kauai sea turtle snorkeling tour

Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate "rain forests of the sea," one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.

All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include

  • Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners.
  • Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR.
  • High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear.
  • Lunch and drinks

Beginning Snorkelers

Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt. Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time.

For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.

Snorkel Gear

Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures.

  • Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!)
  • "Dry" easy purge snorkels.
  • Comfortable fins in all sizes.
  • Snorkel vests - for buoyancy.
  • Non-fog spray

Kauai Snorkel Tips

Always use property fitting snorkel gear.

Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety.

Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses

What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.

Safety First

If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips:

  • When in doubt, don’t go out.
  • Always snorkel with a buddy.
  • Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far.
  • For beginners, going with an experienced snorkerler is recommended.

Who Can Snorkel?

Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.

What Do I Need To Bring?

Are there safety concerns.

If you are snorkeling with Capt. Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in Kauai: Top Spots

A Sea Turtle swimming at a Kauai Beach

Sea turtles are graceful and enchanting creatures that can be found in almost every ocean basin around the world. They’ve been around for more than 150 million years and grow to as long as three or four feet. It is estimated that sea turtles can live to 80 to 100 years or even older.

In Hawaii, sea turtles are known as “honu” (hoh-noo). When they aren’t resting on the sands, they can often be seen frolicking in the ocean, much to the delight of snorkelers and divers fortunate enough to catch sight of them.

Native Hawaiians consider the honu sacred. According to local belief, consider yourself blessed if they come alongside you when swimming or snorkeling.

If you want to experience the thrill of seeing these fascinating reptiles up close, the island of Kauai and the Napali Coast offer many opportunities to snorkel alongside sea turtles. Here, the honu can frequently be seen with other sea creatures such as the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, the state fish of Hawaii, or reef triggerfish and angelfish.

Here are the best places in Hawaii to snorkel with sea turtles:

Snorkel with Sea Turtles at Poipu Beach

Located in the sunny south section of the island, Poipu Beach is known as one of the finest beaches in Hawaii and even in the entire United States. That’s hardly surprising given its golden sands, crystal clear waters, tropical conditions all year long, and abundant marine life.

Of course, the presence of honu is a large part of what makes Poipu Beach such an inviting spot for snorkelers, divers, and marine life enthusiasts. The right side of the cove is especially enchanting, with plenty of fish, monk seals, and turtles enjoying the crystal clear waters.

See Sea Turtles at Ke’e Beach

Another worthwhile spot to visit is Ke’e Beach, which is located to the west of Kauai’s north shore. A top-rated destination for snorkelers and divers, the beach also attracts many casual beachgoers due to its breathtaking views and relaxing atmosphere.

Summer is the best time to head to Ke’e Beach, as it gives you the perfect opportunity to catch the honu in their natural habitats. The beach is as close as you can get to the fabled Na Pali Coast, and you have added advantage of seeing a host of enchanting marine creatures such as butterflyfish, unicornfish, needlefish, and goatfish.

Haena Beach Sea Turtle Experience

Haena Beach is an absolute paradise of a location, combining lush tropical jungles with gleaming white sand beaches. There are plenty of things you can do to while away the time, from walking along the shore and exploring the Tunnels to swimming and snorkeling in the refreshing waters.

If you are there mainly to see the honu, a visit to the Tunnels should be at the top of your list. There are always a few of them lounging about, and if you are lucky, a couple might even join you on your swim. As a bonus, there are also schools of colorful fish that populate the area, including parrotfish, sergeant major, and coronet fish.

The Honu of Anini Beach

Anini Beach is another popular spot on the north shore of Kauai. Like many beaches on the island, the waters are clear and tranquil throughout the year, making the place ideally suited for families with kids.

Anini also has many picturesque areas with excellent picnic grounds and walking trails strewn with shade trees. And unlike Hanalei and Poipu, the beach never gets too crowded, even during peak tourist season.

“Anini” is actually Hawaiian for dwarfish, but there are many honu in the area as well. The beach also gives you the rare opportunity to see manta rays, seahorses, and eels on the coral reef.

Sea Turtles at Lawai Beach

Finally, check out Lawai Beach for an exciting snorkeling spot that is ideally suited for experienced snorkelers and divers. Ground zero for water sports and all sorts of outdoor activities, the beach offers amenities such as showers and restrooms and even a beach house restaurant by the bay.

If marine life is what you are after, Lawai Beach has plenty to offer as well. Along with sea turtles, you also get to see schools of colorful fish frolicking in the clear waters in and around the reef.

There you have it: the best places in Hawaii to snorkel with sea turtles. If you are planning on a trip to the islands any time soon, make sure to schedule a  snorkeling tour along the Na Pali Coast  for a fascinating experience that you won’t soon forget!

Hi,was wondering if there would be anyway children could do this snorkeling trip. They are 3 years and 1. Always in water and boat (live on private lake wakeboard all summer).

' src=

Aloha Melissa! This tour children must be 5 years of age or older. It really is all about safety. This tour enters the ocean in a rocky and wavy area. I would recommend this for only people who are confident swimmers and experienced snorkelers. The Blue Dolphin Charters Napali Snorkel Tour is for children 2 yrs and up. This is a great day for everyone, out on the water, sightseeing the Napali, snorkeling, dolphins etc. I would highly recommend this tour: http://kauaivacationtours.com/kauai-activities/blue-dolphin-sailing/

This tour was the absolute best thing we did on our honeymoon. Our guide was beyond fantastic and took extra time to walk us through the process of snorkeling (since it was our first time) and show us all of the beautiful wildlife in his ‘office’. It was the most amazing and spectacular experience and I would go on this tour every day if I could! 10 out of 10.

Snorkeling is one of the best ways to experience the Hawaiian Islands and connect with nature! While Hawaii is a stunning destination above water, snorkeling reveals another world lying just beneath the waves. Wildlife lovers can look forward to spotting sea turtles, eels, and colorful fish all while swimming along abundant reef systems and cruising Kauai’s famously stunning coastline.

The Garden Isle is a haven for snorkelers, but finding a good spot to do so on Kauai isn’t as straightforward as other destinations like Maui . You might notice that many snorkeling spots on Kauai can easily be affected by both weather and ocean conditions, especially if you’re hoping to snorkel off the North Shore in winter when most locations are completely off-limits.

From the best tour for families to exhilarating rafting trips and a visit to the “Forbidden Isle”, these are the best snorkeling tours on Kauai!

Best Snorkeling Tours from Kauai’s North Shore

Napali snorkel adventure from hanalei.

The name says it all, this snorkeling tour is an adventure ! You’ll get the chance to drive beneath waterfalls and through sea caves as well as spot playful monk seals and spinner dolphins all while exploring the breathtaking NaPali Coast both above and below the water. This tour leaves from Hanalei Bay and is only suitable for those who are age 4 and up. A light lunch with sandwiches, juice, and water is included, as well as all the snorkeling gear you’ll need!

This tour is onboard the 32’ Cave Catamaran. Guests will need to make sure they can climb a ladder in light surf for boarding and for getting out of the water when it comes time to snorkel. Because this snorkeling tour is more on the adventurous side it’s also not suitable for pregnant women or those who’ve had a recent surgery.

This is a great option if you want to combine a boat trip to see the NaPali Coast and snorkeling. It’s a two-for-one! Keep in mind that this tour only operates from March to October due to Kauai’s intense north shore swell. This is an adventurous snorkeling tour and there’s no bathroom on board the boat. The ride back to Hanalei Bay is nicknamed the “Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride” for a reason! It’s bound to be bumpy.

Best NaPali Coast Snorkeling Tours

Tours that go along Kauai’s NaPali Coast are an adventure! While this is one of the draws of this kind of snorkeling tour, it can be too much for some. Keep in mind that Kauai’s north shore has notoriously strong currents and you’ll need to be a strong swimmer to partake in the fun. It can also be a rough ride to get where you’re going. If you’re prone to seasickness, this is definitely something to keep in mind!

Both the abundance of wildlife, unique snorkeling sites, and stunning views on your way to your final destination are what make snorkeling on Kauai unforgettable.

Ni’ihau and NaPali Super Tour

This snorkeling tour with Holo Holo Charters is really special because it gives you the opportunity to see Hawaii’s “Forbidden Island”, Ni’ihau . You’ll cruise along the verdant cliffs and crags of the NaPali Coast on a huge, 65’ catamaran before stopping just offshore Ni’ihau to snorkel and explore its pristine reefs.

Although you can’t actually step foot on the island itself (they don’t call it the Forbidden Island for nothing), seeing this off-the-beaten-path locale from the water is a truly special experience and something very few visitors get to do. Even better, this company is locally owned and their boats were designed and built on the island!

Departing from Port Allen on Kauai’s leeward side, you certainly won’t go hungry on this tour as both a continental breakfast and a deli-style lunch are provided. Beer and wine are also served after you’re finished with the snorkeling portion of the tour. All your snorkeling gear is included, as well as floating noodles for breaks in between your snorkeling sessions. This is a seven-hour tour that runs year-round and is only suitable for guests who are age 5 and up.

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, this is it! There’s even a chance to see whales during their migration .

NaPali Snorkel Sail

If there’s a best snorkeling tour on Kauai for families, it might be this one! From a super fun waterslide to an included lunch that makes planning easy as pie, this is another tour with Holo Holo Charters on their beautiful Leila 50’ catamaran. Unlike other snorkeling tours on Kauai, this tour is smooth sailing (mostly) but still has an age limit of 5 and older.

You’ll have five hours to frolic in the sea, sailing along the beautiful NaPali Coast, including 50 full minutes of snorkeling. Both a continental breakfast and a deli-style lunch are served alongside soft drinks and later both beer and wine – the perfect finale to your day on the water.

Makana Catamaran NaPali Coast Tours

Looking for a customized experience without the sky-high cost of a private tour? This is it!

With four different vessels to choose from, Makana Catamaran Tours has options ranging in size from 32-49’. As you might be able to imagine, the tours themselves also vary in size based on how large the boat is. Want a small group? Choose the Makana which can only accommodate up to 12 guests. Looking for a super spacious catamaran with a smooth ride? The NaPali Kai III is perfect for you.

Tours aboard the Amelia K, Makana’s 42’ catamaran, are a bit unique from the rest. These excursions depart from Port Allen (instead of Kikiaola ), have restrooms on board, and its length ranges from 4.5 to 5 hours. This tour tends to be a bit more crowded than the rest, so keep that in mind!

This is one of the very few snorkeling tours that allow those who are pregnant (as long are you are healthy enough to do so)! Be sure to book your tour aboard the NaPali Kai III for this option.

Snorkeling tours Kauai - Napali Cliffs

NaPali Coast Rafting Tour

Take off on an exhilarating ride aboard Kauai Sea Rider’s 25’ rigid hull zodiac . You’ll explore sea caves (weather permitting), tons of wildlife, and the stunning NaPali Coast as the backdrop to it all. This tour leaves from the closest harbor to the NaPali Coast itself , making the trip out to your snorkeling destination quick and easy.

Both the Navy and Coast Guard use these zodiacs due to their agility on the water. This kind of tour is an exciting experience and you’ll sit close to the water as you make your way along the coastline. Keep in mind that you’ll be trading luxury and comfort for adventure as there is no shade or bathrooms on this vessel.

This is a fun and exhilarating experience but isn’t for those under 7 or who are pregnant. This cozy tour of up to 14 people is about five hours in length from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. A deli-style lunch, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages are provided.

Best Kauai Snorkeling Tours from Poipu (South Shore)

Kauai z tours – south shore snorkeling.

This 3-hour snorkeling tour off Kauai’s southern coast departs just a few minutes north of downtown Poipu. Its location, along with low time commitment, make this option great if you have a busy schedule without a ton of time to devote to an all-day snorkeling tour. Maneuverability is the name of the game for this excursion as you jet around in a zodiac to reach the snorkeling spot.

The Sheraton Caverns dive site, also known as Honu Hale, is your final destination and one of the best areas off the southern coast to explore underwater. This area is awesome for spotting eels among the rocks, as well as colorful reef fish, but the true star? Sea turtles (honu)! Several other fun spots are included like the Spouting Horn and serene Kipu Kai Cove.

Four different tours depart every day of the week, winter or summer. This tour is only suitable for proficient swimmers and those aged 5 and older. Light snacks and drinks are included.

Snorkeling tours Kauai - fish

Kauai Z Tours – Shore snorkeling

Kauai Z Tours also offers a shore snorkeling experience , a wonderful option if you’re prone to seasickness or have little ones in tow. Also leaving from Poipu, this tour includes a dedicated 45-60 minutes of unfettered snorkeling in one of two destinations, depending on the conditions, and is great for both experienced snorkelers and novices.

You might be wondering, why would I pay to go on a shore snorkeling tour when I could probably do it for free? We love shore snorkeling excursions because they’re usually less expensive than a full-blown boat tour but still offer a great experience. This is also a good base and introduction to snorkeling if you’re a beginner. If you want to do a longer or more intensive snorkeling session but need a refresher – this is for you!

This tour is only suitable for children 4 years of age and older.

Kauai Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Which side of kauai is the best for snorkeling.

The best snorkeling on Kauai depends almost entirely on the season. The north shore has some of the most beautiful spots for snorkeling on the island – but it is only safe and accessible in summer. Winter brings difficult snorkeling conditions to Kauai’s north shore. The only place to snorkel during this time is on the leeward side of the island, as waves and currents are far too strong elsewhere. Poipu is your best bet if you’re hoping for a winter snorkeling session on Kauai .

Snorkeling tours Kauai - which side of Kauai is the best for snorkeling

Are snorkeling tours on Kauai worth it?

We used to find ourselves squarely on one side of this debate: snorkeling tours were not worth the money. However, as we’ve done more of them (and gone on great tours), we’ve come to really appreciate that a good snorkeling tour is definitely worth the time and money for a number of reasons:

  • You can snorkel in hard-to-access areas: Some tours will take you to spots that are easily accessible from the shore. But others treat you to spots that would be challenging (or impossible) to reach without a boat, like Ni’ihau and Honu Hale.
  • Access to a naturalist: You’re there to snorkel and have fun, but there’s also something to be said about actually learning more about Hawaii, the ocean, and sea life while you’re on your tour. The best boats come with fantastic naturalists who can educate you on what you’re seeing and answer your questions.
  • A crew dedicated to keeping you safe: Snorkeling is a fun activity but there are times when it isn’t so safe. When you head out on a quality boat tour, you have a crew that is dedicated to making sure their passengers stay out of danger. That means providing you with good gear, having people in the water to help anyone in distress, and making sure to take you to safe places.
  • Excellent gear: We own our own snorkeling gear but we almost always leave that at home and use what our tour provides. Why? The quality of the equipment is great, they take away any hassle of cleaning it, and we get to try out new brands.
  • Easy and all-inclusive: Beach days require some planning — bringing the gear, finding a spot, and packing enough food and water. A snorkeling tour requires a lot less planning. They take care of the food and drink for you. Just bring your towel and your favorite reef-friendly sunscreen!
  • Better reef and environmental protection: Protecting the reef and the sea life in Hawaii is very important. When you travel on a guided snorkeling tour, there is little chance that you’ll find yourself stepping on and damaging coral or violating any of the animal protection laws that are in place.

While there are a lot of benefits of snorkeling with a tour, that’s not to say that you should skip snorkeling from the shore. Still, we think that doing one good, quality snorkeling tour on Kauai is worth it for just about everyone.

What can you expect on a Kauai snorkeling tour?

Each snorkeling tour on Kauai is just a little different from the next. Here’s what you can expect from practically all of them.

  • A knowledgeable guide or naturalist. All of Kauai’s snorkeling tours are led by a team who knows Kauai and its snorkeling spots like the back of their hand. Not only will they take you to the very best locations but they’ll also give you tips on how to snorkel, what to look for, wildlife, and safety measures. Some even give a little history or geography lesson along the way and help point out dolphin, seal, and turtle sightings.
  • Snorkeling gear. Every tour comes with the necessary gear you’ll need for snorkeling including masks, snorkels, and fins. There’s no need to pack your equipment or go out and buy it! Wetsuits aren’t typically included but Kauai’s water is warm enough to swim in no matter the season.
  • Drinks and snacks. Most snorkeling tours on Kauai include drinks, like juice, soft drinks, water, and snacks. Longer tours typically include one to two meals. If you’re hoping for a cocktail or two on your snorkeling excursion, some of them include beer and wine after you’re finished swimming for the day.

SNORKELING TOURS

*Snorkeling is weather dependent. Don’t worry, if snorkeling is not in the cards that day, your Captain will know the best tour alternative for an unforgettable adventure.

Kauaʻi offers world-class snorkeling destinations teeming with fish and filled with beautiful coral reefs. Dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, eels, and more have been sighted across the coral reefs of Kauai.

Some of our favorite spots are located on the Nā Pali Coast and the Southwest side of the island. The Na Pali Coast is one of the most iconic locations on Kauai, with cliffs that stretch over 3,500 feet into the sky and across 17 miles of the coast.

Depending on the tour and weather, our Captain will choose the most promising snorkel destination for that day. Come aboard our luxurious catamaran or adventurous raft tours to explore snorkeling locations in clear waters, hidden coves, sea caves, beneath cliffs, and in the most beautiful spots along the coast. Snorkeling in Kauai is always an adventure!

Kauaʻi can be hit or miss when it comes to visibility. Due to the abundance of waterfalls, when we have heavy rains in the mountains, the freshwater has a tendency to make the water murky. Nature will deal from its deck your paradise card: awe-inspiring, fresh rain-fueled waterfalls or pristine snorkeling conditions. In either case, your Captain will either find a location with better visibility or guide you along an equally incredible journey.

Ready to go snorkeling in paradise? Check out our snorkeling adventures below!

Snorkel - Turtle Tour

South shore at koloa landing in poipu(seasonal), tunnels reef at haena, past hanalei (possible spring 2019).

Slip into the beautiful waters of Kauai, Hawaii for an outfitted valet style guided adventure, where you may soar through schools of tropical fish, possibly encounter monk seals, white tip reef sharks, rays, and other various marine life, swim through lava rock arches, or visit green sea turtles  resting on the reef.

We often see dolphins  or can hear the beautiful songs of the humpback whales hanging out during the winter season.

Visit some of our “classic” sites: Koloa Landing, or Tunnels beach.  Sunny skies, or rain, the warm water, and an easy entry shore dive, (valet style) will make this trip a highlight to your Hawaiian vacation.

This shore snorkeling adventure takes place on the tropical reef, in the confines of a beautiful horseshoe shaped bay. One of the highlights of your dive will be encountering the Hawaiian green sea turtle.

All   snorkel equipment is provided including a warm wetsuit,   snorkel fins, dive mask, and a dry top snorkel, (inflatable snorkel jacket if requested). We also bring a soft top board surfboard for resting upon, or to observe from.

Light snack and beverage are also included.

We cater to Small groups, but can impressively accommodate larger, private groups upon request. We provide the best   personal service on each tour.

Upon checking in, we give a snorkel lesson, introducing you to the   most modern snorkeling equipment   and teaching you the best techniques for mastering snorkeling.

We will then go over the hand signals (for communicating in the water),then discuss any possible but unlikely emergency procedures.

During the pre-dive briefing, we will give a marine life orientation to describe the underwater terrain, the delicate reef, and discuss creatures you will see including the native endemic species (fish and marine invertebrates only found in Hawaii).

After suiting up, we enter the water, get comfortable with our equipment, then explore the Reef for approximately 1 hr. With your divemaster leading the way and pointing out all of the  turtles and marine life.

Hawaiian Sea Turtles: Where to Spot Them in Kauai

Hawaiian Sea Turtles: Where to Spot Them in Kauai

In Adventure , Things To Do: Makana Charters Blog by Makana Charters April 9, 2021 Leave a Comment

Told about in many Hawaiian myths and legends , the Hawaiian green sea turtle, or honu , is a gentle-looking creature with a heart-shaped brown shell and large flippers that help it sail through the island’s waters with ease.

This fascinating animal swims up to 35 miles per hour and is unfortunately listed as an endangered species following years of neglect during the early 20th century.

If catching glimpses of this ancient animal is on your Hawaii vacation to-do list , there are specific rules to keep in mind due to their rarity. Along with the policies you need to observe, we’re sharing some of the spots in Kauai where you can find these ancient turtles and appreciate the sight of them from afar.

Safety Laws to Remember

Whether you see a honu on land or in the water, maintaining a safe distance is essential. These animals are protected under the Endangered Species Act as well as by the state of Hawaii.

When you spot honus, stay at least 10 feet away, and never harass, feed, chase, ride, handle, injure, or hunt them. Holding the animals in captivity is also prohibited under federal and state laws. Violators can be fined up to $100,000 and possibly imprisoned. Show the animals your respect by watching them from afar.

Sea turtles made the Hawaiian islands their home long before people did, but their count has dropped dramatically due to overharvesting. Honu were officially placed on the endangered species list in 1978 and are strictly protected. Here are some guidelines to help keep them safe for future generations to love on:

  • Always keep the prescribed distance from a sea turtle. Do not chase, approach, or even attempt to ride a turtle. Fines can set you back $100,000. Not worth it — not to mention cruel.
  • If you would like to move closer to a turtle, float or swim towards it as gently as possible.
  • Never attempt to feed a sea turtle.
  • Loud noises and abrupt movements startle these timid creatures. Appreciate them quietly and be gentle with your movements.
  • Always give a sea turtle a clear path, taking care not to block their access to land or sea.
  • Avoid following a sea turtle out too far or you could end up in dangerous waters.
  • If you encounter a sea turtle that is stranded or injured, report it immediately to a lifeguard or to the Department of Fisheries .

Finding Hawaiian Sea Turtles in Kauai

While it’s possible to see honus sleeping soundly along the coastline, they’re unlikely to venture out to shore when there are crowds. These creatures spend the majority of their lives in water, especially the males, so your chances of spotting one increase when you are also at sea.

Snorkeling, scuba diving, and going on a boat tour are the best ways to see these beautiful animals. When honus are feasting on the algae close to shore, they usually raise their heads out of the water, which makes for an adorable sight when you’re sharing the waters with these gentle animals.

South Shore

Brennecke’s beach.

Right across Poipu Beach Park, you’ll find Brennecke’s Beach which is a popular spot for snorkeling. At dusk, a number of green sea turtles come out of the water in this area. They go back to the water at sunrise, so you’re likely to catch a few on a late afternoon swim.

Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach is also a great area to stay in when you’re trying to spot sea turtles. This area is great for kids because even waders can spot sea turtles hanging in the reef shallows. Snorkellers are also likely to encounter honus while swimming in clear depths.

Kuhio Shores

The bay just east of Kuhio shores is a favorite sea turtle hang out due to the plants that grow among the rocks in this area. Although it’s a little rocky at the entrance to the waters, honus visit this spot all year-round and you’re likely to spot a few on the shores at any time.

Kipu Kai Beach

This beautiful crescent-shaped beach boasts clear waters ideal for seeing and swimming near sea turtles. Despite crystal clear waters, it might be one of the hardest spots to snorkel around in due to its depth. Aside from sea turtles, you can also enjoy being surrounded by a variety of fish underwater.

Koloa Landing

Straight out in front of Koloa Landing Resort is one of the best places to snorkel with sea turtles in Kauai. Swimming here gives you access to an old boat ramp leading to a healthy reef inhabited by lots of fish and turtles. Guests can grab snorkel gear from the resort or get hooked up with a local guide.

Lawai Beach

The turquoise waters off Lawai Beach just next to the Beach House restaurant offer a picturesque spot to hang out with Hawaiian sea turtles. You can jump into the waters right by the road! The beach also usually has shallow waters, making it safe for all types of swimmers.

Mahaulepu Beach

This is a heritage hike in Kauai which leads to a viewpoint of a remote beach. The scenery here is amazing and you’re sure to spot many sea turtles from a distance. This is a sandy hike that will require more preparation than other spots featured on this list, so be sure to ready yourself with the basics of hiking in Kauai .

North Shore

Turtle cove.

True to its name, this hidden gem by Queen’s Bath is a spot that honus love to eat and lounge in. It’s considered the best place to see Kauai’s famed turtles. With fine sand and lots of algae, it truly makes a lovely resting point for turtles who have been out in the water all day.

Where the main highway ends, this gorgeous beach begins. Snorkelers can enjoy a vast stretch of ocean in this area, perfect for seeking sea turtles. Ke’e is known as one of the most visited beaches in Kauai , so get there early if you want to get your group a good spot.

Tunnels Beach

We can’t leave behind one of the best snorkeling spots in the Hawaiian Islands! Tunnels Beach is a prime spot to make friends with countless fish and the occasional wandering honus. If you’re lucky, you can also spot Hawaiian monk seals which frequently visit the area.

Meet Hawaii’s Cute Sea Turtles

Although there are many spots to check out if you’re planning to get a glimpse of Hawaiian sea turtles, seeing them in real life is still a pretty special experience due to their adorable nature and rarity. As such, we hope you get to encounter honus on your trip to Kauai. They’re quite the island’s darlings.

Visiting Hawaii offers you a chance to explore some of the best snorkeling spots in Kauai. Before you get into the water, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind.

Here are key precautions to ensure your underwater adventures are both fun and safe.

  • Check the weather and ocean conditions before heading out. Strong currents and high waves can make snorkeling dangerous, especially during winter months at places like Ke’e Beach.
  • Always  snorkel with a buddy . It’s safer and more fun when you have someone to share the experience with. Plus, you can look out for each other.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen  to protect yourself from sunburn without harming marine life. The chemicals in regular sunscreens can damage coral reefs and the creatures that call them home.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks  when you need them. Snorkeling can be tiring, so make sure to drink plenty of water and rest on the beach or in the shade.
  • Respect marine life  by not touching or feeding fish and other sea animals. Some species are endangered, like Hawaiian green sea turtles and monk seals, so it’s important to admire them from a distance.
  • Wear a life jacket  if you’re not a strong swimmer or if swimming conditions are tough. It’s an easy way to stay safe while enjoying your snorkeling adventure.
  • Be mindful of where you step or kick  while snorkeling over shallow reefs, such as at Anini Beach, to avoid damaging coral or injuring yourself on sharp rocks.
  • Pay attention to signs at beaches  that may warn of hazards or restricted areas meant for your safety as well as for environmental protection efforts.
  • Ensure your equipment fits well before getting into the water; poorly fitting gear can leak or become uncomfortable, distracting you from safely enjoying your snorkel experience.
  • Educate yourself on local regulations and etiquette—this includes understanding designated snorkeling areas, respecting no-touch rules for coral reefs, and knowing what to do if you encounter wildlife like sea turtles or seals.

Following these simple steps lets everyone enjoy the best snorkeling on Kauai while keeping both snorkelers and marine ecosystems safe and healthy.

Navigating the World of Poipu Beach Turtles in Kauai

One of Poipu beach turtles gliding near the corals

for my friend, Jane Etherington

You dip your face mask under the water and see your daughter, some 15 feet away, waving you over like mad, stirring up bubbles all around her. Even behind her mask and snorkel you can tell she is grinning ear to ear. You glide through the turquoise water spiked with golden shafts of sunlight until you’re beside her. She points, and there, just beyond the rocks, floats a pair of peaceful, gentle, beautiful Poipu beach turtles. You can feel your goosebumps even underwater.

The sea turtle seems unfazed by your presence. She is hovering there, mostly still. Her flippers have a leopard-like pattern and her green back looks as mottled as the mossy rocks beneath her. She turns her head slightly toward you, and the line of her beak almost looks like a smile, too. Then just like that, she pushes off the rocks and swims toward the depths, her flippers waving like wings. You and your daughter swim up for air, and burst through the surface cackling with delight.

“That was so awesome!” your daughter enthuses, adjusting her goggles. “Did you see that?!” She blows water out her snorkel. “Come on!” And she’s back underwater to keep tabs on her new friend.

Somehow you know just how she will respond to friends back home who ask her “What was the highlight of your trip to Kauai ?” Somehow you know that she will remember this moment forever.

And you will, too.

Just What is It About Poipu Beach Turtles?

Sea turtles, or “honu” (hoh-noo) to the locals, top most travelers’ wish lists of wildlife to see in Kauai. Long considered symbols of good luck, the creatures’ kind faces and trudging gait are endearing, and watching them swim is a joy. But it is also their will that amazes us. A newly hatched sea turtle’s chance of eluding predators as it scrambles from its sandy nest to the relative safety of the water is one of the most harrowing starts to life in the animal kingdom. Even if they make it to the sea, hatchlings are a favorite snack of bigger creatures, and only one in 1,000 eggs will survive to adulthood. If a sea turtle does beat the odds, however, they can live up to 80-plus years! In Kauai, honu can often be seen swimming in the surf, hanging around the rocky shores and even napping on the beaches.

So where is the best place to see sea turtles in Kauai?

There are plenty! The South Shore and the North Shore are filled with ideal locations to view these majestic creatures. The northwestern-most Hawaiian island is a turtle nesting destination so they arrive to lay their eggs here from May through September, but they can be seen in water and on land pretty much year round — if you know where to see turtles in Kauai. Here is a sampling:

Kauai’s South Shore:

Brennecke’s Beach — Just across from Nihi Kai Villas honu can often be seen from the shore as they feed on greens along the lava shelf.

Poipu Beach Park — Great for kids because even waders can spot sea turtles hanging in the reef shallows while snorkelers can see them swimming in the clearer depths. Poipu beach turtles are truly a sight to behold in this vibrant marine haven.

Kuhio Shores — Though a little rocky at the entrance to the water, the bay just east of Kuhio Shores is a favorite sea turtle hangout. Honu visits this spot year-round to snack on the plants growing among the rocks.

Kipu Kai Beach — This beautiful crescent-shaped beach boasts clear waters ideal for seeing and swimming near sea turtles. Scenes from the movie The Descendants were filmed here.

Koloa Landing — Straight out in front of  Koloa Landing Resort is one of the best places to snorkel with sea turtles in Kauai. Guests can even grab snorkel gear from the resort or get hooked up with a local guide.

Lawai — Swim with Kauai sea turtles in the turquoise waters off Lawai Beach just next to the Beach House restaurant.

Mahaulepu — This remote, more sparsely populated beach at the end of the Heritage hike offers twinkling blue waters ideal for snorkeling with sea turtles. Paradise. . .

Spouting Horn — Kauai turtles are often seen congregating just below the lookout to the right of the horn in a little cove filled with rocks and delicious seagrasses.

Kauai’s North Shore:

Anini — Hawaiian Green Sea turtles often swim close to shore, sometimes popping up their heads to check out the scene right there in the shallows. The water is protected by the reef making it swimmable even in winter.

Turtle Cove – A bit of a hike gets you to this hidden gem near Queen’s Bath. Honu love to eat and lounge in the sand here. Given its name Turtle Cove, this was once considered the best place to see turtles in Kauai.

Ke’e Beach — Where the main highway ends, this gorgeous beach begins. Snorkelers enjoy a vast stretch of ocean perfect for seeking sea turtles.

Tunnels — One of the best snorkeling spots in the Hawaiian Islands, this is a prime spot to make friends with countless fish and the occasional sea turtle.

________________

Sea turtles made the Hawaiian islands their home long before people did, but in modern times their count has dropped dramatically. Honu were officially placed on the endangered species list in 1978 and are voraciously protected. Here are some guidelines to help keep them safe for future generations to love on:

  • Always stay at least 10 to 15 feet away from a sea turtle. Do not chase, approach, touch, dance with, high five or ride a turtle. Fines can set you back $100,000. Not worth it — not to mention cruel.
  • If you would like to move closer to a turtle, float or swim as gently as possible.
  • Never attempt to feed a sea turtle — unless of course, you are a rock covered in delicious algae.
  • Avoid loud noises and abrupt movements that will startle these timid guys.
  • Do not pour water over a beached turtle or try to push it back into the ocean. (You’d be surprised what people attempt!)
  • Always give sea turtles a clear path, taking care not to block their access to land or sea.
  • Avoid following a sea turtle out too far or you could find yourself in dangerous waters.
  • If you encounter a sea turtle that is stranded, injured or in distress, report it immediately to a lifeguard or to the Department of Fisheries .
  • Use a sunscreen that is friendly to marine life and reefs. Today, Hawaii now sells only environmentally sound sunscreen.
