though it is possible to book a private tour guided in other languages. We will try to accommodate your request the best we can!

Lava Formations

Explore Iceland’s astonishing lava formations on our tours

On our tours of Iceland, you’ll see an ever-changing country packed with breathtaking geological marvels, including beautiful basalt columns, jagged pinnacles, and jet-black lava flows. Home to some of the fiercest volcanoes ever known, more than a third of the world’s recorded lava since the Middle Ages has poured across Iceland! On our Ring Road and South Coast tours , you’ll see how lava has shaped the country into what it is today, where more than 30 active volcano systems have created astonishing sights like Stuðlagil Canyon , the Eldhraun lava field, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara .

See the “Arch with a Hole” summer home to Puffins

Offering some of the best views on the South Coast, Dyrhólaey (Door Hill Island) is a spectacular promontory rising more than a hundred meters high above the Atlantic. Close to the most southerly point in Iceland, fierce waves pound the shores below. You’ll enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of towering stone arches, gleaming glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara . If you look closely, you’ll see the Reynisdrangar too!  In the summer, thousands of puffins and other seabirds flock here, so it’s an excellent spot for bird watching!

Blue Lagoon

Take a dip at Iceland’s famous Geothermal SPA

Experience a spa day like no other with a trip to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon . This geothermal paradise guarantees relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring. Some of our Golden Circle & Ring Road tours include an option to visit here, where you can lie back in the warming waters, admire the astonishing views of the jet-black lava fields, exfoliate, and enjoy a drink at the swim-up bar. Close to the airport and the city, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to sample the best of Iceland’s famous hot pots, where the mineral-rich healing waters will send you to heaven!

Whale Watching

Enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour in Iceland!

With more than twenty types of whales visiting Iceland every year, it’s one of the best places in the world to take a whale watching tour. When we visit Akureyri in North Iceland on our Ring Road tours , get ready to spot humpbacks, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and porpoise s . If you’re lucky, you might see a Blue whale, the most enormous creature ever known! Whales and other cetaceans come to Iceland to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and some stay all year round now. Imagine the joy of seeing whales and dolphins in the wild – you can do that when you visit Iceland!

Explore the land of ten thousand waterfalls on our tours!

Iceland is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, so that means there’s a lot of crystal-clear meltwater tumbling over cliffs and rushing to the sea. Some say there are over 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, and you’ll see some of the most famous falls on our Golden Circle , South Coast , and Ring Road tours . There are hidden waterfalls, multi-tiered falls, widescreen cascades where rainbows dance on sunny days, and even waterfalls where you can walk behind the waters! We’ll show you some of the best fosses in Iceland – and they’re all easy to reach too!

Volcanic Craters

See Iceland’s spectacular volcanic craters on our tours!

Iceland is less than 20 million years old, created by underwater volcanoes rising up along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a pipeline of molten magma straight from the Earth’s burning core. Dozens of volcanoes dot the country, and many are still active, which means you can explore fascinating volcanic formations at different geological stages! On our Golden Circle tours, you’ll see the multicolored crater at Kerið. Grábrok Craters are included in itineraries for our Westfjords Tours . There are countless more craters to be seen on our Ring Road and Silver Circle tours!

Seal Watching

Go seal spotting while you’re on tour in Iceland!

Iceland is a haven for several seal species, with little colonies of these captivating creatures dotted around the country. On our South Coast & Glacier Lagoon and Ring Road tours , you’ll have a chance to spot them at Jökulsárlón, where seals are often seen basking on the floating icebergs. Iceland’s coastline features golden sandy beaches where Harbor and Gray seals make their home, including Ytri-Tunga , a stop on our  Snaefellsnes tour in West Iceland.

Notably the highest chances to see them is when taking one of Westfjords Tours . It’s your best chance to see these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat!

River Rafting

Take a ride on a thrilling river rafting tour experience!

Iceland’s fast-flowing glacial rivers offer you a fantastic adventure experience when you join one of our adrenaline-pumping river rafting tours. Jump on sturdy rafts not far from Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden Circle , and paddle through the twisting turns of the Brúarhlöð volcanic rock canyon on the White River! Soak up the stunning scenery as you float downstream, safe in the hands of expert guides, with all the equipment you’ll need provided. It’s one of the most exciting adventure activities you can take in Iceland!

Northern Lights

Want to see the Northern Lights? Then book an Multi-Day Tour during winter time!

Seeing a display of the magical Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience, and Iceland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to witness this colorful cosmic spectacle. Clear, dark skies are needed to see the Northern Lights at their best, far away from streetlights. So when you book a winter multi-day tour , you’ll have the best chance to see the Northern Lights when you stay overnight in the remote Icelandic countryside. The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Golden Circle

See Iceland’s most famous sights

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Stand back as a geyser erupts at Haukadalur Geothermal Area every few minutes and admire the view at Gullfoss, a tremendous two-tiered waterfall fed by glacial meltwater.

Explore Iceland’s unique ice caves on our exciting tours!

More than a tenth of Iceland is covered by glaciers, making it the perfect place to get a close look at these astonishing frozen wonders. On our South Coast tours , you can opt for an unforgettable Ice Cave experience at Vatnajökull . Iceland’s glaciers are constantly changing, so your ice cave trip will be unique – nobody else will see the same sight again! Strap on some crampons and discover fascinating ice formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, and spectacular blue ice caves, safe in the hands of our experienced glacier guides. Tours operate between late October to April.

Hot Spring Bathing

Take a dip in Iceland’s famous geothermal spas on our tours

Enjoying a dip in a geothermal hot spring spa or pool is a daily ritual for Icelanders, like going to a coffee shop or a bar. There are dozens of natural hot spring spas, swimming pools, and outdoor hot pots all over the country, waiting for you to jump in and relax! Our Golden Circle tours include options to visit the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, while our Silver Circle tours include an authentic stone-walled hot pot in a remote canyon! Our Ring Road tours also feature several geothermal swimming pools around the country, where the locals love to relax too.

Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers

Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.

Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

Bolafjall Sky Walk

Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!

Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.

In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.

The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs.

Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Þingvellir National Park

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .

South Coast

See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast

Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Seljalandsfoss behind

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

6 day iceland itinerary

As you plot your 6-day itinerary of Iceland, don't be fooled by the country's frosty moniker. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland is surprisingly temperate. Winter sees temperatures below freezing, while summer stays cool around 10-15°C (50-59°F). Remember, if you dislike the weather, just wait a bit; it's infamously unpredictable, with rain, snow, sun, and wind all possible in one day. And let's not overlook the magical Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer.

Delve into Iceland's vibrant culture during your 6 days in Iceland tour. This island is renowned for its rich history, arts, and folklore rooted in Norse traditions. With globally recognized sagas, a high literacy rate, an impressive number of authors per capita , and celebrated music artists like Björk, Iceland's culture is truly captivating.

Things to Know Before You Go

Before you zip up your suitcase and embark on your Iceland itinerary for 6 days, here are some insider tidbits to make your trip smoother:

  • Currency: Iceland uses the Icelandic króna (ISK). Credit cards are widely accepted, even in remote areas.
  • Language : Icelandic is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas.
  • Tipping : Tipping in Iceland is not customary! Service charges are included in bills.
  • Plugs : They use the Europlug (Type C & F), so pack an adapter if you're coming from elsewhere.
  • Water : Tap water is pure and safe to drink. No need for bottled water here!

When to Visit Iceland

Choosing the perfect time for your 6-day Iceland itinerary can be like picking the perfect pair of socks - it can make or break the experience! So, before you pack your woolly socks, let's tune into the rhythm of Iceland's seasons to determine the best time to visit Iceland .

Winter trip to Iceland

Best Time of Year To Visit

A 6-day trip to Iceland can be a mesmerizing experience year-round, but timing can enhance your adventure further. Let's prod Mother Nature a bit to find out when she's at her best in Iceland:

  • Summer (June to August): These months bring out Iceland's true colors, offering long daylight hours (up to 24 during the Summer Solstice) and access to F-roads that are otherwise impassable. It's an ideal time for hiking and wildlife spotting.
  • Winter (December to February): If witnessing the Northern Lights is high on your bucket list, winter is your golden ticket. Be ready for shorter days and icy roads, though. Puffin sightings? Count them out in winter.
  • Spring and Autumn (March to May & September to November): These shoulder months offer a balance of moderate weather, fewer tourists, and reasonable prices. It's a good compromise for a 6-day trip to Iceland, although the weather can be unpredictable.

Things To Pack for Different Seasons

Packing for a 6-day tour of Iceland can feel like preparing for a trip to Narnia, thanks to Iceland's diverse weather conditions. Here are some essential items you'll need for each season:

  • Summer: Don't be deceived by the word ' summer '; temperatures still average around 10-13°C (50-55°F). Light, layer-able clothing, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots are must-haves.
  • Winter: This season calls for maximum insulation. Pack thermal clothing, a heavy winter jacket, gloves, and a hat. Don't forget a good pair of waterproof boots for those snowy escapades.
  • Spring/Autumn: These transitional seasons require a mix of summer and winter wear. Always pack layers and rainproof gear. After all, Icelandic weather is as unpredictable as a plot twist in a thriller!

The Ultimate Ring Road Road Trip: A 6 Day Iceland Itinerary

By: Author Christine Wheeler

Posted on Published: August 22, 2018  - Last updated: August 1, 2021

Iceland recently exploded onto the travel scene. Each year, more and more people visit the Land of Fire and Ice. If you haven’t been to Iceland yet, a Ring Road road trip in Iceland should be on your bucket list .

Some choose to go in the winter to see the Northern Lights. Others choose to go in the summer and experience the midnight sun. Either way, you can’t choose wrong when going to Iceland.

This six day Iceland itinerary can be tweaked if you have more or less time in Iceland. If you only have 3 or 4 days in Iceland, focus on the southern coast of Iceland found in the first 3 days of this itinerary for Iceland. You can fill one week in Iceland with this itinerary or even add a couple of other stops.

I really wish we had 7 days in Iceland as it would have given us just a little more time for a couple of other stops we wanted to make. If you have 10 days in Iceland or more, definitely drive around Ring Road and take time for some additional waterfalls and adventures along the way.

If you are planning a trip to Iceland, start saving now though. Iceland is expensive! From $7 a gallon fuel prices to $30 fast food meals for two, prepare for some outrageous prices on your Ring Road adventure. Prices are included to help you budget for your trip.

Map For a 6 Day Iceland Itinerary Around Ring Road

This map includes hotels we stayed in along the way and is split up by day. You can view all the layers to see the entire road trip around Iceland at once or view each individual day. Feel free to save it to your Google maps and alter it for your own Iceland road trip adventure.

Best Hotels for 6 Day Ring Road Iceland Road Trip

These hotels are also included below, but our recommendations for hotels on Iceland’s Ring Road are:

  • Hotel Gullfoss : This hotel sits right on Iceland’s Golden Circle. Located just a few minutes from Gullfoss waterfall, rooms go for about $150 a night and include a full breakfast buffet.
  • Solheimahjaleiga Guesthouse : This hotel makes for the perfect base to hike to the Solheimsandur plane wreck. It also is perfect for seeing puffins in Dyrholaey and seeing the basalt columns on Reynifsjara Beach. The rooms are individual rooms, but you share bathrooms here. It cost us $130 for one night. There was never a wait for a bathroom or shower. The included breakfast includes a full buffet breakfast.
  • Berunes HI Hostel & Camp : Our cabin at this hostel might be my favorite stay of the trip. The scenery in this area is the prettiest in Iceland, and we had our own little cabin in the middle of it. The cabin costs a little more than the room, but it is only a $20 difference ($130 versus $110). Plan to get breakfast elsewhere as it is not available here.
  • Icelandair Hotel Akureyri : We did not choose this hotel, but it was the nicest hotel of our Iceland road trip. Our car broke down, so the tow truck dropped us off here without a choice. They did not reimburse us either. The hotels in Akureyri cost more than other parts of Iceland, and this one cost $200 for one night. Breakfast costs another $30 per person, so we visited a bakery instead. The rooms are large and beautiful, but we usually try to keep our costs down and find hotels that include breakfast.
  • Hotel Lotus : Reykjavik has a wider range of hotel rooms than other parts of Iceland. This hotel is centrally located for what we wanted to see. We only had a few hours here due to our flights and wanting to see as much as possible with the midnight sun. Rooms start around $100, and a buffet breakfast is included. The rooms feel larger than they are and are very comfortable.

Day 1: Iceland’s Golden Circle in One Day

Our flight from New York City to Reykjavik was scheduled to land at 7 a.m., but a delay meant we landed closer to 9 a.m. We had already rented a car, so we went straight to the bus to go pick up our rental. Thankfully, visiting Iceland in summer meant the midnight sun gave us extra time to explore. We often stayed out most of the night to see places without anyone else around. Arriving late ended up not holding us back at all.

RENTING A CAR AND DRIVING IN ICELAND

We rented from Reykjavik Rental Car and would not recommend them. The customer service from the owner himself was terrible when our car broke down. He planned to leave us stranded all night on the side of the road. Our car would not turn on, so we could not use the heat to stay warm. After a few phone calls, he decided to send a tow truck to take us to a hotel for the night instead.

Once we had the car, we drove towards Reykjavik and stopped at a bakery we found along the way. We purchased some pastries to hold us over until we found some “real” food. Buying a couple of croissants, a sandwich, and a pastry set us back about $15 which wasn’t bad. We also stopped at an outdoor store and bought a sleeping bag and pillows. We rented a 4-wheel drive SUV so that we could sleep in the back if needed.

You definitely want to rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle for your Iceland road trip. Several roads we took were 4-wheel drive only roads. Some of the other roads did not require a 4-wheel drive vehicle, but 2-wheel drive vehicles struggled to make the trip.

Make sure to rent WiFi or a GPS as well. We rented WiFi and used the maps on our phones. This option was cheap and also allowed us to look up things as we went. Be aware that even the WiFi will not have service in some places. Make sure your map is loaded before you lose service, especially in the northern parts of the country.

When getting gas in Iceland, you have a few options. If a gas station is open, you can go inside and pay with a credit card or buy a gas card. At the pumps, you must pay with a card with a pin number or a gas station card. If you only have a credit card, call before you leave to get a pin number for your card.

Otherwise, take a debit or bank card with you. We also purchased a gas card. It could only be used at certain gas stations, but it made it easy to pay even when the gas station closed. Gas stations close early and do not stay open 24 hours a day like in some countries, so make sure you are ready.

Make sure to fill up your gas tank often. We tried to keep the gas tank over half full. Sometimes you drive long stretches of Ring Road without seeing any gas stations or other stops. You do not want to run out of gas in the middle of nowhere with no phone service or WiFi. The gas is expensive, but make sure to fill up often!

A QUICK STOP IN THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK

From there, it was time to head out to the Golden Circle. We didn’t make it far before we needed a quick nap though. We found a campground on the side of the road and pulled in. Campgrounds are everywhere in southern Iceland. The owner was very friendly and showed us around before letting us sleep for an hour or two in the car.

It had an indoor bathroom and a covered eating area, but the cooking area was outdoors. It was only $15 for the night, but camping isn’t necessarily the cheaper route since camper vans ran about $300 a day when we were there (our rental was about $100 a day). If you want to tent camp, it is much cheaper than a camper van or hotels. It is cold at night even in the summer though.

Awake and refreshed, we headed for Thingvellir to see the continental divide. The drive from the airport to Thingvellir without stopping takes about an hour and 15 minutes. This national park has amazing views, so don’t be afraid to use the lookouts to enjoy the views.

We started at the Thingvellir Visitor Center (at the end of Hakid Road) where you can walk between the continents. Being there in the middle of the day in June meant quite a few tour groups in this area with us though.

From this parking lot, you can walk down the path to the other places we saw in Thingvellir. If you have your own car, driving down to the parking lot near Oxararfoss is also an option to see the waterfall that runs down the divide. There is a viewing platform where you can look down the river and across at the waterfall.

Oxararfoss waterfall in Thingvellir National Park. Check out our perfect 6 day itinerary for Ring Road in Iceland!

You can walk or drive from Oxararfoss over to see the Silfra dive site. Here you can dive between the two continents in water that is at near freezing temperatures all year. I am a wimp when it comes to the cold and have an autoimmune disorder that makes my hands hurt in the cold, so this was not appealing at all to me!

We did walk over and touch the water. You can see how crystal clear it is from the walkways along the divide. We also sent our drone up to really get a good look at how clear that water was in the area.

While you can spend longer in Thingvellir, we wanted to keep moving due to time and saw what we came to see. The continental divide is the main attraction in Thingvellir. Oxararfoss and Silfra are common stops as well. With only 6 days in Iceland, we needed to keep moving.

Silfra dive site in Thingvellir National Park. Check out our perfect 6 day Iceland itinerary with a map of all the best stops here!

THE GOLDEN CIRCLE’S GEYSIR & STROKKUR

After Thingvellir, the next stop on the Golden Circle is Geysir. The drive between the two places takes about 40 minutes. Geysir is the first geyser known to the Europeans and the first one to make it into recorded text.

Geysir is basically inactive right now, but it is affected by earthquakes that sometimes cause it to erupt more frequently. You can still see it and the steam coming from the boiling hot water.

Walk through the geothermal area and over to Geysir (it doesn’t take long), but the main attraction at Geysir is Strokkur. Often you will see pictures of Strokkur that are labeled as Geysir. Strokkur erupts about every 6 – 10 minutes although it is not exact. Because it erupts so frequently, take time to watch it from multiple sides.

We visited around 10 p.m., so you could see the colors of sunset in the sky behind it from one of the walkways. From the other side of it though, you can watch the water start bubbling up. A large bubble forms and then bursts as the geyser spews water about 50 – 65 feet (15 – 20 meters) into the air.

Strokkur erupting at Geysir, one of the Golden Circle's main attractions. Click here for a perfect 6 day itinerary for Ring Road in Iceland with a free map!

SEEING GULLFOSS IN THE SUMMER

The last stop on a self-tour of the Golden Circle is Gullfoss. By the time we drove there (only about a 10 minute drive), the sunset painted the sky. The waterfall was in the shadows and is down in a gorge a little bit. If you want to see it in the sunlight, make sure to go in the middle of the day.

However, since it is part of the Golden Circle tours, know that it will be busy. We saw less than 10 other people while we visited. There are walkways to take you down to several viewpoints, but the mist was so heavy and we were so cold that we didn’t venture too close.

While Gullfoss is worth a stop, we liked many of the other waterfalls more. Because of this, we kept moving to find a hotel for the night.

Sunset at Gullfoss in the summer. Check out our perfect 6 day itinerary for Iceland in the summer here!

A HOTEL ON ICELAND’S GOLDEN CIRCLE

We planned to start the drive to our first stop of the next day since it was still daylight, but tiredness forced us to look for nearby accommodations. Even though it was already about 11:30 p.m., we stopped in at Hotel Gullfoss and were able to book a room for $152 (average for Iceland).

I highly recommend this hotel. The staff was kind and welcoming, the breakfast was amazing, and the room was perfect. I loved the breakfast area with the large windows and views over the Icelandic landscape. Located only a few minutes from Gullfoss, the location is perfect if you want to see it in the morning.

Day 2: Chasing the Best Waterfalls on Iceland’s South Coast

We spent most of the second day exploring some of the best and most popular waterfalls along the southern coast of Iceland. Thanks to a late night and jet lag, we slept in a little bit. After waking up and getting some breakfast, we headed out to our first waterfall of the day.

Haifoss and Granni waterfalls in Iceland (The Ultimate Ring Road Adventure: A 6 Day Iceland Itinerary)

SOUTHERN ICELAND’S BEST WATERFALL: HAIFOSS

One of my favorite waterfalls of the trip , Haifoss, required some off-road driving. If you have a 2-wheel drive vehicle, you can still make it to this one. Make sure to take it slow as there are some big rocks and potholes in the road.

Pay attention to the conditions of the road, especially if it is wet. You may not be able to access this waterfall in the winter since some of the roads may close.

The drive from Gullfoss to Haifoss takes about an hour and 15 minutes. There are signs to direct you to Haifoss, and there is a small parking lot once you arrive. Because it is off the beaten path, there are not many people who come to visit Haifoss. There were several other vehicles in the parking lot, but we only saw two other couples while we were there.

Rainbow through the mist at Haifoss in Iceland. Click here for a 6 day Iceland itinerary including Iceland's best waterfalls with a free map.

It takes about 5 – 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the edge of the gorge. You look across and see Haifoss and Granni (meaning neighbor) as well as some other smaller waterfalls depending on the time of year.

Haifoss is one of the tallest waterfalls we saw, falling 400 feet (122 meters) to the base of the gorge. Arriving in the middle of the day allowed us to see rainbows in the mist of the waterfalls too.

There is a path you can hike down to get to the base of the canyon, but we chose to skip that due to limited time with only 6 days in Iceland. If you are looking to spend a little more money and save time, you can hire a private helicopter to take you here. We only know that because of the one that landed while we were there.

The river flowing from Haifoss in Iceland

SELJALANDSFOSS: WALKING BEHIND A WATERFALL IN ICELAND

After Haifoss, we drove back to Ring Road to start heading east along the south coast. Seljalandsfoss is about a two hour drive from Haifoss or an hour and a half from Gullfoss if you skip Haifoss. There are bathrooms in the parking lot at Seljalandsfoss that are pretty nice.

Seljalandsfoss is known for the path that goes behind the waterfall. It is a popular waterfall since you can see it from the road and easily access it from the parking lot. The path is paved and smooth other than the section that goes behind the waterfall making it easier to access for those who need a smooth walkway.

We went in the early evening (around 5:30 p.m.), but a few tour buses still lined the parking lot. Even with the tour buses, the waterfall felt fairly empty.

If you plan to take the path behind the waterfall (and you should!), bring a waterproof jacket. If you have waterproof pants and shoes, wear them as well.

The mist soaked my camera by the end, so I tried to dry the lens as much as possible immediately. Our GoPro was the go to camera for this one as it was the only truly waterproof camera we had with us.

GLJUFRABUI: A HIDDEN WATERFALL IN A CANYON

I have no idea how to pronounce this one, but it was another of our favorites . From Seljalandsfoss, either walk about 10 minutes down the path or drive down closer to it. There is no parking lot, so park on the side of the road if you drive down.

We left before we realized it was right next to Seljalandsfoss (to the left if you are facing the waterfall). We came back after visiting Skogafoss when we realized it.

Between Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui, there is a campground. It has indoor bathrooms and showers and an area inside to eat. We did not go inside the building to check it out since we did not plan to stay. There is a grill outside to cook up any food you need and tables and chairs inside. I’m not sure if there are more cooking appliances inside or not.

Gljufrabui waterfall in Iceland is set back in a canyon. For more of Iceland's best waterfalls, check out our full 6 day Iceland road trip itinerary.

Gljufrabui isn’t visible until you are right in front of it because it is set back in a canyon. There used to be a path to the top to look down into it. However, that area had a rope across it when we were there. The path is no longer stable, so we did not chance it.

If you are up for an adventure, hike into the canyon up the stream of water. It is a short distance to the base of the waterfall, and there is a large rock inside the canyon. If you do this, wear waterproof everything. We only had waterproof shoes and jackets.

I went a few steps in and was soaking wet from the mist tunneling out of the canyon. You hike through the water, but it wasn’t very deep at that point. You can walk on the rocks to stay in shallow water or out of the water sometimes. Another couple came prepared and hiked all the way in, but we were cold and wet enough already just from the mist.

SKOGAFOSS: ONE OF ICELAND’S MOST VISITED WATERFALLS

Skogafoss is one of the most well-known and most popular waterfalls in Iceland, but it actually wasn’t one of my favorite waterfalls. It probably did not help that I was freezing cold and soaked from Seljalandsfoss. It was after Skogafoss that we realized that Gljufrabui was right next to Seljalandsfoss – oops!

Even though we went around 7 p.m., there were still quite a few people here. It is only a 30 minute drive from Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui to get to Skogafoss.

A trail allows you to hike up to the top of the waterfall for what looks like an amazing view, but we really just wanted to get warm at the time! We ended up deciding to go back to Gljufrabui instead of hiking to the top. We do not regret our decision but hope to go back and hike up one day. If you plan to walk up anywhere near the base of Skogafoss, wear waterproof clothing again. The mist blows everywhere!

Day 3: Iceland’s Plane Wrecks, Puffins, and Precious Jewels

After our day of waterfalls, we spent the night near the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck to get an early start. This area is only about 30 minutes from Skogafoss.

We stayed at the Solheimahjaleiga Guesthouse for about $130. It is so close to the start of the hike that it was perfect for us. We had our own room, but we shared bathrooms and showers. Each bathroom and shower is in a separate room and completely private.

The breakfast was included and had a wide variety of foods in a room full of windows to enjoy the surrounding views. If you have some extra time, there are plenty of other things to do in Vik and the surrounding areas.

HIKING TO THE SOLHEIMASANDUR PLANE WRECK

Get our full guide with everything you need to know about hiking to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck here.

The hike to the Solheimsandur plane wreck is not a difficult hike, but it feels longer than it is. We started our hike around 6:00 a.m. The hike is a total of 4 miles (7 km) and takes about an hour each way.

The walk was easy but the area is very desolate. You can see the black rock arch off to the left for some of the hike if the weather is clear enough.

Be aware that the weather can change suddenly. On our hike out and back, we had sun, clouds, heavy fog, and rain – all in the course of about two and half hours. Bring clothes that are versatile and prepare for different conditions and temperatures.

Once we got to the plane, it was harder than I thought to climb on top of the plane, and I ripped my pants wide open climbing back down. I found out afterwards that you are not supposed to climb up on the plane. I saw pictures of people on top of it and watched others climb up, so I did too. If you do so, you climb at your own risk. The top does not feel stable at all.

On our hike back around 8 a.m., we saw a lot of groups headed out to the wreck. If you want it to yourself in the days of long sunlight, start your hike before 8 a.m. when it gets busier. The plane wreck ended up being one of our favorite stops in Iceland because of how unique it is.

DYRHOLAEY: WHERE TO FIND PUFFINS IN ICELAND IN THE SUMMER

If you want to see puffins in Iceland, go to Dyrholaey in the summer. This is your best chance to see puffins in Iceland without a tour.

The puffins are out of their nests from mid-morning to early evening, so plan around that. Even when they are out, you can still see them out in the water and going back and forth to the nests.

Your best chance of seeing puffins at Dyrholaey is early in the morning from what a guide told us. We saw a few when they came back to the nests for a few minutes.

To get here, turn south on Dyrholavegur/218 and drive until it ends in a parking lot. Don’t turn off for Black Rock Arch unless you have a four-wheel drive vehicle. The views from there are good, but there aren’t many puffins in that area.

Once you park, take the trails all the way to the left. Puffin houses cover the tops of the cliffs there. Be patient as it takes time to spot them nearby. Keep your eyes on the water and the birds flying over the beach to spot them out of the nests.

The drive to Dyrholaey takes about 15 minutes from the plane wreck parking lot or about two and half hours from Reykjavik.

Puffins at Dyrholaey in Iceland. Check out our perfect 6 day itinerary for Ring Road in Iceland!

Whatever you do, don’t climb over the chains along the cliffs at Dyrholaey. There are a lot of places in Iceland where the chains and ropes are to protect you. If you decide to climb over them, you only put yourself at risk.

The chains here are to protect the puffins’ houses. We watched one girl climb right over and walk all over them for her perfect shot. One of the guides who happened to be there started yelling at her, but she did not seem to care at all about protecting the puffins.

Besides seeing the puffins at Dyrholaey, take time to walk or drive up to the Dyrholaey lighthouse. It is a good idea to have four-wheel drive to get to the lighthouse if you drive. There are some amazing views of the rocky coastline and black sand beaches along the paths between where the puffins are and where the lighthouse is if you walk.

REYNISFJARA BEACH: BASALT COLUMNS & SNEAKY WAVES

Reynifsjara Beach is a popular stop in Iceland. The beach at Reynifsjara is much more crowded than it appears in pictures. The basalt columns are popular for photos, but if you wait your turn, you can get an area to yourself.

People were nice about trying to stay out of each other’s photos for the most part. Even with a full parking lot and people using overflow parking, we still managed to get photos alone on the basalt columns.

Be aware of “sneaky waves” on the beach as the signs warn tourists. People get close to the water, turn their backs, and then get swept away by the large waves that sneak up on them. There are a few huge but shallow caves along the beach and the Reynisdrangar rock formations just off the beach, but keep your eyes on the waves.

Be aware of how close you get to the water even as a strong swimmer. Several people die here each year, swept away by the waves.

There is an overpriced (even for Iceland) restaurant at Reynifsjara Beach if you need food. There are bathrooms, but you have to purchase something to use them. Everything is overpriced, but there are some cheaper items if you need to use the bathroom.

The parking lot was almost full when we arrived and overflowing when we left about 30 minutes later. It takes about 30 minutes to get here from the Dyrholaey lighthouse area. Even though you look over Reynifsjara Beach from Dyrholaey, you have to drive around the inlet to get between the two.

VISITING JOKULSARLON GLACIER LAGOON

From Reynisfjara to Jokulsarlon, the drive takes about two and a half hours. Iceland is full of beautiful views on this drive. We stopped a few times which made our drive longer than expected.

You can enjoy views of different waterfalls and glaciers along the side of the road. No matter what the map says, plan some extra time to stop for the views on your Ring Road road trip around Iceland.

There are a couple of parking lots you can choose from for a visit to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. We pulled into the first parking lot first. The icy wind hit us in the face immediately.

We experienced our coldest weather in Iceland at Jokulsarlon. It seemed fitting with the cold air to take a five minute walk and be looking out over floating icebergs. However, unless you want a hike and a view from above, skip the first parking lot and continue to the bridge.

Sitting on a rock on the edge of Iceland's glacier bay, Jokulsarlon. Get all the best stops for an Iceland road trip on our 6 day Iceland itinerary for Ring Road.

Back in the car, we warmed up and drove down to the next parking lot just past the bridge. This is the main parking lot and where the tours leave from. You have options like kayaking or taking a duck boat tour, but we arrived soon after everything closed.

With the sun lower in the sky and no tour buses around, we enjoyed the sun glistening off of the icebergs in peace and quiet. Well, it was not quite quiet. We enjoyed the sounds of nature – the howling wind and the iceberg that cracked apart in front of us. If you are lucky, you may spot some seals or other wildlife here as well.

Be prepared to need every layer you brought here! The wind did not let up, and it was freezing cold (literally!) even on a sunny day in mid-June. We did not stay out as long as we might have if it wasn’t so cold. The views are beautiful, and the area may be warmer earlier in the day when the sun is higher in the sky.

ICELAND’S DIAMOND BEACH IN THE SUMMER

To get to Diamond Beach, you can either walk across the street and bridge or drive across to the parking lot. You want to be on the east side of the bridge for Glacier Lagoon and on the west side for Diamond Beach.

If you have extra time, visit both sides for both Diamond Beach and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. We opted to drive over thanks to the cold temperatures and wind (also, we are wimps with the cold since we are from Florida!).

This beach looks completely different from pictures I have seen of it in the winter. In the winter, large chunks of icebergs have washed out of the lagoon and back up on the shore. In the summer, they have melted down and are much smaller.

Still, walking down to the water’s edge, you see the chunks of ice sparkling in the sunlight and know exactly why it is called Diamond Beach. The contrast of the glistening chunks of ice on the black sand beach makes for one of the most unique and beautiful beaches I have ever visited.

BEAUTIFUL DRIVE FROM HOFN TO DJUPIVOGUR

The drive on Ring Road in Iceland is prettiest from Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach to Akureyri. Factor in plenty of extra time for stops if you drive this stretch of the road. This area is not a place you will see listed on other itineraries for Iceland or lists of things to do or places to see in Iceland.

If you are driving Ring Road, plan some extra time here. This was my absolute favorite part of the drive for views. I did not enjoy the dramatic cliff drops with no barrier between the car and death though.

The area near Hofn gives you beautiful mountain views as you follow the curve of the rocky coastline. Enjoy fields of lupine in front of snow-capped mountains and lakes and rivers that reflect the beauty of the mountains. Driving this part of the road later in the evening gave us sunset views for hours thanks to visiting Iceland in the summer.

Because we took so long with picture stops, we ended up stopping in this area for the night. We stayed at Berunes HI Hostel & Camp in the cutest little cabin. They also have hostel rooms available, but we loved our little cabin even if it cost a little more ($130 versus $110). If we return to Iceland in the summer sometime, I want to stay longer and explore this area more.

Day 4: The Best Waterfalls in Iceland – An All-Star Lineup

If we hadn’t already fallen in love, the waterfalls we saw on our fourth day in Iceland would have changed that! Of our 6 days in Iceland, this is one of the days we spent the most time in the car. It was worth it to get to some waterfalls that are more off of the beaten track.

EUROPE’S MOST POWERFUL WATERFALL: DETTIFOSS

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe according to many sources. That alone should convince you to take the long drive to get there.

From Jokulsarlon, it is about a six hour drive. For a couple of hours, we had no radio, no WiFi, and saw no one on the road. The last part of the drive is on a dirt road that was under construction, so that slowed us down a little bit too.

When visiting Dettifoss, you want to make sure you visit the east side of Dettifoss. You can visit both the east and west sides, but it takes about an hour and a half to drive between them.

The west side of Dettifoss has paved roads and a paved parking lot with space for tour buses. If you take a tour to Dettifoss, you will go to the west side. The east side is only for cars.

From the west side, you face directly across at the waterfall. That may sound good, but the mist from the waterfall is in the way. The people we could see on the viewing platform were mostly wearing ponchos thanks to the mist.

On the east side of Dettifoss, you can walk right up to the edge of the waterfall and feel its power. You can walk along the edge of the gorge to get a variety of views of the waterfall. Because it is only cars on this side, there are not many people. The parking lot was full, but the area still felt empty. There are bathrooms, but they were locked.

HIKING TO A LESSER KNOWN WATERFALL IN ICELAND: SELFOSS

Whatever you do, don’t go from Dettifoss back to your car. You will see a sign along the trail that points up the river to Selfoss. It is less than 3/4 of a mile (1 km) to get to Selfoss from Dettifoss. You have to climb over a few rocks, but the trail is pretty easy. The first part of it is the worst part (and not that bad), and the last part is flat and hard-packed sand.

When we got back to Selfoss, there was only one other person there. Along the walk, you start to see a ton of small waterfalls pouring over the edge into the river to head down to Dettifoss.

If you parked on the east side of Dettifoss, you have the view from across the gorge of all of these waterfalls. From the west side, the trail stops early because of all of these waterfalls but lets you look straight down at the main waterfall at Selfoss from a distance. The main fall for Selfoss is still visible from the east side though.

You can get closer to it if you are willing to get your feet a little wet. There are some shallow pools at the top where the rain and mist have gathered, but you aren’t walking through rushing water or anything like that.

THE WATERFALL WITH THE LITTLE POOL: ALDEYJARFOSS

Aldeyjarfoss is the hardest waterfall to access but our favorite waterfall we saw in Iceland . You need to have a four-wheel drive vehicle to get to this one since it is on an F-road.

F-roads require 4-wheel drive. If the weather has been good and the road is dry, you might make it in a two-wheel drive. Make sure you know if your rental company is okay with you taking your car on F-roads.

The drive from Dettifoss to Aldeyjarfoss took about two and a half hours. If you are coming from Akureyri to Aldeyjarfoss, it will take you about an hour and a half.

When you get to a fence following the directions, you may think you made a wrong turn. You did not. You have to get out and open the fence to drive through it. Once you are through, make sure to close the fence to keep the sheep in! After the fence, you are only about 10 – 15 minutes from the waterfall.

There is a parking lot and two primitive bathrooms at Aldeyjarfoss. The parking lot was empty when we arrived, and we only saw two other couples about an hour after we arrived. We went at 8:30 p.m. or so though. From the parking lot, it takes about five minutes to walk down the trail along the gorge to Aldeyjarfoss.

Take time to enjoy the views of the gorge on your way down. One thing that sets Aldeyjarfoss apart from other waterfalls is the basalt columns lining the gorge and surrounding the waterfall. As it pours over the edge, it falls into a large pool area before making its way down the river. This pool area stayed covered in white foam from the power of the waterfall.

Basalt columns at Aldeyjarfoss in Iceland. Check out our perfect 6 day itinerary for a summer Ring Road in Iceland!

The sun shone down on the waterfall and columns when we first arrived, but by about 9 p.m. in June, the waterfall and many of the columns were in the shadows. When the sun shone down on the waterfall, it created a rainbow in the mist.

At Aldeyjarfoss, if you are up for an adventure, hike down to the base across from the waterfall to get to a little natural pool across from Aldeyjarfoss. This pool at Aldeyjarfoss is one of the pictures that regularly appears on social media. I have seen pictures of people in the natural pool across from Aldeyjarfoss, but it is not what it seems.

The pool is only about a foot deep at the deepest spot and the bottom is covered in algae. Even full it would not be all that deep. The water in the natural pool is cold but may warm up some in the direct sunlight. It is not all that enticing to climb into it, even for a picture.

NORTHERN ICELAND’S MOST POPULAR WATERFALL: GODAFOSS

About 45 minutes up the road towards Akureyri from Aldeyjarfoss, you will find Godafoss along the side of the road. If you’re coming from Akureyri to Godafoss, the drive takes about 45 minutes. Because Godafoss is so easily accessible, it can get busy during the daytime.

We ended up at Godafoss close to 11 p.m. There were still a few other people around at that time and the summer sun hung low in the sky. From the parking lot, it only takes about 2 minutes to walk to the viewpoint. You can also walk over to the other side of the waterfall to see it from a different angle.

Godafoss is known as the Waterfall of the Gods because they threw the pagan gods in when Iceland became a Christian country to avoid an invasion. It is not just one waterfall but about five waterfalls together. Because of how large the waterfalls are, it makes for a beautiful view.

I read later that you can hike down to the base of this waterfall, but we did not know about it at the time. From the east side (by the cafe), you can follow a small trail to the bottom. It is not a long trail, but it does require some climbing over rocks.

Day 5: Driving from Akureyri to Reykjavik

As we left Godafoss and continued driving to Akureyri, we started looking for places to stay or even camp for the night. We looked for campgrounds in this area but had no luck finding one. We stopped at a few hotels, but this is a more expensive area of Iceland.

After realizing that, we decided to keep driving and get out of town to look for campgrounds. Around 2 a.m., our car broke down. We ended up being towed back to Akureyri and had to stay there for the night after all. It took until around noon for the rental company to find us a rental with a different company, so we had to shorten our itinerary for this day a little bit.

Akureyri Iceland at sunset during the summer. Check out our perfect 6 day itinerary for Ring Road in Iceland!

AKUREYRI: NORTHERN ICELAND’S BIGGEST CITY

Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland. Known as the capital of the north, there is a port, airport, rental companies, etc. There are a ton of hotel options but not many camping options (at least not on Ring Road).

Most hotels in Akureyri started around $200 a night. This was more expensive than most other areas of Iceland. We stayed at the Icelandair Hotel Akureyri . The hotel was the nicest one we stayed in on the trip, but it was also the most expensive one we stayed in on the trip. We did not have breakfast here since breakfast cost $30 or so a person. Instead, the woman at the front desk gave us directions to her favorite local bakery.

Akureyri makes a great base for exploring northern Iceland. If you like city living and having more options around for food and hotels, set up base here for a few days and do day trips throughout northern Iceland. It is a cute town, and I would have liked to explore it more. Since we were on day 5 out of our 6 days in Iceland, we took off as soon as we had a rental car to make up for lost time.

VISITING THE SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA IN A DAY

We planned to spend more time here and in the Westfjords area, but our broken down car delay took some time out of our six days in Iceland. We still drove through the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to see one of the waterfalls, and it felt like we landed on another planet. Similar to the rest of Iceland, the views are beautiful. The lava fields combined with the clouds to give it an otherworldly feeling.

Snaefellsnes is an easy two hour drive from Reykjavik. Coming from Akureyri though, it took over four and a half hours to get to this area. If you come to this area, know there is more to see including glaciers and ice caves. We ended up only stopping at Kirkjufellsfoss for the waterfall due to time.

Hitchhiking in Iceland on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Get a full Iceland road trip itinerary for Ring Road in the summer here.

KIRKJUFELLSFOSS & MOUNT KIRKJUFELL: WESTERN ICELAND’S MOST POPULAR WATERFALL

The parking lot for this waterfall is relatively small, so we parked across the street. Despite the full lot, there were no buses when we visited in the middle of the afternoon.

From the parking lot, there is a mostly paved walkway that goes up to the waterfall, across the top of the waterfall, and back down the other side. The path does not make a full circle, so you have to go back up and over to return to your car.

Kirkjufell Mountain in Iceland in summer. Get the perfect Ring Road itinerary for 6 days in Iceland here.

The view of Kirkjufell mountain in the background is the famous shot at this waterfall. Hike up and across the top of the other side of the waterfall to get the mountain in the background. It makes for great long exposure photos if you have the right filter with you (I did not).

While Kirkjufellsfoss is a beautiful waterfall, we needed more time on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. The waterfall alone is not worth the 4 hours round trip from Reykjavik. However, it is worth it if you are already in the area.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, it makes an appearance in a few episodes apparently. If you are coming to Snaefellsnes, make sure to schedule in more than just this waterfall while you are there to really make it worth it.

From Kirkjufellsfoss, we drove back to Iceland to catch our flight to Paris and then Turkey that night before returning a week later to finish out day 6. Most people don’t take a week vacation in the middle of their 6 days in Iceland, so you may have more time to spend in the Snaefellsnes peninsula or in Reykjavik than this 6 day Iceland itinerary includes.

Day 6: One Day in Reykjavik and Visiting the Blue Lagoon

Our sixth day in Iceland was actually a week later than the first 5 days in Iceland. We had a day layover at the end of our trip that ended up being more of a night layover.

Our plane landed late, and by the time we got our rental car, we left the airport around 1 a.m. We had to be back at the airport at around 9 a.m. the same morning.

We booked a room at Hotel Lotus and loved it for the few hours we were there. The breakfast included a large selection and the room felt larger than it was. The only negative was that the price was a little higher than we would have liked. The breakfast and location made the price more worth it though.

If you have extra time to spend in Reykjavik, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. Many people choose to make Reykjavik their base and take day trips from Reykjavik to explore Iceland.

However, that limits how far around Ring Road you can go. Reykjavik is the biggest city in Iceland, so if you plan on buying any souvenirs in Iceland , Reykjavik is the best place to find them.

BLUE LAGOON: SEE IT FOR FREE

Instead of going straight to the hotel and crashing, we decided to take advantage of the midnight sun. We drove straight to the Blue Lagoon. If you want to swim in the Blue Lagoon, tickets are about $90 a person.

Because of timing and not really wanting to pay that much for a man-made thermal bath, we chose to see the Blue Lagoon for free . Swimming in the Blue Lagoon is still on the bucket list for now.

There are some parts of the Blue Lagoon that are open 24 hours a day. This area is also free and easy to access. We ended up being there at the right time to watch the sunrise over the Blue Lagoon at around 3:00 a.m. in June. No one else happened to visit in the middle of the night with us. Click here for our full guide to seeing the Blue Lagoon for free any time of the day or night .

HALLGRIMSKIRKJA: ICELAND’S MOST FAMOUS CHURCH

Hallgrimskirkja is the most famous church in all of Iceland. During normal hours, go inside and up to the top to enjoy the view. Considering it was 4 a.m., that was not an option for us.

It did mean no one else was around for pictures though. The streets of Reykjavik were pretty empty at that hour of the morning. From Hallgrimskirkja, we headed straight to the hotel to sleep for a few hours before catching our flight home.

Iceland is an amazing country. Visiting Iceland for 6 days in the summer allowed us time to go around Ring Road but not enough time to see it all. I’d love to go back in the winter to see the Northern Lights and compare the summer and winter landscapes.

Have you been to Iceland or is it still on your bucket list ? Is there anything we missed that we need to make sure to see next time?

I have 5 nights - 6 days. Going with my wife and 7o year old parents. They don't love to hike, but we do like to drive. Everyone keeps telling me to only Rey and the south with the time we have, but your itinerary inspires me to think we can get it all done in our timeframe. Do you think we can do it?

Christine Wheeler

Tuesday 25th of May 2021

I think you can, but make sure there are things at the north side that you want to see. We loved the east side and the north side of Iceland, but we were running low on time for the north/west side because of the car breaking down. If you aren't doing big hikes, you'll have time to enjoy more of the waterfalls you can drive right up to and the other things you can experience without much hiking.

These photos are amazing! We are looking at going in September for 6 days as well! How much did you spend to rent and fill up your car in order to do this itinerary?

Wednesday 27th of May 2020

I hope you get to go! We spent about $600 I believe for the rental car. The biggest thing is to look for 4 wheel drive.

Saturday 1st of February 2020

Hi! About how much did you spend for the 6 days? Trying to budget for when I go. Loved this itinerary. Thanks! :)

I'm not sure exactly. We didn't spent much on food - maybe $40 a day total for both of us. We tried to stay in places that included food and ate at a lot of gas stations because restaurants were expensive and uncommon outside of the main cities. We spent about $600 - $700 I think on the rental car. Hotels were about $100 - $150 a night and included breakfast for the most part. I don't remember gas prices, but we probably spent about $50 a day on gas with driving so much each day - I remember the gas being expensive per gallon and filling up about once a day or whenever we found a gas station :-)

Day 1 – welcome to the land of fire and ice.

Transfer from Keflavík International Airport to Reykjavík (included).

If you’re arriving earlier in the day, you might consider adding a day tour. We’d be happy to make suggestions based on your interests.

One of our favorite activities after a long flight is to visit one of the neighborhood geothermal pools. It is so refreshing to relax in the warm water, breathing in the fresh Icelandic air. It’s a wonderful way to get to see Icelandic daily life and maybe meet a few locals. It’s also nice to take a stroll in the old city center, perhaps visiting one of the museums or relaxing with a cup of coffee in a cozy café.

Dinner this evening is at your leisure. Reykjavík offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a wonderful way to get better acquainted with Iceland’s capital.

Please note: If you have added extra nights in Reykjavík before your tour, our guide will meet you and the group for the start of the tour on Day 2 according to the standard “Winter Wonders of Iceland Group Adventure” itinerary.

Day 2 – Geothermal goodness & Northern Lights hunt

Start your adventure by visiting the fascinating Aurora Reykjavik Northern Lights Center. You’ll get a great introduction to the Northern Lights, how they’re formed, and the folklore surrounding them. You’ll also get tips about how to capture the Northern Lights on film. You can also get assistance from the staff in adjusting your camera’s settings for Northern Lights photos.

Depart Reykjavík and head onwards to Þingvellir (Thingvellir National Park), a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the world’s oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. This place makes us Icelanders enormously proud of our heritage, and your guide will show you some of the amazing sites here. You might even have a rare chance to walk between two continents!

Continue on to the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools and the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring. Last but not least, you’ll visit the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade. Stop at Skálholt, Iceland’s capital during the Middle Ages, now a culture center with a beautiful church.

During the day you will also visit the town of Laugarvatn. The town is built around three hot springs, and the residents have cleverly harnessed the hot springs for heating, greenhouses and even cooking. You’ll visit a unique outdoor geothermal bakery where sweet Icelandic rye bread is baked in hot sands. You’ll have the chance to taste some of the freshly baked bread, hot from the ground. It’s especially delicious slathered in sweet Icelandic butter.

If weather conditions are right, your guide will take you on a northern lights hunt on foot in the area outside your hotel tonight, or on the evening of Day 3 or 4.

Day 3 – Spectacular south shore

Drive along the south shore, an area of Iceland that is especially beautiful to view in the winter. This is one of the main farming regions of the country, and the road will pass by typical Icelandic farms, often with Icelandic horses roaming in the fields.

This part of Iceland is home to the wonderful LAVA Center, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes, and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. Enjoy both the exhibit and viewing an interesting film about Icelandic volcanoes at the Center’s cinema.

Continue onwards. If the skies are clear you might see the area’s two most famous volcanoes in the distance: Mount Hekla (last eruption 2000) and Eyjafjallajökull (last eruption 2010). You might also possibly catch a glimpse of the Westman Islands archipelago off the coast of Iceland.

Stop at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. If trail conditions are right, you might be able to walk behind the ribbon-like Seljalandsfoss falls. Skógafoss is a beautifully shaped waterfall that makes a perfect backdrop for a selfie. It has an interesting history geologically, and it just may also be hiding some buried treasure from the Middle Ages.

We’d like you to meet some of our best countrymen with a visit to an Icelandic Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) base. Their joint mission is to prevent accidents and save human lives. ICE-SAR serves in both Icelandic and international rescue efforts. You’ll meet some members of the team and get an introduction to the unique ICE-SAR program.

Head onwards, passing Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, to visit Reynisfjara beach. Take a walk on the black sand, admiring the extraordinary rock formations and thundering waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Cross Eldhraun, a vast lava field created from a very destructive 18th-century eruption as you head into Southeast Iceland. The snows of winter make this landscape into something very mysterious.

Day 4 – World of glaciers

Today you will be in a world of glaciers! You’ll be visiting the southern area of Vatnajökull National Park, named after Europe’s largest glacier. The total park area covers almost 14% of Iceland, making it the largest national park in Western Europe! Drive through vast sand plains created by glacial outwash as you head east.

Visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you’ll enjoy the breathtaking sight of icebergs floating in the fantastic 180-meter (591-foot) deep glacial lagoon. Make sure that camera is charged and ready! Nearby is the dramatic beauty of Fellsfjara (aka Diamond Beach), named for the shrinking icebergs that settle on the black sands before drifting out to sea.

Next, you’ll view Svínafellsjökull, one of the most beautiful glacial tongues that are slowly creeping down from Vatnajökull. Visit the national park’s famous Skaftafell area, a site of outstanding natural beauty dominated by several magnificent glaciers.

After your amazing day, your group will return to your hotel.

Day 5 – Hot springs & Blue Lagoon spa visit

Head back along the beautiful South Coast, enjoying a different view of the winter landscapes. Visit the village of Hveragerði, which is one of the few settlements in the world located directly in the middle of a geothermal area. Hveragerði is often called “The Flower Village” because of its many flower greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs.

Turn onto a southern coastal road and follow alongside the shoreline with its breathtaking sea waves, passing through a deserted community that once was a flourishing center for the region. The trip then takes you through the surreal landscapes of the Reykjanes peninsula, where you can enjoy a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, a unique wonder of nature with pleasantly warm, mineral-rich water in the middle of a black lava field.

Return to Reykjavík, where your guide will bid you farewell at the hotel.

Day 6 – Goodbye Iceland

Transfer from Reykjavík to Keflavík International Airport by Flybus (included). Breakfast at your hotel. Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight.

We recommend you depart from your hotel no later than three hours before your departure flight. We wish you a pleasant trip back to your homeland and hope to see you in Iceland again!

FAQs about our guided group trips

How does a guided group tour work.

On this type of tour, you’ll travel around Iceland by bus with the same driver-guide for the length of your trip. Guided group tours are a great way to make like-minded friends, as you’ll spend time with the same travelers for your whole vacation.

You’ll get to stay in accommodation around the country, and some tours include a few evening meals too. After a day’s exploring, you’ll go back to your private room and meet your guide and group the next morning to continue your trip.

All of our guided group tours start and finish in Reykjavík.

How big will the group be on the tour?

There are 2 group sizes available:

  • Small group: Up to 16 people
  • Big group: Up to 36 people

Small groups offer a more intimate travel experience, whereas big groups are more wallet-friendly.

What will the other people in my group be like?

You’ll likely be with people from a whole mix of backgrounds, from different countries and of different ages. Your guide will entertain you with fun facts and jokes as you journey around Iceland. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll be laughing along with your group!

There will most probably be a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups of friends and family.

Is there a luggage size restriction on the bus?

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours 3 days and longer are as follows:

  • 1 suitcase or large bag per person for clothes and overnight items
  • 1 day bag for essential items, like a camera, extra clothes, and valuables

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours up to 3 days are as follows:

  • 1 small carry-on luggage, bag size: 50 x 30 x 60 cm (19.9 x 11.8 x 23.6 inches)
  • If you have large luggage with you, please check with your accommodation if they offer luggage storage while on this tour. If that is not a possibility, you can pay an extra fee per luggage (2000 ISK) with 72 hours notice.

Each day your luggage will be loaded onto the bus. In the evening, you’ll take all your bags with you to your room.

Can I customize a guided group tour?

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.

Jan was a great tour guide. While the hike was rather simple, it was still fun. Next time i will do a more advanced climb. So much fun! This was definitely a bucket list item for me!

What a great ride! I'm an experienced rider and while it was slow at times waiting for everyone to catch up, the entire ride was very scenic and fun! They had some great locations and paths for us to follow. I loved it!

I couldn't buy a ticket in the Blue Lagoon website so i bought one on here and it worked out great. As a solo male traveler, i had a great time enjoying the lagoons with a beer.

Jòn our guide was fantastic. The ice cave formation was amazing. However, i would not recommend this tour for people with mobility issues, it is a bit of a hike from the van to the cave. Uphill mostly. But the experience on walking on ice and seeing mother nature create this masterpiece was spectacular. A must see.
