Justin Bieber's new concert documentary is a celebration for his fans. But is it good?
The most compelling concert movies are documentaries that give an inside look at the artist’s inner life while on tour: their struggles, their triumphs, their anxieties. Fans and casual watchers alike come away understanding these larger-than-life stars better, with a new respect for their journey.
But if that is what you are hoping to see in Justin Bieber’s new concert film, “Justin Bieber: Our World,” you might be disappointed.
The movie, which streams on Amazon Prime beginning Friday, Oct. 8, keeps things surface-level when it comes to Bieber’s life and doesn’t give fans any new insight into the pop star that they haven’t been able to glean from his social media posts.
So what does ‘Justin Bieber: Our World’ provide? Well, as a press release notes, it is “the global superstar’s first live full concert in three years.”

What is ‘Justin Bieber: Our World’ about?
On New Year’s Eve in 2020, as live shows were on pause due to the pandemic, Justin Bieber performed a full set in front of 240 socially distanced guests on the roof of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Millions of fans also tuned in to watch around the world — and put a strain on the servers with their enthusiasm.
“Justin Bieber: Our World” shows how the set came together in the final 30 days of preparation, with some roadblocks that include an integral member testing positive for COVID-19 and a rare Southern California thunderstorm that delays the set building.
Fans who already saw the concert when it livestreamed last year don’t need me to repeat the setlist. But for casual fans, you won’t be disappointed: Bieber performs some of his biggest hits over the last decade, such as “Sorry,” “What Do You Mean” and “Boyfriend.”
To his credit, he even earnestly sings the line “She woke me up daily; don't need no Starbucks” in the 2010 classic “Baby.”
But it was his 2020 song “Holy” that stole the show, from Bieber’s dedication to his wife — who came out to the balcony to acknowledge the shout-out — to the drone light show in the sky.
The coronavirus plays the villain in ‘Justin Bieber: Our World’
Perhaps the oddest thing about “Justin Bieber: Our World” is that the main character might not be Bieber, but the coronavirus pandemic.
From including multiple scenes of crew members undergoing daily COVID-19 testing to inserting news anchors’ audio clips about December being the worst month of the pandemic, the film focuses on the effects of the coronavirus on pulling off a Justin Bieber concert.
It’s safe to say that this feels dated nine months later, since COVID-19 vaccines became widely available.
Bieber’s documentary goes overboard with vlog-style footage
Though Bieber’s performance on the rooftop of the Beverly Hilton is visually stunning, the film is jarring to watch. And that is mainly due to the fact that some of the footage was taken on smartphones.
Sure, it’s amusing to see Justin Bieber vlogging (video blogging) his morning walks with Hailey Bieber and complaining that his arm hurts from holding the camera up, selfie-style. In fact, there’s no doubt that his fans want to see more of this, regardless of the video quality.
But it’s unnecessary to intersperse the movie with low-quality nighttime selfie videos from the people — yes, even Hailey Bieber — enjoying Justin Bieber’s performance on the hotel balconies. (To be fair, scenes of the crowd’s reactions are my least favorite in any concert movie. I just want to see the artist in all of their high-definition glory!)
In one particular scene, a camera follows a group out on to their hotel room balcony as Bieber slows it down with “Love Yourself.” To signify the mood change, the colors fade into monochrome. This hit-you-over-the-head style was a constant throughout “Justin Bieber: Our World.”
From ‘My World’ to ‘Our World’
I can also acknowledge that the movie, directed by Michael D. Ratner, might not be trying to win anyone over. Rather, “Our World” is a celebration for the pop singer and his massive fanbase who made it through 2020 — “a hell of a year,” Bieber calls it.
After all, the title is a nod to Justin Bieber’s first albums (his 2009 EP, “My World,” and his first studio album, “My World 2.0”).
The documentary shows that it is not just about a pop star who “was 15 when the world put me on a pedestal” (to borrow Bieber’s lyrics).
It’s about someone who has done a lot of growing up over the past decade and is grateful for the people who have stuck by him through the highs and lows. Throughout the film, Bieber hands the mic, so to speak, to his loyal behind-the-scenes team, such as choreographer Nick DeMoura and musical director Bernard "Harv" Harvey, and shows footage of his wife and his siblings.
Bieber says that, as a leader, he is “harnessing all of their gifts and working together to facilitate a show.”
There’s no doubting that the COVID-19-era concert was a feat for all involved. The film about it, however, is a let-down. “Sorry.”

Ever wanted to see Justin Bieber get his nose swabbed for a Covid test? Here’s your chance. Director Michael D. Ratner’s by-the-numbers music documentary “Justin Bieber: Our World” is strictly for the fans. While Beliebers may be titillated by the mundane behind-the-scenes goings-on of the pop brat’s pandemic-era concert on the roof of the Beverly Hilton, there’s little else to invite in new audiences. Still, as a piece of adoring fan service, “Our World” fulfills its function.
While the documentary opens with Bieber filming himself rising out of bed and taking a shower (not unlike the beginning of Netflix’s much slicker Shawn Mendes documentary), you can hardly mistake this concert documentary as some kind of unvarnished vérité record. This thing has been wiped and polished with a public-relations sheen. What the movie does offer is a beveled window into the pop star’s day-to-day with wife Hailey Bieber, and the sorts of (obviously staged) stilted conversations the pair have. (Still, their chemistry in front of the camera is way more palpable than the dying sparks floating between Mendes and Camilla Cabello in the aforementioned Netflix documentary.) “It’s so weird how everyone has had to be so meticulous about Covid, right Hailey?” says Bieber, whose net worth is nearly $300 million and whom the pandemic barely scraped.
Essentially “Our World” is an extended behind-the-scenes promo reel for Justin Bieber’s New Year’s Eve concert on the Beverly Hilton in December 2020, an event that was live-streamed globally. For the concert, Bieber did not show up in his Sunday best, but instead wore a black hoodie, khaki cargo pants, and a customary backwards cap. Even he can make schlubiness ooze a certain kind of charming cool. The setlist included plenty of his radio-friendly favorites: “All Around Me,” “Sorry,” “Boyfriend,” “Love Yourself,” “Yummy,” and more, all pandering earworms that preach a sort of cheery resilience in the face of adversity. His music has done nothing if not empower his young fans to believe in themselves, etc. “I prioritize my relationships, my family, and my wife so that I can do the things I want” is one of Bieber’s many platitudes delivered throughout the movie.
That air of positivity also extends to his security team, who throughout this documentary pledge allegiance to Bieber in ways that feel believable and not totally canned. This former YouTuber turned 27-year-old pop sensation sure is adored by all. “Justin has been told he’s the songbird of our generation,” Hailey says at one point. The movie doesn’t go anywhere near the various public scandals that have plagued Bieber over the years, from public intoxication to vandalism, but then again that would be a different kind of movie. (The Biebers also threw a hugely illegal pre-vaccine summer party in Los Angeles that had them in hot water.)
There’s one bizarre anecdote Bieber shares that encapsulates just how oblivious he is to what’s happening around him, which is that at some point, he claims, he saw a house on fire and when he started singing, the blaze went out like that. Okay then.
The drone and stage footage of the Beverly Hilton concert is occasionally transportive, including the massive “stage” (which is actually just the hotel’s roof) twilit by purple blinkering neon lights. The film ends with an emotional aria in the form of Bieber’s ballad “Anyone” (making its live debut here), which is basically an ode to what a wonderful person Hailey Bieber is and how she’s the best thing he’s “ever done.” Cutaways to her backstage corroborate that this is indeed an emotional moment for the pair. Just not so much for us.
“Justin Bieber: Our World” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video .

“I just wanted to create a night that was going to bring people together, and people could just let go and enjoy themselves,” says Justin Bieber in the opening of the new trailer for his Amazon Original Movie, Justin Bieber: Our World . “I’m excited to get back on that stage, make people smile, make people happy.”
The stage he is referring to was located at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, mounted for a special live stream concert on the most recent New Year’s Eve, marking a major return to performing after a highly-publicized hiatus from stadium concerts. The 94-minute doc covers the month-long prep and logistics of mounting a unique production for 240 guests (and the world online) as well as all of the other new things in Bieber’s life, as a husband and a reformed pop star.
Directed by frequent Bieber collaborator Michael D. Ratner, the film was produced by Ratner, Scott Ratner, Kfir Goldberg, Andy Mininger with executive producers Scooter Braun, Allison Kaye, Scott Manson and Jennifer McDaniels. See the full trailer below. The film hits Prime Video on Oct. 8.

What can you expect from Justin Bieber: Our World ?
Justin Bieber returns to the stage in Justin Bieber: Our World , a documentary film that features the singer-songwriter sensation’s first full concert performance in 3 years, which took place during a New Year’s Eve performance atop the roof of the Beverly Hilton in 2020. The film is directed by Michael D. Ratner, who has served as executive producer on many of Justin Bieber’s previous documentary films, series and video shorts, and also served as executive producer on Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil , which released earlier this year. Dancing with the Devil was a very intimate look into Lovato’s life, so it’s likely that Our World will delve beyond the concert footage and provide an intimate glimpse into Justin Bieber’s life, and the events leading up to his concert.
The trailer on Bieber’s Instagram featured a shot of Justin approaching the tiered balconies that hold the crowd at the Beverly Hilton, and a brief audio clip of him singing the song “All Around Me,” which debuted in 2020 as part of his album, Changes .

‘Justin Bieber: Our World’ Review: A Pop Star Enshrouded
Alternating like clockwork between live numbers and soft insight dulls this documentary’s rhythm.
By Chris Azzopardi
Justin Bieber’s life beyond pop stardom — namely his personal post-teen transformation — is almost completely obscured in “Justin Bieber: Our World.” The film opens with his supportive wife Hailey in bed with him just before he plays a New Year’s Eve gig in 2020, his first full concert in three years.
But this show is different because it has to be: It takes place on the rooftop of the Beverly Hilton Hotel as Covid-19 cases were surging in Los Angeles. The doc encapsulates the shared exhilaration of watching Bieber perform during this socially distanced concert spectacle, but it’s only for the biggest Beliebers. And even they, too, may wish it didn’t play out in such tedious mechanical fashion. Alternating like clockwork between live numbers and soft insight dulls the film’s rhythm, diminishing the excitement it’s going for as it counts down the days to showtime.
The director Michael D. Ratner only grazes the surface of a newly grounded and grateful Bieber; the star’s heartthrob-to-husband evolution is safely teased out in self-captured vlogs and calculated crew member testimonials. Mostly, Ratner stays fixed on pandemic-era concert planning, from daily swab tests to an infected crew member.
Another obstacle comes in the form of bad weather just before the show — anything, it seems, to avoid a deeper, more personal look at Bieber (though we do learn he was a fan of the mustache, just not in certain pictures). If “Our World” has anything to say, it’s that the chaos caused by a global health crisis can be a guarded pop star’s greatest diversion.
Justin Bieber: Our World Rated PG. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes. Watch on Amazon.

Hailey, the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, has modeled for dozens of high-end fashion brands and founded a skincare brand called Rhode in 2022. She previously spoke to GQ about dating a world-famous pop star and the public scrutiny that comes with it.
“Recently, everybody was like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s pregnant,’ and that’s happened to me multiple times before,” she told GQ. “There is something that’s disheartening about, damn, I can’t be bloated one time and not be pregnant? It would be a lie if I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I don’t give a shit.’”

Hailey Bieber is expecting her first child with Justin Bieber, the celebrity couple announced Thursday. The ‘Baby’ singer and the model were married in 2018.

In response to actor Stephen Baldwin celebrating his daughter’s exciting news, Mallette wrote : “Congratulations Grandpa! WE ARE GONNA HAVE THE CUTEST GRAND-BABIES EVER!”
The comment led to speculation that the singer and the Rhode skincare founder potentially had twins in utero because of Mallette’s use of the plural “grand-babies.” Mallette later clarified that was not the case.
“No not twins lol I wish. I just mean in general. Hopefully they will have more than one eventually. They will make beautiful babies whenever they have them. One is enough for now,” she wrote.
Justin Bieber: What if Hailey Baldwin is the girl he marries? ‘I just don’t want to hurt her’
Justin Bieber could marry Hailey Baldwin one day, and for that reason he’s not loving the idea of labeling her as his girlfriend before he embarks on a world tour for a year and a half.
Feb. 11, 2016
A rep for Hailey confirmed to People that the maker of a doughnut-inspired lip treatment is just over six months pregnant. A source told the outlet that the Biebers are already decorating their nursery and have chosen a name.
“Everyone is excited for them,” the source said. “They will be great parents, and Justin will be super involved. This will be the next important project for him. He’s so excited to raise his baby.”
Justin, 30, and Hailey (née Baldwin), 27, revealed the pregnancy in joint Instagram posts Thursday. Their videos and photos showed the “Baby” hitmaker taking photos of Hailey, who wore a white lace gown and cradled her belly in the images, which included plenty of close-ups of the model’s growing bump.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cue up his 2010 megahit “Baby.” Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber (nee Baldwin) are expecting their first child together — and have renewed their vows.
A representative for Hailey Bieber confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that the model is just over six months pregnant.
The couple announced the news on their respective Instagram pages with corresponding posts. Both begin with a short, romantic video clip of the couple kissing. Hailey Bieber is draped in white lace; baby bump prominent in the sheer, form-fitting fabric. It is followed up with a photo shoot of Justin Bieber photographing his wife. In each caption, they’ve tagged one another.
In a press release, fashion house Yves Saint Laurent says the video and photoshoot are from the Biebers’ vow renewal ceremony on Thursday in Hawaii.
In 2018, the Biebers confirmed their long-rumored marriage on Instagram, when the musician posted a picture of the pair holding hands and captioned it, “My wife is awesome.” Hailey changed her username from “Baldwin” to “Bieber” at the same time. They were engaged in the Bahamas earlier that year, after about a month of dating.
In addition to modeling, Hailey Bieber is the founder of a skincare line, Rhode. Justin Bieber, who rose to fame as a teenager, is a Grammy winner with eight No. 1 songs under his belt, including “Sorry,” “Love Yourself,” “What Do You Mean?” and “Despacito,” featuring Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. His last album, “Justice,” was released in 2021.

Justin and Hailey Bieber have announced they’re expecting their first baby.
Despite months of break-up rumours, the A-list couple took to Instagram Friday morning with a sweet video of the pair celebrating their pregnancy.
In the retro-inspired clip, it appeared as though the Biebers were renewing their vows after first getting married in 2018.
A ‘celebrant’ was present at one point, with a pregnant Hailey seen reading from a sheet of notes.
Elsewhere in a series of photos, Hailey, 27, cradled her growing baby bump in a lace white dress with matching headdress, while Justin, 30, could be seen taking photos of his wife.
Famous friends flooded the comment section of the post, with Kim Kardashian writing, “I love you guys soooo much!!!”
It comes just days after Justin, who has taken a lengthy break from his music career, sparked concern among followers when he posted several photos of himself crying .
Justin and Hailey have been the subject of swirling tabloid reports they were headed for a split, though a source close to the couple recently squashed the speculation.
“There’s no divorce and no truth to that whatsoever. They are very, very happy,” a source told People in April.
The rumours stemmed from Hailey’s father, actor Stephen Baldwin , re-sharing an Instagram post asking fans to “say a little prayer” for the two.
