10 Best Electric Campervans For The Futuristic Vandweller

Electric campervans are making tracks on the vanlife scene in a big way. This is in no small part due to rise nomads and tiny home aficionados, who often list sustainability as a driving cause for their alternative lifestyles.

But eco-friendly doesn’t just mean guilt free; there are practical reasons to opt for an electric camper . Sure, electric charging stations aren’t quite ubiquitous yet, but they’re getting there. But with battery technology improving leaps and bounds over the past years, functional range has vastly increased–allowing you to go on your off-grid adventure without turning to a gas-guzzling Goliath.

Ready to start your 21st-century vandweller life? Take a look at our list of the best electric van conversions on the market!

Top Electric Campervans to fit your style and budget

The days where building your own tiny home involved sandbags and clay are (mostly) over. Now, you can roam the earth like a proper digital nomad in your kitted-out electric campervan.

Of course, they’re not all the same–far from it! Below, we briefly review 10 of the best campervan conversions which run on electricity

1. Volkswagen Type 20

A white and black VW split screen bus; not what you might expect to see on a list of electric campervans.

I bet you weren’t expecting this to come up first now, were you?

Look, we’ve all spent a lot of time drooling (or fuming) over the new VW Buzz , which will soon be hitting a dusty highway or bustling city near you. But while we’ve been getting to grips with the new evolution of the world’s most iconic brand, something else has been lurking in the background.

The genius minds behind the classic Volkswagen Bus Camper have been working on a little beauty on the down-low–something that might make you feel a little bit like a kid on Christmas Eve.

It’s a glorious range of electric campervans that encompass all of the incredible features of the bus that we know and love, but with a new electric system that doesn’t require any tinkering with.

electric travel van

The Volkswagen Type 20 range of electric campervans will hit the ground running with 120bhp and 173lb-ft of torque. That’s a serious amount of punch for such a classic looking vehicle.

Speaking of looks, the inside of this camper conversion has had a major uplift too. You’ll find futuristic and psychedelic fixtures and fittings in both the cab and the living area. This is a nice way of paying homage to both the new modern elements that help to keep this machine nice and green; and the far-out vibes from the summer of love that made this camper what it is today.

We’ve cleverly left out a lot of details about this camper van. If you want to read more and see more pictures, then you’ll have to head over to our dedicated article on this VW Electric Campervan !

2. Fiat Ducato

electric travel van

Fiat have finally brought out an electric version of their incredibly popular camper van base, the Ducato. From professional builds to DIY dream homes , the Ducato provides people with a sturdy base vehicle to make their alternative living dreams come true.

You might not initially be able to tell, but the Ducato is the vehicle of choice for so many modified campervan models on the road today. Now it’s ready to become one of the largest eco-friendly rolling-homes in your neighbourhood.

electric travel van

Here’s a few stats to whet your appetite.

For starters, you can say goodbye to the notion of electric campervans only being able to travel to the local shop before running out our juice. The batteries in this beast produce somewhere between 130 and 230 miles (around 220 to 360km) per charge, depending on the model you choose. With electric car charging points in so many places these days, you’ll be able to cover some serious ground.

These electric campervans will have a top speed of just over 60mph, which is fast enough when you’re carrying your entire world around with you. And crucially, the Ducato will still have all the space and features that has made it rival the Sprinter camper van as the most popular conversion bed on the road.

3. Nissan Pop-Top Electric Campervans

electric campers

Weekend warriors around the world rejoice! These Nissan Electric Pop Tops, otherwise known as the NV200 and the NV300, are the perfect vehicles for a day trip to the beach with the family, or an overnight stay in your favourite forest location.

Strictly speaking, the NV200 is the ‘fully-electric’ camper out of the two while the NV300 is a hybrid. So if you want to go fully eco-friendly, then the smaller build will be the one for you.

electric travel van

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the stats and facts associated with the NV200. This all-electric, emission-free camper can travel up to 124 miles on a single charge, which is pretty impressive for such a nippy little motorhome.

It’s also quite an affordable camper , coming in at a respectable £15,000 for the basic unfurnished version. That’s a great starting price if you’re thinking about doing this van up in your own image. Otherwise, you can shell out an extra £5,000 and have somebody do it all for you.

Each camper has everthing you might need to live comfortably in the wilderness, including a kitchen with enough room for a whole range of cooking accessories . The pop top provides that much-needed space for standing and cooking, and lets extra light into the living space.

If you love the pop top but already have a ride, alternatively you can check out these pop up trailers .

4. Iridium E-Mobil Motorhome

The Iridium E-Mobil could well be the biggest motor on the electric campervans scene. It looks like a standard tourer, but it's a much different story under the bonnet!

Luxury RVs might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying the brilliance of the next vehicle on our electric campervans list.

The Iridium E-Mobil Motorhome charges while you sleep, leaving you to crunch those miles the next morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. It works by combining a synchronous motor with a heavy-duty lithium iron phosphate battery (which we cover in depth in our camper van batteries article), plus an ingenious battery management system.

The E-Mobil can do around 200km with ease. Further bolstering your range is flexible-anywhere charging, plugging into standard wall sockets, standard charging stations, or even 50kw fast-charge stations alike. The exact time to full charge varies depending on which method you go for, but in any case it’ll be ready to go when you wake up in the morning!

The fact that such a big motorhome can be fully electric is amazing. And, if the Iridium E-Mobil can do it, then maybe we might see larger overland vehicles like the EarthRoamer Camper going the same way in the next few years. After all, having extra space to move around freely and to implement bulkier items like fridges, ovens, and sofas into your conversion really lets you stay off the grid in comfort for longer.

Sure, it’s a bulkier and slower option than the VW Type 20 or the Nissan NV200. But if you prefer motorhomes to panel vans, then it might be time to start saving up for an E-Mobil.

(For all of you hungry fact-finders out there, the E-Mobil is based on the Bela Edition P69 and will launch with a price tag around €169k.)

5. Dalbury E-Electric

electric travel van

You might have expected to find the Dalbury E-Electric in our best electric campervans list, and rightly so. How many other vehicles can boast an 80% charge after 30 minutes, a running cost of just £0.02 per mile? Or, which come with a home charging kit pre-installed for free?

electric travel van

Hillside Leisure know what it takes to make a campervan worthy of the ultimate off grid adventure . So it’s no surprise that the Dalbury E-Electric comes with the most equipment out of all of the electric campervans in our list.

E-Electric comes complete with an all- important air conditioning system for when you’re holidaying in hotter climates . It even manages to house a 39 litre fridge that hooks directly up to the 12V electrical system. There’s also a solar panel and a rearview camera, so you don’t scratch or bump your eco-house as your pull up into that perfect parking spot.

We can’t say enough good things about these all-electric campervans from Hillside Leisure. From the nifty pop-top to the cleverly designed fold – out table and comfy sleeping area, this small camper has everything for big adventures on the road.

Hillside Leisure have proven that camping doesn’t have to increase your carbon footprint. So if climate change keeps you awake at night, then grab your phone and order a Dalbury E-Electric to start cruising with a guilt-free conscience!

6. MOIA Electric Van

MOIA electric campervans

The MOIA is a unique electric van. While it’s not purpose-built to live in, it certainly could be!

MOIA is a German Uber-like company, building electric vehicles for those who want both luxury and space. Thus, they created this Transformer-looking van, which we can’t help but love.

We just wish MOIA took interest in the camping market instead of the taxi market. Imagine that, a batch of high-end campervans that you could rent out for the weekend. Now that’s what we want! Plus these things will look the part with a double bed, some technology and a kitchen in there.

7. Mercedes Sprinter

electric campers mercedes sprinter

The Mercedes Sprinter is by far one of the most popular panel vans of choice by van lifers, but now it’s getting a serious upgrade by Mercedes themselves.

They’ve noticed a bigger demand from campers, and have begun working on a fully electric camper, which can be controlled by an app. There’s no news on an official launch date; but they want you to be able to set the temperature, open up the awning and even manage all of your mechanical problems via an app too.

This is something we can get behind, and something we think will be more common in the next five or so years.

8. Rivian RT1 Electric Truck

electric travel van

We had the privilege of seeing the Rivian R1T at this year’s Overland Expo . The model we saw was kitted-out with a tent on the back, storage underneath, and a pull-out kitchen for cooking on the go. One of the neatest features we saw was the extra compartments under the back seats, which allow for cool gadgets of for even more storage.

We can see this truck teaming up with an awesome rig on the back, becoming one of worlds first electric truck campers. It can do up to 400miles on one charge, and it can hit 60 mph in just 3 seconds… Clearly, this thing is VERY powerful.

9. Tesla Camper

tesle dreamcase

This one is not official but it still works. The Tesla is becoming a very popular choice of vehicle for those living in the city, but one company called dreamcase has now turned your average Tesla into camper using a transformable bed.

And because of the Tesla’s swing-up doors and open boot, the bed can actually come with some cracking views. Admittedly there’s no pop-top, no kitchen and no toilet but it’s an affordable way to camp in your Tesla for a short period of time.

10. Neuron EV Electric Truck

electric travel van

Ok, so the last of our electric campervans might not actually be a campervan per se, but it would make an incredible conversion vehicle. And besides, it has one of the greatest front seats of all time!

How would you like to save the planet by driving a three-seater truck with a large panoramic windscreen and a single Jean-Luc Picard style captain’s chair? If the answer is “make it so”, then keep reading!

Neuron EV Electric Truck cockpit - this is where the magic happens. One seat in the very centre of the vehicle gives the driver an incredible range of sight

Neuron has a company ethos about creating safe and reliable vehicles for their customers to drive, so don’t be under any impressions that you’ll be hurtling through the forest at 5-zillion miles an hour in this truck.

The exterior profile looks a lot like a Ford F-350 crossed with a light show, which can only be a good thing when you’re pulling up to a parking spot in the dead of night. The bodywork also looks super smooth and sleek; it could be the most aerodynamic truck on earth (maybe Neuron could use that as their marketing slogan?)

RECLINING CHAIRS!

The doors open in the classic GMC style to reveal a spacious interior with two luxury reclining chairs. Who needs a bed when you can sleep on one of these, right?

Multiple cupboards line the sides of the interior space and look as though they would be big enough to fit camping gear and more inside, and the truck is more than sturdy enough to be able to house a pop-up roof tent or tent awning. This could be an interesting conversion project, just don’t get rid of those amazing chairs!

Converging where the open road meets the great outdoors, camper vans are popular for the convenience, open-road freedom, and immersion in nature they afford—but they’re heavy emitters.

“There are tens of millions of tons of CO2 emitted from RVers in the USA alone every year,” says Sam Shapiro, CEO of Detroit-based electric camper van company Grounded. Growing awareness around such climate impacts grew while Shapiro lived in what he called a “gas guzzler” fossil fuel–powered camper van in 2020, largely motivating him to found his firm.

Camper van life, at its core, is a road trip in an oversize vehicle; larger vehicles tend toward poorer gas mileage and higher CO2 emissions. As the global climate crisis worsens, transportation accounts for over a quarter of America’s carbon emissions , with most of that stemming from on-road vehicles.

Yet the marketplace for camper vans and other larger recreational vehicles (RVs) is booming, spurred by both trending #vanlife visibility on social media, as well as increased interest during the pandemic’s onset , when travelers sought alternative forms of tourism that carried less perceived risk to personal safety.

A segment of that growth is poised to be electrified, with the first batch of electric camper van concept vehicles and custom-build conversions now emerging. Big-name manufacturers like Winnebago, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Thor are among those lining up to revolutionize the American road trip.

“The future of all vehicles is probably electric,” says Kraig Becker, digital editor at RV.com/ RV Magazine . However, he notes, “The electric camper van space is in its very early stages right now, with a handful of manufacturers exploring options and testing prototypes, but with very few actually available to purchase.”

Becker adds, “The good news is, the three main platforms used to build camper vans—the Mercedes Sprinter , Ford Transit , and Ram ProMaster —all have electric versions available now. That should allow more brands to begin testing and building e-RVs, opening the door for more models to hit the market in the near future.”

The camper van space has long been occupied by do-it-yourself individuals and smaller companies that turn out custom camper van conversions from standardized vans. Indeed, smaller startups like Grounded, with vans based on the chassis of a Ford E-Transit, have already begun sales in the United States.

Advances in battery technology are also helping to drive the electrified market, as are travel trends toward eco-consciousness and more familiarity with electric vehicles—which is especially true of younger generations, says Becker.

“As RV owners have started to trend younger in age, there is also a movement afoot to camp in a more eco-friendly, sustainable fashion. Younger buyers are definitely more interested in camping off-grid, but in a way that is easier on the planet,” he says.

Apart from the clear environmental benefits of eliminating tailpipe emissions, cost savings—with electric camper van batteries recharged at more affordable (or free) electric charging points rather than at a gas pump—is another incentive.

“These large internal combustion engine vehicles tend to be gas guzzlers, so one spends a small fortune on gas on a typical road trip,” says Shapiro.

Other leading reasons to cross over include quieter electric motors and cheaper maintenance compared to gas-powered models, as well as the ability to camp off-grid. But hurdles to widespread adoption of the electric camper vans remain.

“The charging infrastructure needs to be upgraded, EVs need to be able to charge more quickly, and manufacturers have to find ways to extend the range. EVs are also very costly at the moment, which puts them out of reach for a lot of people,” explains Becker, who says these issues should begin to resolve over the next few years, as technology improves and manufacturing ramps up . While Becker says that charging time for electric vans is not too different from that of electric cars, the range—or the distance the van can travel before needing a charge—is less, falling between just 100 to a targeted 300 miles for these first-generation electric vans.

Here’s a glimpse at the future of sustainable travel with five pioneering, clean-driving camper vans that are rolling out to redefine the #vanlife landscape. (Keep in mind that several of these vehicles are still in their concept phase; accordingly, prices and production dates are pending for most of them.)

A green Grounded G1 inside a garage

Grounded G1

As of April 2023, Detroit-based startup Grounded, run by former SpaceX and Tesla engineers, was the first significant electric camper van company to successfully bring its product to the U.S. market. Its G1 vehicles , based on Ford E-Transit platforms, offer customizable modular, Scandinavian-inspired interiors, with sustainably sourced birch finishes and high roofing. Other features include smart, app-based technology (including remote-start HVAC control) and solar panels that allow for off-grid adventuring. The company plans to offer its G2—which will more than double the existing range from 108 to 250 miles, this fall. Rates from $125,000; groundedrvs.com

Winnebago eRV2

American RV giant Winnebago is planning to enter the electric camper van market via its all-electric eRV2 prototype that’s likewise based on the Ford E-Transit chassis. Touting a modern design scheme with sustainably sourced and recycled materials, the company claims the van’s advanced vehicle battery system, bolstered by solar panels, will be powerful enough to allow for off-grid camping for up to a week. Still in its concept phase, the model, with a current range of 100 to 115 miles, is being actively tested in the field to fine-tune the van’s final design. Though unofficial, rumors are for the eRV2s to hit the production line as soon as next year. winnebago.com

Volkswagen ID. Buzz

Volkswagen’s iconic Microbus vans helped birth America’s camper van culture back in the 1960s. So it’s fitting that it is back on the scene for the dawn of the electrified age, with the German automaker’s highly anticipated ID. Buzz van—a throwback to its hippie-favorite days—readying to enter the U.S. market later in 2024. Where “old-school cool meets new-school fuel,” the playful, retro-inspired vans will feature bold two-tone exterior paint, recycled materials, spacious configurations, ambient lighting, massaging front seats, a sunroof, and a potential range of more than 260 miles. Furthermore, the company has already announced plans to produce an ID. California camper van for the European market, likely for 2025, though no word yet on whether or when it would be distributed stateside. In the meantime, expect to see custom camper van conversions from third-party companies and individuals popping up around the ID. Buzz in the very near future; Volkswagen also plans to sell custom camping accessories for the Buzz in the United States. vw.com

Thor Vision Vehicle

U.S.-based Thor Industries, the world’s largest RV manufacturer (and parent company of Airstream), is pursuing its Thor Vision Vehicle , an electric camper van that’s advertising a “best in class” 300-mile range (thanks to a combo battery pack and fuel-cell range extender) and tech-heavy features like custom app-based controls, a solar-paneled roof, voice-controlled amenities, and a “digital cockpit” for drivers, boasting a bevy of helpful apps. Touting a sleek design and plush modern interiors, Thor’s vehicle is built on an exclusive electric chassis developed in partnership with American automotive company Roush. A Thor rep tells us the concept vehicle is meant to be a “learning platform that will inform how the Thor family of companies create electric motorhomes and trailers,” so the jury’s still out on what form the company’s first-generation electric camper van will ultimately take. thorindustries.com

Mercedes-Benz Van.EA

German automaker Mercedes-Benz is launching its first electric eSprinter vans in the United States later in 2023, with a range of up to 250 miles. The brand already introduced small electric camper vans exclusively to Europe , but has now teased plans to bring a new line of premium mid- and full-size electric camper vans to the USA for the first time. Planned to debut in 2026 under its next-generation Van Electric Architecture (Van.EA) battery-electric vehicle platform, most details remain under wraps. In the meantime, be on the lookout for custom-van conversions based on Mercedes’s eSprinter to arrive from independent companies soon. media.mbusa.com

2024 Brightdrop Zevo 600 side profile

14 New Electric van models coming to the U.S. (2024-2026)

Update: ‘USPS Electric Mail Truck,’ ‘Ford E-Transit LFP battery variant,’ ‘Mercedes-Benz eSprinter,’ and ‘Ram ProMaster EV’ updated and ‘Kia PV5’ and ‘Kia PV7’ added.

Electrification in the automobile industry extends not just to hatchbacks and lifestyle electric pickup trucks but to commercial vehicles as well. The electric van segment especially got a lot of attention after Amazon invested more than $440 million in Rivian, with Ford having invested nearly $1.2 billion in the company, too, despite having its own model in the E-Transit.

Given that the average delivery van covers less than 160 miles a day, which is well within the reach of current battery technologies, fleet operators and e-commerce majors are transitioning to electric vans, and here are some options.

Tesla Robovan

Tesla Robovan teaser 2023 Investor Day

After the Semi and Cybertruck , Tesla’s next large commercial model launch could be a van. On July 7, 2022, Elon Musk, co-founder and CEO, Tesla, asked his Twitter followers if the company should make a ‘Robovan’ that’s highly configurable and used to move people and transport cargo. Maybe Tesla could offer it with an optional solar power canopy that extends both sides and triples the roof area as an option, Musk said in a follow-up post on Twitter a few hours later.

At the 2023 Investor Day, Tesla showed a large boxy vehicle under a cover in a presentation slide. The outline seemed like that of a high-roof vehicle and could very well be the Tesla Robovan.

Tesla has long considered adding a van to its lineup. The company is “definitely” going to make an electric van at some point, Musk said during the Q4 2020 earnings conference call on January 27, 2021. A month later, during The Joe Rogan Experience podcast (listen on Spotify ), he said the solar roof of such a model could add around 30 miles of range per day.

Before the Tesla Robovan , the next-gen Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Robotaxi look like priorities. So, Tesla’s electric van could easily be 3-4 years from commercialization. The Master Plan Part 3 (pdf) document Tesla released on April 5, 2023, suggests the company expects the Robovan and the Cybertruck together to record 300 million units in cumulative sales.

USPS Electric Mail Truck

Oshkosh USPS Mail Truck (NGDV) front three quarter

Oshkosh Defense is developing a ‘Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV)’ for the United States Postal Service (USPS). While new companies like Arrival, BrightDrop, and Rivian are reinventing vans with attractive, futuristic designs, the Oshkosh Corporation subsidiary has done something strange! A duck-billed big box is how we’d describe it!

The Oshkosh NGDV will be aimed at not only making delivery operations eco-friendly but also easing them for the carriers. Features like front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera system, blind spot warning system, automatic electronic parking brake, airbag, etc. will ensure safety. A surveillance camera will be installed for security, while AC and a walk-in cargo area with cab access will provide the driver comfort and convenience.

The Oshkosh NGDV will be available in an internal combustion engine variant and a pure-electric variant. There’s no word on the specifications yet, not even targeted figures. Oshkosh Defense started production of the NGDV’s test units (in Spartanburg, South Carolina) in 2023. During its Q4 2023 earnings conference call on January 30, 2024, it revealed that low-volume production (presumably of the final version) will commence in April 2024. The company expects to operate at full-rate production in 2026.

According to a report Reuters filed on May 1, 2023, USPS has revealed in a court filing that it expects to get the first units of its next-gen delivery vehicles in June 2024, which would mark a nine-month delay in dispatches. It expects to procure at least 60,000 units of the NGDV, of which a minimum of 45,000 will be electric by 2028.

Ford E-Transit LFP battery variant

On February 8, 2022, Ford started shipping the E-Transit electric van to customers from its Kansas City Assembly Plant. Prices of the E-Transit in the U.S. start at USD 45,995 (excl. USD 1,895 destination charges). The E-Transit was the best-selling electric vans in the U.S. in 2022, with 6,500 units delivered. In 2023, sales increased by 18% to 7,672 units. Once again, the E-Transit was the no.1 electric van in our market.

Ford E-Transit electric van

Available in various configurations (three roof heights, three lengths, and as a Cargo Van, Chassis Cab, and Cutaway), the E-Transit uses an 89 kWh lithium-ion battery and a single permanent-magnet motor that produces 198 kW (266 hp) and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. On a full charge, it can cover 159 miles (on the low-roof cargo van configuration).

Ford is doubling down on LFP batteries, seeing them as a highly cost-effective solution to make EVs more accessible. The company uses them in select Mustang Mach-E configurations and plans to use them in select F-150 Lightning configurations from early 2024. It will invest USD 3.5 billion in the construction of America’s first automaker-backed LFP battery plant, located in Marshall, Michigan.

On July 21, 2022, during Ford’s EV Update Conference call, Lisa Drake, who’s now the vice president for Ford Model e EV industrialization, said that “you could see LFP maybe in the future being on an E-Transit.” We think that should happen the latest by 2026, by when Ford may have learned enough from the Mustang Mach-E LFP and F-150 Lightning LFP and will have kicked off in-house production at the Marshall plant.

A UAW document has revealed that Ford plans to build an all-new electric van at its Ohio Assembly Plant, as per a report Carscoops published on November 1, 2023. We think the unannounced electric van may be the second-gen E-Transit.

Rivian Amazon Prime Van

The Amazon electric van is built on the R1’s skateboard chassis, albeit at a lower cost (using a lot of steel). There are three versions of the Rivian EDV: Rivian EDV 500 , Rivian EDV 700, and Rivian EDV 900, named as per their respective load capacities. According to a report from autoblog , it will be available in single-motor FWD, dual-motor FWD, and dual-motor AWD configurations.

Rivian EDV 700 Amazon EDV 700 front three quarter

Amazon deployed Rivian-sourced electric delivery vans in the U.S. in the Summer of 2022, and as of October 18, 2023, it has more than 10,000 units of those models on the road. The company uses them in more than 1,800 cities across the country and has delivered more than 260 million packages.

Amazon plans to acquire a total of 100,000 EDVs from Rivian, so a large part of the order is still pending. Rivian has revised its terms & conditions with Amazon so that it can sell commercial vans to other customers, Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe announced during the company’s Q3 earnings conference call on November 7, 2023.

In an SEC filing on October 1, 2021, Rivian had revealed the following specifications of the EDV:

Rivian has started using an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack in the EDV, which has helped it reduce cost and maybe even improve supply stability. “In the case of our commercial vans, 100% of the commercial vans are moving to LFP pack configuration,” RJ Scaringe, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Rivian, said during the company’s Q1 2023 earnings conference call on May 9, 2022.

Following the aforementioned change in the agreement with Amazon, Rivian has released a modified version of the Electric Delivery Van (EDV) for other customers, simply called ‘Commercial Van.’ The Rivian Commercial Van features LED headlights, a curbside sliding door, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, two wireless charging pads, a 360-degree camera system, three airbags, automatic emergency braking, and various advanced driver assistance systems.

The Rivian Commercial Van is available in 500 and 700 versions, which are equivalent to the Amazon EDV’s 500 and 700 versions. The Rivian Delivery 500 Commercial Van has a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,350 lbs. and a payload capacity of 2,734 lbs. Rivian estimates it can travel up to 161 miles on a full charge.

The Rivian Delivery 700 Commercial Van has a higher gross vehicle weight rating of 9,500 lbs. but a lower payload capacity of 2,513 lbs. The 700 version’s advantage over the 500 version is a significantly bigger cargo area. Its estimated range is slightly lower – 153 miles.

The Rivian Commercial Van is priced at USD 83,000 for the 500 version and USD 87,000 for the 700 version. Rivian indicates that both the Delivery 500 Commercial Van and Delivery 700 Commercial Van could be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to USD 7,500. Deliveries are expected to commence in early 2024 on a limited scale.

Brightdrop Zevo 400/BrightDrop EV410

BrightDrop also offers a smaller model called BrightDrop Zevo 400 . Originally announced as the BrightDrop EV410, it is designed for smaller and more frequent deliveries. It is less than 20 feet long, and its wheelbase measures just over 150 inches. It offers more than 400 cu. ft. of cargo area (11,327 liters).

BrightDrop EV410 or Brightdrop Zevo 400 front three quarter

The Brightdrop electric van models ride on a dedicated EV architecture while making use of GM’s Ultium battery technology and drive technology (the same technology found on its passenger vehicles).

Verizon is the Zevo 400’s first customer, and the popular cellular carrier will induct the vans into its service fleet. On January 1, 2022, Brightdrop announced that Walmart has signed an agreement to reserve 5,000 units of the EV600 and EV410 electric vans. In its Q4 2021 earnings conference call, GM said that it has received more than 25,000 reservations for BrightDrop cargo vans. Merchants Fleet has ordered 5,400 units of the Zevo 400.

Production of the Zevo 400 will take place alongside the Zevo 600 at GM’s CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll (Ontario), Canada, likely starting in Spring 2024. On June 30, 2022, former BrightDrop President and CEO Travis Katz told Bloomberg that the company plans to have an annual production capacity of more than 50,000 EVs at this plant by 2025. The Zevo 400 was also part of the interaction, with Katz saying that this is a great vehicle, particularly for uses like grocery delivery, where customers do shorter runs for delivering all the packages.

Bollinger Deliver-E

Bollinger Deliver-E applications

Bollinger, Michigan-based startup, is working on a commercial electric van, called ‘Deliver-E.’ Expected to be based on a simplified version of the Bollinger skateboard platform (Chass-E), the Deliver-E would be built in multiple wheelbase sizes and configurations with battery specifications of 70 kWh, 105 kWh, 140 kWh, 175 kWh, and 210 kWh, in a front-wheel drive layout. Bollinger has not announced when production will start. It is still looking for a manufacturing partner, especially one that has experience in making van bodies as it does not plan on making the body itself, the company’s CEO Robert Bollinger said in a statement.

Bollinger Motors has outsourced manufacturing of its Class 3-6 platform platforms and chassis cab commercial vehicles to Roush Industries. Bollinger Motors will provide Roush Industries with the parts for assembly, which will conduct the further process at its Livonia facility in Michigan. Production of the Bollinger Deliver-E van could also take place at the same production site. Southern California-based EV company Mullen Automotive holds a 60% stake in Bollinger since September 8, 2022.

Mercedes-Benz eSprinter

2024 Mercedes eSprinter front three quarter

The 2024 eSprinter is available in the U.S. as a long-wheelbase cargo van with a high roof, a load capacity of 488 cu. ft., and a payload capacity of 2,624 lbs. The new electric van has a GVWR of 9,370 lbs. and a GCWR of 11,023 lbs.

A permanent magnet synchronous motor, offered in 100 kW (134 hp)/400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) and 150 kW (201 hp)/400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) variants, powers the 2024 eSprinter. The electric van has a top speed of 75 mph.

The U.S.-spec model has the largest battery pack in the line-up, with an energy storage capacity of 113 kWh. However, this battery pack consists of lithium iron phosphate cells. The 113 kWh battery pack consists supports charging at up to 9.6 kW (AC)/115 kW (DC). Using a Level 2 AC fast-charger, a full (0-100%) charging session takes about 12.5 hours. At a DC fast-charging station, 10 to 80 percent SoC takes ~42 minutes.

The officially expected range is 273 miles, but that’s according to WLTP. The EPA-estimated range could be between 210 and 220 miles.

The 2024 Mercedes eSprinter has been priced at USD 71,886 in the 134-horsepower variant and USD 75,316 in the 201-horsepower variant. Manufactured locally in Charleston, South Carolina, the new electric van has started arriving at U.S. dealers.

Mercedes premium vans

Mercedes electric commercial vans VAN.EA platform

Mercedes-Benz Vans has confirmed new pure-electric premium commercial vans in the mid-size and large segments. The company will build the electric commercial vans on a new VAN.EA-C platform, tailor-made for various configurations and applications. The upcoming platform will be designed and engineered from the ground up for purpose-built electric vehicles. The dedicated approach ensures that the vans using this platform will offer superior spaciousness and efficiency compared to electric vans that employ modified internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle platforms.

Running MB.OS vehicle software, the new electric Mercedes vans for commercial use will be highly digital. They will support SAE Level 2 autonomous driving right from launch. Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to begin offering SAE Level 4 autonomous driving in them by 2030. Courier, express and parcel delivery (CEP) operators, hospitals, roadside assistance companies, and many other service providers will find the new electric Mercedes vans suitable for their work.

The first electric Mercedes premium van for commercial use will likely be launched in 2025.

Canoo electric vans

Canoo lifestyle delivery vehicle.

Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle Delivery front three quarter

The Canoo Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (LDV) is a delivery-specific trim of the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle. The purpose-built EV sits on the company’s modular electric platform, which is a skateboard chassis. It’s just as big as a compact car, but with interior space comparable to a large SUV.

The Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle has an 80 kWh battery pack, which Canoo expects to deliver a range of 250 miles. It offers a cargo volume of 120 cubic feet and a payload capacity of 1,543 lbs. Customers can order it in single-seat and two-seat versions.

Speaking of customers, Walmart had an agreement with Canoo to purchase 4,500 electric delivery vehicles by the end of 2023, beginning with the LDV. Canoo has delivered a few LDV units to Walmart, and the latter will use them under a pilot project to help Canoo refine and finalize its custom configuration.

On November 13, 2023, Canoo announced that it had dispatched the first batch of the LDV to Oklahoma as part of its agreement with the state government to supply up to 1,000 vehicles. There’s no official update on the start of deliveries of Walmart’s LDV, though.

Canoo Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle

Canoo MPDV

Despite a series of high-level exits in its workforce, Canoo still plans to bring out the MPDV (Multi-purpose Delivery Vehicle) for the 2024 model year, according to reports. Canoo plans on having two variants of its electric van: MPDV 1 and MPDV 2. They will ride on the same skateboard chassis as the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle , but where the MPDV 1 would be the size of a Transit Connect, the MPDV 2 would be equivalent to the full-size Transit.

Both models will be front-wheel driven making around 200 hp and be available in battery sizes of 40, 60, and 80 kWh. The MPDV 1 will cover 130, 190, and 230 miles respectively whereas the larger MPDV 2 will achieve 90, 140, and 190 miles at these capacities.

Where the MPDV 1 is rated for 200 cubic feet of cargo space, the larger MPDV 2 offers more than double the cargo space – 450 cubic feet. The company claims its quirky styling has resulted in maximum interior space offering 30% more parcel volume than ICE-powered vans. The starting price of the MPDV is USD 33,000, and the company has started taking reservations online.

The Kia PV5 will be a mid-size purpose-built vehicle designed for businesses like urban passenger mobility and cargo transportation. Scheduled to arrive in 2025, it will be available in Basic (passenger), Van (delivery), High Roof (delivery), and Chassis Cab versions.

Kia PV5 concept front three quarter

The PV5 will have a modern exterior with angular vertical DRLs, discreetly placed headlamps, aero wheels, etc. The model will feature OTA (Over the Air) and FoD (Feature on Demand) services.

The passenger version should have a minimalist interior and offer easy ingress/egress through large sliding doors. We expect it to feature a dashboard that looks like a sleek, desk-like surface, a compact steering wheel, and a freestanding portrait touchscreen infotainment system.

The Kia PV5 will sit on an ‘eS’ platform, a part of Hyundai Motor Group’s Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) system, an EV skateboard developed exclusively for PBVs. The Kia SW PBV will be able to travel up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge. It will have a 1.8 m (5.9 ft.) indoor height.

Kia will manufacture the mid-size PBV at a dedicated factory in the Autoland Hwaseong production facility in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The company will begin mass production in the second half of 2025. It plans to produce 150,000 PBVs in the first full year. A Robo-Taxi version capable of Level 4 autonomous driving will follow, likely featuring a LiDAR on its roof.

Kia PV7 concept front three quarter

The Kia PV7 will be a large cargo delivery and multi van measuring around 207.5 inches in length, 81.3 inches in width, and 83.5 inches in height and having a wheelbase of approximately 133.5 inches. Customers will be able to use it as a people mover shuttle, mobile store/office van, delivery van, refrigerated van, and more. The large electric van will arrive after the mid-size model explained above.

Large logistics or distribution companies, shuttle service providers, ride-hailing service providers, small business owners, and contract drivers will find the PV7 attractive because of its spacious and versatile interior.

The Kia PV7 should also roll out of the same new dedicated PBV plant in Hwaseong, South Korea. Kia should also set up an exclusive dealer network for commercial vehicles in almost every market where it plans to sell vans. John Hargreaves told Fleet News that Kia would need to establish a dealer network for after-sales coverage. Hargreaves is the company’s manager for fleet and remarketing in the UK, where the plan appears to involve the launch of a range of vans and a wide dealer network offering sales and service.

Ram ProMaster EV

Ram ProMaster EV front three quarter

The Ram ProMaster EV is the brand’s first all-electric model in the U.S. and Canada. The full-size electric van will be available in five configurations, including two roof heights, two cargo lengths (12 ft. and 13.5 ft.), and two body styles. A delivery model, priced from USD 86,995 (excl. USD 1,995 destination charges), is available to order, while a non-delivery/cargo model will follow in 2025.

The Ram ProMaster EV delivery model has a 159-inch wheelbase and an extended super-high roof. It offers 2,030 lbs. of payload capacity. The Ram ProMaster EV cargo van will be available in 12 ft. and 13.5 ft. cargo length versions, both with a 159-inch wheelbase. It will offer up to 3,020 lbs. of payload capacity.

The Ram ProMaster EV employs one motor at the front across the line-up. It produces 268 hp and 302 lb.-ft. of torque and relies on a 110 kWh battery pack, which is also standard. The battery pack can be charged at up to 150 kW, and when fully charged, it should deliver up to 168 miles of range in the city. Note that the range is not EPA-estimated.

The ProMaster EV features the Uconnect 5 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which shows EV-specific details like charging level and power flow. Additionally, five charging identification lights on the dashboard lets the driver keep track of the charging status.

Merchants Fleet will be one of the key commercial customers of the upcoming electric van. It has agreed to purchase 12,500 units of the Ram ProMaster EV over an undisclosed number of years. Additionally, Stellantis has struck a deal with Amazon to deliver thousands of Promaster EV vans and is likely to be its biggest buyer in the United States.

Blue Arc delivery van

Michigan-based The Shyft Group (formerly Spartan Motors) introduced a new EV solutions brand called Blue Arc on March 9, 2022. One of the Blue Arc products the company has confirmed for launch is a walk-in delivery van. The company says the Blue Arc van will be a one-of-a-kind product in the market designed for high-frequency, last-mile delivery fleets.

Blue Arc delivery van rear three quarter

The Blue Arc delivery van offers 635-800 cubic feet of cargo space and has a payload capacity of up to 5,000 lbs. The battery pack capacity ranges from 160-240 kWh, with a system voltage of 800V. At least one of the configurations delivers a range of 150 miles. A solar roof that can produce 1-2 kW is optional. The electric delivery van has a scalable chassis design (Class 3-5), with its length ranging from 12 feet to 22 feet.

The Blue Arc delivery van features many convenience and safety features, such as a 360-degree camera system, large HD camera displays integrated into the dashboard, automated entry, lane departure, and parking sensors.

The Shyft Group has received CARB approval for its Blue Arc EV Solutions Class 3-5 EDVs. CARD has given the Class 3 Blue Arc EVs a city driving range rating of 225 miles. According to EPA, the Blue Arc Class 3 EDV with a 165 kWh battery pack can deliver a range of up to 200 miles and have a fuel consumption equivalent of 45 MPGe.

Former Shyft Group President and CEO Daryl Adams had said in an interview with Reuters that the company plans to build 200 units of the Blue Arc in 2022 and ramp it up to just 2,500 units by 2025. One company has already placed an order for 2,000 Blue Arc vehicles.

On October 26, 2023, during Shyft Group’s Q3 2023 earnings conference call, CFO Jon Douyard said that the company is postponing delivery commencement to 2024 because of battery issues. Shyft Group plans to make the Blue Arc delivery van in Charlotte, Michigan.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Volkswagen’s Electric ID Buzz Has Landed and Looks Well Worth the Wait

Volkswagen ID Buzz electric van

Yes, it's finally here. After years of glimpses and half reveals, Volkswagen has taken the covers off the production version of its all-electric ID Buzz. And like all the EVs we like most here at WIRED, it's got character—bags of it. Probably a lot more than can be squeezed into its microbus proportions.

With a flat front, long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a styling that pleasingly echoes the hippie bus of old, the ID Buzz is a world way from VW's more recent, not entirely successful, forays in EV van territory . Despite the VW T1, or “Bulli,” looks, this multipurpose vehicle is actually based on the same platform as the ID.3 electric hatchback. This means the ID Buzz has a 201-bhp, 150-kW electric motor driving the rear wheels. The on-board battery is 77 kWh, and while there isn't a confirmed range for the ID Buzz yet, we can expect around 250 miles.

Two Volkswagen ID Buzz electric vans parked in front of house at dusk

The ID Buzz, left, has space for families and luggage while the ID Buzz Cargo fits two 1,200- by 800-mm pallets.

The ID Buzz people carrier and ID Buzz Cargo van also have 170-kW charging, so that battery can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in 30 minutes if you can find a powerful charger. The Buzz also apes the skill we like best on the Kia EV6 , as both models will have bi-directional charging as standard. What does this mean? Not only should you be able to use your Buzz to power household appliances like a juicer or blender or TV, you can, in theory, put power back into the grid. Indeed, VW is even suggesting owners can use the feature to cut energy bills, by charging a Buzz during the day on cheap electricity, then feed this back into your home storage battery (if you have one) for use in the evening. The power transfer and auto communication to do this take place via a special DC bi-directional wall box.

Production of the ID Buzz begins later this year, with first deliveries due in the autumn in Europe. For those obsessives waiting for the all-electric ID Buzz California camper van, that likely won't be surfacing until 2025 at the earliest. For now, the people-carrying Buzz will have to do.

But there's a lot of detail here to celebrate. In the Buzz there's room for five people and their luggage, with 1,121 liters (40 cubic feet) of capacity. If the second row of seats is folded, that capacity increases to up to 2,205 liters (78 cubic feet). You get the choice of either two or three seats up front. For Cargo users, a fixed partition separates you from the 3.9-cubic-meter (138-cubic-foot) rear space.

Despite a length of 4,712 millimeters (186 inches), the long wheelbase combined with the motor at the rear means the Buzz has an impressive turning radius of just over 11 meters (36 feet)—about the same as a Golf. And, perhaps most important of all when it comes to things that drain EV batteries , VW's multipurpose vehicle quite improbably has the drag coefficient of a car. The ID Buzz's drag stats come in at 0.285 (0.29 for the Cargo), which should reduce energy consumption and increase range.

Volkswagen ID Buzz electric van

Both Buzzes have the same drag coefficient as a normal car.

The inside seems to be a particular success. Leather has been shunned for “non-animal” material. Appointments include high seat positions, comfy-looking armrests, storage trays aplenty, and more ports than you can shake a USB stick at: five in the Cargo and eight in the Buzz. The “Digital Cockpit” in front of the driver is a 5.30-inch display, and in the middle of the dash is the infotainment system touchscreen that can be specced up to 12 inches. Most physical switches are eliminated, as the car relies on haptic buttons and screens for the majority of functions. Thankfully, VW is saying it has improved the responsiveness of its haptics, which is a good thing if the past models are anything to go by. You can set the ambient lighting to 30 different colors.

And at the highest specification level, the ID Buzz will have more than 30 assist systems on board, including “Car2X” communication. The Buzz will download data via the cloud from nearby Volkswagens and supposedly learn of hazards or traffic nearby. And a “memory function” will let you teach your van tricky maneuvers such as parking on your steep drive or negotiating the parking lot at work. You do it once, then the Buzz does it each time after that, recalling your precise inputs on the steering and pedals.

No, there aren't any confirmed prices yet, and, yes, it does have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The 15 Best Camper Vans for Getting Away From It All in Style

The first years of this decade have already provided ample evidence that it’s important to get away from our daily lives from time to time.  And you don’t have to suffer the airport hordes or step foot on a plane to do so. We currently find ourselves in something of a golden age for luxury trailers, which has made it easier than ever to take your life on the road without sacrificing many, and in some cases any, of the comforts of home. And now, there are plenty of manufacturers and dedicated conversion shops giving the same treatment to vans and other similar vehicles. They may not be able to sleep as many people as their hulking cousins—with one key exception—but these all-in-one wonders come loaded with perks such as high-end kitchens, Wi-Fi-enabled multimedia systems, and plush beds. Plus, their relatively smaller size means they are more agile, off-road friendly, and easier to park. Below are 15 campers that will let you experience #vanlife in comfort and style.

Our Best Camper Van Picks

Best overall: airstream interstate 24x, best for off-roading: jayco terrain, best for weekend getaways: mercedes-benz eqt marco polo, best for off-the-grid trips: winnebago solis, best for cyclists: outside van tails, best for camping (anywhere): storyteller overland beast mode 4×4, best to live in: loki expeditions discovery series, best all-electric option: tonke eqv.

  • Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

Best With a Bathroom and Shower: Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Best for $50,000: caravan outfitter free bird, best for families: winnebago boldt, best for winter road trips: sportsmobile sprinter 4×4, best conversion: boho old faithful, best for diy couples: ford transit trail.

Airstream Interstate 24X

Airstream. Thankfully, the company isn’t afraid to branch out. Just look at the  Interstate 24X , the trailer maker’s attempt to take the camper van to new heights. Built on the bones of a  Mercedes-Benz  Sprinter—like a lot of the models on this list—the vehicle has everything you need to rough it in comfort. Airstream has done a lot to maximize space in its climate-controlled cabin. A modular dining table doubles as a desk, and it can be easily converted into the largest sleeping area in a Class B Motorhome. There’s also a full mini kitchen and bathroom. You can take the van off-roading, too. In addition to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine that churns out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque, it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a height-adjustable suspension and all-terrain tires. Pricing for the all-around beast starts at $213,850.

Inside the Airstream Interstate 24X

Special Features: —A climate-controlled living area that has been designed to maximize available space. —A modular dinner table, a mini-kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet.

Jayco Terrain

Jayco is best known for its hulking travel trailers, but like Airstream, it can do compact, too (well, compact enough to fit in a parking space, that is). The US company’s new  Terrain  model, which starts at $192,000, is an adventure van designed for those who like to veer from the beaten path. As the name suggests, it’s designed for off-roading, with a turbo-diesel V-6, Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a rear hitch strong enough to tow an additional trailer if you need more room. Inside, it’s a little spartan compared to some other options on this list, but its kitchenette can be converted into a sleeping area with room for a full-size bed, as well as plenty of storage space beneath. There’s even a built-in awning when you need some shade in the summer months.

Special Features: —Equipped with Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a heavy-duty tow hitch. —Kitchenette can be converted into a spacious sleeping area with room for a full-size bed.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo from the side The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Mercedes-Benz clearly doesn’t want to relinquish its title as the go-to van maker for outdoor lovers. At last year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the German marque showed off a prototype based on its upcoming all-electric EQT van called the Marco Polo. The stylish EV has everything you need for a weekend at the campground and is more compact than the ubiquitous Sprinter. When the van’s rear seats are folded down, the back can be used as either a sleeping area with room for a double bed or a cooking and entertaining space. The kitchen doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other entries on this list, but it does have a pull-out stove, fridge and sink. There’s also a pop-up, roof-mounted tent if your travel party includes more than two. The Marco Polo is a concept, but Mercedes will sell a module that will allow you to turn any EQT into a camper van when the $51,500 EV goes on sale in the spring.

Inside the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Special Features: —All-electric power train, so you don’t have to worry about doing too much damage to nature while you explore it. —Its  camping  gear—from the bed to the kitchenette—is part of a module that can be fully removed when you need more cargo room.

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B

The Winnebago Solis is for adventurers who don’t want to be confined to the campground. The van is available with an optional power kit that has everything a group of up to four adults needs to spend a few days off-the-grid. The setup, which includes an inverter, a shore battery converter, a battery energy converter, a solar energy converter and an alternator energy optimizer, can produce enough power to keep the van and all its features running for up to 72 hours. On top of that, the van features a kitchenette, a convertible entertainment area with room for a double bed, and a full-width wet bath.

The Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B's dinette can be converted into a full-size bed

Special Features: —A unique power kit that can provide enough power to spend up to 72 hours off the grid. —Still has all the features you’d expect from a luxe camper van, including a full-width wet bath.

The Outside Van Tails next to a cyclist

If you like to mix biking and camping, Outside Van has the vehicle for you. The Portland brand’s  Tails  model is a camper van designed with cyclists in mind. The van, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, has everything you need for a few days away from home, including a kitchenette, a roll-over sofa and a convertible mattress. But what really sets it apart is the rear of the vehicle that’s basically an on-the-go bicycle repair shop, with a fold-down work table, an air compressor and Molle panels to hang all your tools. If that wasn’t enough, it somehow has room for six bikes, even when the bed is laid out for the night.

The interior of the Outside Van Tails

Special Features: —The back of the van is basically a bicycle-repair shop with a fold-down table, an air compressor and plenty of storage space for tools. —Has room for six bikes, even when its convertible sleeping area is out.

Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

This latest offering from Storyteller Overland, based in Birmingham, Ala., is a true adventure van. The  Beast Mode 4×4  is the outfit’s most feature-packed model yet and was designed specifically for overlanding (as you may have guessed from the company’s name). It’s a true 4×4 powered by a 188 hp turbodiesel V-6 that’s strong enough to tow an additional 5,000 pounds. Its slick retro-style livery is offset with loads of useful off-roading gear, too, such as an LED light package, a roof rack and a side ladder and custom wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich K02 tires. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to relax after a day of exploring, including a cushy lounge that can be converted to a full-size sleeping area. There’s even a climate-control system to ensure you’re comfortable no matter the weather outside. It’s priced at a flat $198,746, for everything listed above.

Inside the Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

Special Features: —Turbodiesel V-6 sends 188 hp of power to all four wheels and is strong enough to tow 5,000 extra pounds. —Surprisingly cushy lounge for an off-roading beast.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series Expedition Vehicle

Let’s get this out of the way: the Loki Expeditions Discovery Series isn’t technically a camper van. It’s a giant expedition vehicle, but because its cabin is installed directly onto a heavy-duty truck chassis you also don’t need anything to tow it. The vehicle’s cabin is what separates it from anything else on this list. Loki Expeditions has turned a shipping container—yes, you read that right—into a full-featured living space that has all the amenities you’d expect to find in a luxury apartment, including a full kitchen with a large fridge, an entertainment area with a U-shaped banquet, and a wet bath with a cassette toilet. It’s also big enough to sleep six adults, with room for two in the dedicated bedroom and four in the entertainment area. And because the heavy-duty vehicle, which starts at $550,000, has all-wheel drive, you can take it practically anywhere.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series's living area and kitchenette

Special Features: —Cabin has all the features you’d expect to find in a well-appointed apartment and can sleep six adults. —Built on a burly heavy-duty truck chassis that gives you the freedom to venture off the beaten path.

The Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring with its pop-up tent opened

Looking for an EV you can take to the campground. The upcoming EQV just might fit the bill. Despite its relatively compact size—it’s smaller than the ever-popular Sprinter—Dutch camping outfit Tonke has managed to outfit it with everything you need to spend some time communing with nature. It has an entertainment area that doubles as a workspace along with a kitchenette, both of which can be converted into a two-person sleeping area with a simple flip of a bench (a roof-mounted, pop-up tent means it can sleep two more, too). Best of all, there are two variants available—the Touring, which is designed for long road trips, and the Adventure, which is aimed at casual campers.

Inside the Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring

Special Features: —Fully electronic power train means you won’t have to worry about filling up the tank (though the battery is another story). —Can sleep up to four even despite its relatively compact size.

Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

The Terracamper Tecrawl with its awning and kitchenette out

The Tecrawl isn’t a camper van per se, but it’s hard to leave something this cool off a list like this. Terracamper’s latest offering is based on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most legendary vehicles, the G-Wagen . The German shop has dreamed up a modular accessory kit for the luxury 4×4, that starts at $11,900 and includes a roof-mounted tent, a convertible sofa, and a pull-out kitchenette with a fridge box. Thanks to the ingenious setup, the boxy SUV can sleep up to three and act as your home base next time you want to rough it for the weekend. And because it’s a G-Wagen you can take it as far off-road as you want.

Inside the Terracamper Tecrawl's rear cargo area

Special Features: —A G-Wagen but has room for up to three people to sleep. —Packs a brawny powertrain that’s well-suited for off-road adventures.

Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Thor Motor Coach makes camper vans for those uninterested in making sacrifices. With the  Sanctuary , the company has taken Mercedes-Benz’s already excellent Sprinter 2500 4×4 and turned it into something you could easily live on—on or off the grid. The off-road-ready vehicle comes in two configurations—the 19P ($148,680), which features a back bench that converts into a bed, or the 19L ($151,060), which has a fixed double bed. Even with the bed there’s still plenty of room for other creature comforts, including a bathroom, an entertainment area with a TV and a kitchen with a sink, a dual-burner cooktop, a convection microwave oven and a fridge. An Onan 2500 LP generator keeps everything up and running, too, including an A/C system you can leave on for eight hours at a time. There’s also retractable power awning when you want to spend some time outdoors.

Inside the Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Special Features: —Full-featured bathroom has a sink, a shower and a toilet. —Available with your choice of either a convertible or a fixed bed.

The Caravan Outfitter Free Bird from the side

Caravan Outfitter’s third-generation Free Bird isn’t the most feature-laden camper van out there, but it has everything you and the family need to spend a weekend (or more) at the campground. The van, which starts at $50,810, is built on the relatively compact Ford Transit Connect platform but still has room for a full-size bed, a multi-purpose table that can be used as a dinette or workstation, and a pull-out kitchenette with a sink. Because it’s smaller than other options on this list, it only has room to sleep two, but there are several enticing add-ons, including roof- and rear-mounted capsule tents, in case you’re traveling group includes more people.

Inside the Caravan Outfitter Free Bird

Special Features: —It’s the rare camper van that’s small enough to be comfortably parked inside your garage. —Caravan Outfitters offers several intriguing add-ons so you customize it to your liking.

Winnebago Boldt

Airstream isn’t the only famous RV maker that’s gotten into the camper van game. Winnebago actually sells several, and our favorite is the luxe  Boldt . Despite being nowhere near as long as one of its campers—it caps out at 22 feet in length—the $230,276 van has everything you’d expect from the larger vehicle, including dedicated living and sleeping areas, a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom equipped with a shower. You also have several interior decor options to choose from, each of which delivers an updated take on classic Winnebago style. The Boldt is designed for paved roads and campgrounds, but if you want a more rugged ride, the brand also offers the off-road-ready  Revel.

Inside the Winnebago Boldt

Special Features: —Stretches 22 feet bumper to bumper, meaning there’s plenty of room for you and yours. —Enough space for dedicated entertaining and sleeping areas.

Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Take one look at  Sportsmobile’s Sprinter 4×4  and it’s clear what its designers had in mind: off-roading. Whether you go with the 12- or 14-foot configuration, the Texas outfit’s stripped-down take on Mercedes’s ultra-popular van comes equipped with a 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and pumps out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. That should be more than enough to tackle even the toughest terrain. Inside, you’ll find a spacious living area with a full-featured kitchen. If you want even more room, you can also opt for a pop-up sleeping area that’ll make it that much easier to lounge in comfort.

Inside the Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Special Features: —Well insulated throughout, but also has space for a propane furnace or heater. — 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 and four-wheel drive mean it can take on any terrain.

The Boho Old Faithful from the side

Struggling to find a camper van that’s just right? Boho might be able to help. The Arizona-based company specializes in conversions and will work with you to create the vehicle of your dreams. The company offers several 20- to 24-foot layouts—of which the most popular is the appropriately named Old Faithful—that can be further tailored to meet your needs, whether your priority is multi-season versatility, lots of cooking space, or spending serious amounts of time on the road. The company also offers plenty of cool add-ons too, like wood paneling and flooring.

Inside the Boho Old Faithful

Special Features: —Versatile layouts that can be further customized so that you’re getting the exact van you want. —The wooden interior option looks better than it has any right to.

The 2023 Ford Transit Trail from the side

Ford’s ready to knock the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter off its perch. The Detroit giant unveiled its own camper van, the Transit Trail, last fall. The adventure-ready vehicle is based on its uber-popular commercial van but is taller, wider and outfitted with protective body cladding. It’s also powered by a potent V-6 that sends 310 horses and 400 ft lbs to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Right now, Ford seems content to let the $65,975 vehicle be the base for the camper van of your dreams, but it comes loaded with a slew of features that will come in handy at the campground, including a drillable wall you can use to install shelves, a kitchenette or furniture, along with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a back-up camera. It also available in three body configurations—medium-roof, standard length; high-roof, standard length; and high-roof, extended length—one of which should fit your needs.

Inside the 2023 Ford Transit Trail

Special Features: —It’s basically a blank slate for you and your partner to create your own dream camper. —Still comes with premium features such as a 12-inch infotainment screen and a back-up camera.

Top 10 best electric vans 2023

Electric vans make perfect sense for businesses of all types, and the competition is hotting up fast. here are our picks for the best zero-emissions workhorses you can buy right now.

electric travel van

Electric vans boast a number of advantages over diesel-powered alternatives: they’re often cheaper to run, are exempt from the London Congestion Charge (until 2025 at least) and other clean-air zone charges being established in UK cities, and offer a more relaxing and refined driving experience. So why don’t more people drive them?

Well, some early examples of electric vans were hasty conversions from combustion-engined models and often struggled to cover more than around 100 miles on a charge. But manufacturers have stepped up their game significantly since, with closer to 200 miles or more now being the norm, and the latest models featuring technology just as impressive as the best electric passenger cars on sale.

The Stellantis Group currently dominates the market in terms of offerings, selling essentially identical models under the  Citroen , Peugeot , Fiat and Vauxhall  badges. However, Ford and Volkswagen ’s latest electric vans won big in the 2023 DrivingElectric Awards , plus Renault , Nissan and Mercedes are all looking to get in on the action soon. Here are our top picks – in no particular order – for the best electric vans on sale in the UK in 2023…

Best electric vans on sale now

Citroen e-berlingo, citroen e-dispatch, fiat e-doblo, fiat e-ducato, fiat e-scudo, ford e-transit, toyota proace electric, toyota proace city electric, vauxhall vivaro electric, volkswagen id. buzz cargo.

Don't forget to follow DrivingElectric on  Twitter ,  Facebook ,  Instagram  and  YouTube  for the very latest news and reviews.

Citroen e-Berlingo van

The Citroen e-Berlingo arrived in 2021 as a successor to the pioneering but by-then quite outdated Berlingo Electric, which had been on sale since 2013. It uses the same underpinnings as Citroen's e-C4 family hatchback , so it offers a refined, car-like driving experience, as well as decent 171-mile range, fast charging speeds and up to 4.4 cubic metres of load space.

Read our full Citroen e-Berlingo review to find out more.

Citroen e-Dispatch

Sitting above the e-Berlingo in Citroen's zero-emissions range is the e-Dispatch. It competes with its identical sisters the Fiat E-Scudo ,  Peugeot e-Expert ,  Toyota Proace Electric and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric in the medium van category, offering up to 6.1 cubic metres of load space and a choice of two battery sizes – 50 or 75kWh – for claimed driving ranges of 143 or 211 miles respectively. A variety of body sizes are available, as well as trim levels that come with a host of car-like on-board information and safety technology.

Read our full Citroen e-Dispatch review to find out more.

Fiat e-Doblo

The E-Doblo is the nearly identical sister van to the e-Berlingo above. The e-Doblo’s one-box shape provides lots of cargo space and is available in L1, L2 and Crew Van body styles, with the L2 version offering up to 4.4 cubic metres of space. The 50kWh battery is the only one available, but it does offer a competitive 175 miles of range and it’s coupled with 100kW rapid charging capability. Fiat Professional's 555 package is also available for the e-Doblo, which bundles five years of warranty, servicing and roadside assistance cover into a single affordable package.

Read our full Fiat E-Doblo review to find out more.

Fiat E-Ducato UK

Until the Ford E-Transit showed up, the Fiat E-Ducato was the go-to choice if you needed a load volume in the 10 to 17 cubic-metre range from your electric van. It's quite expensive, especially when equipped with the larger 79kWh battery needed to hit the maximum 230-mile range figure, but it has all the practicality and connectivity features needed to be a highly dependable workhorse. The E-Transit has a few extra tricks up its sleeve, but the E-Ducato can still hold its own against the Blue Oval’s best.

Fiat E-Scudo

The  E-Scudo mid-size electric van isn’t a bespoke Fiat like the larger E-Ducato . Instead, it’s a rebadged version of the Citroen e-Dispatch , Toyota Proace Electric and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric , which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For a start, you get the same choice of two batteries – 50kWh or 75kWh – for claimed driving ranges of 141 miles and 202 miles respectively, plus 100kW rapid-charging capability . There are also clever storage solutions throughout the cabin, while the long-wheelbase version boasts 6.1 cubic metres of cargo space, a one-tonne payload and one-tonne towing capacity.

Ford E-Transit UK

The one you’ve all been waiting for: the Ford E-Transit . The first of five zero-emissions vans from the Blue Oval, the E-Transit features a 68kWh battery and an electric motor sourced from the Mustang Mach-E SUV that drives the rear wheels. The E-Transit has a claimed maximum range of 196 miles from a fully charged battery, and charges at up to 115kW, which is more than twice as fast as the E-Ducato. Additional technology on offer includes adaptive cruise control and what Ford calls a ‘ProPower Onboard’ panel for powering tools, lights, laptops and conversions such as refrigeration units. Maximum cargo space on offer is 15.1 cubic metres, and it’s significantly cheaper than its E-Ducato rival, too.

Toyota Proace Electric

Toyota isn't part of the Stellantis Group, but it does have a licence to rebadge some of the European giant's commercial vehicles, offering yet another spin on the Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and Vauxhall models elsewhere on this list. While its vans are identical mechanically, Toyota sets itself apart by offering a 10-year warranty, as long as the van continues to be serviced by a franchised dealer. Depending on how you buy and use your vans, this could be quite the benefit.

Read our full Toyota Proace Electric review to find out more.

Toyota Proace City Electric

The Proace City Electric is Toyota's compact electric van, produced under the same agreement as the larger Proace Electric above. As a sister model to the Citroen e-Berlingo , Fiat E-Doblo ,  Peugeot e-Partner and  Vauxhall Combo Cargo Electric , it offers the same benefits as those models, including a circa-170-mile range and 100kW rapid charging , plus the kind of driving experience, interior quality an on-board technology you'd expect from a small passenger car.

Read our full Toyota Proace City Electric review to find out more.

Vauxhall Vivaro Electric

Vauxhall launched the Vivaro-e electric van in late 2020. It made an immediate impression, making other medium-sized electric vans on sale at the time such as the Volkswagen eTransporter and Mercedes eVito seem decidedly second-rate. Re-badged in 2022, the Vivaro Electric is identical under the metal to the Citroen e-Dispatch , Fiat E-Scudo and Toyota Proace Electric that also feature on this list, and is offered the same choice of 50kWh or 75kWh batteries for a 143 or 205-mile driving range respectively. Cargo volume is unchanged compared to the diesel Vivaro, at 5.3 cubic metres in the L1 and 6.1 cubic metres in the L2, but the electric model can't quite match the diesel's maximum payloads, managing about 200kg less in all instances.

Vauxhall ID Buzz Cargo

Winner of our Best Medium Electric Van Award for 2023 , the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo is an exceptionally talented EV. As well as lovable retro styling, the ID. Buzz Cargo boasts a practical load bay that can accommodate two Euro pallets, class-leading 256-mile range and fast charging tech that not only puts it ahead of other mid-size electric vans on the market, and means this is a van you buy with your heart as well as your head. A modern successor to the old Type 2 has been a long time coming, but it’s been very much worth the wait.
