Multicultural Medley

View of the street with Masjid Sultan in the background in Singapore

Singapore has four official languages and even more ethnicities that have influenced its culture. Discover the city's Muslim heritage at Sultan Mosque along Arab Street and its Chinese character (and food!) in Chinatown. Little India is the heart of the city's Tamil Indian community, while Kampong Glam is the epicenter of Malay-speaking Singapore.

Sculptural vegetation towers from Gardend by the Bay in Singapore

Two Sides of Nature

Sculptural vegetation towers from Gardend by the Bay in Singapore

Singapore's tropical landscape is as diverse as its culture. The Singapore Botanic Garden (and adjoining Orchid Garden) approach horticulture from a more traditional perspective, while the spacey Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay would seem more at home in "Avatar" than an issue of "Better Homes and Gardens."

Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore

Zoom In, Zoom Out

Head to the rooftop of the massive Marina Bay Sands to enjoy a panorama of the Singapore skyline, which is also beautiful as seen from the city's symbolic Merlion statue on the other side of the bay. Or visit a more inward-looking Singapore icon when you order an original Singapore Sling cocktail at the Long Bar of the Raffles Hotel.

Wantan Mee, popular street food noodles with bbq pork, in Singapore

Local Cuisine

The best way to get a cross-section of Singaporean cuisine is to visit its street vendors, or hawkers, in hubs like Tiong Bahru. Jump onboard a Singapore cruise to try Cantonese-derived wantan mee noodles, with dumplings and yellow egg noodles topped with slices of char siu pork. Snack on chai tow kway , also called carrot cake, even though it's made from rice flour and daikon radish fried with eggs in pork fat.

Colorful variety of chopsticks in a small shop in Chinatown, Singapore

Singapore is a shopper's paradise, whether you stick to the high-end boutiques of Orchard Road or the local shops throughout the city. One way to guarantee a special souvenir during your Singapore cruise vacation is to shop in the city's ethnic neighborhoods: Seek out chopsticks and lacquerware in Chinatown or incense and South India dolls in Little India.

Top Sights & Attractions for Cruises to Singapore

Gardens by the bay.

The Gardens by the Bay have become completely synonymous with Singapore. Here you’ll find sculptures in the shape of funky flowers lit up in bright colors. The garden is home to multiple greenhouses, like the Flower Dome, where the temperatures and the plant life are always in spring. In the Cloud Forest, a small mountain was built for visitors to scale, bringing a tropical mountain climate all the way to Singapore. Guided tours and shows happen daily, and there’s something for all ages here, including a children’s garden and a sculpture park.

Singapore Botanic Garden

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the few places to see the island’s rarest vegetation and greenery, making it not only a paradise but also one of the most important preservation efforts in all of Asia. When you cruise Singapore, take a leisurely walk through the grounds, where you can literally stop and smell the flowers. The Orchid Garden offers the largest collection of orchids in the world, and imported swans float along Swan Lake for a romantic afternoon out.

Singapore Flyer

Take a ride on the incredible Singapore flyer, a massive Ferris wheel in the heart of Singapore. Rides last about 30 minutes and offer incredible, panoramic views of the city during the adventure. Watch the futuristic skyline on one side and the peaceful harbor as ships float in and out on the other. At night, the Flyer even lights up.

Night Safari

For a close look at some of Singapore’s most exotic wildlife, take an unforgettable night safari, where you’ll enjoy a tram ride through this nocturnal zoo in the heart of the rainforest while on your cruise to Singapore. Nearly 150 species call this ecosystem their home, and 38 of them are endangered. There are even shows like fire-twirling and dancing, and smaller group buggy rides through the park with an expert guide.

Top things to do in singapore, go shopping on orchard road.

The definitive spot for shopping in Singapore is Orchard Road, the shopping district home to over 5,000 businesses. You can lose track of time here while on a cruise to Singapore, whether you’re looking to explore art galleries, try on new clothes, or browse for high-end goods. There’s even a rare whisky museum where you can enjoy whisky tastings. Orchard Road is also home to many bars and restaurants that add to Singapore’s gourmet scene.

Board a Bumboat

One of the best ways to admire the Singapore skyline is by taking a scenic bumboat cruise down the Singapore River. From the water, you’ll marvel at the historic Boat Quay, as well as the city’s more modern architectural sites, including the towering Marina Bay Sands and Helix Bridge. If you board a bumboat at night, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy a thrilling laser show with music, light, and water that come together for a magnificent visual experience.

Walk Singapore’s Chinatown

When stopped before your cruise from Singapore, you’ll see the city has a vibrant energy that is infectious. Singapore’s Chinatown is a must-see for some of the cheapest, best street food in the city, shops featuring local artists and designers, and beautifully preserved temples. Walk the narrow streets, stop for a bite to eat, or tour the restored temple Thian Hock Keng.

Where should I eat in Singapore?

Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck

Make a reservation for one of the top spots for dim sum and its namesake, peking duck, here. There’s a location very close to the shopping along Orchard Road. This cozy spot is ideal for lunch after a long stretch of boutique hopping. You’ll want to plan ahead. Advanced orders are required if you want to nosh on the Beijing-style roasted duck.

Tarts at Tarte by Cheryl Koh

Address: #01-12, 1 Scotts Road, Singapore

When you’re craving sweets, Tarts at Tarte bring you pretty much every variety of tart, cake, and truffle available. Here you’ll find 66% dark chocolate tarts, blood orange tarts, and light-as-air sponge cakes. Bring some back to the ship with you as you cruise Singapore. Coffee and tea are menu staples, too.

Address: #01-03 Dorsett Residences, Singapore

The one Michelin-starred Candlenut frequently makes “best of” lists in Singapore for its gourmet takes on Peranakan cuisine. The menu changes based on seasonal and available produce, and also offers luxe a la carte options from baby squid to chicken curry. Chef Malcolm Lee brings an extravagance to recipes passed down through generations of family.

Park Bench Deli

Address: 179 Telok Ayer St., Singapore 068627

Unpretentious and styled like an American deli, Park Bench Deli is a place to hang out with a juicy sandwich and a cold beer. From a classic fried chicken sandwich to the more adventurous pastrami tater tots, head here for comfort food in the heart of Singapore.

What’s the culture and history of Singapore?

The island of Singapore was settled by the British in the early 19th century, who then built up the port and encouraged international trade to the area. Singapore gained independence in 1965 and quickly became one of the wealthiest and most expensive places in the world as investments in housing, education, and trade began to expand. Singapore’s culture is a melting pot, known for influences from both Asia and Europe, where you’ll hear residents speaking many languages from English to Mandarin to Tamil. Its warm climate year-round makes it a favorite for tropical weather lovers.

Where can I go shopping near the Singapore cruise port?

Find luxury brands and well-known names when you’re shopping at the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which is just a short 15-minute ride from the cruise center, particularly if you’re interested in high fashion and Singaporean designers. Singapore’s Chinatown is also a must-see for its energy, where vendors not only sell cheap eats at their stalls, but also offer fashion from independent and emerging designers and artists looking to support their craft. Because so many vendors also sell food, you can hop from boutique to boutique and stay close to some of the best food before your cruise from Singapore.

How can I get around Singapore?

Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is comprehensive and easy to navigate, not to mention efficient and clean. Hop off at the Marina South Pier station, just a short walk from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, after spending time in downtown Singapore and the city’s main sights. Of course, taxis are very common in Singapore, but only stop at designated stands to drop you off once you’re in the city to curb traffic and make the drop-off process smoother for the city. Singapore doesn’t host ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft currently. The city’s trishaws are mostly a tourist activity now, so be careful not to pay too much for one.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of Singapore is the Singaporean dollar (S$). Tipping isn’t common practice in Singapore, and credit cards are considered the norm here. You can find currency exchange at banks and conveniently at the cruise port, called the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore.

Highlights of Singapore

Known for its high costs, lack of attractions, and cleanliness, Singapore is often avoided by travelers due to its high costs, cleanliness, and perceived lack of attractions. Singapore is the biggest mistake you can make on your SE Asia tour! Singapore is a great place to visit in SE Asia. Here are some of the highlights you should know before visiting the city.

Cultural Diversity

In terms of cultural diversity and religious diversity, Singapore is quite distinct from its neighbors. Various national holidays are celebrated on the island, including many different religions. Four official languages are spoken on the island, including English, Tamil, Malay, and Mandarin. A wide variety of places of worship and culinary experiences await visitors.

With its many restaurants offering cuisines worldwide at varying prices, Singapore has a lot to offer for such a small island. Last year, Singapore received a Michelin star, which is an excellent place to start if you have difficulty selecting among many restaurants. Local chefs have also created modern Singaporean food over the past few years.

The Shopping

It's a shopping paradise for shopaholics! The malls are everywhere in Singapore, so retail therapy is a big deal. Singapore's Orchard Road and Marina Bay Sands are synonymous with high-life shopping, boasting brands such as LVMH, Kering, and Prada, as well as international brands. Located along Orchard road, Design Orchard features world-class Singaporean designs. Over 60 local designers, ranging from artisanal wares to furniture and fashion, are showcased on the first floor of the building, curated by beloved local retailer Naiise. Hopefully, we'll score some good deals as well. You will find bargain steals in far east Plaza and Bugis Street while soaking up the wild-child atmosphere. At Haji Lane, you'll find artsy boutiques with a quirky aesthetic. Check out BooksActually and Nana & Bird on Tiong Bahru's Yong Siak Street for some up-and-coming independent stores.

Interesting Spots to Visit to Singapore

You will have a lot to choose from when visiting places while on your Singapore trip. Check out these Singapore attractions you should not miss on your holiday:

Gardens by the Bay

The Marina Bay Sands Observation Deck offers a great view of Gardens By The Bay, one of Singapore's most popular attractions. You will never forget your experience when you visit this place. This is the perfect place for a peaceful stroll with your significant other or a stunning photo for your Instagram profile. Even when lit with colorful lights after sunset, it looks magnificent in the dim light!

Little India and Arab Street

There is a unique experience at Arab Street and Little India, popular tourist destinations. In this paradise-like place, you will find small shops, cozy cafes, and historic mosques that will untether you from the modern city. It offers authentic Arabian cuisine, old buildings, and shopping stalls that give it a heavenly feel. On the other hand, a community of Indians lived in Little India during colonial times in Singapore. Similar to the Arabian Streets, Little India has several stalls and Mosques; it also has restaurants that serve Indian cuisine; and it has Hindu temples such as Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, which is the most renowned.

Clarke Quay

There is still a lot going on at Clarke Quay, another part of Singapore's past. It was the city's hub of commerce in the late 19th century, making it one of Singapore's main tourist attractions. Today it still has a lot of the hustle and bustle, with trendy restaurants, unique boutiques, pushcart vendors, and more, blending Asian and European influences. At night, Clarke Quay teems with chic nightspots, but during the day remains a market.

Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island is Singapore's only beach, but if you're looking for a sunspot, you'll have no trouble finding it. During the summer, visitors can go kayaking and skimboarding at Siloso Beach, where there are free volleyball courts and free volleyball courts. In addition to swimming with dolphins at Underwater World, there are several other beach attractions. One of Singapore's most famous statues, the Merlion, is on Sentosa Island and looks like a lion with a fish body. A panoramic view of the surrounding area can be enjoyed from the top of the statue via an escalator. Try your hand at flying strapped to a water-driven jet pack at The Flying Trapeze or SeaBreeze WaterSports @ Wave House if you're adventurous.

Located northeast of Singapore, Pulau Ubin measures 10.2 square kilometers. It is one of the last two kampongs of Singapore, meaning Granite Island in Malay. In this place, one can get an authentic taste of Singapore as it was. One of the main attractions is Chek Jawa Wetlands. With lush green forests and rolling meadows, Pulau Ubin is a perfect place to relax, whether you enjoy mountain biking or cycling around the pristine island. In addition to hiking and bird watching, it is surrounded by mini Puaka Hill. Kayaking is another popular activity on this island, as are stargazing nights while camping among the mangroves.

The high humidity and heat of Singapore make it a year-round destination. It is best to visit Singapore between June and August to enjoy the best beaches.
