EMBRACING YOUR

Limitations.

‘Embracing Your Limitations’ pours scorn on the self-help genre pointing at and exploding the mythology of realising your dreams. Shredding the need to change, transform, and activate. The thrust of ‘Embracing Your Limitations’ is reconciling yourself to yourself, accepting your failings, working within your limits, and being happy. At its little comic heart this self-help parody is actually a self-help book. Embrace your limitations stop competing, stop comparing, and enjoy the massive life exhale that that will deliver you. It’s time to quit and live your life on your own terms

LAWRENCE MOONEY

I have been lauded as one of the best comedians in this country, The Sydney Morning Herald wrote,  “he’s a fierce and fearless hunter of the funny and deserves his reputation as a master of the form.”

Then this from the Herald Sun,  “consistently funny, insightful, well-written, beautifully paced, well-honed stand up.”  You get it, I’m funny.

I’m on the tele too. I’m a regular on  The Front Bar on Seven  and  The Back Page on Fox Sports.   Last year I was part of The John Cleese roast on Seven and got to rub John’s bunions but that’s another story.

I hosted  Dirty Laundry Live on the ABC  for three years, I’ve also appeared on  Have You Been Paying Attention? .

For three years I was on Triple M Sydney with my breakfast show Moonman In The Morning.

Most recently I have been touring around the country with the hit live show,  The Comedians , starring my good mates Mick Molloy, Marty Sheargold and Sam Pang.

I love the stage and nothing can keep me away from doing stand-up.  Currently I’m touring nationally with my show Pigeonhole, one reviewer in Adelaide said this about me  “The man is a sheer comic genius” .  A bit over the top but pretty accurate.

I’m now also an acclaimed author with my parody Self- Help book  Embracing Your Limitations .  It’s funny with a bit of zen wisdom at its comic heart available online at all good book sellers and in book shops that have a dodgy louvered door section.

Check out dates on the website and I’ll see you soon.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON FEVER

The much-loved book about growing up in the Suburbs, Saturday Afternoon Fever is now a smash hit podcast. Join comedian Matthew Hardy, the author of Saturday Afternoon Fever, as he reads from his best-selling book about a footy fan whose dreams are denied, with legendary Australian stand up comic Lawrence Mooney.

As they read Saturday Afternoon Fever, Matthew and Lawrence constantly digress into the wonderful, hilarious, nostalgic worlds of their childhoods, teenage years and into their idiotic young adulthoods. As contemporary men they discuss relationships, the modern world, ethics, history and philosophy. The big question – Will they ever finish the book?

Lawrence Mooney: Embracing Your Limitations

The famed Malcolm Turnbull impersonator takes the stage as guru Mooney for a raunchy show about embracing your inner loser

Time Out says

It’s that time of the year when you’re confronted with how little progress you’ve made towards your overly optimistic New Year’s resolutions. As the guilt and shame start to settle in, you might be tempted to use this as an opportunity to take a long, hard look at yourself; perhaps you’ll be inspired to buy a self-help book or enrol in mindfulness classes to try to make yourself a better person. But instead, why not save some time, effort and money by opting to attend this show by Lawrence Mooney on the merits of simply accepting that you’re a loser?

Mooney is a self-described self-help addict and has unsuccessfully tried it all: books, classes, breathing exercises, mantras, influencers - you name it, he’s tried it. Armed with a giant flip pad, Mooney (who is perhaps best known for his spot-on Malcolm Turnbull impression ) shares his top tips, including killing your dreams and accepting that you’re simply not good enough.

On paper, that probably sounds depressing, but thanks to Mooney’s expert comedic timing, you’ll be laughing too much to realise the true depths of your despair. Across the hour, a few of Mooney’s jokes didn’t quite hit the mark; namely, some tired quips about the ‘woke left’ with no tie-in to the overarching theme of the show. But these moments are few and far between, with most of Mooney’s set leaving the audience in stitches.

When the hour is up, you might feel two things: motivated to be your true (awful) self and unsure of where to go from here. Don’t fret: Mooney wasn’t sharing this advice out of the kindness of his heart; it’s also partly to promote his book of the same name , where you can get even more of his de-motivational tips.

Lawrence Mooney’s Embracing Your Limitations is at the Athenaeum Theatre from March 29 to April 9. Tickets start at $35 and are available through the MICF website .

Lawrence Mooney on what happens when comedians tour together

LAWRENCE Mooney has revealed what goes on when a bunch of comedians tour together. Their behaviour is almost as bad as that of rock stars.

WHEN a group of stand-up comedians go on tour together, things can often get out of hand.

They’re not as bad as rock stars, but according to one of Australia’s most loved comedians, Lawrence Mooney , they’re not far off.

“If there’s a bunch of you and you decide to have a quiet night, no one will let you do that,” said the funny man, who happily recounted some of his wildest nights for news.com.au.

“Fleety ( Greg Fleet ) and I and Damian Callinan were watching the FA Cup one night. We got a little carried away in a hotel room in Wagga Wagga. We destroyed a bin and chair, set a curtain on fire and did some other stuff. We were just kind of goading one another and getting pretty pissed and overexcited.

“In the morning, Fleety had to leave early and obviously we’d woken up the hotel owners and so I came clean and told them what we’d done and the woman said, ‘You people from Melbourne are nice people so we won’t be charging you. All I want to say is that I’m really disappointed.’ That was worse than actually being charged for the damage.

“When you’re with comedians, you’re just trying to show off and get laughs from each other, they’re the best laughs.”

To be fair, Mooney’s story about Fleet is nowhere near as shocking as some of those that Fleet himself revealed in his recent book , These Things Happen .

Another person who Mooney’s shared plenty of laughs with over the years is Fiona O’Loughlin.

“We’ve been on the road together blind and we’ve been on the road together completely sober,” said Mooney of his comedy pal, who has been quite open about her battle with the bottle in the past.

“One of our biggest benders was when we were in LA for Last Comic Standing in 2007. We went back to the hotel room and in American minibars they not only have the fridge stocked but they also have a cupboard with bottles lined up. There might be 20 or 30 bottles of booze.

Fiona O’Loughlin is now happy and healthy according to Mooney.

“We just destroyed this minibar. We ended up legless and it was one of the most fun nights of all time.

“O’Loughlin wakes up the next morning and says, ‘What are you doing in my room? Why are you in my bed?’ And I said, ‘OK, it’s MY room and it’s MY bed and you passed out.’ And I said, ‘By the way, I only took your boots off and I didn’t have a look, OK?’”

Mooney is about to hit the road once again but he’s adamant his partying days are behind him.

“I don’t have the stamina anymore,” he said.

In his new stand-up show, Surely Not , the host of ABC’s Dirty Laundry Live takes the audience on a sort of road trip about life and death.

It’s based on the events that took place when he and his brothers went overseas together after the death of their uncle Harry.

“It occurred to me that essentially we’re all going to die and we all ignore the fact and we put it off, but it’s coming for all of us,” said Mooney.

Was it hard to find humour in death though?

“Comedy uses a lot of analogies from death,” said Mooney.

“Comedians die if they don’t get a laugh on stage. If they do, they kill. It’s all wound up in death. So I didn’t find it too difficult finding laughs in it, because life is essentially quite absurd.”

Lawrence Mooney will start touring Surely Not! in October. Check out the tour dates here .

The legendary American rock god has officially hit billionaire status, making him one of the world’s richest musicians.

Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh, whom he shares with ex Angelina Jolie, has landed a savage blow against her famous father in her bid to drop his surname.

The Duke of Sussex has been photographed his entire life but there is one moving image of him that the world is unlikely to ever see.
