One of just six operational transporter bridges left in the world, Newport Transporter Bridge is essentially a suspended ferry, with a boom that allows ships to pass underneath, and a railway track on which a moving carriage operates. The landmark, which first opened in 1906, is shown in a new light in this stunning image by Itay Kaplan, which was shot during early-morning fog just after sunrise.

The royal castle, which was established by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and was partially destroyed during the English Civil War (1642–1651), is one of Dorset 's most famous historic landmarks.

Standing on an isolated headland on the Northumberland coast, Dunstanburgh Castle is a recognizable fortress which dates back to 1313. Today, the enchanting ruins can be seen via a popular coastal walk from the nearby village of Craster, although few are brave enough to venture down there at night, as Paul Byers did to capture this awe-inspiring shot. He said: "It was one of the calmest experiences I have experienced in a long time", as he waited for the Milky Way Core to rise in the early hours of the morning.

While tourists flock to Brighton 's newer Palace Pier for fairground rides and candyfloss, photographers are generally more taken in by the skeletal remains of West Pier. Opened in 1866 but destroyed by storms and fires, the eerie remains of the landmark look especially poignant in this impressive shot by Darren Smith, with two ghostly figures making an appearance on the shore.

One of the most elaborate temples in the ancient city of Petra, the Treasury (known as al-Khazneh in Arabic) was built some 2,000 years ago yet remains incredibly well-preserved today. You can still make out some of the intricate carvings on the facade, which include two large eagles, two lions and the Egyptian goddess of Isis, although several figures are yet to be identified. Bass Rock Lighthouse was built in 1901 to guide ships through the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth. It sits on an enormous crag which rises up to 350 feet (107m) out of the ocean, and has played host to a number of different residents over the years, including fishermen and lighthouse keepers. But none are more prevalent than the swarms of seabirds that use it as a nesting ground, which include puffins, guillemots, razorbills and eider ducks. The historic spot looks full of life in this gorgeous image, shot by Bella Falk.

Bristol-based photographer Sam Binding took home the top prize in the Historic England category for this captivating image of Glastonbury Tor. Binding said, "the low-lying levels are prone to mist, and so with a good forecast I headed out very early that morning. When I arrived, I was in for a very nice surprise. As the sun rose up, a wave of mist swept up and over the top of the Tor, creating an incredibly ethereal scene."

This incredible natural attraction is one of the most visited places in the United States. Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, creating dramatic cliff walls and ledges. Visitors standing on the rim of the canyon can see down to the canyon floor a mile below, and look out over the ridges and cliffs that run as far as the eye can see.

The South Rim , about 4.5 hours by car from Las Vegas, is the most visited section of Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim, which also has lookout areas, provides a different perspective. This section of the park is less visited and has limited access from November to May due to snow and winter conditions.

Situated along the Canada-US border, Niagara Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the world . The water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario over these massive waterfalls, known for the great quantity of water that is constantly tumbling over the vertical drop.

Niagara Falls is actually a set of three falls: It consists of the largest section, known as Horseshoe Falls, with a drop of 187 feet; a second section on the American side of the river, known as the American Falls, with a drop of 89 feet; and a much thinner section located next to the American Falls, known as Bridal Veil Falls, with a drop of 78 feet.

Views are good on both sides of the river, but the Canadian side gives a very different perspective and is worth a visit if you don't mind crossing the border into Canada.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Niagara Falls, when the weather is warm, gardens are in bloom, and wandering around is pleasant. Winter provides a unique opportunity to see the snow-covered shores and ice-covered railings, street signs, and trees. It's truly a winter wonderland.

The archaeological treasures sit atop two ahu (stone altars) set near the Pacific Ocean. Contemplate the statues' mysterious origins from up close – according to oral tradition, they mark the arrival of Polynesian settlers, the island's first inhabitants – then head down to the beach to relax on the beautiful sand and in the calm turquoise water. Nicknamed Shipwreck Beach because of the shipwrecked vessel that washed up onto its shore in the 1980s, Navagio Beach boasts a breathtaking setting on the northwestern coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos (also called Zante). Most Navagio Beach daytrips include hotel transfers from tourist areas like Planos (or Tsilivi) and Zante Town, so plan on staying in one of these locations. Traveler favorites include the Lesante Classic Luxury Hotel & Spa and TUI BLUE Caravel.

Papakōlea Beach: Big Island, Hawaii

Prepare to be wowed by the rare sands that cover this Big Island beauty. One of only four green sand beaches known to exist, Papakōlea Beach is a treat for the eyes. To reach the beach, which sits south of the Mauna Loa volcano on Mahana Bay, you'll have to hike nearly 3 miles down from its parking lot. Though the trek can be challenging, the unique setting is well worth the effort. You'll discover vivid green sand made from olivine deposited during volcanic eruptions, plus impressive gray cliffs and clear blue water. (Note, however, that there are no on-site amenities available at the beach.) After a few hours of lounging – swimming is discouraged due to the strong undertow – check out nearby attractions like the black sand Punalu'u Beach and Kula Kai Caverns. There are limited lodging options nearby, but the towns of Waimea, Kailua-Kona and Hilo are home to dozens of top-notch properties. If you're looking for luxury, base yourself in Waimea at a high-end hotel like the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii .

Tulum Ruins Beach: Tulum, Mexico

This beach situated beneath the ruins of Tulum's famed archaeological site provides jaw-dropping views of El Castillo (a cliffside Mayan castle) and the Caribbean Sea. Descend the steps by the castle to get to the stunning white sand beach of Playa Ruinas and swim in its aquamarine waters. To rub elbows with fewer tourists, arrive right when the attraction opens in the morning. Keep in mind that an entrance fee of 85 Mexican pesos (about $4) per person applies. Once you've gotten your fill of the beach and its famous ruins, head to El Gran Cenote to snorkel or peruse the shops, restaurants and bars scattered throughout downtown Tulum . South Dune Beach: House Harbour Island, Quebec

At this Mid-Cape beach in the small town of Dennis, beachgoers will find amenities like a picnic area and a boardwalk, as well as plenty of space for beach games. But what sets this shore apart from others is what's exposed at low tide. When the water level drops, tide pools are available for kids to play in. Additionally, tidal flats appear, enabling visitors to walk for miles in ankle-deep water. Those who need a break from the sun can catch a performance at The Cape Playhouse – also in Dennis – or tour the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port. Follow the lead of countless filmmakers and photographers by capturing the beauty of this beach on camera before stretching out on the sand or dipping your toes in the calm water. Aim to arrive during low tide when the water is below your knees and more sand is exposed. Reaching the beach requires passing through L'Union Estate, a former coconut and vanilla plantation that charges an entrance fee of 100 Seychellois rupee (about $7) per nonresident. Lodging is limited on La Digue, so consider taking the ferry from the larger island of Mahé, where the highly regarded Four Seasons Resort Seychelles is located.

The smallest of Utah’s "Mighty 5" national parks, Bryce Canyon packs a big punch. The first time you clap eyes on its iconic hoodoos – those otherworldly rock spires striped with orange, pink and red – is a moment you’ll never forget, even if you’ve seen photos of them before. This incredible park is home to more hoodoos than anywhere else in the world.

Bryce Canyon’s high elevation, averaging more than 8000ft but reaching almost 10,000ft at its loftiest points, gives this national park an edge. The seasonal cycle of freezing and thawing water repeatedly over millennia has transformed the soft sandstone and limestone into an utterly unique landscape. Despite its name, Bryce is not actually a canyon but rather a plateau (a canyon is formed by flowing water).

Epic hiking trails skirt the plateau rim before diving 1000ft down into the forest of alien pinnacles, fragrant juniper trees and centuries-old bristlecone pines. Here is everything you need to know about planning a visit to Bryce Canyon National Park.

When should I go to Bryce Canyon National Park?

More than half of the visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park go between June and the end of September, and for many, summer is the best time to visit. Bryce Canyon’s higher elevation means that the average high temperature in July is a blissful 79°F –a far cry cooler than the average of 100°F in Arches and Canyonlands or nearly 90°F in nearby Zion National Park .

In 2023, Bryce Canyon National Park’s busiest month was September, with 367,425 visitors, while January saw just 29,457 adventurers make the trip. The winter months can bring a powdered-sugar dusting of snow atop Bryce Canyon’s "fairy chimneys," providing an even more magical setting, though some trails and accommodations are closed.

How much time should I spend at Bryce Canyon National Park?

Some travelers visit Bryce Canyon as a day trip from Zion National Park (about 80 miles, a 1.5-hour drive from Zion’s east entrance), but it’s worth staying at Bryce Canyon for a full day or two. (How do you choose between Utah’s top national parks? Don’t! See them both.)

Bryce shows off its true colors at sunrise and sunset when the amphitheater of hoodoos looks like it’s been set alight with a golden-red glow. After the sun has departed, Bryce Canyon’s clean, dry air promises excellent nighttime visibility for stargazing, reaching all the way to the Andromeda Galaxy 2.5 million light-years away.

Is it easy to get to and around Bryce Canyon National Park?

Yes, Bryce Canyon is easy to visit if you have a car – it's just a few hours’ drive from the closest airports and major cities.

During the busier months of April through October, shuttle buses are available to get visitors around the park. The shuttle bus is free to ride with park admission and reservations are not required. There are 15 stops, nine of which are in the park; it also stops at some hotels in Bryce Canyon City outside the park entrance, where you can leave your car. Unlike at Zion National Park, the shuttle bus at Bryce Canyon is not mandatory, and visitors are allowed to drive their own vehicles into the park.

Cycling is also a great way to get around, and you can ride a bike to every major trailhead. The paved multi-use path that runs through the park goes to the Inspiration Point overlook and, beyond the park, it connects with the Red Canyon Bicycle Trail, which takes you past even more hoodoos and awesome rock formations outside Bryce’s boundaries.

Top things to do at Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos are the stars of the park, and you’ll want to spend as much time as you can gawking at them from every angle and letting your imagination – and your feet – roam. Many hoodoos here have evocative names, such as Thor’s Hammer, Tower Bridge and Silent City, and the Native Paiute believe that the formations are ancient "Legend People" who were turned to stone as punishment for wrongdoing.

The Rim Trail , one of Bryce Canyon’s easiest hikes, traces the upper edge of the plateau, overlooking the bowl of hoodoos below and linking up several viewpoints. While crowds cluster at these viewpoints because they are also accessible by car, you can walk a short distance along the Rim Trail to admire the scene in solitude.

But you can’t leave Bryce without walking among these iconic formations instead of just seeing them from above. A handful of hiking trails leave the rim and descend thousands of feet into the maze of stunningly sculpted high-mountain desert, threading their way through the hoodoos. The most popular hike in Bryce Canyon National Park is the Queen's Garden–Navajo Loop Combination Trail . It hits Bryce’s signature features in a relatively short amount of time and starts (or ends) with an iconic series of switchbacks between high ocher-colored canyon walls.

A quieter and more challenging hiking option is the Fairyland Loop , an eight-mile day hike that gives a good workout thanks to the 1900ft of elevation gain. The trail meanders around hoodoos, down into washes, up and over saddles and past ancient bristlecone pines that cling to the rocky cliffsides for dear life.

My favorite thing to do at Bryce Canyon National Park

There are some seriously epic viewpoints where you can spy on the hoodoos to your heart’s content, but I don’t think any spot is as cool as surveying the scene from a horse saddle. On my last visit to Bryce Canyon, I signed up for a three-hour horse-riding adventure with Canyon Trail Rides , the park's official concessioner, which takes riders out on Peekaboo Loop from April through October.

My horse for the day was an ornery, sandy-colored boy named Twerp, and our guide added amusing commentary, telling stories and pointing out rock formations along the way.

Unless you have your own horse, booking with Canyon Trail Rides is the only way to see this national park from a saddleback perspective. Trail rides book up quickly, so reserve as far in advance as you can. Even if you’re on foot instead of on a horse, the Peekaboo Loop is one of the best hikes in Utah .

How much money do I need for Bryce Canyon National Park?

The standard entrance pass for Bryce Canyon National Park costs $35 per vehicle or $20 per person if you’re visiting on foot or bicycle, and it’s valid for seven days. If you’re visiting more national parks on a road trip through Utah and beyond, it’s worth buying the America the Beautiful pass for $80. It's valid for a year at all national parks and federal recreation land across the country for one vehicle or four per-person entry fees – arguably one of the best travel deals available.

There's a lodge and two campgrounds inside the park. Bryce Canyon Lodge costs from $200 to $330 per night depending on the season and size of the room. Campgrounds cost $30 a night for both tents and RVs. At certain times of the year, campsites are first-come, first-served, but in the busiest season (mid-May to mid-October), you must book at recreation.gov in advance.

What is the closest city to Bryce Canyon National Park?

Bryce Canyon City sits at the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. Calling it a city is generous, but it has a handful of hotels and restaurants. The towns of Tropic and Cannonville, east of Bryce Canyon National Park, have a few more options for both accommodations and eating.

Where’s the best place to stay near Bryce Canyon National Park?

Bryce Canyon National Park has two in-park campgrounds, as well as the historic Bryce Canyon Lodge , which opened in 1925 and is perfectly set between the Sunrise Point and Sunset Point scenic overlooks, offering trailheads on your doorstep. Try to book a cabin if one is available – these spots are more charming than the motel-style rooms, which feel a little dated (but not in a cute way).

South of Cannonville, Bryce Glamp & Camp has gorgeous geodesic domes that feel like a home away from home, with kitchenettes, full bathrooms and plush mattresses. Wind down in the evening at your own outdoor gas firepit, watching the fading sunset light play on the quiet red-rock landscape.

Luca , one of Disney and Pixar’s more recent creations, is set in a seaside town in Italy that bears a striking resemblance to Cinque Terre.

Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein, a 19th-century palace near the Alps in Schwangau, Germany , is often credited as the muse for Cinderella’s castle, arguably Disney’s most iconic fictional design. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the real palace as a retreat and payed for it with his own private funds. However, he died before construction was completed and never had the chance to live in it.

NASA’s Orion Capsule Heat Shield Wore Away in More Than 100 Places During 2022 Test Flight, Posing ‘Significant Risks’

A new report highlights safety issues that NASA must address before using the spacecraft to send astronauts to the moon, and the agency is already working on fixing the problems

NASA’s Orion spacecraft, intended to carry astronauts to the moon in the next couple of years, experienced a number of issues during its 2022 uncrewed test flight, the agency’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) said in a report released Wednesday.

“The test flight revealed anomalies with the Orion heat shield, separation bolts and power distribution that pose significant risks to the safety of the crew,” the report states. And in regards to the heat shield problem, “should the same issue occur on future Artemis missions, it could lead to the loss of the vehicle or crew.”

The inspector general recommends a number of steps the agency should take before the first flight with astronauts, scheduled for no sooner than September of next year. NASA agreed with the proposed actions, and in a statement accompanying the report, the agency says it has already been working on the issues identified.

“NASA is concerned that the report’s tone might suggest that the OIG identified the risks discussed, when in fact, all recommendations were already being addressed by NASA through forward risk-based disposition prior to the audit,” Catherine Koerner , NASA associate administrator for exploration systems development, writes in the statement.

The Orion capsule launched to space on November 16, 2022, as part of NASA’s Artemis 1 mission , the first in a series of missions intended to eventually land humans on the moon’s surface. During the 25.5-day flight, the uncrewed vehicle orbited the moon, performed two lunar flybys and returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on December 11.

Artemis 2 will carry astronauts around the moon on a ten-day flight, while Artemis 3 will bring astronauts near the lunar south pole for the first time. But in January, NASA announced that both missions would be delayed , with launch dates no sooner than September 2025 and September 2026.

NASA cited the need to ensure crew safety as the primary reason for the delays, and the agency said in January that engineers were working to address issues with a battery and with circuitry necessary for temperature control and air ventilation in the crew capsule.

The new report from the inspector general highlights the problems with Orion’s heat shield. NASA found that protective “char layer” material from the heat shield wore away unexpectedly during reentry in more than 100 locations, according to the report. The material cracked and broke off the spacecraft in pieces, creating a trail of debris, instead of melting away as it was supposed to.

“It’s not what we were expecting, with some pieces of that char to be liberated from the vehicle,” Amit Kshatriya , NASA’s Moon to Mars program’s deputy associate administrator, said during a January teleconference announcing the Artemis delays, per Space.com ’s Brett Tingley.

The spacecraft heats up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit during reentry—about half as hot as the surface of the sun. The chipping away of material could mean the crew and Orion spacecraft aren’t adequately protected from this heat. And the flying debris could also damage the capsule’s parachutes, the report states.

Kshatriya said at an April 26 NASA meeting that understanding the heat shield performance was the biggest risk for Artemis 2, per Space News ’ Jeff Foust. NASA is conducting experiments that seek to re-create the char loss from the heat shield. “We’re getting close to the final answer in terms of that cause,” Kshatriya said at the meeting.

Some bolts on Orion also unexpectedly melted and eroded. NASA has made small changes to the bolt design in advance of Artemis 2. But the bolts’ performance is dependent on how NASA addresses the heat shield issue, the report notes.

Other problems included power distribution anomalies in the spacecraft’s electrical power system, which NASA has attributed to radiation and is making software changes to address.

The launch of the spacecraft also caused more damage than expected to the mobile launcher , the ground system used to assemble and launch the spacecraft. Elevators, electrical equipment, tubing and other structures incurred damages costing $26 million to fix—more than five times the $5 million NASA had set aside for repairs.

“The Artemis 1 test flight revealed critical issues that need to be addressed before placing crew on the Artemis 2 mission,” the report states.

When announcing delays of the Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 missions, agency officials noted they would not rush the Artemis 2 launch, writes the Washington Post ’s Christian Davenport.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson recently told a congressional committee that the agency still thinks they can land a human on the moon by late 2026, per the publication.
