An inside look at GEODIS Park, new Nashville SC home

nashville sc stadium tour

A shining shrine to soccer now sits high above the Music City, as  GEODIS Park , new home of  Nashville SC , opens for the 2022 season and immediately raises the bar on MLS stadiums in several ways.

With commanding views of the Nashville skyline and the surrounding Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood, the $335-million  GEODIS Park  makes an impact from afar as you approach from any side. We all know a stadium set on a hill cannot be hid, and that certainly goes for an MLS stadium. Seating 30,000, GEODIS Park footprint is substantial, and that capacity represents the largest capacity for a U.S. soccer-specific stadium.

There is nothing soft about this stadium, featuring an industrial design highlighted by black steel and dark woods, with no apparent curves and everything set at an angle. Forget about the graceful curves surrounding the pitch at  Allianz Field  or the curvy exterior, roof and bowl at  TQL Stadium . GEODIS Park features a very angular design, with right angles coming at every corner of the concourse and the exterior. Angled cutouts beckon you at entrances.

This article first appeared in the weekly Soccer Stadium Digest newsletter. Are you a subscriber? Sign up here!

We were there for Opening Day, when Nashville SC Vice President, Communications  Cristina Maillo Belda gave us a tour of the stadium before opening, on a day when all 30,000 seats were accounted for and the attendance was officially reported at 30,019. Despite that large crowd, the concourses (for the most part; we’ll get into that a little later) were not crowded to the point of smothering, and most fans could access concessions without a huge hassle—even at halftime, where fans flood the concourses and beer lines. The stadium is deceptively intimate: you are on top of the action even at the most remote sections, thanks to the pitch of the upper-deck seating.

nashville sc stadium tour

Despite all the right angles, it would not be accurate to term GEODIS Park’s design as boxy, as the layout is not symmetrical. Three sides of the stadium—the two ends and the east side—feature full seating on two decks. The two-decked east side also features a 65-foot-wide concourse, with permanent concessions on the outer wall and an assortment of portables on the pitch side. On the north side the six supporters clubs have their own dedicated entrance (there is a total of seven entrances) leading directly to a 3,200-capacity supporters section, with safe seating that meets FIFA standards. A signature design element is at Gate C, where a team logo is hung.

nashville sc stadium tour

The west side of the concourse is where premium seats rule the day, including three concourse-level clubs and 18 loge boxes at center pitch. The second level features a large press box, suites and the Captain’s Club. Across that entire side of the stadium are 27 suites, four clubs and about 4,000 premium seats.

These four clubs are designed to attract a wide variety of fans. The EODIS WeHo Club is a music-themed lounge with its own stage and pre-match live music, and also includes an exhibit courtesy of the  National Museum of African-American Music . The Lo Siento Goal Post Club is a large sports-themed lounge, features walls of televisions broadcasting sports of all sorts, as well as some sports memorabilia. The Valkyrie Premier Club is a VIP-level lounge decorated with plenty of brass, dark woods and lounge-style season. These are all on the concourse level. A level above is the C-Spire Captains Club, an intimate dining and seating lounge highlighting the most historic team captains from around the globe. It features outdoor seating for 200 in addition to the indoor seating.

nashville sc stadium tour

The wide variety of clubs can be reconfigured for specific events. This points to one design goal for GEODIS Park: its use as an event center throughout the year. Nashville is built around the entertainment and hospitality economies. The size of 30,000—which leads to a capacity of 27,000 or so for concerts—puts GEODIS Park at a sweet spot: much more intimate that Nissan Stadium but larger than Bridgestone Arena at a venue that’s designed to accommodate large-scale events.

The concourse design is a little unusual, as one 360-degree concourse pretty much serves all the seating in the stadium. Though it may technically be a 360-degree concourse, in practice is is not. The concourse narrows considerably on the west side, and access is limited to those holding club and suite tickets. That led on Opening Day to bottlenecks at each end of this club concourse, with ticketholders in the rest of the bowl assuming they could walk all around the pitch—it’s unusual to find a stadium not allowing full access to the entire main concourse.

nashville sc stadium tour

And, in fact, the existence of bottlenecks at each end of the club area was one of the few instances where fans were confused about where to go on Opening Day. As noted, there are seven entrances to the stadium, and the lines for 30,000 fans entering the stadium didn’t seem too out of control. Part of that was an early gate opening—two hours before the Philadelphia Union-Nashville SC match started—and part was due to some conscious programming decisions designed to bring fans out early to the stadium but not necessarily inside the gates. A North Plaza featured live music and concessions well before the gates opened, while the EODIS WeHo Club featured live music inside. And the plan is to feature more live music after matches, to stagger the exits of fans.

Which may be a good idea, as there are some drawbacks to the site. The biggest: the substantial stadium sits on a modestly sized site, and the edge of the stadium grounds does feel like you’re in the back yards of the surrounding neighborhood. Parking is extremely limited, with only 5,000 spots under team control on site, including the lots at the neighboring Speedway. There are plenty more spots in the surrounding neighborhood, albeit accessible via a robust walk. This is not a stadium where you should impulsively head to a large event without a parking plan. We suspect parking will require a little time to be fine-tuned, perhaps via remote lots served by buses and easily accessible rideshare access.

The Kitchen is Open

One of the constants across all large events is food: no matter whether the event is a soccer match or concert, people must eat. Signature food items are also a big part of a venue’s branding. That’s why food offerings always receive plenty of play when discussing a stadium, and that’s why we cover concessions in some depth. We didn’t try all the menu items, of course, but we found some great offerings during our concourse wanderings.

In GEODIS Park,  Levy  is the main concessionaire, with six local restaurants brought in as food partners. Nashville is a foodie paradise, and the offerings from these locals are noteworthy. In an ideal world, every food sale at a sporting event is sold first by smell, so it’s no surprise the lines were solid at Central BBQ, where the smoke was an instant lure.

Also worth a stop: Prince’s Hot Chicken sandwich. Can’t make a Nashville run without some hot chicken, and Prince’s is known offering some of the best hot chicken in the area. Fried chicken is not exactly a stadium-friendly offering, though, but a hot chicken sandwich was on the Prince’s menu. Eat one topped with Miss André’s sauce, and grab extra napkins.

Another nontraditional stadium offering worth a stop: the Chivanada beef and chicken empanadas. As it ends up, these turnovers are perfectly suited for stadium consumption, with an interesting crispy shell.

For those seeking more traditional stadium fare, there are stands offering your basic hot dogs, pizza, beer, etc. There are stands offering elevated versions as well, including Daddy’s Dogs and Rock’n Dough Pizza & Brewery. And there’s also an extensive list of offerings in the clubs, including sliders and sandwiches. The food at GEODIS Park is varied enough to give fans a chance a totally different experience during every visit to the stadium.

GEODIS Park’s place in American soccer history was already assured upon opening as the largest American soccer-specific stadium. By launching with a series of sellouts, Nashville SC validated that decision, and if concerts come close to selling out, that decision will be doubly validated. True, Nashville is a unique market on so many levels, but a successful 30,000-seat stadium may lead to some MLS teams to approach new stadiums in a different light, and may cause some existing owners to debate stadium expansions.

The club has  previously released renderings of the soccer-specific venue at the Nashville Fair Grounds, currently scheduled to open in 2022, and have followed that up with the release of Thursday's video that gives us a virtual tour of what it will look like both on the field and inside the facility.

The video starts outside the stadium at the entry gates, before traveling inside for an overhead look at the field and stands and going inside for a peek at the various hang-outs and suites inside the venue.

Pitch Perfect

nashville sc stadium tour

On October 2, Major League Soccer ’s Nashville SC concluded its first regular season schedule at its new permanent home at GEODIS Park , a 30,000-seat stadium just south of Music City ’s downtown core at the historic Nashville Fairgrounds complex. Nashville SC hosted its first ( completely sold-out ) match against the Philadelphia Union on May 1 at the freshly completed venue, which ranks as the largest purpose-built soccer stadium in the United States and Canada. The $335 million project—one not without ample controversy —was designed in partnership by Populous in the role of architect of record and design architect with Nashville’s own HASTINGS serving as design architect. The design team worked in close collaboration with Nashville SC, a relatively new club established in 2020 that played its first two seasons across the Cumberland River at the HOK Sport–designed Nissan Stadium while construction on GEODIS Park was underway.

While pro soccer is obviously the crowd-drawing raison d’être of the landmark new stadium, GEODIS PARK was also designed—this being Nashville—to host major concerts. Able to accommodate up 27,500 music lovers, the flexible, open-air venue was designed with the requisite back-of-house infrastructure for one-off concerts and tours, including a flex room for stage crews, integrated power sources, and a truck tunnel leading directly from a loading dock area to the field.

“GEODIS Park is a world-class stadium that speaks specifically to human scale,” said Bruce Miller, Populous Senior Principal and Managing Director | Americas, and Populous Principal-in-Charge. “The Nashville identity is seamlessly and authentically woven into the design and the fabric of this stadium through our collaboration with HASTINGS, which pairs innovation and high design to energize and serve Nashville SC, its fans and the city.”

an exposed steel structure with banners of sports fans

As mentioned by Miller, the design team strove for a sense of authenticity in creating Nashville’s newest stadium, which takes form as an exposed steel structure ringed by a 360-degree canopy that soars above the stands. Its familiar, unfussy design is meant to be reflective of its location within the downtown-adjacent Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood. Once a gritty industrial zone, the Wedgewood-Houston of today is a buzzy creative hub dotted with converted warehouses and historic factory buildings. “The stadium expresses this juxtaposition with the high canopy structure representing the industrial aesthetic, and the brick-clad ground level structures that define the concourse representing the residential homes found in the neighborhood,” a press announcement detailed.

The design of GEODIS Park also isn’t meant to overwhelm visitors with garish, rah-rah fandom. While obviously very much the home of Nashville SC, the stadium embraces a more subtle, “lived-in” aesthetic with a warm materiality and an industrial edge. Bamboo lines the ceiling of the 65-wide concourse and wayfinding pays homage to the industrial heritage of the surrounding neighborhood. Bolstered by a robust public art program , murals and posters around the exterior of the stadium pay homage to Nashville’s rich history—particularly its musical legacy—while team slogans line the field tunnel and bright graphics depicting the club’s players and fans can be found hanging from its exposed steel beams.

GEODIS Park features a trio of club experiences: the swank Valkyrie Premiere Club at the middle center line, the music-themed WeHO Club on the north end, and the casual, sports bar–esque Lo Siento Goal Post Club on the south end. For those who want to get close to action, there’s a 3,150-square-foot safe standing supporter’s section incorporated into the bowl. The venue also offers a range of suite options, including a shared suite concept. With a small army of local vendors operating on-site, the all-important concession options—hot chicken, street tacos, pickle spear–topped hot dogs, and more—are, like the seating options, similarly diverse.

“A building of this scale and prominence presented an incredible opportunity to memorialize the industrial heritage of this rapidly changing neighborhood,” Dave Powell partner at HASTINGS told AN . “Our design solution celebrates the structural steel, painted black with white stenciled signage, creating a striking backdrop to the colorful tapestry of fans populating the stadium.”

GEODIS Park’s display boards—including two large displays in the field bowl along with ribbon boards and field boards—are by Daktronics , which also designed a display on the exterior of the stadium to “augment the community experience” pre-game, post-game, and during non-game day events.

“Designing spaces for our community is always rewarding, but a project of this scale, in a storied neighborhood such as this, and hosting the quantity and voracity of this fan base, is an unprecedented privilege for me,” Powell said. “Nashville SC recognized from the beginning that this stadium had to be uniquely Nashville. We were honored to represent our city in executing their vision.”

nashville sc stadium tour

While Nashville SC fans have embraced the superlatively large, state-of-the-art new home of the club with gusto (the 2022 season was totally sold out), the lead-up to the development of the stadium, as mentioned, was mired in controversy and legal clashes. In its early stages, two separate lawsuits were filed against stadium owner Metro Nashville over concerns that the construction of the stadium would disrupt the annual Tennessee State Fair held at the Nashville Fairgrounds, which is also home to the Nashville Speedway, a monthly flea market, and an arena famous as a pro wrestling mecca. A resolution to halt the demolition of buildings to make way for the new stadium, a marquee element of a larger mixed-use redevelopment plan at the fairgrounds, was also introduced by Metropolitan Council member Steve Glover in August 2019 but ultimately voted down .

Stalled by litigation and a ballooning budget, demolition work at the Nashville Fairgrounds finally kicked off in March 2020 (the venue was supposed to be completed by SC Nashville’s inaugural 2020 season) after an agreement was reached between Nashville Mayor John Cooper and lead club owner John R. Ingram and amendments were made to the original stadium deal. A naming rights deal was finalized with locally based freight logistics company GEODIS in March 2022.

Welcome to Nashville, whose new MLS stadium is the largest, and might be loudest, soccer stadium in the U.S.

nashville sc stadium tour

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The energy inside GEODIS Park was surreal as a sellout crowd of more than 30,000 Nashville SC fans got to witness the unveiling of the sparkling new stadium in a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

A tremendous sense of pride filled the atmosphere as thunderous "S-C" chants echoed throughout the largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States. Singer and songwriter Tommy Shaw of Styx kicked off the festivities, with his prematch guitar riff sending the fans into a frenzy.

The Music City has quickly embraced Nashville SC since the team joined the NFL's Tennessee Titans and NHL's Nashville Predators as its third major professional team in 2020. Games were initially played at Nissan Stadium, home of the Titans, with the first home match drawing 59,069 fans, setting a mark for the highest-attended soccer event in Tennessee.

It was during that inaugural season in 2020 that Nashville SC last endured a home loss. It then went unbeaten at home during the 2021 campaign -- becoming the seventh team in Major League Soccer history to achieve that feat -- and reached the playoffs in both seasons. However, the journey to Sunday's unveiling of GEODIS Park -- dubbed by some fans as "the Castle" -- was a long, arduous process.

MLS announced Nashville as an expansion team in 2016, but the expected cost of $275 million for a proposed stadium later increased to $345m. Despite challenges and roadblocks raised by the coronavirus pandemic, the stadium construction on a 10-acre site that was formerly the Nashville Fairgrounds continued to press forward. Demolition of the city-owned site began in March 2020.

"For any team, whether it's in soccer or other sport, the stadium is the spiritual home," Nashville SC chief executive officer Ian Ayre said. "If you're renting, it's not the same as owning, right? Of all the infrastructure and the parts we build, it's the most important."

Now in its third season, the club has gained enough traction in Nashville to warrant investment from local celebrities. Last week, Titans star running back Derrick Henry joined Nashville native Reese Witherspoon and technology investor Jim Toth as minority owners.

Amid all the pregame festivities, there was still a game to be played. Nashville SC was looking to extend its home unbeaten streak to 20 matches -- dating back to Nov. 20, 2020, the longest such streak in MLS. After being the more aggressive team in the first half, the hosts fell behind as Union forward Mikkel Uhre etched his name as the first goal scorer at GEODIS Park. But Philadelphia's goal merely added more fuel to the crowd that was waiting to erupt at the sight of a score by the home team. Nashville fans got their wish when midfielder Randall Leal slipped a penalty past Union goalkeeper Andre Blake , fulfilling a prophecy his father made before the game.

Leal sprinted to the corner and waved his hands as the fans went wild. "I scored and just ran to the fans," Leal said. "To be the first one to score and see the reaction from the fans, it was unbelievable."

Nashville SC coach Gary Smith called the crowd "magnificent," adding that the players felt the energy from the moment they walked onto the field for warm-ups. "The expectation and excitement that surrounded this opening game was huge," he said after the match. "To think that the players didn't feel that would be inhuman. The atmosphere was terrific."

Nashville had a couple more chances to net a second goal, but the game finished 1-1, with exhausted players collapsing on the pitch as the final whistle blew.

"It was an amazing atmosphere, you know? I think the guys, they came out and were ready," said Blake, who made a series of spectacular saves for Philadelphia. "We spoke about being calm and being confident before the game, and I think we did that."

And while players don't typically stay on the field after the game unless they win, the home side knew that Sunday was a different kind of moment. That's why they locked arms in front of the fans and sang the team's anthem, "Never Give Up On You" by local band Judah & the Lion.

Home. pic.twitter.com/xuT2NvT67f — Nashville SC (@NashvilleSC) May 1, 2022

"We put together a terrific run at the Titans [Nissan Stadium]," Smith said. "We've got to work to where we form that all over again here [at Geodis Park]. We always knew the fans would give us that extra boost. When you see just what it was like out there, I think there's a fabulous opportunity to try and harness that as a group. We've taken every first step in this arena and hopefully will make it just a successful period as we had at the Titans."

Nashville SC has now spent 544 days since last losing at home and just over two years since joining the league, Nashville SC are right at home at their new castle for the first of what fans hope will be the site of many more fantastic memories to come.

"To have our own home is vitally important," Smith said. "This venue now will be the place over the coming years and decades that fathers and sons will come to and look back on and say, 'Do you remember?'"

Morgan Wallen One Night At A Time Tour New Dates

Chart-Topping Success and Hits

Morgan Wallen’s One Night At A Time World Tour aligns with the release of his third studio album, One Thing At A Time , which debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart in March. It maintained its top position for an impressive 12 consecutive weeks, marking the longest run at the top for a country album in over 30 years. The album continues to rank among the top 10 alongside Wallen’s 6x platinum ACM Album of the Year, Dangerous: The Double Album , which holds the record for Billboard’s longest-running Top 10 album in history for a solo artist.

His hit song and Highway favorite “Last Night” became his fastest No. 1 to date, reigning atop the all-genre Billboard 100 chart for a remarkable 16 weeks, making it the longest-running No. 1 solo song in Hot 100 history.

Currently, Wallen has two songs rapidly climbing the country radio charts: “Everything I Love,” which includes an interpolation of The Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” and the self-assured track “Thinkin’ Bout Me.”

“I Wrote the Book” also just topped The Highway’s Hot 30 Weekend Countdown  two weeks in a row.

Ticket Registration and Presale

To ensure that tickets are distributed fairly and efficiently, the One Night At A Time 2024 tour will utilize advance registration. Fans can register for tickets starting now through Sunday, Oct. 1 at 11:59pm PT. Once the registration period closes, lucky fans will be randomly selected to receive a presale code and a designated day/time for their presale access.

Fans who had previously purchased tickets for the canceled Oxford show on Saturday, April 23, 2023, will also have access to an early presale, with details sent directly to their email.

VIP Packages for an Enhanced Concert Experience

For those seeking an even more extraordinary concert experience, the tour offers various VIP packages and experiences . These packages may include premium tickets, guided backstage tours, group photos on stage, invitations to the Morgan Wallen VIP Lounge, VIP-exclusive gift items, and more.

A Charitable Initiative

A significant aspect of Morgan’s tour is its philanthropic commitment. Three dollars ($3) from each ticket sold for U.S. dates will benefit the Morgan Wallen Foundation (MWF), supporting youth programs with a focus on sports and music.

Wallen has also actively contributed to community revitalization efforts in select cities on his tour, including Boston and Chicago. Recently, MWF donated $500,000 to Habitat For Humanity of Greater Nashville’s Parkwood community transformation project. The foundation has further provided funding to nonprofits such as Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, Make-A-Wish, The Salvation Army, and the National Museum of African American Music.

Morgan Wallen’s One Night At A Time 2024 tour is set to continue the tradition of electrifying performances and deep connections with fans, making it a must-see event for all country music enthusiasts.
