Preston Manor and Gardens go beyond allowing visitors to learn about the opulence of the Edwardian era; the eloquent testimony to the lavish bygone era is an opportunity to live and breathe the aesthetic grandeur and cultural splendour.
The impeccably preserved Edwardian manor house whispers tales of yesteryears and allows visitors to vicariously experience the lavish parties held within the authentically adorned halls.
The grand chandeliers, intricate installations of woodwork and ornate furnishings all stand as a testament to the era when craftsmanship was king. Beyond the architecture and labyrinth of secret gardens, Preston Manor narrates the tales of the previous inhabitants, who imprinted their legacy within the extravagant walls.
History of Preston Manor
Preston Manor’s architectural history spans from the 1200s, with the manor itself built in the late 1700s, replacing a medieval lodging tied to the local Parish. Thomas Western , the first lord of the manor, incorporated the previous dwelling as the basement. In 1905, Charles Peach redesigned the manor, adding a servants’ wing, dining room, and a North-facing veranda, shaping its current form. Protected as a grade II-listed building , it houses period pieces from the 17th to 19th centuries, blending Georgian architecture with an Edwardian interior .
Known as one of Britain’s most haunted places , Preston Manor’s ghostly tales date to the 19th century. The woman in grey, frequently sighted, roams the boiler room, main staircase, and roof. A séance unveiled an excommunicated nun’s spirit buried in the grounds. Workers uncovered a skeleton in the unhallowed ground near the south terrace. Visitors have reported floating amputated arms and phantom children playing in the manor and gardens.
Gardens and Grounds
The Preston Manor walled gardens and grounds comprise romantically sweeping lawns, perfect for strolls in all seasons , secret doorways, carefully manicured fruit trees and flowerbeds, and a lily pond , all of which contribute to the traditional charm of the landscape.
Visitors are welcome to find a spot to relax, and children are free to play; although, you might want to find a space away from the pet graveyard, which is the final resting place of some famous felines, including two Brighton Council mousers, and George, the Pavilion Cat . On occasion, the croquet lawn is home to an outdoor cinema. The gardens have also hosted educational workshops, tours, and activities catering to children and adults, wedding receptions and other private functions, community events, such as concerts and open-air theatre performances, and ghost tours, especially close to Halloween . Other seasonal events held in the garden include summer and Easter fetes, designed to engage the local community, and celebrate the changing seasons.
Visitor Experience
Unfortunately, Preston Manor and Gardens are currently closed to members of the public, but the gates remain open for pre-booked school groups and special events . The gates will be opened for the Telling Tales , Talking Trails seminar and web app tour , which is being funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and will take place on Thursday, the 19th of October. This is a free-ticketed event, with limited places available. General visitors will also be welcomed into the manor on the 21st of October, from 9:30-12 (am). If you have always been enchanted by the tale of A Christmas Carol , you can meet the ghosts of the Christmas past in the manor on selected dates in December 2023. Tickets for the interactive experience are available from £26 per person.
Plan Your Visit
Preston Manor is two miles north of Brighton’s city centre; if travelling on foot , expect a 30-minute walk . Alternatively, you can catch a bus from North Street or outside the Royal Pavilion or hop on the train to Preston Park Station from Brighton train station.
Unless you are a blue badge-holder , you won’t find parking spaces outside the manor ; so make sure to research parking spaces before you travel.
Or you can call the booking team or email to book private tours or private events.

Preston Manor
Preston Manor is a historic house in Preston Park north of Brighton city centre.
The manor has experienced a varied history that is believed to date back to the Saxon era (around the 9th or 10th century). At the time of the Domesday survey (1086) it belonged to the Diocese of Chichester and was rented out to private tenants until the Crown took possession of the manor following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Around this time, it is said that Anne of Cleves (the fourth wife of Henry VIII) stayed at the house.
In the 17th century, it was home to Sir Anthony Shirley, 1st Baronet Shirley of Preston and by the early 18th century it was acquired by Thomas Western who set about renovating and expanding the property and most of what you see today is the result of this work.
By the end of the 18th century, the property was sold to William Stanford whose family became the richest in Sussex, and in the 19th century the family played an important role in the development of Brighton and Hove. The family eventually bequeathed the property to the city on the condition that it be preserved as a museum and it is now operated as a museum showing how the upper classes lived during the Edwardian era.
Preston Manor has a reputation as one of Britain’s most haunted houses, it has featured in an episode of Most Haunted and ghost tours are sometimes conducted here.
The manor is also the setting of the online murder mystery computer game, Murder in the Manor, which includes 360º panoramic views of the manor’s interior set out in the same manner that visitors are able to see it today.
What to see at Preston Manor
Preston Manor is a Grade II* listed building that is part of the 32.58 ha (80½ acre) Preston Village Conservation Area. The core buildings in this area are Preston Manor and the adjacent St Peter’s Church, which was built in the mid-13th century.
The manor is a two-storey building with a Palladian-style facade, which was popular during the Georgian period. From the exterior, the stucco-clad building is not as impressive as many other English manor houses but the interior, which is presented in the style of the Edwardian-era, is rather impressive.
Visitors to Preston Manor are able to visit four levels. On the ground floor, you can see the entrance hall, the Macquoid Room (in the former library), a morning room, the Cleves Room (a small sitting room featuring lavishly-designed gilt leather panels), a drawing room and dining room (which features Qing Dynasty Chinese vases and an impressive collection of 124 Buddhist lions). The first floor is reached via a significant staircase and there you can see several bedrooms. You can also visit the attic, which has a former maid’s workroom displayed as a nursery and you can see the Victorian-era servants’ quarters in the basement. In the basement, you can see remnants of an earlier 13th-century house (dating from 1250).
The garden between the manor and St Peter’s Church is reached by crossing a wooden bridge. The garden is divided into four sections: the 18th-century walled garden, the formal lawn, a sensory garden for the visually impaired and a garden with lily ponds. There is a pet cemetery at the southwestern corner of the garden, which is considered the only one in Sussex. The entire garden has been classified by English Heritage as a Garden of Historic Interest.
Visiting Preston Manor
Preston Manor is located at the northwestern corner of Preston Park, which is in the northern part of Brighton that most visitors don’t get the opportunity to see. It is around a half-hour walk north of central Brighton and local bus routes 5, 5A, 17, 40, 40X and 273 run regularly into the city centre. Free parking is available on site.
It is around a 12-minute walk from the Booth Museum of Natural History .
Admission costs £9 and the annual multi-attraction pass (which gives you combined entry to Preston Manor along with Brighton Museum and the Royal Pavilion ) costs £34.50.
Preston Manor is partially wheelchair accessible. There is access to the ground floor and the basement (which is accessible by lift) but the first floor and attic are only accessible via the staircase. Because this is a historic building, some doorways are too narrow for some electric wheelchairs; however, there are some manual wheelchairs available to use.
There is a small gift shop on site but there is no on-site cafe. However, neighbouring Preston Park has two cafes and there are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby on Preston Road.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the house.
You should allow 45 minutes to an hour to visit all the rooms and the garden of Preston Manor plus an additional hour to get here and to return to central Brighton.

What is Preston Castle?
Preston Castle was constructed in 1894 as the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, a reform school for boys. The Romanesque Revival style of architecture was to make the building look like a school rather than a prison.
The Castle opened in June 1894 and remained in use until 1960. In 1960 the State planned to demolish the building and from 1960-1968 a group of local women fought to keep it standing. Once the State agreed to not tear the building down they also said they would do nothing to keep it standing.
The building remained vacant and in disrepair until September 2001 when the Preston Castle Foundation leased the building from the State. And later, in 2014, the foundation was granted ownership of the Castle and 12.91 acres.
The Preston Castle Foundation’s mission is to preserve, rehabilitate and utilize the historic Preston Castle site as well as preserving the history of the school, its staff and boys.
Testimonials from Our Valued Visitors
I love Preston Castle and the amazing work the Foundation is doing to restore it. I attended the Preston Castle Haunt for the first time over the weekend and my husband and I had a blast! Well… if you can call having the crap scared out of you a “blast.” Pay the extra for the VIP line. It was worth it to spend less time in line… plus that’s extra money to their fundraising. Quality sets and props… nobody broke character… it was a waking nightmare in the best possible way! Don’t forget to check a regular guided tour through the castle in the daytime!
We took the tour and it was super interesting. The building these days is in pretty bad shape but they still let you see a lot of it and the back story is very interesting. I highly recommend the tour for any history or architecture buffs. It’s a very cool and interesting place. They also have special fundraising events like wine tastings and things so keep an eye out for those.
Preston Castle is a great place to visit. I love history and haunted places, so this didn't disappoint. There were a couple of rooms where I felt "energy". I can't imagine how creepy this place must be on Halloween. Took some amazing pictures here. The staff was friendly and made you feel that you can ask as many questions as you want. They offered us water with it being such a hot day. I can see why some movies and tv shows have been filmed here. Not sure if it would be a good place to bring little ones. I think it's best for teenagers and up.
A beautiful old Castle. It has a both great and greatly horrible history. All I'll say is that it's amazing what we used to do to treat the mistreated and troubled. Anyway... Many local wineries participated. Most were excellent. Food went very quickly. It was definitely a party experience.
Aside from the fact that Preston School of Industry (which is old corrections code for "prison") is an amazing piece of architecture, it also happens to be the best Haunted House around!!! Preston Castle started as a prison for juvenile's. Merle Haggard even spent some time there. The prison was closed and sat in disrepair for years. The hauntings associated with the Castle are easy to find as just about EVERY major paranormal TV show has frequented the building.
I investigated Preston Castle with the group, the Bay Area Ghost Hunters. Based on my experiences and the EVPs collected, I believe the place is haunted! Our group had the whole Castle to ourselves from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. The docents were great guides. While the Castle is important historically, it is also an excellent place to investigate spirit activity. Others in my group reported seeing shadows and orbs; in the early evening we smelled a woman’s perfume around us several times as we toured the Castle–and no one was wearing anything with a scent! I am excited to review my digital recording to see if I captured anything. This is a definite Must-Go!

Take a look inside the famously creepy Winchester House, which has 160 rooms, staircases that lead to nowhere, and doors that open into walls
- The Winchester mansion in San Jose is a labyrinth, filled with staircases that lead to nowhere.
- It has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces.
- Many believe Sarah Winchester built the home to confuse and trap evil spirits that haunted her.
- Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.
Sarah Lockwood Pardee grew up in Connecticut in the 1800s and eventually married into the wealthy Winchester family.
In 1839, Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to a working-class family. During the Civil War, at age 23, she married William Winchester, the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a rifle company.
"Winchester was quiet, which suited Sarah because she was very quiet herself," the home's historian, Janan Boehme, told Insider. "She was also a very tiny lady. She stood at about 4 feet 10 inches. She was a private person."
Over the next few decades, Sarah experienced several tragedies that would shape her life forever.
William and Sarah had one daughter, Annie, who died at just 6 weeks old. They never had any other children, and William died 15 years later from tuberculosis, in 1881 at age 43. William's fortune from the gun company was left to Sarah.
In 1885, a widowed Sarah Winchester moved to California to start a new life in a farmhouse she built on 40 acres.
At the time, newspapers were filled with advertisements, luring people to move across the country and settle in the newly incorporated California. Winchester first lived in San Francisco, but the weather bothered her arthritis. Instead, she decided to buy 40 acres of land and build a small farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley.
Winchester quickly started to remodel the home to make it bigger so that her three sisters could move in with her.
According to Boehme, Winchester had a passion for remodeling and building homes after she helped construct one back in Connecticut. Boehme said the remodels were nothing but a passion project for Winchester.
"It was something to keep her busy," Boehme said. "It helped her employ people and share her wealth that way. She just never really stopped building."
But many think that Winchester's remodels had other, more eerie motives.
There are many conspiracy theories surrounding the mansion, but the most popular lore is that Winchester went to a spiritualist and learned that she was being haunted by spirits who died at the hands of the Winchester gun company. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her.
Boehme said there is no proof of that story, but Winchester did likely practice spiritualism.
"It was quite popular during and after the Civil War," she said. "Women had lost so many of their loved ones. They were looking for some way to communicate with them."
No matter the motive, Winchester remodeled her mansion nonstop for 38 years.
Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction. It is true, however, that the remodeling of the house went on for decades. Winchester would employ around 13 workers at a time. She was known for paying her workers well above the usual rate. Oftentimes, she would buy homes for her employees' families to live in while they worked on her home.
Today, the house is not only known for its creepy history but also for its massive size.
Winchester spent $5.5 million on her 24,000-square-foot home, which has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces. There are a whopping 10,000 windows and 2,000 doors. Boehme said the house "grew organically."
Odd design elements, like stairways that lead to nowhere, also make this house so well known.
Throughout the house, you can find staircases that lead to nowhere, doors that open onto walls, and rooms with windows on the floor. The bizarre design elements feed into the theory that Winchester was trying to trap and confuse the ghosts that haunted her, but Boehme said there's a more realistic explanation. Winchester designed the home with no blueprints and no formal design experience. These design oddities may have been mistakes or a simple change of mind. However, it is unclear to this day if these choices were deliberate or accidental.
Despite the home's oddities, it's still a gorgeous example of Queen Anne Revival architecture.
The pointed spires, the wraparound porch, the shingles, and the elaborate columns are all popular features of a Queen Anne Revival, according to Boehme.
In its heyday, the home stood seven-stories tall. Today, after the 1906 earthquake badly damaged it, it's just four levels.
The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged the Winchester mansion all the way out in San Jose. After seeing the damage, Boehme said Winchester decided to remove the top few floors because it was too dangerous.
Winchester restored most of the damage inflicted by the earthquake.
Most of the house still stands, and visitors can explore it today.
Visitors enter through the carriage room, which has large double doors.
Winchester wanted the carriage room to be covered with a roof so that she could get in and out of the house without ever getting wet by the rain. The room is also notable because there is a strange door that opens onto a wall and another door that is too small to walk through.
Near the carriage room is an odd staircase that has 44 steps and seven turns ... just to get to the second floor.
While some believe this staircase was meant to confuse ghosts, Boehme said Winchester actually designed the smaller steps so that she could easily get upstairs with her arthritis.
Upstairs is Winchester's elaborately designed master bedroom, which is where she died.
Boehme describes the room as "elegant" with embossed wallpaper that surrounds the space and elaborate furniture that fills the room. Although it's beautiful, there is a darker reason why this room is so famous. This is the room where Winchester died of heart failure in 1922, at age 82.
Around the corner, you can find the first conservatory in the house.
Boehme said Winchester loved to make her home look and feel beautiful. She did that by adding some plants to the mansion, though it's unclear what kind she filled this space with.
The conservatory leads into a space known as the Hall of Fires because there are seven heat sources for the small room.
The Hall of Fires is actually three small spaces that seem to have once been separated by curtains. Strangely, there are four fireplaces and three hot air vents in this space. Boehme said it's likely that Winchester used this space as a sauna to help ease her arthritis.
Winchester loved other cultures, so a few bedrooms are Asian-inspired.
Winchester's niece lived in this room for 15 years until she got married in her 30s.
The next stop in the house is the south conservatory, which is the room with the most windows.
There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom.
One of the best rooms in the older part of the house is the Venetian dining room.
After this conservatory, visitors pass from the newer part of the house to the older part, using a small set of stairs that once acted as exterior porch steps. The Venetian room is in this part of the house.
Overall, there are three dining rooms in the house and six kitchens.
But the real showstopper in this part of the house is the decadent grand ballroom.
The ballroom is the biggest room in the house with the highest ceiling, reaching 12 feet. A fireplace mantle takes up most of one wall, while wood paneling covers most of the other walls.
While the ballroom has only two stained-glass windows, the home itself is known for them, as Winchester was famously infatuated with them.
Winchester became known for her stained-glass windows. She commissioned most of these glass pieces in 1890. Boehme said the windows share similar motifs and similar glass, but they have different types of designs. The Daisy Bedroom has daisies in its stained-glass windows, for example.
A portrait of Sarah Winchester hangs in one of the many rooms.
The house opened for tours just five months after she passed away.
Guests have also reported strange occurrences throughout the house.
Time magazine once named the Winchester house one of the most haunted places in the world.
"Outside in the front gardens of the mansion, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It was what appeared to be a bushy-haired woman staring out of one of the windows on the second floor," a guest identified as N.R. told the Winchester Mystery House staff, per Boehme. "As soon as she saw me, she turned and walked away. I originally thought nothing of it, but a few weeks later I learned that when photos were taken with these specific second-floor windows, sometimes a bushy-haired woman had appeared in the background."
Some say they've seen small orbs floating around the stables.
"After doing a behind the scenes tour that was being video recorded, we could see 'orbs' in the scene shot in the stables. That video is still accessible, and at one point you can actually see one of the orbs on my arm," a person identified as T.R. told the Winchester Mystery House staff.
Others claim to have observed ghosts in the gardens.
"I was going to clock out for the day and on the way, I saw a small woman dressed in black near the picnic gardens. It put me a little on edge, so I hurried to clock out. On my route, back through the estate, the women was not there anymore. The woman looked like Mrs. Winchester," a person identified as N.B. told the Winchester Mystery House staff.
Although historian Boehme said she has had similar paranormal experiences, she hopes people will understand that the Winchester history is more than just a ghost story.
Despite providing more realistic theories for Winchester's mysteries, Boehme admitted that she has heard her name whispered behind her back when no one else was in the room. However, she hopes people come to the house to learn more about how Winchester was a creative businesswoman.
"I'd like to think that [people] come to appreciate Sarah as more than just this eccentric, ghost-ridden, tragic figure," Boehme said. "She was actually a pretty interesting person, a smart lady, and she was good to her employees. She was never afraid of trying something new. She really was a good person."
