Nurse Navigator and E-visit programs launch
WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals is rolling out two new programs this summer – programs that will make it easier for employees to access care when they need it.
Starting Monday, July 10, employees will have the opportunity to use Nurse Navigators and E-visits to meet their healthcare needs. These resources, both free, should help the organization quickly assess the appropriate level of care for each patient, while, at the same time, reduce the number of unnecessary visits to the Emergency Department, Urgent Care, and other clinics.
“A healthy workforce is essential to our mission of providing the highest level of care,” said Kevin Halbritter, MD, vice president, population health. “As an organization, we need you to be at your best, at your healthiest, and so do our patients and their families. So when we have an opportunity to enhance the health of our employees, we jump at the chance.”
The Nurse Navigators will be available 24/7 at 1-855-WVU-CARE. They will answer questions and offer advice based on their experience. For more complex issues, the nurses will have access to medical references and other resources, as well as other providers. In addition to answering questions, Nurse Navigators will advise callers, as appropriate, to seek medical care; they can even schedule appointments. There may be times when they recommend an E-visit.
E-visits will be easily available through MyWVUChart for these conditions:
- Sinus issues
- Urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Vaginal discharge.
Once you log in, just follow a guided questionnaire, providing information that will either be forwarded to your primary care provider or the first available provider based on your selection; the provider will assess the proper course of action. The response time on an E-visit will be no longer than six business hours if handled by your own provider. If the Urgent Care model is used, a response can be expected within three hours when the call occurs between 8 a.m. and midnight.
These new programs, which will be available to the public at a later date, were created to complement your WVU Medicine healthcare experience. The goal is to use the right care team members to provide the right services at the right time.
WVU Medicine offering patients e-visit assessments for COVID-19 testing
Wvu medicine patients with covid symptoms can now schedule an e-visit through mywvuchart to determine whether or not they need a covid test, officials said..
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - WVU Medicine patients with COVID symptoms can now schedule an e-visit through MyWVUChart to determine whether or not they need a COVID test, officials said.
E-visits are a convenient way to reach a nurse navigator and eliminate the need to wait on hold to speak with someone for assessment, according to a WVU Medicine release.
Officials said symptomatic patients who may need an order for COVID testing can now reach a nurse navigator through MyWVUChart.
The nurse navigator team will use the information provided in the e-visit to assess whether the patient meets the criteria for COVID testing.
If the patient meets the testing criteria, officials said the team will communicate through MyWVUChart and place an order for testing at one of the WVU Medicine drive-through testing centers.
Results of the test will be made available to the patient through MyWVUChart and their primary care provider as soon as they are available.
Patients can access or register for MyWVUChart by visiting MyWVUChart.com or downloading the mobile MyChart app available for iOS and Android devices. To access, select E-visit from the main menu, and then choose the COVID-Nurse Navigator option. COVID-19 E-visits will be reviewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The nurse navigators are not able to place testing orders related to travel or return to work.
The COVID-19 nurse navigator phone number is 304-598-6000, option 4.
Patients who need urgent or emergent medical care should not use the E-visit option. For medical emergencies, call 911 immediately.

WVU football unveils black alternate uniform for 2024 season
by SHANNON STOWERS
West Virginia football surprised its fans Thursday with a new black alternate jersey. (WVU Athletics)
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WCHS) — West Virginia football surprised fans Thursday with a new black alternate uniform.
The alternate uniform, which pays homage to the history of coal and honors miners in the Mountain State, will be used during select occasions, according to a news release from WVU Athletics.
"Our staff did a great job with the design and rollout of our traditional complement of uniforms last week. But we wanted to have an alternate that our student-athletes would enjoy and would connect with West Virginians," WVU Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said in the news release. "If our football team was going to have a black alternate uniform, we wanted it to tell a story and it mean something to our fans. Every design element of the uniform has been researched, carefully thought out and implemented based on what our designers observed on their visit to the mine.”
The jersey focuses on elements that bring light to the darkness. A key emphasis of miner safety is reflectors which are represented throughout the uniform, the news release said. The numbers on the black jersey are a reflective twill, and the wordmark "West Virginia" and an outline of the state are in white to further bring light and complement the reflective twill.
The pattern adorning the sleeves and collar of the jersey was sourced underground in a West Virginia coal mine. A photograph of a sheared mine wall was vectorized before proper palette colors were applied to bring the pattern to life.
The "Black Hat" in the mines is the experienced miner, and the Mountaineers will don black matte helmets when wearing the uniform. The on-field helmet contains an outline of the state and specks of metallic gray in the paint to resemble the shimmer of fresh-cut coal, the news release said.
The center stripe features the coal pattern used on the uniform, but with a white to transparent gradient mimicking the light of a miner's headlamp.
To support the coal-themed black uniform, the WVU Brand and Trademark Licensing Office has developed the "Built on Bravery" Collection. The collection was created in collaboration with WVU Athletics and CLC who worked together with members of the West Virginia coal community to create a product line that complements the new football jersey.
Fans should look for the collection in stores later this summer and in the fall, the news release said.
The program unveiled new blue, gold and white uniforms during the team’s annual Gold-Blue Spring Game.

New Mexico State Aggies News
New Mexico State Transfer WR Planning to Visit WVU Football After SEC School
Even though there’s confidence in the current wide receiver room , the WVU football staff is still on the hunt for more experienced and depth. West Virginia is also looking to take advantage of receivers who entered the transfer portal and are still without a new college home.
A receiver who fits the bill is New Mexico State transfer Trent Hudson. WVU sent Hudson an offer about a week ago as he hopes to play his final college year in a major conference like the Big 12.
After taking a trip to Mississippi State , ironically his most recent offer from just a day ago, this weekend, Hudson tells WV Sports Now that he will be visiting Morgantown the following week.
pic.twitter.com/RiNVOFQhNF — trent (@kingtrent_03) May 2, 2024
In addition to West Virginia and MSU, Hudson also has offers from schools like Arizona State, FAU, Colorado State, Houston, North Texas, San Diego State, Western Kentucky and several others.
Before his lone season at New Mexico State, Hudson spent a year at Trinity Valley Community, catching 50 passes for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns. Hudson made 35 receptions for 551 yards and 10 scores for the Aggies in 2023.
WVU’s interest in Hudson stems from his 6-foot-3 frame as the Mountaineers are hoping to add a deep threat option.

West Virginia’s and North Carolina’s transgender care coverage policies discriminate, judges rule
FILE - Connor Thonen-Fleck addresses reporters while his parents stand by his side, March 11, 2019, in Durham, N.C. West Virginia and North Carolina’s refusal to cover certain health care for transgender people with government-sponsored insurance is discriminatory, a federal appeals court ruled Monday, April 29, 2024 in a case likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s and North Carolina’s refusal to cover certain health care for transgender people with government-sponsored insurance is discriminatory, a federal appeals court ruled Monday in a case likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Richmond-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 8-6 in the case involving coverage of gender-affirming care by North Carolina’s state employee health plan and the coverage of gender-affirming surgery by West Virginia Medicaid.
Specifically, North Carolina’s policy bars treatment or studies “leading to or in connection with sex changes or modifications and related care,” while West Virginia’s bars coverage of “transsexual surgery.”
“The coverage exclusions facially discriminate on the basis of sex and gender identity, and are not substantially related to an important government interest,” Judge Roger Gregory, first appointed by former President Bill Clinton and re-appointed by former President George W. Bush, wrote in the majority opinion.
Similar cases are under consideration in courts across the country, but Monday’s is the first U.S. Court of Appeals decision to consider government-sponsored coverage exclusions of gender affirming medical care — and whether those exclusions are lawful.
The ruling follows a decision earlier this month by 4th Circuit judges that West Virginia’s transgender sports ban violates the rights of a teen athlete under Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools.
Like with the transgender sports law ruling, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said his office planned to appeal Monday’s health care case decision.
“Decisions like this one, from a court dominated by Obama- and Biden-appointees, cannot stand: we’ll take this up to the Supreme Court and win,” Morrisey said in a statement.
North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell, whose department oversees the state’s health plan, said in a news release that Monday’s majority decision was in “direct conflict” with other decisions from federal appeals courts and hopefully will be corrected by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Folwell said the State Health Plan is threatened by financial challenges as the plan’s member grows older and their health declines.
“Accordingly, the Plan cannot be everything for everyone,” Folwell said. “Untethered to the reality of the Plan’s fiscal situation, the majority opinion opens the way for any dissatisfied individual to override the Plan’s reasoned and responsible decisions and drive the Plan towards collapse.”
In the majority opinion, judges said the cost of treatment is not a sufficient argument to support upholding a policy found to be discriminatory.
“Especially where government budgets are involved, there will frequently be a ‘rational’ basis for discrimination,” Judge Gregory wrote.
Both states appealed separate lower court rulings that found the denial of gender-affirming care to be discriminatory and unconstitutional. Two panels of three Fourth Circuit judges heard arguments in both cases last year before deciding to intertwine the two cases and see them presented before the full court.
In June 2022, a North Carolina trial court demanded the state plan pay for “medically necessary services,” including hormone therapy and some surgeries, for transgender employees and their children. The judge had ruled in favor of the employees and their dependents, who said in a 2019 lawsuit that they were denied coverage for gender-affirming care under the plan.
The North Carolina state insurance plan provides medical coverage for more than 750,000 teachers, state employees, retirees, lawmakers and their dependents.
In August 2022, a federal judge ruled West Virginia’s Medicaid program must provide coverage for gender-affirming care for transgender residents.
An original lawsuit filed in 2020 also named state employee health plans. A settlement with The Health Plan of West Virginia Inc. in 2022 led to the removal of the exclusion on gender-affirming care in that company’s Public Employees Insurance Agency plans.
The states’ lawyers argued that treatments for gender dysphoria — all treatments in North Carolina and surgical treatments in West Virginia — are excluded from coverage for everyone, regardless of their gender identity. They claimed only a subset of transgender people suffer from gender dysphoria, a diagnosis of distress over gender identity that does not match a person’s assigned sex.
Before offering pharmaceutical or surgical intervention, medical guidelines call for thorough psychological assessments to confirm gender dysphoria before starting any treatment.
In his opinion, Gregory said that in his view, gender dysphoria is “so intimately related to transgender status as to be virtually indistinguishable from it.”
“We hold that gender dysphoria, a diagnosis inextricable from transgender status, is a proxy for transgender identity,” the judge wrote. “And coverage exclusions that bar treatments for gender dysphoria bar treatments on the basis of transgender identity by proxy.”
Unlike North Carolina, West Virginia has covered hormone therapy and other pharmaceutical treatments for transgender people since 2017. Gregory noted that West Virginia’s program partially or fully covers surgeries to remove and reconstruct sexual organs for non-gender dysphoria-related diagnoses, such as cancer.
After the ruling, West Virginia plaintiff Shauntae Anderson, a Black transgender woman and West Virginia Medicaid participant, called her state’s refusal to cover her care “deeply dehumanizing.”
“I am so relieved that this court ruling puts us one step closer to the day when Medicaid can no longer deny transgender West Virginians access to the essential healthcare that our doctors say is necessary for us,” Anderson said in a statement.

WVU Has Made 2025 CB Aydan West 'Feel Like a Priority'
Momentum gaining for West Virginia on the recruiting trail.
- Author: Schuyler Callihan
2025 cornerback Ayden West (6’0”, 180 lbs) of Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland recently cut his recruitment down to six schools: Cincinnati, Duke, Penn State, Virginia, Wake Forest, and West Virginia.
Let me know where 🏠 is!!! @BrianDohn247 @MohrRecruiting @RivalsFriedman @EdOBrienCFB pic.twitter.com/Gf5dLidvjq — 5⭐️ Aydan West (@AydanWest0) April 26, 2024
“They were the second school to offer me. Through the process they have made me feel like a priority,” West said about his interest in West Virginia. “I talk to Coach ShaDon, Coach Bell and Coach Neal. We just talk about different things, not always football related. Talk about how they see me fitting in the system. I like what the program is doing overall. I like that young players are playing early and the fan base is ridiculous. It’s a real football town.”
Other schools that have offered but missed out on the initial cut include Boston College, Charlotte, East Carolina, Marshall, Mayland, Pitt, Toledo, Virginia Tech, and a few others.
In just three games as a junior, he recorded 10 tackles and one interception. West battled through a knee injury early in the year before shutting it down for the season. He attacked his rehab vigorously with rehab2perform and will be ready to go for his senior campaign.
West will return to Morgantown for an official visit in June.
