Who doesn’t love walking the aisles of your local outdoor store or surfing the web for sweet camping gadgets we don’t need but want? I am admittedly a collector of gear—many pieces my wife says I don’t need. My argument: camping gadgets make the trip more fun and luxurious. I love prepping and packing for my trips into the wild. I venture into my gear shed and search the shelves for gear that will enhance my car camping or backpacking trip. Over my lifetime, I’ve backpacked over 6,000 miles and slept outside over 1,000 times, so I have some strong opinions. Here are some of the best camping gadgets and some newer ones that I can’t wait to introduce into my regular camping routine.

How I Chose the Best Camping Gadgets

I looked through my gear shed and thought about what products I’ve used over and over again. I also considered a few newer products I’ve recently come across that seem like they’ll stay front and center in my gear collection.

From the day these came out, I have used them on almost every camping and backpacking trip. At 2 ounces, I can even justify packing these for the backcountry. 

They do not replace a headlamp but do add ambiance and even enough light on high to read in my backpacking tent. I even have a set of these above the headboard at my yurt. I have the older version that has two settings (low and high), while the newer version flickers. When you stuff the lights in their translucent bag, it becomes a lantern. 

They do need three AAA batteries, but can be powered (not charged) by a USB port. Several clips allow you to hang them in your tent or from an awning at your campsite. There are three options: regular white, red, or blue/green.

This ultralight hand towel is soft, absorbent, and quick drying. While backpacking, a towel seems like an unnecessary luxury, but when it takes up minimal space and weighs less than 2 ounces, it becomes a staple. The hand towel is ideal for a quick-dry after taking a dip in an alpine lake, wiping the condensation off your tent, or drying a pot. It doesn’t feel abrasive like some microfiber towels and its 70 percent polyester and 20 percent nylon construction is anti-pill for durability and comfort. 

The end of the towel has a snap button hang loop so you can attach it to the outside of your pack while you hike. This way it can air dry and you don’t have to stuff a still-wet item back in your bag. It doesn’t take long to dry, and is ready to use again by lunch. The compact size and fast drying makes it great for car camping and travel, too.

This is the one gadget my wife claims we actually need. I owned the original pump for the twist-lock valve, but when Therm-a-rest upgraded their pads, I forked over the $40 to buy the pump that works with the new winglock valve. With a weight of just 2.3 ounces, this is a luxury worth carrying. No more huffing and puffing to blow up mattresses at camp after a long day of huffing and puffing on the trail. 

The tiny pump saves time and your lungs by inflating the best sleeping pads in less than 3 minutes. This is especially important when you’re camping at higher altitudes and already out of breath from the hike. The other benefit to not blowing up a pad is that no moisture from your breath inside can add weight and create mold.

Deflation is equally easy with the pump. No more folding, squeezing, sitting, and laying on your pad to get all the air out. Just attach the deflate side of the pump and turn it on. All the air gets sucked out, making it super easy to roll it up.

It seems every household has a Solo Stove , or some version of it these days. This is the mini and more portable version. It weighs just over 2 pounds, so an easy accessory to transport from the car to any campsite. 

I like that I just need some smaller twigs and sticks to get a small fire going. We use this on our outdoor eating table to keep the bugs away and add a little ambiance. 

The two pots (3L and 1.5L) are perfect for cooking meals, and the sturdy tripod allows you to hang and cook over it easily.  

Best Tote Bag: Yeti Camino 35 Carryall

When I first got this 35-liter bag, I balked at the stiff price. However, I quickly realized the price equaled the Yeti quality and reputation. I have years of using and abusing this bag—adding up to hundreds of times—to verify its durability.

Even though the bag weighs 3.1 pounds, it can carry an insane amount of weight (1,500 pounds), and the handles are easy to manage and grip. The bag has one huge top opening with a smaller zippered pocket inside that can be closed with a simple latch. (Do note this not a cooler).  

The sides are stiff and stand up straight, so protect whatever food you pack in. The welded construction combined with thick, durable waterproof material makes this bomb-proof. It is also super easy to clean and can be wiped down both inside and outside.

This is one of the newest tools from Gerber, and I really dig some of the unique features and all the tools packed into this 3.3-ounce package. The whole package has a gate clip carabiner that can clip to your bag, belt, or anything you want it to.  

The 2.2-inch plain edge blade with a liner lock fits perfectly in my hand and can handle any campground chore. The knife is very easy to open one-handed. The scissors are strong and can through hard plastic like a zip tie. Other tools are the awl, ruler, ferro rod, sharp saw, and file. 

Every single tweezer the best multi tools is dark in color and easily gets lost on the ground. However, this one has a bright orange handle that is easy to spot if you place it down. The tweezers stick in the carabiner on the tool to stay stored until needed, but the orange handle makes them easy to find quickly. The tweezers are also very strong and easily pulled out several rose bush thorns while bush-whacking in Alaska.

Another feature that stuck out to me compared with other multitools is the “tent stake puller.” I never thought I would need a tool to pull out stakes, but as soon as I used it, I couldn’t go back to my old methods of kicking the stake to loosen and using my hand. The J-hook tool folds out directly from the handle in the middle of the tool,

This rechargeable LED lantern features nine different modes, switched with a quick shake (I do admit this feature is sometimes finicky). The regular white 500-lumen setting can illuminate an entire camp. Or just spice up camp with a romantic glow using the softer colors. The multiple color options can be solid, flicker, fireworks, or cycle through the colors, which reminds me of the dancing northern lights I see in the winter. The bottom has a simple on/off button that also allows you to shift through the many color options. 

The 13-ounce package has a metal hanger on top so you can hang it from your tent, deck, or camper. It is rechargeable and can last up to 200 hours (on low). There is also a USB port if you need to use it to charge another device. There is a mini 250-lumen version of this for sale too. 

Best Seat: Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat

This is a game-changer for every trip I am on. The 2-ounce weight is negligible, so there is actually no excuse not to carry this. It provides a barrier between your butt and the ground—key for me when taking a break during a XC ski or snowshoe trip. It not only provides comfort, but some warmth. 

When you can’t carry one the best camping chairs , this portable option is convenient to bring anywhere. It folds like an accordion and opens up to a 13 x 16-inch seat. I use this when sitting on snow, wet ground, hard ground, alpine tundra cover with berries, at a picnic table, at a concert or sporting event, kneeling on the ground doing gardening work, and so much more. It can also be a great addition to your first add kit as a splint or a bit more cushion under your sleeping pad. When I am guiding clients on a hiking adventure, I bring one for them. 

There is an option to buy it with ThermaCapture, which has some heating properties by reflecting your body heat back up to you, which I use for winter activities.

No more scrounging around looking for a stick to poke your fire and watching it break or burn. This carbon steel tool has a small ax at the end, serrated hook for gripping and rolling logs and a poker so you can prod your fire all night long. 

It is beefy, but lightweight at 1 pound 9 ounces. The oversized molded rubber gripped handle does not get hot. At 26 inches long, it is perfect for medium size fires. 

I have been using this the last couple of months with my Solo Stove and around the campfire and I am hooked, literally.

There are a lot of camping gadgets available out there, and great ones too. However, we used our years of experience with this space to select what we think are the finest tools for enhancing the camping experience.

Function: Obviously, when facing the great outdoors, you want something that will be helpful to you in some way, whether you knew you needed it or not. Ever wake up in your tent, drenched in sweat, and beg the universe to send you a breeze? This portable fan is for those of us that know that pain.

The Ritz Carlton of tents. Really, all of Snow Peak's tents are backcountry luxury, but this wall tent is basically a mini house. It offers a living, dining, and sleeping areas. Bring that "Hemingway on a Safari," type of luxury to your next group camping trip.

NOMAD Grill & Smoker

Unless you have a ton of car space, packing in a grill is a pain in the ass. NOMAD's suitcase grill is the exception. Easy to pack, easy to use, easy to clean, and surprisingly spacious.

If you're going way off the grid, where you're guaranteed not to have cell service, a satellite communicator is a necessity. Garmin's InReach Mini offers simple SOS, as well as more complex two-way messaging, location sharing, and weather updates.

I always had issues with packing cooking knives. So much so, that I'd normally just make do with a pocket knife and cutting board instead. But now, you can pack this GSI knife set into it's little carry bag and toss it in with the rest of your kitchen gear. It's, weirdly, the greatest backcountry luxury.

My family has an ancient Coleman packable table that's still functional. This Oniva model is as close as you'll get to that in 2024. It should still be working in 2054

Sometimes a big hard-sided case is overkill. Sometimes you're going on a days-long rafting trip. For those instances, replace a camp case with a big waterproof bag. At 105 L, barely over $200, and made by the brand commercial fishermen trust, the Grundéns Shackleton is one of the best deals on the market.

Camping chairs are inherently uncomfortable, except for this guy. Sure, it's not a La-Z-Boy, but it's about as close as you'll get to it in the wilderness. The Siesta is padded in just the right places and can even recline, it has a 300-lb. weight limit, and it is light as all hell. Get this: It even has a cupholder. What more could you really want in the great outdoors?

Sure, you're trying to turn your phone off and get away, but if you're on an extended trip, it's nice to be reachable. Keep your phone juiced no matter how primitive your campsite is with this smokeless, wood burning stove and phone charger.

Goofy looking, but so, so necessary. This BioLite headlamp has a great fit (no bulky battery pack) and stays powered up to 40 hours, depending on the setting. It's also very affordable. There's nothing as infuriating as setting up a tarp. Maybe it's because of my low IQ, but I've never had a good time doing it.

There's only six tie-offs, and the two pole system lets you set it up completely solo. On my own, I can have this thing up in a matter of minutes.

The Ruffwear Knot-a-Hitch system is one of my favorite items for camping with my pup. We used it for her first camping trip and found that it was easy to set up and gave her some freedom to explore while we set up camp.

The length goes up to 36” and is adjustable to make it shorter. I found it perfectly adequate for what we needed. The stow bag is pretty compact for packability. I also loved its bright red color, which made it easy to see so I didn’t accidentally walk right into the rope!

I can’t rave enough about the Ruffwear Bivy dog bowl for not just camping, but literally anytime we’re on the go. I’ve brought it to our backyard, the beach, hiking, breweries, and more. It’s super lightweight, fits easily in my bag when collapsed, and fits quite a bit of water…up to 7.6 cups.

We use it a lot, and It hasn’t leaked once. It works for food or water, making it very versatile and the accessory loop for clipping it to your pack makes it perfect for hitting the trails and campsites. It even has reflective trim on it, ideal for when it starts to get dark while camping.

The pour spout is helpful in preventing spills too, and the fact that it’s shatter-resistant is very much appreciated, especially for camping.

It’s very durable as well – we brought it on a camping trip where our puppy laid on it in the dirt and it came out in the washing machine, making it look like new. Although it comes with its own stuff sack, it still takes up a bit of room so it’s best suited for car camping ventures.

I usually pad around a campsite in Crocs . But if you're planning on doing anything more active, trail running shoes are the way to go. They're lighter, more nimble, and just as sturdy as hiking shoes. A Stink-Free Shirt

Merino wool is hand's down one of the best materials to wear for extended periods of time outside. It wicks away sweat and doesn't trap body odor too much—good news for anyone sharing your tent. I particularly like the loose, light combination of merino wool, Tencel, and nylon in Icebreaker's shirt, which I wear all year round. It's cool enough for sunny, 75-degree trail runs, and it layers well. The company's shirts are also durable; I have been wearing them regularly for years. Available for men or women .

A Customizable Tent

My colleague Scott Gilbertson and I both own different versions of this tent. A tent roundup is forthcoming, but I've tried and liked the MSR Habitude ($500) and Snow Peak Dock Dome ($1,396) very much. That said, REI's stand-up tents strike a good balance between technical specs, durability, and price. Ours dates from 2011 and is still going strong. I particularly like the many, many pockets. 

The main reason we end up using this tent the most, however, are the accessories. The mudroom ($100) is a necessity in the Pacific Northwest, and the porch ($199) can either be attached to the tent or used as a separate sun shelter.

Restful Sleep

The Zenbivy Light Bed is comprised of multiple pieces, all of which are sold separately to help backpackers customize the weight. The entire system (which includes a mattress, sheet, quilt, pillow, dry sack, and compression cap) weighs about 2 pounds. The quilt, sheet, and mattress pad are the core pieces—I didn’t love the pillow, but a spare 7L compression bag should work as a reasonable substitute.

This system isn’t lightweight or compact enough for backpacking, but the compressed bundle is satisfactory for car camping and bikepacking . What makes it worthwhile is its versatility. There are three different sleep options: quilt mode, mummy mode, and rectangular mode. I’m a tornado when I sleep, much to the chagrin of every bedfellow I’ve ever had. Traditional sleeping bags make me feel claustrophobic—I usually end up sleeping on a camping pad with a few blankets, which is the opposite of a streamlined system. Adequate Seating

If you camp with your family or a significant other, having doubled-up equipment is a power move. On warm nights, we have a two-person sleeping bag ($200) that fits everyone, and we recently acquired a two-person camping chair. This Kelty Loveseat is big and sturdy enough to accommodate my 70-pound dog, who has never really understood why we get cozy camp chairs and sleeping bags on a trip while she has to sleep in the dirt or on a dog bed. (She usually solves the problem by co-opting my sleeping bag, but that's another issue altogether.) 

To be honest, it's huge, heavy, takes up a lot of space, and is awkward to fold. But it's all worth it once you cram everyone you love on it in front of a fire. 

A Bad-A$$ Knife

No food tastes as good as the food you cook outside, and one of the most basic chef's tools is a knife. If you need cooking inspiration, I follow @menwiththepot on TikTok and bought my husband the stainless-steel cleaver and sheath for his birthday. The shape is a cross between a backcountry hunting knife and a standard kitchen cleaver, but we now use it every day for doing everything from dicing onions to carving up chickens and pork shoulder. If weight isn't an issue, I suggest swaggering around your campsite wearing this on your belt.

A Contained Fire Pit

Last summer was one of the worst fire seasons across the American West, and it's not likely to be much better this year. Make your s'mores a little safer with a light, portable, and easy-to-use fire pit. Primus’ Kamoto fire pit packs flat, and it has an integrated ashtray and a grill grate. I also have a much more expensive one from Snow Peak I love—you can pre-skewer chicken kebabs to whip out once the fire is ready.

A Sturdy Cooler

Yeti's coolers are legendary for their toughness. But they're also heavy , especially when loaded with ice and comestibles. The Tundra Haul weighs 37 pounds unloaded, but you don't have to carry it. Just pull it behind you with the heavy-duty aluminum arm and one-piece, puncture-resistant wheels. A Big Water Filter

My family of four, plus a dog, usually opts to camp in the backcountry rather than trying to keep everyone quiet at one site in a crowded campground. Last year, MSR's fast, high-volume water filter was a game changer. Rather than hand-pumping individual water bottles for cooking, you just hang 10 liters of water in a bag on a nearby tree branch. Gravity forces water through the filter, and you simply unhook the spout to fill bottles or pans as you need it. It also gives you a convenient excuse to go paddleboarding without your children. “Oh yes, I need to refill water … I'll be back in an hour.”

Reliable Duffels

I could write an entire story on how to organize and pack your camping gear, which will be different depending on whether you're backpacking (zip pouches!), car camping (bins!), or staying in an RV (RV!). For a family of four that camps in the backcountry, I pack big, burly duffels and organize them by category: sleeping, wearing, and eating. My favorite big eco-friendly duffel is unfortunately sold out at the moment, but I also like the Patagonia Black Hole duffels.

Patagonia now uses recycled polyester for its Black Hole line, which has also been treated to be water-resistant; I've packed them into canoes and onto paddleboards without getting my gear wet. They also have backpack straps for longer hauls, and the daisy chains also let you tie bags together or clip wet toddler shoes on the side.

A Tough Carryall

No matter how carefully I pack, with two children it's inevitable I will forget something. That's why I love this bag , which I keep in the car to throw in last-minute items; whether that's bowls and blankets for lunch, or beach towels, bathing suits, and flip-flops if we're heading straight to the beach. It stands up on its own molded bottom, is made of Yeti’s abrasion- and puncture-resistant Thickskin, and has webbing for quick-clipping car keys or water bottles. Yeti has a complete line of durable bags of all shapes and sizes, but this one is my favorite. 

Even if you have a camp lantern (I like this basic one ), you need lights if you're sleeping outside. After several years of testing headlamps, this one from BioLite is still the best I've tried. Because the battery is mounted on the back instead of on the front, it has a slim profile and stays flush and secure against your forehead instead of sagging and bouncing around. 

It fits over beanies or under hoods and has four different lighting modes, such as a red light for finding things in the tent after my kids have fallen asleep. It's rechargeable, so you can plug it into your car's adapter if you forgot to charge it before you left. The only problem is that the battery will eventually conk out. Each charge is supposed to last about 40 hours, but after three years of constant use (I also use it for running in the winter), it only lasts me 20 to 25.

An Emergency Beacon

Satellite messengers can seem intimidating, but the Somewear Hotspot is the easiest and most attractive one to use. It tethers your phone to the super-fast, low-flying Iridium network so you can send emergency alerts and texts, or find maps when you're off the grid. Somewear's founders worked at Apple, Tesla, and Intuit, so both the software and hardware are easy to use. It can ease your mind if you're camping with small kids; however, I also suggest bringing a portable charger or a solar panel, as you'll need your phone to use it. 

A Bathroom Break 

The unfortunately named Shewee Extreme is for people who don’t usually stand while they pee. It’s amazing. You simply unzip or shimmy down your pants a bit, place the hard plastic gadget against your body, and aim. The company recommends practicing in the shower before you embark on your trip, but once you get the hang of it, your life will be forever changed. I started keeping one on hand while attending protests last spring, and it’s also handy for festivals, hiking, or icky public restrooms. You can store it in the included carrying case, and there’s an extension tube for when you’re wearing bulky clothes. The recyclable plastic repels water, so you can shake it when you’re done, and clean it with soap and water when you’re able to. —Louryn Strampe

A Backcountry GPS

My worst nightmare is getting lost while camping. And it's scarily possible, too, because while I love being outside, I also have the internal compass of a drunk sea urchin. If you, too, can get lost while walking 10 feet from the trail to pee, I recommend the Garmin Instinct Solar . The Instinct is one of Garmin's most popular watches. One of the most fun things to do in the great outdoors is to turn your eyes skywards. If you’re spending the night in your backyard, or are a once-a-summer kind of camper, most sleeping bags will do the trick. But if you want a bag that’ll give you the freedom to camp year-round, with the comfort of 700-fill-power repurposed down, then you want “the one.” The North Face’s One Bag is a 3-in-1 system that can be altered depending on the climate—think of it like those zip-off pants that turn into both capris and shorts. For summer nights when temperatures stay above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, stick to the thinner outer layer; in higher altitudes, or shoulder seasons, use the removable middle layer. There’s nothing like the cozy flicker of a campfire, but sometimes you need a little more light. For middle-of-the-night bathroom trips or better visibility for after-dinner card games , pack a portable lantern the whole family can use. Another car camping accessory you may want to add to your gear closet: a tarp that offers more coverage for dinnertime or hanging by the campfire. This one attaches to most vehicles, and its sturdy pole means you can leave it up overnight, allowing for continued coverage from the sun, rain, or wind.

If you're camping with a big group you're likely to have a lot of stuff, from outdoor gear to base layers in colder months, to snacks. Your tent will be your home for the duration of your camping trip, so make sure to bring it. I personally bring multiple types of fire starter, including a Bic lighter, fireproof matches, and a little flint kit. It might seem like overkill but since I always keep them in my hiking pack anyway, and because they are lightweight, it doesn’t burden me in terms of pack weight or convenience.

4. Pocket Knife

A pocket knife or multitool like a Swiss Army Knife will always come in handy when you’re on a camping trip. They can be used for nearly anything, including tent repairs, opening food supplies, and collecting kindling. 

5. Cooking Set 

While you can live on trail mix, canned beans, and assorted pre-packed snack foods, camping in a tent is much more enjoyable with good food. Bring a cooking set designed for tent camping so you can enjoy hot fireside meals that provide more sustenance than a pack of Pringles.

I never realize just how dark nighttime is until I’m gracelessly tripping over tree roots and rocks at oh-dark-hundred on a camping trip. Pack a flashlight with extra batteries on your next camping trip to avoid any unexpected trips, falls, and tumbles.

7. First Aid Kit 

It goes without saying that a well-stocked first aid kit is essential to tent camping, or any camping trip at all. There are prepackaged first aid kits at outlets like REI that include coagulation medicines (to promote blood clotting), antiseptic ointments, anti-inflammatory pills, and more. It is always better to be prepared in the case of an emergency. 

8. Water Bottle 

Water bottles are essential to bring on your tent camping trip, whether your campsite has running water or not. If you’re camping at a site that doesn’t have running water, you’ll want to fill your water bottle with the larger containers of water that you bring with you. 

• Water filtration system if you plan on drinking creek water
• Thermos for tea or coffee
• Coffee making setup (if you’re a caffeine fiend like me)

9. Hiking Pack

It’s safe to say that if you’re going on a tent camping trip, you’ll probably be doing some hiking too. Bring a hiking pack that’s been professionally fitted to your torso and waist. This will make sure it is comfortable for you to wear and use. It also does double duty by holding some of your other essential camping supplies. 

10. Weather-Appropriate Clothing

We’ve all driven out to a campsite wearing sweats, hoodies, and fuzzy socks, but these clothing items aren’t the only ones you’ll want to pack for your trip. Make sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing, both for the temperature itself and any forecasts calling for rain, snow, or unusual heat.

Top Ten Items for Your Cabin Camping Packing List

If you’re planning a cabin camping trip, chances are you’re looking for comfort levels that fall somewhere between tent camping and glamping. It’s one of my favorite ways to camp when I’m looking for the benefit that only four walls (and a space heater) can provide.

Because cabin camping is more accommodating than tent camping, you’ll want to bring some extra supplies to make the most of your trip. 

1. Bedding Linens

Cabins have at least one bed frame and mattress set up, and some even include  extra bunk beds. What they don’t provide are clean linens, so bring your own sheets, pillows, comforter, and blankets. 

2. Toiletries

Cabin campsites also have showers included in either the cabin itself or in their communal bathrooms, so make the most of this opportunity for hygiene by adding basic toiletries to your camping packing list. Soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste are basic necessities you won’t want to forget, and I like to bring dry shampoo in place of liquid shampoo and conditioner to quickly freshen up my hair. I hate having a cold, wet scalp while out camping. 

Also pack: 

• Your own towels and washcloth

3. Chargers for Your Electronics 

If your cabin has outlets, you’ll want to bring chargers for your cell phone, tablet, or laptop (if you bring them and there is Wifi or you’re using a hotspot).

Camping in a cabin has its perks, including a sheltered space to enjoy some games after the sun has set. Pack board games, books, and even a laptop that has pre-downloaded shows and movies, in case your campsite doesn’t have a data signal you can use with a hotspot. 

5. Lanterns and Flashlights

Even if your cabin has indoor lighting, it’s still a good idea to bring lanterns and flashlights on your trip. They will provide lighting at your fireside picnic table and on your way to the nearest restroom facility if you need to leave the cabin for that

6. Wood and Fire Starters

Wood and fire starters aren’t as essential to cabin camping trips as they are to tent camping trips, since the cabins naturally provide insulation and shelter from the elements. However, they’re still very helpful to bring with you for staying warm after dark and for cooking.

Pro Tip: Some campgrounds will already have cooking grates. Be sure to check before you head out. 

7. Kitchen Tools and Utensils 

Some campgrounds have  communal outdoor cooking stations that provide stovetops and outlets for your kitchen gadgets. Check for your campsites amenities before you embark, and even if your campsite doesn’t have a cooking station, still bring basic cookware. You’d be surprised how much you can cook over a campfire!

Items like a cast iron skillet, dutch oven, spatulas, and tongs will be very handy. Also bring bowls, plates, and basic utensils. 

8. Food and Drinks 

Your options for food and drink are expanded when you’re camping in a cabin. Take the opportunity to pack delicious, cookable food in a cooler and get to cooking. You can also bring chilled drinks of your choice, which I highly recommend.

9. Storage and Disposal Items 

The rule “leave no trace” applies as much to cabin camping as it does to tent camping. Bring trash bags, Ziplocs, and a cooler to ensure that all your belongings stay contained and are properly disposed of before you leave the campsite. 

Cash is king in the camping world. It’s  especially useful when you’re staying at a campground.  Often there is a general store onsite where you can pick up any supplies you forgot, snacks, and even movie night admission out on their lawn.

Top Ten Items for Your RV Camping Packing List

When it comes to packing for an RV camping trip, you won’t necessarily have the amenities of a cabin campsite, which will warrant you bringing some tent camping supplies, but you will have the comfort and protection similar to a cabin. Another complicating factor? Your RV is a home-on-wheels with needs both similar to and different from your family vehicle. Be sure to pack the following:

1. Drinking Water Hose

A drinking water hose is a must-have for RV camping. It allows you to connect to potable water sources and have running water in your RV. This will be what you drink, cook, and bathe with, so be sure you don’t leave without yours. 

2. Surge Protector

Safeguarding the electronics in your RV is a good idea, especially when you’re out in a rural area on a camping trip. Bring a surge protector to guard against any unexpected power surges from your RV’s power source—phenomena such as lightning strikes can cause a surge that damages your RV’s electronics. It’s a preventable way to prevent any shocking accidents on your camping trip. (Pun intended!)

3. RV Bathroom Supplies

One of the perks of camping in an RV is that you have a built-in bathroom—no need to trek out in the dark to use a Port-A-Potty in the middle of the night. Bring toilet paper that is septic tank friendly, a sewer kit, and appropriate RV toilet chemicals to keep your bathroom running smoothly. 

4. Tire Pressure Gauge

You never know what could happen when driving your RV out to your campsite, so bring a tire pressure gauge to keep an eye on your tires. Whether it’s a nail on the road  or cold weather causing a decrease in pressure, your tire pressure gauge will alert you to any complications so you can drive with peace of mind.

Because your RV is like a home on wheels, you can expand your camping trip kitchen pack list to include all the goods. Skillets, saucepans, cutting boards, cutlery, utensils, dishes, and a water pitcher, are all items that you might want to bring.

7. Cleaning Supplies

RV’s are confined spaces and can quickly get dirty while on the road. Bring general cleaning supplies to keep your RV neat. Trash bags, all-purpose cleaner, toilet bowl brushes, and a dustpan all come in handy when you’re out at a campground. 

8. First Aid Kit 

First aid kits are essentials on my list for all different types of camping, but it’s worth noting that you’ll want to pack a couple extra items if you’ll be camping in an RV. 

A fire extinguisher is a must-have for kitchen fires and electrical fires, so pack a miniature one designed to fit under a kitchen sink when you set out on your adventure. I also recommend more intensive items like splints, saline solution, and thermometers—all items you might leave behind if you were tent camping or cabin camping.

9. Tool Kit 

In addition to a first aid kit, you should also bring a tool kit with you while on an RV camping trip. 

Basic tools allow you to repair small issues in the RV and are also multipurpose when hiking and exploring. Consider packing a hammer, nails, screws, screwdrivers, an Allen wrench, and duct tape on your next trip.

10. Bedding and Clothing 

RV camping is the type of adventure where you can bring a range of comfortable clothes. 

In addition to bringing your favorite PJ’s and lounge clothes for relaxing inside the vehicle, you should also pack hiking clothes (including good base layers, outer layers, and socks), swimsuits for any campsite swimming pools or nearby designated swimming areas, and even fancier clothes for taking photos while you’re sightseeing.

W ith "glamping" and comfort-conscious camping  getting more trendy year after year, we can likely all agree that these days, many folks tend to head out for off-the-grid adventures with a few more gadgets than old-school campers are used to that help make "roughing it" feel a little less like roughing it.

There is, however, a fine line between setting up camp with a few hardship-easing gadgets on hand and hitting the out-of-doors with a trove of high-priced and high-tech camping accessories to take the trip to the next level . For the purpose of this list, we've opted to ignore the latter category and focus instead on practical gadgets that can make your camping experience a little more comfortable or easy to manage. Here are a few handy campground gadgets that meet our criteria for cost and cool factor, among other considerations. And yes, they can each be purchased for under $50 at Camping World.

Stansport Indoor/Outdoor Insect Zapper & Lantern Combo

Few things can upend your comfort zone in the wilderness faster than an infestation of flying, biting insects. Unfortunately, there are also not many things you can do to keep those winged nemeses at bay when roughing it at a campground, save for loading up on bug spray. However, you might be able to stave off unwanted insects with the help of a portable bug zapper, which you can pick up from Camping World for just $21.99.

As its name implies, Stansport's Insect Zapper & Lantern Combo functions as a handy bug zapper and a source of illumination for your campground, thanks to a built-in bulb capable of casting up to 180 lumens of light. While the extra light is nice, bug-wary campers will no doubt be more interested in its bug-zapping capabilities. In that department, the Stansport device fronts an ultraviolet LED light that lures flying insects into its 1,000-volt grid.

The device can operate up to 18 hours as light and offers 24-hour bug protection as a zapper, though it's unclear how long the battery might last when the light and zapper are used in tandem. The good news is that the battery is rechargeable via USB charging cable (included), so you can charge this gadget on the fly if needed. Although Camping World only has two reviews on this product, both users rated it 5 stars. Truly bug-wary campers out there may want to consider buying a couple of these zappers.

Barska WP Blueline Monocular

For many outdoor enthusiasts, no trip into the wild is complete without a good sightseeing hike. If you're eager to get a closer look at some of the stunning vistas surrounding your camping site, you might pack an ocular device to enhance the view. Smart binoculars can help you identify birds on your camping trip and may be the device of choice. But if you want to carry less weight on a lengthy hike, a lightweight monocular is a solid alternative to bulky high-tech ones. 

A quick search on Camping World will turn up the Barska 6 x 30-mm WP Blueline Monocular, which should satisfy the needs of any user in the field without breaking the bank. The Barska monocular will set you back a mere $44.99, which should be more than palatable for most view-loving campers. At that cost, users get a fully waterproof device with coated lenses and a BK-7 Porro Prism that deliver bold images 6x magnified. A rubber-armored housing ensures those features are protected from most bumps the monocular might endure in the field.

While there are no consumer reviews for the Barska monocular on Camping World, Amazon users are mostly satisfied with the device, though some questioned its weather-proofing capabilities and the toughness of its overall build. Nonetheless, at $45, the Barska monocular could be the perfect gadget for any weekend in the woods.  

Solo Stove Pot 900

If you're set on spending a few days communing with nature, you'll eventually need to sort out a warm meal or two. There are plenty of high-tech gadgets that help make cooking outdoors while camping easier , and Solo's Stove Pot 900 is a relatively straightforward item that will do just that. You can grab one from Camping World for a reasonable $47.49.

Now for a little bad news, which is that Solo's Stove Pot 900 is not a functional stove in its own right and is instead designed to be used in tandem with the  Solo Stove Lite  sold separately for $69.95 via Camping World. However, if you're a serious outdoor enthusiast, there's a decent chance you've already picked up a little Stove Lite for camping, and if that's the case, the Stove Pot 900 may help you up your campsite cooking game. Made from premium 304 stainless steel, the pot works by simply sitting on top of the Stove Lite, which warms any foods or liquids inside.

The major drawback is that the Stove Pot holds just 900 milliliters, meaning it may be best utilized when cooking for one. Apart from the potential size issue, Solo Stove Pot users had largely positive things to say about the device, even if some recommend taking extra care not to burn your fingers when using it.

O2 Cool Water Misting Fan

While an misting fan might be a useful camping gadget to use year-round , it will be especially handy in the summer months. That's particularly true if your camping trip is slated to include physically strenuous activities like hiking, canoeing, or biking. In extreme heat situations, even some less strenuous activities like fishing can be hard to manage, so it can be handy to have a fan around to help regulate your body heat. If that fan comes equipped with a misting feature, all the better. 

Handheld misting fans are relatively easy to come by in outdoor supply stores, and you can buy one from Camping World for $14.99.  As far as gadgets go, the AA-battery-powered fans are not exactly on the cutting edge of technology. However, they easily rank among the most beneficial and user-friendly camping gadgets you can find, requiring only that users refill them with water when they are empty or change their batteries when they are out of power.

Given their cost, pack-friendly size, ease of use, and potential effectiveness for helping campers beat the heat, it almost feels irresponsible not to spend $15 on a misting fan before you set off on your next camping adventure. Despite those facts, some may be turned off by the AA power source and may be willing to spend a little more on a rechargeable USB option .

TRUE SmartKnife+ 15-In-1 Multitool Pocket Knife

Anyone who regularly spends their spare time by a campfire might tell you that having the right tools around can make or break your camping trip, but packing all the right tools for your trip can be daunting. One solution is to pack as many space-saving and multi-functional gadgets as you can. When it comes to saving space, a sturdy multi-tooled knife is an essential, and  Camping World offers such a gadget at a cost of $34.99.

The TRUE SmartKnife+ is actually a 15-in-1 multitool, combining the oxidized 420 stainless steel knife with three flat drivers, a magnetic 1/4" bit driver and holder, a file, wire strippers, rulers, wrenches, a pry bar, and a bottle opener. Equipped with a pocket clip, users can easily carry the tool with them instead of packing it away. Plus, the knife's locking mechanism ensures safety no matter which tool you're using.

While the 2.375" partially serrated blade might be too small for some campers' tastes, most Amazon users praised this multi-tool gadget for its sharpness, toughness, and versatility. However, some did complain that the blade is overly stiff right out of the box and may require several uses before it loosens up. Even still, as far as negatives go, stiffness may be a problem campers are willing to deal with in the short term, particularly at such a budget-friendly price.

Do I Need Special Cookware For Camping?

Technically, no. You could bring along the pots and pans from your kitchen at home and probably manage to prepare a meal at a campsite. But the biggest issue is weight—heavy pots can fall off compact camp stoves, not to mention weigh down your pack. Also, most camping cookware is designed to nestle for compact storage. While not technically essential, having great camping cookware makes your camping experience so much more pleasant that it’s more than worth its expense.

What Is The Best Material For Camping Cookware?

Steel, aluminum and titanium are the most common, with cast iron having its place in the mix, too. Steel is tough and affordable, but it’s also heavier than titanium or aluminum and takes longer to heat up. Aluminum is in the middle in terms of price. It’s lighter than steel and it heats up faster, but it gets dented and damaged more easily. Titanium is lightweight and very strong and it heats quickly and evenly, but it's pricey. Cast iron is heavy and slow to heat, but it holds heat very well. As for which is the best, that’s a matter of preference, budget and gear weight.

How Do You Clean Camp Cookware In The Field?

When possible, clean your camp cookware without soap, as the scent can attract animals and damage plant life. You can usually scrape your cookware nearly clean with a wooden or silicone spatula, and then use a rag and some water (and elbow grease) to get the more stubborn bits. Cleaning your cookware as soon as the cooking is done while it’s still warm helps, as well as boiling water in the pot or pan dirty from heating soup or chili or stir-frying veggies. Canoeist on camping trip found dead in BWCA lake

The body of a Duluth man was found by canoeists Friday in a lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim was identified as Mark Ham, 62, who family members said was on a solo camping trip in the BWCA.

According to the Sheriff's Office, canoeists called 911 at about 5 p.m. Friday to report a capsized canoe and a partly submerged body on Lake Agnes, about 25 miles north of Ely.

Officials with the Sheriff's Office rescue squad and the U.S. Forest Service responded and recovered the body. The victim was not wearing a life jacket that was found at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office were investigating.

Summer is coming, and with it, pleasant temperatures across much of the United States that just beg for time spent outdoors , enjoying nature.

Planning a family camping adventure with kids or grandkids is a great way to make your precious bonding time together last longer — and naturally unplugged too.

When it comes to entertaining children, time in nature has been proven to be one of the best options, with benefits such as building confidence, teaching responsibility, getting kids moving, and even reducing stress and fatigue, according to the Child Mind Institute, a New York–based nonprofit that works to improve the lives of children struggling with mental health.

But to plan a camping adventure with young children , you might be wondering where to start — and that applies whether it’s your very first time camping at all or your first time attempting to do it with kids in tow.

“I would suggest going as a couple first or camping with friends before taking children,” says former scout leader Peggy Cleveland, 61, of Tacoma, Washington. It’s important to know that you enjoy the experience before embarking on it with kids, she says.

From there, you can graduate to camping in the backyard with the kids or grandkids, or even venturing to a park or campground close to home, Cleveland says.

“You want to be close enough to home that you can throw everything in the car in the event it is a disaster,” she says.

Limiting your camping trips to a weekend before building up to longer stays is a good idea too, she says. Cleveland recommends a combination of tent and car camping (which is when you pull your car right up to a campsite and keep everything handy, as opposed to hiking to the site and carrying everything with you) for a first camping trip with children.

And new campers might want to consider a fall adventure to start, she says, calling it the perfect season for beginners. “It is not as hot, and the cooler evenings are more conducive to sleep,” Cleveland says.

Slow your pace and enjoy the lessons along the way

Part of the joy of a camping trip with kids is exposing them to life lessons you can’t always instill in the same way when surrounded by four walls at home or in a classroom.

“Activities like setting up camp exposes [kids] to valuable life skills, like problem-solving and resourcefulness,” says Diane Eichler, senior vice president of marketing at Kampgrounds of America (KOA). But it’s important to proceed at a slower pace so kids can keep up with everything that camping involves, she warns.

“Engage them as much as possible and allow extra time for setting up camp, preparing meals, and hiking or exploring, as kids may need more breaks along the way,” Eichler says.

And don’t forget to embrace the magic of the experience together.

“[Kids] bring awe at discovering new things and joy at being in the outdoors,” she says.

While setting up the campsite is a group activity, Cleveland suggests designating appropriate tasks so each child can help in their own way.

“Make sure each child is paired with an adult who is responsible for watching them,” she adds. “It is easy for kids to wander off if they don’t have something to do.”

Cleveland advises staying flexible while also planning each day while camping.

“You won’t be sitting around the campsite sipping wine,” she says. “Do an active activity in the morning such as a hike. Return to the campsite for lunch and a nap for younger children. Look up camp games, or teach them something new like how to make a knot or start a fire.”

For your first time camping with kids, opt for a place with lots of room to roam and explore, says Chrys Watson, 69, a grandmother of seven, including six she’s taken camping.

“If you’re just starting out, a KOA would be a good place,” says Watson. “There are a lot of campgrounds that are out in the woods or up in the mountains that have a lot of facilities too.”

One of Watson’s favorite places to take her own kids when they were younger was Fun Valley Family Resort in South Fork, Colorado. Fishing, hiking, tubing, miniature golf and paddleboats are among the many on-site activities to keep little ones busy.

Closer to their home in Leedey, Oklahoma, Watson and her husband have taken their grandkids camping at state parks, including Roman Nose State Park and Foss State Park.

“Look for places that are wide open, with lots of places for them to climb up on rocks and slide down and explore,” Watson says. “It’s the easiest and cheapest entertainment there is for them. They love it.”

Be sure to set ground rules while camping, she recommends, including ensuring that they understand not to wander off and to be aware of wildlife such as snakes.

National parks have great campgrounds, says Cleveland, but it can be difficult to secure a campsite reservation in peak season.

“Most people are familiar with state parks in their home state but fail to consider other states,” she says, so be sure to research state parks beyond your home base for camping options.

To make sure everyone sleeps comfortably, you’ll want to pack warm, insulated sleeping bags and cushioned or blow-up air mattresses to soften any roots, gravel or rocks under you at the campsite.

Make meal time easy

Gathering around the campfire or at a picnic table under the shade of a tall pine tree to enjoy a meal together is a stellar camping moment. It’s best to make meal time as easy as possible, especially when you’re new to cooking alfresco and with limited utensils at your disposal. 

Sara Healy, a Tampa, Florida, mother of three, has enjoyed camping at KOAs as well as Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts around the U.S.

“Jellystone campgrounds have some of the most robust programming of any campground we have visited,” Healy says, citing tie-dye, candy bar bingo and water play areas as examples.

When it comes to food, she says one-pot meals simplify things.

Her kids always enjoy “hairy hot dogs,” made by slicing uncooked hot dogs into discs and skewering them with three or four pieces of uncooked spaghetti noodles. Boil on a camp stove or over the fire until the pasta is cooked, then top with your choice of sauce. (“My kids liked cheddar sauce the most,” Healy says.)

Watson suggests bringing along a cast iron skillet and grate to place over a fire, as well as a large griddle to use over the fire or with a propane tank.

“We make sweet potato hash, cut up with onions, peppers, eggs and sausage, and stir it all together and make it over the fire,” she says. The griddle also works well for pancakes and other one-dish recipes.

Cleveland points to a mixture of peanut butter, oatmeal, raisins or dried fruit, M&M’s or chocolate chips, and nuts as a breakfast favorite for campers.

“Mix it up according to how many people. No measuring necessary, just add ingredients and mix until it all sticks together,” she says. “Slap about 1 cup per person in a bowl or on plate and eat away. It is so good.”

If you don’t have running water at your campsite, Watson recommends bringing a small tub and 5-gallon container of water for washing dishes.

Whatever you do, don’t forget the fixings for s’mores, Watson says.

“Kids find their fun in nature. You don’t hear an ‘I don’t have anything to do,’ ” she says. But there is one thing they always request while camping: “They want to roast marshmallows and s’mores at dark, then they just want to go to sleep,” she says.

This is a self supported bikepacking course. We ride 30+km per day with loaded bikes. Participants must be physically able to carry their own equipment on their bikes. We will also be camping in a basic camp, toilets are available but this is wilderness camping, there are no showers or back up vehicle. We camp in tents on sleeping pads (all provided) Bikes can be rented from local bikeshops, Adventurefuel Bikepacking does not provide bikes. Your own bikes are recommended.

The aim of this trip is to give you a taste of bikepacking in the most comfortable and fun way possible. Learn everything you can in a stress free, casual (and beautiful) environment. Our experienced guides will teach you all they know about packing, planning, bike mechanics and camping tricks. We have 2, half days in the classroom learning all the bikepacking skills. Then we put it all into action with a 30km backroads ride on Day 1. Day 2 and 3 we head on an overnight camping trip to a stunning camping spot for a real taste of New Zealand away from the crowds.
