The 55 Most Beautiful Places in the World

From cloud forests to glacial lakes, these destinations are the world's best sights to see.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

tourist places images

There are never-ending reasons to travel, but many go to seek those awe-inspiring moments that stop them in their tracks, searching for the sights that will stay with them forever. Every day, travelers find those experiences among the ruins of Machu Picchu or at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

From sky-blue lakes in Canada to sandstone beaches in Seychelles, beauty abounds in every corner of the Earth. Focusing largely on national parks , mountains, beaches, deserts, and other natural wonders , we’ve compiled the world's most beautiful places to inspire your next dream destination.

Join us for a journey to some of the most beautiful places in the world, like the red rocks of the Grand Canyon and the abundantly colorful Great Barrier Reef.

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

There's no better way to experience Patagonia's rugged natural beauty than in Torres del Paine National Park . The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is home to its namesake granite towers (the park's name is an amalgam of the Spanish word for “towers” and the Tehuelche word for “blue”), as well as sparkling lagoons and otherworldly glaciers.

Bagan, Myanmar

It's hard to truly grasp the magnitude of Bagan Archaeological Zone , dominated by thousands of temples, pagodas, and stupas. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site on a bike (or e-bike to cover even more ground). For an eagle's-eye view, take a hot-air balloon ride at sunrise to see the temples scattered across the lush landscape.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, Costa Rica

This magical, misty, and well-preserved cloud forest in northwestern Costa Rica is the ultimate template for sustainable ecotourism. Along with its sister cloud forest, Santa Elena Reserve, Monteverde is a practically untouched paradise home to thousands of plant, animal, and bird species (including the radiant quetzal), visible from jungle paths and nail-biting steel bridges hanging over the canopy.

Anse Source d'Argent, Seychelles

Pinpointing the most beautiful Seychellois beach is like splitting hairs, but Anse Source d'Argent gets extremely high marks for its sugar-white sand framed by dramatic granite boulders and sparkling aquamarine water. The sweet shoreline is relatively secluded from the resort crowds on La Digue Island.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

Offering some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet, the Grand Canyon truly merits the term "breathtaking." The vast geologic wonderland, one mile deep and up to 18 miles across, displays countless layers of colorful rock and practically hypnotic vistas.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls spans the Zimbabwe and Zambia borders. "The smoke that thunders," as it is known to locals, and its surroundings, are hubs for white-water rafting, helicopter rides, big-game safaris , and other thrilling adventures.

Whitehaven Beach, Australia

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Whitehaven Beach is arguably one of the loveliest shores in the world. Part of Australia's Whitsunday Coast, the star attraction is remarkable for its amazing combination of pure silica sands and vivid blue-green waters.

Avenue of the Baobabs, Madagascar

On a dirt road near Madagascar's west coast is a stretch of enormous baobab trees, all that remains of a once-dense forest. The centuries-old giants are especially magnificent cast in the light of a sunrise and sunset.

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia

The world's largest salt flat covers 4,000 square miles of the Bolivian Altiplano. In the dry season, it's an endless white sheet of salt tiles made all the more dazzling by clear, sunny skies. From December to April, however, regular rains create a mirror effect that merges lake and sky. No matter when you see it, Salar de Uyuni is one of the most captivating sights on earth.

Hạ Long Bay, Vietnam

With hundreds of jungle-covered karsts springing out of emerald green waters, Hạ Long Bay is a photographer's dream. Hop on a boat or kayak to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site 's beautiful islands and surreal cave systems.

Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Lake Atitlán in the Sierra Madres offers a combination of Indigenous culture, waterside serenity, and yoga bliss. Cross the gorgeous crater lake by boat and explore various pueblos, shop local markets for Mayan crafts, and sleep in treehouse accommodations .

Le Morne Brabant, Mauritius

A freestanding basaltic mountain hulking over a bright blue-green Indian Ocean lagoon certainly makes spectacular scenery. When viewed from above, the surrounding sand and silt form an optical illusion that appears to be a massive underwater waterfall at this mythic place. Thanks to its isolation and near-inaccessibility, Le Morne sheltered people who escaped enslavement during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Acadia National Park, Maine

From rocky shorelines shrouded in mist to conifer-cloaked mountainsides, Acadia is a wild place of sea, stone, and forest. Visitors flock here to hike, fish, climb, camp, and experience the end-of-the-world feel in New England's only national park.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

The mighty Okavango, the largest inland delta in the world, is a vast network of winding waterways and animal-attracting lagoons. Navigating through reed-studded channels in a mokoro (traditional canoe) and spotting hippos, leopards, and elephants is one of the world's great travel experiences for nature lovers.

Railay West Beach, Thailand

Dmitrii Guldin / Getty Images

On the Railay peninsula's west side, Krabi's famous karsts meet a simply stunning jade-green lagoon. The vertical cliffs block access from the Krabi mainland, making Railay reachable only by boat, adding to its incredible appeal.

Maasai Mara, Kenya

This famed wildlife preserve (next door neighbor to the Serengeti) is one of the world's most enchanting ecosystems . The Mara's golden grasslands stretch to the horizon, interrupted by graceful acacia trees and rumbling throngs of wildebeest and zebra — and their stalking predators.

Cat Island, The Bahamas

Cat Island is a secret nirvana hiding in plain sight in the Bahamas . Sparsely developed and off the main tourist track, Cat Island is resplendent in miles of nature trails and wondrous pink-sands sprawling under the Caribbean sun.

Zhangye National Geopark, China

Distinct rolling bands of orange, cream, yellow, brown, and russet against jagged mountain peaks make this geological anomaly in Gansu, China look like a psychedelic scene on Mars.

Glencoe, Scotland

The Scottish Highlands are filled with astonishingly scenic glens, but Glencoe is perhaps the most famous (and infamous, due to a brutal 17th-century massacre). Today the valley is a haven for hikers, mountaineers, and whiskey lovers — the 19th-century Ben Nevis Distillery is a short drive away.

Mount Kōya, Japan

The Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi founded this mountaintop temple town in 819. Today, the sacred and serene place is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and contains more than 100 temples, including head temple Kongobuji, featuring gorgeous gilded sliding doors and ceilings carved with flowers. Within the ancient complex is a mausoleum and cemetery surrounded by a cedar forest with old growth trees up to 600 years old.

Dead Sea, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel

Name aside, the Dead Sea is a lake and one of the world's saltiest, at that (in fact, the saline water has such a high density that it keeps bathers afloat). Set between Jordan, Palestine, and Israel at the Earth's lowest elevation, it's known for its beautiful clear and tranquil waters (nearly 10 times more saline than the ocean) and surrounding mineral formations, sandy beaches, nature preserves, natural pools, and waterfalls.

Zion National Park, Utah

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Glorious Navajo Sandstone cliffs, rainbow-colored canyons, and incredible biodiversity make Zion one of the most popular (and most scenic) national parks in the U.S.

Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

Dominated by a 3,000-square-mile ice cap of the same name, Vatnajökull is a chilly, Icelandic wonderland of caves, craters, glacier-filled calderas, and waterfalls. Perhaps the most famous falls is Svartifoss, surging over hexagonal lava-rock columns.

Pamukkale, Turkey

Pamukkale's electric-blue thermal pools and white travertine formations, naturally formed by slowly crystallizing calcium carbonate, make for gorgeous vacation photos.

Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, Hawaii

Nā Pali translates to "the cliffs" in Hawaiian, a deceptively simple name that might not fully prepare travelers for the epic glory on view. The staggering coastline is too rugged and vertical for road access, so the only way to see it is by boat, air, or seriously intense hiking trails.

Table Mountain, Cape Town

Ascending iconic Table Mountain tops the list for most travelers in Cape Town. Adventurous hikers can go on foot, but there's also an aerial cableway that gently sweeps up to the 3,563-foot summit. Either way, the top offers insane panoramic views of the South African capital and the Atlantic.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Built nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Incan citadel whose engineering ingenuity and head-spinning views rival the extraordinary beauty of its Sacred Valley setting.

Lucerne, Switzerland

Picture a serene alpine lake fringed with soaring Alps. Now add in a walkable medieval town and you've got the setting for this long-popular Swiss destination . Don't miss Mount Pilatus (via the world’s steepest cogwheel railway) and the Rigi for nature trails and a famous viewpoint overlooking three lakes.

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia

The Blue Ridge Parkway may lack Highway 101's ocean scenery, but it trades Pacific views for peaceful Appalachian beauty. Stretching 469 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Shenandoah National Park , the 45 MPH, no-trucks route winds past overlook after overlook, letting road-trippers marvel at the mountains' dreamy blue hue.

Pulau Tioman, Malaysia

This isn't a tropical island getaway with a wild party scene or string of upscale resorts. Pulau Tioman is more of a floating nature preserve, with local character and a strong sense of environmental conservation (coral rehab and sea turtle preservation are major focuses for the island's Juara Turtle Project ). The island, off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the South China Sea, is popular for its dive sites, shipwrecks, and tropical rainforest.

Damaraland, Namibia

Damaraland region is an almost-mystical vision of red-earth desert plains, flat-topped mountains, petrified forest, and well-preserved ancient Bushmen rock paintings. Though it looks like a scene from Mars, Damaraland is rich in wildlife, home to lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, and the critically-endangered black rhino.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina and Brazil

Altogether, the 275 cascades on the Argentina -Brazil border form a mind-blowing, panoramic waterfall. The overwhelming sight, combined with the sound and energy of water rushing at up to 450,000 cubic feet per second in the rainy season, is pure magnificence.

Matira Beach, French Polynesia

The South Pacific calls up many visions of spectacular beaches . Bora Bora 's Matira Beach gets singled out for its miles of pearly white, flour-fine sand and breathtaking bright turquoise lagoon.

Cirque de Gavarnie, France

Cirque de Gavarnie is a popular hiking destination in the Pyrenees, and one of its most beautiful. Called "the colosseum of nature" by Victor Hugo, the Cirque is a ring of sheer granite mountain walls enclosing a picture-perfect green valley. It's astounding even before you add in three-tier Gavarnie Falls pouring over a 922-foot drop.

Shark Bay, Australia

Shark Bay: where the red earth of Australia's westernmost point meets the teal waters of the Indian Ocean. The bay is home to one of the largest and richest beds of seagrass in the world, as well as stromatolites — rocky-looking, cauliflower-shaped microbial reefs and some of the oldest life forms on Earth.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten archipelago bursts dramatically out of the Norwegian Sea. Between the jagged peaks and steep slopes are quaint fishing villages, secluded coves, scenic backpacking and biking trails, and dreamy white-sand beaches.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Flanked by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, Los Cabos ' symphony of natural features — desert, mountains, sea, and plenty of sunshine — and yes, raucous party scene, have made it one of the most popular vacation destinations in North America. Its cobalt blue waters are a hub for diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, and whale watching.

Taormina, Sicily

Laura La Monaca/Travel + Leisure

Taormina has all the elements for a gorgeous Mediterranean destination : ancient ruins, a charming old town, and a setting backed by Mount Etna, an active volcano you can summit by foot.

Dal Lake, India

The snow-capped Zabarwan Range rise above Kashmir's romantic Dal Lake, a long-time Himalayan escape for Indians fleeing the south's heat. During the summer, veranda-clad cedar houseboats bob along the lake's western edge while floating markets and brightly-painted taxi boats drift by.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The world's largest barrier reef is an unrivaled experience for snorkelers and divers. The sensational underwater world is made up of 2,900 individual reefs, 900 islands, and a mind-boggling diversity of marine life.

Fairy Meadows National Park, Pakistan

Near the foot of the world's ninth-highest mountain (Nanga Parbat), Fairy Meadows offers sublime mountain scenery and wildlife, including brown bears, markhor, and Himalayan ibex. Be forewarned: The road to get there has been dubbed the second deadliest road on the planet by the World Health Organization. To get to Fairy Meadows, you’ll have to be escorted by locals, in groups of six people at a time.

Wulingyuan Scenic Area, China

Thousands of tapering quartz sandstone formations spiral skyward in this 100-square-mile stretch of karst terrain. Beneath the towers lie valleys, streams, waterfalls, caves, natural bridges, and dense green forest.

Banff National Park, Canada

Canada's oldest national park showcases the majesty of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta. Banff is known for its staggering peaks, dense pine forests, hot springs, animals (grizzlies, bighorn sheep, and moose all call the park home), and almost eerily azure glacier-fed lakes, such as the postcard-perfect Peyto Lake.

Wadi Rum Reserve, Jordan

Wadi Rum is a stunning red-desert landscape filled with canyons, dunes, mountains, springs, archeological sites, and stone archways (brave hikers can cross the largest, Burdah Rock Bridge, which is more than 200 feet above the ground).

Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, New Zealand

Glaciers carved this awe-inspiring valley , leaving behind craggy peaks with sheer drops into glistening waters. Part of UNESCO World Heritage Site Te Wahipounamu , Milford Sound is blessed with waterfalls, rainbows, rainforest, and a diversity of wildlife — everything from black coral to bottlenose dolphins, with seals and even penguins in between.

Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

Blissfully isolated 217 miles off the Brazilian mainland, this lovingly-preserved archipelago offers pristine beaches and clear waters abundant in marine life perfect for world-class snorkeling.

The Algarve, Portugal

Surrounded by the Atlantic to the south and west, Portugal's Algarve region looks and feels like a wild respite. Wind-sculpted cliffs and headlands frame big, sandy beaches popular with surfers and dotted with secret coves and grottoes.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Solitary Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Africa's most stunning icons, rising more than 19,000 feet from coffee and banana farms up to snowy volcanic peaks. Along the way, hikers trek through distinct climate zones, from rainforest to high-altitude desert to the arctic-like summit (aka "the roof of Africa").

Mount Fuji, Japan

Both an active volcano and an icon of serenity, Mount Fuji is one of the world's most magnificent sights. You can hike to the sacred landmark's summit for sweeping views or simply gape at it from Lake Kawaguchi and elsewhere in the beautiful Five Lakes region . Head to the spa town of Hakone in winter to pair crisp Fuji views with steaming hot springs.

Li River, China

The Li River carves through the lowland farms and jagged karst terrain of northwestern Guangxi, creating some of China's most picturesque scenery (the area is so pretty, it appears on the 20 yuan banknote). A four- to five-hour river cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the most popular way to experience Li River, though travelers wanting more autonomy can rent bamboo rafts or hike — the natural moon-shaped arch of Moon Hill makes a glorious lookout.

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como has been one of Italy's most popular vacation spots since the time of the Roman emperors. This unabashedly high-rolling resort area still attracts a posh crowd with its lush gardens, cinematic palaces and villas, and sun-soaked alpine shores. Take the funicular to the tiny village of Brunate for an amazing panorama.

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Like so many of Earth's most stunning sights, Crater Lake is the result of earth-altering, volcanic forces. Its 1,943-foot depth makes it the deepest lake in the U.S. , filled with mesmerizingly deep blue waters fed by rain and snow. View its perfection from hiking trails, boat tours, and the 33-mile Rim Drive around the caldera. (Keep in mind, some attractions like boat tours and the scenic Rim Drive close for the winter season.)

Big Sur, California

Makito Umekita/Travel + Leisure

Even considering California's 840 miles of monumental coastline, it's hard to rival the beauty of Big Sur . Thick redwood forest, foggy canyons, and rocky cliffs tumbling into the Pacific define this area (the name refers to both the town and the coastal region), made all the more famous for its freewheeling NorCal vibes and Old Hollywood history.

Great Smoky Mountains, North Carolina and Tennessee

With half a million acres split by Tennessee and North Carolina, this famous park 's wondrous mountain scenery encompasses hardwood forests, steep-sided ravines cut through by rivers and streams, and brilliant wildflowers in bloom from spring to fall. Hikers have 150 trails available to them, from the Appalachian Trail’s Charlies Bunion hike to the more challenging Rainbow Falls route.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The scenery alone — waterfalls, calderas, misty bamboo forests — makes Volcanoes National Park a worthy contender of any travel list. The mystical setting is all the more special for hosting buffaloes, birds, golden monkeys, and the elusive mountain gorilla.

40 Stunning Images Of The Most Historic Places On Earth

Posted: February 28, 2024 | Last updated: February 28, 2024

From crumbling ruins peeking through the fog, to higgledy-piggledy cobbled streets and majestic ancient castles, these spellbinding images show off the beauty of some of the world’s most historic places. These photos were originally the shortlisted entries in the Historic Photographer of the Year Awards 2022, run by History Hit in partnership with Historic England. Here, we’ve included our favorite shortlisted and winning entries.

One of just six operational transporter bridges left in the world, Newport Transporter Bridge is essentially a suspended ferry, with a boom that allows ships to pass underneath, and a railway track on which a moving carriage operates. One of just a few historic wind-powered mills in the UK that remains intact, Thurne Mill is a drainage mill – designed to drain the marshes for farmers – and is now over 200 years old. Photographer Jay Birmingham was shortlisted for this gorgeous image, which he captured "at dawn, with the soft glow of the rising sun lighting it up, diffused by the morning mist."

Thurne Mill, Norfolk, England, UK

Dating back to the 13th century, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels was built by the Knights Templar. It's made totally mesmerizing in this shot by Bella Falk, which shows light shining through the stained-glass windows to create a kaleidoscopic image on the historic walls. Judge Fiona Shields said, "I absolutely love the play of light from the stained glass windows creating such a glorious scene."

Church of Our Lady of the Angels, Pollença, Mallorca

Situated on the Welsh side of the River Wye, Tintern Abbey was originally founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks, but the majestic Gothic architecture we see here today was created in the late 13th century. Sam Binding, who captured the photograph, said: "As I arrived, the sun had crept over the adjacent hills, spreading rays through the central section of the abbey. If you look closely, you may be able to see what looks like a mysterious cloaked figure in the lower section..."

Tintern Abbey, Tintern, Wales, UK

This grand landmark in Brighton was used as a seaside retreat for King George IV during the 18th century, when the city was becoming a popular resort. Here, the majestic structure, which was built using a combination of Indian, Mughal, European and Chinese architectural styles, becomes even more spellbinding against a backdrop of dramatic clouds.

Royal Pavilion, Brighton, England, UK

Little-known to most people, the Grade II-listed Sandfields Pumping Station offers a fascinating insight into Britain's industrial heritage, showing how communities accessed clean water during the Victorian era. Judge Philip Mowbray praised the "stunning" interior shot, adding, "the generally dark look and framing make it feel like a hidden treasure that's being discovered."

Sandfields Pumping Station, Lichfield, England, UK

Clearly a magnet for photographers, Newport Transporter Bridge featured twice in this year's awards, in two strikingly different images. During the Cold War, Orford Ness was used as a site for developing atomic bombs – these two 'pagodas' were used for testing the components of these nuclear weapons. Today, the disused site has become a landmark on the Suffolk coast and it's beautifully captured in this sunrise shot by London-based photographer Martin Chamberlain.

Drone technology has allowed us to see historic places in incredible new ways, as in the case of this spectacular shot by Alan Blackie. It shows this Grade II-listed mausoleum, which was built in the 18th century and lies around a third of a mile (500m) from Seaton Delaval Hall, a stately home which is owned by the National Trust.

Seaton Delaval Hall Mausoleum, Northumberland, England, UK

A hotspot for urban explorers enticed by eerie ruins, La Petite Ceinture is a former railway line circling around Paris, which was used to transport passengers by steam train between 1852 and 1934. Since then, it's been deserted and has become inundated with up to 200 species of flora and fauna, as well as scrawling graffiti. The shortlisted image was taken by Liverpool-based photographer Paul Harris.

The charming Cotswolds village of Bibury takes on an altogether spookier look in this atmospheric shot, which was taken by Vitalij Bobrovic. Sitting on a small island in Pembrokeshire's Milford Haven Waterway, Stack Rock Fort is a three-gun fort built between 1850 and 1852. Captured here by Steve Liddiard, who described it as "a true time capsule of British military history", the landmark looks all the more striking against gray skies with birds circling overhead.

There are two beacons which grace this stretch of the Essex coastline: the High and Low lighthouse, both of which were built in 1863 to guide vessels around Languard Point. In this serene image, photographer Mark Roche highlights their architectural beauty, with the beacon casting a stark silhouette against the blues, indigos and violets of sunset.

Dovercourt Lighthouse, Essex, England, UK

Shipwrecks have long fascinated photographers and the SS-Carbon, situated at Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight, is certainly no exception. The former tug boat crashed into the rocks here in 1947, after a towering line snapped while it was being towed between Portland and Southampton to be used as salvage. Dorchester-based photographer Scott Macintyre ventured here at low tide to take the shot, in which a mist-covered ocean adds to the shipwreck's haunting feel.

Check out these haunting images of the world's most famous shipwrecks

Constructed during the Second World War between 1942 and 1943, the Maunsell Fort at Whitstable in Kent is considered one of the most complete army-commissioned sea forts that remains in the UK. Judge Rich Payne described this image, which was captured by George Fisk, as "striking", adding that "the towers look other-worldly, like props from some long-forgotten sci-fi film."

Located at the edge of the lake at Coates Water Park, this Grade II-listed Art Deco diving board has lain abandoned for decades and it's become a popular spot for birds. Judge Claudia Kenyatta praised Iain McCallum's "emotive" monochrome image, saying: "Swindon has a history of leisure swimming through the ages and this beautiful photograph of the interwar era platform remind us of the past history of Swindon’s fondness for swimming."

Photographer Edyta Rice said it took "many attempts" to get the perfect image of Corfe Castle in misty conditions, adding that "rising sun, a golden glow and shadows falling behind the towers" eventually combined to give her the dream shot. Shrouded in early-morning fog in this spectacular shot, Derwent Isle is a small island that sits in the middle of Derwent Water in the Lake District. The patch of land has had various uses over the centuries: in the 16th century it was inhabited by a group of German miners who came to work in the area, then in the 18th century Joseph Pocklington built a house, a small chapel and a fort on the island. Today, you can book a tour to the house to learn more about its former inhabitants.

Corfe Castle is such a hotspot for photographers that two entries on the shortlist feature the historic landmark, although the photographs are starkly different. Luke Stackpoole depicts the UNESCO site in all its glory here, with a lone figure in the foreground acting as an arresting focal point in the composition.

In the heart of a tranquil loch tucked in the forest of Rothiemurchus, Loch An Eilein is a tiny island topped with the ruins of a 13th-century castle. Many visitors choose to take the popular three-mile (5km) walk around the lake, looking out for red squirrels, Scottish crossbills and other wildlife along the way before stopping for a picnic. Here, Danny Shepherd shows the ruins' unique, mystical beauty through aerial photography.

18 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in the USA

Written by Lana Law Updated Sep 16, 2022

The United States is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and some of the most recognizable icons on the planet . Many of the top attractions in the United States are bucket list destinations, drawing visitors from around the world.

Compiling a list of places to see is step one. But keep in mind, given the size of the United States, most people plan their trips to a specific region, be it the East Coast, the Southwest, the beaches of Florida or California , or outlying regions like Hawaii and Alaska.

You may want to see the city sights, or head out to the top parks and natural areas in the US . In some cases, you can easily combine the two if you plan a day trip or two.

Plenty of options await you, with incredible sights sprinkled across the country. For anyone in the enviable position of having unlimited time and resources, these are the top attractions to include on your US itinerary.

1. Grand Canyon

2. niagara falls, 3. statue of liberty, 4. white house, 5. walt disney world resort, 7. las vegas strip, 8. yosemite national park, 9. golden gate bridge, 10. times square, 11. freedom trail in boston, 12. yellowstone national park, 13. san antonio river walk, 14. kennedy space center, 15. st. louis arch, 16. glacier national park and the going-to-the-sun road, 17. mount rushmore national memorial, 18. sedona's red rock country.

Grand Canyon

This incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.

The South Rim , about 4.5 hours by car from Las Vegas, is the most visited section of Grand Canyon National Park. This is where you'll find a large visitor center, regular bus service along the Rim in the high season, and a walkway that runs along the canyon with numerous viewing points and platforms. Several wonderful hikes , including the Bright Angel Trail, leave from here.

Grand Canyon

The Skywalk , a glass bridge leading out over the edge of the Grand Canyon is another popular attraction. It is located at Eagle Point, on the West Rim . This area is about a four-hour drive from the South Rim, but usually less than a 2.5-hour drive from Las Vegas. If you are planning a day trip from Las Vegas, this area is a good option

The North Rim, which also has lookout areas, provides a different perspective. This section of the park is less visited and has limited access from November to May due to snow and winter conditions.

Niagara Falls

Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world . The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop.

Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.

Views are good on both sides of the river, but the Canadian side gives a very different perspective and is worth a visit if you don't mind crossing the border into Canada.

View of American Falls in winter from the Canadian side

Summer is the most popular time to visit Niagara Falls, when the weather is warm, gardens are in bloom, and wandering around is pleasant. Winter provides a unique opportunity to see the snow-covered shores and ice-covered railings, street signs, and trees. It's truly a winter wonderland.

On clear days, the plume of mist rising from Niagara Falls can be seen from as far away as the CN Tower in downtown Toronto, Canada, on the opposite shore of Lake Ontario.

Las Vegas Strip

Walking along the Las Vegas Strip, the main street leading through the city past the mega resorts, is like strolling through an amusement park for adults. Recreations of the New York skyline, the Eiffel Tower, the canals of Venice, and many more foreign sites line this famous street.

Beginning at one end with the Luxor Hotel, designed in a pyramid shape, a walk down the street will reveal an erupting volcano and dancing fountains, while inside the resorts are all kinds of oddities and entertainment. Many of the best things to see and do in Las Vegas are sights that can be seen for free.

One of the main attractions in Las Vegas is the constant lineup of shows. World-famous singers looking to settle down turn to Las Vegas as a home base, where they perform regularly. Unique performing groups from magic to comedy and acrobatics can also be found here nightly.

When you've had enough of the nightlife and city lights, you can still explore the nearby attractions on a day trip from Las Vegas . See nearby Death Valley National Park, Hoover Dam, or Valley of Fire State Park. Explore the desert on hiking trails around Las Vegas , some of which are just minutes from downtown.

Yosemite National Park

One of America's most loved parks, Yosemite National Park is one of the best places to visit in California , particularly for nature lovers. Famous sights, like the incredible granite domes of El Capitan and Half Dome, have to be seen in person to fully appreciate their grandeur. The massive waterfalls that tumble off sheer cliffs from mountain snowfall or sudden summer rainstorms are another of the park's highlights.

Yosemite National Park is full of activity-based things to do that include hiking, climbing, walking, and horseback riding. Hiking trails in Yosemite lead to some of the most scenic areas and are a good way to escape the crowds at lookouts.

View of Half Dome from Glacier Point

For those less inclined to be physically active, the sheer natural beauty of Yosemite can be enjoyed from a picnic table over a leisurely home-packed lunch. You can also see the highlights on a driving tour through the park.

Accommodation is limited in the park to several lodges and a number of very nice campgrounds . Outside the gates, more options are available.

Golden Gate Bridge

Arching across San Francisco Bay, joining San Francisco and Marin County, the Golden Gate Bridge has been a California icon since it was built in the 1930s. Contrasting with the blue water, the bridge's orangish-red color is an aesthetic accent that brings a unique quality to the city.

It also has a unique presence when it's shrouded in fog with just the peaks of the main towers projecting through the low-lying cloud. The bridge is approximately two miles long and part of Hwy 101 or SR 1. If the day is clear, one of the best viewing spots is on Conzelman Road, located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Times Square

Bustling Times Square, famous for its flashing billboards, New Year's Eve count down, and constant throngs of people, lies at the heart of Midtown Manhattan. This intersection, in normal times, is really about the energy one feels when standing on the corner as taxi cabs rush by and lights flash overhead, rather than any individual site on the square.

While it is an interesting place to visit during the day, it is probably best seen at night to experience the full impact.

Freedom Trail in Boston

Boston's Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walking route that leads past some of the city's most important historical attractions. A line of red bricks, inlaid in the sidewalk marks the route, making it an easy way for tourists to find their way around.

Glacier National Park

Montana's Glacier National Park offers some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the United States. Mountains, lakes, glaciers, valleys, and waterfalls combine to form a spectacular alpine landscape.

One of the best ways to truly appreciate the terrain is from the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road. This narrow road, hugging the mountain side as it winds its way up and over the 7,747-foot Logan pass, opened in 1932.

Due to the elevation and climate, the road is only open during the summer months. The sights along this road are superlative, and you'll likely find yourself stopping at handy pullouts to soak it all up.

Glacier National Park also has some unique historic lodges, including the East Lodge, with it's huge timbered interior. The park is also a top hiking destination in the state. Hiking trails lead to wonderful alpine vistas if you're willing to put in a bit of effort.

The park is relatively isolated, so most people plan to visit for a few days. Accommodation is available in the historic lodges and hotels in West Glacier, and if you feel like camping in Glacier National Park , 13 campgrounds are available.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

If you find yourself in South Dakota, don't miss a chance to see Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Towering above the surrounding forest are the faces of four US Presidents: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt.

This incredible achievement was created by one man, John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, and upon his death, finished off by his son Lincoln. The hard work of carving giant heads out of stone started in 1927 and continued on for many years until its completion in 1941.

The national memorial is a popular attraction, especially in the summer. Try to plan to arrive early in the day to avoid the crowds.

Hiking in Sedona

Just a wonderfully scenic two-hour drive from Phoenix, this small city has quickly become one of Arizona's top places to visit .

Located off the coast of Queensland on the largest of the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach mesmerizes visitors with its bright white silica sand and turquoise water. When they're not snapping photos of their surroundings, beachgoers can swim in the clear water or walk to noteworthy spots like Hill Inlet – a shallow inlet on the northern end of the beach – and Chance Bay, which is a quieter area south of the beach that overlooks Pentecost Island. Keep in mind, though, this 4-mile-long stretch of sand is only accessible by boat, helicopter or seaplane from Hamilton Island (the most popular inhabited island in the Whitsundays) and Airlie Beach on the mainland. Consider staying at Hamilton Island's five-star qualia resort for luxurious waterfront accommodations. The hotel staff can assist with booking excursions to Whitehaven Beach, as well as scuba diving tours of the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef .

If your perfect beach vacation spot features postcard-worthy topography and lots of solitude, look no further than Cannon Beach. In this Pacific Northwest town about 80 miles northwest of Portland , you'll discover nearly 4 miles of shore with jaw-dropping rock formations jutting out of the Pacific Ocean. Head to the center of the beach between Ecola Creek and Tolovana Park to gaze at Haystack Rock, a 235-foot-tall sea stack known for its vibrant tide pools and puffin colony. You can even build a fire on the beach to relax beside while watching the sun set. When you need a break from the beach, walk to downtown Cannon Beach to browse its art galleries, boutiques and eateries. Or, retreat to one of the town's inns, lodges or resorts. Two traveler-approved options within steps of the beach include the Stephanie Inn and The Ocean Lodge.

Horseshoe Bay Beach: Bermuda

Horseshoe Bay Beach

Visit Horseshoe Bay Beach to put a unique spin on your next beach getaway. Situated on Bermuda 's South Shore, this pink sand beach – made of a blend of crushed coral – is one of the island's most popular stretches of sand. Families come here to splash in its calm turquoise water and build blush-colored sandcastles. Meanwhile, active travelers love exploring its hidden coves, trekking its trails to Warwick Long Bay , and enjoying water sports like snorkeling and paddleboarding (loaner equipment is available for a fee). Horseshoe Bay Beach's proximity to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse also makes it a prime spot to unwind after you climb the 117-foot-tall structure. Don't forget to save time for a snow cone or rum swizzle (Bermuda's national drink) from the on-site Rum Bum Beach Bar before retiring for the evening at the nearby Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club , one of the area's top beach resorts .

Mohegan Bluffs: New Shoreham, Rhode Island

A beautiful beach after a steep cliff on Block Island at the Mohegan Bluffs

What the beach at Mohegan Bluffs lacks in easy accessibility it more than makes up for in natural beauty. Located at the base of its 200-foot-tall namesake, this Block Island shore offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and – on clear days – New York's Long Island. Upon arrival, pause to admire your surroundings and read about the bluffs' ties to the Indigenous Manissean people. Then, take the 141 steps down to the sand to sunbathe or swim. When you do climb back to the top, you can walk to Southeast Light to get an up-close look at its 19th-century lighthouse, then hop on a bike to explore the island. The lighthouse and beach are both stops on the self-guided Block Island Bicycle Tour. Travelers can end the day with a stay at the Spring House Hotel or the 1661 Inn, two boutique properties with spectacular ocean vistas.

Siesta Beach: Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key Beach at sunset, Sarasota, Florida

Regularly lauded for having one of Florida's best beaches , Siesta Key – which is located less than 7 miles southwest of Sarasota – boasts three gorgeous shorelines, including Siesta Beach. Here, you'll find colorful lifeguard stands sitting on soft sand made almost entirely of quartz, which gives the sand its pure white appearance and keeps it cool to the touch even on the hottest Florida days. Plus, Siesta Beach offers volleyball courts, a playground, concession stands and beach wheelchairs, among other amenities, making it ideal for everyone from families to fitness buffs. When you're ready for a change of scenery, venture a few blocks north to Siesta Key Village to shop, grab a drink or bite to eat, or listen to live music. For lodging, reserve a vacation rental or a room at a boutique hotel like Tropical Beach Resorts .

Reynisfjara: Iceland

Reynisfjara, a black sand beach in Vik, south coast of Iceland, in winter, at sunset.

Though you may not think of Iceland as a beach vacation destination, its abundance of volcanoes sets the stage for an otherworldly beach experience. The country is home to several black sand beaches made from volcanic ash, but the most striking is Reynisfjara in South Iceland . At this desolate beach, you'll discover jet-black sand, an enormous cave, giant offshore rock formations and a series of stacked basalt columns that will all take your breath away. Plus, the beach offers proximity to Vík, a seaside village known for its Icelandic Lava Show – the world's only opportunity to safely observe molten lava – and outdoor adventures like glacier hikes and ice cave treks. If you time your visit right, Reynisfjara and other black sand beaches can make a great spot to see the northern lights in Iceland . Accommodations by Reynisfjara are limited, so consider making a daytrip from popular hotels like The Retreat or the Silica Hotel, which both overlook Iceland's world-renowned Blue Lagoon and sit about 30 miles southwest of Reykjavik .

Hidden Beach: Marietas Islands, Mexico

Seascape of the Mexican Pacific

This beach on Mexico's Marietas Islands – off the country's western coast – is truly a hidden gem. Only accessible by boat from tourist hot spots like Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita, Hidden Beach wows visitors with its soft sand, crystal-clear water and one-of-a-kind location. Upon arrival, beachgoers must swim or kayak through a long water tunnel to reach the secluded beach, which sits within an exposed cave reportedly used for bombing drills during World War I. The unique layout makes the beach incredibly photogenic, as well as a haven for all kinds of wildlife. Birders can look for blue-footed boobies from the sand, while snorkelers should keep their eyes peeled for dolphins, turtles and even humpback whales. Following your visit, travelers can unwind back on the mainland at a chic all-inclusive resort like Hotel Mousai or IBEROSTAR Selection Playa Mita .

The Baths: Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

Beautiful tropical beach with white sand, turquoise ocean water and blue sky at Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands in Caribbean

Head to The Baths in the British Virgin Islands if you crave awe-inspiring vistas everywhere you turn. Located on Virgin Gorda, this stretch of sand is one of the world's most beautiful white sand beaches – and it's easy to see why. Granite boulders tower above the beach and shelter rock pools and caves that you can explore on foot. Follow the path of steps and rope handrails to get to Devil's Bay, a prime place for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. Or, spend the bulk of your time climbing The Baths' massive boulders and cooling off in one of the beach's grottoes. If you're not visiting The Baths on a Caribbean cruise – many of which offer shore excursions to Virgin Gorda when stopping in the British Virgin Islands – choose the luxe Rosewood Little Dix Bay as your on-island home away from home.

Anakena: Easter Island

Easter Island a mystic place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, maybe the most remote area in the world if we take onto consideration the distance to the mainland, Moais standing facing the elements and remembering and old amazing culture

For a truly unique backdrop while sunbathing and swimming, visit Anakena on remote Easter Island. On the island's main beach, you'll find white coral sand, swaying palm trees, and eight broken and intact moai statues. The archaeological treasures sit atop two ahu (stone altars) set near the Pacific Ocean. Contemplate the statues' mysterious origins from up close – according to oral tradition, they mark the arrival of Polynesian settlers, the island's first inhabitants – then head down to the beach to relax on the beautiful sand and in the calm turquoise water. Once you've worked up an appetite, order a tuna empanada or a bowl of poe (a sweet pumpkin- and flour-based pudding) to enjoy picnic-style before exploring other parts of Rapa Nui National Park, which occupies roughly 40% of the island. Although Easter Island accommodations are limited, you'll have a few traveler-approved options to choose from, including Nayara Hangaroa and explora Rapa Nui.

Navagio Beach: Zakynthos, Greece

Aerial of Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) and boats on vibrant blue water in Zakynthos, Greece.

Nicknamed Shipwreck Beach because of the shipwrecked vessel that washed up onto its shore in the 1980s, Navagio Beach boasts a breathtaking setting on the northwestern coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos (also called Zante). What's left of the boat, which sits in the middle of the pebbly beach, is surrounded by vertical cliffs overlooking the turquoise Ionian Sea. Beach activities are limited to swimming and sunbathing. However, Navagio Beach's isolated location – which is only accessible by boat from Porto Vromi – means you'll likely see other noteworthy sights, such as the mesmerizing Blue Caves, on your way to and from the shore. Most Navagio Beach daytrips include hotel transfers from tourist areas like Planos (or Tsilivi) and Zante Town, so plan on staying in one of these locations. Traveler favorites include the Lesante Classic Luxury Hotel & Spa and TUI BLUE Caravel.

Papakōlea Beach: Big Island, Hawaii

most beautiful beaches in the world

Prepare to be wowed by the rare sands that cover this Big Island beauty. One of only four green sand beaches known to exist, Papakōlea Beach is a treat for the eyes. To reach the beach, which sits south of the Mauna Loa volcano on Mahana Bay, you'll have to hike nearly 3 miles down from its parking lot. Though the trek can be challenging, the unique setting is well worth the effort. You'll discover vivid green sand made from olivine deposited during volcanic eruptions, plus impressive gray cliffs and clear blue water. (Note, however, that there are no on-site amenities available at the beach.) After a few hours of lounging – swimming is discouraged due to the strong undertow – check out nearby attractions like the black sand Punalu'u Beach and Kula Kai Caverns. There are limited lodging options nearby, but the towns of Waimea, Kailua-Kona and Hilo are home to dozens of top-notch properties. If you're looking for luxury, base yourself in Waimea at a high-end hotel like the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii .

Tulum Ruins Beach: Tulum, Mexico

The beach and ruins of the Mayan civilization in Tulum, Mexico, on a sunny day.

This beach situated beneath the ruins of Tulum's famed archaeological site provides jaw-dropping views of El Castillo (a cliffside Mayan castle) and the Caribbean Sea. Descend the steps by the castle to get to the stunning white sand beach of Playa Ruinas and swim in its aquamarine waters. To rub elbows with fewer tourists, arrive right when the attraction opens in the morning. Keep in mind that an entrance fee of 85 Mexican pesos (about $4) per person applies. Once you've gotten your fill of the beach and its famous ruins, head to El Gran Cenote to snorkel or peruse the shops, restaurants and bars scattered throughout downtown Tulum . Then, hang your hat at a luxurious waterfront property like Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa or Jashita Hotel . Both sit around 10 miles northeast of the beach.

South Dune Beach: House Harbour Island, Quebec

"Sandstone Cliffs and the Coastline of Magdalen Islands, Quebec. The Magdalen Islands (les de la Madeleine) form a small archipelago in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Though closer to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, the islands form part of the Canadian province of Quebec."

Canada may not seem like an obvious choice for a beach vacation , but South Dune (Dune du Sud) Beach will sway you to think otherwise. Located on House Harbour Island (also called Île du Havre aux Maisons), one of 12 islands that make up the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this beach stands out for its towering red cliffs. Not only do the cliffs provide a gorgeous contrast to the gulf's blue water and the shore's white sand, but they also help shelter beachgoers from the wind, making the beach ideal for a stroll. Plus, you'll have access to picnic tables, should you wish to bring some food to enjoy by the water. Be sure to arrive during low tide so you can explore the cliffs' caves, and don't forget to visit the nearby Cape Alright lighthouse. For lodging, consider Domaine du Vieux Couvent, a charming former convent with around a dozen cozy rooms.

Mayflower Beach: Dennis, Massachusetts

Mayflower Beach in Dennis on Cape Cod. Cape Cod is famous, worldwide, as a coastal vacation destination with some of New England's premier beach destinations

The New England haven of Cape Cod is home to dozens of beautiful beaches, but few impress visitors like Mayflower Beach. At this Mid-Cape beach in the small town of Dennis, beachgoers will find amenities like a picnic area and a boardwalk, as well as plenty of space for beach games. But what sets this shore apart from others is what's exposed at low tide. When the water level drops, tide pools are available for kids to play in. Additionally, tidal flats appear, enabling visitors to walk for miles in ankle-deep water. Those who need a break from the sun can catch a performance at The Cape Playhouse – also in Dennis – or tour the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port. Two top properties located within 15 miles of the beach include The Mansion at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club and Wequassett Resort and Golf Club .

Railay Beach: Thailand

Thai traditional wooden longtail boat and beautiful sand Railay Beach in Krabi province. Ao Nang, Thailand.

Travel to Thailand's Railay Beach area for incredible scenery and plenty of amenities. Overlooking the Andaman Sea from its perch on this peninsula in southern Thailand , this beach destination's four shores feature massive limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water and clean white sand. Head to Railay Beach's northern stretch of sand (known as Ton Sai Beach) to rock climb, or venture to Railay East for a quiet spot to catch a colorful sunrise. If your main objective is to get in the water, you can check out Phra Nang Beach, a southern shore with shallow, calm water ideal for swimming and snorkeling. For those who crave a little bit of everything, there's Railay West. This beach provides countless opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and rock climbing, plus it sits close to restaurants, shops, bars and accommodations. Stay at Railay West's Rayavadee for five-star digs by the sea.

Marinha Beach: Portugal

Landscape with beautiful Praia da Marinha, one of the most famous beaches of Portugal, located on the Atlantic coast in Lagoa, Algarve

Your jaw will instantly drop the moment you arrive here. Situated within southern Portugal 's Algarve region, Marinha Beach (or Praia de Marinha) boasts a hard-to-reach location alongside limestone cliffs. Getting to the beach requires traversing staircases and steep slopes down to the shore. Though this means Marinha Beach isn't suitable for travelers with mobility limitations, its remote location helps prevent overcrowding, meaning you can snap plenty of unobstructed photos. Soak up some sun on the sand, then go snorkeling in the clear water (but remember to bring your own gear, since rentals are not available on-site). If you visit during low tide, you can also walk to additional beaches, sea caves and the famed M-shaped rock formation. After exploring the beach, travelers can sign up for a boat tour to see more sights from the water or unwind at the upscale Vila Alba Resort, which sits about a mile northeast.

Baker Beach: San Francisco

Classic panoramic view of famous Golden Gate Bridge seen from scenic Baker Beach in beautiful golden evening light on a sunny day with blue sky and clouds in summer, San Francisco, California, USA

Within San Francisco 's protected Presidio area, Baker Beach offers easy access to some of the city's best views. From the mile-long shore, visitors will enjoy panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Lands End , the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge . Head to the beach to sunbathe on the clean golden sand (keep in mind that the northern end is clothing-optional), or bring bait and tackle for a day of fishing. Baker Beach's position beneath towering serpentine cliffs also makes the shore a prime spot for hiking, so be sure to save time for a trek on the California Coastal Trail, one of several trails in the Presidio. Although most of the city's top hotels are located in the downtown area, a few noteworthy lodging options sit within 5 miles of Baker Beach, including the sophisticated Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights .

Grace Bay Beach: Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks & Caicos

Grace Bay Beach , a 3-mile-long white sand beach in Turks and Caicos , is incredibly picturesque thanks to its lack of seaweed and rocks. Plus, its position by Grace Bay makes it a terrific option for water activities. Venture a mile offshore to look for parrot fish, reef sharks and more while snorkeling around the barrier reef. Or, stay close to shore to swim in the calm, shallow water. Travelers can enjoy additional water sports (think: paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing) in the surrounding Princess Alexandra National Park by renting equipment via local outfitter Big Blue Collective. Resorts at Grace Bay Beach are easy to find, so plan on staying at a property with direct beach access, such as Seven Stars Resort & Spa or Point Grace .

Anse Source d'Argent: La Digue, Seychelles

Anse Sous d'Argent beach with granite boulders and turquoise sea

Featuring massive rocks, soft white sand, clear blue water and lush tropical vegetation, Anse Source d'Argent is a feast for the eyes. It sits on the island of La Digue in the Seychelles , off the eastern coast of Africa. In either direction, you'll notice gigantic granite boulders perfectly positioned between the water and swaying palm trees. Follow the lead of countless filmmakers and photographers by capturing the beauty of this beach on camera before stretching out on the sand or dipping your toes in the calm water. Aim to arrive during low tide when the water is below your knees and more sand is exposed. Reaching the beach requires passing through L'Union Estate, a former coconut and vanilla plantation that charges an entrance fee of 100 Seychellois rupee (about $7) per nonresident. Lodging is limited on La Digue, so consider taking the ferry from the larger island of Mahé, where the highly regarded Four Seasons Resort Seychelles is located.

South Beach: Miami Beach, Florida

This tropical district on Florida's Atlantic Coast is world-renowned for its glamourous clientele, vibrant nightlife and powdery white sand. Although it is technically part of the greater Miami Beach area, South Beach is set apart by its Art Deco architecture evident in everything from the beachfront lifeguard towers to the high-rise buildings along the famed Ocean Drive . Lummus Park – equipped with sand volleyball courts, children's playgrounds and restroom facilities – flanks the crystalline shores. Situated on the northernmost corner of the park, The Betsy South Beach hotel offers luxury accommodations just a few blocks from the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall , where travelers will find opportunities for top-notch shopping, dining and people-watching.

Carmel Beach: Carmel, California

Sand beach by the Pacific Ocean coastline in Carmel California near Monterey

This laid-back beach town nestled along California's Central Coast harbors a dog-friendly swath of sand lined with trails and perfect for a beach fire. Carmel Beach is also known for its strong swell patterns ideal for surfing – but not so much for swimming, as riptides are common. Visitors who venture inland are treated to a charming village lined with boutiques, eateries and European-style architecture, plus a vibrant artist colony showcasing an array of work from local painters, sculptors and artisans. The historic La Playa Carmel hotel is located within walking distance to both the beach and the downtown district.

Clearwater Beach: Florida

Clearwater beach with beautiful white sand in Florida

Families flock to this beautiful coastline – located on a barrier island about 25 miles west of Tampa – for its plethora of aquatic activities, waterfront restaurants and spacious sunbathing spots on sugar-white sands. Must-see attractions like the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and dolphin watching cruises keep travelers of all ages entertained for days on end. No matter how you choose to spend your time in Clearwater Beach , make sure you end the day by watching a picture-perfect sunset at Pier 60 . Beach parking can be a pesky (and pricey) problem that a resort with direct beach access – such as the SandPearl Resort – can help guests avoid (although resort and parking fees apply).

First-timer’s guide to Bryce Canyon National Park

Lauren Keith

May 8, 2024 • 7 min read

A person walking along a switchback trail in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

The smallest of Utah’s "Mighty 5" national parks, Bryce Canyon packs a big punch. The first time you clap eyes on its iconic hoodoos – those otherworldly rock spires striped with orange, pink and red – is a moment you’ll never forget, even if you’ve seen photos of them before. This incredible park is home to more hoodoos than anywhere else in the world.

Bryce Canyon’s high elevation, averaging more than 8000ft but reaching almost 10,000ft at its loftiest points, gives this national park an edge. The seasonal cycle of freezing and thawing water repeatedly over millennia has transformed the soft sandstone and limestone into an utterly unique landscape. Despite its name, Bryce is not actually a canyon but rather a plateau (a canyon is formed by flowing water).

Epic hiking trails skirt the plateau rim before diving 1000ft down into the forest of alien pinnacles, fragrant juniper trees and centuries-old bristlecone pines. Here is everything you need to know about planning a visit to Bryce Canyon National Park.

When should I go to Bryce Canyon National Park?

More than half of the visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park go between June and the end of September, and for many, summer is the best time to visit. Bryce Canyon’s higher elevation means that the average high temperature in July is a blissful 79°F –a far cry cooler than the average of 100°F in Arches and Canyonlands or nearly 90°F in nearby Zion National Park .

In 2023, Bryce Canyon National Park’s busiest month was September, with 367,425 visitors, while January saw just 29,457 adventurers make the trip. The winter months can bring a powdered-sugar dusting of snow atop Bryce Canyon’s "fairy chimneys," providing an even more magical setting, though some trails and accommodations are closed.

The night sky above Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

How much time should I spend at Bryce Canyon National Park?

Some travelers visit Bryce Canyon as a day trip from Zion National Park (about 80 miles, a 1.5-hour drive from Zion’s east entrance), but it’s worth staying at Bryce Canyon for a full day or two. (How do you choose between Utah’s top national parks? Don’t! See them both.)

Bryce shows off its true colors at sunrise and sunset when the amphitheater of hoodoos looks like it’s been set alight with a golden-red glow. After the sun has departed, Bryce Canyon’s clean, dry air promises excellent nighttime visibility for stargazing, reaching all the way to the Andromeda Galaxy 2.5 million light-years away.

Is it easy to get to and around Bryce Canyon National Park?

Yes, Bryce Canyon is easy to visit if you have a car – it's just a few hours’ drive from the closest airports and major cities.

During the busier months of April through October, shuttle buses are available to get visitors around the park. The shuttle bus is free to ride with park admission and reservations are not required. There are 15 stops, nine of which are in the park; it also stops at some hotels in Bryce Canyon City outside the park entrance, where you can leave your car. Unlike at Zion National Park, the shuttle bus at Bryce Canyon is not mandatory, and visitors are allowed to drive their own vehicles into the park.

Cycling is also a great way to get around, and you can ride a bike to every major trailhead. The paved multi-use path that runs through the park goes to the Inspiration Point overlook and, beyond the park, it connects with the Red Canyon Bicycle Trail, which takes you past even more hoodoos and awesome rock formations outside Bryce’s boundaries.

Female hiker walking on the Queens Garden Trail at Bryce Canyon National Park.

Top things to do at Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos are the stars of the park, and you’ll want to spend as much time as you can gawking at them from every angle and letting your imagination – and your feet – roam. Many hoodoos here have evocative names, such as Thor’s Hammer, Tower Bridge and Silent City, and the Native Paiute believe that the formations are ancient "Legend People" who were turned to stone as punishment for wrongdoing.

The Rim Trail , one of Bryce Canyon’s easiest hikes, traces the upper edge of the plateau, overlooking the bowl of hoodoos below and linking up several viewpoints. While crowds cluster at these viewpoints because they are also accessible by car, you can walk a short distance along the Rim Trail to admire the scene in solitude.

But you can’t leave Bryce without walking among these iconic formations instead of just seeing them from above. A handful of hiking trails leave the rim and descend thousands of feet into the maze of stunningly sculpted high-mountain desert, threading their way through the hoodoos. The most popular hike in Bryce Canyon National Park is the Queen's Garden–Navajo Loop Combination Trail . It hits Bryce’s signature features in a relatively short amount of time and starts (or ends) with an iconic series of switchbacks between high ocher-colored canyon walls.

A quieter and more challenging hiking option is the Fairyland Loop , an eight-mile day hike that gives a good workout thanks to the 1900ft of elevation gain. The trail meanders around hoodoos, down into washes, up and over saddles and past ancient bristlecone pines that cling to the rocky cliffsides for dear life.

My favorite thing to do at Bryce Canyon National Park

There are some seriously epic viewpoints where you can spy on the hoodoos to your heart’s content, but I don’t think any spot is as cool as surveying the scene from a horse saddle. On my last visit to Bryce Canyon, I signed up for a three-hour horse-riding adventure with Canyon Trail Rides , the park's official concessioner, which takes riders out on Peekaboo Loop from April through October.

My horse for the day was an ornery, sandy-colored boy named Twerp, and our guide added amusing commentary, telling stories and pointing out rock formations along the way.

Unless you have your own horse, booking with Canyon Trail Rides is the only way to see this national park from a saddleback perspective. Trail rides book up quickly, so reserve as far in advance as you can. Even if you’re on foot instead of on a horse, the Peekaboo Loop is one of the best hikes in Utah .

How much money do I need for Bryce Canyon National Park?

The standard entrance pass for Bryce Canyon National Park costs $35 per vehicle or $20 per person if you’re visiting on foot or bicycle, and it’s valid for seven days. If you’re visiting more national parks on a road trip through Utah and beyond, it’s worth buying the America the Beautiful pass for $80. It's valid for a year at all national parks and federal recreation land across the country for one vehicle or four per-person entry fees – arguably one of the best travel deals available.

There's a lodge and two campgrounds inside the park. Bryce Canyon Lodge costs from $200 to $330 per night depending on the season and size of the room. Campgrounds cost $30 a night for both tents and RVs. At certain times of the year, campsites are first-come, first-served, but in the busiest season (mid-May to mid-October), you must book at recreation.gov in advance.

An RV driving under a rocky arch in Bryce Canyon National Park

What is the closest city to Bryce Canyon National Park?

Bryce Canyon City sits at the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. Calling it a city is generous, but it has a handful of hotels and restaurants. The towns of Tropic and Cannonville, east of Bryce Canyon National Park, have a few more options for both accommodations and eating.

Where’s the best place to stay near Bryce Canyon National Park?

Bryce Canyon National Park has two in-park campgrounds, as well as the historic Bryce Canyon Lodge , which opened in 1925 and is perfectly set between the Sunrise Point and Sunset Point scenic overlooks, offering trailheads on your doorstep. Try to book a cabin if one is available – these spots are more charming than the motel-style rooms, which feel a little dated (but not in a cute way).

South of Cannonville, Bryce Glamp & Camp has gorgeous geodesic domes that feel like a home away from home, with kitchenettes, full bathrooms and plush mattresses. Wind down in the evening at your own outdoor gas firepit, watching the fading sunset light play on the quiet red-rock landscape.

9 Places Straight Out of a Disney Movie That You Can Visit

By Katherine McLaughlin

The Forbidden City in China

Disney’s theme parks do an incredible job of bringing fictional worlds to life—places like Cinderella Castle, Space Mountain, and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. But did you know there are also many real places that look like they could’ve come directly from the pages of a Disney animator’s sketchbooks? Around the world, these charming locales offer the opportunity to live out a real-life fairytale. In fact, many of them served as inspiration for the villages and communities featured in movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Moana, and Mulan. Below, nine charming places that look like they are from a Disney movie.

A version of this article originally appeared in Architectural Digest .

Castle Hohenzollern Wintertime

Castle Hohenzollern

Akershus Fortress in Oslo was said to have inspired Anna and Elsa’s home, Arendelle Castle, in Frozen . However, Hohenzollern Castle in Hohenzollern, Germany , looks like the ice palace Elsa retreats to in the film. The resemblance only grows in the winter, when snow covers the trees that surround it.

Upolu, Samoa

Disney’s Moana takes place on a fictional Polynesian island, though it’s safe to assume animators referenced a number of real places in the South Pacific . The To Sua Ocean Trench, pictured here, is among the most famous swimming holes on Upolu in Samoa. It’s hard to deny that the enchanting scene looks like a place where magic is bound to happen.

Strasbourg traditional halftimbered houses in La Petite France

Alsace, France

Full of quaint homes with pitched roofs and half-timbered façades, Alsace , in France, is one of the most picturesque regions in the country. Located on the west bank of the Rhine River, the area inspired Belle’s hometown in Beauty and the Beast.

Alczar de Segovia

Alcázar de Segovia

The Alcázar de Segovia in Spain has existed since the 12th century and is among the most prominent medieval castles in the world. Spanish locals long believed that the structure was the inspiration behind the evil queen’s castle in Snow White and Seven Dwarfs. The Alcázar is unique among defensive structures of its day, as its shape resembles a ship.

The Forbidden City in China

Forbidden City

The Forbidden City in Beijing , China, served as a vital muse to the Disney team when working on Mulan. In the movie, Mulan travels to a fictional Imperial City, where she fights against Shan Yu.

Mont SaintMichel in Normandy

Mont Saint-Michel

Located in France ’s Normandy region, Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island, only accessible on foot during low tide. At the top of the isle is a 16th century abbey, often credited as serving as the inspiration for the castle of Rapunzel’s parents in Tangled.

Trees of the Louisiana Swamp

Bayou Country, Louisiana

Cypress and tupelo trees, Spanish moss, and murky, near-still water are all mainstays of the bayou in Louisiana . The Princess and the Frog was set here, though the real place proves to be just as enchanting as it’s depicted on the screen.

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre, Italy

Dotted with colorful homes and defined by turquoise water, the Italian Riviera has long appeared like the perfect setting for a Disney movie. In 2021 it finally happened. Luca , one of Disney and Pixar’s more recent creations, is set in a seaside town in Italy that bears a striking resemblance to Cinque Terre.

Autumn landscape panorama with a view to Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein, a 19th-century palace near the Alps in Schwangau, Germany , is often credited as the muse for Cinderella’s castle, arguably Disney’s most iconic fictional design. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the real palace as a retreat and payed for it with his own private funds. However, he died before construction was completed and never had the chance to live in it.

NASA’s Orion Capsule Heat Shield Wore Away in More Than 100 Places During 2022 Test Flight, Posing ‘Significant Risks’

A new report highlights safety issues that NASA must address before using the spacecraft to send astronauts to the moon, and the agency is already working on fixing the problems

Three boats tug the Orion spacecraft in the ocean

NASA’s Orion spacecraft, intended to carry astronauts to the moon in the next couple of years, experienced a number of issues during its 2022 uncrewed test flight, the agency’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) said in a report released Wednesday.

“The test flight revealed anomalies with the Orion heat shield, separation bolts and power distribution that pose significant risks to the safety of the crew,” the report states. And in regards to the heat shield problem, “should the same issue occur on future Artemis missions, it could lead to the loss of the vehicle or crew.”

The inspector general recommends a number of steps the agency should take before the first flight with astronauts, scheduled for no sooner than September of next year. NASA agreed with the proposed actions, and in a statement accompanying the report, the agency says it has already been working on the issues identified.

“NASA is concerned that the report’s tone might suggest that the OIG identified the risks discussed, when in fact, all recommendations were already being addressed by NASA through forward risk-based disposition prior to the audit,” Catherine Koerner , NASA associate administrator for exploration systems development, writes in the statement.

The Orion capsule launched to space on November 16, 2022, as part of NASA’s Artemis 1 mission , the first in a series of missions intended to eventually land humans on the moon’s surface. During the 25.5-day flight, the uncrewed vehicle orbited the moon, performed two lunar flybys and returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on December 11.

Artemis 2 will carry astronauts around the moon on a ten-day flight, while Artemis 3 will bring astronauts near the lunar south pole for the first time. But in January, NASA announced that both missions would be delayed , with launch dates no sooner than September 2025 and September 2026.

NASA cited the need to ensure crew safety as the primary reason for the delays, and the agency said in January that engineers were working to address issues with a battery and with circuitry necessary for temperature control and air ventilation in the crew capsule.

The new report from the inspector general highlights the problems with Orion’s heat shield. NASA found that protective “char layer” material from the heat shield wore away unexpectedly during reentry in more than 100 locations, according to the report. The material cracked and broke off the spacecraft in pieces, creating a trail of debris, instead of melting away as it was supposed to.

“It’s not what we were expecting, with some pieces of that char to be liberated from the vehicle,” Amit Kshatriya , NASA’s Moon to Mars program’s deputy associate administrator, said during a January teleconference announcing the Artemis delays, per Space.com ’s Brett Tingley.

The spacecraft heats up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit during reentry—about half as hot as the surface of the sun. The chipping away of material could mean the crew and Orion spacecraft aren’t adequately protected from this heat. And the flying debris could also damage the capsule’s parachutes, the report states.

Kshatriya said at an April 26 NASA meeting that understanding the heat shield performance was the biggest risk for Artemis 2, per Space News ’ Jeff Foust. NASA is conducting experiments that seek to re-create the char loss from the heat shield. “We’re getting close to the final answer in terms of that cause,” Kshatriya said at the meeting.

Some bolts on Orion also unexpectedly melted and eroded. NASA has made small changes to the bolt design in advance of Artemis 2. But the bolts’ performance is dependent on how NASA addresses the heat shield issue, the report notes.

Other problems included power distribution anomalies in the spacecraft’s electrical power system, which NASA has attributed to radiation and is making software changes to address.

The launch of the spacecraft also caused more damage than expected to the mobile launcher , the ground system used to assemble and launch the spacecraft. Elevators, electrical equipment, tubing and other structures incurred damages costing $26 million to fix—more than five times the $5 million NASA had set aside for repairs.

“The Artemis 1 test flight revealed critical issues that need to be addressed before placing crew on the Artemis 2 mission,” the report states.

When announcing delays of the Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 missions, agency officials noted they would not rush the Artemis 2 launch, writes the Washington Post ’s Christian Davenport.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson recently told a congressional committee that the agency still thinks they can land a human on the moon by late 2026, per the publication.
