First thing is first: you need to know about the weather. How else will you know what you should pack in your bags? It’s very similar to  Charleston in December . Historically, the average high temperature is 57 degrees, and the average low temperature is 43 degrees. That means you should include some warm clothing in your luggage.

We recommend a jacket, gloves or mittens, a knit hat, and maybe a scarf so that you stay cozy no matter what the weather brings during your visit. Of course, you should still bring a T-shirt and a pair of shorts to enjoy the occasional warm afternoon, although jeans and a long-sleeved shirt might usually be the better option.

Is Savannah or Charleston better?

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful.
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.

Charleston in Winter: Your Guide To The Best Time To Visit

Rainbow row by Leonel Heisenberg on Unsplash

There are a host of reasons to visit Charleston in winter. You’ll avoid the crowds, save on travel costs, and discover a bevy of seasonal festivals and special events.

Anyone planning to visit (or re-visit) Charleston, South Carolina often wonders about the best time to go. Before we planned a January trip to Seabrook Island, about 25 miles from downtown Charleston, we had the same ambivalence but weren’t disappointed.

Of course, there isn’t any one-size-fits-all answer. The city is truly a four-season destination and when to go depends on both your calendar and interests. But we believe that winter can be one of the best times of year to visit Charleston.

During shoulder seasons—either spring or fall—the weather is close to perfect, neither too hot nor too cold.  The main draws of summer are the area’s magnificent beaches (only a short drive from downtown) offering sun, sand, and surf.

Jump ahead to...

Winter weather in Charleston: What to expect

Jetty over a marsh on Seabrook Island in winter

Based on our experience, we would describe winter weather in Charleston as largely temperate but variable .

Although Charleston isn’t typically thought of as a winter getaway, it is an ideal destination for travelers who want to escape the brutal cold and snow of the Northeast or Midwest.

Yes, there can be a frost and even some snow flurries in late December, adding the glow of pixie dust to the spires of the Holy City. But m ake no mistake, you won’t bask in the winter warmth of Florida.

Because the weather in Charleston is best characterized as unpredictable, you will need to be flexible and pack accordingly.

As one Reddit user put it: Cold, gray and rainy. Or sunny and 75. And these could be consecutive days.

Overall, the weather is generally decent in January and February, and Charleston can be one of the best places to visit in the USA in March . While you won’t want to dip in the ocean, average daily temperatures will be quite comfortable, hovering between 40-60°F.

January is the coldest month of the year in Charleston with monthly rainfall only averaging between 3.1 and 4 inches during the winter months ( Charleston Daily , 2023).

Why winter is a great time to visit

Chalmers Street, the oldest remaining cobblestone street in Charleston

There are compelling reasons to visit Charleston in winter:

  • Most of the city’s many attractions and historical sites are open year-round.
  • In a city known for its cuisine, it can be hard to make restaurant reservations during the busy tourist seasons. This is less likely to be a problem in winter.
  • Airline reservations are likely to be less costly than they are during the high seasons.
  • Hotel and short-term rental accommodations are easier to come by during winter, especially compared to other warm-weather favorites like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, or Scottsdale;  in fact, rates may be discounted.
  • By December and especially after the holidays, the hordes of tourists have thinned out considerably.
  • As you’ll read below, winter is a great time to take advantage of the seasonal festivals and special events designed to woo tourists.

Winter festivities and events in Charleston

Here are additional reasons to visit Charleston in winter:

Indulge your foodie passions

The annual Charleston Wine + Food Festival will take place between March 6-10, 2024.  There’s no better opportunity for food enthusiasts to sample the Low Country foods and the creative cuisine that has made Charleston a culinary mecca.

The Culinary Village, the centerpiece of the festival, is held at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. While listening to live music, visitors are able to sample bites of Lowcountry staple dishes served by local chefs and caterers, along with wine, beer, and spirits samplings.

In addition, other wine and food events take place across the Charleston Peninsula as well as in North Charleston, West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, Johns Island, and more.

Discover new restaurants with fixed-price menus

Sponsored by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, Charleston Restaurant Week will last ten days, taking place between January 11-21, 2024.

Participating restaurants offer fixed-price breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, both in downtown Charleston and in surrounding communities. It’s a great opportunity to sample new dishes .

Attend the world’s largest oyster festival

Freshly shucked oysters are a winter treat (credit: Jerome Levine)

The Low Country Oyster Fest , the largest oyster festival in the world , will take place at Boone Hall Plantation (Mount Pleasant) on February 4, 2024.

This family-friendly, charitable event (also sponsored by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Foundation) includes the chance to eat oysters by the bucket as well as oyster shucking contests, live music on the main stage, and plenty of wine and beer. Kids of all ages enjoy the Children’s Area and foodies will appreciate the Food Court, showcasing a variety of local restaurants.

Set over 738 sprawling acres, Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens is a destination in itself. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is the oldest working plantation in the country, with beautiful gardens in bloom throughout the year.

Take a “Second Sunday” stroll on King Street

On the Second Sunday of every month (winter, too), historic King Street (the city’s main shopping street) becomes a pedestrian-only zone between noon and 5 pm.

Locals and visitors of all ages come to eat, shop, and enjoy the festive sense of community, enhanced by art vendors and street musicians. Apart from “Second Sundays,” King Street offers three miles of one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques with abundant opportunities to take advantage of winter sales.

Visit exquisite homes and gardens

Charleston is known for its gracious, well-preserved homes that help tell the city’s story.

The month-long Charleston Festival (previously called the annual Festival of Houses and Gardens) straddles the seasons (beginning in winter and extending into early spring) and will take place from March 14 – April 14, 2024.

Visitors can tour the interiors of these exclusive homes and get a glimpse of their private gardens. Tours and events vary by the day.

This year, the Charleston Festival will feature an exclusive site-specific exhibition of original works of art by world-renowned artist, Jill Hooper.

Shop for one-of-a-kind antiques

Antique lovers will want to visit the Charleston Antiques Show , which will take place at Festival Hall on the weekend from March 21-24, 2024, organized by The Antiques Council.

More than 30 prominent antique exhibitors showcase decorative and fine arts from a range of periods, and visitors can learn about incorporating antiques into their modern-day decor. Silver, contemporary and fine jewelry, maps, prints, oriental rugs, folk art, ceramics, garden antiques, and more will be on display.

A preview party and small group talks with designers are associated with the event.

Discover the region’s wildlife

Wildlife lovers “flock” to the annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , taking place this year from February 16-18, 2024 at the Charleston Gaillard Center on Calhoun Street.

The exposition brings together a broad range of exhibitors who pay tribute to nature with their handcrafted goods, outdoor gear, sporting apparel, artisan creations, and more. The event offers a unique opportunity to interact with these artists.

This year, the exposition will include a concert by Wyoming-born Ian Munsick, a pioneer of the new brand of country music.

Meet and greet famous authors

Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission

The 19th annual Wild Dunes Author Event & Weekend will take place at the Isle of Palms from January 13-14, 2024, a real lure for book lovers.

Three best-selling authors will be featured: William Kent Krueger, Shelby Van Pelt, and Stacy Willingham. The Sunday author event will be headlined by New York Times best-selling author Mary Alice Monroe and will include discussions and book signings.

Proceeds from the event are used to support literacy, providing one-on-one tutoring for local elementary students. The festival takes place at Wild Dunes , a Hyatt island resort set on a pristine beach that’s especially peaceful in winter.

Make a pilgrimage to the magnificent Angel Oak tree

The Angel Oak Tree

This iconic southern live oak is considered to be one of the oldest east of the Mississippi and a Low Country treasure. A 400-year-old tree that has survived hurricanes and natural disasters, the Angel Oak Tree is humongous at 65 feet tall and more than 25 feet in width.

Live oaks like this one are evergreen so even though they shed some leaves, they remain vibrant even in winter. The popular tree receives about 400,000 visitors each year so winter is an ideal time to take photos documenting your visit with the tree as a backdrop.

Sip & savor at the Charleston Wine Festival

Another iconic mural portrays the conviviality and hospitality associated with Lowcountry cuisine (credit: Jerome Levine)

With wine festivals in winter, spring, and summer, you might say that Charleston is a “spirited” destination.

The Charleston Winter Wine Festival will be held at Festival Hall on January 27, 2024. Participants will be able to sample more than 50 wines, mimosas, beers, and White Claw, accompanied by live music and a DJ.

Built in 1939 and renovated in 2008, the stately event venue is located in the downtown Harleston village neighborhood.

Experience the dazzling Holiday Festival of Lights

Festival of Lights

Take a ride to James Island National Park to enjoy the annual Holiday Festival of Lights that has been held since 1990.

Sponsored by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, the dazzling festival, which opens on November 10 and extends through December 31, 2023, features a three-mile drive with 750 light displays and some two million lights!

Other family-friendly attractions include the festival train, an old-fashioned carousel, marshmallow roasting pits, a giant holiday sand sculpture, a climbing wall, a visit with Santa (of course), and much more. An estimated 25,000 hot cocoas and 19,000 marshmallow sticks are sold on the festival grounds each year.

Learn about the city’s history and African-American heritage

Sweetgrass baskets, used during Colonial times to separate the rice seed from its chaff, one of the oldest handcrafts of African origin in the United States

Bulldog Tours is one of several local companies that offer walking tours. Compared to summer, winter is an ideal time to walk around the city without heat, humidity, or insects.

The American History and Heritage walking tour brings history to life. It offers participants the opportunity to learn about the influence and experience of African Americans in the Lowcountry on a two-hour tour featuring stops at Aiken Rhett House, Mother Emanuel AME Church, and the Philip Simmons Prayer Garden.

Take a cozy carriage ride

Visitors take a carriage ride through downtown Charleston

Even on days when the weather turns a bit nippy, visitors can stay warm under a blanket on a horse-drawn (or mule-drawn) carriage ride along the city’s cobblestone streets.

It’s a great way to see the sites, get a feel for the city’s architecture and learn about the rich history of the Charleston Historic District.

Go horseback riding on the beach

Horseback riding

Ever dream of riding a horse on the beach?

Seabrook Island Equestrian Center caters to riders of all skill levels with guided trail rides and pony rides.  Guides generally head out around low tide when shorebirds, seabirds, and local stand-feeding dolphins are most active so riders can learn about local and migratory wildlife.

Children under the age of 8 can take pony rides. Open Monday thru Saturdays, It’s best to make reservations in advance.

Don’t give up on a beach day

A pier at Folly Beach in winter (credit: Jerome Levine)

But even in winter, you don’t have to give up on enjoying the beach.

You could catch a sunny, warm day and walkers will enjoy the serenity of winter walks at some of the area’s most appealing beaches, including the Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach.

  • Even in winter, it is still prudent to plan your visit to Charleston in advance. Many ticketed events sell out quickly soon after they are announced.
  • Explore each of the website links above and note that many events have partnered with hotels.
  • If your visit is a last-minute one, stop in at the Charleston Visitors Center located at 375 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. The Visitor Center itself is a historic site. Construction of the building housing the center, in one of five railroad buildings, began in 1840.
  • While at the Visitors Center, consider purchasing an Essential Charleston Passport to get discounts on admissions to historic and cultural sites.

9 Reasons to Visit Charleston in Winter

a river with a city in the background

Charleston is beautiful at any time of year. Yes, we’re a bit biased, but this city has so much to offer year-round that we wouldn’t usually recommend visiting one month over another. Yet, for Charleston in January and February, the city is quieter, the climate is milder and the beaches are (dare we say?) prettier. Here are our top reasons to visit Charleston, South Carolina, in winter.

Reasons to Visit Charleston in Winter

The weather .

visit charleston sc in january

Charleston weather is pretty mild all year long, but South Carolina winters see temperatures other areas of the U.S. can only dream about in spring.

In February, you can expect the highs to be in the 60s and the lows in the 40s. And the best part? We rarely get any rain in the month of February (about five days on average).

That means, you can spend more time outside and less time in your hotel. And with so many outdoor activities (boating, hiking, picnicking and touring), you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors here.

It’s the Perfect Time to Visit the Beach

visit charleston sc in january

Yes, we’ll say it again: the best reason to visit Charleston in winter is the weather. But we’ll go as far as to say that this is also the best time of year to head to the beach.

The days are warm and the nights are cool (but not bitterly cold). Which means there’s more time to spend on one of our white-sand beaches . While you won’t be able to don your two-piece and jump in the surf, you’ll enjoy a few rays of the sun and some fresh sea air.

We recommend:

  • Dressing in layers (in case the sun makes a longer appearance or the clouds roll in a little faster)
  • Bringing a few beach games to keep your crew entertained
  • Packing a picnic to enjoy while you gaze at the horizon

Tourist Season Doesn’t Start Until Spring

If you’re the type of traveler that doesn’t like running into other travelers, you’ll love Charleston in winter — because you probably won’t run into any tourists this month.

January, February, and March are relatively quiet in the Holy City, and most of our tourist attractions are equally quiet. That means you can stroll through the historic market without running into crowds, take a boat tour with little or no wait or visit one of our plantations without fighting through the crowds.

While spring in Charleston is marvelous, you’ll experience higher crowd levels at this time.

Charleston Winter Wine Festival

If you love wine, we recommend heading to Charleston in January and February. Our Winter Wine Festival takes place here every winter and features some of the best wineries in the Lowcountry.

Talk to the winemakers, taste a few vintages and enjoy some light snacks. It’s a great reason to visit Charleston in February and geek out with fellow wine lovers.

Charleston in January and February: It’s the Perfect Time for a Walking Tour

a group of people walking in front of a building

Yes, we happen to believe that pretty much any time of year is the perfect time for a walking tour . Maybe we’re biased? But we also happen to believe that walking tours in Charleston in January and February are simply wonderful for the following reasons:

  • Smaller group sizes
  • Comfortable temperatures for wandering the city
  • Quiet ambiances
  • Less foot traffic

We love our tours (and guests) so much this time of year, we’d have to say they’re one of the best reasons to visit Charleston, South Carolina, in winter.

Want to go solo? Check out our Charleston self-guided history tour !

Charleston Is Romantic

visit charleston sc in january

Let’s face it: we always consider Valentine’s Day when thinking about February getaways. Not only is Charleston a great destination for nature lovers and outdoorsy types, but it’s also perfect for couples.

Visiting Charleston in January and February gives you another opportunity to snuggle up with your sweetie.

Charleston is home to dozens of romantic restaurants and hotels. If you’re headed to Charleston for Valentine’s Day, we recommend taking a romantic boat ride, heading to a spa for a couples’ massage or taking a bike ride for two across the Ravenel Bridge. Or, take a tour of the prettiest streets in Charleston .

South Carolina Winter: It’s Oyster Season

visit charleston sc in january

Charleston is known for its seafood — especially it’s oysters. And the best time to slurp a few salty morsels? Winter!

Winter is ‘oyster season’ in Charleston. The handy trick for determining the best months for oysters? Any month with the letter ‘R’ in its name! Generally, that means the colder months.

Oysters love the South Carolina coast because of its flat coastline. You’ll find plenty of oyster beds along our coast, but if you’d rather take it easy by heading to a restaurant, we recommend:

  • Amen Fish & Raw Bar
  • The Shellmore
  • The Darling Oyster Bar

Winter Is Great for Budget Travelers

One of the savviest reasons to visit Charleston in winter? The heaviest season for tourism in Charleston is the summer (when most families have the flexibility to travel because kids are on summer break).

Since fewer people can jet off to the Holy City in winter, this also happens to be one of the cheapest months for travelers! You’ll find some of the lowest seasonal prices at hotels and certain attractions. You might even discover a few deals here, too.

Some hotels even offer package deals in winter that include a discounted room rate and tickets to popular attractions.

You’re a Lover of Wildlife

The Southeastern Wildlife Expo takes place in Charleston every February! That means wildlife aficionados head here for a three-day showcase of nature and wildlife. The expo attracts nature lovers, artists, hunters, and fishermen.

Just some of the events include an art auction, a sheep and duck herding demo, and a wildlife sanctuary show. There are even a few events for kids, so feel free to bring your wildlife lovers in training.

Or, head to our wildlife sister city for a Savannah day trip .

Why Charleston is a top destination for the holidays (and other good times to come)

Dec 7, 2021 • 6 min read

Couple kissing on a Charleston street in fall

Charleston is South Carolina's capital of romance © sarahwolfephotography / Getty Images

Charleston's balmy southern climate opens up all sorts of interesting adventures at different times of the year. Summer is the time for beach trips and ambles around historic houses and museums, but the city has a special charm in winter, when the crowds thin out and the holiday vibe comes with mild temperatures that could almost be described as warm in the afternoons.

Then there's the fall, when the summer heat has died down and major festivals and restaurant events kick off the autumn harvest. Crowds gather well into November, but the mild weather means you can often stroll along the city's historic streets without a coat even when snow is falling in the north of the country.

No matter what time of year, you’ll find plenty of places to go and things to do. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to visit the Lowcountry for the best activities, weather, low prices and more.

Low season (December–February) is the time to evade the crowds and save money

The winter months from December to February are considered the low season for tourism, but if you’re someone who likes to escape the cold, traveling to the Lowcountry at this time will warm up your winter. Daytime temperatures hover around 60°F (16°C), a very pleasant temperature for the holiday festivities. Airfares drop too, though there's a slight spike for the holidays in December and Valentine’s Day in February.

Shoulder season (June–August) is best for beach trips and indoor activities

Like any American city close to the coast, Charleston is all about the beaches in summer. The temperatures can climb above 90°F (32°C) and with the thick humidity, it's a time to seek out salty sea breezes and maybe a colorfully layered cocktail. Tourists and locals move seamlessly between downtown and the Atlantic Coast; while beach rentals are usually booked up by June, you might catch a break on availability and costs if you stay inland.

High season (March–May & September–November) is the best time for festivals and exploring on foot

Charleston has two peak seasons, coinciding with milder temperatures on either side of the hot, humid summer. Spring and fall are marked by mild weather, big festivals and farmers' markets. Hotel prices are at their highest during spring break and Easter; the late fall offers the perfect mix of moderate temperatures, fewer tourists and more affordable rates. April, May, September and October are the most popular months for weddings — many come to Charleston specifically to tie the knot.

A beach pier at sunrise

Here's a guide to what you can expect throughout the year in the Charleston area. All events are subject to change.

This is a great time to grab a quick, relaxing getaway after the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It’s easier to find space at hotels and restaurants and the lines are shorter everywhere. Key events: New Year’s Day “Bill Murray Look-a-like” Polar Bear Plunge , Charleston Jazz Festival , Taste of Folly

Valentine’s Day provides a great reason to whisk someone special away for a romantic weekend. Book a nostalgic townhouse B&B, savor a delectable dinner at a Charleston restaurant, relax your muscles in the luxury spa at the Dewberry , or take a carriage ride to admire Charleston’s historical beauty.  Key events: Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , Lowcountry Oyster Festival , Roaring '20s Gatsby Gala, West Ashley Restaurant Festival

As the temperatures start to rise, locals and tourists shed their winter layers and start finding reasons to get outside. You’ll see plenty of spring breakers at the beach, but there’s plenty on the cultural calendar for those who choose to stay inland. Key events: Festival of Houses and Gardens , Charleston Wine + Food Festival , St Patrick’s Day Block Party & Parade, Charleston Bluegrass Festival

Visitors take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage in Charleston, South Carolina

April is a busy month for tourism in the Lowcountry. Several outdoor events draw huge crowds, and it’s a popular time for Charleston weddings. Flowers are in full bloom, and so are the spring festivities. Just be sure to bring an umbrella — sudden deluges can sneak up on you just about any time. Key events: Cooper River Bridge Run , Summerville Flowertown Festival, CreditOne Charleston Open , Charleston Race Week

This is when the Lowcountry really hits its stride. With summer just around the corner, people flock to the beach for surfing, dolphin-watching and morning yoga. Fresh produce fills the farmers' markets, and it's a busy time for the arts. Key events: Charleston Greek Festival , North Charleston Arts Fest , Charleston Battery soccer games, Spoleto Festival USA

June 1 kicks off hurricane season; only a small number of hurricanes hit the Lowcountry directly, but it’s worth taking out trip insurance if you book between now and November. Chances are you'll be able to relax and enjoy the pleasantly warm weather that precedes the summer peak. Key events: Park Circle Pride Week , Charleston Carifest

Shoppers gather at the historic Charleston City Market

As the temperatures and humidity levels climb, the events calendar and crowds lighten up. This is a great time to catch some education of Charleston's complex and thought-provoking history. Little ones can keep their minds agile at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry , and adults can soak up some culture during the First Saturday Art Stroll walks and some history (combined with shopping) at the Charleston City Market . Key events: July Fourth fireworks, Sweetgrass Festival , Southeast Crab Feast

There’s no way around it: August is sticky and sweaty and the reason air conditioning was invented (probably). A Gullah-Geechee tour in an air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz might be the best way to learn about Charleston's rich African American heritage while you beat the heat. It’s also fun to grab a drink and dance the night away at the  Shaggin' on the Cooper party on Mount Pleasant Pier. Key events: Grape Stomp Festival , SC Reggae Jerk and Wine Fest

The social calendar picks up a lot of steam as the Charleston air starts to cool off a little. September offers a wide range of activities and plenty of music and family fun. Key events: Cooper River Bridge Run (for 2021) , Charleston Restaurant Week , Lowcountry Jazz Festival , Sea and Sand Fest , Charleston Hot Air Balloon Festival & Polo Match

The setting sun reflects off parked cars in historic downtown Charleston

October brings a flood of tourists back in as the weather becomes cooler and more manageable. This is an enjoyable time to explore Charleston on foot or by carriage. With Halloween on the horizon, it’s also a great time to book a spooky activity such as a haunted jail tour with Bulldog Tours . Key events: MOJA Arts Festival , Charleston Pride Festival , Charleston Greek Festival (2021) , Flowertown Festival (2021), Follypalooza , Charleston Beer Week , Summerville Italian Feast

Hurricane season comes to a (hopefully uneventful) close, and the number of special events dwindles in November. Temperature get cooler but not too chilly – perfect for visiting the area’s historic houses, trying a cooking class, or taking a tour of one of the plantations. Key events: Charleston Scottish Games and Highland Gathering , Steeplechase of Charleston

As the year winds down and the holiday season ramps up, visitor numbers pick up in Charleston. The combination of mild weather and holiday cheer has a special vibe, and you can knock out your gift shopping at the shops along King and Meeting streets downtown, the Tanger outlet stores in North Charleston, and Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant. Key events: Holiday Festival of Lights , Charleston Holiday Parade, Folly Beach Christmas Parade , Chanukah in the Square, Yorktown Countdown, New Year’s Eve Flip-Flop Drop & Fireworks

From the Lowcountry Oyster Festival to wintry walks around the historic district, Charleston in winter offers a little something for everyone!

charleston in winter

If you’re looking for a mild getaway in the colder months, consider checking out Charleston in winter. With relatively warm temperatures for the USA at that time of year, tons of historic sights, and a whole host of great festivals to get stuck into, Charleston is a great city to visit between December and February.

Whether you want to try the local food at the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, want to shop until you drop on the historic King Street, or even hit the beaches of Kiawah Island, you can have your pick of Charleston winter activities.

I love winter getaways to historic cities. With the cooler temperatures, festive lights, and cobbled streets, it can feel like you’re stepping back into a Dicken’s novel! Charleston is absolutely full of that old world charm, with plenty of cutting-edge restaurants and shops to keep you anchored in the present day!

So, let’s get into the 13 best things to do in Charleston in winter. Hopefully this blog post will help plan your trip here.

If you’re planning an east coast adventure, then check out the best day trips from Raleigh .

Charleston winter weather

So, if you’re looking for a snow-filled winter getaway, heading to South Carolina probably isn’t the right place for you. In the winter, Charleston rarely sees snow, with the flurries of snow that do occur happening in February.

On average, temperatures in Charleston in winter range from 7-16°C (45-60°F) with around five rainy days each month. As far as winter getaways go, it’s a pretty mild city to spend the holidays in! As ever though, it’s always good to pack a few warmer things just in case the weather does go south.

Best things to do in Charleston in winter

Get fancy at the lowcountry oyster festival.

Speaking of live music, if you’re in Charleston in January, you need to check out the Charleston Jazz Festival . It takes place across four days and features over 100 jazz musicians from across the country playing in venues across Charleston.

Despite the sheer amount of performances, you might want to get yourself a ticket or two to avoid disappointment!

Eat up a storm at Charleston Restaurant Week

The winter festivals in Charleston just keep on coming with Charleston Restaurant Week . Normally held in January to help with that post-Christmas slump, Restaurant Week highlights between 20-30 participating restaurants that offer deals on new menu items or cult classics.

You can find a full list of participating restaurants and their deals on the Restaurant Week website. There are some seriously fancy places on here with reduced rates and some super popular eateries that frequent best places to eat lists!

Enjoy the Holiday Festival of Lights

If you’re looking for a family-friendly winter activity in Charleston during the lead up to Christmas, check out Charleston’s Holiday Festival of Lights . Held in James Island County Park, there are plenty of workshops where your kiddos can make stuffed reindeer toys, ride carousels, or even visit Santa in person!

The main event, however, is the 12-minute train ride that snakes around the festival, allowing you to see all the light displays up close! It’s a magical thing to do in Charleston in winter and runs throughout November and December.

Dive into history at Fort Sumter National Historical Park

Want to learn more about the history of Charleston while you’re in town? There’s no better place to do so than at the Fort Sumter National Historical Park . This small island is home to a series of forts that have been used during the American Civil War.

You can jump on a quick ferry from Charleston’s waterfront and enjoy guided tours of the park from an expert ranger who can answer any questions you might have about this Charleston icon.

Explore Historic King Street

historic king street

Located in the heart of Charleston’s historic old town, you’ll find the famous King Street . Separated into three distinct sections; Antiques, Fashion, and Design and Dining, there’s a little something for everyone on King Street.

On the second Sunday of each month, King Street actually becomes fully pedestrianised, so it’s well worth visiting during this time to get a full King Street experience.

Wander around Kiawah Island

kiawah island

Okay, I know it might sound strange to visit a beach in the middle of winter, but Kiawah Island has over 10 miles of gorgeous sandy beaches, sand dunes to explore, and a whole host of great water activities to try your hand at.

Along the coastline, there are plenty of hiking and cycling trails so you can explore this beautiful area. Remember, you can always bring a flask of something warming to keep the chill away!

Check out The Battery in Downtown Charleston

If you want to spend some time in Downtown Charleston, you have to visit the Battery. Essentially, it’s the waterfront walkway and seawall that protects the beautiful coastal buildings and houses of this area. You can take in the views of the water, Fort Sumter, and beyond!

Looking for a bargain? There’s actually a flea market on The Battery that runs throughout the year. It’s one of the best Charleston winter activities, especially if you’re looking for a unique Christmas present!

Explore the Charleston Harbor on a Boat Tour

charleston winter weather

The historic Charleston Harbor is a popular site to visit at all times of the year, but for the full experience, you’ll want to jump on a boat tour of the bay . There are so many different types, but the most popular ones are historic tours or nature tours – there are bottlenose dolphins swimming around Charleston as late as November!

Enjoy a carriage ride around the Charleston Historic District

horse and carriage ride

Want to feel like you’re in an old movie while exploring some of Charleston’s most historic buildings and streets? Jump in a horse-drawn carriage, pull a blanket over your legs to keep you cosy, and head off around the Charleston Historic District on a tour .

You can find carriages that hold full families or smaller more romantic ones designed for couples. I’d recommend going in the evening when all the cobbled streets are lit up!

Indulge at the Charleston Holiday Market

charleston holiday market

If you’re looking to get in the festive mood, there’s no better place to do so than at the Charleston Holiday Market . Filled with vendors from all around the local area selling crafts, seasonal sweet treats and drinks, as well as having family-friendly activities and live music, it’s a hub of holiday excitement.

This festive market takes over Marion Square for the majority of weekends in December, so make sure you check it out!

Get in touch with nature at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

southeastern wildlife exposition

If you love exploring the native flora and fauna of a town or city you’re visiting, you’re going to be in for a treat with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Focusing on South Carolina’s unique ecosystem, this festival is a mix of science and art, with so many creatives bringing pieces that were inspired by the natural wonderland around them.

The whole point of the event is to promote conservation efforts in the area and help raise funds, so it’s a win-win when it comes to Charleston winter activities!

The downtown area is perfect for walking around and catching glimpses of historic buildings that played a role, for better or worse, in the story of the United States.

There are many urban parks to explore, forts from the Civil War, plus islands and beaches to kick back on and enjoy the warm Southern sun. Charleston enjoys a modern culture but has done an exceptional job preserving its past, which is on full display for you to discover.

Thinking about a trip to the ‘Holy City’? Our 3 days in Charleston itinerary will guide you through the best spots to visit and top eats to enjoy. Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

You’ll be presented with some great districts in Charleston to base yourself on your travels. Staying in the Historic downtown area, aka the French Quarter, is the perfect option, especially for first timers.

You’ll have many attractions, museums and parks within walking distance, along with the best restaurants and nightlife.

Budget travelers should explore their options on the West Side. Still close to the city center, you’ll find some great options that won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are the best times to visit Charleston, South Carolina. The spring brings ideal temperatures for walking around town, enjoying the coasts and sipping a cocktail on the city’s many rooftops.

When the temperatures begin the dip, fall offers a milder experience perfect for morning walks and getting out on the harbor. To escape the crowds but still have the sun on your back, fall is to time to visit Charleston.

If you’re looking to visit the city on a budget, then winter provides excellent opportunities to save money. There are several holiday-themed festivals that are enjoyable, but be sure to pack a sweater or two.

Summer brings high heat and crowds, which isn’t always the most enjoyable combination. Having said that, with the sun out and atmosphere at its peak, summer is an exciting time to be in Charleston, South Carolina.

Day 1: History, Markets, and Parks

After arriving for your three days in Charleston adventure, get your bearings by exploring the trendy King Street. Downtown Charleston is the focus of day one, with many historical buildings, boutiques and restaurants to discover along the way.

King Street has risen to become a favorite hangout among locals, with a hearty focus on entertainment and fun. But with over 300 years of history, the stretch of road has been immensely important through every era.

If you’re looking to get your shopping fix in early on your travels, then you will love window shopping along King Street. There are several eye-popping boutiques and if you’ve time your run nicely, King Street closes to vehicles every second Sunday of the month. Opening up the space to more outdoor dining, pop up markets along with live music and entertainment.

After stretching your legs out and gathering your sense of direction, it’s time to begin your journey through the storied past, both good and bad, of Charleston, South Carolina. Begin your historical adventures by visiting the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon.

This ancient building has a consequential history. Once the building opened in 1771, it began as a customs house, before becoming a military prison during the American Revolution.

The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon was both a place to host prominent members of US society, including the first president, George Washington. While also being used as a public auction site for slaves. Lastly, the building is one of just four that remains where the US Constitution was signed.

To gain a greater understanding of the many uses of the Old Exchange, along with the tales of its past, you must explore the insightful museum. Guides in period costumes will help you take a journey back in time.

visit charleston sc in january

From the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, enjoy a short walk back through downtown Charleston on your way to the Old Slave Mart Museum. Both buildings are linked through an ordinance. When a law passed that banned the sale of slaves in the open, ‘marts’ opened up around Charleston and South Carolina. One of the best preserved examples of the slave trade and an important educational experience is the Old Slave Mart Museum.

Auctions were held here between 1856 and 1863 and the museum helps to tell the stories of the victims and their families. The jarring experience will help you understand not just local history but the power of the slave trade in South Carolina. It’s estimated that 40% of enslaved people who were taken to the United States arrived in the city of Charleston.

visit charleston sc in january

Just a quick stroll away from the Old Slave Mart Museum is the Charleston Old City Market. Since the 1700s, the market has been the center of commerce and trade. The market remains a prominent historical landmark in the downtown district and is one of the top things to do in Charleston, South Carolina.

Now catering more towards the tourist crowd, you can still explore the beautiful building while also stumbling across a gorgeous memento. Over 300 local vendors sell their handmade wares inside the market, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Vibrant and colorful, the market is simply a fun place to be, whether you walk away with a cherished item or not.

visit charleston sc in january

As the sun falls over Charleston, make a beeline for the stunning Waterfront Park. A haven for locals and travelers alike, the park is on 12 acres with a long stretch directly on the harbor. Stroll along until you spot an old-fashioned park bench and simply enjoy the beautiful late afternoon scenery.

Kids can roam the playground, the several gardens bloom adding fresh colors to the park, and on the harbor, yachts bob up and down as the horizon flashes with orange and reds.

Where to Eat

If you didn’t find a spot to eat on King Street, then you can’t go wrong with Leon’s Oyster Shop. The local favorite isn’t just about delicious oysters, as it serves up classic southern-style chicken and Asian-American cuisine.

End your first down in the city at Chez Nous. Each day, the head chef writes a new menu by hand, meaning the experience is different every time. Enjoy scrumptious European comfort food in a beautiful setting.

Day 2: Plantations, Forts, and Aquariums

With a full day exploring Charleston, South Carolina ahead, start off with a rejuvenating trip through the Charleston Farmers Market. Enjoy some crisp morning air as you browse the fresh produce and experience local culture. Beyond the regional fruits and vegetables, you’ll discover over a hundred local artisans and designers who are backed by some vibrant live music, all morning long.

Located downtown in Marion Square, the city’s farmers market is considered one of the best in the South. As the locals descend upon the market, the atmosphere rises, making it an exciting way to start the morning. The Charleston Farmers Market is open every Saturday from April to November!

With some fresh ingredients and produce for a delightful midday picnic, jump in the car and make your way to the Middleton Place Plantation. Charleston is home to several historic plantations that have been well preserved to show both sides of early South Carolinian life.

One of the most beautiful plantations around the city also offers a chance to explore the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States. The well-appointed home comes from a 17 th century European design surrounded by stunning terraces, hedged gardens and pools.

Regardless of the season, there is something blooming with azaleas in the springtime and rare camellias in the winter. The Stableyards have guides recreating everyday life from blacksmithing, to carpentry, weaving, pottery and what life was like for slaves on the rice plantation.

Touring the home is the top attraction at Middleton Plantation and a chance to learn more about the slaves that lived on the property and the generations of Middletons who lived in the home. Discover rare books, period furniture and portraits and the untouched rooms of the family who lived here for centuries.

After returning to South Carolina, head out to the harbor and visit the famous Fort Sumter. You likely would have spotted the historic fort while relaxing at the Waterfront Park, but today you’ll set foot inside the place where the Civil War began in 1861.

On April 12 th of that year, the Confederacy attacked the fort beginning what would be a four-year war between the Confederates and the Union. At the end of the Civil War, the American flag was raised over the remains. To this day, park rangers tell the tales of the fort and how it created the snowball that changed the path of American history.

With so much to see and experience when it comes to history in Charleston, South Carolina, why not sign up for a walking tour ? Alongside an expert guide, stroll between the important historical sites in the city, from mansions, to museums, gardens and Fort Sumter while learning the full story from the 18 th century to the modern day.

One of the top things to do in Charleston, South Carolina with kids is to visit the state’s top aquarium. The South Carolina Aquarium isn’t just home to marine life either, with exhibits featuring mammals, birds, reptiles and plants that help you discover the natural world around Charleston.

The aquarium is all about being hands on, which is why young and old will have a blast exploring the attraction. Here you can touch sharks, stingrays and starfish while enjoying a series of interactive shows.

However, the most popular part of the South Carolina Aquarium is the Sea Turtle Hospital. It’s the only one of its kind in the state and is home to Caretta, the famous loggerhead turtle that weighs 220 pounds (100kg).

Keep things simple and delicious by starting your morning at Millers All Day. With cute interior decor, you’ll know you’re dining out in the South, and you can enjoy a delectable Southern-style breakfast without breaking the bank.

On your way back from the Middleton Plantation stop by Hannibal’s Kitchen for lunch. The unassuming orange building is essentially a hole-in-the-wall, but serves up amazing local soul cuisine. Expect some quality soul-style seafood and, of course, some bona fide epic chicken.

For date night, make a reservation at Husk. In a building from the 1800s, enjoy ‘new South’ cuisine that elevates the well-known favorites into a different stratosphere. Under the inviting lights, this is the perfect end to a great day in Charleston.

Day 3: Lighthouses, Food, and Boats

Just 20 minutes from Charleston is one of the most beautiful parts of South Carolina. Sullivan’s Island is home to a historic lighthouse and several beautiful beaches, perfect for some early morning sun and a quick dip in the refreshing water.

Begin your morning on the island by exploring Charleston Light, aka the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse. The storybook lighthouse is one of the more modern installations in the US. After opening in 1962, only the beacons in Texas are younger.

Slim and triangular, the lighthouse is white on the bottom and black on top and owing to its new age design; you don’t have to walk to the top. Instead, you can enjoy an air-conditioned elevator ride to the observation deck at the highest level.

After soaking up the views, it’s time to head to the beach. Sullivan’s Island is home to many, but Station 18 is the closest. If you feel like doing more than sun baking and swimming, then grab all the gear you need at Sealand Sports . Whether that be surfboards, SUPs or even a bicycle, they’ve got you covered.

Once you’re back in the city, explore a different side to ‘Chuck Town’ with Charleston Culinary Tours . Their main tour will take you to all the top spots in the Historic District along with the City Market, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the best eats in the city.

With your three days in Charleston, South Carolina, coming to a close, there are still a few activities that are well-worth experiencing. Our top picks are the Schooner Pride, The Charleston Museum and Battery Park.

If you’re itching to get back out on the harbor, the Schooner Pride is a stunning 84-foot (26m) sailing vessel. With so much history within the city streets, it’s only fair that the boat itself is historic. With a trio of masts and a classic look, the Schooner Pride is right out of your history books.

With Charleston Harbor Tours you can not only set foot on the magnificent vessel but also explore the harbor in depth, with the chance to spot dolphins! From the boat, you’ll also have memorable views of the city skyline and a chance to reflect on your amazing time in Charleston.

If you haven’t yet had your fill of history, then explore America’s First Museum. Founded in 1773, the Charleston Museum features a vast collection of permanent exhibits featuring Native American culture and the original European settlers.

Discover a world of weaponry used in the Revolutionary and Civil War. While another exhibit showcases the quirky collection of a 19 th century world traveler.

visit charleston sc in january

Lastly, if you just want to relax and enjoy the sights, then end your trip to Charleston at The Battery. This picturesque urban park was once the sight of a major Civil War battle. Just beside the park is Rainbow Row, home to stately, colorful mansions.

If you’re feeling down about beginning your last day in Charleston, then Daps Breakfast and Imbibe will put a smile on your face. The all-day breakfast joint comes with delightful breakfast wine, fluffy pancakes, generous vegetarian dishes and the popular Big Meaty.

Before leaving Sullivan’s Island, dine at the Obstinate Daughter, one of the top restaurants in Charleston. The restaurant is influenced by Spanish, Italian and French cuisine and offers a worldly take on your favorite southern classics. Book ahead, as the restaurant is always in high demand.

Final Thoughts

Charleston, South Carolina, is a fantastic option for a three-day vacation. The diverse city has something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of history, southern food or amazing architecture.

With markets, museums, parks and restaurants creating a vibrant downtown area, you could spend all three days walking the beautiful streets. But with the harbor, islands and plantations waiting to be explored, balancing the two will help you make the most of your short, but sweet three days in Charleston, South Carolina.

Yes it's a very good time to visit because of lack of crowds and less demand for restaurants. The only downside is if you were planning on going swimming at a local beach.

We have camellias blooming through January.

You most likely will be walking up and down king street in jeans and a light sweater, without worrying about being on the shady side of the street, so yes a good time to be there!

Thanks. Can you recommend a hotel that doesn’t force you to use valet parking? Preferably in French Quarter up to around $400 a night. Two adults.

Try The Vendue, don’t pay any attention to the French Quarter tag, it doesn’t mean anything in CHS.

Also consider Mills House (newly renovated, have not seen it).

Moonslice no one forces you to use valet parking just because it's available.

CP rates for deluxe rooms are $335 to $365 depending on day before tax. They don’t have in room coffee though. City garage is across street and may be cheaper than the $49 a day valet.

Vendue has a sale now and premier king rooms are only around $200 a night.

Mills has a dumb fee they charge each day similar to resort fee but they call it something else.

The city parking garages will always be cheaper than valet parking. All the public city garages have a rate of $2 an hour that maxes out at $18, however the new day starts at midnight.

And just a heads up that you should plan to make reservations at any restaurants that you want to try. Even in January there will be competition for the better tables.

Visiting Charleston, SC: When’s the Best Time to Go?

Green leaves with red flowers over a brick wall and wooden curved gate

Charleston is South Carolina’s charming, historical, oceanfront powerhouse. The city was founded in the early 1600’s when the Carolina colony was first established, and Charleston quickly grew into the South’s most important port city.

Today, it’s still an important port city, but it’s also become one of the United States’ top vacation destinations . Travel + Leisure ranked Charleston the USA’s #1 City and travel destination for 9 years in a row!

There’s so much to see and do and eat here that it appeals to pretty much everyone. Charleston can accommodate solo travelers, couples, or even the whole family.

So, when’s the best time to go to Charleston? Is there a best time of year to visit Charleston?

Answer: when to go depends on what you want to see the most.

There is no bad time to visit Charleston; each season has its own events and attractions.

No time to read now? Grab the FREE Cheat Sheet for later!

When is high season, shoulder season, and low season in Charleston?

High season.

There are actually TWO “high seasons” in Charleston: March through May and again in September through November.

The first encompasses Easter, azalea blooms, and spring break.

The second is everyone that wants a warm beach vacation without experiencing the intense Southern summers. Don’t be fooled by the time of year; fall is not crisp, cool weather in Charleston.

Shoulder Season

Shoulder season is June through August for Charleston. Not typical shoulder season months. In Charleston’s case, it’s because of the summer heat.

Southern summers are famously hot and humid . I know many a Midwesterner that claims their summers get just as hot, but that’s missing the point.

The temperatures may be similar for a few months, but the duration and accompanying humidity in the South makes everything worse. Trust me, I’ve lived in both regions for over a decade each: Southern summers are worse.

Luckily for Charleston, the city is situated on the coast and enjoys cooling ocean breezes to help alleviate the heat and humidity.

It still gets obnoxiously hot and humid; just not as bad as inland cities with no breezes.

Least Crowded Season

December through February sees the fewest tourists , but I hesitate to call it a low season.

Several large festivals are held during this time, and snowbirds flock to the monthly rentals on Kiawah and Seabrook Islands.

Hurricane Season in Charleston

Another important season to consider when planning a trip to Charleston: Hurricane Season.

June 1 through November 30 is the official time frame for hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

In reality, hurricanes rarely hit in the early or later months of the official hurricane season, and Charleston is geographically less likely to experience hurricanes anyway.

And when they do show up, the city usually gets more warning than a day or two, so you’ll have time to reschedule your travel.

While hurricane season is something to consider, I wouldn’t avoid it like the plague. It’s just not as common a problem here as it is in someplace like Florida or the Gulf Coast states.

Spring in Charleston: March, April, May

Charleston’s first high season is spring, and for good reason.

>>Easter

One of Charleston’s nicknames is the Holy City, thanks to its overzealousness with building churches over the centuries. Partner that with the warmer weather and possibility of blooming flowers, and Easter week becomes one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit Charleston .

If crowds aren’t your thing, then skip this week and come the week before or after.

>>Azalea Season

Azaleas are a big deal in Charleston. Found in every single yard and adorning everything from neighborhood entrances to business parking lots, azaleas are everywhere.

The end of March and beginning of April is mega-bloom time. Dates vary from year to year, but this is always one of the best times to visit Charleston .

Hundreds of pink, white, and red azalea flowers cover bushes surrounding a wooden bridge with a white house and pine trees in the background

The city and surrounding area bursts into bloom. Landscaping turns pink, white, and purple, and there is no escaping it…for about two weeks.

Then, the azaleas are all gone, and we’re left with boring green bushes. But don’t worry, the rest of the flowers stay in bloom for much longer!

It’s a gorgeous time to visit and a photographer’s dream , if you catch peak bloom. The Ashley River Plantations are especially magical to visit during this time.

>>Beaches

Spring also sees the Charleston beaches beginning to wake up. The water is still kind of cold, but warm days make it possible to relax on the beach without a jacket.

Spring breakers (though not as bad as Florida beaches), bachelorette parties, and girls’ trips all start to show up regularly.

Fair Warning : May is technically spring, but in Charleston it feels more like summer.

Notable Events in Spring

  • Festival of Houses and Gardens in March/April
  • Cooper River Bridge Run in April
  • Spoleto Festival in May/June

A white sailboat floats on a deep blue Charleston Harbor in front of Castle Pinckney

Summer in Charleston: June, July, August

This is the South, and it gets hot and humid in the summer. It’s unavoidable. But if you can handle the heat, then your reward is shoulder season prices and somewhat smaller crowds .

>>Summer Temperatures

Expect highs in the low 90’s °F and lows never leaving the mid-to-high 70’s °F at night.

Avoid going outside in the middle part of the day when it’s hottest. Instead, go explore one of the many indoor activities Charleston has to offer.

June 1 is the official beginning of hurricane season, but don’t let that get you down. Hurricanes rarely show up in Charleston in June; they are most active in August.

Pro Tip : I wouldn’t not go to Charleston because it’s hurricane season, but I would get travel insurance in case you need to reschedule.

The days preceding a storm can actually be some of the best days for waves if you’re a boogie boarder, and storm clouds are what add that gorgeous deep purple coloring to sunsets .

>>Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatchlings

Loggerhead sea turtles return to Charleston’s beaches every summer to lay their eggs. Hatchlings start to poke their little heads out of the sand in July.

Note that it is illegal to touch or disturb a sea turtle or its nest!

Beware when walking on the beaches in the evenings. Flashlights confuse turtles and discourage them from laying eggs.

Visit Edisto Beach State Park and attend a night walk with a ranger to see the sea turtles and learn more about them.

A newly hatched sea turtle makes its way across the yellow sand

In summer, the beaches are booming , and beach parking will be at its most expensive and hardest to find, particularly on the weekends.

Charleston has 5 major beaches, none of which are on the downtown peninsula, by the way.

Isle of Palms and Folly Beach are the two most popular beaches, and both have piers as well.

**Note the Folly Beach Pier is being reconstructed. The new pier is scheduled to open in Spring 2023.**

>>Fireworks

Watch fireworks everywhere!

Joe Riley Stadium on the Ashley River side of the downtown peninsula is home to Charleston’s minor league baseball team, the RiverDogs . You can count on them for a fun evening out and Friday Night Fireworks, all season long.

Patriot’s Point hosts the area’s largest fireworks display for the official July 4 th celebration.

If you watch from downtown along the waterfront, you get all the Patriot’s Point fireworks but no music. It’s weird, but free!

Notable Events in Summer

  • July 4th at Patriot’s Point
  • Sweetgrass Festival in July

A green and yellow tractor sits in front of a corn field in fall surrounded by tall trees

Fall in Charleston: September, October, November

Charleston doesn’t see a typical fall season. In fact, it rarely sees fall foliage colors until sometime in November.

You’ll find pumpkin spice everything, but the weather doesn’t match. No crisp, cool evenings until November-ish, and there will still likely be 70°F highs.

The residual warmth is a big reason why this is considered Charleston’s second high season .

>>Bye Bye Hurricanes

Fall is the end of hurricane season. September is still very much summer weather , second only to August for hurricanes, but the pesky storms rarely affect Charleston by October and November.

>>Explore Historic Downtown

October and November weather is perfect for exploring downtown Charleston.

The cooler weather means you won’t be drenched in sweat for walking a block, but it’s warm enough that you won’t need a jacket, either.

Stroll the Battery to see Charleston Harbor, or find the Pineapple Fountain in Waterfront Park. See Rainbow Row. Visit a historic home. Peruse the City Market. Enjoy dinner and drinks at a rooftop restaurant or bar.

A blue and teal umbrella stands alone in the sand at Isle of Palms beach as the sun sets behind the pier in the distance

Ocean temperatures are still pretty good into the beginning of October, when it starts to cool off. This is the perfect time of year to go to the beach in Charleston without the crowds.

Everyone else in the country is out leaf peeping, so the beaches have little to no crowds.

Notable Events in Fall

  • Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in October
  • The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Fall Tours & Master Series in October

A large gold sign spells out JOY with a pineapple in place of the O

Winter in Charleston: December, January, February

It’s only fair after the extreme summers that Charleston gets mild winters . Charleston winter temperatures are so mild that a coat heavier than a fleece or hoodie is usually unnecessary.

It doesn’t snow or ice here , so understand that this part of the country is ill-equipped to handle it.

If it does snow, even just a few inches, be prepared for businesses to close or modify hours and watch out for inexperienced drivers.

>>Flowers in Bloom

Flowers bloom year-round in Charleston. December and January are camellia season , a specialty at Middleton Place Plantation on the Ashley River.

Camellias are found almost as prolifically as the azaleas in the spring. Thankfully, however, camellia blooms last longer than two weeks.

Roses are also seen throughout the winter in Charleston. Stroll through roses in Hampton Park near The Citadel and downtown.

>>Beaches & Snowbirds

Empty beaches can get chilly on a windy day, and then turn around the next day and be perfect t-shirt weather.

Bonus: beach parking is free almost everywhere this time of year.

Snowbirds flock to Kiawah and Seabrook Islands for monthly rentals to escape colder climates. These private islands are their own worlds, and the beaches are completely private.

>>Holidays without the Hassle

While winter is low season, the winter holidays are by no means slow. Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day are all popular times to visit Charleston.

Sometimes, you just need to escape the hassle of snow and ice and trade it in for a week in the sun with palmetto trees.

Colorful Christmas lights display recreates 5 of the Rainbow Row buildings from downtown Charleston

Prices will spike at each holiday, but not as bad as, say, New York City for New Year’s.

Charleston is frequently rated one of the top romantic destinations in the US, and makes a great Valentine’s Day weekend getaway destination. There are plenty of Romantic Things to do in Charleston for every couple.

Notable Events in Winter

  • Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park in December
  • Charleston Restaurant Week in January
  • Lowcountry Oyster Festival in February

Get the easy reference cheat sheet and decide when’s the best time to visit Charleston for you!

When is the best time to visit charleston…, for the best weather.

Spring, specifically mid-March to mid-April. Warm, but not yet hot, temperatures and fewer rainy days make this the sweet spot for weather.

December and January enjoy similar warm temperatures but experience more rainy days. Also, sometimes cold snaps come through, pulling the highs down into the upper 40’s °F and low 50’s °F.

For the Beaches?

If you want to get in the water, summer and early fall are good options for the beaches. Expect crowds.

If you prefer to stay on land and just need warm, sunny weather to sit and read on the beach, spring and late fall/early winter are ideal. Less people and plenty of sunshine!

For Festivals & Events?

Spring is a busy time in Charleston for festivals and events.

For the Best Prices?

Winter, excluding holidays, is considered Charleston’s low season and typically has the best prices for lodging.

Staying in the downtown historic district becomes an option for those with smaller budgets, who would otherwise need to stay in nearby Mount Pleasant or possibly further out in the high seasons.

Most tours do not have seasonal pricing. If they do, it’s often only a $5-$10 reduction. The only exception to this is some of the boat tours and most of the water activities, like SUP or kayaking, do not run in the winter.

Charleston businesses and restaurants are also not seasonal. A steady stream of visitors year-round means most businesses don’t have to close in the low season.

So, When’s the Best Time to Visit Charleston For You?

Now that you have an idea of what to expect in Charleston in every season, you’re ready to plan your Charleston vacation!

Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away or a fun summer adventure for the family, Charleston has something for everyone!

Best Times To Visit Charleston, SC

The best time to visit Charleston is from March to May or from September to November when temperatures are mild – but not stifling. Hotel rates, however, will be high, especially around Easter. Also, the city will be thick with crowds "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" at the blooming magnolia trees, the Southern fried food and their tour guide's ghost stories. Steer clear of high prices and tourist swarms by visiting in the late fall or early winter.

10 Things to Do in Charleston in January

©Leonel Heisenberg

During the month of January , this South Carolina city is particularly quiet and somewhat cold. Although it is still winter, during this month you will find many things to see and do in Charleston . If you're up for it, you're sure to have a great time in one of America's most picturesque cities.

The city known as the Holy City is noted for its food and art events throughout the year. January in particular is noted for offering a variety of events where you can eat and drink great food. Also, you can take advantage of the quietness of the month to wander the streets and museums without the hustle and bustle, as there are not too many visitors.

1. Celebrate Restaurant Week in Charleston

If you love trying new food and enjoy flavors in general, January is the perfect month for you to visit Charleston. If you can't make it to the oyster festival, I suggest you don't miss Charleston Restaurant Week . This event is celebrated throughout South Carolina .

For eleven days you will have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the best prices of the year. In addition, the options are very varied since you will be able to taste from the most elegant to the most casual of the menu. There is a wide variety of restaurants participating in this festival. This is a perfect plan if you visit Charleston for 4 days or more .

Being a highly anticipated event that attracts many tourists, I recommend booking your table in advance. Unlike other festivals, in this one you don't have to buy a ticket, but investigate the price of the reservation in each place you want to visit. I recommend you to check this information on the official website.

On the other hand, you can take advantage of offers on accommodation in some hotels, since due to this celebration, they offer special packages to visitors. No doubt you will have a great time drinking the best and tasting good food made in Charleston.

2. Attend the Charleston Comedy Festival

If you love comedy shows then January is the perfect month for you to travel to Charleston. Since 2004 the city has held the Charleston Comedy Festival in the middle of the month, although the exact date varies from year to year. Typically, the festival is held on a weekend starting on Friday night.

Comedians from all over the country participate in this event. Many of them have participated in TV shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, have shows on streaming sites like Netflix or have worked on Comedy Central or HBO.

Thanks to the variety of comedians that perform, you can enjoy stand ups, improv shows, sketches and much more. Each show takes place in different locations around the city so the cost of admission to the events may vary .

This is why I recommend keeping an eye on official sites such as the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau .

3. Participate in the Lowcountry Oyster Festival

The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is the largest oyster festival in the world and you can enjoy it if you visit the city of Charleston at the end of January. This festival sometimes takes place the first week of February, so keep an eye on their website. For an entire day you can taste delicious oysters and enjoy music and drinks.

The music at this festival is totally live, so you will be able to meet local bands . In addition, you will also have the opportunity to participate in raw oyster eating and shucking contests . Be careful if you decide to do this, as eating too fast can cause stomach upset. If you think you can handle it, go ahead!

Wine and beer are a must. At this festival you will get the best alcoholic beverages in the country to accompany your oysters.

The entrance to this event has an average price of 20 €. The VIP ticket can cost 150 €, but includes unlimited food and drinks all day long.

To find out the details and buy your ticket, I recommend you keep an eye on the official website of the Lowcountry Hospitality Association .

Although it may sound like a festival aimed especially for adults, the truth is that the whole family can participate . This event is one of the things you can do with kids in Charleston since it has an area assigned for them. There they can climb walls, play on the grass, among other activities.

4. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day with a parade

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated in the United States on the third Monday of January . If you are passing through Charleston during this date, I invite you to take advantage and celebrate the memory of one of the most important civil rights activists in history.

Particularly in Charleston there is a parade sponsored by the YWCA of Charleston that you should not miss.

The parade includes floats, marching bands, beauty queens and activists . The parade usually passes through such well-known streets as President, Fishburn, Ashley, Sumter, King Street and Marion Square. This way all citizens who come by can watch it for free.

In addition to the parade, the YWCA of Charleston organizes different events during that week .

These can be forums where well-known activists are invited to discuss the current civil rights situation. Also, there is a tribute to the work of Martin Luther King Jr. which you may be interested in if you like history. Its location varies from year to year, however, a common site has been the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

5. Spend a night at The Alley

If you want to spend an evening with friends bowling , I recommend visiting The Alley . Because of the weather this month, the best activities during the winter are indoors, where the heat is on. However, this does not mean that they are boring plans.

The Alley is one of the most popular entertainment centers in the city . It has eight bowling lanes for you to play in groups, as well as three bars where you can drink the best beers and cocktails. It also offers restaurants with good hamburgers, pizzas and much more.

In this place you can also enjoy the latest sports on TV screens distributed at various points. They also have live events for you to enjoy the performances of local singers. To find out when there is an event, you should visit their website.

6. Take advantage of the discounts at King Street

King Street or King Street is Charleston's city center, famous for its history, but also for hosting a variety of stores and restaurants.

In January, being a very quiet month, it is the ideal time to stroll around and enjoy the locals and the food . During this month some stores offer discounts and special offers to attract more visitors.

In this part of the city you will find a variety of stores dedicated to fashion, antiques, home decor, among others. In addition, the brands you will find are regional and national, so your purchase will help the local economy.

You should keep an eye out for different events that might interest you.

Before exploring Street King, you should know that it is divided into three districts . The first is the Lower King Street, the Antiques District. This is the oldest district and where you can find objects that come from past eras. It is certainly a fascinating place for collectors.

Middel King, the Fashion District, houses a variety of fashion boutiques where you will find bags, clothes, shoes and more, made by famous designers.

Finally, Upper King Street, the Design and Dining District , features the best home décor stores and restaurants in the city.

7. Eating and drinking at The Taste of Folly

The Taste of Folly is an annual event held in Folly Beach , a town located fifteen minutes from downtown Charleston. During this festival, Center Street shuts down to become a place for great food and fun for the whole family. The whole family can attend.

This event is usually held in mid-January on a Saturday. Although admission is free, you need to buy your food and drinks. As a reference, to try the cocktails of one of the competitions you must pay around 19 €.

Besides enjoying live music, in this festival you must be prepared to eat too much. One of the favorite activities is the hot dog eating competition, so you can imagine how much room you have to make in your stomach if you want to participate.

You can also buy food from vendors located along the street or buy local art. Other eye-catching activities include carnival games and auctions. To top it all off, from this site you will have an incredible view of the sunset .

8. Watch the Annual Charleston Half Marathon

The Charleston Half Marathon is an event held every year in mid-January. It is organized by Capstone Races , America's premier running portfolio.

During this event the people of Charleston come together to cheer on the runners and to enjoy the live music that enlivens the race.

Competitors must register for the race well in advance, mostly to prepare. However, you as an attendee don't need much preparation. You just need to attend the site and have a good time with friends . The event's website usually shares the route that the runners will take.

It also usually indicates where the bands will be playing live music . If you want to take the opportunity to attend a concert without paying admission, this is a good opportunity. Enjoy the joy and excitement of the contestants and their families and spend a different day in Charleston.

Traveller Tip To watch the half marathon I recommend wearing comfortable clothes and sunscreen. If possible, bring a folding chair so you can sit and enjoy the event. Don't forget your water bottle and snacks.

9. Tour the museums of Charleston

Charleston is a city with a wide variety of history and art museums . In many of them you will discover the history of this picturesque South Carolina city and understand why it looks the way it does.

January seems to be a perfect month to take a tour since there are not too many people and you will have the opportunity to appreciate everything more calmly, paying attention to details.

Among the sites you can visit is the Nathaniel Russell House , the home of a merchant and slave trader of the same name.

This site is recognized as the most important neoclassical house in the country . As soon as you enter you will notice that its architecture and design is from another era.

You can also visit the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon , an important building in the history of South Carolina. This is where the first meeting of the state's General Assembly was held.

You can also visit the Gibbes Museum of Art or The Charleston Museum, where you can enjoy artwork, galleries and exhibits .

10. Explore the Charleston City Market

The Charleston City Market is one market in the city that should be in all your plans when you come to Charleston.

It's a place you'll enjoy any time of the year, as you can spend hours browsing all the products. It is usually very crowded, but in January it is less crowded , so you will enjoy your stay at the market more.

At first glance the site does not look like a market, as the building is built in the Greek Revival style. This makes it stand out and be a historical site in the city. Inside the market you can find more than 100 stalls offering clothing, jewelry, food, paintings and much more.

On the market's website you will find maps, a list of restaurants to visit and other useful information that you can use to plan your visit.

The market is open night and day , as well as offering special events from time to time. I recommend that you keep an eye out for updates so that you can spend a different kind of day at this market.

  • Location : 188 Meeting St, Charleston, SC.
  • When to go : Open year-round.

  • Hours : Open daily from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. Closed on Sundays at 5:00 p.m.

What is the weather like in January in Charleston?

During the month of January, Charleston is a very quiet city with rather cold weather. If you travel during this month, be prepared to experience temperatures between 8 °C to 23 °C, but the average is 15 °C. The coldest day may register -1 °C, but this is not very common.

Another important characteristic of this month is its cloudiness. Constantly the sky is mostly cloudy , which helps the cold to be felt a little more. Also, some days can be rainy, so I recommend having a waterproof coat on hand or an umbrella.

On the other hand, January days are short , so be prepared to go to bed earlier. Sunrise is around 7 or 7:30 am, while sunset is around 5 or 6 pm.

What to pack for a visit to Charleston in January

The first things to pack are your sweaters and coats . January continues to bring cold temperatures, so be cautious and keep warm, especially if you're going out to explore the city at night. Keep in mind that you will need more changes of clothes if you are traveling to Charleston for three days or more.

Many of the activities you can do in Charleston involve eating so I think it is wise to wear comfortable clothes , no tight t-shirts or uncomfortable pants. Enjoy all the food and drink at the festivals without overindulging, but comfortably.

It's a good idea to bring medicine for stomach aches or to improve digestion. Remember that sometimes food from other countries, even from other cities, can be heavy if it is the first time you eat it. It is best to be prepared for everything .

15 Best Hotels in Charleston

Here’s where to stay on your next trip to the Holy City.

visit charleston sc in january

Drew Castelhano/Hotel Bennett

Charleston, South Carolina has been voted the top city in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure readers in the World's Best Awards for more than a decade. Its walkability, culinary landscape, cultural offerings, and beauty, both natural and human-made, come together to create a destination that appeals to all kinds of travelers. It also manages to balance a dedication to preserving history while embracing creativity, ambition, and newness throughout its various neighborhoods.

This uniquely Charleston identity even extends to the city’s incredibly diverse and dynamic roster of hotels — where historic mansions and luxury properties operate next to smaller accommodations focused on boutique experiences. Not a single one of the Holy City’s best hotels follows a cookie-cutter pattern; each actively creates a distinct narrative and reason for being.

As both a travel writer and a former Charleston resident, I can attest to the fact that Charleston’s hotels are a big part of the local community. Yes, they accommodate out-of-town guests, but they also use their coveted locations to provide an additional place for locals to get coffee with an old friend, sip cocktails with a book club, or sit down to an elevated dinner, whether it’s a special occasion or a regular date night. This neighborly atmosphere is what produces a hotel scene unrivaled by any other city in the South. Read on to discover the best hotels in Charleston, South Carolina.

Hotel Bennett

Also available to book at Expedia.com

It’s an all-in-one type of property with a rooftop pool, fitness center, spa, and several on-site restaurants.

King Street is known to be busy and loud, especially on the weekends.

“Hotel Bennett is truly Charleston’s best full-service luxury hotel, in my opinion,” says Elizabeth Rhodes , digital special projects editor at Travel + Leisure and native South Carolinian. “In a city full of smaller boutique properties, it stands out with its rooftop pool, spa, massive suites, and four fantastic dining venues.” Part of the Salamander Collection of properties, the 179-room hotel juxtaposes European elegance with Southern glamour, which you’ll experience as soon as you walk through the first-floor rotunda — known for its mural of 18th-century Charleston Harbor painted by Jill Baskin — and into the Grand Court Lobby. While you’ll never run out of places to eat in Charleston, keep the on-property restaurants La Patisserie, Gabrielle, Fiat Lux, and Camellias in mind as you plan your trip. According to Rhodes, “Afternoon tea at the perfectly pink Camellias is a must.”

The Details:

  • Located on King Street in downtown Charleston
  • Wi-Fi, access to the fitness center, and signature amenities are included in your stay
  • 11 miles from Charleston International Airport (CHS)
  • Next to Marion Square, where the Charleston Farmers Market is held weekly
  • Rooms from $331 a night

John Rutledge House Inn

The complimentary full breakfast is the perfect way to start a day exploring Charleston.

Off-street parking is available, but you’ll need to pay an additional $18 a day per car.

For a thoughtful, intimate bed-and-breakfast experience, look no further than the John Rutledge House Inn, which T+L readers ranked No. 4 on the list of Charleston hotels in the 2023 World’s Best Awards . The building itself is highly recognizable from the outside, with its balconies, double entry staircase, and photogenic black-and-white checkerboard sidewalk greeting guests and passersby. The inside, however, is just as welcoming, with rooms and suites outfitted with period antiques, elegant canopy beds, and Italian marble gas fireplaces. It may be tempting to sleep the day away in your comfortable accommodations, but you won’t want to miss the full breakfast — which can be enjoyed in your room or in the courtyard, ballroom, or piazza — the afternoon hors d'oeuvres, or a glass of sherry in the evening.

T+L deputy photo editor Skye Senterfeit called this hotel "a truly special spot in Charleston." She continued, saying, "Every night of my October 2022 stay, I felt more like I was coming home than just coming back to a hotel. There’s history around every corner (inside and out) and always someone impossibly charming waiting to greet you at the desk."

  • Located on Broad Street in downtown Charleston
  • Wi-Fi, breakfast, afternoon tea, light hors d'oeuvres, and 24-hour concierge services are included with your stay
  • 13 miles from Charleston International Airport
  • Some of the best shopping on King Street is just around the corner
  • Rooms from $299 a night

The Spectator Hotel

Also available to book at Hotels.com

The team of personal butlers is there to ensure your stay is seamless — and you experience the best of the best in Charleston.

This part of town is often crowded with tourists visiting popular attractions like Rainbow Row and Charleston City Market.

For an extra-large helping of Southern hospitality, consider The Spectator Hotel for your next trip to the Holy City. “The Spectator stands out with its plush rooms and personal butler service for every guest. The lovely staff of butlers are on hand to help however they can; on my most recent trip in March 2023, that meant tying my boyfriend’s bowtie as we rushed off to a wedding and providing some stellar recommendations for places to eat,” says Rhodes. You can expect this level of service from morning — enjoy the complimentary breakfast delivered right to your room — to night, when it’s time for a celebratory drink.  “I highly recommend grabbing a drink or two in the bar; the friendly bartenders mix up some really inventive and delightful cocktails,” Rhodes adds.

  • Located in the French Quarter in downtown Charleston
  • Room service breakfast, personalized butler service, access to a fitness center, bicycles, and a welcome drink are included with your stay
  • 12 miles from Charleston International Airport
  • The Gibbes Museum of Art and local favorite Harken Cafe are a short walk away
  • Rooms from $289 a night

Wentworth Mansion

The history of the building is apparent on every level, allowing guests to experience what it may have been like to stay in a Gilded Age home.

It’s a smaller property, with only 21 rooms, which isn’t every traveler’s cup of tea.

Wentworth Mansion received top marks in the 2023 World’s Best Awards, coming in at No. 1 on our list of the top hotels in Charleston — and it’s easy to understand why. The hotel is tucked away in Harleston Village, just a few blocks from bustling King Street, ensuring even more peace and privacy in this home away from home. The rooms and suites are all thoughtfully decorated and appointed with fireplaces, making it extra cozy in winter, and guests are encouraged to dine at Circa 1886, the restaurant located in the mansion’s original carriage house. While breakfast is a guest-only experience, anyone can make a dinner reservation.

  • Located in Harleston Village, a quieter neighborhood in downtown Charleston
  • Exclusive access to breakfast in Circa 1886 and the hotel’s cupola and rooftop; Wi-Fi, in-room beverages, and turn-down service are included with your stay
  • Just two short blocks from Colonial Lake Park
  • Rooms from $400 a night

The Restoration

Explore Charleston

The apartment-style hotel rooms are great for extended trips to Charleston.

If you’re driving, you’ll either need to find parking yourself or pay $38 per day for valet parking, which is first-come, first-served.

For unparalleled access to King Street’s shops, restaurants, and bars, book a suite or one of the spacious residences at The Restoration. The hotel has more of an urban aesthetic than other Charleston properties, with modern photo installations and a variety of textures in the common spaces. Still, it doesn’t skimp on comfort. Whether you’re staying for a while — in which case, you’ll want to stay in the aforementioned residences, complete with a full kitchen and living room — or just for a long weekend, make sure you spend some time by the rooftop pool or grab coffee at The Rise Coffee Bar downstairs. To unlock even more amenities, including complimentary breakfast and access to a nearby gym, be sure to join The Restoration’s Insider program by providing your email address on the hotel website.

  • Located on the corner of King and Wentworth Streets in downtown Charleston
  • Wi-Fi, in-room beverages, and late-night cookies are included in your stay
  • The picturesque College of Charleston campus is right down the street
  • Rooms from $284 a night

The Loutrel

The hotel’s atmosphere is more laid-back than pretentious.

Some travelers may prefer a hotel in a location that doesn’t experience as much foot traffic.

Comfortable, spacious, and convenient are just three ways you could describe The Loutrel , which sits on State Street in downtown Charleston, a couple blocks from the water. “As a native South Carolinian, this hotel felt like home when I visited shortly after its opening in fall 2021,” says Rhodes. “I loved the bright and modern Southern design, the super-convenient location near Charleston’s top attractions, and the private rooftop overlooking the city.” The 50-room property is stylish and fresh, balancing elegance with tasteful touches of personality, and its garden-inspired lounge is reminiscent of the greenery and blooms that adorn the stunning architecture in the surrounding neighborhood.

  • Located in the French Quarter of downtown Charleston
  • Bar snacks and beverages, fitness center access, and European-style breakfast are included with your stay
  • You can easily walk to the Waterfront Park and pier
  • Rooms from $233 a night

Zero George

Hack Hargett

Also available to book at Booking.com

You can’t beat a long afternoon sitting on your room’s piazza, wine glass in hand, overlooking the courtyard.

The property sits adjacent to East Bay Street, one of the busier Charleston roads.

If you’ve been dreaming of the ultimate Charleston getaway, Zero George will check every box. Guests enter through the wrought-iron gates, which lead to the expertly manicured grounds, dreamy courtyard, and the three restored historic residences and two brick carriage houses that house the property’s 16 guest rooms and suites (and their shared piazzas). Every second of your experience — from check-in to checkout — will be filled with delightful, decidedly Charleston moments. Mornings begin with a European-style continental style, complete with local Callie’s Biscuits; afternoons are filled with complimentary bike rides through the neighborhood; and at least one night should be spent around a table at The Restaurant + Bar at Zero George.

  • Located in the historic Ansonborough neighborhood in downtown Charleston
  • Daily European-style breakfast, bicycles, evening wine and cheese pairings, off-site gym membership, and Wi-Fi included in your stay
  • Stop by the new International African American Museum , less than a half-mile away
  • Rooms from $379 a night

The Dewberry

The Dewberry Charleston

The rooftop bar, Citrus Club, offers 360-degree views of downtown Charleston.

Both on-site dining options, Citrus Club and The Living Room, are popular spots within the Charleston community, so they may be busy.

The Dewberry is a stalwart character in Charleston, not only housing 154 guest rooms and suites, but also a spa, rooftop cocktail lounge, swanky ground-floor bar, and a shopping experience from Garden & Gun . Each aspect of the eight-story hotel feels like a manifestation of the “quiet luxury” aesthetic. The rooms are designed to answer every need you may have (steamers, custom toiletries, plush bathrobes and slippers, a locally curated minibar), and the decor in the common spaces nod to the city’s charm and history without feeling too heavy or antiquated.

"All of my Mad Men interior design dreams came true the second I stepped into this mid-century modern hotel in April 2023," said T+L senior commerce editor Kayla Becker. "There's an undeniable level of old Southern charm here in the most glamorous, modern way. Trust me, you will want to remodel your home after you visit."

  • Located on Meeting Street, just west of Marion Square, in downtown Charleston
  • Bicycles, Volvo house cars, fitness studio, beach towels and totes, and Wi-Fi are included in your stay
  • 11 miles from Charleston International Airport
  • Within walking distance of Charleston’s best restaurants, including The Ordinary and The Darling Oyster Bar
  • Rooms from $314 a night

Post House Inn

Travel + Leisure / Lindsey Harris Shorter

The property’s seven rooms are all bright, airy, and uniquely decorated.

It’s a short 10-minute drive from downtown Charleston’s restaurants and attractions.

The only hotel on this list not located in downtown Charleston, Post House Inn is a destination in and of itself. The inn, and its connected restaurant, sit on one of the most picturesque corners in the Old Village Historic District in Mount Pleasant. From the team behind Basic Projects — who also brought Basic Kitchen to life — the properties were developed to be more akin to “a pub with rooms,” a common setup in the U.K., instead of a hotel with a restaurant. Since opening in late 2020, it’s become a favored spot for locals searching for a relaxing staycation, or just a great burger and a strong cocktail.

  • Located in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant, just 10 minutes from downtown Charleston
  • Welcome drink, breakfast, Wi-Fi, and beach towels are included in your stay
  • 14.5 miles from Charleston International Airport
  • Stretch your legs by walking to Pitt Street Bridge for sunset
  • Rooms from $255 a night

The hotel’s creativity allows for surprise-and-delight moments in every room and common space; it’s also dog-friendly.

If you’re searching for a traditional Southern hotel, this isn’t the location for you.

The Vendue is housed in a row of historic warehouses dating back to 1780, but its interiors — including its 84 guest rooms — are bright, bold, and modern. Billed as “Charleston’s art hotel,” there’s a sense of whimsy everywhere you look, from the French bulldog door knockers and a contrasting red-and-white color scheme to its continually rotating collection of over 200 pieces of original art. In-house art curators even offer daily guided tours from 5 to 6 p.m., although guests and even non-guests are welcome to admire the pieces at any time.

  • Welcome drink, morning bag of baked goods, evening milk and cookies, afternoon art reception, and bicycles are included in your stay
  • Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, and the Pineapple Fountain are a short walk away
  • Rooms from $173 a night

Lindsay Shorter / Emeline

Each of the guest rooms comes with a workspace — so it’s a great option for remote workers or those traveling for business.

Self-parking isn’t exactly easy in this part of town, and it’ll cost you $49 a day to valet your car.

Upon opening in downtown Charleston in July 2020, Emeline quickly became one of the “it” places to stay in the Holy City. All 212 guest rooms — 128 of which are suites — come with a king-sized bed, bespoke embroidered Matouk linens and towels, custom ceramic vanity accessories by a local artist, and custom Wildsam Field Guides to Charleston, among other exclusive amenities. Like many other Charleston hotels, food and beverage are a top priority for the hospitality team. Stop by Clerks for breakfast or a quick cup of coffee, The Den for light bites and pre-dinner cocktails, and Frannie & The Fox for a hearty wood-fired pizza and shared plates.

  • Located on Church Street, slightly north of the French Quarter, in downtown Charleston
  • Welcome cocktail, morning coffee, bicycles, fitness center, self-serve sparkling water, and free beer and wine during the “Captain’s Hour” are included with your stay
  • Snap a photo of the nearby Pink House Gallery before grabbing a few snacks at goat.sheep.cow

Planters Inn

The shared piazza, with its wrought-iron bistro tables and chairs, is a lovely choice for a not-too-humid Charleston afternoon.

Expect heavy foot traffic outside, as the hotel sits on the corner of two of Charleston’s busiest streets.

Coming in at No. 3 on the list of T+L readers' favorite hotels in Charleston in the 2023 World’s Best Awards, Planters Inn ranked just behind The Loutrel and just above John Rutledge House Inn. This high placement is partially due to the history of the grande dame hotel; Planters Inn has roots dating back to the 1800s, and it claims the title of the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in South Carolina. Its rank also stems from the property’s hospitable interiors and unforgettable dining experiences. The guest rooms strike that perfect balance between traditional and contemporary, with four-poster mahogany beds and working fireplaces living alongside a Nespresso machine and other must-have amenities. If you’re celebrating something special, be sure to order the famous Ultimate Coconut Cake from the Peninsula Grill — and yes, you can get it delivered via room service, too.

  • Located on the corner of Market and Meeting Streets in Charleston’s Historic District
  • Shared terrace and Wi-Fi are included in your stay
  • Head slightly southeast to discover Church Street’s impressive architecture and peaceful strolls
  • Rooms from $495 a night

The rooms are extra spacious; even those traveling with multiple bags won’t feel overly cramped.

For some travelers, its prime location off of King Street will be a plus; others may find it overwhelming.

The Pinch is a 25-room property — inclusive of three furnished residences — that also features a spa, daily breakfast, and several restaurants, including The Quinte, a 40-seat oyster bar, and Lowland Tavern, a newly opened tasting room experience. While you’re certainly welcome to book a room for a night or two, accommodations are also available on a weekly or monthly basis, if desired. The rooms and restaurants are spread out across three buildings, which date back to the mid-to-late 1800s; the interior decor, however, manages to highlight that history and simultaneously bring a bit of levity and freshness to the property.

  • Located just off of King Street in downtown Charleston
  • Welcome cocktail, coffee and tea service, and bike share program are included in your stay
  • Within a few steps of King Street’s best shops and boutiques

The Ryder Hotel

The hotel has ADA-accessible rooms, elevators, and an ADA pool lift.

The poolside bar-restaurant, Little Palm, can get pretty buzzy.

Jack Kerouac’s semi-fictional character Japhy Ryder, from his novel "The Dharma Bums," is the inspiration behind The Ryder Hotel , which entered the Charleston scene in the spring of 2021. The building had a previous life as the King Charles Inn, but this new chapter takes a completely new direction, with formality thrown out the window. The Ryder stands on its own two feet in the downtown area with its 91 rooms decked out in pale woods, custom-woven rugs, and plush linens. The star of the show, however, just might be the pool and its indoor-outdoor bar and restaurant, Little Palm, where tropical drinks take precedence on the menu. "The cocktails at Little Palm are some of the best — and most creative — in Charleston, and the bar is perfectly Instagrammable in shades of pink and green," says Rhodes.

  • Located a block away from King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston
  • Coffee, a $10 breakfast credit, access to Emeline’s fitness center, a welcome cocktail, bicycles, in-room wellness equipment, and beach and picnic blankets are included in your stay
  • Plan ahead and reserve a table at neighboring FIG
  • Rooms from $184 a night

The Palmetto Hotel

The Palmetto Hotel Charleston

With breakfast taken care of each morning, you’ll have more room in your budget for dinner or shopping on King Street.

Your stay includes access to a nearby fitness center, but it’s not technically on-property.

The newest face in the Charleston hotel landscape, The Palmetto Hotel opened in the spring of 2023. Each of its 45 king-bed rooms was designed to bring guests an “elevated experience without missing the comforts of home.” This means you can expect features like high-end linens, Bamford toiletries, and cozy robes and slippers upon arrival, and you’ll get to enjoy a complimentary breakfast every morning. Before heading out for the evening, stop by the Lobby Bar for signature cocktails and light bites; you’ll even find local favorite Callie’s Pimento Cheese on the menu.

  • Located on East Bay Street, within walking distance of the Battery in downtown Charleston
  • Continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, nightly turn-down service, and bicycles are included in your stay
  • The Battery and White Point Gardens are a 15-minute walk from the hotel
  • Rooms from $207 a night

Know Before You Go

  • Understand the general layout of Charleston. When most people think of Charleston, they envision the Historic District’s 18th and 19th-century architecture, cobblestoned streets, and palmetto trees that give the lower part of the peninsula its memorable charm. Many of the hotels on this list are located in this part of Charleston, but the city is bigger and more spread out than you might think. Before making a hotel reservation, pull up your Google Maps and make sure you’ll be in an area conducive to your planned itinerary.
  • Check the calendar to avoid peak weekends. Charleston experiences tourism all year round, but there are a few periods each year that see more activity, thus increasing demand for hotel rooms. Major events like Charleston Wine + Food , SEWE , Spoleto Festival USA , and College of Charleston’s graduation weekend significantly boost the number of visitors exploring the downtown area.
  • Consider the amenities of each property. In order to stand out from the competition, most Charleston hotels offer some sort of special amenity, be it complimentary beach cruisers, a personal butler service, morning coffee, or a rooftop pool. If you’re deciding between two or three properties with similar locations and nightly rates, let the amenities be the deciding factor.

How We Chose These Hotels

For this article, each hotel was chosen based on editor reviews, appearances in various Travel + Leisure awards, and the writer’s experience with Charleston’s hospitality scene. Lydia Mansel grew up visiting the Holy City every summer and recently spent several years as a full-time resident.
