14 Unique Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta with Itineraries (+ hidden gems and secret spots) for 2024

Share with your friends!

Opportunities for day trips from Puerto Vallarta are endless – whether you want undisturbed beaches, sleepy fishing villages, mountain adventures, hiking, hidden beaches or historic towns, you have so many options.

While there aren’t any ruins near Puerto Vallarta (you’ll have to visit the Yucatan for that), the whole coast is surrounded by ocean bays, beaches and the Sierra Madre mountains, providing endless possibilities for fun and adventure.

These ideas are perfect for people looking for:

A day off the beach or resort

Things to do on a cruise ship stop

Getting off the beaten path

Some new things if you feel like you’ve done all the regular day trip stuff!

side trips from puerto vallarta

By the way – the tours, ideas and itineraries on this list are things you can actually do.

For instance, the tourist town of Tequila is often mentioned as a great day trip, but it’s well over 4 hours away, so probably not a place that you’re going to visit if you only have a week in Puerto Vallarta.

So, here are some of the best excursions and places to see near Puerto Vallarta on a day trip.

( This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust! )

1. Hot Springs at Nuevo Ixtlan Aguas Termales

Watch the full video tour!

side trips from puerto vallarta

Yes, there are hot springs you can visit near Puerto Vallarta, less than a couple hours away making for a perfect day trip.

You will head inland, closer to the Sierra Madre mountains (read – stunning scenery)!

The hot springs known as Nuevo Ixtlan are natural , but the owners have created about a dozen stone tubs (of different sizes) where the natural thermal water is piped into.

The water stays at about 25 degrees celsius, so it’s pleasant to visit all year round.

Now, unless you know the area and have a high clearance vehicle, I recommend you book a tour.

Tip – Book this tour through Viator like we did

It includes transportation , visiting a local market, a soak in the hot springs, a fresh BBQ lunch and a massage on the beach after a full day of adventure. Wow!!

P.S. – there’s more than just these hot springs in the area, check out this full guide to the 8 best hot springs and waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta .

2. Swim in a Natural Saltwater Pool

side trips from puerto vallarta

Try something different and head north into the Riviera Nayarit to explore some beautiful beaches that are mostly known only by local surfers.

Your final destination is a spot called Alberca de mar at Punta Mita. It’s a natural pool in the ocean !

This trip is for the adventurous. It’s perfect if you’re looking to leave the busier pace of Puerto Vallarta or if you feel like a fun day off the resort.

You’ll be heading north towards Punta Mita.

Find your way to the untouched Burros Beach (here’s a google marker ).

Follow a short hike through the jungle to the next beach, which is the left side of the Grand Palladium Resort.

This is where a natural, saltwater pool is located for you to swim and lounge in.

Of course, the easiest way to find it is by staying at the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa !

3. Botanical Gardens, River Swimming and Tequila Distilleries

side trips from puerto vallarta

Instead of a day trip to the town of Tequila (which is 4 hours from Puerto Vallarta), head to the tequila distilleries down by the Botanical Gardens near Mismaloya.

Make an entire day out of it by strolling through the botanical gardens for a couple of hours admiring the orchids, cacti, cacoa plants and coffee trees.

Then swim in the river onsite, have lunch and explore the several tequila distilleries in the area.

You can either do this on your own by book a tour.

We booked this tour through Viator and loved every moment.

Pro tip – I find it very useful to know some conversational Spanish when I’m on holiday in Mexico. Rocket Languages is my favorite program to learn Spanish. Try it out here for a free 7-day trial .

Knowing a few phrases in Spanish has helped us get better deals, find great hidden gems and avoided being ripped off multiple times!

4. Take a Water Taxi in the Quaint Fishing Village of Yelapa

side trips from puerto vallarta

Spend a whole day in Yelapa, a laid back village only accessible by boat .

No cars here, but you’ll see plenty of horses. Many folks describe Yelapa like Puerto Vallarta was in the 1970s.

To get here, take an orange bus heading to Boca de Tomatlan. The best spot to catch it from is the southern end of the romantic zone, and it should be about 30 pesos.

Inside tip – sit on the right side of the bus to enjoy the view and scenery.

Once you’re in Boca, grab a water taxi – negotiate the price before you get on the boat (should be about 200 pesos).

The boat ride itself is quite the experience – it’s about 30 minutes.

If you’re visiting in the right season, you might be able to spot whales (drivers are always watching and will point them out).

Choose to get off at the second boat stop which is the Yelapa town centre (the first stop is the beach).

Tip – first check the boat return times so you can plan when you need to be back by.

Walk around the charming little fishing village and find somewhere to eat.

Then, follow the path that takes you behind all the houses that will lead you towards a waterfall hike .

There are vendors along the way, so you can always ask them to make sure you know where to go.

side trips from puerto vallarta

Enjoy the beautiful views and swim in at the base of the waterfall.

On your way back, hit the beach and look for the pie lady !

Playa Isabel is the beach to visit if you want shallow and more swimmable water.

Make it easy by booking a day trip !

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel, arrange the boat ride, lead you through the jungle to the waterfall, recommend best places for lunch and show you around Yelapa and its best beaches.

For added off the beaten path fun from Puerto Vallarta, I recommend strolling through the winding roads up through the hills and checking out the authentic restaurants and bars.

Need a cool place to stay in Yelapa?

side trips from puerto vallarta

Chances are you’ll fall in love with this laid back spot and won’t want to leave (or maybe you missed the last water taxi??)

I recommend Casa Coco a beautiful home with the most perfect sun-filled terrace overlooking the ocean .

From here you can also access the Cathedral Waterfall (about an hour hike), which is the bigger and better waterfall that most tourists miss.

Interested in another Mexican Eco-Resort? Read more about our incredible stay at this one in the middle of the mayan jungle.

5. Ancient Petroglyphs in the Middle of the Jungle

side trips from puerto vallarta

On this day trip , you will head to Altavista to visit a sacred archeological site known as Pila del Rey.

On your guided hike through the jungle, you will come to a natural pool surrounded by smooth large rocks covered in ancient signs and symbols that were carved thousands of years ago.

Get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in the incredible history of the Indigenous people of this region.

6. The Old Town of Mascota, Jalisco

side trips from puerto vallarta

Travel higher up in the mountains to the historical town of Mascota, a charming place found among the Sierra Madre mountains.

On your way there, stop at a raicilla and tequila distillery, then arrive in town and tour the ancient churches, petroglyphs and old cobblestone streets .

You’ll also visit the scenic spot called Yerbabuena, a lagoon plaza.

This tour includes stops at Mascota and Talpa de Allende – both are Pueblos Magicos or ‘magic villages.’

This tour includes hotel pickup and breakfast and lunch.

While you can rent a car and drive yourself, the road is tricky to navigate and having a driver allows you to enjoy the stunning scenery along the way.

7. San Sebastián del Oeste

side trips from puerto vallarta

Step back in time to the 1700s by walking through the narrow, historic streets of San Sebastián del Oeste , probably one of the best non-beach things to do outside of Puerto Vallarta .

Stroll through the romantic, narrow streets in this jewel of a town nestled within the mountains.

On your way, stop at the bridge for great photos and pick up something yummy at the bakery.

Visit La Quinta for organic coffee and a tour of the plantation behind the storefront, go for a tasting at the Don Lalin tequila distillery for their unique flavors – like pomegranate tequila.

Check out the gold and silver mines and have an amazing lunch or dinner at the Italian restaurant, Montebello.

There’s also a scenic spot called La Bufa higher up in the hills, where you can either hike up or drive for an amazing lookout.

side trips from puerto vallarta

I suggest a guided tour to visit San Sebastián del Oeste, as your guide will take care of all the driving and share the fascinating history of the area and stories of the families who live there.

I recommend this tour , where you guide will tell you all about the small villages you pass through, take you to many of the places noted above.

If you’re visiting Puerto Vallarta on a day trip from a cruise, book this private tour who will pick you up at the port and tour you around the 17th-century mountain town of San San Sebastian del Oeste.

Cute Coastal Communities

8. surfing in sayulita and san pancho.

side trips from puerto vallarta

Sayulita is a hip little surfer town, but there’s a lot more to it than that.

If you like trendy vibes and think of busyness as more of an energetic vibe, then Sayulita is the place for you.

I think it’s totally worth going up to Sayulita for a day trip, even if you don’t surf.

My guide to fun things to do in Sayulita on a day trip has tons of ideas for you.

But if you do want to try it, there are plenty of instructors who will work with you for a one-hour private lesson – and it’s so much fun!

a girl wearing a pink and black bathing suit surfing on a turquoise surf board

But, it’s also fun to explore the colorful streets and visit the cute boutique shops.

Suggestion – Maybe some of your group wants to surf and others don’t? Book a hike & yoga session !

You’ll enjoy a tranquil hike through the jungle that leads you to a quiet beach where you instructor will guide you through a practice as you listen to the gentle waves.

Then, find a spot on the beach, order yourself a passion fruit margarita and watch everyone else surf!

There are some world class restaurants here (especially if you’re vegan), so definitely stick around for dinner.

close up of a yellow drink in a round glass on a table at the beach

And whether you come here to surf or not, you should go find the hidden beach , a 10-minute stroll passed a picturesque cemetery to your own personal, perfectly clear water oasis.

On the other side of Sayulita (north) if you want to keep exploring, a little further is Las Cuevas beach and then Mal Paso.

Have something to eat at Don Pedro on the beach, especially if you love ahi tuna – you’ll know where to find it, it’s usually the busiest place but for a reason!

side trips from puerto vallarta

The best place to stay in Sayulita is the Hotel Peix , it’s a small boutique hotel right on the beach in a perfect central location.

Even if you don’t stay overnight, you can still be served from their beach lounge chairs and they have the best rooftop bar.

Or check out my full guide to the best places to stay in Sayulita .

Alternatively, you could visit San Pancho, less than 15 minutes north of Sayulita, for a more chill experience.

If you want a similar beach and a few shops and restaurants, San Pancho is basically a low-key version of Sayulita.

9. Sunday Market hopping in Bucerias and La Cruz

Sunday is market day and if you love farmer’s markets , you will love the ones in Bucerias and La Cruz.

La Cruz is well known for being the best in the area.

The food is great and there are many unique, hand-made items here that aren’t normally found in all the other touristy shops.

side trips from puerto vallarta

La Cruz is about 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta.

And of course, you might as well visit a perfect beach while you’re here – Destiladeras Beach is just north of town.

It’s super quiet and one of the nicest beaches around, plus the water is very clear and shallow.

Find some beach chairs to rent where staff will serve you food and drinks.

Between La Cruz and Puerto Vallarta is Bucerias, a charming community with a great blend of locals and expats.

If you want a massage on the beach , come to Bucerias where it’s much cheaper.

Stroll through the colorful streets and on a self-guided ‘instagrammable spots’ tour.

Then park yourselves at Karen’s on the beach for happy hour!

Or, plan a half-day cultural tour where you get to meet local families and artisans who will share their stories, show you their way of life and cook you lunch!

Read more about visiting Bucerias here .

10. Outdoor Adventures at the Canopy River

side trips from puerto vallarta

Enjoy a fiesta in the mountains as they call it! Come here to walk or ride an ATV across the Jorullo Bridge – the longest suspension bridge in the world that can support vehicles.

Ride the zipline through the jungle over the Cuale river.

And if you need some liquid courage to help you get across the suspension bridge…there’s plenty of margaritas and beer at the restaurant.

Or enjoy a great meal at the restaurant afterwards.

Book the highest rated tour on Tripadvisor which includes the Jorulla bridge, zip line, mule riding through the jungle and then tequila tasting at their mountaintop bar, which also has an infinity pool to lounge in!

11. Speedboat Ride and Zipline into a Tequila Bar Tour

This tour is the perfect day trip for cruise ship passengers.

On the Los Veranos Canopy Tour, you can enjoy a speedboat ride and soar above the Sierra Madre foothills on a network of 15 zip lines, with the last one ending at a tequila bar!

Then make sure you’ve got your swimsuit because right from the bar, you can take the natural waterslides into the calm river pools to cool off.

12. Visit Mayto and Tehuamixtle – Off the Beaten Path Beaches

side trips from puerto vallarta

About two hours south of Puerto Vallarta are Mayto and Tehualmixtle beaches – they are pristine and make for a fun and relaxing day trip that’s off the beaten tourist path.

These beaches are long and wide and visited by very few, making it a great way to find open space to relax and distance from others.

At Mayto, you can visit the Campamento Tortuguero to help release baby turtles into the ocean!

And if you want calm water to swim in, Tehuamixtle is the beach you want to visit.

side trips from puerto vallarta

Grab this tour that will take you by boat to several hidden beaches (including Mayto and  Tehuamixtle) as well as a stop at the botanical gardens.

You’ll have a chance to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. In this day and age with all the health concerns, I recommend bringing your own gear.

I like this full face mask and snorkel , a total game changer!

Plus, there are some ultra romantic hotels here if you’re looking for a getaway that’s a little more slower paced and secluded – try Hotel Mayto .

13. Hacienda Tour on Horseback with Tequila Tasting

side trips from puerto vallarta

For something a little different to do just outside of Puerto Vallarta, try horseback riding through the fo othills of the Sierra Madre mountains.

You’ll ride to a traditional Hacienda. where you’ll get a tour of the beautiful property and countryside, enjoy a traditional Mexican lunch and taste the different tequilas that are made from the agave plants grown on site.

Oh, and bring your bathing suit as you’ll pass by a river and a natural hot spring for a quick dip!

Book this awesome tour with Carlos!

14. Cycle Along the Coastline to Punta de Mita

If you’ve been laying on the beach or by the pool and are in need of a little exercise and sightseeing at the same time, this tour is for you.

You will cycle about 40 miles on a gorgeous route through the hills, have lunch and admire beautiful Punta de Mita and then head back to PV. Bikes are provided!

Book your tour here (plan for about 4-5 hours).

>> Staying at an all-inclusive resort? Here’s a Packing List (17 things you should always bring)

I hope you’ll find that most of these day trip ideas are a fresh perspective. You might be wondering why there are some popular day tours not included on this list.

Visiting Marietas Island (the hidden beach) is one of them.

I visited a few years ago and it was honestly overrated. There were way too many people and the beach itself was underwhelming – one of those places where the photos were way nicer than the experience.

I’ve heard they have since restricted the number of people who can visit at a time, so it’s nice to see some responsible tourism practices going on.

Instead, I’ve curated some more unique ideas that can be done on your own (if you have a car or want to take the bust) or with a local tour guide in a small group for a more personal experience.

In my opinion, it’s these types of trips that always turn out the best!

15 Best Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

In contrast to its Caribbean cousins like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen , Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s Pacific coastal towns that hasn’t yet been irreversibly marred by Western capitalism.

In fact, it’s one of the most astonishingly beautiful places in the country.

Young backpackers in search of adventure – as well as relaxed foreigners who’ve settled for a life in the sun – roam the pretty streets, and though the nightlife is plentiful, it’s entertaining without being raucous.

However, as is the way with many colonial centers in Latin America, there’s so much more than meets the eye in the surrounding areas.

From breathtaking mountain ranges to impossibly charming fishing villages – as well as beautiful, historic towns – the area surrounding Puerto Vallarta is bursting with day trips.

Here are the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta :

Yelapa, Mexico

Nestled into the picturesque Banderas Bay, Yelapa is a favorite getaway for people looking to take a quick escape from the urban atmosphere of Puerto Vallarta and unwind.

The fact that you can only get there by boat makes it feel even more remote, and you won’t be disappointed when you arrive.

The gorgeous white sand beach has forested mountains on one side and a palm tree-lined lagoon on the other.

Relax in the sun drinking cocktails and swim in the warm water to your heart’s content.

If you’re in search of something a little more adventurous, you can take a mild half-hour hike to a well-known waterfall that’s well worth the walk; just ask a local for directions.

Suggested Activity : Puerto Vallarta: Yelapa and Majahuitas Beach Adventure

2. Islas Marietas

Islas Marietas

With preservation of nature in mind, the Islas Marietas are a group of incredibly well-protected islands that can be explored in the space of a day from Puerto Vallarta.

Unlike some national parks in Thailand that are sadly no longer accessible because of overcrowding, the Islas Marietas enforce laws – such as limited numbers of visitors at a time, or even outright prohibiting access to some of the islands.

One that is open to the public is Playa Escondida, a hidden paradise in the form of a beach surrounded by a circle of rock walls.

The waters around these islands are teeming with tropical marine life thanks to these laws, so be sure to bring snorkeling gear and keep an eye out for dolphins and turtles.

3. Majahuitas

Majahuitas

One of the best sunset spots near Puerto Vallarta, Majahuitas is a secluded beach just south of town.

Like Yelapa, it can only be accessed by boat.

The homely beach huts serving fresh seafood and the smiling fisherman going about their day make for an irresistibly charming atmosphere.

Many people visit each year to get back to nature and away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

4. Las Caletas

Las Caletas

Without a doubt one of the most unbelievably flawless beaches on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Las Caletas is the stuff of Instagram travel pages.

It is easily reachable from Puerto Vallarta.

Hammocks strung up in the shallows let you while away the day in the sun with the water lapping underneath you, whilst the more actively-inclined can embark on snorkeling trips, diving excursions and trek around the neighboring jungle.

Astonishing flora and fauna are never far away in Las Caletas, so be sure to bring your camera.

Recommended tour : Las Caletas Beach 7-Hour Tour from Puerto Vallarta

5. Sayulita

Sayulita

What would a Pacific coastal destination be without at least one good surf spot? Sayulita has long been a haven for surfers of all levels, thanks to the river mouth break that varies in difficulty depending on the season.

As a result, its sleepy town has a charming bohemian atmosphere without being overly party-oriented.

When you’re not surfing or sunning yourself on the gorgeous beaches, you can wander the pretty streets browsing souvenirs or grab a bite from delicious taco stands, washed down with a cold beer at one of the many inviting bars.

Available tour : Sayulita Beach: 6-Hour Trip from Puerto Vallarta

Mascota

Venturing away from the coast, allow yourself the simple pleasures of one of the Sierra Madre’s most popular mountain destinations – the town of Mascota.

The small town offers a fascinating insight into what life is like for local people, away from the glitz of the beaches and palm trees; the local community is incredibly welcoming to visitors.

Boasting beautiful churches like the Preciosa Sangre Church, and intriguing points of interest like the Anthropology Museum, Mascota is a great place to wander around for the day if you’re looking for a change of scenery.

Tequila Town

Named so because of the beautiful agave fields that surround it, Tequila is a magical little town steeped in colonial history and architecture.

Walls draped with vines and vibrantly colored flowers line the little cobblestone streets, and beautiful churches are to be found around every corner.

It would be criminal to miss out on the town’s namesake, so be sure to embark on a tequila tasting tour or two at the numerous world-famous distilleries like La Rojeña de José Cuervo.

8. Barra De Navidad

Barra De Navidad

With a rocky seafront lined with a grove of palm trees, wooded hills rising gently in the background and its fair share of unspoiled beaches, Barra de Navidad is a paradise getaway with all the offerings of an authentic Mexican fishing and farming community.

Nestled in the Bahia de Navidad, the town is small but beautiful and is a hotspot for people who want to go on fishing trips.

If you prefer dry land, however, you’ll find yourself immediately charmed by the friendly locals and world-class restaurants scattered throughout town.

9. Sierra Madre

Sierra Madre, Mexico

The Sierra Madre Mountains consist of low-lying jungle that gradually turns into drier woodland as you head further up.

A day trip here is the perfect way to take a break from the coast and experience the diverse landscapes found in this part of Mexico.

From iguanas and snakes to all manner of tropical birds, you’re sure to see some fauna you’ve never laid eyes upon before.

Between off-road jeep tours, hikes, and places to stop and eat, there’s more than enough to keep the intrepid traveler entertained for a day in the Sierra Madre.

Suggested tour : Sierra Madre Jeep Safari with Lunch

10. Guadalajara

Guadalajara, Mexico

The proud capital of the state of Jalisco, Guadalajara is vast by global standards, but bursting at the seams with culture, colonial beauty and an irresistible zest for life.

Intersected by wide, pedestrianized avenues, gorgeous plazas, and palm tree-lined streets, it’s everything you could want from a Mexican urban hub and more.

The food – it goes without saying – is world class, whether found at a street stall or upmarket restaurant.

The nightlife is flavourful and seductive, while the architecture of the various UNESCO sites – like Guadalajara Cathedral – is enough to keep any visitor spellbound for the day.

11. San Sebastian

San Sebastian, Mexico

From mining town to popular tourist destination, San Sebastian is a designated Pueblo Magico – recognized as a destination full of historical character and charm by the Mexican government.

Nestled high in the Sierra Madre, the town is remote but gorgeous.

Surrounded by hills and forests, San Sebastian is home to agave and coffee farmers, as well as attractive 18th Century architecture and churches that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

12. Jorullo Bridge

Jorullo Bridge

Suspended above the Cuale River is one of the most scenic day trips you can take close to Puerto Vallarta, as well as being a record-breaking one! The Jorullo Bridge is the longest hanging bridge on the planet; from its lofty height, you can catch breathtaking views of the Sierra Madre mountains and the river below.

Nearby, El Salto waterfall will provide a welcome cool-off after the long walk across the bridge.

Talpa

Reminiscent of Quito and other Latin American mountain hubs, Talpa is less than two hours away from Puerto Vallarta and offers an entirely new world to explore.

With breathtaking views of the Esmerelda Valley – complete with rolling hills and majestic volcanoes – the town’s location is an inspiration for many of the artists who live there.

Whether you’re enjoying a meal cooked for you by a local family or browsing the small, sometimes secretive art galleries, there’s always a sense of magic in the air at Talpa.

14. Los Arcos

Los Arcos

Named after the geological formations found there, Los Arcos is a picture-perfect beach near Puerto Vallarta that attracts hundreds of visitors every year to explore its rocky arches.

The enormous rocks are covered in vegetation and have been bleached by the sun, making for an impressive backdrop to marvel at from the beach.

If you want a closer look, you can either go on a guided snorkel tour or paddle out by yourself to explore the waters around the rock’s base.

15. Mirador Cerro La Cruz

Mirador Cerro La Cruz

Though it’s still technically within the city limits, we couldn’t miss out one of our favorite viewpoints in Puerto Vallarta.

The Mirador de la Cruz is a moderate hike that takes you up onto a hill overlooking the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other, with the city in between.

The isolated peak gives unobstructed and truly mind-blowing views of the landscape around you – don’t forget to bring your camera.

Side Trips in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit

Yelapa: Robinson Crusoe Meets Jack Kerouac

It's a cove straight out of a tropical fantasy, and only a 45-minute trip by boat from Puerto Vallarta. Yelapa has no cars and one paved (pedestrian-only) road, and it only acquired electricity in the past 10 years. It's accessible only by boat. Its tranquillity, natural beauty, and seclusion make it a popular home for hipsters, artists, writers, and a few expats (looking to escape the stress of the world, or perhaps the law). Yelapa remains casual and friendly -- you're unlikely to ever meet a stranger.

To get there, travel by excursion boat or inexpensive water taxi. You can spend an enjoyable day, but I recommend a longer stay -- it provides a completely different perspective.

Once you're in Yelapa, you can lie in the sun, swim, snorkel, eat fresh grilled seafood at a beachside restaurant, or sample the local moonshine, raicilla. The beach vendors specialize in the most amazing pies you've ever tasted (coconut, lemon, or chocolate). You can tour this tiny town or hike up a river to see one of two waterfalls; the closest to town is about a 5-minute walk straight up from the pier. Note: If you use a local guide, agree on a price before you start out. Horseback riding, guided birding, fishing trips, and paragliding are also available.

For overnight accommodations, local residents frequently rent rooms, and there's also the rustic Hotel Lagunita (www.hotel-lagunita.com; tel. 322/209-5056, -5055). Its 29 cabañas have private bathrooms, and the hotel has electricity, a saltwater pool, massage service, an amiable restaurant and bar, the Barracuda Beach lounge and brick-oven pizza cafe, and a gourmet coffee shop. Though the prices are high for what you get, it is the most accommodating place for most visitors. Double rates run up to $120 during high season and up to $90 in the off season. Special rooms are available for honeymooners, for $135 in high season. MasterCard and Visa are accepted. Lagunita is a popular spot for yoga retreats.

If you wish to splurge, look into staying at Verana (www.verana.com; tel. 866/687-9358 in the U.S., or 322/222-0878).

If you stay over on a Wednesday or Saturday during the winter, don't miss the biweekly dinner-dance at the Yelapa Yacht Club (no phone). Typically tongue-in-cheek for Yelapa, the "yacht club" consists of a cement dance floor and a disco ball, but the DJ spins a great range of tunes, attracting all ages and types. Dinner (80-160 pesos) is a bonus -- the food may be the best anywhere in the bay. The menu changes depending on what's fresh. Ask for directions; it's in the main village, on the beach.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Day trips from puerto vallarta to guadalajara.

Guadalajara has a beautiful historic center, great tequila-tasting bars (some say this is where Tequila was born), and other fun activities for the whole family.

Because of its historic connections and beautiful architecture, it’s a wonderful place for children to experience a more authentic piece of Mexico.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

Distance: 205 miles

Guadalajara is in inland western Mexico, about a five-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta. However, a new highway in the works should significantly reduce travel time.

However, there are several direct flights from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. This might be the best route if you’re taking a day trip.

The flight is only about an hour, and the airport in both cities is pretty easy to get to and from.

Visiting the Sierra Madre Mountains

Puerto Vallarta sits at the foot of the incredible Sierra Madre Mountains and is one of the best starting points for hiking and adventuring around the lush mountain range.

The Sierra Madre Mountains are about 250 miles (400 kilometers) long, so there’s plenty of space for exploring.

You can explore a diverse ecosystem, waterfalls, beautiful views of the forest and surrounding region, and a nice escape from the busy city of Puerto Vallarta.

There are many ways to get out and explore the Sierra Madre, including ATV tours , ziplining adventures, simple day hikes for all levels, and other activities for your outdoor adventure in Puerto Vallarta. But no matter which you go with, you’re sure to have a blast. Especially if you and your family are adventurous travelers.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to the Sierra Madre Mountains

Distance: 10 miles

The best way to the Sierra Madre Mountains is with a guided tour. The mountain range is vast and remote, and it’s incredibly easy to get lost. With a tour guide, you can make the most of your time without worrying about getting lost.

Depending on your mood, there are several ways to visit the Sierra Madre Mountains.

The Puerto Vallarta Jungle Hike is the perfect family-friendly activity that includes roundtrip transportation and a hike to Palo Maria Waterfall and other interesting wilderness sites. Check rates here .

If you want something a little more adventurous, try an ATV tour. The ATV or RZR Bridge Experience includes a ride across Jorullo Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Latin America.

Mascota is a beautiful mountain town in the state of Jalisco, conveniently located between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

It’s at a high elevation, around 4,000 ft (1,200 meters) above sea level, so the climate is very cool compared to coastal cities and towns.

Mascota is a beautiful, picturesque town with old cobblestone streets and a fascinating unfinished Temple of the Precious Blood near the center. In addition, there are tons of other activities.

There are a few hiking trails nearby, and it’s a popular place for horseback riding, kayaking around the lagoon, boat tours, and fishing.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Mascota

Los Arcos National Park, a protected marine park since 1984, is located between Las Gemelas and Mismaloya Beach in Banderas Bay.

Los Arcos National Marine Park in Mexico near Puerto Vallarta

The marine reserve is known for its natural beauty, lively marine life, and beautiful coral reefs. Because of this, it’s a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and sightseeing. You’ll even have a chance to swim with many different sea creatures, including sea turtles, tropical fish, and rays.

The national park gets its name from the granite arches that rise out of the water. There are also caves, deep tunnels, and no shortage of coral reefs.

You can see the islands from Puerto Vallarta, but taking a day trip from Puerto Vallarta is highly recommended for a better view and time for swimming.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Los Arcos National Park

Los Arcos was once connected to the coast of Mexico, but erosion over time has left five small, rocky islands.

If you want to get as close as possible, you can take a bus or taxi from downtown Puerto Vallarta to Mismaloya Beach. This secluded beach is right in front of the arches and has some great snorkeling.

However, I’d recommend a boat tour to Los Arcos itself because you’ll get much closer to the arches and have a better chance of seeing more ocean dwellers.

This Luxury Yacht & Snorkeling is the perfect family-friendly option for those who want to get right up to the arches for the best snorkeling while traveling in comfort and bliss. Check rates here .

Tequila is a small pueblo magico (Magic Town) in the state of Jalisco. As you may have guessed, it’s where the drink, Tequila, comes from.

So, if you’re looking for the most authentic tequila tasting and the opportunity to learn about this beverage, Tequila is the place to go.

The little town is surrounded by agave fields, the key ingredient in tequila. It’s the best place to learn about tequila’s history and production and sample different flavors.

The town also has a small local market, where you can pick up more samples of local dishes and other foods and fruits.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Tequila

The town of Tequila is a little further away than other day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Because Tequila just passed Guadalajara, you can combine this trip with the city.

If you’re driving, it takes around four hours each way. For most of the trip, you’ll drive along Highway 200 and continue for about an hour past Guadalajara. It’s best to leave early in the morning or stay overnight for plenty of time to explore and learn in Tequila.

There’s no direct bus from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila. Instead, you can take a bus to Guadalajara and another to Tequila.

Visiting Ancient Ruins Near Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the few regions in Mexico that Aztecs or Mayans did not inhabit, so there are no pyramids here.

If you want to see pyramids, the Riviera Maya are highly recommended. Or, you can head over to Mexico City to visit Teotihuacan or Cholula ruins.

That being said, there’s still a lot of cultural heritage near Puerto Vallarta left by the other indigenous. The best way to learn more about this region’s cultural significance and fascinating history is by taking a day trip to the small, historic towns around Puerto Vallarta.

Punta Mita, San Sebastian, San Pancho, and Sayulita are four culturally significant towns near Puerto Vallarta. In the following sections, I’ll review each of these towns, how to get there, and popular attractions.

Punta de Mita

Punta de Mita is a small town about 40 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. It’s known for its secluded beaches, luxury resorts, fresh seafood, and world-class restaurants.

But Punta Mita is so much more than its beautiful beaches; it’s also home to the “shooting tomb” or “tumbo de tiro” in Spanish. When the site was first uncovered, archeologists found human remains, ceramics, and utensils that dated back to the Classic Period.

Shooting tombs are believed to be ancient burial grounds for indigenous people who lived in the region.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Punta de Mita

Distance: 20 miles

Punta Mita is just north of Puerto Vallarta. The easiest way to get there is with your own car or with a shared van.

To get there with your car, head north of Puerto Vallarta, following the main road and staying along the coast.

San Sebastian del Oeste

San Sebastion del Oeste is another must-see small town near Puerto Vallarta, especially if you’re interested in learning more about the history and culture of the region while escaping the beach for a little bit.

Unlike most popular spots near Puerto Vallarta, San Sebastian del Oeste is nestled high in the Sierra Madre region.

Downtown San Sebastian is like stepping back in time, with a beautiful central square paved with cobblestone streets and lined with small shops.

There’s so much to do here, from learning about the region’s rich history to hiking to some beautiful vistas to trying local cuisine and talking with a friendly local family.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to San Sebastian del Oeste

Distance: 40 miles

San Sebastian is not too far from Puerto Vallarta, making it an easy day trip.

There are several buses from Puerto Vallarta to San Sebastian, or you can even take a taxi or an Uber there. It might be more challenging to catch a ride back, as significantly fewer taxis are around, but not impossible.

The easiest way to get to San Sebastian is with a guided tour. You’ll have all the transportation taken care of and be with a designated guide who can explain the cultural significance of the town.

This San Sebastian del Oeste day trip from Puerto Vallarta is the perfect tour that includes roundtrip transportation, lunch, beverages, a stop at the colonial buildings and churches, and a trip to some scenic viewpoints. Check rates here .

San Pancho is a small town in the Mexican state of Riviera Nayarit. It has a small, beautiful beach, a quiet downtown area with rows of artisan stalls, fresh seafood, and beachside restaurants.

Although you need just a day for this little Mexican town, visiting San Pancho is easily one of the best things to do on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. It’s off the beaten path and delivers more of a local experience than anything.

A lush jungle, tropical birds, and the overall beauty of the Peninsula North surround the little town.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho

Distance: 26 miles

San Pancho is a small village close to another popular tourist destination, Sayulita.

Driving from Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho takes about an hour, and a day trip to Sayulita can easily be incorporated into your itinerary.

There are local buses from Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho, or you can take a taxi or private transfer from anywhere in Puerto Vallarta.

If you’re driving from Puerto Vallarta, you can easily find Google Maps directions for this quick trip. Just make sure you save the directions for offline mode, as reception can sometimes be spotty on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

Tour to the Magical Town of Sayulita and San Pancho is an excellent way to travel to both Pueblo magicos (magic towns).

The tour includes roundtrip transportation, time to explore and shop around the cobblestone streets in both towns, and plenty of time to relax on the beach. Check rates here .

Sayulita is a small fishing village well-known for its incredible surfing, friendly local families, good street food, and much more.

This little beach town has a very laid-back vibe. Its gorgeous beaches are much less crowded than those near the Puerto Vallarta pier. This town is also an excellent spot for surfing.

With its stunning beaches, Sayulita has long been considered a hidden gem on the Pacific Coast. Still, it has become a popular tourist destination for locals and foreigners in recent years.

Either way, it’s worth the trip to explore the town, eat fresh seafood, and enjoy a quiet beach.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

Distance: 24 miles

Sayulita is only about 25 miles (38 km) from Puerto Vallarta, and it’s easy to get there.

The cheapest way to get to Sayulita is by public bus. Several local buses leave from downtown Puerto Vallarta and even the airport.

Because the trip is pretty quick, you can also take a taxi, Uber, or drive yourself. In this case, you would exit the city and pass Buscarias. There are several signs along the way pointing you in the right direction.

Just know that there are no grocery stores in Sayulita, so if you decide to stay overnight and want to bring anything, stop at one of a Chedraui, Walmart, or Mega along the way.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting there, several tour groups offer this day trip.

From Puerto Vallarta: San Pancho and Sayulita is one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta and includes a stop in Sayulita and San Pancho.

Roundtrip transportation, free time to explore the colorful streets of San Pancho, and time on the little surfer beach in Sayulita. Check rates here .

Vallarta Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for something fun and unique in Puerto Vallarta but don’t feel like venturing too far from the city, you must check out the Vallarta Botanical Gardens.

The gardens are incredible and possibly one of the best botanical gardens in Mexico. You can tour the gardens full of local plants and fauna, learn about how some plant species grow, and even dine on authentic Mexican cuisine.

This is an excellent activity for children, as they can learn more about the plants and local species while getting a short break from the sand and sun.

You only need a few hours at Vallarta Botanical Gardens, so you’ll have some extra time to explore the Cuale River near the romantic zone in Puerto Vallarta or any other activities that catch your attention near downtown and Old Town.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Distance: 15 miles

Vallarta Botanical Gardens is only 30 minutes from Old Town Puerto Vallarta or the romantic zone.

You can take a bus, taxi, or Uber there.

It’s right off the only highway going south of Puerto Vallarta. It’s located at Km 200, Carretera Puerto Vallarta a Barra de Navidad.

Puerto Vallarta Boat Trips

If you’re ready to leave the main beach, get off those comfortable beach chairs, and explore more of the Pacific Ocean, you must try one of the many boat trips to Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding waters.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic sunset cruise, a thrilling snorkeling tour, a whale-watching tour, or a simple boat ride around the Pacific, there’s something here for you.

Puerto Vallarta: Rhythms of the Night Cruise & Dinner Show is an enjoyable sunset trip with a delicious buffet-style dinner and an immersive show for people of all ages.

The boat trip takes you around the ocean right around sunset and continues by candlelight with an enchanting acrobatic show. Check rates here .

Vallarta: Yelapa Waterfall & Majahuitas Snorkel Adventure is a different type of adventure that’s equally fun. You’ll visit a hidden waterfall, have a few hours for snorkeling and maybe even swimming with sea turtles, and soak in the views of two picturesque coves near Puerto Vallarta.

The tour also offers paddle boarding, kayaking, and other fun water activities. Check rates here .

When you’re in Yelapa, make sure to visit the infamous Pie Lady. She’s right on the beach and known for her interesting banana cream pies.

Puerto Vallarta: Las Caletas Beach Hideaway Experience is another great boar ride, complete with a hidden beach, jungle-clad mountains backdrop, and other fun activities.

While there’s a lot to do on this tour, the hidden beach is by far the highlight. You can only access the hidden beach by boat, and it’s equipped with swaying hammocks, a row of natural palm trees, and beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains. Check rates here .

Whichever boat tour you decide on, you won’t be disappointed. After all, the incredible marine life and the beautiful ocean are really what’s making Puerto Vallarta one of the most popular destinations in all of Mexico.

12 Best Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

Sharing is caring!

Whether you’ve been to Puerto Vallarta every year for decades or this is your first trip to this beautiful Mexican beach town, there are so many day trips from Puerto Vallarta to explore.

If it’s your first trip to this region of Mexico, you’ll no doubt want to spend most of your time getting to know all of the fun things to do in Puerto Vallarta and exploring the local best beaches in Puerto Vallarta .

But if you have more time here, a day trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Romantic Zone or Hotel Zone is a fun way to get to know more about this stunning coastline.

Best Way to Explore Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

The best way to get out of Puerto Vallarta to explore tends to be with your own wheels. If you are happy to drive in Mexico, then consider renting a car from somewhere like Mex Rent a Car or Gecko Car Rentals.

Both offer full coverage and excellent service and you can pick it up and drop it off at the Puerto Vallarta airport, making the whole trip seemless.

While having your own car makes most of these Puerto Vallarta day trips easier, it is possible to explore using public transportation, by hiring a driver for the day, or by taking a group tour.

The bus network around Puerto Vallarta is pretty great, especially for visiting the beach towns to the south. And it only costs 10 Pesos (about 50 cents US) for each local trip.

Where possible, I have listed group tours that make the day easy and fun.

Best Puerto Vallarta Day Trips

Most of these fun Puerto Vallarta day trips offer unique ways to get out on the water or explore other nearby beach towns.

colorful flags over the top of a cobbled street with small shops on both sides.

Sayulita is a popular place to explore and for good reason, it is a beautiful place!

1. Sayulita

This is without a doubt one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita is easy if you have a car. It takes about 45 minutes to drive along highway 200 (which is hardly a highway, especially once you get past Bucerias).

There are so many great things to do in Sayulita . You could easily spend a few days based here exploring the beaches and all of the restaurants in Sayulita .

This is the place to come near Puerto Vallarta if you want to learn to surf. There are local surf schools like Sayulita Surf School or Lunazul Surf School where you can take lessons or rent boards for the day.

Afterward, head for beers at Yambak and enjoy delicious pastor tacos at Tacos Diaz.

If you are planning to drive to Sayulita, be sure to arrive as early as possible. Parking can be a bit of a problem during peak times around December and January. It’s not impossible, but you’ll have to find a quiet side street and walk into town or pay for town center parking located near the beach.

If you don’t want to drive from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita, you can take the bus, take an Uber, or head here for the day with a tour.

There are tons of tour options from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita for the day. Depending on how you want to spend your day you can opt for one of these options:

  • Food and Walking Tour
  • Beach Tour including Sayulita and San Pancho
  • Sayulita tour with Guide and Tequila Tasting

2. Bucerías

Bucerías is personally one of my favorite beaches near Puerto Vallarta.

If you want to find a beach where you can spread out for the day, that has calm waters for swimming or floating, and is within walking distance of tons of great food, then add Bucerías to your Puerto Vallarta day trips list.

The beach in Bucerías is five miles long. Which means regardless of how busy it gets, there is still plenty of space to relax.

There are a few food and souvenir vendors who walk up and down the beach to sell you things, but it’s not an overwhelming amount and sometimes it’s nice to be able to have a drink or a donut without having to get up, isn’t it?

A few blocks from the sand are tons of great Bucerías restaurants including my personal favorites, Tacos Junior for pastor tacos and Lamara for ceviche.

Bucerías is one of the easiest day trips from Puerto Vallarta. There is tons of free street parking available, so you don’t have to worry about it getting too busy. You can also easily take the bus here from this Sam’s Club bus stop and be here in under an hour.

sunset over the beach with a few people swimming in the ocean.

If you get the chance to stay in Bucerias until sunset, I highly recommend doing it. The sunsets here are some of the best.

3. Boca de Tomatlan

Boca de Tomatlan is a small fishing village located about 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta.

I highly recommend taking the bus here from the Romantic Zone. The town is very small and parking is quite limited, especially during peak travel months.

If you are visiting off-peak in October or November or in late spring, you’ll find parking along the river without a problem.

The bus leaves from this bus stop in the Romantic Zone and it terminates in Boca de Tomatlan, so you won’t have any problems getting off at the right stop.

The main draw to Boca de Tomatlan is to take boat trips out to other places. But it is worth spending some time here for the great beachfront restaurants.

This is a no-fuss place where you can grab plastic seat at a plastic table and eat some of the most delicious and affordable seafood in entire region. El Huachinango is my personal favorite spot for their whole grilled snapper.

If you want to do some exploring here on your day trip from Puerto Vallarta, cross the river and walk along the coastal trail to small quiet beaches like Colomitos and Playa Caballo .

beach with some rocks and mountains in the background with clouds above.

The best beaches near Puerto Vallarta require a little bit of work to get to, but they are well worth it.

4. Playa las Animas

There are a couple of ways to get to Playa las Animas from Puerto Vallarta, but driving is not one of those ways.

The only way to access Playa las Animas is to take a boat there or to walk there.

If you want to spend the day hiking along some of the most breathtaking coastline in the region, then get yourself to Boca de Tomatlan as suggested above. Then follow the coastal trail all the way to Playa las Animas.

It is about a 2-hour walk if you stop a bit to drink water and take photos. You can also stop at any of the beaches along the way for a swim or to relax for a while.

Playa las Animas has tons of restaurants and bars along the sand where you can eat lunch, drink ice cold Pacificos or margaritas, and relax in the shade of their umbrellas and lounge chairs.

Then you can either hike back or take a water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlan.

If you don’t want to hike, you can take a water taxi each way. Once you arrive in Boca de Tomatlan you will see tons of small boats near the beach. Most people will offer you a trip before you even have to ask. It should cost roughly 100 Pesos each way (about $5 USD).

There are tour options available for visiting Las Animas as well.

If you want to take a boat directly from Puerto Vallarta without dealing with any buses, you can enjoy a boat trip like this one which is private for up to 8 people. You’ll visit sites like Los Arcos, be able to go snorkeling, and then stop for lunch at Las Animas. Book that tour here .

If you want to do the hike, but you are traveling solo or you simply want to explore it with a knowledgeable guide and other likeminded travelers, this group tour offers the full hiking experience all the way to Las Animas.

5. Los Arcos

Los Arcos is, as the name suggests, a rocky outcrop where there is an arch naturally created by coastal erosion. The area is best known for its snorkeling and is a wonderful day trip from Puerto Vallarta.

The best way to experience Los Arcos is on a boat tour. The boat tours usually start in Puerto Vallarta and take you out to the rocky islands where you can go swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking. They usually include lunch or drinks and snacks and some even stop at nearby islands like Colomitos or Las Animas.

These are some of the best Los Arcos tours that we recommend:

  • Snorkeling Tour : This tour will start in Puerto Vallarta where you’ll meet your guide and take the bus together to Mismaloya. From Mismaloya, you’ll hop on a boat and explore Los Arcos, go snorkeling, learn about the history of the islands, and also get to know the bird life that calls this sanctuary home. This is the best overall experience option. Book that tour here .
  • Kayak and Sunset Tour : This kayak tour starts in Mismaloya, so you will have to get yourself there via bus or Uber. From here you’ll hop on some kayaks and explore Los Arcos while watching the sunset. After the sun has gone down you will head to a bioluminescent spot where your paddles with light up the water. Book that tour here .
  • Private Tour Option : If you are traveling with a large group, be it your family or a group of friends, then a private tour may be your best option. You pay for the boat for the day and then make a personal schedule with the crew which can include stopping at some of the popular nearby beaches before going snorkeling at Los Arcos. Book a private tour here .

If you don’t want to take a group tour and you feel like your Spanish is a decent level, you can get yourself to Mismaloya (by boat or Uber as mentioned above) and simply inquire with the local boats for a trip out to the arches. This will be the cheapest way to explore Los Arcos.

whale breeching out of the water in puerto vallarta mexico

Seeing whales up close is such a special experience.

6. Whale Watching

Like visiting Los Arcos, the only real way to get out and go whale watching is to take a tour. Whether you have gone whale watching before or not, seeing these animals up close never gets old (at least not for me).

I have been whale watching in Cabo San Lucas , San Jose del Cabo , La Paz , and a few times in Puerto Vallarta. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a whale breeching out of the water. Of watching the fins wave to you from shore or from a nearby boat.

The best time to see whales in Puerto Vallarta is between December and March. You will almost definitely see whales if you head out between late December and early Febraury.

Of course, they can never guarantee it, but I have never not seen whales when heading out at this time of year. In fact, you can even see them from the shore easily at this time of year.

There are so many different companies to go whale watching with because it is such a popular day trip from Puerto Vallarta. If you don’t want to book in advance, you’ll find a lot of tour operators around the Romantic Zone or if staying at at resort, you can usually book through the concierge service.

These are my top picks for the best whale watching day trips from Puerto Vallarta:

  • Catamaran Cruise : This is a four hour boat trip, which is one of the longest options available making it a true day out on the water. You will leave on the Catamaran from Puerto Vallarta and tour the bay while having coffee and breakfast. Then you’ll head out in search of whales. The tour will not only look for whales but also dolphins and other marine life in the area. There is a marine biologist on board to explain the migration patterns and answer any questions you have. Lunch as well as drinks are included before you head back to Puerto Vallarta. Book that tour here .
  • EcoTour : This option is fantastic for those that really want to learn more about the migratory whales that you will spot during the boat tour. On board will be biologists and a tour leader. Snacks and drinks are included and the tour lasts for about 3.5 hours. Part of your booking fee goes towards a humpback whale research project which you’ll learn more about on your tour. Book the ecotour option here .
  • Whale Watching on a Mega Yacht : If you want to explore the Bay of Banderas on a stunning luxurious super yacht with a few beers or cocktails in hand, this is the option for you. This isn’t the best option for families, but if you want to have a bit of a sunset whale watching day out, this is a great option. Book the mega yacht tour here .

7. Botanical Gardens

Located to the south of Puerto Vallarta, the Botanical Gardens are a fun day trip from Puerto Vallarta where you can learn more about the native flora and wander through this peaceful oasis.

To get here, you can take the bus from this bus stop which usually says El Tuito on the window. Sometimes it will also say Jardin Botanico on there, but not always. Tell them you want to go to the Botanical Gardens. Bus tickets on this bus cost about 50 Pesos. The bus runs roughly every 30 minutes.

The alternative option is to take the same buses to get to Boca del Tomatlan which are mentioned in #3 of this list. From Boca de Tomatlan you can take a taxi to the botanical gardens and then opt to take the bus back.

Entry is currently 300 Pesos per person (about $17 USD). Check out the website of the Botanical Gardens to learn more about opening times and what you will be able to see.

dusty beach town with pink building and a bicycle with a palapa umbrella over it.

Some of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta are to the small unknown towns like Yelapa, San Pancho, or others that you spot along the way.

Yelapa is one of the most popular Puerto Vallarta day trips that you can do. It has become so popular in fact, that many people are opting to spend several days in this isolated beach with a few small guesthouses available.

You get to Yelapa in much the same way you get to Las Animas except that you can’t walk to Yelapa. You can only access this slice of paradise by taking a boat.

To explore Yelapa as a day trip from Puerto Vallarta, take the bus to Boca de Tomatlan. Head over to the pier where all of the boats and their captains are waiting and tell them you want to go to Yelapa.

Pay the captain once you are on the boat, there is no need to pay for a ticket before you get on (this is something of a scam to get you to overpay). It should cost about 150-200 Pesos (under $12 USD). Be sure you have Pesos, not US dollars and make sure you have enough to get you back as well. There are no ATMS in either of these towns.

Once in Yelapa you have the option to simply enjoy the quiet beach where you can relax and eat delicious seafood when you get hungry. Or you can get out and explore the nearby trails and waterfalls.

There are two waterfalls that are relatively easy to reach from the beach in Yelapa. Follow the signs for  cascada or waterfall. This is a helpful guide to get you on the right track for visiting both.

Needless to say, pack your swimsuit, comfortable and waterproof walking sandals, and a quick dry towel.

beach with lush green trees and a pier sticking out into the water in punta mita, one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Explore the beaches of Punta Mita, head out surfing, or get on a boat to go scuba diving nearby.

9. San Pancho

San Pancho is the quieter, lesser known neighbor to the popular Pueblo Magico of Sayulita.

About an hour from Puerto Vallarta, San Pancho is the place to come to get away from the crowds but without the work required to get to Yelapa or Las Animas. You can simply hop in a rental car and drive straight to San Pancho. You’ll easily find a parking spot and then walk straight to the beach.

The beach here is wonderful for relaxing and the water is nice and calm for swimming. There are cute boutiques for shopping along the main street. There are also some great places to grab food, especially the street cart of Ceviche Girael .

If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can take a tour like this one which includes a stop in both Sayulita and San Pancho.

Spend your days exploring the cool day trips from Puerto Vallarta and come back in time to watch sunset over Los Muertos Beach.

10. San Sebastian del Oeste

The only day trip from Puerto Vallarta that doesn’t include a stop at the beach. San Sebastian del Oeste is actually not near the coast at all. You’ll head inland to visit this popular Jalisco Magic Town that is battling to keep its culture alive.

The stunning brick buildings of San Sebastian del Oeste are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and should not be missed on your trip here. Another popular thing to do here is explore the coffee plantations where you can see the coffee growing and then sample some freshly roasted brews.

Another thing to do while in San Sebastian is hike up to La Bufa. This viewpoint offers incredible views back over the town. Take it easy if you aren’t used to higher altitudes because you’ll have a bit less oxygen than at sea level. San Sebastian sits at about 4,500 feet (about 1300 meters).

The best way to get here is to drive yourself. It takes about an hour and a half each way and the road can be windy, so take your time and stop along the way at some cute local towns.

If you would prefer to leave the driving to someone else, you can g o on a guided tour like this one . It includes a knowledgeable bilingual guide, a stop at a local coffee plantation, lunch at a local restaurant, and free time to spend wandering the town. Book that tour here .

11. Punta Mita

Located in the Riviera Nayarit , this little peninsula has been made popular by the rich and famous. It is packed with luxury resorts and exclusive golf resorts. But it is also home to stunning beaches, great waves for surfing, and cute little towns with delicious food.

If you have a rental car, you can explore the little beaches that dot the coastline here like Playa la Lancha or Palito Verde. If you get hungry, you don’t want to miss ceviche and fish tacos at Cevicheria La Cruz located on the road back to Puerto Vallarta.

One of the things that makes this a great day trip is if you pair it with a trip to number 12.

woman sitting on a boat with a rock structure in the water behind her at islas marietas, mexico, one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

A boat trip out to Islas Marietas is an absolute must when visiting Puerto Vallarta.

12. Islas Marietas

Islas Marietas is a marine reserve that is home to sea lions, tons of bird life including blue footed boobies, as well as a plethora of underwater life waiting to be explored.

You can visit Islas Marietas on a snorkeling tour, or if you want to really get beneath the surface, you can go diving here. Besides in Cabo Pulmo, the diving here is some of my favorite in all of Mexico.

Punta Mita Expeditions leave right from the main pier in Punta Mita and will take you out to Islas Marietas to dive around the stunning marine life here. You can also opt to snorkel if you would prefer.

If you want to visit Islas Marietas from Puerto Vallarta with a tour, this boat tour is a great option . It includes paddle boards and kayaks to use to explore around the islands. You will also have access to snorkeling gear and there will be a guide with you to help you learn more about this magical set of volcanic islands.

Venturing out beyond Puerto Vallarta 's tourist center pays big rewards. In fact, some of the most worthwhile outdoor experiences await in the city's surrounding areas. After all, we're talking about snorkeling in sublime jungle-backed coves, unwinding in green getaways nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains and exploring uninhabited islands teeming with wildlife. Here are five of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

La Playa Escondida Islas Marietas Puerto Vallarta

Islas Marietas

Designated as a national marine park and Unesco biosphere reserve, these uninhabited islands 22 miles (36km) west of Puerto Vallarta provide some of the best wildlife-watching opportunities on Banderas Bay. Here snorkelers and divers can marvel at giant mantas and sea turtles as they glide through clear waters, while on land you can spot the blue-footed booby and some 90 other bird species.

And just wait until you lay your eyes on Playa del Amor, an astonishing underground crater beach. As a measure to protect Marietas from overtourism, access to Playa del Amor is limited to only 116 daily visitors. Actually, all excursions to the islands, regardless of whether you are lucky enough to score the coveted Playa del Amor permit, must by arranged with a certified tour outfit, so plan ahead.

How to get to Islas Marietas: Ecotours de México is a reputable company with guided outings led by naturalists. Tour operators specify on their websites that they cannot guarantee access to Playa del Amor until the day of the visit but you can still enjoy a memorable day of snorkeling and wildlife-watching.

Check the latest guidance in Puerto Vallarta  before planning a trip, and always follow local government health advice.

San Sebastián del Oeste

For a dramatic change of scenery from the coast, head inland for the cool climes of San Sebastián del Oeste , a centuries-old mining town perched 4855ft (1480m) above sea level. Half the fun is getting there as you make stops along a winding mountain road at Panadería Carmen, an artisan bakery with highly addictive pastries; Hacienda Jalisco, a fascinating former silver hacienda; and Hacienda Don Lalín, a family-run distillery that produces organic raicilla (a mezcal-like agave drink).

San Sebastián's population of about 5600 makes it the ideal spot to social distance, and if you embrace hiking, bird-watching and the underrated art of doing nothing, it's definitely calling your name. For an overnight stay, colonial-style hotel Mansion Real provides comfy rooms in the heart of the small historic center.

How to get to San Sebastián del Oeste: by private car it's about one hour and 50 minutes east of Vallarta. Alternatively, you can leave the driving to Vallarta Adventures on a informative and fun-filled guided excursion.

Jardín Botánico de Vallarta

Set in the verdant Sierra Madre mountains, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens ' beautifully-curated grounds are home to a wide array of native plant species and it boasts one of Mexico's top orchid collections. After taking a stroll along manicured paths lined with bromeliads, agaves and wild palms, make your way down a jungle trail to the tranquil shores of Río Horcones and have a refreshing swim in a river that flows past large boulders.

On your way back to Puerto Vallarta, make it a point to stop in fishing village Boca de Tomatlán to access a coastal trail that leads to a series of secluded coves and beaches. The scenic Colomitos cove is only about a half-mile (1km) away from the trailhead and the path continues as far west as Playa Quimixto if you're up for exploring more of this inviting emerald coastline.

How to get to Jardín Botánico de Vallarta: by car, the gardens are a 40-minute ride south of downtown. Or take an 'El Tuito' bus departing from the corner of Carranza and Aguacate (in Zona Romántica) to reach both Boca de Tomatlán (30 minutes) and the botanical gardens.

500pxRF_89987001.jpg

Sayulita & San Pancho

Offering a respite from the hubbub and high-rise hotels of downtown Vallarta, the neighboring beach towns of Sayulita and San Francisco (aka San Pancho) have more than enough activities to keep even the most restless of kids (and adults) entertained. The rideable breaks in Sayulita, about 25 miles (40km) north of Vallarta, make it the perfect spot to learn surfing, while kayaking, horseback-riding and turtle releases are always a hit with families.

Up the coast about four miles (7km), San Pancho draws smaller crowds than Sayulita, giving it a more low-key surf town vibe. On the return to Vallarta consider making a detour in Punta de Mita, a scenic peninsula where you can delight in scrumptious seafood at oceanfront restaurant Tuna Blanca .

How to get to Sayulita and San Pancho: buses operate frequently from a stop in front of Puerto Vallarta's Walmart (opposite the cruise ship port). Some buses will leave you at the highway turnoff, so you may have to walk or cab it into the towns. By car, you can reach Sayulita and nearby San Pancho in about one hour and 30 minutes.

Boats from above, while parasailing

Playa Majahuitas & Playa El Caballo

A trip to Vallarta wouldn't be complete without visiting a series of southern beaches that hug a glorious coastline backed by jungle-shrouded mountains. For the ultimate in carefree beach-bumming, head for the golden sands of Playa El Caballo and plop down under a rustling palm tree with that book you've been meaning to read.

If you're up for some snorkeling, make your way over to the clear jade-green waters of Playa Majahuitas, a serene cove where you can duck into small caves as you swim among the parrotfish and angelfish. Majahuitas and Playa El Caballo stand out as two of the most restful spots along this coast when compared to the relatively busier beaches of Yelapa, Quimixto and Playa Las Ánimas .

How to get to Playa Majahuitas and Playa El Caballo: both beaches can be reached in 30 to 40 minutes by water taxis departing from the Zona Romántica's Playa de los Muertos pier. Playa El Caballo is a short walk east from Playa Las Ánimas. You can also access Playa El Caballo by hiking west along a coastal trail approached from Boca de Tomatlán (a fishing village about 30 minutes south of Vallarta).

My Flying Leap

The 11 Top Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Please share if you enjoy this content!

As amazing as Puerto Vallarta is, make sure to take some time when you visit for some of these top day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most visited places in Mexico and for many good reasons! You have the stunning beaches on one side and the magnificent Sierra Madre mountains on the other. Heaven!

The area is a great mix of tourists, locals, and ex-pats. Some people you’ll meet in PV are visitors, while others are digital nomads who have been living in the area for years. It’s a popular ex-pat hotspot.

No matter your reason for visiting Puerto Vallarta, make sure you carve out time in your schedule to take a few day trips. Most of the trips listed in the guide are two hours away or less!

You can easily even take a few half-day trips to be back in Puerto Vallarta before the evening nightlife begins. Here are my top recommendations for Puerto Vallarta day trips and the best places to see in the area!

Here are some of the top day trips you can take from PV:

  • Swim in the turquoise water in Yelapa .
  • Experience the beauty of the hidden beach at Isla Marietas .
  • Get your adrenaline going by hiking parts of the Sierra Madre Mountains .
  • Go surfing in Sayulita or San Pancho .
  • Experience tequila tasting in Tequila Town or San Sebastian .
  • Eat some amazing food in La Cruz.
  • Go hiking in Las Caletas.
  • Visit the La Cruz Market for souvenirs and traditional goods.
  • Visit a local beach in Bucerias.

You can take many more day trips, but check out the top eleven below.

Visiting Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, or PV, is one of the best beach getaways. It’s located in the region of Jalisco, right on the Pacific Ocean. You might have heard of the popular large city of Guadalajara. PV is in the same region and a few hours west.

Since it’s right on the coast, you’ll have plenty of chances to hit the beach, snorkel, and swim. Or, if you’re a little more daring, try windsurfing or parasailing.

It’s a large ex-pat town, so you will be able to have all the modern amenities you need with fast internet speeds. You’ll also meet tons of locals.

Once you have explored Puerto Vallarta, you might wonder what Puerto Vallarta day trips are popular for exploring more of Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is a great location, and it’s easy to get to other cities and popular attractions.

Here is what you need to know about the incredible day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

1. Yelapa

If you’ve been in Puerto Vallarta for a few days and want to escape being in the city, head to Yelapa. You can only get there by boat, making it an amazing way to get out onto the water and enjoy marine life.

You can catch the boat from the south side of the Zona Romantica. It only costs a few dollars.

Yelapa is an extremely laid-back little village. It’s also very remote with soft white sand and crystal clear blue water. If you’re looking for a little area of paradise not far from PV, this is where it’s at!

Explore the little downtown part of the village before heading to the beach or the water. There are many places to eat and small vendors where you can buy locally-made crafts.

Most visitors to Yelapa go to Playa Isabel to swim. The water is shallow, and there are no jagged rocks. It’s a great place for beginner swimmers or for kids as well!

Want a small group tour where you’ll get picked up in Puerto Vallarta? Check out this tour to Yelapa .

2. Isla Marietas and Hidden Beach

Isla Marietas is a group of beautiful islands off the coast of Puerto Vallarta. The Mexican government works hard to protect the islands and keep them preserved. So, not all of them are open to tourists.

The most visited island is Playa Escondida . It has turquoise waters and a small beach surrounded by rock walls.

If you are interested in marine life, I highly recommend bringing your snorkeling gear to Isla Marietas. Because of the near-perfect preservation, the fish are teeming. You can swim right alongside them.

There is also a chance you will see whales, dolphins, and turtles.

3. Sierra Madre

When you think of Mexico, you probably think of beaches and sunshine. Mexico has huge diversity when it comes to landscapes, though, with some gorgeous mountain ranges like the Sierra Madre.

Heading to the Sierra Madre mountains allows you to explore more than just the coast. The Sierra Madre is also perfect for those looking to get some adventure and activity into their itinerary.

From hiking to mountain biking to water rafting, you can get your adrenaline pumping in Sierra Madre. You can also book a tour to see one of the many historical villages or cultural sites hidden within the mountains and nearby jungles.

Interested in exploring by horse or ATV ? Check these out!

4. San Pancho

San Pancho is another great beach town about an hour away from Puerto Vallarta. The main difference is that San Pancho is way better for surfing than the other beach spots. Since there is only the beach plus a few restaurants and shops, San Pancho is a great relaxing day trip to just surf and enjoy the sun without a crowd.

Check out the surf shops, including Pancho Vida and Nativa Surf Shop , to buy some gear or souvenirs to take home.

The water conditions make San Pancho better for those with some surfing experience. Since San Pancho is small, there aren’t many opportunities to get lessons, unlike the other major surf towns near Puerto Vallarta.

5. Sayulita

Sayulita is about 35 minutes from Puerto Vallarta, so you can easily make this a half-day trip since it’s so close. Sayulita is a large ex-pat town with plenty of things to see and do. Some people spend a night or two here to ensure they have enough time to see everything.

Unlike San Pancho, Sayulita is better for beginner surfers. There are also many surf schools, including Lunazal Surf Shop & School and Surf’n Sayulita. Both are highly rated and offer lessons and gear rentals for beginners.

Or, check out these great surfing lessons in PV !

If you feel like exercising, hike to the top of Monkey Mountain. The top has some of the best views of the beach and the city below. The hike is a little tricky in some spots but is still suitable for beginner hikers and older children.

Sayulita is also one of the top spots for yoga. You’ll see many ex-pats carrying around their yoga mats and even doing classes on the beach and in the park. For formal classes, check out Paraiso Yoga.

6. San Sebastian

If you want to see some of Mexico’s rich history and get away from the coast for a day, head to San Sebastian. It’s an old historic town built in the 1700s. The narrow streets are filled with small bakeries and coffee shops, perfect for relaxing in.

There is plenty to do in San Sebastian, and much more than just walking around and seeing the cool architecture.

La Quinta is a great place to grab organic coffee. They also do tours of the plantation if you want to know more about how coffee is grown, planted, and processed.

If coffee isn’t your thing, you can head to Hacienda Don Lalin Tequila Distillery instead. You don’t have to be a huge tequila drinker either because they have tons of different flavors like pomegranate and cherry that take the edge off sipping straight tequila.

Don Lalin tequila is not available in the United States, so definitely buy some to take home if you find a flavor that you like.

Before heading back to PV, make time to go to the top of La Bufa Hill. It’s just a short hike, or you can book an ATV tour to get to the top.

The observation deck offers amazing views of the city and the mountains. Try going at sunset for the best views and cooler weather.

7. La Cruz

The city of La Cruz is 30 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. It’s small, but it’s known for its farmers’ markets every weekend. At the market, you will also find food stalls with local goodies. You can sit at one of the outdoor tables and eat, and people watch.

The farmers’ market also has handicrafts, fresh produce, and bakery items. Most of them are locally made, so it’s a great way to support the local economy and get something unique to bring home.

Right outside of the town, there’s an amazing beach. Playa Destiladeras is quiet, with shallow water. There’s also a beach club and restaurant if you are looking for some fancier food and great cocktails.

It’s right on the beach so you can enjoy your food and watch the waves roll in.

8. Tequila Town

This famous region for tequila is about a 4-hour trip from Puerto Vallarta. It will definitely be a full-day trip, or you can spend the night. The town is small, but the architecture is amazing. Spend a few hours just walking around and exploring all the local shops and restaurants.

Some of the older buildings are lined with flowers and vines, making them an amazing spot to get pictures.

This region of Mexico is called Tequila Town because agave hills surround it. There are also many tequila distilleries and tasting tours around the area.

Definitely visit Tequila Town if you’re a fan of Jose Cuervo. You can visit the Tequila Jose Cuervo Bar . It would be best if you also made time to stop at Fabrica La Rojena . It’s a distillery with tequila tasting and a margarita bar.

side trips from puerto vallarta

9. Las Caletas

Las Caletas is the place to go if you’re looking for a secluded beach perfect for photos. Many honeymooners and those looking for engagement or family photos come here because of the stunning backdrop.

The nearby jungle also offers some interesting hiking opportunities. You’ll see tons of flowers blooming if you’re around in the spring or early summer.

Many people choose to rent beach chairs or hammocks to lounge in at Las Caletas. You can also go snorkeling or diving if you bring your own gear.

Check out this great tour to Las Caletas from Puerto Vallarta !

10. La Cruz Market

This market is only open from November to April, so if you are coming at other times of the year, you won’t get a chance to visit. There are over 200 vendors that come here to sell a variety of items including food, craft items, jewelry, and art.

All the items are made locally so it’s a great way to support the economy but also to get some cool items to bring home.

After you get your shopping done, there is a marina close by with a few small restaurants. They sell fresh seafood, local beer, and many other food options.

La Cruz Market is located at BAHIA DE BANDE, Marina Riviera Nayarit Marina Rivierta, 63734 Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nay., Mexico . They are currently only open on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm but during some months, they are open on both Saturday and Sunday.

Make sure to check their website before planning to come to the market.

11. Bucerias

This small local beach town is only about 15 minutes from La Cruz Market, so you can easily visit both of these places on the same day.

Bucerias is much smaller than places like PV and Sayulita but it’s quieter and the beach is much cleaner.

The prices here are also much lower since the place is not touristy. It’s the perfect place to relax on the beach, enjoy some good seafood, and enjoy a few beers.

In the small downtown area, you’ll find a few shops and art galleries that you pop into if you have some free time.

How to Get to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a pretty big international airport called Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR). They have daily flights from every state in the U.S.

If you are flying from November through March (high season), you might even find a direct flight, depending on your location.

There are also some flights from major Canadian and European cities, but you will probably have a layover somewhere.

Once you arrive at the airport, I suggest taking a taxi to Puerto Vallarta. Rates are posted, so you don’t have to worry about getting hustled. You can also navigate to the other side of the airport to get an Uber or take the local bus if you are good with directions.

How to Get Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is not big, so you can walk or bike to most places. For the day trips, you will need to catch the bus, take a taxi, or go on a tour. Just make sure to ask the taxi driver the rate BEFORE they start driving, as local taxis do not have meters like the ones at the airport.

I personally do not recommend renting a car and driving. I found driving extremely difficult in Mexico as roads are not well labeled, and other drivers are not very courteous.

You can also find Ubers in Puerto Vallarta. Like many other international cities, Puerto Vallarta also uses InDriver , which is similar to Uber, except you pay in cash.

side trips from puerto vallarta

When to Visit Puerto Vallarta

If you want the best weather, go to PV from November through March. This is considered the high season, so hotel prices will be costly. Expect crowds at the beach and other popular attractions.

July through October is too hot for most people, and it rains almost every afternoon and evening.

Like other Mexican cities, Puerto Vallarta has massive celebrations during Christmas and Holy Week in April. You might want to avoid these times so you don’t encounter large crowds.

Visiting in November before Thanksgiving or after Holy Week in April will give you the best deals on hotels.

Ready for the Best Puerto Vallarta Day Trips?

Puerto Vallarta is a popular coastal town in Mexico where many ex-pats and locals enjoy the sun and beaches. You could easily spend a week or two just exploring Puerto Vallarta, but make sure to add a few extra days to your trip so that you can experience some of the best Puerto Vallarta Day Trips.

Some of the day trips are to nearby beach towns, and some will take you further inland to quaint little cities and tequila distilleries. Experiencing Puerto Vallarta day trips is a great way to learn more about the country’s history and see the diverse landscape.

The Best Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

side trips from puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has beautiful beaches, picturesque cobblestone streets, fantastic dining, and an abundance of shopping opportunities. Still, when you're ready to explore farther afield, you'll find many fun and exciting day trip options. You can visit " magical towns ," explore tranquil fishing villages, discover bohemian beaches or bask in lovely natural scenery. Whether you choose to venture into the Sierra Madre mountains or roam along the coastline, there are many delights you can discover on these Puerto Vallarta day trips.

San Sebastian del Oeste: Magical Mining Town

Frank Fell | Getty Images

High in the forested Sierra Madre, San Sebastian del Oeste was once a famous mining town with over 20,000 inhabitants. Its population is now a fraction of its former size, but the serene atmosphere makes for a wonderful choice for a day trip. Tour a small coffee plantation, photograph the red-tile-roofed buildings and wonderful views, take a peek at the museum by the entrance to the church. The crisp mountain air may provide a welcome respite from Puerto Vallarta’s heat and humidity.

Getting There: There are no direct buses, but you can take the bus to Mascota, get off at La Estancia, and take a taxi from there. Alternatively, drive there in a private car or take an excursion with a tour company such as Vallarta Adventures .

Travel Tip: There are a few good restaurants in town, including Montebello, which serves delicious Italian food, and Jardín Nebulosa , which offers fine Mexican fusion cuisine in a lovely patio setting.

Jorullo Bridge: Amazing Sights and Adrenaline Rushes

 Courtesy Canopy River

Travel three miles from Puerto Vallarta into the Sierra Madre, where you’ll enjoy the beautiful scenery and have the opportunity to get some adrenaline rushes. The 1,550 foot-long Jorullo Bridge is suspended some 500 feet above the Cuale River. Cross on foot or ATV, and enjoy being surrounded by incredible mountain scenery. El Salto waterfall nearby has crystal clear waters, and there’s a spot where you can jump into the falls. There are also opportunities to zip-line or tube down a river. Have lunch at Los Coapinoles open-air restaurant, or go on the weekend for the breakfast buffet.

Getting There: Purchase a tour package through Canopy River for a full day’s worth of activities, or arrange transportation (also through Canopy River) and decide what to do when you get there. Alternatively, you can rent a car and get there on your own.

Travel Tip: There's no shade on the bridge, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat! Once you get across, continue along the path to your right, and you’ll get to a spot where you can enjoy a complimentary drink and more amazing views.

Yelapa: Quiet Fishing Village

Tom Dailey | Getty Images

Yelapa is a small town that has a lovely beach with warm water, gentle waves, and golden sand. Southwest of Puerto Vallarta, it’s accessible only by sea, which adds to its charm. Many visitors don’t explore beyond the beach, but the town itself is fun to explore, with a church and some restaurants and a few handicraft stalls. Enjoy a walk on the beach, take the short hike to Cola de Caballo waterfall, and enjoy a freshly prepared meal at one of the beachside or village restaurants.

Getting There: Take a water taxi from the Puerto Vallarta Marina or the pier on Los Muertos beach. Alternatively, get to Boca de Tomatlan by bus or car, and take a water taxi from there.

Travel Tip: There’s a second waterfall located about an hour’s hike from the beach, that is much less visited. Take note that if you visit towards the end of the dry season, in late winter or spring, the waterfalls may be mostly dry.

Vallarta Botanical Garden: Nature Delights

Courtesy Vallarta Botanical Garden

Spend the day exploring cultivated gardens and conservatories surrounded by lush tropical forests. You’ll see and learn about orchids, rhododendrons, bromeliads, magnolias, and some Mexican plants of worldwide culinary importance such as vanilla and chocolate. You’ll also get to see many interesting butterflies and birds. Take a break from your explorations to enjoy lunch at the Hacienda de Oro restaurant, which has beautiful views and excellent margaritas.

Getting There: Located 15 miles south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, you can get to the botanical garden by private car, taxi or city bus. Catch the bus on the corner of Aguacate and Carranza streets in the Zona Romantica; the bus sign should say “El Tuito." Buses usually run every thirty minutes.

Travel Tip: Take a swimsuit and towel, and you can go for a refreshing swim in the Horcones River after hiking mountain paths.

Las Caletas: Private Beach Paradise

Las Caletas is a beach in a secluded cove on Banderas Bay, south of Puerto Vallarta. Once the home of film director John Huston, Las Caletas is now exclusively run by Vallarta Adventures. Board a boat and enjoy some coffee and a muffin as you make your way south. Once at Las Caletas, take your choice of a number of activities: snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, walking nature paths, a cooking class, spa treatments, and more—or just grab a hammock or lounge chair and relax by the beach, and take a refreshing dip when you need to cool off. This is a fun and relaxed day trip for families that have different ages as all will find something to do.

Getting There: This is a private location, and the only way to get there is by boat on an excursion with Vallarta Adventures: Las Caletas Beach Hideaway .

Travel Tip: There are many activities to choose from, so decide what your priorities are, and do them first if there’s time left over, you can lounge on the beach or in one of the available hammocks.

Sayulita, Nayarit: Bohemian Beach Town

 Jodi Jacobson | Getty Images

A laid-back surfing town north of Puerto Vallarta in Nayarit state, Sayulita is popular among artists, surfers, and hippie types. Shops selling surfing gear, silver jewelry, and leather purses as well as handcrafted items and traditional souvenirs line the streets. Wander around the small town and check out the shops and restaurants. Take the obligatory Instagram pic on Delfines street, which is decorated with strands of colorful papel picado. Rent some surfing gear and ride some waves, or just lay back and enjoy the bohemian scene.

Getting There: Sayulita is located 22 miles north of the Puerto Vallarta airport. You can catch a bus in front of Walmart. It takes about an hour and will leave you at the bus terminal in Sayulita.

Travel Tip: Sayulita’s main beach has a strong surf and tends to get crowded. Take a ten-minute walk west of the main beach along a well-worn path past the cemetery, and you’ll get to Los Muertos Beach. Sheltered between protective rocks, it has gentler waves and fewer people.

El Tuito: Laid-back Pueblo

The capital of Cabo Corrientes municipality, El Tuito, is located in pine-covered hills 30 miles south of Puerto Vallarta. Its elevation of 3,500 feet above sea level means that the climate here is some 10 degrees cooler than Puerto Vallarta. Wander around the town and have a look in the church dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle (the main altar is a boulder), enjoy the bustling central plaza, and peek into some of the small shops selling local products like artisanal cheese and organic coffee as well as the local spirit, raicilla. Then find a spot at a restaurant on the plaza and enjoy the surroundings, the traditional architecture, lush vegetation, and take the opportunity to practice your Spanish with the friendly locals.

Getting There: If you’re an adventurous and experienced cyclist, you could bike there with Puerto Vallarta Cycling, but most visitors go by bus, which you can catch on the corner of Aguacate and Carranza streets in the Zona Romantica. The ride takes about an hour, and buses usually run every thirty minutes. Don’t miss the last bus of the day to Puerto Vallarta! It leaves around 6 p.m.

Travel Tip: Grab a taxi in El Tuito's main square to Hacienda El Divisadero , where you can see how raicilla is made.

Mascota and Talpa: Quiet Mountain Towns

Mark D Callanan | Getty Images

Get some insight into Mexican rural life by visiting two traditional Mexican towns tucked in the Sierra Madre mountains. Mascota has cobblestone streets lined with colonial buildings and adobe homes. Visit the town’s monumental main church, dedicated to the Our Lady of Sorrows that was built between 1780 and 1880, and the unfinished but magnificent Templo de la Sangre de Cristo. Sample some hand-made tortillas fresh off the comal, locally produced sweets and raicilla; the local spirit distilled from the green agave. Nearby Talpa de Allende is another small village, and also a Catholic pilgrimage site, home to one of Mexico’s most revered icons, the Virgin of Rosario Talpa, who is believed to grant miracles. Thousands of pilgrims from throughout Mexico make the journey to the Gothic church to receive the Virgin's blessing. Enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings, including the Volcano de Molcajete.

Getting There: Take a tour with Vallarta Adventures , rent a car, or go by bus. Mascota is located 60 miles southeast from Puerto Vallarta, and Talpa is just a bit farther. Get a bus at the ATM bus terminal on the corner of Lucerna and Havre in Colonia Versalles, the morning departure is at 9 a.m., and return bus leaves from Mascota at 6 p.m.

Travel Tip: Visit La Casa de Piedra, located on the main street in downtown Mascota. Some visitors refer to it as the "Fred Flintstone house” because everything in it is carved out of river rock by its proud owner, Francisco Rodriguez Pena,

Top Puerto Vallarta ATV Tours

#1. private puerto vallarta atv adventure.

side trips from puerto vallarta

⭐️ 5/5 (600+ reviews) | 🕓 3 hours | Check availability here

Of all the ATV tours in Puerto Vallarta, this one has some of the best reviews. It has a perfect 5-star rating on Viator, with over 600 reviews in total, so they must be doing something right!

Xiutla Riders office in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta, which is my personal favorite. Be sure to explore this traditional ‘hood before or after your tour.

They only run private tours, so you won’t be in a huge group waiting for a bunch of people. This tour starts out with a cruise through central PV.

From there, you’ll head up into the mountains. Enjoy the scenery and the fresh mountain air en route to a hidden bar in the Sierra Madre. You can have a drink and snack, take a dip in the river, or just chill out.

What an amazing and fun experience! This may sound corny (hehe), but it was so peaceful, exciting, and we felt like we were on a dream or something as we rode through the streets of Puerto Vallarta and through the small villages (towns) on our way to the jungle! – Pedro (read more reviews here)

They provide you with a helmet, bandana, and goggles to ensure your comfort on the ride. This tour is fine for people with no ATV experience, so beginners are more than welcome to join. Click here to reserve your spot.

#2. Sierra Madre ATV Adventure

⭐️ 5/5 (500+ reviews) | 🕓 3 1/2 hours | Check availability here

It turns out that 5 de Diciembre is a hub for Puerto Vallarta ATV tours, as this one also starts there. It’s a half-day adventure put on by Estigo Tours, and it also has rave reviews.

side trips from puerto vallarta

The tour starts out with a ride-along PV’s famous Malecon. Next up is a cruise along back streets through the outlying villages into the mountains.

There are a couple of stops on this tour where you can buy food and drinks. You can also learn how to make tortillas, and there’s even a free tequila/mezcal tasting.

The guides were great & the views were immaculate! The stop for the tequila tasting was also a BLAST! I purchased food, drinks, & a nice bottle of tequila from there. I would 10/10 do this again! – (read more reviews here)

Just remember that you’re operating heavy machinery, and don’t overdo it! You can buy a bottle to take home and enjoy after the tour. Click here to reserve your spot on this super fun AVT tour in Puerto Vallarta.

#3. Jorullo Bridge Experience

⭐️ 4.5/5 (150+ reviews) | 🕓 5.5 hours | Check availability here

When it comes to ATV tours, this one offers one of the most unique experiences. That’s because you get to drive an ATV (or a RZR) across the epic Jorullo Bridge.

This is the longest suspension bridge in all of Latin America. While crossing it on your ATV, you’ll get to enjoy some incredible panoramic views of the mountains and the river below. Don’t worry – there’s a chance to stop in the middle of the bridge to snap some epic photos .

In addition to the bridge crossing, you also have the chance to ride on dirt roads to a waterfall. It’s the perfect spot to jump in and wash all that dirt off after a big ride.

Fun and friendly staff, great restaurant at the end of the tour. The hanging bridges were cool and not as scary as they seem! The waterfall was refreshing. – Stefany (read more reviews here)

You may notice a trend here as this tour also includes a free tequila tasting. What can I say other than “Viva Mexico?” Click here to read more and book your place.

#4. ATV Zipline Combo Adventure

⭐️ 4.5/5 (60+ reviews) | 🕓 5 hours | Check availability here

side trips from puerto vallarta

For those who want an extra dose of excitement, this 2-in-1 combo tou r is a perfect choice. It’s a half-day adventure that includes an AVT ride as well as several exciting zip lines.

This adrenaline-fueled excursion begins at the Wild Trek office near the airport. You are briefed on the ATVs and safety precautions before heading up into the mountains.

After the exhilarating ATV ride, the fun continues with a course of eight different ziplines. You also have the option to take a short hike to add on four more.

At this point in the post, I don’t even have to tell you what else this tour includes. That’s right – your favorite blu agave-distilled beverage is featured on this adventure as well.

This takes place at a restaurant, where although food is not included, guests of the tour seem to find it worth the extra cost before the trip back to town .

If the zipline is so much fun that you just have to go for more, be sure to check out our post about the best zipline tours in PV !

Great and unique experience staff is super professional they take you step by step, super fun I recommend to anyone going to puerto Vallarta it’s a must! – Viator (read more reviews here)

#5. Jungle Side By Side Adventure

side trips from puerto vallarta

⭐️ 4.5/5 (30+ reviews) | 🕓 3.5 hours | Check availability here

This one is slightly different than the other ATV tours in Puerto Vallarta, as you ride in an open-sided buggy. It’s the same idea, just a slightly different vehicle.

The buggies are nice because they are a bit more shielded from the elements than your traditional ATVs. It’s still an absolute blast ripping down the back mountain roads in one of these bad boys, though.

So much fun!!! The tequila tasting and the authentic Mexican restaurant at the end of the tour were AMAZING. 10/10 would def recommend. Be prepared to get DIRTY!!! 🤣 – (read more reviews here)

This adventure takes you past local villages to a waterfall, where you can swim in a river-fed pool. Then it’s on to an amazing viewpoint high above the Cuale River.

The tour ends with – you guessed it – a tequila tasting! It’s also possible to order lunch at the riverfront restaurant for an extra cost.

A Note About ATV Tours

While these ATV tours are all fun and safe, it’s important to have travel insurance for such outings. Accidents do happen, and you want to be prepared.

Also, I would advise you to not consume any cervezas or margaritas before the tour. As you can see, basically every tour includes a tequila tasting. Save the real partying for when you get back to Zona Romantica .

If you have any questions or comments about these ATV tours, drop us a line in the comments and let us know! Now get out there and have fun and be safe, amigos.
