Venice City Pass

If you’re currently planning your trip to Venice and asking yourself what’s the best Venice city pass for your needs, then you’re in the right place!

With this guide we’ll be looking at the different city passes, their costs and what’s included in each pass so you can make the most of your time in Venice.

What is a Venice City Pass?

The Venice City Pass is a tourist card that gives you access to the best museums of the city and/or unlimited public transport rides .

ferrovia transport venice

To take advantage of the best things to do in Venice you’ll find that the visitor’s pass is the best investment you can do if you want to experience this city to the max.

No matter whether it’s to make the most of its cultural and historical offer or simply use public transport to navigate the city and nearby islands.

But which pass is the best pass for you? Let me help you!

For a start, ask yourself two questions to understand if these passes might be right for you or you should explore other options:

  • Am I interested/do I have the time to visit more than 3 museums? Write a list of the attractions you really want to visit , then their entrance ticket prices and compare the city pass offer with the total you would spend to visit your chosen museums.
  • Do I need to use public transport to move around multiple times every day or I rather explore the city on foot?

You can purchase your museums and transportation Venice city passes from the Venezia Unica website or from Venezia Unica ticket points in Venice.

If you purchase your city pass online, you’ll receive a voucher via email with a booking code (PNR). You can use the voucher straight away to get access to the city’s attractions and museums.

To use public transport, once in Venice, you’ll have to use the booking code to collect the travel tickets from ACTV ticket machines or from any ACTV and Venezia Unica retail points (full list here ).

IMPORTANT: if you purchase your city pass ONLINE and 30 DAYS BEFORE the date of use, you’ll have access to discounted rates.

Is the Venice City Pass worth it?

The Venice city pass is worth it, as long as you study beforehands the right city pass for you and your travel plans.

See below a couple of advantages that offers the city pass:

  • The Venice city pass allows you to save up to 20% on the services included. If you’re serious and really mean to visit all the attractions included in the pass, you can save a lot.
  • There are discounted rates for junior travellers (between the age of 6 and 29), families (at least 2 adults and 1 child) and senior travellers (over 65).
  • Extra benefits and discounts in selected city’s businesses. For example, glass blowing demonstrations in Murano and their glass artworks you can buy, paintings from local art galleries, Venetian masks, Illy coffee and ice cream from Grom and much, much more.

How much time do you need in Venice?

You need ideally 3 days in Venice . I believe, that with 3 days you can easily cover Venice’s most popular attractions, have a bit of time to enjoy the city at a slower pace and explore some of its less touristy sights.

The ACTV transport passes are ideal for travellers that are planning to use more than a couple of times the following means of transport:

St. Mark’s City Pass

The San Marco City Pass is the best city pass if you have 2 or 3 days to spend in Venice and your priority is to visit the main attractions based in St. Mark’s Square.

  • Doge’s Palace and the other 3 St. Mark’s Square Museums;
  • 3 Chorus Churches: Santa Maria del Giglio, Sacred Art Museum, Santo Stefano and Santa Maria Formosa;

At this point, you should have a clear idea of all the Venice city passes available.

Before you purchase a city pass, take time to understand which Venice attractions you’re interested in visiting and available time to make the most of your pass.

If you’re a first time visitor I’d personally recommend the St. Mark’s Square Museums pass. Then to purchase a skip-the-line ticket to visit St. Mark’s Basilica separately, or, alternatively, the St. Mark’s Campanile ticket to help you save time.

Also, I highly suggest that you check both the ACTV vaporetto and Alilaguna lines and see what’s the most convenient pass for your particular itinerary (remember that Alilaguna includes transport from/to the airport!).

In contrast, the MUVE Friend Card gives you unlimited access to the city’s twelve museums over twelve months.

The Venice Museum Pass costs €36 for adults, and the MUVE Friend Card costs €45 for adults. You can look at the current pricing for the  Venice Museum Pass  and the  MUVE Friend Card  here.

  • Attractions : You can visit all twelve of the city’s major museums included in both passes. • You’ll need to purchase separate entry tickets if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.
  • Other significant landmarks and attractions that you might want to see in Venice aren’t included in this pass. Also, this pass doesn’t have a Vaporetto transportation pass.

How to Purchase and Use It

You can purchase the Venice Museum Pass or the MUVE Friend Card online.

A .pdf of your tickets will be delivered to you digitally, and you can either print it out or keep it on your phone.

When you visit a participating museum, have them scan the barcode listed on the ticket, and you’re good to go!

Why choose the Venice Museum Pass?

The Venice Museum Pass is worth it if all you want to do is visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums.

You have twelve world-class museums to choose from and six full months in which to see them all.

It’s also more straightforward than the Venice Unica Pass since it doesn’t include any additional add-ons you need to worry about expiring if a specific date was selected.

Why choose the MUVE Friend Card?

The MUVE Friend Card is perfect if you live nearby and want the option to go back to the twelve museums within the Musei Civici di Venezia system.

You have one year to go back to any museums as often as you’d like.

  • Unless otherwise stated for a particular add-on, you don’t need to make a reservation with any of the museums in advance before you visit; you can just show up and activate your pass.
  • Since thus Venice Card for visitors is valid for 24 months, if you come back to Venice within 2 years of your purchase date, you can still use your discount card’s benefits.
  • You can really mix and match different offerings to make the pass best fit your interests.
  • You can purchase several tickets for the Vaporetto at a discounted rate at once.
  • Although most museums don’t require a reservation and can be used at any time, any ticket you buy with a set date and time can not be changed after purchase. So if you’re schedule changes, you’re unfortunately locked into the commitment and can’t change it.
  • If your trip to Venice is only a few days and you don’t live close enough to the city to visit again, you might not have the opportunity to see everything included.
  • You’ll need to purchase a separate ticket if there are museums you want to visit that aren’t included in this pass.

To purchase the Venice Unica Pass, you need to  head to their website  and follow the prompts to create a tourist travel card for each person.

Next, you’ll select which of their base-level “Best Deals” tickets you want to start with.

Then, scroll through the additional add-ons and select which card you want to add it to.

Once you’re done, you’ll check out online, save your voucher to your phone, and/or print it out, so you have it with you when you arrive in Venice.

Since each pass is different, follow the directions listed on the voucher on how to access and use the pass you’ve purchased.

Why choose the Venice Unica Pass?

If you’re looking for more flexibility than the Venice Museum Pass, then the Venice Unica Pass is what you want to go with.

One of the base-level passes includes every museum included in the Venice Museum Pass and other admissions.

Or, if all twelve museums are overwhelming, you can choose a base-level pass that only consists of the four significant museums within Piazza San Marco for less, which still includes extra benefits and the option for add-ons.

The Venice Pass costs $97.38 for adults (ages 30+), $84.95 for youths (ages 6 – 29), and $34.19 for children (ages 2 – 5).

  • Attractions : The Venice Pass includes skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, a downloadable audio walking tour called Discover Venice: Past and Present, an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.
  • Validity : When you purchase The Venice Pass, you will schedule each of your included attractions at the time of booking. Your excursion is available on the date and time you selected in advance.
  • Suitability : This pass is an excellent choice if you’re interested in accessing all of Venice’s most famous attractions.
  • With a streamlined selection of excursions, you’ll be able to use all of the activities on your pass.
  • Since you can choose the exact dates you want to use for each of the included attractions, you can spread your experiences out over the whole amount of time you’re visiting Venice instead of squeezing everything into 24 or 48 hours.
  • Once you buy The Venice Pass, Tiqets sends you a 10% discount code to use for your next purchase!
  • When you’re buying this Venice pass, you have to select all of your entrance times at the time of purchase.
  • Since your tickets are tied to the specific dates and times you chose at the time of booking, rescheduling any part of your ticket is not allowed after you make your purchase.

To purchase The Venice Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.”

Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose The Venice Pass?

This streamlined pass is an excellent choice if you’re interested in experiencing only the most famous landmarks in Venice–St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and enjoying a gondola ride.

travel pass venice

Like the Venice Pass, the Venice Discovery Pass allows visitors to choose from a curated list of the best things to see and do in Venice.

However, it offers more experiences and landmarks than the more consolidated Venice Pass.

The Venice Discovery Pass has different pricing based on your age and how many days you want the pass to be active. You can view the current pricing breakdown on their website here.

  • Attractions : The Venice Discovery Pass includes a fast-track entrance to Doge’s Palace, admission into 15 different Catholic landmarks throughout the city, an Alilaguna Boat Transfer from the city center to the airport, and an audio tour led by a local historian called Welcome to Venice. It also includes 24-, 48-, or 72-hour unlimited access to Venice’s public water transportation system, the Vaporetto.
  • Validity : When you purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, you will schedule each of your included attractions at the time of booking. Your excursion is available on the date you selected in advance. However, your Venetian Churches Chorus Pass is valid for 1 year after its first use.
  • Suitability : This pass is a great choice if you’re interested in visiting Venice’s many historic churches or want to utilize an airport transfer or the Vaporetto system without worrying about additional bookings.
  • If you’re interested in visiting historic Catholic churches in Venice, this pass includes entry to fifteen churches.
  • No need to schedule an additional airport transfer and Vaporetto passes to get you into and around Venice–this pass does it for you.
  • The only major landmark the Venice Discovery Pass includes is Doge’s Palace, so you’ll still need to purchase entry to other museums you want to see.

To purchase the Venice Discovery Pass, head to Tiqets and select “Book Now.” Once you select the number of adult, youth, and children tickets you’ll need, you will work through the prompts to schedule each of the excursions your pass includes.

Why choose the Venice Discovery Pass?

If you’re looking for a Venice pass that combines an airport transfer with a Vaporetto pass, then this is a great choice.

This is an image of the Rialto bridge in Venice, Italy as seen from the water.

The San Marco City Pass is the only one of its kind here on this list of the best Venice city passes! If you’re a history buff who’s passionate about the Republic of Venice, this one is for you.

The San Marco City pass costs $40.80 for adults (ages 30-65), $25.10 for youths (ages 6-29), and $25.10 for seniors (ages 65+).

  • Attractions : The San Marco City Pass includes almost all of the most famous attractions in Piazza di San Marco. With this pass, you can visit Doge’s Palace, the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Marciana National Library, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, and three churches–the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, the Church of Santo Stefano, and the Church of Santa Maria Formosa.
  • Validity : When you purchase the San Marco City Pass, you can enter each included museum or monument one time and it’s valid for two years once activated. However, you must enter the Doge’s Palace on the date and time you select at the time of booking.
  • Suitability : This pass is great for anyone who is interested in only exploring the included museums around Piazza di San Marco.
  • Once you activate the pass with your entry to Doge’s Palace, you can use it for entry into the other included landmarks for two years.
  • Instead of purchasing one of these other Venice city passes with too many offerings for a short Venice itinerary, You’re only paying for the things you really want to do.
  • Although it’s called the San Marco City Pass, entry into the Basilica di San Marco is not included in this pass.
  • Once you purchase the pass, you can’t change your entry date and time for the Doge’s Palace.

To purchase the San Marco City Pass, you’ll need to visit the Civitatis and select the date you’re interested in activating your pass and the number of tickets you’ll need.

Once your pass has been purchased, you can schedule all of your additional activities up until the start time, as long as they have space available.

Why choose the San Marco City Pass?

If you’re interested in really exploring all of the different landmarks, the San Marco City Pass is for you.

You’ll be able to take time to discover the history of Venice inside these museums without paying for other museum entries you won’t have time to use.

Venice Sightseeing Passes Comparison Breakdown

travel pass venice

Which is the best Venice city pass to buy for my trip?

Although each Venice attractions pass shares some similarities, here are my recommendations on which one to buy based on this Venice pass comparison:

The Overall Best Venice City Pass

After reviewing all of the information, and after very happily using the full Venice Museum Pass myself, the Venice Unica Pass is the best Venezia city pass overall, for both visitors and frequent visitors like myself.

It offers everything the Venice Museum Pass offers–and more.

However, what really sells me on the pass is that cardholders receive additional discounts from participating museums and restaurants.

The Best Venice Attractions Pass To Use Multiple Times

If you live near Venice or are planning to spend a lot of time in the city over the course of a year and want the flexibility to visit the Musei Civici di Venezia museums over and over again, then you need the MUVE Friend Card .

Since there are no restrictions on how often you can visit any of the participating museums, you can take your time working through different museums and go back to others that you want to explore further.

Or, if family and friends are coming to visit and you know they’ll want to head into these museums, then the MUVE Friend Card makes the most sense.

The Best City Pass Venice for Major Attractions

If you’re visiting Venice for a limited amount of time and only want to experience the most famous landmarks and attractions, The Venice Pass is the best choice for you.

Although the pass only includes five excursions, it has the Big 3–skip-the-line entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica with access to the Terrace and Pala d’Oro, fast-track admission to Doge’s Palace, and a shared 30-minute gondola ride.

If you’re not interested in wandering through museums and want to hit the biggest sites, this is the best pass for your itinerary.

The Best Pass to Explore San Marco

The San Marco City Pass is the perfect choice if you want to dive deep into the history and museums around Piazza di San Marco.

Although it does not include skip-the-line admission to the Basilica di San Marco, you can access the Doge’s Palace, the Marciana National Library, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Correr Museum–all museums surrounding the Piazza di San Marco.

The Case For A Venice Museum Pass

However, as I said, I’m a very happy Venice Museum Pass user!

When I first moved to the Veneto region, we didn’t know that there were different options for passes–we only saw the Venice Museum Pass available when we purchased individual tickets to visit Palazzo Ducale.

If you’re only going to be in Venice for a short time, so you don’t need the flexibility of multiple admission but want as many options as possible, this is the pass for you.

The Case of a Venice Discovery Pass

The Venice Discovery Pass offers the fewest bucket-list experiences in Venice .

However, if you’re interested in religious tourism and want to visit fifteen different historic Catholic churches in the city, this is the pass for you!

Also, if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of managing an airport transfer or scheduling your Vaporetto pass, the Venice Discovery Pass includes it for you.

travel pass venice

What are some Venice experiences and landmarks not included on these passes?

  • If you’re interested in purchasing one of the Venice city passes for museums, then they do not include a classic Gondola ride. Book a  Grand Canal by Gondola with Commentary  tour to try this wonderful boat trip.
  • Although admission is included for four of the major museums in Piazza San Marco, entry into the Torre dell’Orologio and climbing up the San Marco Campanile are not included in any of these Venice passes.
  • If you want to explore the Doge’s Palace further with a  Secret Itineraries tour , you’re going to need to purchase the experience separately from your ticket to Palazzo Ducale.

The Best Venice Tourist Cards: Wrap-Up

Fortunately, Venice offers a variety of passes that allow tourists to visit the most incredible landmarks and museums in the city while bundling admission.

To ensure that you enjoy the most out of your stay in Venice, consider purchasing one of these Venice city passes!

P eople often ask us whether they should buy Venice transportation passes or city passes. The answer, as with so many things, is "It depends." Here are some things to consider:

Venice's public water buses charge outrageous prices for single tickets: The single-ticket tourist fare is a staggering €9,50, which is six times what local residents pay to ride the vaporetto. (It's also several times what you'd pay for a transit ride in most other cities.) By purchasing a transportation pass, you'll begin saving money after you've taken two or three rides per day.

At the same time, you may not need to ride water buses regularly during your visit. Venice's historic center is compact, and walking is often the fastest way to get from one point to another.

During high season (April through October), at holiday times, and on busy weekends, the boats may simply be too crowded to enjoy. When crowded, the vaporetti are also impractical for getting to and from your hotel if you're traveling with more than minimal luggage. (See Picking the Right Hotel Location to avoid frustration and needless expense.)

There are times when water buses are necessary: e.g., to visit the Lido di Venezia or the glassmaking island of Murano , to take our self-guided Venice Islands Tour by public transportation, or if you're staying on the island of Giudecca, which is across the Giudecca Canal from Venice's historic center.

Finally, no visit to Venice is complete without an evening ride up the Grand Canal on Vaporetto Line 1 , so you should factor that into your plans when deciding whether to spend money on a transportation pass.

Mestre Railroad Station sign

If you do expect to use water buses regularly, here's a guide to choosing the right pass:

"I'm visiting Venice for seven days or less."

For short stays, ACTV (Venice's transit agency) sells ACTV single- and multi-day travel passes that allow unlimited travel on public water and land buses for periods of one, two, three, or seven days at a cost of 25 to 65 euros. The longer the period of validity, the lower the cost per day. You can buy these passes from any ACTV vending machine or ticket booth.

If you have a generous budget, we suggest buying an ACTV travel pass for the duration of your visit. This way, you can hop on and off public water buses whenever you wish, without worrying about the expense.

If you're watching your euros carefully, consider buying a shorter-duration pass and bunching your waterbus trips into the period of validity.

For example, with a two-day pass, you could tour the islands of the Lagoon and visit the Lido on the same day, followed by a visit to another island location (such as Giudecca) on the next day with an evening boat ride up the Grand Canal.

You can buy the ACTV one- to seven-day ticket as part of a Venezia Unica for Tourists "city pass," which may be worth considering if the city pass has other features that interest you.

For slightly more than the basic price, you can buy a Tourist Travel Card with roundtrip transportation into the city from Venice Marco Polo Airport on the No. 5 public "Aerobus ."

If you're between the ages of 6 and 29, you can get substantial discounts on 24-hour to 7-day ACTV travel passes by purchasing a Rolling Venice Card for €6--. (The card also offers discounts on specified museums and attractions.)

See our Venice land buses & tram fares article for a description of the Mestre Daily Pass , a cheap electronic pass that covers ACTV land buses, the People Mover, and Trenitalia regional trains within the Comune di Venezia.

"I'm visiting for longer than seven days" or "I plan to come back in the next few years."

If you're staying for a relatively short time (say, two or three weeks), you can simply buy ACTV travel passes as you need them. For example, if you're in Venice for two weeks, you might buy a seven-day ticket for the first week and a two- or three-day pass toward the end of your trip.

Venezia Unica city pass for Frequent Users

The card is valid for five years, and you can add value whenever you wish--either online or at any ACTV ticket machine.

Alilaguna airport boat

Another option, for longer stays, is to buy a "Rete Unica" monthly commuter pass and have it loaded onto the card. (The commuter passes are sold from day 20 of the preceding month. They're available directly from the ACTV or at many tobacco shops or newsstands.)

Venice Pass for Transportation

Getting around in Venice by vaporetto (Water Bus), water taxi, tram, or going to the various islands in the lagoon can be very expensive. For instance, a typical ticket for the vaporetto is 9.50 euro and lasts 75 minutes. This means that if you were to take the vaporetto from the train station to St. Mark’s Square, you would have to buy another ticket to take another one to another destination for an additional 9.50 euro.

save time with a water taxi

The water taxi from the airport to the historic center is an invigorating and exciting way to enter the city, but will also cost you over 100 euro.

Buying the various passes available for transportation is a good idea and will make your life much easier as well as save you some money.

There are different passes available that will suit your needs, so take a look below to find the right one for your length of time in Venice as well as your transportation needs.

ACTV Public transport card

What you get with a 1, 2, or 3 day pass:

  • Unlimited use of the public transportation services (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Unlimited use of the water-buses and buses in Lido, the lagoon islands, Mestre and Marghera
  • Unlimited use of train R and RV in the municipality of Venice (only if option 1 day Ticket + Trenitalia is selected)

N.B. I don’t recommend getting the 75 minute pass since it is exactly the same as the single trip ticket you can buy at any ticket machine for less money.

You can buy a pass at any of the vaporetto stops or at the ticket booths in front of the major sites like the train station and St Mark’s Square.

vaporetto ticket booth in front of train station

Water Taxi from Marco Polo Airport to Venice + ACTV 24 – 72-Hour Transport

When you are coming from the airport to get to the historic center, I highly recommend this Venice pass. It is convenient and saves a lot of money.

What the pass includes:

  • Unlimited use of the public transport (ACTV vaporetti and buses) in the city of Venice
  • Water taxi from Venice Airport to city center (shared transfer)
  • Luggage transfer

If you end up going to the beach or casino on the Lido, for instance, you will use the pass both for the vaporetto to get to the island and for the buses on the island to get around easily and quickly.

Alternatively, if you decide to head to Mestre for any reason, you can take one of the trams with the pass at no extra charge.

Chorus Pass

The Chorus Church Pass in Venice is a fantastic way to explore some of the most stunning churches in the city while saving money. With one pass, visitors can access 18 churches, including famous landmarks such as the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and the Chiesa di San Giacomo di Rialto.

san trovaso, san marco. santa maria formosa

Aside from the cost savings, the Chorus Church Pass also offers other benefits. For instance, it allows visitors to bypass long lines at individual church entrances, as they can simply show their pass to gain entry. Better still, the pass lasts for a year from when you redeem it, meaning visitors can use it to explore the churches at their own pace over multiple days or even weeks.

Additionally, the Chorus Church Pass provides a rich cultural and historical experience, giving visitors the chance to admire exquisite artwork, intricate architecture, and learn about the history of each church, which spans over centuries. Buying a Chorus Church Pass is an excellent investment for anyone who wishes to explore the religious and cultural heritage of Venice while saving money and enjoying a hassle-free experience.

The Chorus Pass includes access to all of these important churches :

1 – Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

One of the largest churches in Venice, the Frari is a must-see for art lovers with its collection of works by Titian, Bellini, and Donatello, among others. Don’t let the austere exterior fool you. The interior is as sumptuous as the exterior is plain.

2 – Church of Santa Maria del Giglio

This church, also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo, features a beautiful Baroque facade and interior with works by artists such as Tiepolo and Piazzetta.

3 – Church of Santo Stefano

A small, charming church in the San Marco district, Santo Stefano houses works by Tintoretto, Veronese, and Palma il Giovane.

4 – Church of Santa Maria Formosa

Built in the 15th century, this church has a unique exterior and features a collection of paintings by artists such as Bellini and Tintoretto.

5 – Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli

This church, often referred to as the “marble church,” boasts a stunning facade entirely covered in white and pink marble, with intricate sculptural details.

6 – Church of San Giovanni Elemosinario

A small but noteworthy church in the San Polo district, San Giovanni Elemosinario features works by Palma il Giovane and the Veronese brothers.

7 – Church of San Polo

Located in the heart of the San Polo district, this church features a striking Gothic facade and houses works by Tintoretto and Palma il Giovane.

8 – Church of San Giacomo dall’Orio

This church, located in the Santa Croce district, is a fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture and houses works by Palma il Giovane and Carpaccio.

9 – Church of San Stae

A grand Baroque church located in the Santa Croce district, San Stae features works by Tiepolo and a unique organ with 5,000 pipes.

10 – Church of Sant’Alvise

This church in the Cannaregio district is known for its striking facade and for housing works by the Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

11 – Basilica of San Pietro di Castello

Once the cathedral of Venice, this basilica features a mix of architectural styles and houses works by artists such as Carpaccio and Tintoretto.

12 – Church of the Santissimo Redentore

A beautiful church located on the island of Giudecca, the Redentore was built as a thanksgiving for the end of the plague and features works by Paolo Veronese.

13 – Church of Santa Maria del Rosario

Also known as the Gesuati, this church in the Dorsoduro district features a grand Baroque facade and interior and houses works by Tiepolo and Tintoretto.

14 – Church of San Sebastiano

Decorated by Veronese with frescoes and canvases, this church is located in the Dorsoduro district and is known for its art collection and unique oval-shaped nave.

15 – Church of San Giobbe

This church in the Cannaregio district features a simple, elegant facade and houses works by Bellini, Titian, and Palma il Giovane.

16 – Church of San Giuseppe di Castello

Located on the island of San Pietro, this church is known for its impressive bell tower and for housing works by the Venetian artist Jacopo Tintoretto.

17 – Church of San Vidal

A small church located near the Accademia Bridge, San Vidal is known for its collection of musical instruments and for hosting classical music concerts.

18 – Church of San Giacomo di Rialto

This church in the San Polo district is believed to be the oldest church in Venice and is known for its simple facade and Byzantine-style interior.

Cost Savings: If you plan to visit several churches during your stay in Venice, the Chorus Venezia pass is a worthwhile investment. Without the pass, each of the listed churches charges €3 (US$3.30) for admission. Purchasing the pass is a good idea, as it allows you to visit at least five churches at a discounted rate. The more churches you visit, the more value the pass provides. You may not have time to see all 18 churches, but you have the option to see as many as you like.

Venice Museum Pass

Venice is a city steeped in history and culture, and its museums offer a fascinating glimpse into its rich past. From art to architecture, there’s something for everyone in the city’s many museums.

use the Venice museum pass to get into museo correr

Visiting the significant museums in Venice is a great way to immerse yourself in the city’s unique history and culture. Whether you’re an art lover , a history buff, or simply curious about this fascinating city, the museums of Venice are sure to leave a lasting impression.

The Venice Museum Pass is a fantastic value. Essentially you get the same experience as the Venezia Unica pass with skip the line entry to the Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Basilica and its museums, and the Museum Correr among others. In addition, you also get full access to all of the 18 participating churches of the Chorus Pass, as well as these other participating museums:

murano glass museum

  • Ca’ Rezzonico
  • Carlo Goldoni’s House
  • Mocenigo Palace
  • Ca’ Pesaro (Modern Art Gallery and Oriental Art Gallery)
  • Glass Museum (Murano)
  • Lace Museum (Burano)
  • Natural History Museum

If you plan to spend 3 days in Venice, then this provides excellent value. However, if you are only there for a day, there won’t be enough time to make this pass worth it.

Although you won’t get free entry into the non civic museums, there are often discounts. For instance, you will save around 40% off the ticket to enter the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

N.B. If you order this online, which I recommend, you will need to exchange the voucher for a physical ticket at one of the tourist information offices around the city.

Here are the spots with opening hours where you can make the exchange:

  • Marco Polo Airport boat departure pier (open 7:45 AM – 12:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office, in front of Giardinetti Reali in San Marco (open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
  • Alilaguna Ticket Office at the railway station (open 8:30 AM – 2:20 PM)
  • Tronchetto InterParking (open 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Wrapping It Up

There are millions of tourists who leave Venice overwhelmed and exhausted, and, yet, they still didn’t scratch the surface of what the city offers. When you have a plan and strategy to visit the city, you get far more out of it.

Those that get passes are the ones who often leave feeling fulfilled and satisfied that they enjoyed the city to its fullest with the time they had.

Be one of those tourists who remembers the trip fondly and not one who wasted time in lines and paid too much for pretty much everything.

To make sure you get the most out of your trip, be sure to read some other helpful articles below written by me, a local to Venice.

A number of these discount cards will really save you money and, above all, a lot of unnecessary waiting times, such as the Venice Pass , Venezia Unica Card and ACTV travel card . However, the disadvantage of this card is, that after your order, you still have to pick up the 'physical card' at one of the (central) collection locations in Venice. Canal in Venice

This Actv card gives you access to the city’s transportation network. Here is what it includes.

Venice Actv transport card pricing

The price structure is easy to understand. It only depends on the number of days you need it . Of course, the longer you plan to use the card, the more it costs. But on the other hand, the price decreases as the number of days increases.

The good news for families with young children is that transportation is free for children under 6 years old . You do not need to buy a card for them.

The Venice transport pass is a traditional type of card. Once you have it, you can use it to travel free of charge on all public transportation services covered by the card (vaporetto boats, buses in Venice, and suburban trains if you choose that option).

Considering a one-way ticket for a vaporetto boat ticket (7,50 €), and the distances to travel in Venice, this card quickly pays for itself . For example:

  • You will have to walk about 3 km from the train and bus stations to St. Mark’s Square, and even more to get to the Castello district, on the east side of the main island.
  • You will need to take a boat to get to the islands of Murano, Burano, and Lido

Modes of transportation included with the Actv card

Here is a list of modes of transport covered by the Venice pass:

  • Access to the vaporetto
  • Access to the Venetian ACTV bus network (transfer to the airport is not covered).
  • Access to R and RV trains around Venice, if this option is chosen at the time of purchase.

Please note: it does not cover transportation to Venice airports (Marco Polo and Treviso), either by bus or by boat (Alilaguna line).

How long is it valid?

This card is valid for the number of days (or rather hours) you choose when you buy it. Time is deducted starting the moment you use it for the first time (the first time you get on a vaporetto, train or bus).

The validity period is counted in hours. This means that if you activate a 2-day pass on Monday at 2pm, it can be used until Wednesday at 1:59pm. This is very practical because there is no need to check if it is cost-effective if you activate it at the end of the day.

Where to get a Venice transport card?

Since it is a printed card, it must be picked up in Venice. The most convenient pick-up points are the « Actv » kiosks found in most vaporetto stations . They can be recognized by the words « Actv » and « Biglietteria ». Simply go to one of these terminals and follow the instructions. You will then just have to scan the QR-code sent to you by email after your purchase to get your pass directly at the machine.

Gondolas on a canal in Venice

Another alternative is to go directly to the Actv office in Piazzale Roma. It is located right next to the bus station and about 500 meters from the Santa Lucia train station. It is open every day from 7am to 7:30pm.

Venice Discovery Pass

This city pass gives you the opportunity to enjoy the rich culture that Venice has to offer, combining access to public transportation with the Actv card detailed above.

Discovery pass pricing

The price depends on 2 factors: the user’s age and the duration of validity , i.e. 24, 48, or 72 hours.

You should consider the Venice pass as a package of several passes, each with its own special features. For example:

  • a ticket for the Doge’s Palace that grants access to other museums in the area
  • an Actv transport card , which provides free and unlimited use of vaporetto boats, ACTV buses, and some trains
  • the Chorus Pass , which grants access to a number of churches, namely the most famous ones.

As mentioned above , the transportation card pays for itself in no time since you’ll need to take a boat to get to some of the islands on the lagoon, yet also to travel long distances.

What is included in the Venice city pass

It covers everything you need for a trip to Venice oriented towards cultural visit s, with access to transportation as well. As you can see, no gondola rides provided!

Here is a list of what the pass includes:

  • Marco-Polo airport transfer (round trip), via the "Alilaguna" boat

A major advantage compared to the Actv card alone: it also covers transfers to and from the Marco Polo airport! This service is available by boat, via the « Alilaguna » line.

This is actually the same coverage as the Actv card , i.e. the number of consecutive hours of unlimited access to public transport. This can be determined at the time of purchase. It is either 24, 48 or 72 hours .

The card’s validity starts being counted the moment you use it for the first time.

Venice lagoon

For the rest:

  • the Chorus Pass is valid for one year, so there is no real limitation there
  • Other tickets dates are to be decided at the time of purchase. These are fast-pass (no line) tickets.

Where to get this city pass?

As it is a package, it can be picked up in installments. But don’t worry, it’s simple and non-binding!

  • The Actv card can be purchased in Venice at the « Actv » kiosks located at most vaporetto stations. We have given more details on this subject earlier in this guide.
  • The Chorus Pass card can be used when you visit a church, by showing the QR-Code obtained at the time of purchase.

As for the other tickets , you will receive everything by email . You will only have to show them when you get there. You will also get the link to download the audio-guide app included in this pass and accessible anywhere and anytime.

Which must-see attractions are included in Venice City Passes?

Depending on which one you choose, you can enjoy either all or only part of the main activities in Venice , from monuments to museums, transportation to gondolas. Here is a summary of the city’s must-sees along with the city passes that include them.

Doge's palace in Venice

Located on St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace is the historic residence of the Doge of Venice . The tour consists of exploring various rooms such as the apartments, a weapons room, etc... But also the prison, as well as the famous Bridge of Sighs that you can walk across. This monument is by far one of the most frequented places in the city , and having a ticket in advance with a city pass or a regular ticket is a must.

The Venice Pass

The Correr Museum

Located on St. Mark's Square, this art museum is one of the most prominent in Venice. It houses many works, including Venetian paintings, sculptures, but also period furniture.

Saint Mark's basilica in Venice

Saint Marc's Basilica

This basilica is one of the beauties of the square that bears the same name. Once inside, you can admire its dome and numerous golden mosaics . Entrance to the building is free but some parts are not free of charge such as the Saint Mark's museum (known for its sculptures of the horses of Saint Mark) and the Pala D'Oro (altarpiece in precious stones), or access to the terrace . The terrace offers a magnificent view of the entire square.

Gondola ride in Venice

Gondola boat ride through the canals

Apart from cultural visits, a gondola ride is a must-do activity when visiting Venice. The concept is to embark on a gondola and navigate along the Grand Canal and other small canals to see the city from a different angle. This activity is extremely popular despite the price .

Vaporetto in Venice

Taking a vaporetto boat

Taking a vaporetto is not necessarily an activity to be done in itself, but it is somewhat atypical and very much representative of Venice. It is the system of boats that cross the Grand Canal and connect it to the lagoon's main islands. It is the most common mode of transportation in Venice, and you will inevitably use it at one point during your stay.

ACTV Venice

This card gives you access to Venice's 15 main churches . The entrance to these churches is not free of charge. Among them: the church of Santa Maria del Giglio, known for its works by Rubens and Tintoretto, the Gesuati church with its 3 beautiful ceiling frescoes, and the Santa Maria del Giglio church.

Conclusion: which Venice Pass is best for my trip?

Before buying one or several city passes for Venice, it’s important to know beforehand if the visits and activities correspond with your interests. Here below is some advice and our opinio n for helping you choose which tourist card to buy when visiting Venice.

For easily enjoying cultural visits

If you plan on visiting Venice mainly for its general atmosphere and cultural attractions (main museums and churches), the Discovery Pass will suit you best.

It is the most comprehensive . It does not include a gondola ride, but if you want to do it, you can book this activity on your own.

In addition to sightseeing, the Discovery Pass gives you access to public transportation , which enables you to move around at your leisure, especially over long distances and to different islands located on the lagoon.

Venice Discovery Pass

The Venice Pass: for combining museums and gondolas!

Are you going to spend a few days in Venice but just want to stick to the main attractions and take nice little strolls around the city to discover it on your own?

If that’ s the case, the Venice Pass is the most relevant. You’ll be able to enjoy the must-see monuments: the Doge’s Palace (and surrounding museums), the fee-based attractions inside St. Mark’s Basilica , a gondola ride , and the mobile apps to discover Venice on your own.

And if you want to do an extra activity (or more), you can always take advantage of the pass’s 10% discount.

The Venice Pass

For transportation only: the Actv card

To get around Venice without worrying about the price of fares and saving yourself the hassle of buying them at the ticket booths, this transportation pass will come in handy. For a city the size of Venice, that requires long distances when traveling to and from the main island, a vaporetto boat is clearly a must .

Since this Venice pass is solely for transportation, you can combine it with a « Venice Digital Pass ».

Venice entry fee in 2024: all you need to know

travel pass venice

In spring 2024 , the City of Venice takes a step forward to combat overtourism and move towards a more sustainable and responsible tourism . From 25 April , in fact, there will be a fee for tourist to enter Venice for a trial period that will last until July, in order to support local tourism and preserve the authenticity of the city and its inhabitants by limiting entry on the "black sticker" days of the year.

Here is all the information you need to organise your trip in the best possible way.

How much does the ticket cost and how to pay

20240213161340venezia-a-pagamento-quanto-costa.jpg

Admission to Venice from 25 April will cost €5 per person per day. The fee is the same for everyone and there are currently no reductions. Each ticket is nominal and valid for the entire day , so if you leave the city centre to re-enter during the day you will not need a new ticket, but you will not need to buy one if you enter the city between 4pm and 8.30am.

To purchase the ticket simply go to the official website of the Municipality of Venice and follow the instructions. Once you have made the payment you will be issued with a voucher with a QR-code to take with you and show in case of controls at one of the eight access points.

Venice oentry fee: who has to pay

20240213162006venezia-a-pagamento.jpg

The dates on which you will have to purchase your ticket

202402131626571.jpg

For this trial period, Venice entry fee is limited only to "black-sticker" days , when the overcrowding is greatest.

Here are the days on which you need to purchase an entrance ticket:

- From April 25th to May 5th .

- The remaining weekends of May , namely 11/12, 18/19, 25/26 May.

- All the weekends in June, except the first one , and therefore: 8/9, 15/16, 22/23, 29/30 June.

- The first two weekends of July , i.e. 6/7, 13/14.

This solution implemented by the municipality of Venice is aimed at preserving the heritage and uniqueness of this city , containing daily tourism and making it more sustainable. Moreover, this measure is also intended to give residents some breathing space, allowing them to enjoy their city.

In these "black-sticker" days, the entrance ticket will make the streets and monuments more enjoyable for everyone, but the smartest way to visit Venice remains the Venice Pass , which allows you to skip the queue at the most important attractions and take advantage of discounts and concessions.

Let us all commit to safeguarding Venice's heritage!

Sarasota School Board candidates field questions at public forum in Venice

Portrait of Steven Walker

All five candidates for two Sarasota School Board seats in Aug. 20's primary election participated in a public forum in Venice on Friday afternoon.

Incumbent District 3 school board member Tom Edwards and challengers Greg Wood and Thomas Babicz sat beside one another while incumbent District 2 school board chairwoman Karen Rose sat beside her challenger, Liz Barker . The five candidates fielded questions from a moderator and audience members during the 90-minute forum.

Voters in Sarasota County elect their candidates district-wide, regardless of where they live, and candidate's districts only indicate where they live. So, voters in both north and south Sarasota County will see each school board candidate on their ballot.

The panel addressed issues ranging from charter schools, the upcoming referendum vote in November, political fights at school board meetings and the candidates' goals for Sarasota County public schools.

Rose and Wood were notably absent from a recent July 11 Tiger Bay candidate forum in north Sarasota County but did participate in Friday's South County Tiger Bay forum. Rose also refused to speak with the Herald-Tribune for a candidate profile.

Sarasota School Board candidates answer questions from the public

In one of her first public candidate forums of the election cycle, Rose was critical of local media's coverage of the school board. When asked about divisive politics in Sarasota's School board, she pointed to outside organizations such as Equality Florida and the SEE Alliance as groups that organize at meetings and give prepared talking points to speakers.

"That chaos isn't being generated by the board," Rose said. "Sarasota is better than this."

Edwards, the other incumbent school board member participating in Friday's forum, disagreed with Rose and said "The memory is short-lived." He said groups such as Moms for Liberty organized in 2020 against mask mandates and critical race theory in schools, which kicked off much of the division seen in the board room now.

"What you have is a public that has been trained that if they come into the boardroom and scream loud enough to the board members, then bills get passed," he said. "So we've trained the public to think that that's how they come through the door and solve their problems, which is wrong."

He also responded to a question about calling himself "woke" and a past social media post where he called all Trump voters Nazis. Edwards said he made the post when he was an "angry, private citizen" but has since shifted to stop posting divisive content, instead wanting to "do something positive for the community."

"I'm in there. I have your backs. I'm listening to both sides of the community. And I'm not embarrassed to be 'woke'," Edwards said.

Another person asked Wood why he chose not to send his children to the district's public schools. Bridget Ziegler, another Sarasota School Board member, also elects not to send her kids to Sarasota public schools, a fact that many activists asked her about during her 2022 re-election.

Wood said he and his wife tried Sarasota's public schools but found his daughter was falling behind in literacy in math despite coming in above grade level.

"That's not okay for my family, and I'm not going to put my kids or anyone else's kids in that situation where they're not getting the best," he said.

Candidates field questions from moderator

Here is what the candidates had to say for each of the moderator's questions.

What is the role of a school board member?

Babicz : To not waste money.

Edwards : To be a voice of reason in a political storm, and create a safe, high-achieving academic environment for all students.

Wood : To oversee the superintendent of schools and the district's budget.

Rose : To ensure the district complies with state law and Florida Department of Education policy.

Barker : To take politics out of the equation and put a parent in.

What is the cause of the politics at school board meetings?

Babicz : Was shocked at my first meeting, it was a total circus. Happy to see democracy at work, but wants to meet with groups advocating for change and see where he can find a middle ground — such as a third bathroom for transgender students.

Edwards : Moms for Liberty came into school board meetings with talking points in 2020. Much of the chaos at board meetings is self-induced with things such as removing Superintendent Brennan Asplen , proposing a resolution to reject Title IX protections for gender identity discrimination , and proposing a Hillsdale-College-tied firm called Vermilion to come and overhaul the district.

Wood : 2+2=4 regardless of your political party, and people come into school board meetings with talking points they were handed. We want community feedback, but we need to focus on education.

Rose : Said she doesn't let politics distract her. She pointed to what happens when the district focuses on academics and not politics, adding that the district saw seven percentage point growth in third-grade reading and that the state graded 95% of the district's schools an "A" or "B" this year.

Barker: Politics has no place in our schools. The people who come to board meetings to speak are parents and teachers. She emphasized that parents, such as herself, don't feel like they're being heard by the school board.

First approved in 2002, the referendum will determine whether the district can continue to levy a 1 mill per year tax on property, equal to $1 per $1,000 of taxable value. The tax generates upwards of $100 million per year, Superintendent Terry Connor said, revenue that is beyond what the district is authorized to collect under a formula approved each year through the state budget.

The taxes collected from the local option levy would provide ongoing financial support for safety, teacher recruitment and retention, arts and charter schools. The tax was last approved by voters in March of 2022 by an overwhelming margin: 85% in favor and 14.5% opposed .

"This money is foundational to the critical aspects of our School District and without that, we would be in some dire trouble," Connor said.

What is the referendum for? Sarasota School Board approves resolution for November vote on property tax extension

How can the referendum be more effective?

Babicz : He said he wants to lean on the superintendent to see where the money is best spent, and also said he wants to increase teacher salary.

Edwards : He said the referendum has to pass. He doesn't necessarily think its as simple as saying reading scores would drop without the referendum. He pointed to students in impoverished households in Sarasota County, and how providing family resources is key.

Wood : Referendum dollars need to be a net positive for students, and the district needs to think critically and reflectively about how the money is spent.

Rose : Referendum dollars are key to faculty recruitment and retention. With the increasing cost of living in Sarasota County, improving teacher pay — in part through referendum dollars — is crucial.

Barker : Not passing the referendum would be catastrophic. It is not an option to not approve the referendum. Said it goes towards closing the achievement gap.

Do you support making school board elections partisan?

Rose and Wood raised their hands. No other candidate answered "yes".

Charter schools

Babicz : Said he was pro-charter schools and pro-vouchers. But if charter schools expect help from public school districts, they need to deliver on achievement.

Edwards : He pointed out that, if charter schools were removed from the statewide grade calculation, Sarasota's ranking in the state would increase. St. Johns County, a school district Sarasota has chased in the statewide rankings for years, only has one charter school, he said. He said he was against for-profit charter schools, and that the district needs to stand up to Tallahassee and the Florida Legislature more on charters.

Wood : He is pro-charter schools, he said. No one forces students to go there, and if the school isn't good then no one will go to it. He said he wants to make public schools the best, obvious option for parents to send their kids to.

Rose : She supports universal school choice and said competition was key to getting the best out of schools. As a board member, she said she's not in the business of protecting the public school system. Instead, she wants to protect a quality education.

Barker : School board members are elected to the public school board, and should promote public schools. That's your job, she said.

‘Our city is not an RV park’: L.A. to study widespread RV parking ban

Outreach workers at a homeless RV encampment along 77th Street in South Los Angeles.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

An effort to restrict the thousands of RVs parked in residential areas, next to schools and along commercial districts, is gaining steam, as Los Angeles struggles to figure out how to house the families and individuals living in them.

In a 14-0 vote Monday, the Los Angeles City Council ordered city agencies to come up with “recommendations for a citywide program” that would limit RV parking, while also providing restrooms, septic waste removal, help finding housing and other services in designated areas.

Thousands of Angelenos reside in vehicles, and while Mayor Karen Bass has focused on housing homeless people living in tent encampments, finding places for families and individuals sleeping in four-wheel shelters has proved much harder. Many RVs dwellers have jobs or families and don’t want to go to shelters with strict rules, or lose their vehicles.

High rental rates have made RVs a comparatively more dignified alternative for those on the margins. The small bathrooms and living spaces offer privacy, security and a sense of a home. But communities have complained for years about the ubiquity of RVs, with people in some of the worst encampments dumping trash and sewage, starting fires on the street and dealing drugs.

“Our city is not an RV park, and we can’t and shouldn’t put up with the widespread impacts these RV encampments cause,” said Councilmember Traci Park, who championed the motion. Earlier this year, she helped expand overnight parking restrictions in parts of her district, which includes Venice, Mar Vista, Westchester, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades.

Individual council districts have attempted to deal with the proliferation of RVs with a hodgepodge of services from emptying out dirty septic tanks weekly to offering housing programs. But pressure is building for a citywide approach as more districts impose parking restrictions, forcing homeless people to play a nightly game of musical chairs to find a place to sleep.

In a landmark ruling this June, the Supreme Court cleared the way for cities to remove homeless encampments from parks, sidewalks and other areas even when they lack sufficient shelter beds.

Gov. Gavin Newsom then ordered state agencies to remove encampments and encouraged cities to follow. He threatened last week to take away state funding from counties that don’t show improvement on homelessness.

Los Angeles hasn’t “adjusted a single policy,” since the ruling, Park said, in advocating for her motion before the council.

Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who represents the Eastside, where working class communities are facing the constant pressure of gentrification , responded with worries of what the restrictions will mean for families and the city.

“We don’t even have enough staff to enforce it, and I don’t believe it will work,” she said, of any subsequent measure that would come from the recommendations and curb vehicle camping in wide swaths of the city. She voted for Park’s motion, not as an endorsement but as a way to gather data.

She introduced a separate motion, approved in a 14-0 vote, intended to gather more information before creating a citywide policy that would shuffle people around. The legislation asks for a report from the City Administrative Officer and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority that would map out where people are living in RVs and identify potential parking lot space for them.

It would also tabulate the city’s cost for an ordinance that would restrict parking and look deeper into how those rules could adversely hurt vehicle dwellers moved away from the services and networks they rely on and could help them find a permanent home.

“I hope that we can remain conscious that RVs are not just vehicles and not just where, you know, there’s criminal activity sometimes, but they’re homes for many people who have been marginalized,” Hernandez said. “These people are families, veterans and working class individuals who have been forced to find refuge wherever they can. They are real people who face uncertainty.”

The obscure cities you can fly to on Europe’s least-loved airline

WizzAir’s new “all-you-can-fly” subscription service might not be the most tempting offer. Despite its rock-bottom prices, eastern Europe’s answer to Ryanair has a chequered track record for customer satisfaction.

Last year, Telegraph readers  voted it to be their least favourite short-haul airline in Europe (out of 23 contenders). And Wizz can hardly complain you were too tough: they were recently found to be the least punctual airline in the UK for the third year running.

Despite the hiccups, I confess to having a soft spot for Wizz, given that its low fares and expansive route map ignited my travel obsession back in the early 2010s. Ten years later, I still usually pick them over their better-known rivals for shorter flights.

Perhaps I’m the ideal candidate for this new subscription pass, which is currently available for an introductory price of £429 (rising to £515 from tomorrow). Having unlimited flights sounds like heaven, but there are a couple of big caveats.

For a start, the flights aren’t actually free, as you need to pay a €9.99 (or £8.50) “voucher fee” every time you fly. And given Wizz’s already cheap prices, you might not be saving that much.

Looking at flights for next week – peak season, apparently – I found one-way tickets from London to Tirana for £19.99; Split for £31.99; and Prague for £35.99. That said, the tickets to Lisbon (£58.99), Mallorca (£53.99) and Venice (£89.99) were slightly more expensive.

Another catch – and it’s a big one – is that you can only choose flights that take off in the next three days. This means that unless you’re prepared to pay for your return journey, you’ll likely be heading off on holiday without knowing exactly how and when you’re getting back.

What’s more, the terms suggest that only a limited portion of seats will be eligible on each flight (similar to Avios redemptions with BA). What happens if they’re gone? Wizz’s current advice is that anyone in that situation can book a flight “using the regular booking process” – i.e. pay full price.

Perhaps pass holders can minimise the risk of being in that situation by sticking to some of WizzAir’s famously obscure routes. Here are ten destinations which are less likely to sell out:

Kuwait City, Kuwait

When it comes to tourism in the Gulf, there is plenty of choice, with UAE, Qatar, Oman and now Saudi Arabia all competing to bring in visitors.

One country that hasn’t yet entered that race is Kuwait, the oil-rich emirate probably best known for being invaded by Iraq in the first Gulf War. That said, it does have some fancy-looking hotels, including a Four Seasons and a St Regis.

If you do fancy a weekend in an alcohol-free city where the summer weather regularly tops 45 degrees, Wizz has you covered.

Skopje, North Macedonia

The rugged Balkan outpost of Skopje, the birthplace of Mother Teresa, was one of my first trips on Wizz Air back in 2013.

Since then, the country has updated its name (from FYROM, or Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, to the much easier North Macedonia), but its charm remains unchanged.

Expect bustling open-air markets, fragrant street dining, and pretentious monuments to Alexander the Great, whose apparent Macedonian roots have triggered  the most bitter of disputes with neighbouring Greece .

Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Some good news for adventurous travellers: the glorious Silk Road city of Samarkand is a must-see – especially now that Uzbekistan, formerly a hermit kingdom, permits visa-free travel for both Britons and EU arrivals.

The ancient madrassas of Registan Square, built during the 15th-century reign of Timur, are as much a visual feast as anything in Istanbul or Rome. When I visited last summer, I was astounded by the lack of tourists there to see them.

Malé, Maldives

While it certainly isn’t obscure, the Maldives isn’t a typical Wizz Air destination either, given the emphasis on low-cost travel.

Then again, not everything in the Maldives is an island resort. Cost-conscious travellers can instead take  a budget break in the slightly chaotic cities of Malé and Hulhumale .

In my experience, you’ll get as much sunshine as any resort-goers, with better food at a fraction of the price (provided you can handle your spice). What you won’t get, however, is a single drop of alcohol or accommodation that exceeds the typical boarding house.

Chisinau, Moldova

The former Soviet republic of Moldova holds the position of being the least visited country in Europe. Is it really that bad? I’d be the first to argue otherwise.

Moldova lacks the majestic landscapes of its bigger sibling Romania, but it is  blessed with good wine, ancient fortresses, and an intriguing clash of romantic and Soviet architecture .

It also contains the pro-Russian puppet state known as Pridnestrovie or Transnistria, which has long fascinated travellers of a certain bent. I suspect it all feels a bit sadder, though, after the events in neighbouring Ukraine.

Erbil, Iraq

The capital of Kurdish Iraq (an autonomous region that remains on broadly good terms with Baghdad) isn’t quite the terrifying prospect that it might sound. And though almost exclusively a business destination, Erbil does come recommended by some travel bloggers on YouTube.

That said, the Foreign Office advises against travel to the region, albeit assigning it an amber classification (“essential travel only”), rather than the much sterner red (i.e. do not go in any circumstances) used for the rest of Iraq.

Turkistan, Kazakhstan

As someone who jumped at the chance to visit Kazakhstan when Wizz Air launched its first Astana route in 2017, I’m glad to see that the arrangement has continued.

As the airline’s third stop in Kazakhstan, Turkistan is undoubtedly the strangest of the trio. The small city (population around 200,000) is rather remote even by Central Asian standards. A train to the cultural capital of Almaty will take around 20 hours.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Even with Saudi Arabia’s recent break with its Wahhabist past (letting women drive, for example), the capital of Riyadh is generally regarded as much more austere than other cities (notably the Red Sea port of Jeddah).

Still, Saudi’s ambitious crown prince Mohammed bin Salman clearly has ambitions for the city, spending billions to host major sporting events (notably boxing matches and WWE pro-wrestling) to put it on the wider tourism map.

Will it be the start of a new era for Saudi Arabia? Wizz Air seems to think so, given it has been expanding its operations in the country.

Yerevan, Armenia

The capital of the ancient nation of Armenia, Yerevan doesn’t make the typical shortlist for summer holidays. But the Caucasus republic is tipped as a hidden gem by those in the know, partly due to its fascinating cultural heritage.

Indeed it’s a shame Wizz Air hadn’t launched the route when I visited in 2019. On that occasion, I had to fly with the Russian carrier Aeroflot, whose service makes Wizz seem like Pan Am by comparison.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

A mountainous realm wedged between the deserts of China and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan has emerged as a favoured destination for adventurous tourists – due in part to its emphasis on high-end equine tourism.

A horseback trek through the vast Jyrgalan Valley is one thing. But how about a city break in Bishkek itself, Kyrgyzstan’s relatively young (founded in 1825) capital city?

Surrounded by the imposing Tien Shan mountains, the city has been praised for its cosmopolitan and liberal vibe – at least by regional standards.

2024 Florida high school football can't miss games and which steam live on NFHS Network

Portrait of Jon Santucci

Football season is right around the corner, which means it’s time to get on the bus and see some great games.

With that in mind, it’s time USA Today Florida Network’s fourth annual Ultimate Season Pass.

The rules are simple.

You can only one game per week.

You can only see games featuring two in-state teams.

You can only see each team once a year.

Obviously, that has some inherent challenges. You won’t be able to see every team and you may miss some pristine matchups because the schedules must align perfectly. After all, you don’t want to go to a game that features a top-10 team against a perennial doormat. That’s no fun.

So, trying to thread the needle of seeing 22 really good teams that also have outstanding recruits, here’s what we came up with.

Kickoff Classic: Mainland at Eau Gallie, Aug. 17

Storyline: Mainland won the Class 3S state title in 2023 but will have a different look this fall with just four starters returning and a new coach in Jerrime Bell . Eau Gallie is coming off a 10-win season and have a talented roster looking to build on last year’s regional semifinal appearance.

Top recruits to watch: Eau Gallie 2025 DL Brandon Brown (LSU commit, No. 65 USA Today top 100), Mainland 2025 DL Christian Hudson (UCF commit, No. 73 top 100), Eau Gallie 2026 S Xavier Lherisse, Mainland 2026 LB Dennis King III, Eau Gallie 2027 QB Joseph Allen

Watch on NFHS Network: Mainland at Eau Gallie

Week 1: Lakeland at Miami Central, Aug. 23

Storyline: Two of the state’s premier programs face off in the regular season opener. Lakeland is coming off back-to-back Class 4S state titles and will look to make a statement against Central. The Rockets had a four-year state title streak snapped in 2023 and have been focused on getting back to the top of the mountain this offseason.

Top recruits to watch: Miami Central 2025 WR Naeshaun Montgomery (No. 35 top 100), Lakeland 2025 S Keon Young (Ole Miss commit, No. 37 top 100), Miami Central 2025 LB Ezekiel Marcelin (Miami commit, No. 55 top 100), 2025 DL Floyd Boucard (Oklahoma commit, No. 57 top 100), Lakeland 2026 LB Malik Morris

Week 2: Miami Northwestern at Venice, Aug. 30

Storyline: Northwestern is coming off a rare down season, but expectations are high with former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in his first year coaching his alma mater. The Bulls face a tough early-season road test at a Venice squad that has played in three consecutive state title games and won the Class 8A championship in 2021.

Top recruits to watch: Venice 2025 WR Winston Watkins Jr. (No. 34 top 100), Northwestern 2025 S Antionio Branch Jr. (Penn State commit. No. 69 top 100), Northwestern 2025 ATH Jade Card (FAU commit), Northwestern 2026 WR Calvin Russell Jr., Venice 2026 EDGE Asharri Charles

Week 3: Cocoa at IMG, Sept. 6

Storyline: Cocoa, which won back-to-back state titles, already has a reputation for playing some of the state’s top teams and now the Tigers travel to Sarasota to play one of the nation’s best. IMG is coming off an undefeated season and is looking for its first national championship since 2020. Miami Central is the only public school to beat IMG in the past decade.

Top recruits to watch: Cocoa 2025 EDGE Javion Hilson (Florida State commit, No. 5 top 100), IMG 2025 WR Donovan Olugbode (Missouri commit, No. 14 top 100), IMG 2025 LB Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng (No. 16 top 100), Cocoa 2025 WR Jayvan Boggs (Missouri commit, No. 23 top 100), IMG 2026 DL Elijah Golden

Week 4: Edgewater at Jones, Sept. 14

Storyline: Two of the premier programs in Central Florida face off in an early season game. These rivals have played four times the past two seasons with Edgewater winning both regular season matchups and Jones avenging those losses in the regional playoffs on their way to back-to-back Final Four appearances.

Top recruits to watch: Jones 2025 WR Vernell Brown III (Florida commit, No. 8 top 100), Edgewater 2025 WR Semaj Fleming (Boston College, No. 90 top 100), Edgewater 2025 OL Jaden Wilkerson (Miami commit), Jones 2026 QB Dereon Coleman (Miami commit), Edgewater 2026 QB Carter Emanuel

Watch on NFHS Network: Orlando Edgewater at Orlando Jones

Week 5: Lake Wales at Seminole, Sept. 20

Storyline: A matchup of two recent state champions — Lake Wales won Class 3S in 2022; Seminole won Class 8A in 2020 — and both have title aspirations in 2024. Both teams were regional finalists in 2023, with Lake Wales having a 27-game win streak snapped in the regional championship.

Top recruits to watch: Seminole 2025 OL Max Buchanan (Miami commit, No. 22 top 100), Seminole 2025 LB Ethan Pritchard (Florida State commit, No. 61 top 100), Seminole 2026 QB Michael Clayton, Lake Wales 2026 WR Gabriel Legrand, Lake Wales 2027 ATH Kaneilius Purdy

Watch on NFHS Netowrk: Lake Wales at Seminole

Week 6: Cardinal Newman at Jesuit, Sept. 27

Storyline: Cardinal Newman has been a consistent winner since coach Jack Daniels arrived two years ago, reaching the regional final each year. Jesuit, the 2021 Class 6A state champion, is looking to get back to the Final Four after falling in the regional championship last fall.

Top recruits to watch: Jesuit 2025 RB Justin Thurman (Notre Dame commit, No. 58 top 100), Cardinal Newman 2025 DB Max Redmon (Florida State commit. No. 89 top 100), Cardinal Newman 2025 RB Jaylin Brown (Louisville commit), Jesuit 2026 QB Will Griffin (Florida commit), Cardinal Newman 2026 ATH Jyron Hughley

Week 7: American Heritage at Miami Norland, Oct. 4

Storyline: American Heritage, the 2021 Class 2M state runner-up and 2022 regional champion, returns a loaded offense that should have the Patriots in the mix for a state title this fall. Norland is coming off 14-win season and an appearance in the Class 2M state championship game.

Top recruits to watch: American Heritage 2025 RB Byron Louis (No. 25 top 100), American Heritage 2025 CB Greg Thomas (Florida State commit, No. 29 top 100), Norland 2025 EDGE Darryll Desir (UCF commit, No. 71 top 100), Norland 2025 EDGE Mandrell Desir (UCF commit, No. 91 top 100), American Heritage 2026 QB Dia Bell (Texas commit)

Week 8: St. Thomas Aquinas at Chaminade-Madonna, Oct. 11

Storyline: Two of the premier teams in the nation. Aquinas has its sights set on a sixth consecutive state title and has the type of schedule that would put the Raiders firmly in the conversation for a national title if they can get through unscathed. Chaminade was the No. 2 team in the nation in 2023 and has won three consecutive state titles.

Top recruits to watch: Chaminade 2025 CB Chris Ewald (Miami commit, No. 24 top 100), Chaminade 2025 ATH Koby Howard (Penn State commit, No. 46 top 100), Aquinas 2025 LB Travares Daniels (Maryland commit), Chaminade 2026 RB Derrek Cooper, Aquinas 2026 DB Justice Fitzpatrick

Watch on NFHS Network: St. Thomas Aquinas at Chaminade-Madonna

Week 9: Bolles at Riverside

Storyline: Bolles had an up-and-down regular season in 2023, but still managed to win eight games and reach the state semifinals for the fifth consecutive year. Riverside has averaged eight wins per year the past three seasons, including nine wins and its sixth consecutive regional semifinal appearance in 2023.

Top recruits to watch: Riverside 2025 WR/TE Tae’shaun Gelsey (Florida commit, No. 67 top 100), Bolles 2025 WR Chase Collier (Baylor commit), Riverside 2025 WR Myles Kendrick (Indiana commit), Bolles 2026 WR Naeem Burroughs, Bolles 2026 TE Corbyn Fordham

Week 10: Wharton at Armwood, Oct. 25

Storyline: The talented District 8-6A rivals have split four meetings during the past three seasons, with three of those games being decided by a single score. That includes Armwood’s 20-14 win in the regional quarterfinals last season. This could be the de-facto district title game.

Top recruits to watch: Armwood 2025 RB Girard Pringle (Miami commit, No. 26 top 100), Armwood 2025 WR Tyler Williams (Georgia commit, No. 53 top 100), Armwood 2025 ATH O’Lontae Dean, Armwood 2026 WR Jaelen Waters (Florida commit), Wharton 2026 OT Canon Pickett

Watch on NFHS Netowrk: Wharton at Armwood

Week 11: St. Augustine at Mandarin

Storyline: Two of the premier programs in northeast Florida — both state runners-up in the respective classes in 2023 — face off one week before the postseason starts. St. Augustine went 13-1 last season and has one of the most potent passing games in the state. Mandarin won 11 games in 2023 and returns a loaded team on both sides of the ball.

Top recruits to watch: Mandarin 2025 WR Jaime Ffrench (No. 4 top 100), Mandarin 2025 S Hylton Stubbs (Miami commit. No. 6 top 100), Mandarin 2025 QB Tramell Jones Jr. (Florida State commit, No. 39 top 100), St. Augustine WR Carl Jenkins Jr. (UCF commit, No. 76 top 100), St. Augustine QB Locklan Hewlett (USF commit, No. 92 top 100)
