Cannabis Growing Guide

The Complete Guide to Cannabis Tourism in Seattle

The Complete Guide to Cannabis Tourism in Seattle

We encourage you to enjoy your weed vacation safely by making use of Seattle’s accommodating public transit system, taxis, ride-sharing services, or by exploring Seattle’s walkable downtown areas on foot. In fact, strolling through the beautiful walking paths, parks, and neighborhoods of Seattle is one of the best ways to enjoy your cannabis high, says Jason Green, manager of the popular dispensary Ganja Goddess.

First things first: where can you buy weed in Seattle?

Some of the finest (and most environmentally-friendly) weed in the United States is grown in the Seattle area. Several local farms, such as Hollingsworth Cannabis Company and Puffin Farms , are dedicated to cultivating their cannabis without the use of toxic pesticides. In addition, Hollingsworth runs its sustainable farm on solar energy, and Puffin is Clean Green Certified (the weed equivalent of “organic”). Many of Seattle’s cannabis shops proudly sell local marijuana from these and other farms.

Anyone over 21 with a valid horizontal ID card can buy recreational weed, but the cannabis must be consumed in Washington state. Please note that Seattle dispensaries do not allow sampling or consumption of cannabis on-site. There are tons of great dispensaries scattered throughout the Seattle area. Here are a few of our favorites – all of which stay open from first thing in the morning until 11 pm or later most days:

Cannabis dispensaries in Seattle:

#1 cannabis city.

Cannabis City Team

The Cannabis City Staff

Veteran and Doctor-owned Cannabis City was Seattle’s very first recreational cannabis shop, opening its doors in 2014. And they continue to offer high-quality cannabis products and stellar customer service today! The first purchase of legal recreational cannabis in Seattle was made at Cannabis City – an event so significant that those original 2 grams of “Sweet Lafayette” now sit in an exhibit at Seattle’s MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry)! The grand opening also included notable purchases by city attorney Pete Holmes and Alison Holcomb, the architect of the I-502 legalization bill.

Still going strong today, Cannabis City strives to offer “something for everyone,” catering to a variety of needs and price points. Their staff of budtenders share a passion for cannabis and helping people. Founder Dr. James Lathrop (who is furthering his knowledge of cannabis therapeutics in the University of Washington’s Ph.D. program) also makes himself available to answer your questions via email on Cannabis City’s website. Cannabis City is the closest cannabis shop to the light-rail system, only a block away from the SODO station (a quick and cheap ride from downtown or Sea-Tac). Or, you can hitch a free ride on their mini tour bus!

Cannabis City Tours

Cannabis City Tours give you a free up-close look at Seattle’s first licensed marijuana growing facility, Dawg Star Cannabis, and free round-trip mini-bus rides to Cannabis City from Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, and Waterfront Park. Tours run every 45 minutes and you can secure a spot in advance for a $20 refundable deposit. Or, just flag down the bus and hop on for free if you see it in your area! You can also call to arrange pick-up in another location.

Cannabis City frequently runs special deals, and they have a loyalty program you can join to earn extra discounts and free gifts. Plus, you’ll get 10% off regularly-priced items if you visit on your birthday, wear a game-day jersey, are a veteran or member of the U.S. military, are age 55 or older, or have a medical marijuana card. You can pre-order online for express pick-up, too. Cannabis City accepts cash and debit card purchases, and there is an on-site ATM for your convenience.

#2 Ganja Goddess

Ganja Goddess, Seattle

Ganja Goddess, Seattle

One of Seattle’s oldest cannabis shops, and the first woman-owned one, Ganja Goddess , has grown up right alongside the city’s legal cannabis market. While cannabis is certainly not used and embraced by everyone in Seattle, Ganja Goddess’s general manager, Jason Green, describes it as a “widely tolerated niche.” People out for a morning or evening “joint walk” are not an uncommon sight (of course, please bear in mind that public consumption of cannabis is not actually legal in Seattle).

When Ganja Goddess first opened its doors back in 2014, legal cannabis prices were outrageous, the quality was questionable, and the packaging was very basic. But now, Ganja Goddess is one of Seattle’s best cannabis shops, offering the biggest selection of high-quality strains, edibles, and concentrates in the city – at great prices, and in packaging pretty enough to sit on the shelves at Whole Foods!

Located in the Central Industrial District (which is actually a hotspot full of nightclubs and restaurants), this stylish and personable shop runs daily specials, including a “wake and bake” morning happy hour most days of the week, and a rewards program with a special offer just for signing up. You can pre-order your weed online (at a discounted rate), and Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Ganja Goddess is a stop on Show Me Seattle’s Herban Adventure tour, and they also host regular “meet the vendor” events.

#3 Green Collar Cannabis

The Green Collar

Green Collar Cannabis

Located in nearby Tacoma (close to Parkland and about a half-hour from Sea-Tac), Green Collar Cannabis is dedicated to selling a wide variety of high-quality cannabis products, and their knowledgeable and friendly staff aim to make every customer feel welcome. They also offers a 10% discount for tribal members, veterans, and medical marijuana cardholders.

Green Collar Cannabis is open 8 am – 12 am every day (even Christmas Day!) so that you’ll never be without weed when you need it! You can even pre-order online. An ATM is available on-site, as Green Collar Cannabis is a cash-only dispensary.

Green Collar Cannabis has more exciting fun on the horizon, with cannabis boat tours slated to begin in the near future. Green Collar Cannabis invites you to contact the shop for more details on their tours as they become available.

#4 (Lux) Pot Shop

(Lux) Pot Shop

(Lux) Pot Shop

(Lux) Pot Shop offers an impressive selection of high-quality (and all Washington-grown) cannabis products in their beautiful, inviting shops. (Lux) places a high value on community, education, and culture that shows in everything they do – from local art showcased in their shops, to the many local organizations (Lux) supports and makes donations to. (Lux) even sponsors several rising-talent musicians from the Seattle area.

All of (Lux) Pot Shop’s budtenders receive top-notch education about cannabis and the products they sell – so they can transfer that knowledge to you! (Lux) currently has 2 Seattle locations (Ballard and Lake City) and a third is scheduled to open very soon in Fremont. You can browse their menus and pre-order your weed online. If you join the (Lux) loyalty program, you’ll even get 15% off your very first purchase! (Lux) is a cash-only shop, but they have ATMs on-site.

#5 Mary Mart

Mary Mart

Mary Mart , located in Central Tacoma (easily accessible from interstate 5), is one of the Seattle area’s top cannabis shops. Their weed selection has been carefully curated to bring you a huge selection of the highest quality products at a variety of price points. Their fun, friendly, and highly knowledgeable staff make cannabis shopping a breeze for first-timers as well as regulars. The shop is spacious and stylish, complete with a comfy seating area. And there is plenty of space to park, too.

You can sign up for Mary Mart’s rewards program, and take advantage of a variety of “daily specials” and sale events. Veterans get an everyday savings of 10%, and so does anyone who visits on their birthday! You can browse their exceptional product inventory online before you go, and pre-order for pickup if you’re in a hurry.

420-friendly places to stay

Each of these weed-friendly Seattle hotel alternatives is an experience in its own right! Whether you want to stay in a place you won’t even want to leave, or just need a place to crash after long days of adventure, these gems fit the bill.

Cannabis-friendly hotels in Seattle:

#6 mountain views tree house b&b retreat.

What could be more fun than getting stoned in a treehouse!? At Mountain Views , you can stay in one of 3 uniquely styled treehouses, aptly named The Pot Leaf, The Hashtag, and The 420.  This gorgeous weed-friendly retreat is located on a farm, complete with quirky animals – including a pig named VeggieMight who loves to play dress-up, and an African grey parrot with a swearing habit.

Mountain Views is a destination in its own right, located one hour northeast of Seattle in Monroe, Washington. The farm is easily accessible from U.S. Route 2 and is also very close to Wallace Falls State Park. Mountain Views’ guests all must be 21 and over, and at this time, pets are not allowed to join the menagerie.

In addition to the treehouses, you can rent individual rooms in the farmhouse, or set up an RV or camping tent on the property. If you don’t plan to stay overnight, you can still purchase a day pass (available Mondays-Thursdays) to hang out and enjoy the amenities of this beautiful property (including an outdoor hot tub). Or, you could book all three treehouses for your group, or the entire farm if you want to host a wedding, house party, or other events.

#7 Bed Baked and Beyond

It’s easy to see why this gorgeous and unique bed & breakfast spot receives so many rave reviews. Bed Baked and Beyond is a large Victorian home close to downtown Seattle that can accommodate up to ten guests (a downstairs room is available if stairs are a challenge for you). There is a fire-pit and flower garden in the backyard, as well as a covered potting shed-turned-smoking lounge, aptly named “The Pot-ting Shed” so you’ll be able to comfortably light up a joint no matter what the weather (all smoking is outside of the main house). Inside, in addition to your private bedroom, there are several beautifully decorated common rooms to relax in, complete with a record collection and turntable for music lovers.

A breakfast of seasonal fruit, homemade gourmet muffins, and organic coffee and tea is included with your stay. In the evening, you’ll be invited to sample a complimentary craft beer (one of the owners is actually a professional beer appreciator). Bed Baked and Beyond warmly welcomes visitors of all races, genders, and sexualities. Booking is currently handled via their AirBnB page.

#8 The Green Tortoise

The Green Tortoise is a hostel in the heart of Seattle, walking distance from the famous Pike Place Market, tons of restaurants (including El Borracho and Top Pot Doughnuts!), the Seattle Aquarium, and the Seattle Art Museum. It’s easy to meet new like-minded friends at the Green Tortoise! In addition to a comfortable smoking lounge, foosball table, and a fully-equipped communal kitchen, the Green Tortoise hosts a free ice cream social twice a week as well as group activities like pub crawls and city walking tours.

The Green Tortoise is clean, modern, and offers private rooms for those who don’t like dorms. In the dorms (female-only and co-ed are available), each bed does have privacy curtains and a reading light. You’ll also get a storage locker. No matter which part of the hostel you are staying in, all of the bathrooms are private (shower and toilet) with locking doors. The wi-fi is free at the Green Tortoise, and so is a hearty breakfast!

Adventures and Activities

Now that you’ve got your stash and a place to stay, what do you want to do now? These are our favorite ways to spend a stoned day in Seattle:

Cannabis tours

Seattle visitors aged 21 and older can get a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s blossoming cannabis industry with these cannabis-themed spins on the typical city tour.

#9 Show Me Seattle’s Herban Adventure

Show Me Seattle is a tour company known for its entertaining and interestingly-themed tours. Their Herban Adventure cannabis tour gives you a fun and unique look at Seattle’s legal cannabis scene. Each tour takes you through a cannabis production facility, a cannabis garden, and a well-known dispensary (Ganja Goddess is in their rotation).

Seattle Cannabis Tour

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s blossoming cannabis industry.

Herban Adventures visits one set of 3 featured stops on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and a set of 3 others on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The 2.5-hour bus tour runs twice a day (morning and afternoon) and currently runs $99 per person. The pick-up and drop-off location is Westlake Center, a popular shopping area just a few blocks away from Pike Place Market and Seattle Center. If you are traveling in a group, you can even book your own private Herban Adventure! Private tour groups can be picked up and dropped off at any hotel in the greater Seattle area.

#10 Seattle Green Adventures

If you’d prefer to experience your cannabis tour from the backseat of a 10-passenger limo, Seattle Green Adventures is the tour for you. Seattle Green Adventures weaves cannabis history, science, and culture into each of their 3 different tour packages. If your flight gets in on a weekday, the 1-hour Airport Welcome Tour can pick you up from Sea-Tac, bring you directly to a featured cannabis shop, and then drop you off at your hotel (within a 15-mile radius of downtown).

Seattle Green Adventure

The standard Seattle Green Adventures Tour operates 7 days a week and the limo will pick you up for it anywhere within that 15-mile downtown radius. This 4-hour tour gives you the VIP experience at 2-3 cannabis shops as well as a look at either a cannabis growing operation or glass blowing studio (depending on the day). You can even spring for a premium customizable tour, which, in addition to the standard stops, can include visits to some of Seattle’s most popular sites, a cannabis and wine dinner, or even an edibles-making class.

Rates start at $119 for the Airport Welcome Tour and can vary quite a bit, depending on how many people are in your party (larger parties pay less per person) and, of course, on which activities you include in your Premium Tour.

#11 Mile High Canna Tours

Mile High Canna Tours

You can make new friends, learn more about how weed is grown, and consume some while you take in the beautiful sights of downtown Seattle on Mile High Canna Tours ’ classic “Canna-Bus.” These fun and educational 3.5-hour tours take you (and a small busload of fellow cannabis enthusiasts) on a city tour that includes visiting two local cannabis farms and a dispensary. If you opt for the “gold” package, you can also enjoy a private smoking and painting session after the tour.

Mile High Canna Tours run Wednesday through Sunday, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

The country’s biggest cannabis festival calls Seattle home

#12 seattle hempfest.

If you happen to be in Seattle in the middle of August, HEMPFEST is definitely worth checking out. This world-famous annual cannabis-activism event has been running for over 25 years. HEMPFEST is a 3-day festival hosted in Myrtle Edwards Park, a waterfront park close to Seattle Center. HEMPFEST always attracts an impressive array of speakers and guests, from Congressmen to celebrities (including actor Woody Harrelson) – not to mention live music and hundreds of vendors.

HEMPFEST is entirely staffed by volunteers, and admission is free. This festival is more than a place to celebrate your love of weed with like-minded people. At its heart, HEMPFEST is a political rally for social reform; “Protestival” is their term of choice.  It is important to note that HEMPFEST is a great place to show your support for cannabis, learn from the speakers and vendors, and meet other weed enthusiasts, but it is illegal to use cannabis in Seattle’s public parks, so plan your trip accordingly!

Seattle attractions that are way more fun with weed

You can enjoy an amazing day of activities without even leaving the heart of Seattle Center (which is easily accessible via Seattle’s light rail system). Most of these destinations are less than 5 minutes’ walking distance from the Space Needle, Seattle’s most famous downtown landmark.

#13 Meowtropolitan

If you love being around snuggly, entertaining animals when you’re stoned, Meowtropolitan is sure to delight you! Meowtropolitan is a cafe with its own “Cat Lounge,” where you can hang out with 10-15 adorable shelter cats (as well as Meowtropolitan’s 6 permanent resident felines). The cats get to enjoy a fun and engaging playroom, including all sorts of creatively built-in cat trees – plus tons of love and attention from their human visitors.

For $13 per person (which includes a beverage), you can enjoy a 50-minute visit to snuggle, pet, and play with the cats. You can also view the cat lounge behind glass from inside the cafe if you’d rather just watch. The chai latte and meowca, even come with cat face latte art! Meowtropolitan also regularly hosts yoga classes and instructor-led wine and painting nights inside the cat lounge.

You can visit the cats on a walk-in basis, but capacity is limited, so it’s a good idea to book in advance. The cat lounge (but not the cafe) is closed on Mondays, and from 3-4 p.m. every day. Meowtropolitan is located in Wallingford, Seattle.

We all know weed is the perfect companion to geeking out over your favorite music, movies, TV shows, or video games. And the Museum of Pop Culture , located in the heart of Seattle Center, is the perfect place to do it! MoPOP has 3 floors of immersive exhibits including a Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, a huge Minecraft exhibition, showcases paying tribute to beloved musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana, and the Sound Lab, where you can play around with real music recording equipment.

MoPOP also hosts live music events and movie screenings. You can choose from the Campout Cinema Series (bring pillows and blankets or a sleeping bag and get comfy on the floor!) or the Reel Dark Series, which includes the opportunity to delve deeper into the movie with discussions and live performances. Both of these movie events include film-themed snacks. But anytime the munchies hit at MoPOP, Wolfgang Puck’s Cafe, Culture Kitchen Seattle, is located right inside the museum.

#15 Seattle Great Wheel

Enjoy breathtaking views of Elliott Bay from an enclosed gondola on this 175 foot (60 meters) tall Ferris wheel located close to Pike Place Market. The Seattle Great Wheel offers rides all day and late into the night. Ride times run about 10-20 minutes, depending on the crowd size and how many gondolas are being filled. But every ride is a full 3 revolutions of the Great Wheel. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, and for holiday events, the 500,000 LED lights that cover the wheel are turned into a spectacular light show.

Seattle Great Wheel

Seattle Great Wheel – Enjoy breathtaking views of Elliott Bay.

There is a private VIP gondola for parties up to 4, featuring a glass floor, leather seats, and a stereo system. The VIP package (which runs $50 per person) even includes a t-shirt, photo, and complimentary champagne toast at Fisherman’s Restaurant, which is just a few steps away from the Great Wheel. If all guests in the VIP party are 21 or over, you can even enjoy an alcoholic beverage in the gondola, if you so desire.

#16 Pacific Science Center

The Pacific Science Center (also located in Seattle Center) offers a wide range of interactive exhibits and spellbinding entertainment. The museum features living exhibits (plants, small animals, and butterflies), hands-on science areas, virtual reality experiences, and much more. If you just want to sit back and be fascinated, you can also take in an IMAX movie or one of several themed planetarium shows, right there at the museum.

Pacific Science Center’s Laser Dome is especially fun to experience when you’re high. These hour-long evening shows each feature a mesmerizing laser show set to the music of a featured popular artist (the lineup changes relatively often). The artist selections have ranged from classics like David Bowie, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd, to Tool, Ariana Grande, and Chance the Rapper. The afternoon shows run about 30 minutes and feature music from family-friendly movies.

#17 Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum

Another Seattle Center attraction, this trippy museum features the unique glasswork of Dale Chihuly. This museum is small enough to browse through in an hour or two, but these pieces are hypnotizing enough that you might find yourself here all day! The outdoor exhibition garden is landscaped with glass sculptures as well as flowers and there are 8 galleries to explore inside.

Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum

Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum

The Chihuly Museum’s most beloved (and breathtaking) feature is the glasshouse. This 4,500 square foot room has a 40-foot high domed ceiling, walled entirely with steel and glass. In the glasshouse, a 100-foot sculpture resembling a garland of red, orange, and yellow flowers is suspended in the air above you. The glass room and glass sculpture take on different shades of color and luminescence throughout the day, due to weather and the daily journey of the sun across the sky. You can even take a yoga or barre fitness class inside the glasshouse, or watch a demonstration of the mesmerizing glass blowing process. Private guided tours are available, and there is a cafe on-site, so you can indulge the munchies without leaving this psychedelic little world.

#18 Washington Park Arboretum

This one’s actually about a 15-minute drive from Seattle Center. But if you want to get in touch with nature, even in the middle of this huge city, the Washington Park Arboretum is a gorgeous place full of gentle walking trails to explore – either as part of a walking tour or solo. This 230-acre arboretum is split into several differently-styled gardens, featuring plants and flowers from all over the world – and admission is free! There are also free 1-hour narrated tram tours if all of that walking sounds too daunting.

From March – November, the exceptionally beautiful Japanese Garden is also open. The Japanese Garden does charge an $8 regular admission fee, but if you’re a college student, senior citizen, or disabled, you can enter for free. The Washington Park Arboretum is located on the shores of Lake Washington, close to the University of Washington campus.

Indulge the munchies, Seattle style!

Naturally, a weed-friendly city like Seattle can be expected to have some top-notch munchie options, and Seattle does not disappoint!

#19 Top Pot Doughnuts

Top Pot Doughnuts

Top Pot Doughnuts

Despite the enticing name, these doughnuts sadly don’t come laced with weed. However, they just might be the best sweet-tooth stoner snacks ever! Top Pot still makes their doughnuts by hand, following an original 1920s recipe, and there are over 40 doughnut varieties to choose from. There are currently 11 Top Pot locations all over Seattle and more sprinkled through the suburbs. Or, you can order a batch of these amazing doughnuts and have them delivered right to you!

#20 The 5 Point Cafe

For comfort food, any time of the day or night, this old-fashioned yet irreverent 24-hour diner located close to Seattle Center has what you need! The 5 Point has indoor and outdoor seating, music blaring from jukeboxes, stiff drinks, and a menu that covers everything from breakfast burritos and French toast to nachos, steaks, and build-your-own burgers. Any case of the munchies can be sated here, with novel (and delicious!) specials like Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch pancakes topped with whipped cream, peanut butter, and chocolate sauce or deep-fried bacon-jalapeno mac-and-cheese balls.

#21 El Borracho

El Borracho

Don’t miss the taco happy hour!

This easy-going taco place is located by Pike Place Market, (with a second location in Ballard, Seattle) and they’re open until 11 pm (midnight on Friday and Saturday). The Ballard location stays up even later, until 2 am seven days a week, with a late-night taco happy hour starting at 11 pm. El Borracho is “kid-friendly” only until 5 pm (until 4 pm and all day Sunday at Ballard), so you can rest assured that you won’t be awkwardly stuck seated right next to a family at dinner.

Seattle has everything you need for a cannabis vacation!

With classy dispensaries offering locally grown weed, cannabis tours to take you behind the scenes, unique lodging that caters to cannabis junkies, and enough stoner-friendly activities (and food!) to keep you busy for weeks, Seattle is a must-visit for any cannabis lover!

With many states legalizing recreational marijuana use recently, a vacation where you can smoke cannabis worry-free and take in all a place has to offer is something that is attainable without having to go all the way to Amsterdam.

As one of the nation’s leaders in the cannabis industry and a longtime outpost of cannabis culture, Seattle is at the forefront of providing amazing marijuana tourism experiences. At Evergreen Market, our team of Seattleite cannabis experts has compiled our personal list of reasons why Seattle should be your next (or your first) cannabis tourism destination.

• A Walkable, Bikeable City

Seattle has a hardcore community of bike commuters and other cyclists, plus several bike rental companies offering convenient bikes you can hop on pretty much anywhere in the city. All this adds up to plenty of bike lanes, several popular protected bike trails and paths, and hundreds and hundreds of bokes for you to rent all within the city limits (plus even longer bike trails just outside of town). The Burke-Gilman trail , which runs all the way from Ballard to outside Seattle city limits along the ship canal and Lake Washington, and the Elliot Bay trail , which runs along the bay from Interbay to downtown and is a great way to access ferries or the Pike Place market by bike, are just two of the popular options for getting around by bike.

The city is also walkable, with clusters of fun neighborhoods to explore, farmer’s markets to stroll through, and popular parks like Green Lake, Volunteer Park and Discovery Park featuring miles and miles of walking trails. Person-powered transportation is a natural fit for cannabis use and you’ll find plenty of options for those activities in Seattle.

• The Weather

We promise this isn’t a joke: while Seattle may have a reputation as a rain-soaked city, in reality it has relatively mild Winters, gorgeous Spring days and colorful, crisp Fall afternoons. And as any Seattleite will tell you, the summers are incredible.

In the Summer, Seattle is sunny and green, but never too hot. And the city is far enough North that the days are long, perfect for packing in all the activity you want and ending the day with an exquisite smoke session while you watch a late sunset.

• Our Diverse, Tasty Food Scene

Seattle’s community of cannabis users have always been able to count on one thing: when the munchies kick in, there are always plenty of good options for satisfying, affordable food from all over the globe.

No matter where you are in Seattle, you can find everything from savory Pho to all the tacos your heart could desire, including many popular spots that are open 24 hours for late night gratification. Stay tuned for our full guide to Seattle’s best food spots for marijuana users to see our personal favorite restaurants in each major Seattle neighborhood coming next week.

• The Outdoors

If your idea of the perfect cannabis getaway involves being one with nature, then there are few places better to be than the great Pacific Northwest! A short trip from the city can place you in some stunning scenery.

From Mount Rainier National Park to the dozens of hikes on the I-90 corridor, Seattle offers access to mountains galore. Head up North to the foothills of Bellingham or the snowy slopes and gorgeous meadows of Mount Baker or West to the coastal beauty of the Olympic National Park or the vibrant greenery of the Hoh rain forest. Check out the Washington Trails Association for hiking guides, maps and driving directions, seasonal and regional trail recommendations and more.

• 420-friendly Lodging

With its relatively long period of marijuana legalization and a cannabis-friendly local culture already in place, the Seattle area is ahead of the curve on hotels, Air BNBs and other lodging options that allow cannabis users to enjoy fine local product without having to stand in the parking lot or throw a beanie over the smoke detector.

Evergreen Market has put together our own expert guide to the best lodging options for marijuana tourists (and locals who want a weed-filled staycation). Check out our full guide to the best 420-friendly hotels in the Pacific Northwest.

• The Original Hempfest and Other Killer Festivals

Seattle was one of the first places in the US to accommodate marijuana users. Vivian McPeak started this yearly festival back in 1991, creating the perfect place to get together and celebrate cannabis. Hempfest has been cited as the largest ‘protestival’ on record due to it’s massive turnout.

Now, the era of legalization has only made the August festival even better. And it’s far from the only amazing cannabis-friendly festival that happens in or around Seattle: Northwest Folklife on Memorial Day Weekend, Bumbershoot on Labor Day Weekend and huge shows at The Gorge all summer long offer unmissable opportunities to enjoy culture, music and cannabis in the Seattle area.

• Kush Tourism

With all the great options to explore and enjoy Seattle, you should be able to plan a great trip centered on your enjoyment of cannabis. However, if you’re looking for a company to plan some adventures for you, the nationwide legal marijuana tourism company Kush Tourism has set up shop in Seattle.

Kush Tourism offers a great Seattle day tour that covers every facet of the legal cannabis industry, from visiting a glass blowing shop to touring a full grow operation. This kind of behind the scenes access helps make Seattle a destination that will appeal to true cannabis geeks just as much as casual users.

• The Marijuana!

Washington state has some of the best marijuana in the country today. It’s very much a craft industry, with fine product from expert local growers and yet still great prices! At Evergreen Market, you’ll be able to find some of the most popular craft growers in WA state: House of Cultivar, Artizen, 1937 Farms, Gabriel, and more.

Marijuana in Seattle: Enjoy Responsibly

Marijuana: what visitors to seattle and washington state need to know.

Although still a federal offense to manufacture, sell or possess marijuana, as of December 2012, Washington passed Initiative 502 (I-502), a law which allows adults over the age of 21 to purchase up to one ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of marijuana infused products in solid form, 72 ounces of marijuana infused oils or up to seven grams of marijuana extract or concentrate, of for recreational use in the State of Washington. The Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) is the governing body and its I-502 website should be considered the official resource for the law.

The basics:

  • You must be 21 or older to have or use retail marijuana
  • DO NOT sell or give retail marijuana to minors. It is illegal.
  • DO NOT drive while high. It is illegal.
  • DO NOT consume marijuana in public. It is illegal.
  • DO NOT take marijuana out of the state. It is illegal.
  • DO NOT purchase marijuana products from establishments that are not licensed to sell such products. It is Illegal.
  • DO NOT take marijuana products onto cruise ships or onto federal land. This includes, but is not limited to the Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park, including the state’s ski areas. Any navigable waterway is patrolled by the U.S. Coast Guard and therefore being in possession of marijuana would be illegal, as well.

A little more information:

  • Marijuana purchases must be made in Washington State approved retail stores. The location of these can be found on the WSLBC website.
  • The law states that it is illegal to open a package containing marijuana or marijuana product, or smoke marijuana in public. This includes but is not limited to parks and sidewalks, business and residential areas, and federal and public lands.
  • It is also illegal to smoke marijuana in other locations where smoking is illegal, including bars, restaurants, buildings open to the public, places of employment, and areas within 25 feet of doors and ventilation openings.
  • The majority of Seattle’s hotels are smoke-free. Seventy-five percent of Washington State’s hotels are non-smoking so it is recommend that you check with your hotel before smoking marijuana in a hotel room.
  • Washington State’s DUI laws apply to driving under the influence of marijuana. An adult driver with 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood will be charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

For more information on Washington State’s legal marijuana laws, please consult the Laws, Rules & FAQs , provided by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board.

Come along on a cannabis tour in Seattle

  • October 15, 2018
  • Nation & World

There are monastic brewery adventures in Germany and Belgium, and winery tours from Napa Valley to Bordeaux. Welsh cheese treks and Vietnamese street food jaunts beckon the more adventurous. And now, there are cannabis tours, too.

In at least nine states and the District of Colombia, consenting adults over 21 can purchase marijuana for recreational use. (Finding a place to use it is another hurdle, but more on that later.) So the idea of a different sort of vacation was appealing.

Like many adventures these days, mine began with an internet search: “Seattle marijuana tours.”

Seattle’s entertaining Kush Tours popped up — a 3½-hour adventure for $150 plus an Amtrak train ride to get me there. They also offer advice on 420-friendly places to stay, such as the Bacon Mansion, a B&B on Capitol Hill, as well as hotels with smoke-friendly courtyards, if not smoke-friendly rooms. The Bacon Mansion is a convenient 15-minute walk from the new train line that runs from the airport to the University of Washington, with stops in the SoDo — south of downtown — neighborhood.

The tour rendezvous spot was Diego Pellicer, a high-end SoDo marijuana store that looks like a fancy jewelry design boutique, all glitzy glass and tiny sparkles on display. It was super fancy, with gold-wrapped “canagar” Cohiba-sized joints for easily more than a grand, if you really want to get decadent, but offerings for bargain shoppers, as well.

marijuana tour seattle

Our small group of seven varied both in age, which ranged from early 30s to 60-somethings, and expertise. One guy seemed to know even more than the master horticulturalist, who explained the marijuana growth cycle later on.

Following introductions, a “budtender” walked us around the shop, explaining everything from concentrates and flowers vs. edibles, to strains, types, THCa, THC, CBD, sativa, indica and more.

After the tour and some homework — not kidding, we actually got a cool crib sheet about how different terpenes affect the high from different kinds of marijuana — we piled into the van and headed off to the shores of Lake Union, where Drags Glass Studio sits in a cool, funky building across from all the fancy yachts.

We watched the owner blow a type of pipe called a “spoon” in about 15 minutes, all the while explaining what he was doing and how it worked. The Drags lobby has a map where tour participants can pin their hometowns. Washington State’s legal recreational market is only four years old and this map was already bristling with pins. I couldn’t wedge one in for Oakland; there were too many already.

Piling back into the van, en route to Craft Elixirs, we made a pit stop: Our driver pulled over at a lovely overlook of the city and encouraged us to “go do what adults do when the kids aren’t around.” For 15 minutes, we all wandered off and then wandered back.

And this is how the Kush Tour and the cannabis tour industry differs from a standard winery or brewery tour. Marijuana is legal here, but there’s a wink-and-a-nod feel to this. No one’s sitting in a tasting room at a massive marijuana farm, smoking a joint of their latest award-winning offering. You explore, you purchase and then you quietly — wink — wander off to do what adults do.

Of course, it’s early days yet. Denver only recently voted to take a first step toward Amsterdam-style “cafes,” and there is a Southern California tour where you can smoke marijuana on the bus, while you’re being driven around. And truly, my interest in the Kush Tour is more than just consumption.

The Bay Area has a number of these tours, including several that cover the city and its counter-culture history as well as the marijuana industry. One operator is even promising a future tour of North Bay farm operations.

Click here if you have trouble viewing this video on a mobile device.

But on to Craft Elixirs in Seattle, winners this year of a Dope Cup award — it’s a Washington state competition — for an edible called, appropriately for Seattle, Pioneer Square. We tried a number of their candies, all gummies, none of them containing any THC and all of them delicious.

One of the nice things about the current edibles business is that the producers are primarily small-batch confectioners. No joke: Craft Elixirs is making some delicious candy. It’s also one of the few places I have seen doing a savory edible. They make some very tasty potato chips, flavored with garlic or cracked pepper and sea salt, plus a sweet-potato version.

We also learned more about the industry here, including shipping rules. There’s a 48-hour hold, for example, to allow for possible state inspection before an order can be shipped.

One more stop remained: the Dawg Star Cannabis grow site. Dawg Star’s recent Dope Cup award was displayed in the lobby, next to a rack of white lab coats we all donned before the tour began. The lead horticulturalist explained how a year-round Tier 2 operation like theirs — there are three possible tiers based on maximum allowable growing space — operates.

Dawg Star works on clones of female plants: They plant cuttings, not seeds. We started in the 18-hour daylight room, with blue-spectrum lights and plants that measured two to three feet tall, with a very mild aroma. The next phase, he explained just before opening the door to the “blooming room,” involved red-spectrum lights and 12-hour cycles for more enthusiastic growth.

The room was filled with almost fully mature marijuana plant, of various strains. We stood, the seven of us in borrowed white lab coats, gobsmacked. It was a stunning sight. And smell.

The final stop was the drying room, with lines of drying marijuana, and a chance to ask more questions.

And then it was done. Lab coats returned, we bid our host farewell, and headed back to the van for the return trip to Diego Pellicer — and back to life in the Emerald City.

Weed Activities to Do in Seattle

Share this article via:

Seattle has long been a hub for weed lovers; in 1991 Hempfest took to the streets, medical marijuana was legalized in 1998, and recreational puffs filled homes legally in 2012. A rich marijuana history has laid the groundwork for today's open-minded and welcoming cannabis landscape. Tourists and locals alike come together, smoke their favorite strain , and enjoy all that the city has to offer.

For those with cannabis on the mind, take a peek into the many weed activities in Seattle . In addition to looking through local events, be sure to look into regularly scheduled activities and Washington dispensaries nearby . From cooking classes to tours, there are plenty of weed activities in Seattle to do with a higher mind, body, and spirit.

Table of Contents

Activity #1: Puff, Pass, Paint Class

There's a tired and true saying that describes the social activity of smoking weed. You are sure to have heard it: "puff, puff, pass." This weed activity in Seattle took things a step further with their twist on the classic cannabis sentiment with Puff, Pass, Paint .

This fun and punny offering is an interactive and recreational chance to smoke pot and light up a canvas with colorful art. This company, which has roots in Washington in addition to most legalized states, has been providing cannabis enthusiasts this workshop-style event since 2014. It's lauded as the very first weed class to hit the industry, and has inspired several spinoffs, including pottery, pincushioning, baking, sushi rolling, and more.

Puff, Pass, Paint supplies the paint, canvases, and the brushes. Sometimes, they'll even include a ride (check details on their website). Participants will need to bring their own marijuana and a Bob Ross-style attitude. Keep in mind, cannabis consumption is not required to sign up for the class.

Activity #2: Get a Massage

Everyone should get a massage every once in a while. It's a method of self-care, and can help the body mend and release built up tension. And when you're in Seattle, a massage can open completely new doors of physical and mental relaxation . A local licensed massage professional offers her own version of therapy with Cannabis Health and Beauty Aid (CHABA) massages. A CBD -infused massage will add an extra layer of special relaxation to any Washington trip, beyond the typical scope of cannabis tourism.

Activity #3: Take a Bus Tour

Hop on the Seattle Weed Bus for a ride of a lifetime. Hold onto your hats and joints for this tour, which takes riders through downtown Seattle . You're able to experience popular destinations through an emerald lens – picking up guests at the Queen Anne District, Pike Place District, Pioneer Square and beyond, and taking them to different events throughout the city. Additionally, signing up as a member gets you a monthly newsletter and incudes transportation, food, event coordination, and more in a goodie bag when you join the tour.

Activity 4: Herbal Yoga

Yoga alone is a spiritual experience. When marijuana is added into the mix, the body can reach new heights. Yogasmith studio offers a fun cannabis-infused yoga class , allowing visitors to enjoy a different kind of Seattle weed activity . Located in the historic Georgetown district, Yogasmith asks that consumers come to class "pre-elevated," so make sure and explore local dispensaries beforehand with plenty of time to activate your green chi.

Activity 5: Multimedia Art Classes

In addition to offering their take on 21+ canna-yoga , Lifted also has a wide spectrum of classes meant to bring out the herbal artist in everyone. Themes and classes change each month and give something new to people who love to have fun while smoking pot. Sometimes there are painting classes, other times there are writing workshops. They have also been known to put on courses delving into joint rolling techniques , collage making, and poetry. Art, they know, is even better to experience with a little something extra.

Lifted is a Seattle organization with the sole purpose of building cannabis culture and community . They put on regular events to bridge the gap between marijuana fun and education, and bring passionate people together. When in the area, be sure to look Lifted up.

Activity 6: Get High and Explore

Step one: stop into one of Seattle's many Seattledispensaries . Step two: get high . (Though not in public.) Step three: explore.

Seattle is full of landmarks, parks, and attractions that are simply better when experienced under the influence of cannabis. The Space Needle is pointier and higher and grander than ever, the Fremont area seems even more whimsical, and the Pacific Space Center will blow your mind further into space with its interactive exhibits and IMAX films.

After getting your fill of cannabis, eat the foods that will curb your weed-influenced munchies . Stop for a cheap burger at Dick's Drive-In, comparable to In 'N Out. Head into Olympia Pizza and Spaghetti House III, which is known for a large-and-in-charge cheese explosion. The College Inn Pub is known for its burritos and nachos, while Ezell's Chicken has a reputation for juicy and tender chicken-filled menu. When you're stoned in the city , there's no shortage of restaurants that will have you floating on seventh heaven.

Regardless of which weed activities in Seattle you choose, have a blast. Enjoy the legalized cannabis – historic and flavorful – and explore the city through fun-filled events and opportunities that only happen in the Pacific Northwest's Emerald City.

Seattle’s Best Cannabis Shops and Dispensaries

By Sarah Anne Lloyd Photography by Lou Daprile March 23, 2021

marijuana tour seattle

Image: Lou Daprile

When Seattle’s cannabis dispensaries first started emerging in 2014, places like Uncle Ike’s and Cannabis City were a rarity. Now, more than 50 licensed shops operate within the city limits alone. It’s easier than ever to find your neighborhood connection—but these spots stand out from the pack.

Jump to Your Neighborhood:

Herb’s house  .

A converted Craftsman house on a corner in north Ballard near Phinney Ridge exudes a friendly neighborhood vibe that has earned it plenty of regulars. Budtenders are familiar with both the wares and the vendors behind them, and feature one every week for “vendor Thursday.” A rotating display of local art is a nice extra touch.  Medical endorsement

Have  A  Heart

Have  a Heart is the first dispensary in Washington s tate  to have a signed union contract. While it’s a chain—with several locations both here and  in  California—the Belltown outpost is its most vibrant, with bright, wild decor. Tall, well-organized displays along the back wall are easy to browse before heading to the front to check out.

Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis

Belltown's buzzy newcomer (Kemp himself only has a 5 percent stake) can feel like fan service, from the Sonics murals on the outside to the NBA Jam cabinets within. Its checkout system is a little awkward (don’t lose the ticket with your number on it), but the inventory is seriously giant, and displayed under what feels like miles of display counters—so it’s easy to discover something new.

marijuana tour seattle

SuperSonics legend Shawn Kemp surfaces a few times a week at his namesake shop to talk weed with fans. Another perk: Free parking in the back.

Capitol Hill

Thi s  dispensary (with a sibling location in Bremerton) is seriously high-design: Architecture firm Olson- Kundig  polished up a somewhat forlorn 1926 brick building that now sports an aquatic motif, including murals by artist Weirdo and glass-bubble product displays. It’s a relaxed  browsing   experience:  A  counter   for  browsing  and conversation  greets you up front; farther in,  a separate express line for those just grabbing online orders or a quick pre-roll.

Tucked just off 15th, this offbeat dispensary stocks organically and sustainably grown bud starting at super- low price  points—some eighths are less than $10.

Central District

A beloved neighborhood dispensary on Union goes out of its way to stock at least one quality, super-affordable option from every cannabis category—including tinctures and extracts, which are more likely to be expensive.  Medical endorsement

You don’t even need to talk to the staff to learn from their expertise: Clipboards line the shop’s walls from floor to ceiling, each giving the breakdown of a product available behind the counter. The budtenders write each description themselves out of experience. If you have trouble remembering the strain name, just unhook it from the wall and bring it up to the register with you.

marijuana tour seattle

Oz offers a wealth of info via clipboards—or you can just ask resident pup Marty.

This   mini-chain  recently set up shop in Fremont at the former site of Seattle’s oldest medical  dispensary ,  and  has a  pretty minimalist  interior—but you can  browse   a touch-screen menu before meeting with your budtender up front.

In the awkward zone between Queen Anne and Fremont, Hashtag shows off its fresh bud, edibles, concentrates, and glass behind separate, densely packed  counters ,   so  it’s easy to review   your options with a   budtender before checkout. Signs throughout the dispensary hype the work of the Last Prisoner Project nonprofit, which advocates for the release of people imprisoned by cannabis prohibition—they’re accepting donations.

Perched on the edge of Georgetown, this  shop curates  high-quality cannabis, then shows it off with vendor-specific deals and knowledgeable budtenders.

Herbn  Elements

An unassuming  Lake City storefront harbors a warm interior with user-friendly displays separated by category, including a broad inventory of glassware, vape equipment, and cute accessories. Budtenders can help you find something decent at any price point.  Medical endorsement

marijuana tour seattle

Budtenders as a rule tend to be kindhearted, but none more so than the crew at Herbn Elements.

Northgate/Aurora

Seattle tonics  .

The ambiance leaves something to be desired—this place occupies the erstwhile lobby of the run-down  forme r  Ambassador Inn Motel—but inside is a cavernous space jam-packed with options across all price points. Write down what you’re interested in on a dry-erase clipboard and bring it to the front, where a helpful staff member will answer questions and grab the goods. The place is especially known for its variety of concentrates.  Medical endorsement

Fweedom  Aurora

Don’t be fooled by this smaller shop—it has a huge selection of both classic and unique strains, and quick, knowledgeable staff to guide you. An offbeat array of paraphernalia, from glass to lighters, adds an extra flair.  Medical endorsement

Rainier Valley

Seattle cannabis co .  .

This is a good shop for people who don’t like being coddled too much: Giant,  well-organize d  displays line the walls, including a particularly dense  pre - roll  cabinet, and the staff are back behind the checkout window. When you do have questions, budtenders are eager to share their favorites.

Ganja Goddess

Under neon lights on First Avenue South, find one of the most pleasant cannabis-buying experiences in the city. The interior  evokes  a gently -   lit jewelry counter, so  browsing  is built into the process. The staff is helpful and available, but never pushy—and they keep track of your order as you  go ,  at your own pace. It’s a great place for newcomers to get the hang of dispensaries, but it’s a breath of fresh air for longtime customers, too.  Medical endorsement

Dockside was one of the more popular medical dispensaries before legalization, and they embrace those roots with a relaxing atmosphere and a separate area for medical consultations. Some of the clearly labeled cannabis is on  display , although scannable QR codes can give you the full menu. The “Cannabis Museum,” a small collection of cannabis-related antiques, sits in the back.  Medical endorsement

South Lake Union

A straightforward shop with a straightforward name: This little dispensary on Dexter Avenue between SLU and Queen Anne will get you taken care of with a fun selection and friendly staff. Outside of quarantine, there’s a vendor visit every Friday with special deals.

Wallingford

American mary  .

This low-key establishment has cannabis at every price point, clearly laid out on a menu projected on the wall. There’s a deal for every day of the week, including a weekly grower showcase.

West Seattle

Cozy and friendly Canna West Seattle has a killer staff picks shelf, happy hour deals, and budtenders that remember your face. The Culture Shop, a sibling business across the street, is packed with well-designed cannabis accessories, CBD products, and a few artisan wares that have nothing to do with cannabis at all.

Women-owned Canna extends its welcoming vibe to an accessories shop across the street (below).

Outside Seattle

The novel tree  .

An  unassumin g  strip mall exterior, belies a boutique atmosphere, upbeat staff, and a  display   of small, pretty cannabis accessories that make you want to linger for longer than one typically does in a dispensary. Behind the counter, find a vast selection of pre-rolls, vape cartridges, and extracts.   Medical endorsement

Puff N Chill

This Lynnwood shop is located right on 99, but its woodsy vibe transports you far off the highway for a low-pressure  browsing   experience. It’s small but well-staffed with friendly folks eager to tell you about their new favorites.  Take a peek  at the clever glass for sale, too.   Medical endorsement

Evergreen Market

The South Renton location, one of five  total , sits right off both 167 and 405, making it an easy stop for many South King County suburbs. It’s also a great dispensary, with a lodge-like interior, engaging product displays, and budtenders that can tell you the whole story of your cannabis from seed to shelf.

When you first walk into Clutch, you might notice the glass on display first—pipes that look like skateboards, pipes with delicate line art. Keep going for staff with an encyclopedic knowledge of their products and an  edibles  display that barely fits along the whole back wall.

Emerald Leaves

A laid-back atmosphere keeps customers from feeling rushed, and an educated staff stands ready to answer any questions. Bright lights and glass counters make browsing easy. This is one of Washington's few Black-owned cannabis businesses, too. Check the website before you go—Emerald Leaves partners with local nonprofits for food and supply drives. Medical endorsement

White Center

On White Center’s main 16th Avenue drag, Lucky has  easy-to-browse   displays and plenty of room to move around. The shop’s full spectrum of CBD ratios stands out, especially in tinctures and beverages.

This longtime White Center shop is a little scrappy, but has positive vibes all around, from the cheery murals on the outside to hand-painted labels in the display counters.  Nimbin  has a deep catalog of flower from growers big and small, along with a greater variety of edibles than most.   Medical endorsement

Cloning Cannabis: How to Clone Marijuana Plants – Beginners Guide

Cloning sounds scientific and inaccessible. To an extent, it is, even when the word refers to cannabis cultivation and not the thing scientists occasionally do to sheep. But there are reasons most large-scale cannabis producers rely heavily on cloned plants for their production. Predictability. Quality. Speed of production. Profit. It’s a method of growing that […]

Being the first state to pass Medical Marijuana in 1999, California was a favorite in being the first to legalize recreational in 2010. However, fate would have it that a rec law would not be passed until prop 64 in 2016. Although Washington, Oregon and Colorado all got the jump on the The Golden State, it's long and sometimes jaded history with Cannabis dating back to the 1960's has California poised to be a leader in Cannabis tourism.

Where to Buy Weed in (Almost) Every Neighborhood in Seattle

You won’t have trouble finding pot shops in seattle, but here are a few of our favorites.

marijuana tour seattle

Canna West Seattle

WEST SEATTLE

Maryam Mirnateghi’s pot shop Canna West Seattle is housed in a 1920s Craftsman-style home on California Avenue Southwest, and it is worlds away from those impersonal pot shops. Before the shop opened in 2016, Mirnateghi spoke about her vision of the place: “It’s going to be clean and classy, but it’s not going to be pretentious. It’s going to be really cozy and very different from the other stores we have in the city.” (ANA SOFIA KNAUF)

Cannabis City

Ah, Cannabis City, Seattle’s first pot shop. Or, as they’ve dubbed themselves, “the pot shop heard around the world.” Dr. James Lathrop, the shop’s owner, is whip-crack smart when it comes to cannabis. He’s a doctor of nursing practice, and I’d argue that he’s more knowledge- able about pot and its various medicinal applications than a traditional allopathic practitioner. They have more than 100 varieties of pre-roll, and they are located a mere one block from the Sodo light rail station. (TOBIAS COUGHLIN-BOGUE)

Dockside Cannabis

Dockside’s Sodo shop is emblematic of the new direction in pot retailing brought on by legalization: big, open floor plans, lots of light, and classy decor. Dockside’s got all that, and a cannabis museum to boot. That’s right: An entire corner of their store is devoted to the history and science of cannabis, including selections from the Wirtshafter collection, Ohio cannabis activist Don Wirtshafter’s hoard of vintage cannabis medicine bottles. It sounds bland when I put it that way, but it’s awesome, a fascinating physical reminder that pot used to be both legal and benign. There are also locations in Ballard, Green Lake, and Shoreline. (TOBIAS COUGHLIN-BOGUE)

Have a Heart

DOWNTOWN/BELLTOWN

Patrons are greeted with an enormous, LED-lit joint sculpture upon entering, as well as a chandelier with a quarter pound of Grandaddy Kush encased in glass. If that’s not enough to awe you, there’s the 50-foot “Wall of Weed.” It’s also close to Pike Place Market—nothing beats smoking a pre-roll on the waterfront (just don’t let cops see you), watching the ferries roll in for a bit, and then noshing your way through the market’s vast array of edible offerings. There are locations in Greenwood and Fremont, too. (TOBIAS COUGHLIN-BOGUE)

Lux Pot Shop

BALLARD, LAKE CITY, BELLTOWN

Lux unofficially bills itself as the “Nordstrom of pot shops.” Officially, their tagline is “Community. Culture. Cannabis.” Their store is objectively gorgeous, and the service is definitely Nordstrom-esque. The budtenders, many of whom are transplants from more traditional service-industry jobs, all seem genuinely happy to be here, and genuinely excited about pot. Lux is also quite conveniently located next to many of Ballard’s cultural and culinary activities. They have locations in Belltown and Lake City, too. (TOBIAS COUGHLIN-BOGUE)

The Reef Cannabis

CAPITOL HILL

You’ll know you’re at The Reef when you see a glowing building featuring an underwater mural with a giant portrait of Jacque Cousteau on its side. Once you pass through the glass doors, you’ll be hit with bright lights, the music that the kids are listening to these days, and hundreds of cannabis products, including a wall of pre-rolls, all kinds of flower, vapes and glassware, oils, edibles, topicals, and more. Real estate investors Adam Simon and Aaron Bennett own the place, and in interviews Simon says he doesn’t just want to sell pot, he wants to give back to the community. To that end, the company says it donates 5% of its profits to one of three nonprofits. You vote on where the money goes at the end of your transaction. Staff here is super friendly and happy to help on your terms, but if you want to cut down on human interactions, then you can order online and/or on the store’s app. (RICH SMITH)

Ruckus Recreational

CAPITOL HILL AND FREMONT

The space is tiny, but the aesthetics are on point: walls filled with paintings, drawings, old timey portraits, and collage art, plus cabinets stocked with curios sure to delight and beguile. The cannabis products are in two countertop glass cabinets that look like they used to hold rare butterfly specimens. The space feels almost like a closet filled with magic. But they have everything you need. Not only do they have a nice range of products and price points, there’s always good music playing and the staff is warm and unpretentious, often wearing plaid, unlike the uniforms you find at some other stores. (TOBIAS COUGHLIN-BOGUE)

Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis

BELLTOWN AND SODO

Six-time NBA All-Star and legendary Seattle Supersonics power forward Shawn “Reign Man” Kemp opened the first Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis location on October 30, 2020, along with industry veterans Matt Schoenlein and Ramsey Hamide (two of the co-founders of Main Street Marijuana). In February 2023 Kemp and Co. opened a second location in Sodo in a cool old 3,500-square-foot bank building. Kemp may be a minority owner (just 5%) but images of his iconic dunk form and game-worn jerseys decorate both shops. (EVEROUT STAFF)

Day-tripping pot-tour startups see wine-industry future

Some in the marijuana industry dream of vineyard-like tours and cannabis lounges, but so far pot tourism has been limited in Washington.

Share story

Evan Bush

Jill Lane, master grower at Sky High Gardens on Seattle’s Harbor Island, uncaps jar after jar of golf-ball-size marijuana buds and allows her guests sniffs of Bubblicious, Super Silver Goo and Green Crack.

“What kind of high is that?” asks Louise Avery, gesturing to one of the jars.

“This is for daytime: taking a hike. Beach volleyball,” explains Lane to the group of visitors with Kush Tourism, a Seattle-based cannabis company . Lane continues describing strains as if the visitors surrounding the table were middle-age women in a Yankee Candle store.

Chocolate heaven, she tells the group, is “earthy and dank.” Seattle Haze is subtle: “If you have a joint in your purse or pocket, you’re not going to announce it to the world.” Dutch Treat “almost smells like B.O. … like somebody forgot to shower.”

Avery, a concierge at a downtown Seattle hotel, was one of three people the tour company took to Sky High Gardens that recent day. The others were Alaskans Zach Craft and Conrad Schwartz, who are considering starting a marijuana business when commercial-marijuana sales begin there.

Since legalization, this state’s pot industry has dreamed of vineyard-like tours at pot farms in the rolling hills of Eastern Washington and cannabis lounges where visitors and locals commune over marijuana vapor wafting through the air.

But hotels have been hesitant to tout themselves as pot-friendly, visitors have few legal locations to consume and only a few tourism companies are operating.

As much as the industry hopes the scene at Sky High Gardens is a harbinger of tourism to come, it could just as well be a mirage.

Viable attraction?

Last summer, tourists made up much of the recreational market. Step into a pot store and you’d find wide-eyed Canadians in line before a Blue Jays game or mystified Midwesterners buying a couple grams just because they could.

Will outside interest in legal pot wear off with time? Are people coming to Seattle specifically for marijuana or just curious while they’re here?

Those are the questions David Blandford, the vice president of communications for Visit Seattle, wants answered. He said the tourism-promotion nonprofit is open-minded about pot and will see if tourists flock to shops this summer or if “the novelty has worn off” before considering a marijuana promotion or advertising effort.

“We don’t have the same data that we have about wine tourism, or LGBT tourism,” said Blandford. “Nor are we able to detect that there’s this untapped market.”

Blandford said legal ambiguity between state and federal governments on marijuana makes it “hard to know what we can promote and advertise.”

Seattle hotels are taking a similar stance.

“We as an industry haven’t figured out how to deal or get on board with marijuana tourism,” said David Watkins, president of the Seattle Hotel Association. “As far as marijuana goes, it’s just wait and see.”

Startups jump in

As key players hesitate, startups are filling the void.

The guide leading Kush Tourism’s excursion, Chase Nobles, founded the company with partner Michael Gordon. The two met kayaking and hatched the company in June 2013; they’ve since grown their business to seven employees. In addition to tours, the company markets pot-friendly lodging (mostly bed-and-breakfasts) and rents high-end vaporizers. The two also have launched a marketing company called Kush Creative Group.

Dressed in shiny dress shoes and a polo tucked into pressed khakis, Nobles looked more like a church youth-group leader than any marijuana stereotype.

For $175, he took the two Alaska men to four sites: A glass studio in the Chinatown International District; the grow operation; a pot-testing lab and Uncle Ike’s Pot Shop, a Seattle retail store. Some tours also conclude at the Bacon Mansion, a Capitol Hill bed-and-breakfast where those on tour can consume what they’ve purchased.

This isn’t a tour for those simply looking to get high.

“You can get stoned anywhere in this country,” said Nobles as he drove the Kush Tourism van. “Our tour’s more about education … we take you to see something you can’t otherwise see.”

Schwartz and Craft, for example, spent the Sky High Gardens portion of the tour grilling the growers on the finer points of marijuana cultivation.

Avery, the concierge, said she joined the tour at Sky High Gardens to educate herself and see a cannabis producer firsthand. She said she often gets questions about cannabis from guests and wants to have accurate information for them.

Throughout the tour, Nobles spoke with authority about complicated state Liquor Control Board rules and legislation working its way through the statehouse. He ably summarized a rather technical explanation of marijuana-lab tests.

Gordon said the company’s clientele is mostly 30- to 60-year-old professionals. Kush tours are designed to feel like a vineyard visit, where you “meet people in the fields.”

Said Gordon: “You leave feeling good about wine. That’s what we’re trying to do with cannabis.”

Wine as a model

The marijuana industry encourages the comparison to wine, a culturally accepted luxury good. The Washington State Wine Commission estimates wine tourism as a $1 billion industry in the state. Some in the pot industry see that as the model.

Longtime medical-cannabis grower Alex Cooley is developing his Solstice brand for the recreational market. Cooley sees low-end cannabis’ analog as beer, concentrates as spirits and top-shelf cannabis as fine wine.

“We personally identify Solstice with wine,” he said. “More romance, more about the region, more tannins and terroir — that passion that comes into it.”

Joby Sewell, a grower at AuricAG in Sodo, said a self-appointed marijuana bourgeoise chasing flavor profiles and particular kinds of highs is developing.

“Connoisseurs are sprouting up,” said Sewell, who left his job as a wine-sales representative to help found the grow operation.

Cooley said the trope of an elderly aficionado swirling a glass of wine translates to pot.

“Talk to me in 30 to 40 years: You’ll see me swirling a glass jar (of marijuana) and saying, ‘Oh my god, this is an amazing OG Kush: I can smell the region.’ ”

Josh McDonald of the Washington Wine Institute said he doesn’t see marijuana competing with wine.

“They’re basically just being born as an industry in the state of Washington, whereas we’ve been planting grapes for several decades and making wines for 30 or 40 years,” said McDonald. “People come to Washington to go to wineries and experience it. I don’t know if they’ll do that for marijuana.”

Some in the pot industry see the wine comparison as a stretch, too. Greg James, who publishes industry magazine Marijuana Venture, said the pot market is too focused on potency.

“Robert Parker doesn’t drink wine to get drunk,” said James, referring to the famous wine critic.

He also said the pot industry suffers from the disorganization that comes with birth on the black market. “Anyone can invent a strain,” said James. “There’s no one to verify what that actually is.”

Cannabis researcher Brad Douglass, the scientific director at The Werc Shop, a state-approved testing lab, said as the industry’s sophistication grows, so will consumers’ tastes.

His company tests for terpenes, compounds in marijuana (and also found in wine) that create flavor profiles. Aggregated terpene data, he said, can “fingerprint” strains. So far his company has identified about 100 strains, which could provide the industry a standard akin to heredity for wine varietals.

Douglass believes the pot industry needs sommelier-like education to create the luxury brands you see in wine.

“You can push that all you want, but it would fall on deaf noses, so to speak,” said Douglass.

Taking small steps

Growers say regulations would need to change for tourism to take off, too.

“You can’t smoke at the farm. It’s pretty boring after a little while. You can’t touch the plants,” said Jeremy Moberg, who runs CannaSol Farms, an outdoor grow in Okanogan County. “I’m having a hard time seeing the whole tourism thing.”

How could it work?

“You’re going to have to have retail at the farms to make tourism work,” said Moberg, adding that Amsterdam-esque coffee shops would help, too.

In Seattle, City Attorney Pete Holmes has been pushing lawmakers for marijuana-vapor lounges since before pot stores opened, but no proposal has materialized.

For now, though, pot tourism is taking small steps: Kush Tourism plans to distribute to hotels 120,000 tourism-map brochures with information on the difference between recreational stores and medical dispensaries. Avery, who is the vice president of the Seattle Hotel Concierge Association, plans to share what she learned with her fellow concierges at her organization’s next meeting.

“It’s a niche market. It’s not a massive boom,” said Kush Tourism’s Gordon.

Not yet, anyway.

The Range of Products at Seattle Cannabis Co.

Cannabis culture has progressed. Marijuana’s numerous advantages are becoming widely known. Because of this increased awareness and acceptance, the methods for obtaining those benefits are more versatile, sophisticated, and numerous than ever before.

Our dispensary in Seattle is a one-stop shop for traditional buds, flowers, and cannabis edibles—but we also offer some of the new alternative forms of marijuana consumption that are emerging today, such as edibles, concentrates, tinctures, topicals, and the ever-faithful joint.

Pre-Rolled Marijuana Joints, Buds, and Flowers

The classic smoke may be the most satisfying way to use marijuana. Pre-rolled joints and loose-leaf buds are by far the most traditional ways to consume cannabis, and they are also the quickest ways to get the full effect. Passing the joint is a time-honored social ritual, and many inspiring moments have occurred as a result of lighting a bowl, sharing a pipe, or, more recently, vaping flowers.

Smoking cannabis provides near-instant gratification, with the peak high occurring around a half-hour after ingestion and the effects lasting anywhere from one to three hours. Seattle Cannabis Co collaborates with the top, most ethical recreational cannabis growers in Seattle and throughout the state to bring our customers the most sought-after and safe strains of cannabis in their purest, most potent form.

Cannabis edibles have skyrocketed in popularity and reputation with the gradual legalization of marijuana across the country, owing to their convenience and discretion. Today’s cannabis edible consumer has a vast array of options that is expanding by the second.

Most marijuana edibles are extremely potent because many of them are made with highly concentrated forms of cannabis, such as infused oils or butter. The manner in which edibles are consumed, as well as the taker’s metabolism, have a significant impact on their effectiveness. Cannabis taken directly through the mouth, such as with suckers and lozenges, can have a much more immediate effect than foods processed by other body parts, such as chocolates or cookies.

When it comes to edibles, Seattle Cannabis Co goes beyond the brownie. We collaborate with established providers to bring our customers the best marijuana edibles in Seattle in all forms, including:

  • Hard Candies
  • Drinks and Sodas
  • Chocolate bars
  • Lozenges and tablets
  • And, yes, brownies.

Wax and Concentrates

These delivery methods get right to the point. Cannabis concentrates are similar to fruit juice concentrates or soda syrup in that they contain all of the most potent aspects of cannabis, such as aroma and cannabinoids, but not the more benign or ineffective components, such as leaves and stems. Concentrates are more powerful and fast-acting than smoking the flower because the more effective properties of cannabis are extracted naturally from the plant.

One of the most popular types of concentrate is wax or shatter, which is created by infusing the cannabis plant with a solvent such as butane. This method yields a resin that is typically sticky, occasionally frosty or crumbly, and significantly more robust. A typical wax concentrate can contain up to three times the THC of a marijuana plant. As a result, concentrates are in high demand for medicinal or pain-relieving applications (and not always the best choice for inexperienced or novice consumers).

Concentrates and wax are typically consumed by dabbing—generally, vaporizing and inhaling hot resin with the aid of a rig and torch—or, more recently, by vaping products and electronic nails that can adjust and regulate the source of heat. To enhance the smoking experience, a small amount of concentrate can be sprinkled on buds or flowers. Seattle Cannabis Co’s staff can assist you in locating the most potent cannabis concentrates in Seattle and guiding you through the process of using them.

With one major exception, cannabis tinctures are very similar to concentrates. Tinctures typically use high-percentage alcohol as a solvent, such as vodka, and the alcohol is left in the final product rather than being filtered out. This means that tinctures are consumed orally, as opposed to concentrates, which must be heated and inhaled.

Tinctures are ideal for regulating marijuana dosage and are good entry points for those who are new to cannabis consumption. Users can place a couple of tincture drops beneath the tongue with a dropper or blend the tincture with juice, smoothies, or other edibles.

Cannabis tinctures have been used for a long time. Tinctures were the most popular method of cannabis consumption in America prior to Prohibition. With the spread of legalization and the rise of alternative forms of use, tinctures have returned to the spotlight and are now available at the majority of legal dispensaries. Seattle Cannabis Co collaborates closely with providers to bring the best cannabis tinctures to Seattle.

Cannabis-infused creams, lotions, sprays, oils, and balms are rapidly changing public perception of medicinal marijuana. Cannabinoids applied topically are becoming increasingly popular among those seeking relief from pain, skin irritation, muscle soreness, and other physical ailments. Recent research indicates that topical cannabis may be an effective treatment for a variety of conditions such as psoriasis, arthritis, shingles, eczema, and others.

Cannabis topicals are ideal for those who want the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the high because they typically lack intoxicating or psychoactive effects. Seattle Cannabis Co carries a wide selection of some of the most effective cannabis topicals in Seattle for pain relief, recovery, massage, and anti-inflammation.
