Def Leppard and Journey Unite for Massive U.S. Stadium Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Journey and Def Leppard are teaming up for a massive U.S. summer stadium tour, and they’re bringing Cheap Trick, Steve Miller Band, and Heart with them at various spots along the way. Expect a night of mega Eighties hits like “Don’t Stop Believin,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Faithfully,” “Photograph” and (depending on where you live) “The Flame,” “Abracadabra,” and “These Dreams.”

“Having just completed a sensational 18 month run promoting our Diamond Star Halos album,” Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott said in a statement, “we shall hit the boards running with a brand-new stage show and set of songs that will celebrate specific parts of our history. We may even have a surprise or two up our sleeves … so, wanna join us !??! … See you in the summer !”

Journey guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain have spent the past year battling each other in the court system and the press, but it somehow hasn’t slowed down the band’s touring machine. They crisscrossed the country with Toto last year, and they’re playing arenas together again in the early months of 2024.

Poison’s Bret Michaels also added: “There are not enough words to thank the three generations of fans for making this such an exciting, record breaking, historical tour with the fastest sell outs in history at these stadiums.”

Joan Jett grew up during a time when rock ‘n’ roll was off limits to girls and women, but as a teenager, she promptly blew the door to the boys’ club right off its hinges. After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece ‘GI.’ Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 40 years later, Blackheart is a thriving entertainment company producing music, film and television, and continues to champion emerging bands. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue touring the globe with headlining shows alongside fellow rock legends like The Who, Green Day, Heart, and Foo Fighters. After two COVID-19 postponements, the group will return to the road in summer 2022 for The Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Poison. ‘Bad Reputation,’ a documentary about Jett’s life, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is now available for streaming.

“We are so excited to be back out on the road! We missed doing what we love most and can’t wait to see the fans out there again!” said Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Emerging rock band Classless Act, signed to Better Noise Music, is set to open the tour. With the release of their single “Give It To Me” in 2021, the band has already received critical praise from the likes of rock media including SPIN, Loudwire, and more. Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee was an early follower of the band and is excited to have them join him and his bandmates on the road, saying, “I remember when we went out with Ozzy in 1984 and how it was an insane game changer!! We literally blew up after having that opportunity to play live in front of 20,000 people every f***ing night! Since then, we’ve always felt it was important to help new bands; whether it was Guns N Roses, Skid Row or so many others.  This summer we’re gonna help out Classless Act.”

Def Leppard + Journey Announce 2024 Stadium Tour

Def Leppard and Journey will embark on a U.S. stadium tour in 2024 with special guests Steve Miller Band ,  Heart  and Cheap Trick set to appear in select markets.

The 23-date trek kicks off July 6 in St. Louis and is currently set to conclude Sept. 8 in Denver. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, Dec. 15 (more info here ). You can see the complete list of tour dates below.

"Having just completed a sensational 18-month run promoting our Diamond Star Halos album, we shall hit the boards running with a brand-new stage show and set of songs that will celebrate specific parts of our history," Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott said in a press release. "We may even have a surprise or two up our sleeves...so, wanna join us? See you in the summer!”

“We are thrilled to be back on the road in 2024 with so many good friends as part of this tour," Journey shared in their own statement. "No matter which city you come to this will be an amazing night of music!"

Journey and Def Leppard toured together most recently in 2018 , pairing up for a lengthy 60-show run which was one of the most successful packages of the year.

When it wrapped up, Journey and Def Leppard had played in front of over a million fans with ticket sales of more than $97 million. “We’re going to want to put our feet up a little bit, because it’s been a hell of a run," Elliott told UCR in 2018 . "I’m going to want a bit of time with the kids and the wife and the mom and my friends and my record collection and my two cats and my bike.”

The dates with Def Leppard and Journey are Heart's first officially announced concerts for 2024. The band has been inactive since 2019's  Love Alive  outing, which visited nearly 40 cities. But they'll get their feet wet with a trio of shows this month including a New Year's Eve engagement in Seattle. Both  Ann Wilson  and  Nancy Wilson  have remained active in the interim, focusing on solo work and touring with their respective bands.

Earlier this year, Ann  shared  that she and Nancy were working on new music together. She described it as being "closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the '70s, late '70s. So it's really fun, it's just exciting and inspiring." It would be the first new material from Heart since 2016's  Beautiful Broken .

Def Leppard Power Through Storm at Stadium Tour: Set List, Videos

Def Leppard  closed out the first night of the long-awaited Stadium Tour , wrapping an epic bill that included co-headliners Motley Crue and support from Poison  and  Joan Jett .

While most of the day had been hot and muggy – typical summer weather in Atlanta – the skies opened up just as Def Leppard took the stage. They battled rain for much of their performance, though things finally calmed down in the second half of their set.

Def Leppard rocked through many of their biggest hits – including "Love Bites," "Rocket" and "Armageddon It" — while also performing tunes from their recently released album  Diamond Star Halos . The night included a pair of live debuts: "Fire It Up" and "This Guitar." Before the latter track, frontman Joe Elliott honored The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars , the classic David Bowie album that turned 50 today.

The band closed their set with an impressive trio of tunes, performing “Pour Some Sugar on Me" and “Rock of Ages,” before ending with “Photograph.”

You can see Def Leppard's full set list and video from their performance below.

Prior to tonight's show, Def Leppard celebrated the release of Diamond Star Halos with an intimate show at Hollywood's famed Whisky a Go Go. Now they'll get to strut their stuff on the much larger stages to which they have become accustomed over the years. The Stadium Tour will zigzag across North America for the rest of the summer and is scheduled to wrap on Sept. 9 in Las Vegas.

15 Years Ago DEF LEPPARD End X/Ten World Tour In MOSCOW

Def Leppard ended the 2002/2003 X/Ten world tour in Moscow, Russia on this day in 2003.

The show took place at the DS Luzhniki Sports Hall.

Their first ever visit the the city after making their Russian debut in St. Petersburg on the 22nd.

The 'X/Ten' album had been released in July/August 2002 and initially promoted with a sporadic four month promo tour.

The main world tour had begun in Sendai, Japan on 17th November 2002.

The 151 date world tour took the band across Japan, USA/Canada, UK,Ireland, and Europe.

Between 22 and 24 songs were played each night for the first four or five months of the tour.

On the first night in Sendai the band opened the show with the first ever playing of 'Ring Of Fire' which featured some co-lead vocal parts by Rick Savage.

By the second night the band were opening with Side One of the 'High 'n' Dry' which was also a first and the setlist was changed up each night. Over three nights in Tokyo 31 different songs were played.

Only four new songs from the current album were played during the tour - 'Now', 'Four Letter Word', 'You're So Beautiful' and 'Long Long Way To Go'.

Following the Japanese leg the band travelled to the USA for 10 main shows after opening with a radio festival show in San Diego.

A UK/Irish tour followed in February 2003 before a huge late March to early October US/Canadian tour.

For the first time in many year the band would then return to the UK for a second run of 10 shows in October and were joined on stage by Queen's Brian May on the last night at Hammersmith Odeon in London.

A short European tour followed which ended with the band's first ever shows in Russia and the final 151st show in Moscow on 24th November 2003.

Earlier in the day Joe, Vivian and Phil played a short acoustic set on local radio. The first time a Western rock band had ever done so.

Read many of Joe's onstage quotes below including his pre-Rock Of Ages comedy routine with Rick.

Before Foolin'

"Spasiba Moscow! Thank you. Good evening. Welcome to the first ever Def Leppard show in Moscow, and the very last of our world tour. Thanks for having us, thanks for coming. Here's a little thing for ya from the Pyromania album."

Before Four Letter Word

"Thank you. Thank you very much. I'd like to take this opportunity to, for the last time on this tour at least, to introduce you to somebody. He comes all the way from a place called Walthamstow in London. So will you please make a lot of noise, on the electric guitar, Mr. Phil Collen!."

Before Two Steps Behind

"Thank you very much. So Moskva!. Tonight as I mentioned earlier is the last. The very, very last night of our world tour which started exactly one year ago today in Japan. So we've come full circle almost. What we've been doing every night when we've played this particular song, is we've been trying to encourage everybody out there to join the band for like the next four minutes right. You wanna do that?. Yeah!. Oh yeah. You may have noticed my Russian is no good. So you speak, maybe you understand a little English yeah?. Right then you'll understand this. We played two nights ago in St. Petersburg. They were louder than that!. And you lot in the special seats. Let's have a listen. Ahh. Right well if you know the words to the chorus of this song, we'd really appreciate it if you'd join in. Let's see if we can, for one more time, take the f**king roof off this building right?. Right?!. Here's a little thing for ya called Two Steps Behind."

"Thank you very much. Spasiba!. This afternoon we went to visit a radio station and we apparently did something that nobody else has ever had the balls to do. Which was perform live exclusively for the Russian audience acoustically. So we were the first band ever from the West to come here and play acoustic for the Russian audience. Which was a privilege and a pleasure for us. We did this song then and we're gonna do it for you now. This is a track from the latest album. The X album. Here's a little thing for ya called Now."

Before Armageddon It

"Spasiba!. Thank you very much. Well, once again for the last time it's introduction time. So will you please make a lotta lotta of noise for the man from Northern Ireland. Belfast in fact. Mr. Vivian Campbell!."

Before Rock Of Ages

"Thank you. Thank you Moskva!. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Well it's taken us 23 years to get here tonight. I remember when we were just starting out, the BBC in England broadcast a concert from Moskva. Elton John and he was the first. I do believe the first British artist to play in Russia. And ever since we've wondered if we'd ever get the chance to come and finally we are here!. And you know as we know 23 years is a very long time. And it's not 24, almost 25 years, which is how long this chap has been keeping the beat. I am of course talking about Mr. Rick Allen on the drums!. Well night after night, tour after tour, he sits at the back and he never says anything. No speak right. No words. But on this tour we've been encouraging him to introduce a song. And I don't know whether he'll do it again after this because I'm not sure it's been a major success. But he is gonna introduce this next song for ya right. The reason I say it may not have been the greatest success is because he has to keep changing language in every country we go to. And sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's f**king awful. So we will leave it to you to decide. Are you ready?. Are you ready?!. Once again make a lot of noise for the man at the back on the drums Mr. Rick Allen!." - (album intro then played)

After Rock Of Ages

"Moskva, Russia. Thanks for having us. Take care of yourselves, we'll see you next time round. Goodnight!. Spasiba!. Once again thanks for having us. What a great way to end the tour. Thank you very much. We'll see you next time. Goodnight."

Before Let's Get Rocked

"Well Moskva. For once that's not about it. If you can just indulge us for a minute or so. Tonight is the very last night of our tour and what a great place to finish. So if you'll join with us in thanking a great bunch of people who have spent the best part of a year travelling the world with this band. Our fantastic back line crew. Wolfie and Roger and Chad and Curtis. Give them a big round of applause please. Also Malvin our tour manager. Viv our production manager and last and not least our front Ted and Ronan for doing a fantastic job with the sound. Snake for doing an amazing job with the spots considering he's had to do it in about 15 f**king different languages. God bless ya. And I think everybody, band and crew alike will all agree we wanna say a very special thank you to a boy called Kenji. He's Japanese, barely speaks English and has been working with us for the best part of a year doing the lights. He's f**king awesome man. We love him to death. Apologies for anybody I've forgotten. Truckers and people that have been and gone."

"So that's about it then. We've finished. Bye!. Bye!...what?...what?!. OK I've got a question for ya. Do ya wanna get rocked?."

End Of Show

"Oh yeah!. Yeah let's not forget Mark Litten. Tour accountant. And before I get my nuts cut off. Kristine who did wardrobe for nine months. Moskva! Russia. We will try not to leave it so long next time yeah?. And there will be a next time!. Until then. Don't forget us and we won't forget you. Goodnight."

DEF LEPPARD Guitarist PHIL COLLEN - "You Mustn't Mess The Song Up With A Solo"

DEF LEPPARD Guitarist PHIL COLLEN - "You Mustn't Mess The Song Up With A Solo"

To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history.

In the video below, courtesy of Premier Guitar, Collen and Shifty talk through Phil’s formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and Gary Moore, who all played a hand in Collen’s high-flying fretwork.

Collen’s solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren’t many tricks to Collen’s sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the ’80s.

Check out the official lyric video for “Photograph”:

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”
