For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

Airline food is not intended for human consumption. It's intended as a form of in-flight entertainment, wherein the object is to guess what it is, starting with broad categories such as "mineral" and "linoleum."

Air travel survived decades of terrorism, including attacks which resulted in the deaths of everyone on the plane. It survived 9/11. It'll survive the next successful attack. The only real worry is that we'll scare ourselves into making air travel so onerous that we won't fly anymore.

Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.

Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.

I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.

Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.

Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.

At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.

If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

I got a motto – like your work, love your wife.

Del reveals himself at the end of the movie as a kind of Ghost of Christmas Future for Neal. Del lived a life on the road and now the road is all he has. There's no home to go back to. It gives Del this painfully real insight that comes off as sweet and maybe even a little naive when his motto is heard early on in the film, with the words taking on more meaning by the end once the audience knows the truth of Del's life.

“Please. Have Mercy. I’ve Been Wearing The Same Underwear Since Tuesday.”

At the pair's lowest moment, Del and Neal need to get a room for the night as the car they rented is now mostly destroyed, and the temperature is getting even lower than usual on their icy journey.

With very little money left, Neal is forced to beg and barter in order to get a room, eventually trading his watch but not before making this hilarious plea to the motel receptionist with an incredibly relatable Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote for anyone who has had travel troubles.

Del points out that Neal has a habit of handling his groin by making this comparison to the skills of basketball legend Larry Bird, flipping the tables on the much more eloquent Neal and leaving him a little lost for words.

Neal may have a short temper at times, but he certainly hasn't encountered someone like Del before. Their drunken banter is hilarious as the two share tequila and Doritos, and as they settle down for the night, Neal throws him a compliment.

Unique is the right word to describe Del. The audience never knows what will come next for the two. But the audience does know that Del will deal with it with an optimistic attitude, unlike Neal's pessimistic view. Opposites do attract.

Arguably the most iconic, heart-wrenching dialogue exchange in the movie (aside from the ending) as Neal tears into Del. But despite Del's flaws, he knows what he is and what he isn't. He's a genuine person whose only problem is being too nice. It's not too often a person like Del meets a guy like Neal.

When they do, the two personalities are bound to clash, it's inevitable. Neal's words hurt, but Del doesn't let them get him down, even if there's an unavoidable tinge of sadness behind them that Neal only comes to notice in hindsight.

One of the reasons why Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is often spoken about is its twist ending. Not an M. Night Shyamalan twist , but one that opened America's eyes to an ongoing problem not many were too comfortable to talk about – homelessness.

Del Griffith had been living on the road for years because there was nowhere else to go. This particular Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote was a genuine surprise for the audience that brought the humor of the movie down to earth. Audiences didn't see this coming but were glad to see Del on his way home with Neal for Thanksgiving Dinner with something he's missed for 8 years: family.

This is the real low point of the movie before Neal opens the door to his room and invites Del in, rekindling a spark of friendship between the two. Experts reveal how to snag better prices and perks by traveling during the week.

Think twice about being a weekend travel warrior , as experts say you can snag better prices and perks if you travel during the week.

Although traveling over a weekend typically allows you to save your vacation days, the costs and benefits you may get from opting for weekday travel can offer other advantages.

Some of these perks can be saving money on hotels and transportation costs, encountering fewer crowds, snagging midweek discounts and in some cases finding hospitality incentives.

"Tuesdays and Wednesdays are considered the best days to travel to avoid crowds and, most often, to take advantage of lower prices," Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Leisure travelers drive up prices and create crowds on weekends, she noted. Business travelers generally head out Monday and return Friday — "impacting availability around the ‘bookends’ of the weekend," said Twidale. 

Travel experts shared more about why midweek travel is a smart choice.

"Simply put, fewer people are traveling during the week than during the weekends, so you’ll have a better selection and pay a lower rate for a room that could cost tens or hundreds more once Friday hits," Christie Hudson, Expedia’s travel expert in Seattle, told FOX Business. 

For example, on the Expedia app recently, a Monday stay during June at the Hotel Chelsea in New York City was around $500 per night — but it rose to $657 on Friday of the same week, Hudson pointed out.

Hudson said cities are great options for midweek travel, namely due to fewer crowds. 

"You get the best of both worlds — adventure and convenience with more elbow room and cost savings."

Plus, cities offer nearly endless entertainment options.

2. Hotel perks occur midweek

Lower occupancy during the week could work in your favor. 

"Traveling midweek, you are more likely to receive a complimentary upgraded room type," said Liza Adcock, director of sales and marketing at Kimpton Tryon Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. 

Even with trendy destinations, midweek travel offers guests advantages. 

She noted on this point, "We’re offering a promotion this summer to encourage shoulder night travel during the week. For guests arriving on Sunday or Tuesday, we’ll be offering a complimentary upgrade along with 30% off their first night."

Even with trendy destinations, midweek travel offers guests advantages. 

"There’s an increased likelihood of being able to accommodate early check-in, less demand for amenities like the pool and more dinner reservation availability," said Mark Hayes, general manager of the Kimpton Aertson a property in Nashville’s midtown neighborhood.

Even abroad, there are opportunities to benefit from a midweek trip.

"Weekdays are a great time to explore the abundance of historical landmarks, museums, and dining offerings."

In London, for example, you may find fewer crowds in touristy spots throughout the city.

"Midweek stays offer discerning travelers the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in London’s culture and esteemed establishments with fewer crowds, allowing for a more exclusive and perhaps more personal experience," said Patrick Katzenberg, general manager of The Londoner, a boutique hotel in London. 

"Weekdays are a great time to explore the abundance of historical landmarks, museums , and dining offerings that London has to offer that might usually have long wait times or limited space."

3. Flights can be discounted

Flying on a Tuesday or a Wednesday could result in some lower fares, depending on the destination or the time of year. 

So, if you can take a midweek flight, you could save some money.

"Traveling on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday sees fewer people traveling in general versus a Monday or a Friday," said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for Going.com in New York.

Flexibility is also important. 

Consider alternate airports, discount airlines and off-peak times for your flight for even more opportunities to save. 

4. Attractions & entertainment can be cheaper

Sally French, travel expert with NerdWallet in San Francisco, said midweek discounts are abundant in terms of tickets to attractions and entertainment. 

For example, she said Disneyland is running a ticket promotion this summer, selling three-day tickets for $149 for children and $249 for adults.

The catch? "The deal only applies to weekday tickets, Monday through Thursday," noted French. 

But if you want the freedom to go any day of the week, including weekends, Disney is selling a similar (albeit less optional) ticket deal for $199 for children and $299 for adults.

Be sure to do your research and due diligence — and check into programming and events during the week vs. weekends. 

5. You'll have more breathing room on the other end — and maybe even more fun, too

There’s yet another advantage to a weekday getaway. "Taking a midweek break sets you up for a smooth transition back to reality," said Hudson of Expedia. 

You can "spend your weekend unwinding at home, unpacking and gearing up for the week." Your vacation-to-workplace transition could be easier this way.     

Midweek travel goes beyond just saving time and money. Weekday travel is just more fun and rewarding, experts say.

For spontaneous midweek travel, simply pick a weekday destination and go. Any problems that might disrupt plans instead create unexpected adventure. 

"You have more options and more opportunity to be fun and spontaneous when you travel in the middle of the week," GoRVing spokesperson Monika Geraci told FOX Business.

Airfares will likely be cheaper this summer — unless you're flying abroad

Americans planning to take to the skies this summer can expect lower prices on domestic flights but pricier fares for international trips, according to travel booking app Hopper. 

The average ticket price for a flight within the U.S. will be $306, down from $376 last summer, while peaking at about $349 around the July 4 holiday, Hopper  forecast . By comparison, a ticket overseas will cost between $1,000 and $2,000 because more Americans are itching to visit foreign destinations like Rome, Seoul and Istanbul, Hopper said. 

"Many people who couldn't travel during the pandemic decided that is the one thing they really wanted to do when lockdowns ended," Clint Henderson, managing editor at travel news website The Points Guy, told CBS MoneyWatch. "People have been saving their travel dollars — and points and miles — for several years, and they are ready to spend on seeing new places. Some folks haven't seen their families in several years and they are traveling now, too."

Much pricier to fly overseas

Airfares on international flights are projected to hit their highest level since 2019, before the pandemic grounded most vacation travel, Hopper said. Tickets to Europe and Asia alone have jumped $300 compared to last summer. 

The average ticket to Europe will cost around $1,100 each, up sharply from $861 in 2019, while average prices to Asia will top $1,800 per ticket, up from $1,121 in 2019, according to Hopper. The average air ticket to Africa or the Middle East will cost around $1,454, up from $1,236 in 2019, and a trip to Australia and surrounding nations is expected to average $1,709, up from $1,128 in 2019, the app predicts.

Three reasons explain it's getting more expensive to fly overseas, said Hopper economist Hayley Berg. First, the cost of jet fuel has jumped since the pandemic, with airlines passing along some of the added cost to travelers. The cost of jet fuel this month is about $91 a barrel, compared to $15 a barrel in May 2020, according to International Air Transport Association data .

"Though fuel costs have improved considerably in the last 15 months, prices remain the highest they've been since late 2014," Berg said in a statement. "Higher fuel costs will continue to put upward pressure on airfares, especially on expensive long haul international routes."

Airlines also haven't increased seat capacity on planes despite rising demand, further pushing up prices. Finally, Berg said Americans are aching to fly overseas because 2023 marks the first full summer that international destinations will have lifted their pandemic protocols.
