Zihuatanejo has been a laid-back, sleepy hideaway for decades. Leathery surfers walk side by side with local fishermen, while snowbirds browse through small boutiques or have lunch on the sand. Rocky hills protect the teal-colored coves, backed by rows of palm trees. The clay-colored city is an eclectic paradise on Mexico's Pacific Coast, (happily) living in the shadow of its more boisterous neighbor, Ixtapa.

When it comes to the top things to do in Zihuatanejo, the majority of travelers are looking to the outdoors. That's because Zihuatanejo, one of the best small towns in Mexico for tourists , is absolutely beautiful. The bay is protected by craggy hillsides, and the coastline is pocketed with magical inlets and coves. The main things to do in Zihuatanejo are almost always outdoors, whether it's hopping the beautiful beaches, snorkeling with colorful fish, or catching a glimpse of a mighty whale.

While many of the mega resorts, restaurants, and activities can be found over the hill in Ixtapa, residents and visitors to Zihuatanejo appreciate the eclectic blend of local and tourist living. This isn't to say that Zihuatanejo doesn't get touristy. When a cruise ship is in town, the streets can be packed. Still, the charm and energy that Zihuatanejo exudes makes it one of the more magical coastal towns along the Pacific. It's the best of both worlds, if you will.

Laid-back is the term you'll most often hear when people describe Zihuatanejo. If there's any action to be found in town, it will surely be found at one of the many beautiful beaches that line the bay and surrounding coves near the sleepy fishing village.

The first one you'll see will be Playa Principal , also known as Playa Municipal. It's the main beach in town, directly in front of the malecon. It's a lovely little spot to watch the sunset or have a snack at one of the many beach restaurants, but the water isn't ideal for swimming because this is where many of the boats park.

Continue down the malecon to discover Playa Madera . This calm stretch of beach is really beautiful - especially at night when you can see the lights of Zihuatanejo twinkling all the way up the hill. You'll find people swimming on this beach without a doubt.

Undoubtedly the most famous beach in Zihua is Playa La Ropa - and it's easy to see why. This wide stretch of powdery sand is always humming with activity. The sand extends for about a mile and is backed by a lovely stretch of palm trees. The water is calm and warm - perfect for swimming. This is where you'll find plenty of activities, from stand up paddleboards to parasailing, and even shopping if you browse the vendors who set up stalls.

Follow a rocky path away from Playa La Ropa to discover Playa Las Gatas. It's much smaller than Playa la Ropa, but it is also much quieter, so if you're looking for a lovely beach to escape the fray, this would be it.

If you head out of town closer to the airport, you'll discover Playa Larga . Undoubtedly the most beautiful beach in the area, Playa Larga is known for being undeveloped. A few boutique hotels dot the coast, but for the most part what you're experiencing here is raw, virgin beach, and some of the most spectacular views in all of Mexico.

Speaking of beaches, one of the top things to do in Zihuatanejo is take a boat ride out to Ixtapa Island. Ixtapa Island is off the coast of Ixtapa, which is on the other side of the mountains from Zihuatanejo.

A quick taxi ride to Ixtapa's Playa Quieta will make it easy to reach the island. You can arrange for a sightseeing tour to the island, as well, which will include transportation to and from the pier.

The island has three beaches, all of which are close together. The calmest waters are off Varadero and Cuachalalate beaches, while Coral Beach is perfect for snorkeling because of its reef. The beaches here are beautiful and pristine, with a wreath of palm trees and plenty of open space. But in addition to sun soaking, visitors come to Ixtapa Island to explore the coral reefs, which are teeming with brightly colored fish and other marine life. After an afternoon snorkeling or diving the reefs, kick back at one of the small restaurants on the island or swing away in a hammock.

Mexico is known for its indigenous cultures, and the magnificent jewels they've left behind. When visiting Zihuatanejo, take a step back in time and visit the ruins at Xihuacan, an archaeological city about 30 minutes from Zihua.

The 3,000-year-old archaeological site is one of the newest to open to the public. What's fascinating about this particular site is that it does not belong to one culture in particular. It is believed to have been a ceremonial center used as a place of worship for different gods from different tribes. Tribes like the Cuitlatecas, Tarascans, Mixtecas, Aztecs, Zapotecas, Toltecs, and Olmecs are believed to have all worshiped here.

The site allegedly reached its peak between AD 650 and 900, when it was one of the largest ceremonial centers of agriculture and religious rites. Flooding is the reason why the city slowly became abandoned.

Xihuacan has several major structures restored, including a 45-foot-high pyramid, as well as a ball court. An on-site museum has more than 800 figurines, carved seashells, ceramics, and more.

Zihuatanejo is the perfect place for beginner divers to test out their sea lungs. The tranquil current over the coral, coves, and around the cliffs make the waters very easy to navigate, especially for those who are just starting out in their diving careers.

The best time to dive these waters is from November to May when the sea is most calm. The waters surrounding Zihuatanejo stay about 82 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Peak diving, however, is typically in the winter, when visitors will be able to see dolphins, manta rays, turtles, tropical fish, whales, seahorses, and more. That said, diving off the shore can be limited, so most dives take place off boats farther out to sea.

If you are a more experienced diver, deeper waters can be found, particularly with caves and swim-throughs. But for the most part, Zihuatanejo is the perfect place to visit for a first time dive or for those looking to gain their certifications.

The recently expanded Paseo del Pescador (Fisherman's Walk) is a paved pathway that hugs the shoreline in downtown Zihuatanejo. The sea-splashed path is lined with shops and restaurants, and is always humming with subdued activity both from locals and visitors. At night it is particularly beautiful when lights illuminate the walking path. You'll be able to walk right up next to the sea, hear the sounds of the waves, and watch the lights fade in and out up the hillsides.

The path goes directly past the main square, which comes alive in the evenings with dancing, street food, and live music. Those meandering the path will have stellar views of Playa la Ropa, as well as the rocky hills that protect the small bay.

Located near the Paseo del Pescador, near the Olof Palme Plaza, is an intimate museum that provides a welcome break from all that sun and sand. The Costa Grande Archaeological Museum was opened in 1947 and tells the archaeological history of this part of Mexico.

The small museum has six exhibition rooms. The first one is an introduction to archaeology in the state of Guerrero. From here, it passes to the Costa Grande Physiography room. Next it narrows into life on the Costa Grande from 800 BC to AD 100, when the coastline of what would become Guerrero was small villages and plenty of virgin, unspoiled nature. Subsequent exhibition halls cover everything from the impact of Mesoamerican cultures on the region to the creation of the towns as we know them in Guerrero today, and the colonial period when the Spanish were in control of these coastal communities.

For anyone who is interested in Mexican culture and indigenous history, this is an important stop, and a quick one that won't take up too much of the afternoon.

So much of Zihuatanejo's magic comes from being outside, and if you enjoy zipping around on two wheels, you'll find plenty of places to play. Zihuatanejo has five miles of bike paths surrounded by the rocky hillsides of Guerrero.

For biking, Zihuatanejo has two main routes. One goes from Ixtapa to Zihuatanejo, and the other goes from the Ixtapa Marina through an ecological park to Playa Linda. You can combine the two for an even longer adventure. More experienced cyclists will love the ecological park, known as Parque Aztlan, as there are a couple of mountain biking routes that take travelers deeper into the rugged landscape.

Mexico's Pacific Coast is world-renowned for its humpback whale sightings. These magnificent giants make their way down from the colder Canadian waters to give birth in the warmer waters off the coast of Mexico. Since Zihuatanejo sits on the Pacific Coast, it is directly in the migration line, which means that for several months out of the year the waters are teeming with pods of humpback whales.

When staying in Zihuatanejo, look for the Picante Cruise boats - you'll recognize these catamarans by the red chili peppers painted on the sails. Picante hosts a whole menu of different excursions, like sunset cruises and private charters, but from December through March they also have whale watching expeditions.

These eco-friendly tours go off in search of the humpback whales in the waters surrounding Zihuatanejo. A bilingual marine biologist is onboard for the duration of the trip and helps to educate passengers. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two. The tour includes a jump into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Being so close to the sister city, Ixtapa, puts visitors of Zihuatanejo at the doorstop of two beautiful golf courses. Ixtapa has two world-class, 18-hole courses, just 10 minutes away from Zihuatanejo.

Palma Real Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course. It was opened in 1977 as part of the vision of the masterplanned community that was Ixtapa in the 1970s. The golf course sits on what was once a coconut plantation. The course is a par 72, 6,898-yard course, with pops of character from its lush lagoons and tropical vegetation, overlooking the Pacific.

The second course is the Marina Ixtapa Golf Club , designed by Robert von Hagge, and opened in 1994. Also a par 72 course, Marina Ixtapa Golf Club has 12 bridges, canals, and undulating sand dunes. The entire area spans more than 136 acres.

One of the more beloved traditions in Zihuatanejo is the annual Sailfest. In fact, it's one of the premiere annual sailing events in all of Mexico. The six-day event brings together passionate sailboat fans from all over the world in an event that raises funds for the education of the children of Zihuatanejo. It has been in operation for 20 years.

As part of the six days, visitors can look forward to boat parades, concerts, dances, auctions, cook-offs, street fairs, and much more. The entire event is organized by Pro Los Ninos, a non-profit charity that has worked to build classrooms, kitchens, playgrounds, and new schools, and to provide more than 30,000 school meals a year to children who would otherwise go hungry.

About 40 minutes from the Zihuatanejo airport is the tiny beach village of Troncones. If you thought Zihuatanejo was sleepy, Troncones takes it to an entirely new level. The relatively undeveloped beach village, with a population of about 500 people, is known for one thing: surfing. Troncones is particularly famous for its three-mile stretch of undeveloped beach, which has long been a draw for surfers to this destination.

Troncones Point is the major surfing area here, bringing wave riders from all over the world to the perfect beaches and rolling waves. But even those who aren't proficient in catching waves are still drawn to the laid-back atmosphere.

While exploring Troncones, visitors can also head to neighboring Majahua, which has a smattering of restaurants and a beautiful beach. The entire area is pretty remote and unspoiled, so don't expect a ton of entertainment other than enjoying the pristine scenery.

You probably won't need more than a day in Troncones, as development is really kept to a minimum. But if you did fall in love with the vibe here, Troncones has plenty of accommodations, from beachfront bungalows to more boutique hotels.

Troncones is a taxi-ride away from Zihuatanejo. The ride will take roughly 40 minutes and will cost less than 500 pesos.

Cruise ships will arrive in Zihuatanejo in November and December

In the first days of November, the arrival of a cruise ship to the bay of Zihuatanejo is expected. The Director of Tourism, Jesús Gallegos Galván, announced that they have additional confirmations scheduled for the month of December.

Gallegos Galván expressed his enthusiasm for the notable economic contribution that these temporary visitors provide to the destination, further noting that a significant percentage of them return to enjoy longer stays in the following months.

The cruise season for the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo beach combination promises to exceed the figures of the previous season. The municipal government is in the process of finalizing negotiations with shipping companies to ensure the presence of additional ships in early 2024, especially during the months of January and February.

Regarding the cruise scheduled for November, preparations are underway to welcome visitors, and more details about the upcoming arrival are expected to be revealed soon.

The community of Zihuatanejo eagerly awaits the blossoming of the cruise season, which not only benefits the local economy, but also promotes the attraction of tourists seeking to enjoy the beauty and cultural diversity of the destination.

Cruises ships return to Zihuatanejo

ZIHUATANEJO, Guerrero.- The municipal president Jorge Sánchez Allec announced that there are three cruises that have been confirmed and another two are awaiting, “as a tourist destination we have fulfilled the main requirement that They made us think it was to have a pier in perfect condition to receive cruise ship tourism ”.

About Cruising to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

The tranquil town of Zihuatanejo, located on the Mexican Riviera, was largely neglected after the Spanish Conquest. With its ancient roots as a matriarchal society (the original name, Cihuatlan, means "place governed by women"), Zihua -- as it's affectionately known by locals and frequent visitors -- remained a sleepy fishing village until fairly recently. Inhabited by a few families, visited only by intrepid fishermen who moored in its protected harbor in the evenings, Zihua's charm and beauty was mostly undiscovered until the Mexican government decided to create a tourist paradise out of a nearby spit of land known as Ixtapa.

No building, by city code, is allowed to top four stories in Zihua, in order to preserve the "village look." Ixtapa, in contrast, has plenty of high-rise hotels and trendy shops. Zihua is a city with a municipal government; Ixtapa, a "created resort," is actually "governed" by a resort management company which oversees everything from traffic lights to law enforcement. Together they provide "two vacations in one."

At certain times of the year, while sailing to or from Zihuatanejo Bay, you might be lucky enough to see humpback whales as they migrate to their breeding grounds. And at other times, you might be able to assist in the preservation of the Green Ridley sea turtles as they lay their eggs in the sand along the bay's beaches. The ecological programs of the region include building pens along the beach where the eggs are placed until they can mature.

The nicest thing about a stop in the area is that there isn't much to see or do here, except to enjoy the natural charms of the locale. Young, hip, active and muy Americano, Ixtapa is where you'll find most of the water-sports vendors, the ubiquitous Carlos'n Charlie's, Senor Frogs and the other shops and watering holes that cruisers have come to expect. If you aren't taking an excursion or going off to the upscale shopping and hotels of Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo provides some fabulous "hanging around" spots. Just walk to the end of the tender dock, turn right on the Paseo del Pescador, and you'll see several small bars and bodegas fronting the beach. There's also an Internet Cafe and some shops. For serious shopping, keep walking to the end of the path that fronts the beach, turn left and walk about three blocks to the open marketplace.

In Ixtapa you can hang out at any of the beaches in front of the hotels or at any of the bars, or simply shop, shop, shop.

Getting Around?

You don't need transportation to take advantage of Zihuatanejo, as everything you need is within walking distance. If you want to explore Ixtapa, taxis are readily available and not very expensive (about $4 each way). Several shore excursions feature bus transportation to Ixtapa. Buses have the destination listed on the front so you can easily tell which one to board. There are water taxis to the little snorkeling beaches of Las Gatas and La Ropa.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

The Mexican peso is the official currency of Mexico, but the U.S. dollar is widely accepted. Note, though, that the symbol for the U.S. dollar ($) is also used for the peso, so make sure you know which currency you are being charged for goods and services. The peso is currently trading at about 10 to one U.S. dollar.

Zihuatanejo has a few banks with ATMs in its "downtown" area, about a 15-minute walk from the dock. Ixtapa has several. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most locations for purchases.

Spanish is the official language of Mexico. Most of the shopkeepers in Zihua and almost everyone in Ixtapa speaks and understands some English, so communication is not a major problem.

Where You're Docked?

Cruise ships anchor in Zihuatanejo Bay and tender to the small dock in Zihua; walking to the shops of Zihuatanejo is an easy three minutes; Ixtapa is approximately three miles away and is accessible by bus, taxi or shore excursion.

Princess Cruises to Launch Voyages Out of This Caribbean Destination for the First Time in 10 Years

Starting October 2025, the cruise line will sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico on seven-day voyages on board the Grand Princess.

Princess Cruises will return to San Juan, Puerto Rico, next year for the first time in more than 10 years, sailing week-long voyages from the U.S. territory.

Starting October 2025, the cruise line will sail from the capital of Puerto Rico on seven-day voyages on board the Grand Princess . Princess will plan to sail these southern Caribbean voyages through March 2026, the company shared with Travel + Leisure.

The Grand Princess will sail two alternating itineraries, both roundtrip from San Juan. The first will include stops in Tortola, St. Kitts, Dominica, Grenada, and Barbados, while the second will include stops in St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Vincent, and Barbados. Each will include a day at sea.

“Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from,” Terry Thornton, the chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America, which makes it a great fit for Princess. Plus, there are many outstanding options to choose from for a great pre- or post-cruise stay.”

While on board the 2,600-guest Grand Princess ship, passengers can enjoy a mini golf putting course, indulge in afternoon tea, relax in the adults-only The Sanctuary, and more. The Grand Princess is the oldest in the company’s fleet , but underwent a major renovation in 2019.

Cruises from San Juan will go on sale on May 16, according to the company.

While Princess is making plans to return to San Juan next year, the company was forced to delay another 2025 debut when it pushed back the delivery of its newest ship , the Star Princess , by about two months. That ship is now expected to sail in the fall of 2025.

Knife crimes are on the rise in England and Wales, and a string of deadly attacks in recent years has stoked public anxiety and led to calls for the government to do more

LONDON -- A familiar horror reached Pooja Kanda first on social media: There had been a sword attack in London. And then Kanda, who was home alone at the time, saw a detail she dreaded and knew all too well.

A man with a sword had killed a 14-year-old boy who was walking to school. Two years ago, her 16-year-old son, Ronan, was killed by two sword-wielding schoolmates while walking to a neighbor’s to borrow a PlayStation controller.

“It took me back,” Kanda, who lives near Birmingham, said about Daniel Anjorin’s April 30 killing in an attack in London’s Hainault district that also wounded four people. “It’s painful to see that this has happened all over again.”

In parts of the world that ban or strictly regulate gun ownership, including Britain and much of the rest of Europe, knives and other types of blades are often the weapons of choice used in crimes. Many end up in the hands of children, as they can be cheap and easy to get.

Although the number of fatal stabbings has mostly held steady in England and Wales over the past 10 years, headline-grabbing attacks and an overall rise in knife crime have stoked anxieties and led to calls for the government to do more.

“Knife-enabled" crime — in which knives were used to commit crimes or someone was caught illegally possessing one — rose 7% in England and Wales last year," the government said last month, noting some localities were not included. In London, such crimes jumped 20%. The other two U.K. countries, Scotland and Northern Ireland, keep their own statistics.

With knives so readily available, there’s only so much that can be done. Of the 244 fatal stabbings in England and Wales in the 12 months ending with March 2023 — the most recent figures available — 101 were committed with kitchen knives, far surpassing any other type of blade, according to the Office of National Statistics.

But the uptick in knife crime and a steady drumbeat of shocking attacks, including those that killed Ronan Kanda, Daniel Anjorin and three people in Nottingham last year, has pushed the issue to the forefront.

“It seems like every day something like this is reported in the press,” Sanjoy O’Malley-Kumar, whose 19-year-old daughter Grace O’Malley-Kumar was among the Nottingham victims, said on “Good Morning Britain” after the recent attack in London.

In last week’s local election s, candidates debated policies such as stop-and-search.

Even movie star Idris Elba has weighed in.

“I can pick up a phone right now, type in knives and I’ll get inundated with adverts for them,” the London-born star of “The Wire” and “Luther” said during a protest in January.

Guns are heavily restricted in the U.K. and there’s not much debate about it. That’s partly because the 1996 massacre of 16 elementary students in Dunblane, Scotland, led to a ban on owning handguns. Firearms used for hunting are tightly regulated.

Restricting knives is trickier, but the government is trying. It’s already illegal to sell a knife to someone younger than 18 or to carry one in public without a good reason, such as for work or religious purposes.

And certain types of blades are already illegal, including switchblades and so-called zombie knives, which come in various sizes, have cutting and serrated edges, and feature text or images suggesting they should be used to commit violence, according to the 2016 law banning them.

A new law will take effect in September banning the sale of machetes and closing a loophole that companies have exploited to get around the zombie knife ban. It remains to be seen whether the new law will have much effect, though, as machetes accounted for only 14 of of the 244 stabbing deaths in the 12 months that ended in March 2023 and zombie-style knives accounted for seven.

“Knives are harder than guns to regulate and there are already large numbers out there even if they were ‘banned,’” said Tony Travers, a professor of government at the London School of Economics.

History and statistics point to an enduring problem in a country where memories are still fresh of the 2017 vehicle-and-knife attack in London that killed eight people and injured almost 50. Three extremists inspired by the Islamic State group drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in nearby Borough Market.

Homicides committed with sharp instruments, including knives, machetes and swords, have exceeded 200 since the 12 months that ended with March 2016, when 210 people were killed that way, according to the Office of National Statistics. They reached a record high of 282 two years later and have held roughly steady ever since, dipping slightly during the pandemic lockdown.

Whereas guns are used in about 80% of American homicides, according to U.S. government figures, blades are used in most London killings. But brazen and seemingly random attacks like the one this month in east London are unusual.

“Sporadic acts of violence are a bit like shark attack s. They're actually very, very rare, but they get lots of traction,” said Iain Overton, executive director of Action on Armed Violence, a London-based charity. “I don’t think randomized public homicides are particularly commonplace in the U.K.”

The frequency of slashing attacks has amplified a sense of dread and distrust in cities, where most happen.

The Bristol Post published a timeline in March of more than a dozen knife incidents in that coastal city since the start of the year. It included reports on the stabbing deaths of three teenagers over an 18-day period and another teen who was stabbed to death in February.

Meanwhile, a teenage girl in Wales was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing a student and two teachers at a secondary school April 24, police said. That was just six days before Daniel Anjorin was killed.

In Ronan Kanda’s killing, one of his attackers, Prabjeet Veadhesa, then 16, bought a sword online and picked it up at the post office. He brought his mother’s ID to pass the post office’s security check, but no one asked to see it, according to trial testimony. Adding to the tragedy, Ronan was killed in a case of mistaken identity, police said.

The details of stabbing attacks differ, but Pooja Kanda said she sees similarities — chiefly the emotional what-comes-next: bewildered, shattered families, anger that such a thing could happen to a child or anyone again.

She petitioned the government to ban the sale of swords with exceptions and submitted 10,000 signatures, but was rejected.

The U.K. Home Office said in a statement that crimes with straight swords are rare and were not raised by the police as a specific concern, so officials focused instead on zombie-style knives and machetes in the law that takes effect in September. The Home Office said curved swords were banned in 2008.

Kanda, a working single mother, said it would be wrong to blame all knife attacks on poverty. Rather, there are many reasons they happen.

“The law is very weak. People are not scared to go to jail,” she said. “There’s a massive ego, a culture around it. To show how big a man you are. Kids have got this wrong idea that this is cool to do this.”
