How the Spartan Fan Camp provides an inside look at Michigan State Football

Campers and players at the 2023 Spartan Fan Camp.

Play a game of 7-on-7 on the Spartan Stadium field, tour the brand new Tom Izzo Football Building, and talk to players inside the Michigan State locker room.

These are all things that you can do at the Spartan Fan Camp this summer.

The Spartan Fan Camp will take place on Wednesday, June 5th. The one day camp includes a tour of the Tom Izzo Football Building to see the following:

- Nike Tech Lab - Players lounge - Weight room - Indoor practice facility - Video room used to record practice - Team meeting room

The tour will also include presentations by offensive staff members, defensive staff members and the strength and conditioning and nutrition staff.

From there, campers will head to Spartan Stadium to have lunch, tour the locker room, take group photos on the field and take part in a game of 7-on-7 football with the players. Following the on-field activities, campers will be treated to dinner.

Tom Nihra is the Volunteer Camp Director for the Spartan Fan Camp. Tom and his wife own the LLC that is Spartan Fantasy Camp and they run it as a non-profit. Tom also directs the Spartan Fan Golf Camp, which began last year. This year’s golf camp will be on August 23.

Both the football and golf camps benefit the student-athletes directly. This will be the third year that the football camp will be an NIL opportunity for the players.

“I think it gives a real insight into Spartan football,” Nihra said about the Spartan Fan Camp. “You get to hear a lot of things from student-athletes that I don’t think regular people hear.”

Casey Jacobsen, a first year camper in 2023, told Spartans Illustrated that she felt more connected to the players and to the team after participating in the camp. As a result, it increased her rooting interest on fall Saturdays.

“Having that experience, the one-on-one, It was just fun to connect to them,” Jacobsen said. “It was a great connection.”

Casey Jacobsen (left) at the Spartan Fan Camp.

The players engage with the campers through conversations and through coaching campers through drills and through the 7-on-7 game.

“It’s truly run by the student-athletes,” Nihra said.

Frank McGillis has been attending the camp since 2018 and at one of the camps he connected well with former Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi. Lombardi even chose him first to be on his team for the 7-on-7 football game during camp.

Famously, Lombardi went on to help propel Michigan State to a big victory over Michigan in the 2020 season. Lombardi threw three touchdowns against the Wolverines and McGillis felt a sense of pride when he saw those three touchdown passes thrown to the same guy he connected with at camp.

“Dude, I saw those passes,” McGillis said with a grin. “Those passes were coming to me (at camp).”

The cost of the camp is $575, but when McGillis first did the camp in 2018, the cost was around $1,000 for the then two-day event. McGillis had to really think about if he could afford going.

“I am so glad that I did (go) because that first year was just the best,” he said. “For it to be even a little bit cheaper now, for it to be a one-day event - it’s something I would save for all year long to make sure I could attend.”

The $575 covers the cost of the gear that all campers will receive, meals, compensation for the players for helping with the camp and more.

The experience that Spartan fans get in return has left a positive impression on the campers. From shaking the hands of numerous players and coaches and being able to converse with them about topics that typically stay within the walls of the locker room or team meeting rooms, it makes it well worth the time and money for many of the campers.

“The behind the scenes (access) is something to behold,” McGillis said.

Michigan State Dedicates the Tom Izzo Football Building in Recent Ceremony

A sizeable donation from Michigan State basketball alumnus Mat Ishbia paved the way for the opening of the Tom Izzo Football Building.

  • Author: Ezekiel Trezevant IV

In this story:

A recent ceremony hosted by Michigan State inside the Greg and Dawn Williams Lobby marked the official dedication of the Tom Izzo Football building.

The 65,000-square-foot building is an addition to Michigan State's Skandalaris Football Center and Duffy Daugherty Football Building.”

Per a story from msuspartans.com, “The $67.75 million Tom Izzo Football Building is a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on a transformative experience of player development through three primary areas: Performance – with an expanded 19,000-square-foot weight room, a sports science area, and multiple nutrition stations; Rest and recovery – with renovated athletic training areas and recovery modalities; Enhanced social experience – with a new player locker room, lounge, and Nike Gear Lab,”

Construction of the building was nearly complete in 2023. However, the final phase was only recently completed, making way for the building’s official dedication ceremony.

“Construction on the project began in April 2022 and was substantially completed in December 2023; the final phase of the project, which includes a new team meeting room, was finished this month," according to the story . "The team moved into its new locker room last August prior to preseason training camp.

“A new entrance to the facility on the south side welcomes players, staff, and recruits through the Greg and Dawn Williams Lobby, which features trophies recognizing MSU’s six National Championship teams and a dynamic 60-foot by 18-foot angled video wall.”

A record-breaking donation from Michigan State basketball alumnus Mat Ishbia and a sizeable donation from Greg and Dawn Williams helped make the Tom Izzo Football Building a reality.

Per the story, “The Tom Izzo Football Building was made possible through the philanthropic support of Spartan Fund donors. Spartan alumnus Mat Ishbia made a $32 million commitment to MSU Athletics in February 2021 – the largest single cash commitment in MSU’s history from an individual – and the largest portion of the gift ($20 million) focused on the new football facility. In November 2021, Greg and Dawn Williams announced a $10 million commitment toward the Tom Izzo Football Building. These generous principal gifts served as the catalyst for the project.”

Michigan State Vice President/Director of Athletics Alan Haller, Michigan State Board of Trustees Chair Dan Kelly, Michigan State President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith, Michigan State junior defensive back Dillon Tatum, Ishbia and Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo all spoke at the ceremony.

Michigan football's linebacker room continues to thin as two more hit transfer portal

michigan state university room tour

Three Michigan football players officially entered their names into the transfer portal on Tuesday, program spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed to the Free Press.

Linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, linebacker Hayden Moore and kicker/punter Cordell Jones-McNally all have indicated their plans to continue their collegiate careers elsewhere; April 30 marked the final day of the spring window for undergraduate players to enter their names in the portal.

Bridgeman, a former four-star recruit, per 247Sports composite rankings, did not take the field as a true freshman last season and chose U-M over Rutgers and Alabama. It became known he would leave Monday, but his name was not officially put into the database until Tuesday.

Moore, a 6-foot-2, 226-pound linebacker from Parker, Colorado, also did not take the field last season; he chose the Wolverines over Iowa State and Nebraska.

The linebacker room has seen a max exodus since last Jan. 2023, including former linebackers coaches George Helow (not retained), Chris Partridge (fired) and interim Rick Minter (Chargers). Starting linebackers Junior Colson (Chargers) and Michael Barrett (Panthers) have left for the NFL draft, while reserves Joey Velazquez (Ohio State), Jeremiah Beasley and now Bridgeman and Moore have hit the portal.

Home to James Madison College, a residential college that provides a liberal education in public affairs

Built in 1961 and located in South Neighborhood, Case Hall is home to James Madison College (JMC), one of MSU’s three degree-granting residential colleges. The hall was named after Albert and Sarah Case, a football captain and instructor respectively, during their time on campus.

Case Hall was built

James Madison College is a community of like-minded students pursuing degrees that seek to solve political, legal, social and economic issues affecting our world. With a multidisciplinary perspective and focus on applied social science, the JMC curriculum prepares students to face real world challenges with maturity, creativity and responsibility.

James Madison College offers four distinct majors: comparative cultures and politics, international relations, political theory and constitutional democracy, and social relations and policy. Each of these disciplines examine current and past public affairs, policy and issues while also helping students build communication and problem-solving skills. Students are required to complete field experience prior to graduation, ensuring that they will have hands-on experience working in their chosen field. With a post-grad placement rate of about 97%, JMC students can be found in public, private or governmental careers, or in graduate programs across the globe.

James Madison College majors

Case Hall is also home to a Sparty’s Café and South Pointe dining hall, which has home-grown options from farms across the State of Michigan.

Interested students should list James Madison as their major of interest when filling out their application.

Community in your classes

On average, first-year James Madison courses have a class size of 25 students. This makes it much easier to get to know your peers and professors.

Michigan football OL Amir Herring (West Bloomfield) enters NCAA transfer portal

michigan state university room tour

Michigan football 's offensive line room has taken a hit from the transfer portal.

Amir Herring, a former four-star offensive lineman from West Bloomfield who played one game for U-M last season, is in the portal, a program spokesman confirmed to the Free Press on Thursday.

Herring, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound interior lineman, was high school teammates with current U-M wide receiver Semaj Morgan. Unlike the standout pass catcher, however, Herring wasn't able to break into the playing rotation.

Stuck behind possibly the deepest offensive line in America, Herring played one snap at right guard on Oct. 14 against Indiana. He arrived in Ann Arbor as the nation's No. 287 recruit, according to 247 Sports' composite rankings, as well as the No. 14 interior offensive lineman recruit and the state's No. 4 player.

HEALING: Michigan football safety Rod Moore on 'road to recovery' after surgery

Herring, who enrolled early in December 2022, was not mentioned frequently by coaches this spring as a potential starting option; Northwestern transfer Josh Priebe and senior Giovanni El-Hadi are the presumed favorites at guard , with Greg Crippen at center. Jeff Persi and Tristan Bounds are seen as interior depth at guard.

Herring's decision makes him one of three Wolverines to hit the portal this week, with incoming freshman linebacker Jeremiah Beasley (Belleville) going Thursday and three-star defensive back DJ Waller Jr. entering Wednesday .

Bed Size and Height

Residence hall beds require twin extra-long, 80" sheets. Beds are loftable, meaning they can be set at bunked, standard, trundled, or lofted height.

Double rooms will be set to one lofted and one trundled bed at move-in, unless the layout does not allow for this. Akers units will have three lofted beds and one trundled bed. While bed adjustments cannot be accommodated during move-in, residents can request a bed adjustment by submitting a maintenance request at liveon.msu.edu/maintenance. Facilities will begin bed adjustments in September.

  • Standard - normal bed height
  • Trundle - about 3 feet off the ground
  • Lofted - 5 feet off the ground
  • Bunked - one bed standard height, one bed lofted height above

Linen Exchange

Each traditional residence hall provides a linen package for each student upon request at the service centers. This white linen package includes twin, extra-long sheets, a pillowcase and two towels. The linen package can be exchanged weekly for clean linen at no additional cost.

If you would like to purchase colored sheets, they are also available in many retail stores. The University Activities Board also coordinates a linen sale as a fundraiser for their free events offered to students. Look for more details closer to move-in!

Carpet Sizes

Carpet sizes vary by residence hall. Use these  carpet size guidelines  when making purchases. We encourage everyone to purchase carpeting that has a finished banded edge to prevent tripping as carpet tape is not allowed in the residence halls.

Air Conditioning

Van Hoosen Hall, University Village Apartments, and 1855 Place are air-conditioned.   If you are assigned to any other on-campus housing location, we strongly suggest you bring a fan. Personal air conditioners of any kind are not allowed to be brought or used in your room.   Residents with a confirmed medical need may request an air conditioner for their residence hall room at an additional charge.   Students will need to complete the following steps:   1. Log into My Housing and click on the “Apply for Medically Necessary Air Conditioner” link, then follow the instructions to submit an application.

2. Work with your treating physician to complete the Treatment Provider Report Form, which is emailed to you upon submission of your application.

3. Submit the completed Treatment Provider Report Form to the Housing Assignments Office.

Students will receive their approval or denial notice from the Housing Assignments Office. Those approved will be charged $150 to their student account for the installation and maintenance for the academic year. The charge cannot be refunded or prorated.

Students with disabilities seeking an air conditioner because of a disability should contact the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD).

Water Filters

Each year, Michigan State University’s water is tested. The results are included in an annual Water Quality Report .

Before you invest in a water filter, we recommend you try out the water once you get to campus. If you and your roommates decide you would like a water filter installed in your residence hall suite or apartment, you will need to purchase the filter and submit a maintenance request for the REHS Facilities team to install it.
