Charms of Charleston
Charms of Charleston is a small tour company that offers a Historic City Tour of Charleston with the option of adding on a visit to the Aiken-Rhett House as well.
The latter is a nice follow-up to the city tour as it brings to life some of the histories that were shared throughout the tour.
As a younger company, Charms of Charleston doesn’t attract quite as many visitors as some of the others.
However, this is perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate experience as they often cater to fewer than 10 guests!

Gullah Tours specializes in Charleston’s African American history and Gullah heritage.

Gullah Tours aims to share that language and culture with visitors by bringing you to important historic sites such as Denmark Vesey’s home, Catfish Row, the Old Slave Mart, and the Market, the Aiken-Rhett House slave quarters, and many more.
All tours are led by Alphonso Brown, a passionate historian and licensed tour guide who speaks Gullah fluently.
Gullah Tours are very unique in their approach to Charleston’s history, and so we highly recommend them to those interested in learning more about Gullah’s role and influence in the city.

This is the most affordable bus tour on the list at only $15 per adult for the 1-hour option or $20 per adult for 2 hours.
Additionally, Sites and Insights Tours of Charleston also offer a Sea Island Tour, which is a 2-hour motorized tour that visits both James and Johns Islands.

Sites and Insights of Charleston Tours
Sites and Insights Tours of Charleston offers one package that incorporates an abbreviated tour of Charleston with a visit to John and James Islands to see the Burn Churchyard Cemetery and the Angel Oak Tree.
This 2 ½ hour package tour is their best seller, and it is an extremely cheap way to do both trips.
Discount Sites
If you’re only interested in a bus tour, you might still be able to save some money by using a site such as Groupon or Living Social .
In addition to the discounts these services provide, they also frequently offer coupon codes you can use to save an extra 10% - 25% off or more.
Before you make any purchases, check the top and bottom of the page for any banners that may feature a coupon you can use to save even more money!
FREE TROLLEY
Though there are no traditional hop-on-hop-off bus tours in Charleston, they do have a free city trolley called the CARTA DASH Trolley.
These trolleys travel through the historic part of Charleston, allowing you to see much of what you would on the other guided tours, though without any commentary.
However, if you use our Self-Guided Tour of Historic Charleston or one of our audio tours of Charleston during your ride, you may not even know the difference!
There are 3 different routes that the trolley takes:
- From the College of Charleston to the Aquarium
- Waterfront, Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon, and City Market
- Connects Brittlebank Park and Riley Stadium to the city center
Each of these routes meets at the Visitors Center, Marion Park, and Charleston Museum. Maps are available at each of these locations.

Smoky and dirty but amazing sights
The tour took us past some amazing sights but the bus was smoky and the roof was filthy. The driver would yell at drivers and the horse drawn carriages. I would not tour with them again.
Bus tours are a great way to get an overview of a city. The first day in Charleston we walked everywhere but we wanted to see more of the city so the bus tour was great.
Very interesting tour. Guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Loved the old houses. Rainbow row was different.
The tour gave us just what we wanted--a comprehensive overview of Charleston. Our guide covered agriculture, architect, history and other interesting facts about Charleston. Would highly recommend the tour if you're not familiar with Charleston's various neighborhoods.
A wonderful hour and a half of learning so much about Charleston history from our very knowledgeable guide. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful time experiencing the sites, sounds and experiences of this charming community of Charleston SC. The most amazing part was enjoying it from the comfort of a shuttle. Due to our limited schedule and our desire to fully embrace and understand the city of Charleston this 90 minute tour, more than met our needs. We highly recommend this adventure tour. Our tour guide “Martha” did a fantastic job of helping us to both understand and fully appreciate many opportunities available in this southern community of history and ambience. Thanks for a memorable experience!

Great Charleston Tour!
We took the 90 minute tour of Charleston followed by the boat ride to Fort Sumter. Our tour guide on the city tour was Kim. She was fantastic! Kim had facts, stories and information regarding her hometown of Charleston ... the tour was delightful and the time flew by too fast! The bus was clean and comfortable, with plenty of room and clean windows!! The boat trip and tour of Fort Sumter was also a very pleasant experience. The tour operators did a wonderful job of coordinating the trips back to back.
We just returned from a two week east coast holiday, and the finale was Charelston. We definitely saved the best for last. Decided to start with a Grey Line city tour to get an overview, but it turned out to be so much more. Kim was our guide/driver, on a small 20 pax van/bus which gave us a more intimate experience. For two+ incredible hours she shared her passion, love and experiences. It was as if we had a private tour. So, if you're wondering if you should take this tour, I would say, most definitely, and you'd be cheating yourself if you didn't. A TRUE CHARELSTON M U S T in my opinion.
We took the 90 minute bus trip with Kim Wood, a local Charleston gal with lots of good information about the city and then the boat trip to Fort Sumter. Both were exceptional experiences - well coordinated by Gray Line. Would highly recommend for anyone traveling to Charleston to get a good overview of the city and then you can go back to the spots you are really interested in. Good value for the money.
For about $12 we got to see most of the sites of Charleston! I would recommend doing it early on and it will give you a good idea of the city layout! Our guide was super knowledgeable and friendly and was willing to answer any questions! The buses are small , only holding about 20 passengers and the AC was nice and cool! Well worth the money!!!
This was a terrific way to begin our vacation in the city. Our 90 minute tour really gave us a taste of the city. It was a very busy Saturday and I was glad I wasn't driving! For first timers, this is worth the money. A discount was available at the Visitor's Center.
We had a wonderful trip to Boone Plantation. Our driver, Harry, was very nice and knowledgeable. He did a great job! We enjoyed the day very much! So glad we went. What a beautiful place!

Port of Charleston: A guide to cruising from the Holy City
Frequent cruisers are likely familiar with popular East Coast cruise ports, such as Boston, Baltimore, New York City and Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. But did you know you can also cruise from the Carolinas? The cruise port in Charleston, South Carolina, is a driveable distance from several cities, including Charlotte (three hours) and Raleigh (four hours) in North Carolina.
Charleston might not be a bustling cruise home port like PortMiami , but the city is a destination in its own right. And if you're sailing with American Cruise Lines or Carnival Cruise Line, you'll find plenty to do in the Holy City before or after your cruise.
Plus, the Port of Charleston is easy to get to from Charleston International Airport (CHS), and the city offers a good selection of points hotels for a pre- or post-cruise stay.

Cruise lines sailing from the Port of Charleston
Currently, two cruise lines depart from the Port of Charleston.
American Cruise Lines ' Historic South & Golden Isles Cruise and Holidays in the Southeast cruise depart from Charleston. Additionally, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Sunshine cruises out of Charleston on round-trip four- to 10-night sailings to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean .
Charleston also serves as a port of call on repositioning cruises or longer East Coast and Bahamas/Bermuda itineraries with cruise lines such as Viking, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Airport near the Port of Charleston
The Port of Charleston is 12 miles (about 25 minutes) from Charleston International Airport (CHS). Various airlines fly to CHS from other U.S. cities, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
Your disembarkation time might not align with your outbound flight time. So, if you have time to kill at the airport, you can spend it at The Club CHS lounge. The lounge is in the main terminal on the second level toward Concourse B. A daypass is $50 per person unless you have a Priority Pass membership through premium credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required). AAA members get in at a discounted rate of $42.50.
How to get to the Port of Charleston
You have a few options for getting to the cruise port from the airport or a hotel in Charleston.
Hotel shuttles
On-site parking isn't available at every hotel in downtown Charleston, so leaving your car at the hotel while you cruise likely won't be the best way to go. However, some area hotels offer shuttle service to the port or provide complimentary transportation within a certain distance from the property. For example, The Dewberry Charleston offers guests complimentary transportation within 5 square miles of the hotel via its Volvo house cars. The cruise port is just over a mile from the hotel.
When you are choosing a pre-cruise hotel, inquire about transportation to the cruise port before you make your reservations.
Independent van/car services
You can arrange private pickup and drop-off through car and van services like GCT Chauffeured Services , which will cost between $100 and $199 for up to three people.
Taxis and ride-hailing services
Hailing a taxi to get to the Port of Charleston is simple. At the airport, taxi service is at the center median just outside baggage claim. Taxis charge a $17 minimum fee from CHS. Taxi fares are based on a trip meter rate of $3 per mile, which includes up to two passengers. You'll either pay the $17 minimum or the fee displayed on the meter at the end of the trip (whichever is the greater amount). Additional passengers are $7 per passenger, per trip. Based on taxi rates in Charleston and the distance from the airport to the cruise port, the estimated fare is $30 to $40.
Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are also an option. Follow the signs outside the baggage claim area to the sheltered pickup area across both roadways. You'll find it to the right of the last sidewalk.
Public transportation
Charleston's public bus service, Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, does not currently provide a convenient station or stop to the cruise port.
Port of Charleston parking
The majority of cruisers sailing out of the Port of Charleston will be driving to the port, arriving the day of departure or the night before. Therefore, the port offers plentiful on-site parking.
Long-term parking for cruise passengers' vehicles at the port does not require reservations. Parking is located within a gated area available only to cruise passengers and not the general public, and port police secure and patrol the site during the cruise.
A complimentary shuttle bus runs between the vehicle parking areas and the passenger terminal on both departure and return dates of the cruise.
The cost for parking standard-size vehicles is $21 per day. The parking fee for oversize vehicles longer than 20 feet (campers, recreational vehicles, buses) is $50 per day. You can pay for cruise parking with a credit card, debit card or money order. Cash is no longer accepted as payment for parking.
The Port of Charleston provides free parking for vehicles displaying a valid accessible parking placard or license plate with ID. Wheelchair services are available inside the terminal. Alert a cruise port staff member for assistance.
Off-site parking is available with private companies like Park & Go , which offers cruise parking for $10 per day. It does not provide shuttle transportation from the lot to the cruise terminal, so you would need to take a taxi or Uber to the port.
A public parking garage is also an option. The maximum rate is $18 per day. The Cumberland Street parking garage (90 Cumberland St.) is the closest one to the port, less than a mile away.

Families will love the resort-style vacation atmosphere of The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. Though not located downtown, it's right on the water, with taxi service from the marina to the city center.

Restaurants near the Port of Charleston
Charleston lands on many "best foodie destination" lists — and for good reason. Visitors can choose among just-caught seafood, local Lowcountry cuisine and upscale meals from James Beard Award-winning chefs. The Port of Charleston is convenient to the historic downtown area, so cruisers will find a bevy of destination dining and solid local eateries within walking distance or a short taxi ride away.
Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar (186 Concord St.), the place for fresh seafood and waterfront views, is right next door to the cruise port. Head to Poogan's Porch (72 Queen St.) for traditional Southern dishes served in a historic Victorian home (five minutes from the port). Other options within a 10-minute drive of the port include Chubby Fish (252 Coming St.) or local favorites like Rodney Scott's BBQ (1011 King St.) and Cru Cafe (18 Pinckney St.).

Things to do in Charleston before or after your cruise
Charleston tops many "best destinations" lists thanks to its array of historic sites, cultural attractions and natural diversions. If you decide to spend more time in the Holy City before or after your cruise, here are some things to do in Charleston.
Hit the beach
The city of Charleston is on a peninsula surrounded by a harbor, so there's no beach access within its limits. However, if you crave a little extra sand time, you'll find some popular beaches within a fairly short drive.
A little over 9 miles (about 20 minutes) from Charleston, Sullivan's Island is a charming beach town that offers wide beach areas with water sports opportunities (kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing). Peruse local shops, or explore history at Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park.
Folly Beach is less than 12 miles (about 21 minutes) from downtown. Its 6 miles of beach provide plenty of room for shelling, surfing or shark-tooth hunting. Or, take a guided kayak tour to Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve for a closer look at the historic Morris Island Lighthouse.
Visit the International African American Museum
This 150,000-square-foot museum houses more than 150 artifacts, artwork and interactive digital exhibits that chronicle the survival and resilience of slaves who likely made their way to Charleston through Gadsden's Wharf, the country's largest slave auction site from 1772 to 1808. The museum resides on that site (Gadsden's Wharf, 14 Wharfside St.).
Explore the aquarium
Cruising with the kids? Families will want to check out the South Carolina Aquarium (100 Aquarium Wharf), less than a mile from the cruise port (about a four-minute drive). The waterfront facility is home to more than 5,000 animals, including rehabilitating sea turtles in the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery facility. Two touch tanks hold sharks, horseshoe crabs, stingrays and sea stars. The aquarium also hosts daily dive shows and rotating exhibits.
Take in some art
If you're into art, two Charleston museums should definitely be on your radar. The three-story Gibbes Museum of Art (135 Meeting St.) is the oldest museum facility in the South. Here, you'll find a collection of more than 10,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs and furniture.
Head to the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston (161 Calhoun St.) to peruse innovative works of emerging artists, seasonal shows and rotating exhibits. Admission is free.

Shopping near the Port of Charleston
Pick up last-minute cruise items at Tanger Outlets Charleston (4840 Tanger Outlet Blvd.), about a seven-minute drive from CHS. Harris Teeter (290 East Bay St.) is less than half a mile from the cruise port, should you wish to grab snacks, drinks and other groceries.
If souvenirs or upscale items are on your list, spend some time along Charleston's iconic King Street. Retailers like Free People, Urban Outfitters and Kate Spade line the cobblestone street along with locally owned shops offering jewelry, home goods and Charleston-branded items.
One of the city's most popular attractions is the historic Charleston City Market (188 Meeting St.). The open-air spot showcases local artisans selling paintings, spices and crafts, including hand-woven sweetgrass baskets.

Downtown Binghamton: Future of City-Owned Site Up in the Air
- Share on Facebook
A prime piece of property in the heart of downtown Binghamton has been idle for nearly two decades and there are no redevelopment plans for the site.
The parcel on the southeast corner of Court and State streets once was occupied by the O'Neil and Ross buildings.
Efforts by preservationists to save those structures failed. The buildings were ordered demolished after pieces began falling onto neighboring properties and into the street.
The O'Neil Building was torn down in 2007 and the Ross Building was removed the following year.
Developer Mark Yonaty had hoped to build a multistory commercial and residential complex at the site but he ended that effort in 2023.
The property was sold back to the city last October. Since then, no new proposals have been discussed for the site.
Mayor Jared Kraham said the property can provide an "economic development opportunity" for Binghamton. He told WNBF News the "city certainly is open for proposals" for a project at the site.
Meanwhile, the grass-covered parcel - which once included tables and benches - sits unused.
The city removed the tables and other amenities in 2015 after a series of problems, including drug overdoses at the site.
Kraham expressed concern that if benches and tables are reinstalled, they might attract people who "just want to hang out there all day."
With summer approaching, there apparently are no new plans being considered to use the city-owned space.

We took the city tour, and while admittedly, getting off/on the trolleys was tricky since they always seemed to be full, we could see it was a busy weekend and they sent back up "off schedule" trolleys. Shout out to Uncle Ted, the tour-driver who we always seemed lucky enough to get. He had that gift where he just made Asheville history come alive, and had us laughing the whole way too.

Mark-Thanks for the feedback. Ted is a great storyteller.
My wife and I usually aren't big fans of trolley tours but a gentleman at the North Carolina Welcome Center highly recommended this tour. He said he grew up in Asheville and still learned stuff on the tour. This is a "hop-on / hop-off" tour that makes a circuit of 10 stops. You're free to jump on or off at whichever sites interest you. At this time of year, the trolley is operating on a one-hour circuit. So, when you hop-off, the next trolley will be back in about an hour. We hopped off at two different stops and spent one hour at the first one and 4 hours at the second one. In the summer, the schedule is more frequent. We parked (free) at the Asheville Visitor's Center and caught the trolley from there. We have two different drivers - both of whom carried on a constant patter. The lady (AC) was more INFORMATIVE, the guy (Uncle Ted) was less informative but more ENTERTAINING. Great way to see Asheville and to learn about Asheville. Conceiveably, you could take the one-hour circuit and hear the whole story and then go back to places you want to see. Tickets are good for 2 days.

Jim-Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are delighted you enjoyed your tour with Aj and Ted. All of our guides offer a unique perspective and engaging stories. We appreciate you.
Very enjoyable. The guides/drivers were very knowledgeable. We started early and had plenty of time to get off all the stops we wanted. The 2nd day free is a nice bonus

Judy D- We are just delighted you had a good experience. Thank you for the feedback.
Fun but very crowded and they packed us in 4 across. All rows seemed fairly comfy but they put me and my wife with two large people and I was on the end and quite literally falling off the trolley if not for the safety railing. Other people were laughing at our predicament yet the Gray Line Trolley folks did nothing. The guide was entertaining and knowledgeable thankfully.

John-Thank you for being our guest on the tour. We’re glad you found the tour guide “entertaining and knowledgeable.” I apologize if you were uncomfortable with the seating arrangement on your tour. There are no assigned seats on the trolleys. It is first come “first come, first served” seating on Hop-On/Hop-Off Tours.
Great trolley tours and great drivers! During certain months the trolley only make stops on an hourly basis so we had to plan accordingly but during the busier months they did look to run more frequently. They hit all of the hot spots in Asheville and the drivers/guides did an amazing job of giving information and history about the area. The price point was also great! For $37 you had all day trolley access for two days.

Connie- Thank you so much for being our guest on the Hop-On/Hop-Off tour of Asheville. We are so glad that you enjoyed it. We live in a special place and love sharing it with folks.
It was okay for the type of tour I went on--we selected the Overview tour, so we got on at the Asheville Visitor's Center and stayed on the bus the entire time. Our tour driver, Matt, was fun and gave us some information about Asheville, though with these type of tours it's always questionable how much is true and how much is legend (or outright made-up things). For my part, I'd prefer these tours be 100% factual and leave the speculation for the mystery or ghost tours. What disappointed me was that about half the stops on this hop-on hop-off tour were at hotels. Which I suppose is great if you are staying at one of the hotels, or would be interesting if there was something of note about the hotel. But only one or two of the five hotel stops had an interesting place in Asheville's history; the rest were just stops to be stops, I guess. Stopping at The Doubletree by the TGI Friday's or whatever doesn't really add to my knowledge or interest in the city or the region. So on that score, I think it would be great if they had established stops that are actually interesting or related to Asheville history and/or culture, where people might want to explore something about this fun town--not just drop offs to get back to their hotel. This tour is great for someone who might have mobility issues and would like to learn some things about town but can't manage a walking tour. I had really wanted to do the ghost tour that Gray Line offers, but it leaves at 7 pm... even in summer, when it doesn't start to get dark until almost 9 pm. A daylight ghost tour has no ambience, so that's not for me.

Hi Aesha- Thank you for the feedback on your experience with us. We take great pride in providing a fact-based tour. Our tour information has been researched by several local historians, as well as the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County. Anything that we cannot present as fact is called out as such to protect the integrity of our tour. Our tour stops serve the areas around them not just the exact location. There is much more to Asheville and the tour than hotels. I am sorry to that you came away with that impression. For example, the only way to see the front of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site (Thomas Wolfe's boyhood home, now a museum that your ticket provides discounted entry into) is from the parking lot of a hotel and we do have an on/off stop there. The Grove Park Inn is an architectural gem and landmark of Asheville. It is also on the National Register of Historic places as is the Haywood Park Hotel (also built by E.W. Grove). The Haywood Park Hotel is in the heart of downtown (inside of the old Bon Marche store), across from the Flat Iron Building, Wall Street, near the Basilica of St. Lawrence, Prichard Park and many downtown stores and restaurants. Our goal is to provide a fun and informative experience. I'm sorry that the tour did not meet your expectations.
I rented a trolley for my wedding and it was great! The driver was punctual and my contact at Gray Line was extremely communicative. The wedding guests loved this service - I would highly recommend.

Angela-Thanks for leaving a review. We loved having you and weddings are one of our favorite charters. Love is in the air!! Congratulations!!
Gray Line Trolley is operating again with new procedures to deal with COVID. Some seats are blocked off so that people can distance on the trolley. So you get to take a tour with less people! Masks are also required to be worn. They are offering a 90 minutes tour of downtown and a ghost tour. The hop on hop off is not being offered right now. I opted for the haunted history and ghost tour. I liked that the tour was full of humor along with the tales. We went to various parts of downtown and to the Grove Park Inn. We learned some history as well as the stories along the tour. It was a fun night. The pick up and drop off location was near Pack's Tavern. They let us on early as it was so cold outside.

"UNCLE TED" was an amazing driver and host. Loved it so much! I had to pee so bad but didn't want to hop off and miss any of his stories.
Alisa-So glad you had a lovely tour with Uncle Ted!
While visiting Asheville, my husband and I decided to take a Gray Line Trolley tour and it turned out to be better than expected. Our driver, "Uncle" Ted, was informed, funny and could tell a great story! The tour is hop on hop off so you could visit areas and catch a later trolley to take you to the next stop. Highly recommend.

These Are the Prettiest Kitchen Cabinet Designs We've Ever Seen
Posted: May 7, 2024 | Last updated: May 7, 2024
When you're designing a kitchen, it's likely the cabinets will set the tone for the entire style of your space. In this gallery of our favorite classic kitchen designs, you'll find everything you need to cook up the kitchen of your dreams, starting with photographs that incorporate simple kitchen cabinet design, modern kitchen cabinet ideas, and every gorgeous cabinet style in between.
One thing to keep in mind when designing cabinets for a kitchen is how the space will echo the overall architectural design of your home. If you live in a traditional historic residence, a white timeless kitchen design might feel age appropriate and fresh all at once. Cabinets coated in an energizing paint color could feel at right in a number of home styles, from cottages to city apartments. Other important considerations when choosing kitchen cabinets: uppers versus lowers, deep drawers versus swinging doors, natural wood versus painted. Kitchen cabinet ideas for storage, like cabinets that reach the ceiling to utilize vertical space, might be a mix of solid doors versus glass-front ones to display prized collections and pretty dishware.
To inspire your kitchen materials selection for a renovation or a new build, we rounded up these 60 brilliant kitchen cabinet ideas, pulled from our extensive VERANDA house tour archives . Scroll through to discover smart kitchen island inspiration , countertops, and kitchen backsplash ideas to elevate your kitchen to luxury status.
White Oak Cabinets
White oak cabinetry, plaster-finished walls, and earthy ceramic lamps ( Gregorius Pineo ) radiate organic beauty in designer Jane Schwab's light-as-air Charlotte penthouse . Tall doors, some topped with transoms designed by the architects with delicate scrolled muntins, create height and light without heaviness. This same application is seen elsewhere throughout the residence. Chair fabric, Fabricut
French Gray Cabinets
Pretty cabinets, painted French Gray by Farrow & Ball (with walls coated in the same shade), wrap this eat-in kitchen in a calming hue. Custom slipcovers ( The Lamp Shoppe ) crafted from French linen tea towels dress up metal lighting pendants in the kitchen of this Dallas house . Counter seating, Janus et Cie . Apple artwork, Enzo Mari for Danese Milano . Cow illustration, Hugo Guinness
Linen White Cabinets with Burgundy Interiors
In Hartford, Connecticut, interior designer Kristen McCory 's clients presented her with a rosy proposition: Use a deep burgundy Lacanche range and hood as a starting point and then don't hold back.
"It was a chance to do something completely different," says McCory, who repeated the rich shade inside the glass cabinets flanking the sink (and on floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in an adjacent butler's pantry). But like all satisfying spice, the beauty is in the balance. Pegasus marble countertops, linen white cabinetry paint, and black accents temper the red.
Green Cabinets
The traditional butler’s pantry in this 1920s Tudor in Houston designed by Charlotte Moss is painted Dartsmouth Green (Benjamin Moore) with classic satin nickel hardware. Glass-front upper cabinets display glassware and silver pieces. This smaller space in a home is an ideal place to experiment with color and pattern.
Antique-Inspired Cabinets
In this 1920s New Jersey estate designed by Steven Gambrel , the profiles of the cabinetry and moldings echo those of adjoining rooms, as do the kitchen's dark wood floors. “Not long ago you’d walk into a kitchen and it wouldn’t speak to the rest of the house,” says Gambrel. “I like to make kitchens equally complex and layered.”
He added dramatic details such as a gunmetal-and-brass hood, a veneered table, and textured shades to the space. The golden leather cantilever seating ( York Street Studio ) juxtaposes tonal gray millwork. The island countertop is crafted of indigo green marble. Range, BlueStar
Tree Bark-Embellished Cabinets
To help establish a defining sense of place in this Mississippi hunting lodge , designer Richard Keith Langham left room for whimsy, which shows up in details like the bark panels in cabinet doors. The kitchen’s wrought-iron chandelier ( Currey & Company ) lights a maple-topped island and suede swivel counter stools ( Louis J. Solomon ).
Open Shelving with White Paneled Cabinets
A treasured collection of Wedgwood plates crowns open kitchen shelving in Mia Reay's Jacobean castle that was designed by George Webster in the early 19th century . In this all white kitchen, save the graphic checkered floor tiles that are Victorian, lower cabinet fronts with a vertical paneling detail, simple white square backsplash tile, a painted wood table, and white wicker seating provide plenty of textural diversity.
Bright Blue Paneled Cabinets
Gil Schafer and the late Suzanne Rheinstein channeled the blue of the nearby sea in the paneled cabinets of the casual kitchen of this Newport Beach home .
White Cabinets with Gold Hardware
Statuario marble clads kitchen walls in earthen opulence, as a large white island and cabinets with gold hardware provide a clean palette for pops of blue and yellow. Upper cabinets reach the ceiling, providing maximum vertical storage. The adjoining breakfast room features hand-painted floor tiles inspired by the bar at Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy, seen here in the foreground. The formal cook space matches the grandeur of this Atlanta estate .
Neutral Cabinets
Portuguese tiles form a kitchen backsplash mural akin to classical artwork in this 1920s Tudor in Houston designed by Charlotte Moss . Upper and lower cabinets in a calming neutral leave room for the show-stopping tilework.
No Upper Cabinets
The absence of upper cabinets provides the perfect spot for Kenneth Noland’s Mexican Camino to bathe the kitchen in serene color. This kitchen space is open to the great room, clad in simple bleached walnut planks, as the rest of the Michael S. Smith-designed Los Angeles home . Range, Wolf . Pendant fixtures, Philippe Anthonioz
Under-Island Cabinets
In this seven-story Beaux Arts townhouse in New York , the stone-clad kitchen ( Christopher Peacock ) features a mix of dolomite, arabescato, and sivec surfaces. Under-island cabinets, as well as upper and lower cabinets in the same style, make for plenty of storage. Pendants, Carrier and Company for Visual Comfort & Co.
Seafoam Island
The owners’ Australian shepherd, Bear, lounges on the kitchen’s wide plank flooring, smoothed over from centuries of use, in this historic Charleston residence . A lantern from Charleston’s Urban Electric Co. in sunny yellow hangs above the seafoam-hued island, anchoring the kitchen in unexpected color. Cushion fabric, Perennials . Painting, Margaret Kennedy.
Salvaged Cabinets
MORE Design + Build was the contractor for the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas , and with co-founder Kurt Bielawski, was tasked with redesigning its kitchen.
“The house itself is an older home for Dallas, so the kitchen needed to feel like it could have gone to the same party, so to speak,” Bielawski says. “I love to cook, I love traveling Europe, and I like a casual yet elegant lifestyle and aesthetic, all of which led me to create this feel that it's an old space where we salvaged the floor and cabinetry and then had to create a new kitchen from there.” With the oversize island, the party is likely to gather around time and again.
Bleached Oak Cabinetry
Geometric stained oak floors and bleached oak cabinetry bring warmth to the kitchen’s marble countertops and plaster walls. The backsplash and countertop’s wispy veining (Calacatta Lasa gold marble) and custom cube flooring design bring movement to the kitchen in this Palm Beach estate by Mary McDonald . Stools, Holly Hunt
Lacquered Onyx Cabinets
In this Connecticut butler's pantry, the black-and-white marble flooring sets a glamorous tone, echoed in lacquered onyx paint on the home's original woodwork and newly milled appliance fronts—too many coats to count, notes designer Sarah Blank .
"There are no shortcuts with high-gloss paint, so it took about six weeks," she says. "But it was worth it—the black is so rich."
Taupe Cabinets with Green Island
A custom oak-topped island, leafy Italian tiles, and a subtle taupe scheme bring serene balance to the kitchen. The minimalist mood in the kitchen is a visual respite from the riotous pattern and color found throughout this English country home .
Vented Cabinets
A pretty and functional cabinet door feature, vents provide airflow as well as subtle pattern in this Timothy Whealon-designed butler's pantry. The countertops are a refined Calacatta Oro ( Marmi Natural Stone ). The backsplash tiles were handmade in Morocco. Slender library lights ( Ann-Morris ) illuminate the utilitarian workspace. Artwork, Donald Baechler . Paint, Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore
Celadon Cabinets with a Painted Island
In this Nantucket cottage 's custom Plain English kitchen, light celadon cabinets are topped with rustic wood counters. Pearly Moroccan wall tiles, similar in color to the cabinetry, are laid to the ceiling without grout to give the walls more rhythm. A slate backsplash contrasts the warm white. The work table base is painted a pretty green and looks like a piece of furniture. Pendant lighting, Hector Finch
Light Gray Cabinets
In the kitchen of this 1926 Buckhead residence , a French bistro-inspired brass hood from François & Co.’s new line shines against existing gray tilework and cabinets in a similar hue. A mix of drawers in various sizes make up lower cabinets, while glass-front doors above show off pretty tableware. Lighting, Visual Comfort & Co. . Stools, Bradley
Bleached Wood Cabinets with a Contrasting Island
Sleek bleached wood cabinetry and slab-front drawers from Christopher Peacock’s Montauk collection are paired with an island and wet bar cabinetry stained slate blue for contrast. Earthy Dekton Onirika in Morpheus Velvet design from Cosentino repeats on counters, backsplash, and vent hood with a shagreen leather-inspired limestone tile cloaking the walls of the kitchen in the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach .
Creamy White Cabinets
Butcher-block counters, a stainless steel sink ( Franke ), and a creamy white cabinet finish build charming practicality into the butler’s pantry in this Maine summer house . Painted wood pulls blend in for a seamless look.
Burgundy Cabinets
The deep burgundy in this butler's pantry by interior designer Kristen McCory was inspired by a Lacanche range and hood in the adjacent kitchen. The floral settee print takes a queue from the rich floor-to-ceiling cabinetry that's lined with pleated white fabric to conceal less attractive items stored behind.
Masculine Cabinets
For her redesign of a historic Colonial Williamsburg home , designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas wanted the rooms to flow together seamlessly. Hillegas envisioned the kitchen more as a handsome, masculine scullery to complement the neighboring rustic dining room, so she painted the classic Shaker cabinets a blue-gray and added brass cabinetry pulls ( Modern Matter )
Blue Cabinets with Oak Island
Designer David Kleinberg kept the kitchen design of this Connecticut lake cabin light and airy with open shelving in front of a glazed tile backsplash in place of open cabinets, all positioned above blue cabinetry and a large oak island.
Dramatic Red Cabinets
Ravishing red cabinetry packs a powerful punch in the kitchen of this glamorous London apartment by Philip Vergeylen . Decorative artist Henry van der Vijver refreshed the original kitchen floors by sanding and staining them in a series of circles and squares that elevate the dramatic cabinets.
Mural Cabinets
In his Manhattan apartment , decorator Garrow Kedigian transform the oddly shaped kitchen into a chic bar, using a mural wallpaper ( Christian Lacroix ) to tie together the cabinetry and curved walls.
Custom Carved Oak Cabinets
In his Birmingham cottage , architect Paul Bates was inspired by woodwork in David Adler’s Clow house in Chicago to design the rectangular carvings in this low, white oak cabinetry accented with brass hardware.
Porcelain-Front Cabinets
Daring porcelain-front cabinetry with brass and steel strapping in this kitchen asserts theatrical elegance in this Naples, Florida retreat . The couture-like detailing mirrors the metal trimming on the La Cornue range.
Dark-Stained Cabinets
In the kitchen of this Napa, California, home designed by Dan Fink , cerused white oak cabinetry, Brazilian soapstone counters, and bronze hardware ( Rocky Mountain Hardware ) lend warmth to the clean, modern lines.
Shirred-Fabric Cabinets
Shirred-fabric door panels lining the cabinets add textural interest to the kitchen in Noel Pittman's 1920s Spanish Colonial home in Los Angeles.
Handleless Cabinets
In this mid-century modern kitchen renovated by architect Ken Pursley , sleek cabinets lack hardware in true handleless fashion. A thin, plated-steel prep counter extends off the sink to face the den.
Painted and Stained Cabinets
This Bronxville, New York, kitchen designed by Carrier and Company features two different cabinetry finished—stained and painted. The kitchen backsplash is fashioned out of glazed terra-cotta tile ( Ann Sacks ).
For 2023, the color green is certainly trending, especially in the kitchen . In this Los Angeles kitchen designed by Fran Keenan , the cabinets and walls are painted Castle Grey by Farrow & Ball .
Monochromatic Cabinets
In this coastal Maine home designed by architect Gil Schafer , the kitchen cabinetry and custom metal hood are painted Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore to make the small kitchen seem larger.
Ebonized Cabinets
In this "back kitchen" at a Dallas home designed by Meredith McBrearty , ebonized cabinetry and bronze hardware infuse the space with modern style.
This galley kitchen in Birmingham, Alabama , designed by architect Paul Bates and designer Melanie Pounds , lives larger than it looks, thanks to a smart layout and light natural materials in the white oak cabinetry and a Colorado gold marble island.
Glossy Black Cabinets
At his home in San Antonio, Texas, designer Todd Romano complemented custom Talavera tiles are arranged in a graphic chevron pattern with glossy ebony cabinetry ( Black, Fine Paints of Europe ).
Dark Island Cabinets
At this cheerful Naples, Florida, home designed by Summer Thornton , a dark-stained island grounds the airy space with sophistication. Behind a Lacanche range, a glass pane protects a hand-painted tropical wallpaper backsplash ( de Gournay ).
Midcentury-Inspired Cabinets
At this Lake Toxaway, North Carolina, retreat, designer Cliff Fong commissioned local craftsmen to create cabinetry in the spirit of midcentury woodworker George Nakashima . A custom-colored center island is fitted with Juno limestone counters, which also forms the backsplash.
Chippendale Cabinets
In designer Caroline Gidiere's Mountain Brook, Alabama, home , antique glass and Chippendale fretwork give the built-in bar cabinetry beautiful historic character. Stained mahogany cabinetry is framed in fiery orange trim (Lava by Porter’s Paints ) and gold leaf ceiling paper ( Phillip Jeffries ).
Cabinet Panels for Appliances
In this South Carolina kitchen , architect Peter Block and designer Beth Webb clad the counter-depth refrigerator and freezer in the same rift-cut white oak panels as the cabinetry to create a more seamless look, which is all the more important in a small kitchen.
Metal Strapping on Cabinets
At this Palm Beach home designed by Susan Zises Green, the fully equipped kitchen by Officine Gullo —including cabinetry and such appliances as a pizza oven—has a vintage European feel.
Seamless Cabinets
Designer Tammy Connor connected the kitchen and adjacent family room of this New York City apartment by lacquering the cabinets of the former and walls of the latter in the same rich ocean shade. For a similar paint color, try Benjamin Moore’s Slate Teal in a pearl finish. The kitchen stools from Soane Britain are covered in a Jerry Pair fabric. Pendant lighting from Balsamo lights up a Lacanche range.
Countertop Cabinets
In her beautiful Connecticut kitchen , Waterworks cofounder and author Barbara Sallick installed one set of glass-front cabinets that sit on the counter, which creates the look and feel of a butler's pantry in the kitchen.
Organized Cabinet Drawers
The drawers in Waterworks cofounder and author Barbara Sallick's kitchen are lined with dividers on the diagonal (to accommodate larger items) that keep kitchen and prep tools organized and at the ready.
Drawer Cabinets
The serene foundation for this white kitchen in a Naples, Florida, retreat designed by Celerie Kemble is its simple, unadorned cabinetry, which features drawer panels with no visible hardware. Dark-stained beams and interlocking white oak floor tiles from Jamie Beckwith add just a hint of rustic warmth.
In this Montana kitchen designed by Palmer Weiss , a bank of drawers in place of lower cabinetry provides ample storage space that's much easier to access and organize. Silicon bronze brushed pulls, Rocky Mountain Hardware . Dual fuel range, Wolf . Cabinetry and ebony finish, Provincial Store Fixtures
Mixed-Finish Cabinets
The kitchen in this Connecticut house designed by Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey is luxe in every sense of the word, from the marble walls and Lacanche range to the oil portraits, brass details, and mohair-upholsted counter stools (by Holly Hunt for Bradlee USA ).
The double islands, which feature a dark wood finish that helps them stand out from the white perimeter cabinets, make entertaining a breeze (one is outfitted with an ice machine, sink, and beverage drawer, making it easy to stand in as a bar). A pair of corner cabinets fitted with metal mesh provides vertical storage and echoes the other brass elements throughout the space.
Mirrored Cabinets
Soft, smoky tones lend a high-fashion, sophisticated touch to the alluring kitchen of this 18th-century flat in Paris . The upper cabinets feature mirrored eglomise facings and “almost look like venetian blinds,” notes decorator Jean-Louis Deniot . The lower cabinetry paint color is Midnight Oil by Benjamin Moore .
Simple Shaker Cabinets
It's hard to deny the timeless appeal of classic, Shaker-style cabinetry. Simple in its construction yet refined in its precision, a Shaker cabinet works with a wide array of achitectural and decorative styles. Today cohost Jenna Bush Hager overhauled the midcentury kitchen in her spirited Long Island cottage with pastel blue cabinetry ( Wedgewood Gray by Benjamin Moore ) that pops against a fireclay apron-front sink ( Rohl ) and glazed wall tiles ( Waterworks ).
Shaker Cabinets with a Twist
The kitchen in designer Philip Mitchell's Nova Scotia home is a study in timeless design, starting with the cabinetry, which features a mix of glass-front panel doors on the uppers and Shaker-style doors with a bevel on the lowers. Stacks of drawers with classic brass bin pulls offer variety in storage.
The banquette seating is crafted of tufted leather and resilient acrylic fabric (both by Ralph Lauren ); and an ikat pendant shade (custom, The Urban Electric Co. ) is a brilliant foil for the overhead lighting (bulkhead cage lights, Cape Cod Lanterns ).
Contemporary Cabinets
In this Paris apartment designed by Raphaël Le Berre and Thomas Vevaud , the kitchen feels more like a gallery space than a cook space. That clean, contemporary feel begins with the cabinets, which are crafted of black melamine wood and designed with a full overlay, meaning only doors and no cabinet frame are visibile.
The blown-glass Lustre globes were made in the 1950s and purchased at auction from Piasa. The counters are Zimbabwe granite. “Tractor” stools, BassamFellows
Locker-Style Cabinets
Floor-to-ceiling "locker" cabinets along one wall of this Paris kitchen designed by Raphaël Le Berre and Thomas Vevaud maximize storage space.
Vintage-Inspired Cabinets
In this Alabama kitchen, designer Mark D. Sikes selected a charming powder blue paint color ( Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray ) to unify a mix of existing raised-panel cabinet doors and new island, range hood, and open shelves designed by architect James B. Laughlin. The island stools by Hickory Chair are covered in a botanical Carolina Irving fabric. The bistro chairs are from Ballard Designs . The wallcovering is by William Morris .
Metal Grate Cabinets
At this Montana mountain house designed by Palmer Weiss, cabinetry faced in brass diamond-patterned grilles and espagnolette references agrarian metalwork. Wine refrigerator, Sub-Zero
Rustic Cabinets
In Colette van den Thillart's Canadian cabin, English country cottage-style cabinetry Smallbone of Devizes reinforces the rustic look. A trip to Denmark inspired the kitchen island's marbleized design. The paneled and log walls are painted in a custom Benjamin Moore paint.
Skirted Cabinets
Wire-brushed French oak cabinetry, oiled soapstone counters, and suspended shelving with brass detailing bring charming utility to this Atlanta home’s scullery, designed by Amy Morris and D. Stanley Dixon . Under-sink storage is concealed with a table skirt. Custom marble-top worktable, BD Jeffries
Rich Berry-Hued Cabinets
At this 1850 farmhouse, designer Richard Keith Langham used luscious berry cabinetry to add a layer of richness and depth to the combined breakfast room and kitchen. The cabinetry paint color is Raisin Torte by Benjamin Moore . Backsplash tile by Ann Sacks draws attention to the polished stove from Ilve . The tole pendants are from Paul Ferrante .
French Farmhouse Cabinets
In this Provence farmhouse kitchen, designer Susan Bednar Long warmed up the white walls, painted Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball , with a wooden island and farm table, limestone flooring, and a large collection of copper pots. The cabinetry, which features a mix of clear glass-front cabinets, open shelving, and raised-panel cabinets, are painted Light Blue by Farrow & Ball .

The History of Little Havana
Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood is legendary. An extensive, rich history, vibrant, local art, delectable, authentic dishes, and lively, welcoming residents make this Cuban enclave a Caribbean dream. But how exactly did Little Havana become one of Miami’s most emblematic districts and a staple in Cuban-American culture? Let’s take a look at how Little Havana became the icon that it is today.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Cuba was enthralled in a revolutionary war. Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries fought against the military dictatorship of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. During this period, the island nation was caught in between ruthless violence, and a huge amount of Cubans fled to Florida – mainly Miami – to escape the national mayhem. Due to its proximity to the island, the majority of Cubans settled in Downtown Miami especially, and at the time, the U.S. government was determined to help the displaced refugees with funding, social services, and political asylum.
As the Cubans transitioned into American culture and way of life, the majority of them placed roots around the Freedom Tower, known at the time as the Miami News Tower. (During this period, the U.S. government had turned the building into the Cuban Assistance Center.) In time, Cubans branched out deeper into Miami, specifically west Miami, which soon began to be called La pequeña Habana, or Little Havana in Spanish.
Before Little Havana was known as such, the neighborhood was home to a large Jewish population. These residents ultimately moved farther northwest into the Miami-Dade county. This movement gave way for Cuban immigrants to come into the area in larger numbers, creating a cascading effect for additional Cubans to move in. The displaced Cubans sought a new home that was pedestrian-friendly; downtown Miami and its adjacent neighborhoods offered a concentrated infrastructure with churches, hospitals, and entertainment venues. Furthermore, during this period, this city sector offered affordable real estate that facilitated the Cuban immigrants’ settlements. Many took residence along Flagler street, opening businesses and establishing their new homes – giving way to the neighborhood’s most famed road: Calle Ocho.
Eventually, Little Havana became the “it” place for newly arriving Cubans. According to statistics, as much as 40% of all Cuban immigrants in the country moved to Miami due to its climate, cultural environments, and physical proximity to friends and family – synonymous qualities between South Florida and Cuba. Today, Little Havana has become a conglomerate of various Latin American communities. Immigrants from the Caribbean, Central America, and South America have turned Little Havana into their home, causing a mixing pot effect in the historic neighborhood. And even with all the demographical changes, and looming gentrifying forces, Little Havana’s Cuban legacy shines on as brilliantly as it did in the past.
