July Cruises

You’ve never done summer like this before

Celebrate summer with a luxury cruise in July on one of Celebrity’s award-winning ships. There’s an adventure for every taste—a culture-packed voyage around the cool cities of the Baltic, perhaps, or a leisurely journey to some of the most glamorous ports in the Mediterranean. If tropical beaches are calling, then choose the Caribbean for long, relaxing days on Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach, or snorkeling over dazzling coral gardens in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Bermuda’s pink sands and teeming reefs might be just as tempting.

Perhaps you’re intrigued by wildlife, in which case, the pristine forests and rocky coasts of Alaska could be the answer, where you’ll see bears, whales, bald eagles, and sea otters in their glorious natural habitat. Or you could explore the volcanic Galapagos Islands, where you’ll spot fascinating species including giant tortoises, penguins, and prehistoric-looking iguanas.

Itineraries

Top july cruise destinations, scandinavia.

By July, the Scandinavian summer is in full swing. Enjoy leafy pub gardens in chic Copenhagen, wander endless beaches under vast skies in Skagen, on the northerly tip of Denmark, and explore the cobblestone streets of Tallinn, which appear straight out of a fairytale. Visit Stockholm’s fantastic museums, whether you’re into ABBA or maritime history, and admire the work of Norway’s greatest painter at the Munch in Oslo. On cruises from Rotterdam, you’ll have a day in edgy, arty Berlin, too.

Italy, France & Spain

Explore the glamorous Mediterranean in July, where the stylish Celebrity Edge will sail all summer long. Gaze at shimmering contemporary architecture in Valencia, feast on tapas in Palma, and wander through the shaded alleys of Dalt Vila in Ibiza. See the astonishing Leaning Tower of Pisa, and marvel at Florence’s magnificent cathedral. Stroll the waterfront in glamorous Portofino, and from Cannes, head into the mountains to visit medieval villages, all on one unforgettable voyage.

A cruise to Alaska is the best way to see the state’s wild terrains and rugged beauty. Witness whales and other marine life navigating the northern waters. Soar over the most stunning landscapes in North America via helicopter and get a bird’s-eye view of Alaska’s breathtaking glaciers, extraordinary snow-capped mountains, and wild brown bears. Tick an item off your bucket list by visiting the 76-mile-long Hubbard Glacier, the world’s longest tidewater glacier.

If complete relaxation is on your mind, book a Caribbean cruise, where your worries will melt away under the warm sun, tropical beats, and friendly smiles. Wander through old Mayan ruins in Mexico, bask in the sun on Grand Cayman’s famous 7 Mile Beach, and savor authentic Key lime pie in Key West. Or, head to the Eastern Caribbean and visit Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan and its historic fort overlooking the ocean, swim over the coral reefs of St. Thomas, and play with dolphins in the Bahamas.

An all-inclusive vacation to the exotic Galapagos Islands is another class of adventure. On Galapagos cruises in July, you’ll experience some of the most extraordinary and diverse wildlife that the world has to offer. Certified naturalists on board will give you the inside scoop on the islands’ creatures. Snorkel with sea turtles, wander past iguanas, and birdwatch along the dramatic landscapes that only the Galapagos can deliver.

Sail from Cape Liberty to the subtropical island of Bermuda, where flower-filled gardens line country lanes and the rocky coast is fringed with exquisite beaches, some a delicate shade of pink. You’ll spend two nights at the historic Royal Naval Dockyard, with plenty of time to explore massive fortifications, a craft market, and buzzing restaurants. Take a romantic sunset catamaran sail, marvel at the rock formations of the Crystal Caves, and snorkel over vibrant coral reefs.

What’s the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

Let’s get one thing straight right at the start. There is no bad time to cruise . Whether you want to have a summer vacation or a winter getaway, the weather somewhere in the Caribbean is always warm and welcoming.

cruises early july

That said, with our experiences having sailed seemingly every month on the calendar, we have found there are definite advantages and disadvantages to sailing each month of the year. For example, cruises in August offer the ability to sail when the kids are out of school (meaning entire families can travel together). On the other hand, August is also notorious for hurricanes disrupting travel to Caribbean ports.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. No month is perfect. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget.

Taking a Cruise in January

Pros : We like sailing in January as one of the biggest advantages of cruising this time of year is price. During this time of year school is in session and many people are back at work after a holiday break. That means it’s difficult for many to cruise. Cruise lines typically have discounted rates to fill up the ship in January; the same cruise departing at the height of the busy summer can cost hundreds of dollars more than in January.

As well, when winter has gripped most of North America, the Caribbean still offers a warm getaway with lots of sunshine. It’s a welcome change from the snow and cold see in most areas.

Cons : If you are a family, it might be tough for you to take a January cruise. It will usually mean the kids have to skip a few days of school to take the trip. In addition, if you have to fly in for your cruise, there are chances of winter weather causing delays to your schedule. You’ll want to make sure you plan your flight to arrive the day before your cruise, just in case.

As well, this time of year trips from the West Coast will still be cool and Alaskan cruises don’t start sailing until April/May.

Taking a Cruise in February

cruises early july

Pros : February offers the same advantages to sailing as you see in January. Fares are normally discounted, with the ability to save hundreds on a cruise by sailing in February versus the height of the summer season. It’s also cold in most of the United States and Canada, making a warm getaway awfully enticing.

Cons : Like January, you might find it difficult to take time off after the holidays to enjoy a cruise. Doing so means spending vacation days early in the year and/or having the kids miss school. There are also still strong snowstorms in many parts of North America during February, meaning it’s possible that getting to the port can be an adventure if you have to fly in for your cruise from a northern city.

As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully. Don’t plan on spending much time in the water in our experience.

Taking a Cruise in March

Pros : With warmer weather and Spring Break, a cruise is on many people’s minds come March. In fact, if you are a Spring Breaker, this is a great time to sail as a cruise offers an affordable getaway to the beach without having to worry about flights or hotel. Just hop on the ship and start your vacation.

As well, if you’re headed to the Caribbean, March can be warm — but not too warm compared to the heat of the summer months.

Cons : If you aren’t a Spring Break fan, then this might not be the best month to sail. Cruises — especially shorter trips (3-5 days) — will have a younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere. You’ll also see a spike in prices starting in mid-March as cruise lines raise prices for trips that coincide with Spring Break.

Taking a Cruise in April

cruises early july

Pros : April represents one of your last chances to get a deal on a cruise before the busy summer sailing season. Discounts and deals are still available up until about mid-May, giving you the chance to save a bundle on a trip compared to sailing just a month or two later. As well, the threat of snow is diminished in northern parts of the United States and hurricane season isn’t here yet for port cities. It’s hard to find better weather than what you get in April.

Cons : After Spring Break, it’s back to school and work for most people. That means many have a tough time taking a trip at this time a year. That’s unfortunate because April is the “Goldilocks” of cruise months for the Caribbean — it features affordable prices, good weather, and is before hurricane season gets cranked up, which always adds a wildcard to travel in the Caribbean.

Taking a Cruise in May

Pros : Heading into May, cruisers hitting the Caribbean can start to experience some warmer weather both at home and on their cruise. While the water and beach are typically warm enough for swimming and laying out even during the coldest winter months, it is a few degrees warmer in May, which can make it more inviting to hit the beach. For example, Cozumel’s average high in January is 83, compared to 91 degrees in May. If you’re the type who loves warm water, May is when things start to heat up.

Cons : If you wait until too late in the month, you’ll start to see higher prices for your cruise. The end of May marks the start of the summer cruising season, and fares start to jump up. One place where you can save? Cruises to Alaska typically start their season in May, and it’s the cheapest month to sail to that region . We’ve sailed Alaska this time of year and highly recommend it.

Taking a Cruise in June

Pros : If you want a summer getaway with warm weather and water, June is a great choice. Hurricane season starts June 1st, but it’s still rare that you’ll have a chance of a hurricane this early. Meanwhile, the Caribbean is starting to heat up so you can have a true beach summer vacation without worrying about it being too chilly either on the ship or in port. Also, with the kids out of school, you can take them on your trip without worrying about absences.

Cons : With schools out of session and the popular summer vacation season, fares spike for June and through the rest of summer. You’ll usually be paying more for the same cruise compared to taking it earlier in the year. As well, if you aren’t the type that likes to cruise with families on the ship, then keep in mind that summer months typically see an influx of kids.

Taking a Cruise in July

Cruise in July

Pros : Like June, you’ll find warm and sunny days filling July. And with the kids out of classes, you’ll have the opportunity to sail without missing school, making it an ideal time to cruise if you are traveling with kids. While it is warm in the Caribbean, regular afternoon “pop-up” showers can help cool things off during the heat of the afternoon. This also represents the height of the Alaskan cruise season, offering the most options (albeit at higher prices) of the year.

Cons : The biggest negative with sailing in July is hot weather. On sunny days, it can get downright hot in many Caribbean ports. If you aren’t used to the heat and humidity, it can be draining. As well, you should start to look out for hurricanes and tropical storms during July — especially if traveling later in the month. While cruise ships will avoid any storms, they can be unpredictable and cause changes to your itinerary.

Also, just keep in mind that you should expect the highest cruise fares of the year during this time.

Taking a Cruise in August

Pros : Consider August the last hurrah if you want to be able to cruise with the kids out of school. While the weather is hot, being able to travel as a family without missing school days is the biggest draw of sailing in this month. If the kids don’t start back until September, then you can sometimes find deals late in the month that can save you considerably on your cruise fare.

Cons : Similar to July, you can run into weather issues in August. Specifically, the heat and humidity is at its worst in the Caribbean during August. While afternoon showers can cool things off, they are not a guarantee. You also have to start worrying seriously about hurricanes. Late August is reaching the peak of hurricane season. While the chances are low that your specific cruise will be hit by a storm (cruise lines steer clears of storms as much as possible), it could disrupt your trip if a hurricane hits a port of call.

Taking a Cruise in September

Pros : With the busy summer cruise season past, students back to school, and summer vacations in the rear view mirror, September offers a “shoulder” season of sorts. While the Caribbean is still warm — perfect for those that want to hit the beach and the water — cruise fares are heavily discounted versus the expensive summer months. In other words, you get the warm weather of the summer with the lower prices of the fall. As well, your cruise is likely to have fewer kids onboard. It’s also the last chance to sail Alaska for the season, when crowds are fewer and fares are generally cheaper.

Cons : September actually marks the peak of hurricane season. Historically, the first week of the month is the busiest for storms and then activity quickly drops off later in the month. Still, even if your ship isn’t directly impacted by a storm, it can cause issues at Caribbean ports.

Taking a Cruise in October

Cruise in October

Pros : If you’re not wanting to deal with heat, then October is a great time to visit the Caribbean. While the humidity is always a factor, October sees the start of a cooling trend in the weather. As well, while hurricanes can occur in October, the season is largely over so you don’t have to worry about them disrupting your trip as much. Finally, cruise prices also fall during this time of year, meaning you can book a solid deal without spending a bundle.

Cons : It shouldn’t be a surprise that April and October are two months that we consider great times to sail. Like April, the biggest con is that it can be difficult for people with kids to travel without taking their children out of school for a few days. Apart from that, the month sees good weather and cheaper fares, and it’s before the harsh winter hits many places in the U.S. and Canada, disrupting air travel to the port or the weather in the port city.

Taking a Cruise in November

Pros : By the time November rolls around, people are starting to think of warmer weather, especially if you live in a cold area. Taking a trip during this month can lead you away from the cold and gray to the warm and blue. It’s also a great time to find cheap cruises, apart from trips that sail during the Thanksgiving holiday (which are more expensive).

Cons : Scheduling around the Thanksgiving holiday can be tough, and if you have to fly to your cruise during the busiest travel time in the United States, it can mean dealing with long lines and delays at airports. Apart from that, November is a great time to book a cruise with cheap deals and nice weather in the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Taking a Cruise in December

Pros : The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the absolute cheapest times to sail. With many people not looking to travel between these two major holidays, cruise lines slash fares. It’s not unusual to see a trip costing 50% less than a comparable trip during the summer. Needless to say, cruising in December is also a big draw for people wanting to get away from the snow and cold of many places in the north.

Cons : Trying to fit a cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be tough for many schedules. And while many people take a cruise during Christmas itself, those trips are more expensive. If you are traveling by air, be ready for the possibility of delays due to weather and holiday travel crowds.

What Are the Least Expensive Months to Sail?

If you want to sail for cheap, then we suggest looking at months like January, February, April, May, September and October . We find that rates during these months tend to be less expensive than for the same cruise if headed to the Caribbean. During these times fewer people are traveling, leading to generally lower cruise fare.

If headed to Alaska, then the months are more limited. The season runs largely from May through September. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices.

So Which Month Is Best to Cruise?

As mentioned above, there is no “bad” time to sail. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port . The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail.

If you are within driving distance of a port, then you can expand these months to include early winter months and later fall months. During these times the weather on a cruise will be warmer than back home, prices are very affordable, and if driving, you can get to the port without worrying about airline delays.

Cruise Tips for Alaska Weather: Month by Month

Cruise Tips for Weather in Alaska: Month by Month

If you’re thinking about planning a summer cruise , Alaska may be the perfect destination for you. The Alaskan cruise season lasts from May to October, and the warmest months for travel are typically June, July, and August. Alaskan cruises may seem suited only for people who like extreme weather, but the truth is that the weather in Alaska varies widely based on the region.

Here’s what you can expect each month on your upcoming Alaska cruise along with what you really need to pack.

Ready to start planning? Explore all Alaska cruises .

Alaska Cruise Weather in May

May brings warmer weather within the cities and towns of the Alaskan inside passage. While it can be freezing cold at times, the weather can also be pleasantly cool. The low temperatures typically range from the mid-thirties to the low forties Fahrenheit, but the highs can get up to the upper fifties.

This month also experiences near constant cloud cover with a good chance of rain on any given day. Travelers get at least fifteen hours of daylight and twilight in May, providing more time for whale watching and other outdoor activities. With low wind speeds, cold temperatures, and precipitation, travelers may want to pack plenty of knit sweaters, a jacket, warm pants, and waterproof boots or shoes.

Alaska Cruise Weather in June

Most of the month of June in Alaska is either cold or pleasantly cool with very cold temperatures being less frequent than in May. The lows can be as low as forty-three degrees Fahrenheit, and the highs can get up to the sixties on average.

Cloud cover and precipitation conditions from May persist throughout June and July, and wind speeds remain low as well. Layers are essential for this type of fluctuating weather, and travelers should be sure to pack waterproof jackets and shoes for rainy moments, cardigans or light sweaters, and other warm clothes like jeans, long skirts, and tights.

Alaska Cruise Weather in July

July is known as the hottest month in this section of Alaska with the hottest day of the year falling on July 9th. Temperatures range on average between fifty and sixty degrees with mostly cool afternoons and evenings and chilly mornings and mid-day hours.

The late nights and early mornings can be very cold, but these are also the hours when most people are asleep in their cabins. Travelers cruising to Alaska in July should be sure to pack plenty of layers along with some waterproof outerwear, but they should pack light, removable layers to adjust to the warmer temperatures of the afternoons.

Alaska Cruise Weather in August

August brings a gradual decrease in temperatures again, but it is still one of the hottest months of the year in this region. Temperatures during this month usually range from the mid-forties to the low sixties, and days are typically cool or chilly.

Like July, nights and early mornings can be very cold, so late nighters and early risers should be prepared to bundle up for icy temperatures. Plenty of layers are also essential in August, and travelers should be sure to pack waterproof jackets, shoes, and bags as August and September are among the rainiest months of the year.

Alaska Cruise Weather in September

September is one of the last months of the cruise season in Alaska and it is also one of the coldest, with temperatures staying in the low to high forties on average. As the month advances, the temperatures drop lower and lower, and the nights and early mornings can be bitterly cold.

The abundant cloud cover and frequent rain make the landscape all the more beautiful, but visitors should dress properly for a better overall experience. Travelers still get at least twelve hours of sunlight for excursions and deck activities, but they should pack thick pants, knit sweaters, and insulated shoes to combat the cold along with waterproof rain gear.

Alaska Cruise Weather in October

October in Alaska can see lows can be as low as 28° Fahrenheit, and the highs can reach up to 40° Fahrenheit. You can also expect more precipitation, which can result in some snowy weather.

Both September and October are ideal times to see the stunning Northern Lights, otherwise known as aurora borealis displays. The best times to look is between Midnight and 2am.

While Alaska might be colder than other summer vacation spots, it offers unique experiences that can’t be found anywhere else. These include sightings of wild orcas , sea lions, and humpback whales and riding one of the world’s longest ziplines.

You’ll also have a chance to visit the incredible Butchart Gardens, witness glaciers, pan for gold , hike through temperate rainforests, and much more. If you’re prepared for the weather and pack the right attire for your destination, nothing can get in the way of having a good time.

Alaska Cruise Weather: May-July Overview

Alaska is known for its unpredictable and often erratic weather, so many travelers hesitate over which month to book their sailing.

While winter months carry a certain magical allure, most opt for spring or summer trips due to vibrant landscapes, extended daylight hours, and milder temperatures.

Island Princess in Alaska

It’s also during this period that travelers can indulge in fishing and wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Check out our guide to Alaska cruise weather for May, June, and July. In addition to monthly stats, discover the other seasonal variations that can help you pick the perfect time to cruise.

Alaska Cruise Weather: May

In May, Alaska cruise temperatures average between 40 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

May tends to be slightly rainier than June and July, with a slight chance of snow earlier in the month.

Ketchikan, a popular stop for cruise ships, is one of the rainiest places in North America. It averages about 9.5 inches of rain in May. So if you’re cruise includes a visit to Ketchikan, it wouldn’t hurt to pack your rain gear.

Ketchikan averages 16 hours of daylight in May; you’ll get even longer days as you travel north to Anchorage and still more if you take a cruise tour up to Fairbanks.

ketchikan alaska creek street

However, daylight hours in May are a few hours shorter than what you’ll experience if you travel around the spring equinox in late June.

Expect to see plenty of snow-capped peaks in May. If you travel up into the hills or mountains on a shore excursion, it’s common to find snow still on the ground. As such, you’ll want to pack waterproof hiking boots and warm, waterproof layers (don’t forget gloves and hats) to handle any wet or chilly spring weather.

Mosquitos aren’t a problem in May. They’re in the summer, so you don’t have to worry about pesky insects while enjoying your vacation.

If you’re planning a cruise tour to Denali National Park and Preserve, it’s worth noting that the bus service doesn’t begin until late May. The road through the park is only partially open until early June.

alaska denali moose holland america

For nature lovers, you’ll be glad to know that May marks the beginning of the salmon-fishing, whale-watching, and wildlife-viewing seasons.

Although you can spot whales and go fishing any time during the Alaska cruise season, late May and early June are considered the best for seeing mammals because this is when moms and babies search for food.

If budget is as big a concern as Alaska cruise weather, May is one of the cheapest months to sail due to shoulder-season discounts.

Alaska Cruise Weather: June

If you’re planning an Alaska cruise in June, temperatures average a low of 45 and a high of 62.

June is tied with July as the least rainy month, with Ketchikan receiving an average rainfall of less than 7.5 inches.

Alaska cruise weather in late June is some of the best, with 18 hours of daylight and plenty of sun. If you’re lucky, it might even get warm!

With drier ground in June than in May, Alaska cruisers can start to hike in earnest.

Whether on your own or with a guide, be sure to pack appropriate gear, such as backpacks with bear bells, water bottles, snacks, and—most importantly—bug spray. The mosquitos start being a nuisance in June.

For other shore excursions, layering is your best bet. You might need a fleece jacket in the morning but find yourself stripping down to a T-shirt by early afternoon. A packable rain jacket is always good to have on hand since you never know when you’ll get caught in a summer squall.

alaska cruise holland america line

The warmer Alaska weather makes June (and July) the best times to see calving glaciers during scenic cruise days.

June is also one of the best months for whale-watching; late June and early July are the best times for bear-spotting excursions.

Because of the fine Alaska weather in late June, it’s an excellent time to plan a cruise tour to Denali. The roads are open, days long and dry, and there’s an increased chance of seeing active wildlife.

Cruise fares in June will be higher than in May but better than in the prime summer months.

Alaska Cruise Weather: July

July offers the best Alaska cruise summer weather. It has the least rain (less than 7.5 inches in Ketchikan), long days (17 to 18 hours of daylight), and a warm climate. Temperatures average a low of 48 and a high of 65.

Pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, and your bathing suit for a top-deck dip after your shore tour. Despite the positive forecast, you’ll still want to pack light layers and rain gear that you can don for glacier viewing or visits, forested hikes, or the always-possible rain shower.

Fishing enthusiasts will do their best cruising in July since most types of salmon are running during this month. As with June, it’s an ideal month for wildlife viewing, whether you seek out bears, moose, or Humpback whales.

Exterior view of Zaandam docked in Juneau, Alaska

The glaciers along your route will be cracking like mad, so make sure your July cruise swings by Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay, or other scenic cruising destinations.

You’ll have the full range of cruise tour destinations open to you if you travel in July. But be warned: Cruise fares average the highest this month because the Alaska cruise weather in July is so nice, and more families are traveling because school is out for the summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to cruise alaska .

The answer entirely depends on your travel goals.  In general, the best time to cruise Alaska is from July to September due to milder weather and longer daylight hours. During these months, tour destinations and attractions are open and fully operational, so you can enjoy the full Alaskan experience.

However, May and June also come with their own perks. For one, they’re excellent months for wildlife viewing. The landscape becomes alive with hundreds of migratory birds, and you’ll have a good chance to spot bears, whales, and other wildlife.

Furthermore, May and June bring competitive pricing for cruises compared to the peak season in July. This can be advantageous for budget-conscious travelers.

What is the best time of year to see the northern lights in Alaska cruise?

Northern lights in Alaska usually appear during the aurora seasons, which typically fall in April, August, and September. It’s less likely to occur between May and July due to the extended daylight hours and the midnight sun

Can I still see glaciers during an Alaska cruise from May to July?

Yes! In fact, most glacier excursions are best done in summer and early fall months, which coincidentally falls between May and July and extends till September. Glacial activities, such as calving, are more pronounced during these periods due to warmer temperatures.

On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

The Ultimate Alaska Cruise Packing List for 2024

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Alaskan cruises are a unique blend of breathtaking glacial landscapes, thrilling outdoor activities, and diverse wildlife sightings. But, the state’s weather can be rather unpredictable – from sunny and warm afternoons to frigid evenings, we’ve got you covered with this ultimate Alaska cruise packing list!

The secret to packing right for an Alaskan cruise is layering. Stick with us as we delve into the specifics to ensure you’re prepared for this exciting Alaskan experience.

From the proper attire and essential gadgets to the smaller items you might not have thought of, we’ll guide you through packing for every situation you might encounter on your journey through the Last Frontier.

Best Alaska Cruise Packing List 2024

We’ve broken down this list into a few sections including the essentials (for everyone in your group), some specifics for both men and women, as well as a few key items you may want to remember to bring along for the young ones in your group!

The lists I’ve included have been created for a 10-day trip around Alaska (the most common Alaska cruise duration), so depending on the length of your specific trip, you may need to bring more or fewer items.

You can also do a quick search before departing to see if your ship has laundry services available, which may also allow you to bring less clothing than what I’ve mentioned below.

Let’s start with the essentials!

The Essentials:

Rain Jacket Having a rain jacket at your disposal is vital when embarking on an Alaskan cruise. Alaska’s weather is notorious for its unpredictability, and sudden rain showers are not uncommon, even during the summer months. A good, waterproof rain jacket will keep you dry during those unexpected downpours, allowing you to continue your exploration comfortably. Furthermore, most rain jackets are lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry around during your on-shore excursions. Opt for a versatile style that is large enough to be layered over warm clothing during colder weather, ensuring that you’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

Rain Pants Layering is key when packing for an Alaskan cruise, and a pair of rain pants should never be overlooked. Waterproof rain pants will come in handy during hikes with low, wet brush, or if you’re keen on staying out on the deck for photos during some bigger swells. By pairing them with a thermal inner layer, your lower half will stay warm and dry.

Warm Hat To protect your head from cold and wet weather, pack a warm hat that will keep you comfortable in any condition. Choose one with a good fit to ensure you won’t have to worry about it slipping off when you’re out exploring the ship on windy days. Opt for something lightweight but still warm, such as a wool or fleece beanie . Though it may not seem like an essential item at first glance (especially if you’ll be cruising in the summer months), you’ll be thankful to have one when the chilly evenings set in.

Gloves Gloves are another must-have item for your Alaska cruise packing list. Choose a pair that is water resistant to keep your hands comfortable whether you’re heading to dinner or are opting for a fishing tour in Ketchikan . Additionally, consider packing touch-screen compatible gloves so that you can take phone photos without sacrificing chilly fingers!

Tall, Moisture-wicking Socks Moisture-wicking socks are essential for keeping your feet dry and comfortable. Select a pair that is tall enough to cover the ankle and made of breathable fabric. Wool or synthetic fibers are great choices as they will provide warmth while also wicking away sweat and moisture, ensuring you stay comfortable no matter what activity you’re taking part in.

Waterproof Hiking Boots or Shoes When creating your packing list for an Alaskan cruise, don’t forget to include a pair of waterproof hiking boots or shoes for any on-shore adventures. Opt for sturdy soles that will provide traction and stability during hikes or other outdoor activities. Additionally, look for models with waterproof fabric and insulation to keep your feet dry in wet conditions, as well as extra cushioning to ensure you won’t end up with sore feet at the end of the day. The decks onboard a cruise can also get quite slippery thanks to rain and sea mist, so they’ll also prove to be useful while roaming the ship.

Formal Wear Though Alaskan cruises are known for their casual atmosphere, it’s always a good idea to have formal wear when packing. Since most cruise lines will provide at least one black-tie dinner or evening event during the trip, having at least one option is always a good idea. Opt for timeless classics such as black trousers and a collared shirt or a simple solid color dress. In my opinion, don’t worry too much about packing those heels… your feet will be under the table anyway! A pair of flats or boat shoes will do just fine.

Bathing Suit A bathing suit is essential for any cruise, regardless of destination. Whether you’re looking to lounge on the deck or take a dip in the pool or hot tub onboard, you’ll want to be prepared and make sure it’s on your packing list for Alaska. It’s also good to have if you plan on doing any water activities such as fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding so you don’t get your everyday wear wet.

Day Bag A sturdy day bag will be essential when you’re out exploring ashore. At the very least, bring a reliable backpack that is large enough to fit your water bottle, wallet, some snacks, sunscreen, and extra layers. Look for one with multiple compartments or pockets so you can easily store all of those small items you’ll need during your excursions. One with a water-resistant rain cover is also a good option in case you find yourself caught in some unexpected rain.

Dry Bag A dry bag is a must-have item if you plan on spending lots of time out on the water. This simple yet essential piece of gear will keep your phone, camera, or other valuables safe from water damage during kayaking, fishing, or any other kind of water activity. You can also use it to store clothes, towels, and other items that you want to keep dry while onboard. Ones that float are an extra perk!

Portable Charger No matter where your Alaskan cruise takes you, a portable charger will prove to be invaluable. Select one with two USB ports so you can charge multiple devices at once, and look for one with a large capacity that won’t run out of juice too quickly. I have one from Amazon and it’s lasted me over 5 years!

Reusable Water Bottle Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring the great outdoors, so including a reusable water bottle on your Alaska cruise packing list is a must. Not only will it keep you from having to spend money on water whenever you get off the ship, but it also helps reduce waste onboard. Opt for one that’s made with high-quality material such as stainless steel or BPA-free plastic, and make sure it’s large enough to hold plenty of water. Don’t forget to pack a carabiner so you can easily clip your bottle onto your bag!

Sunglasses No matter what time of year you’re cruising in Alaska, sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from the bright sunshine reflecting off the sea or ice. Look for a pair with polarized lenses that will reduce glare and block out UV rays, as well as frames that are comfortable and won’t slip off your head too easily.

Hair Products While Alaska is stocked full of plenty of shops in the ports all selling hair supplies including shampoos, conditioners, oils, etc., it’s best to bring your own from home. The shops near the cruise terminals charge exorbitant prices for these basic necessities, so you can save yourself a lot of money by packing your own.

Oral Hygiene Products When packing for your Alaskan cruise, it’s important to include some essential oral hygiene products. Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste (or powder), floss, and mouthwash that will keep you feeling fresh throughout the voyage.

Deodorant Deodorant is a must-pack item when going on an Alaskan cruise. Look for a long-lasting, waterproof deodorant that won’t give up during your adventures and will keep you smelling pleasant no matter how warm it gets outside. I wouldn’t recommend trying anything new on the cruise, however, just in case it causes skin irritation. If you have a brand that you know and love, stick with that!

Cologne or Perfume Whether you’re getting dressed up for dinner or want to smell nice during the day, having a signature scent can go a long way in making you feel good. Opt for a travel-size version that’s preferably made of plastic instead of glass so it won’t take up too much space in your suitcase and is unlikely to break.

First Aid Products Cruise ships are exceedingly well stocked with medical supplies, but if you’re planning on leaving the ship to explore during your vacation, then it’s important to have some basic first aid items such as antiseptic wipes and bandages on hand. Additionally, bring any over-the-counter medications that you may need such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or motion sickness pills if you’re prone to seasickness. Don’t forget to bring any prescription medications, as well.

Snacks No matter where you’re traveling, snacks are always a good idea. Packing your own is not only cheaper than buying from the onboard gift shop or convenience stores in port, but it’s also typically healthier and faster when you find yourself onshore and several hours out from your next meal.

Important Travel Documents (& Copies!) When putting together your Alaska cruise packing list, it’s important to bring all of the necessary documents with you. This includes a valid passport or proof of citizenship, any visas you may need, as well as your ship ticket and a valid driver’s license or other forms of ID. You should also make copies of these documents to have in your luggage and to leave at home in case they are lost or stolen.

These packing lists for both men and women have been designed for a 10-day cruise without the use of laundry services while onboard. Depending on the length of your trip and whether or not you’ll be budgeting time to do laundry, you may need more or less clothing than what I’ve listed below.

FAQ: Alaska Cruise Packing List

In this next section, I’ll be answering some essential questions for your cruise around Alaska so you have everything you need before departing.

What Should I Pack for a 7-day Cruise to Alaska?

For a 7-day cruise to Alaska, you should prioritize packing layers to adjust to the varying temperatures. Start with thermal underwear and socks, followed by a base layer of moisture-wicking t-shirts and long-sleeve shirts. Include one or two fleece jackets or wool sweaters for added warmth.

Don’t forget a waterproof outer layer, like a rain jacket or windbreaker, to protect against precipitation. Pack two pairs of durable pants, preferably one thermal and one water-resistant. In terms of footwear, waterproof boots are crucial. Don’t forget essentials such as gloves, a warm hat, and sunglasses. Alaska can have its hot days too in the summer, so be sure to leave room for a swimsuit, some shorts, and a couple of lighter outfits.

For formal dining nights, pack a semi-formal outfit. Lastly, carry all necessary toiletries, medications, and personal items in your carry-on.

How Do You Not Overpack for an Alaskan Cruise?

Avoiding overpacking for a cruise can be achieved through careful planning and prioritization. Start by checking the weather forecast for your destinations and the duration of your trip as your departure date approaches to help you determine the type and amount of clothing you need. Focus on multipurpose items that can be worn in multiple outfits and layering pieces for different weather conditions.

Invest in travel-size toiletries and consider sharing items like shampoo or toothpaste if you’re traveling with others. Instead of packing bulky items like towels or blankets, confirm beforehand if these will be provided on the ship. For clothing, opt for materials that are lightweight, quick-drying, and wrinkle-resistant to save space and reduce the need for laundry services.

Remember to leave some room in your suitcase for some authentic Alaskan souvenirs you might purchase during your trip. Lastly, once you’ve packed everything, review your items and ask yourself if you really need each item.

If you’re on the fence about bringing something, ask yourself “can I buy this in my destination if I absolutely need it?” and if the answer is yes, then don’t bring it. This will help you determine what’s essential and what can be left behind.

What Do I Need for a Shore Excursion on an Alaska Cruise?

For a shore excursion on an Alaskan cruise, you’ll need a variety of items to ensure that you’re prepared for any weather or activity. Start with comfortable, sturdy footwear suitable for walking, hiking, or any other activities you might participate in. Having some extra layers on hand for warmth and protection from precipitation will also prove to be invaluable resources.

In terms of non-clothing items, consider packing binoculars for wildlife viewing, a camera to capture the beautiful Alaskan scenery, and any medications you may need. Always carry a copy of your ID and ship information in case of emergencies. Remember that all of this including some snacks, your water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc. can all fit inside that one day bag I mentioned above.

Each excursion may have specific requirements or suggestions on what to bring, so it’s always a good idea to check the details of the activity and confirm with the tour operator beforehand.

Do I Need to Pack for Formal Nights on a Cruise to Alaska?

Yes, formal nights on Alaskan cruises are a tradition and a wonderful opportunity to dress up for an elegant dining experience.

While the dress code varies by cruise line, generally, men are recommended to bring dress pants with a collared shirt and tie, and women are encouraged to pack a cocktail dress, elegant pantsuit, or formal skirt and blouse.

However, if you prefer to keep things casual, many cruises offer alternatives to formal dining where the dress code is more relaxed. It’s always a good idea to check with your specific cruise line for their dress code guidelines.

How Much Spending Money Should You Take on an Alaskan Cruise?

The amount of money you’ll need to take on your cruise depends on several factors including the package you chose, your dining plans, shopping habits, and whether you intend to participate in any shore excursions.

However, as a general guideline, it’s recommended to budget around $50 – $100 per person per day. This will cover any additional dining, drinks, gratuities, and incidental expenses onboard, as well as some shopping and activities at the various ports of call.

Keep in mind that every port will have ATMs available and many cruise lines also have ATMs onboard, so you don’t need to step on deck with tons of cash. This isn’t a safe idea anyway, so just have enough to get you through the first day or two after you have a chance to see how much spending you and your group are doing on average.

Is it Cold on a Cruise to Alaska?

The weather on an Alaskan cruise can vary greatly depending on the time of year and the specific regions visited. Generally, summers (June to August) in Alaska are mild with temperatures ranging from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can drop lower, especially in the evenings.

During these months, Alaska can get cold particularly when you’re out on the deck of the ship. You’ll also experience cooler temperatures as you cruise through the stunning Kenai Fjords when you’ll be surrounded by icy glaciers.

This is why layering clothes is highly recommended to adapt to fluctuating temperatures. Always have a warm jacket or sweater and a rainproof layer handy.

Which Cruise Lines Sail to Alaska?

A variety of cruise lines sail to Alaska, each offering unique experiences and itineraries. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Princess Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean International
  • Celebrity Cruises

To make sure your priorities and preferences are met, it is essential to compare these cruise lines and what they offer. Each is unique in its packages, ports, and ambiance, so do your research so you can select the one that best suits your needs.

When is the Alaska Cruise Season?

The Alaska cruise season typically runs from late April to early October, with the peak season being June, July, and August. These months provide the warmest weather, longest days, and the best chance of spotting wildlife such as bears, whales (among a variety of majestic sea life), and eagles.

However, the shoulder months of May and September can offer discounted rates and less crowded ports. So, depending on your travel style, you may want to consider traveling during the less popular months if you’re looking for more of a budget-friendly or “off-the-beaten-path” experience.

Final Thoughts on Alaska Cruise Packing

An Alaskan cruise is a unique experience, and packing for it requires a bit more planning and consideration than a typical vacation. Remember to pack clothing that you can layer to adapt to varying temperatures, and don’t forget sturdy footwear for your shore excursions.

Consider formal wear for elegant dining nights, and budget your spending money wisely for any additional onboard expenses and port activities. Most importantly, strive for minimalism— pack only what you need and what cannot be purchased at your destination. Your Alaska cruise packing list is long enough, and you need to leave room for some fun souvenirs!

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

cruises early july

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.

Temperatures in July average from the high 40s to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

September also sees fewer crowds than in the summer. However, the shoulder season has become more prevalent in recent years, making great deals harder to find. Knowing when to book your cruise can help you save money on your trip.

Due to the shorter daylight hours, September provides the best opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis from an Alaskan cruise.

What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise (outfit ideas with photos)

What to wear on an Alaska Cruise

Sharing is caring!

Even if you’ve been on a cruise before, planning and packing for an Alaska cruise is quite different. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering what to wear on an Alaska cruise.

I did a lot of research before my first Alaska cruise and wanted to make sure that I was prepared for the Alaska weather, the excursions and for days and evenings on the cruise ship. I can confirm that packing raingear and wearing layers is good advice! However, there’s a lot more to know.

Alaska temperatures range from the mid 40’s to the mid 70’s, depending on the month or your cruise. Plus, Alaska weather is unpredictable. It’s possible to have mild and sunny days, as well as rainy and cooler days during a 7 day Alaska cruise.

In this post I share what I wore during the day on Alaska excursions, as well as cruise outfits for casual and formal nights. You’ll find several photos as well as recommendations for clothing, accessories and other useful Alaska cruise essentials.

I’ve also shared an Alaska packing list of items you don’t want to forget!

What to Wear on an Alaskan Cruise – Day and Evening

Alaska-cruise-outfit-daytime

What to Expect on an Alaska Cruise

Alaska cruises are more casual than Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises , both during the day and in the evening. Even though we cruised with Holland America, which is a more traditional cruise line, we still found this to be true.

Our Alaska cruise was in May, which is one of the cooler and drier months to cruise in Alaska. If you’re going to Alaska in the summer, there are some things I brought that you can likely leave at home.

I’ve included examples of Alaska cruise outfits for daytime, evening and formal nights.

Pro tip: Check the weather forecast for your ports of call starting about a week before your cruise to help you plan your outfits.

What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise During the Day

alaska-cruise-outfits

If you’ve been looking at Alaska cruise packing lists, you know that you should plan on layering your clothing. This is because the mornings in cruise ports like Juneau , Ketchikan and Skagway can be quite cool and warm up quite a bit in the mid to late afternoon.

alaska-cruise-outfits

You’ll want to pack short sleeve and long sleeve t-shirts, to wear under a fleece sweatshirt or hoodie. During my cruise, the temperature during the day was usually about 50F to 57F, so I almost always wore a lightweight puffer jacket as well.

When it got warm, we just removed our jackets, folded them up and put them in our water resistant backpack.

Sweatshirts, Jeans & Leggings

cruises early july

There’s no need to be fancy during the day on your Alaska cruise. I live in leggings when I’m at home, and this was great for days in Alaska too. I also wore blue jeans, which I found kept my legs warm even during a canoe excursion on Harriet Hunk Lake in Ketchikan.

I was really happy I brought these fleece sweatshirts . They were so comfortable and they kept me warm and cozy, even during our day in Glacier Bay!

cruises early july

Recommended: Amazon Essentials fleece sweatshirts (I bought these in blue & pink)

Hats & Gloves

alaska-cruise-outfits

I wondered if I’d wear my hat and gloves, and I sure did! Hats and gloves don’t take up a lot room to pack, and they’re worth bringing even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the summer or fall. Mornings and late nights can be frosty, especially on glacier viewing days.

I recommend bringing thin touch screen gloves, so that you can use your smart phone to take photos or look at emails, without freezing your hands.

Recommended: Touch free gloves (love these!)

Puffer Jacket

cruises early july

Although I live in Canada and am used to winter weather, I hate being cold. I wasn’t sure if I needed a parka or a lighter lined jacket. I’m glad I decided on a lightweight puffer jacket.

This water resistant puffer jacket kept me warm, without feeling overheated, during my days in port. I could also unzip my jacket when I was in the bus on tours and excursions.

A puffer vest is also a popular choice for outer wear on an Alaska cruise.

Pro tip: Wear your puffer jacket on your flight or pack it in your carry-on bag, to save room in your checked luggage.

Alaska-cruise-outfits

If you’re going on an Alaska cruise, you need to pack some rain gear. Alaska is home to the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world. While you won’t always have heavy rain, Alaska can be drizzly or misty on any given day. In fact, Juneau experiences some form of precipitation approximately 230 days a year.

We were very lucky during our Inside Passage cruise as it only rained two days out of 7! We had some rain on our embarkation day in Vancouver and in the afternoon while we walked around Ketchikan’s Creek Street and the cruise port.

What to Pack for Rain in Alaska

Wind-proof Travel Umbrella

alaska-cruise-outfits-rainy-day

An umbrella is optional for an Alaska cruise. We rarely used it, but did find it handy while we explored Vancouver in the rain during our pre-cruise stay.

If you take photos and videos, an umbrella can be useful as well. Some cruise lines may provide an umbrella for use in your stateroom.

Rain Jacket

Depending on the time of the year, a rain jacket is a clothing item to pack for your Alaska cruise. If I was cruising to Alaska in June, July or August, I would have brought mine and layered it on top of a long or short sleeve shirt.

Since we were there in May, it made more sense to bring a warmer water repellant jacket.

Waterproof Shoes or Hiking Boots

Alaska is all about exploring the great outdoors. Waterproof hiking shoes will keep your feet dry and comfortable as you explore rugged terrains, trek through glaciers, and walk through trails in Alaska.

While you can wear sneakers, waterproof hiking shoes are better for wet and muddy weather that you might experience on some Alaska excursions . Good hiking shoes will also give you traction and support for uneven terrain.

Thermal Wear

alaska-cruise-outfits

Thermal underwear (or Long John’s) will keep you warm during rainy and cool days in Alaska. We brought some as our philosophy was, we are going to visit Alaska, even if it’s cold and rainy!

cruises early july

Recommended: Thermal wear

Lucky for us, the weather was pretty good. However, it only about 50-55F most days and my husband and son found thermal underwear to be useful when worn under a pair of jeans.

I brought fleece lined leggings , and this was perfect for me.

What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise for the Evening

Alaska-cruise-outfit-evening

Planning your cruise vacation outfits for an Alaska cruise can be a bit of a challenge. While most cruise lines have dress code suggestions, in practice many cruise passengers dress more casually for the evening on Alaska cruises that on other itineraries.

If you’re on a 7 day cruise, you can expect to have mostly casual and smart casual evenings, with one or two dressy or formal evenings .

alaska-ladies-evening-cruise-clothing

If you want don’t even want to think about what to wear, you can also eat in the cruise ship buffet or grab some pizza or a burger at a one of the casual restaurants.

What Shoes to Pack for an Alaska Cruise

There’s no need to pack too many shoes for an Alaska cruise . The shoes you’ll want to pack are:

  • Sneakers, walking or running shoes
  • Dress shoes (for evening)
  • Casual shoes (for evening)
  • Flip flops or slides (for the pool & hot tubs)
  • Waterproof hiking shoes (optional)

Alaska Cruise Accessories

Here are a few “must-have” items and cruise essentials to pack for an Alaska cruise.

Travel Binoculars

Large Backpack

A good size water resistant back pack is great to bring on shore excursions. I like this one as it has a waterproof bag insert, good for potential Alaska downpours.

Recommended: 40 L Backpack (love this one on Amazon)

Waist Pouch or Cross Body Bag

alaska-cruise-outfits

One of the best things I brought on my Alaska cruise was a cross body style waist pouch. It was great to not bring a purse with me, so I could be hands free on my excursions.

These days, fanny packs or belt bags are in style for both women and men.

Alaska Cruise Packing: Frequently Asked Questions

alaska-cruise-we-love-alaska

Should You Pack Shorts for an Alaska Cruise?

Since Alaska weather can be unpredictable, it’s a good idea to pack at least one pair shorts for warmer days or to work out in the gym. If you’re taking an Alaska cruise during the summer, you may get weather into the 70’s and you’ll be happy you brought shorts and a t-shirt.

Is it Cold on an Alaska Cruise Ship?

I was surprised to find out that it wasn’t cold on the cruise ship in Alaska. In fact, the dining room was very comfortable and I never needed a sweater or shawl. The one day when it was cold on the cruise ship was our glacier viewing day in Glacier Bay. This was because the doors to the outdoor promenade and the ship’s bow were kept open for much of the time, allowing cool weather in.

Do You Need a Coat for an Alaskan Cruise?

If you get cold easily, you’ll probably want to pack a puffer jacket or lightweight coat for an Alaskan cruise. This is especially true if you’re cruising during the beginning, end or shoulder season.

A light jacket or puffer style vest worn over a fleece sweatshirt should be good for those cruising to Alaska during the late spring and summer months.

Should I Pack a Bathing Suit for an Alaskan Cruise?

alaska-cruise-pool

You should pack at least one bathing suit and cover up for your Alaska cruise. Many cruise ships sailing in Alaska have a heated indoor pool. However, even if your cruise ship doesn’t have a covered pool area, you can still use the outdoor pool and hot tubs.

I was surprised to see a few people swimming in the outdoor pool on cool sea days during our cruise to Alaska. The hot tubs were used regularly, and were particularly appealing during our day in Glacier Bay (what a view!).

Final Thoughts on What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise

Packing for an Alaska cruise and knowing what to wear can be a challenge. However, since Alaska cruises are more casual than other cruise itineraries, planning your Alaska cruise outfits isn’t as hard as it seems.

For day, plan your outfits based on comfort. This means stay warm and dry, and wear layers to help do this. For evenings, you can pack lighter for your Alaska cruise by wearing pants or jeans, paired with different tops. Even formal nights on Alaskan cruises are less fancy than most cruises. Of course, dress how you enjoy, but don’t feel obligated to wear a formal evening dress and tuxedo.

Travel | Alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season

cruises early july

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line  has nearly 100 more after that.

Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises , which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pit stop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau. “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city.”

Sometimes just seeing a whale's tail is a win when on an Alaskan tour. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port will have 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said.

Walking on a glacier is one of the more exciting shore excursions Alaska has to offer. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises ’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Skagway, a popular cruise port, is the northernmost point in Alaska's Inside Passage. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver, and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises  ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which incorporates an unprecedented 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

While in Skagway, let happy and hard-working sled dogs take you on a spin around Musher's Camp. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The nearly four-weeklong itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn  strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Red Onion Saloon, a former bordello built in 1898, is a top attraction in historic Skagway. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Disney Cruise Line  is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.

See Four Seasons' upcoming ultra-luxury cruise with a $350,000-a-week suite bigger than most homes

  • Four Seasons says it will begin sailing an  ultra-luxury yacht cruise in January 2026.
  • The 222-guest vessel would have 95 spacious suites and 11 dining options — but food wouldn't be free.
  • The largest suite would have four floors and bedrooms, a spa, and a price of $350,000 per sailing.

Insider Today

Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

The company says the 95-suite vessel will debut in January 2026 and cost a minimum of $20,000 per weeklong sailing.

For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry.

The ultra-plush 14-deck Four Seasons I is scheduled for 19 voyages in 2026 to more than 130 Caribbean and Mediterranean ports.

cruises early july

Reservations opened two weeks ago. Those interested can register to join a waitlist or book through a travel agent.

So far, "sales have been very encouraging, and the demand is exciting to see," Thatcher Brown, chief commercial officer and head of joint operations for Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, told Business Insider in a statement. The company is a joint owner and operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Renderings make the Four Seasons I look as opulent as the brand's land-based properties.

cruises early july

Four Seasons says its vessel will have 95 suites ranging from 537 to 9,975 square feet, some with three bedrooms.

The smallest suite starts at $19,700 for a five-night roundtrip voyage to Athens, Greece.

No windowless interior cabins here: Like other ultra-luxe cruises, the suites would all have terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows.

cruises early july

Customers could expect upscale amenities like a walk-in closet, down-filled duvets and pillows, and marble dual vanity bathrooms, per Four Seasons.

The most premium suites would also feature additional accommodations for "personal assistants," such as au pairs or security personnel.

Some options, like the 7,952-square-foot Loft Suite, could be adjoined with seven other cabins to accommodate up to 20 people.

cruises early july

Without connecting cabins, the Loft Suite would already have three bedrooms and bathrooms, a powder room, and a sauna.

Others, like the largest Funnel Suite, would have its own spa and kitchen.

cruises early july

Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel , will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms.

Not to mention the private elevator, pool, and $350,000-a-voyage price tag.

Accommodations of this price and size are generally unheard of in the cruise industry.

cruises early july

Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option.

Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

cruises early july

While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest.

Royal Caribbean and other mass-market cruise lines are beloved, in part, for their unlimited complimentary food options.

cruises early july

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fare also covers caviar, foie gras, and Champagne.

But don't expect any of these to be free on the Four Seasons I.

Breakfast would be complimentary. Lunch, dinner, and booze would not.

cruises early july

The vessel's 11 restaurants and lounges would be priced similarly to Four Seasons' on-land properties. (A dinner entrée at its resort on the Caribbean island of Nevis — also one of the ship's destinations — ranges from $34 to $163.)

The pricing structure may sound odd to most cruise traditionalists. (Hey, at least WiFi would be "free.")

cruises early july

But some of the ship's amenities could look familiar: Like most cruise liners, the Four Seasons I would have a pool, spa, and clubs for children and teens.

The company also promises a lounge and marina that will open onto the water, giving guests direct access to activities like snorkeling or windsurfing.

Four Seasons Yachts plans to take delivery of its $399 million vessel, now being built by famed Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, in late 2025.

cruises early july

A second Fincantieri-built ship would join the hospitality company's fleet the following year. The next vessel would cost more than 400 million euros, about $429.2 million, Four Seasons says.

This isn’t Four Seasons' first foray into itinerary-based vacations.

cruises early july

The company has also found "tremendous success" in its private jet-based "cruises," Alejandro Reynal, the president and CEO of Four Seasons, told BI in a statement.

Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour. Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands."

But its new ultra-luxe cruise arm would be entering an increasingly crowded luxury market, soon to be dominated by like-minded hospitality giants.

cruises early july

High-end Aman Resorts and Orient Express plan to launch their own luxury cruises in 2027 and 2026, respectively.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025.

Interested in a hotelier-owned vacation at sea but don't want to pay the luxury price tag? Margaritaville's cruise is an affordable $75 for two nights.

UK Parliament approves Rwanda deportation bill, ending weeks of legislative stalemate

Sunak pledged Monday that the country’s first deportation flights to Rwanda could leave in 10-12 weeks as he promised to end the Parliamentary deadlock over a key policy promise before an election expected later this year. LONDON — (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak 's latest effort to send some migrants to Rwanda finally won approval from Parliament early Tuesday, hours after he pledged deportation flights would begin in July.

The parliamentary logjam that had stalled the legislation for two months was finally broken just after midnight when the unelected House of Lords “recognized the primacy” of the elected House of Commons and dropped the last of its proposed amendments, clearing the way for the bill to become law.

Earlier in the day, Sunak held a rare morning press conference to demand that the Lords stop blocking his key proposal for ending the tide of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, promising that both houses of Parliament would remain in session until it was approved.

The legislative stalemate was just the latest hurdle to delay implementation of a plan that has been repeatedly blocked by a series of court rulings and opposition from human rights activists who say it is illegal and inhumane. Migrant advocates have vowed to continue the fight against it.

“For almost two years, our opponents have used every trick in the book to block fights and keep the boats coming,” Sunak told reporters Monday morning in London. “But enough is enough. No more prevarication, no more delay.”

The government plans to deport to Rwanda some of those who enter the United Kingdom illegally as a deterrent to migrants who risk their lives in leaky, inflatable boats in hopes that they will be able to claim asylum once they reach Britain.

Despite Parliament's approval of the legislation, further court challenges may still delay the deportation flights, said Tim Bale, a politics professor at Queen Mary University of London.

“I don’t think it is necessarily home and dry,” he said. “We will see some attempts to block deportations legally.”

Sunak has staked his political future to the deportation flights, making a pledge to "stop the boats" a key part of his pitch to voters as opinion polls show that his Conservative Party trails far behind the Labour Party ahead of a general election later this year. Next week's local elections are seen as a barometer for how the parties will fare in the general election.

The debate in Britain comes as countries throughout Western Europe and North America look for ways to slow the rising number of migrants as war, climate change and political oppression force people from their homes.

Small boat crossings are a potent political issue in Britain , where they are seen as evidence of the government's failure to control immigration.

The number of migrants arriving in Britain on small boats soared to 45,774 in 2022 from just 299 four years earlier as people seeking refuge pay criminal gangs thousands of pounds (dollars) to ferry them across the channel.

Last year, small boat arrivals dropped to 29,437 as the government cracked down on people smugglers and reached an agreement to return Albanians to their home country.

“I think the most important takeaway is quite how desperate the government clearly is to get this piece of legislation through on the grounds that it will enable it to at least make a down payment on its promise to stop the boats,” Bale said.

While Sunak acknowledged that he wouldn’t meet his original deadline of getting the first deportation flights in the air this spring, he blamed the delays on continued resistance from the opposition Labour Party.

On Monday, Sunak said the first flights would take off in 10-12 weeks but refused to provide details about how many people would be deported or exactly when the flights would occur because he said that information could help opponents continue to try to frustrate the policy.

In preparation for the bill’s approval, the government has already chartered planes for the deportation flights, increased detention space, hired more immigration caseworkers and freed up court space to handle appeals, Sunak said.

He also suggested the government was prepared to ignore the European Court of Human Rights if it sought to block the deportations.

“We are ready, plans are in place, and these flights will go come what may,” Sunak said. “No foreign court will stop us from getting flights off.”

The current legislation, known as the Safety of Rwanda Bill, is a response to a U.K. Supreme Court decision that blocked the deportation flights because the government couldn't guarantee the safety of migrants sent to Rwanda. After signing a new treaty with Rwanda to beef up protections for migrants, the government proposed the new legislation declaring Rwanda to be a safe country.

The bill has been stalled in the idiosyncrasies of the British legislative system. The House of Lords is charged with scrutinizing and offering amendments to measures approved by the House of Commons, but it doesn't have the power to block legislation outright.

As a result, the Rwanda bill bounced back and forth between the two houses of Parliament, with the Lords repeatedly offering amendments only for them to be rejected by the Commons, which then sent the legislation back to the upper house.

Critics of the government’s policy refused to be drawn on their next move. James Wilson, the director of Detention Action, which campaigns against human rights abuses in the immigration system, urged the public to look past the political stalemate and remember what is at stake.

“Ultimately, the most important points here are not the ins and outs of Parliament, and the things that are happening there,'' he told The Associated Press. "In the end, this is about people. This is about people’s lives.”
