George Strait is known as ‘The King Of Country‘ for a reason.

Not only can the Texas icon boast sixty No. 1 singles in his armoury, but Strait also knows how to put on a spectacular, unforgettable live show. The charming troubadour infuses his sets with a captivating combination of sing-a-long anthems and affectingly personal moments, such as when he delivers his tear-jerking send-off to the crowd, ‘I'll Always Remember You’ and the introspective ‘I Saw God Today’.

Of course, Strait leaves plenty of room for his most recognisable anthems , from the swaggering, tongue-in-cheek ‘All My Ex's Live in Texas’ and ‘Ocean Front Property’, to irresistible ballads such as ‘Nobody in His Right Mind Would've Left Her’ and ‘I Can Still Make Cheyenne’.

Despite possessing one of the most coveted back catalogues in country music history, George Strait is not afraid to try his hand at a few crowd-pleasing covers during his live shows. In 2023, The King has been performing tracks such as Willie and Merle's ‘Pancho & Lefty’, Johnny's ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and Waylon's ‘Waymore's Blues’.

Other fan-favourite offerings that have been making their way into George Strait's 2023 setlist include ‘The Chair’, ‘Check Yes Or No’, ‘Give It Away’ and the unabashedly jaunty yet heartbroken hit that launched his career back in 1981, ‘Unwound’.

In addition, the country titan continues to serenade fans with an array of newer material, such as ‘Codigo’ (named after Strait's brand of Tequila), ‘The Weight of the Badge’ and ‘Every Little Honky Tonk Bar’.

With a series of blockbuster stadium shows lined up throughout 2023, featuring appearances from Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town, fans will have ample opportunity to see The King remind everyone why he still sits on the country music throne.

The tour will span a number of weekends throughout the summer, beginning May 6 in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium. On June 3, the acts will head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a show at American Family Field. On June 17, the show goes down in Seattle, Washington at Lute Field. A week later, on June 24, the groups will descend upon Denver, Colorado for a performance at Mile High Stadium. On July 29, Strait, Stapleton, and Little Big Town will head to the country music capital of the world with a show in Nashville, Tennessee at Nissan Stadium. On August 5, the tour will wrap up in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium.

Back in March, George Strait performance at RodeoHouston , which saw him come within a few hundred of breaking his own attendance record for the event.

Playing a massive 29-song, two-hours-plus set at the NRG Stadium gathering also known as Houston Rodeo & Livestock Show 2022, he drew a crowd reported at 79,452. This was only some 650 less than the record he set there in 2019 of 80,108 fans. Just as remarkably, the 2022 concert was his 31st appearance at the show, which is another record.

Pete Vonder Haar, reviewing the show in Houston Press , wrote that Strait was “clad as unassumingly as ever: jeans, button down shirt, boots, and black cowboy hat, representing that bygone era before interchangeable ball cap country took over radio.”

Strait began his set with “Heartland,” from the Pure Country soundtrack, and included such career-shaping hits as “Ocean Front Property,” “Amarillo By Morning,” and “The Chair.” There were versions of fellow Texans Bruce Robison’s “Wrapped” and Waylon Jennings’ “Waymore Blues.”

A four-song encore included a cover of Tom Petty ’s “You Wreck Me” as well as crowd-pleasers in the Lone Star State in “All My Ex’s Live In Texas” and “Take Me To Texas,” before an equally appropriate closer in “The Cowboy Rides Away.”

Trending on billboard.

In 2012, Strait announced that he wasn’t “retiring,” but that “the old road-warrior days are just going to be over” after more than 30 years of touring . In 2016, he began an affiliation with Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, which saw him playing several times a year at the venue (the Las Vegas dates will be on hiatus for 2023 except for Dec. 2-3). He has sprinkled his calendar with a handful of arena, festival and stadium dates each year, but next year marks his biggest stadium commitment in nearly a decade.

Each year, Strait and Messina Group CEO Louis Messina, who has been promoting Strait’s concerts for around 30 years, and Messina Group senior vp Bridget Bauer talk about what’s next, Messina says. “There’s something about him and Chris together that’s magical. They love playing with each other,” Messina continues. “I said, ‘We should do something a little different than we’ve been doing.’ We’ve been doing one or two stadiums every year, but we said, ‘This is  all  we should do.’ Having him and Chris together and Little Big Town up there, it’s a pretty, pretty amazing show.”

George Strait and Chris Stapleton

Stadium tickets will be available through an American Express pre-sale Oct. 26 and start at $59. The general public on-sale begins Nov. 4.

The ability to still sell out stadiums five decades into his career fills Strait, 70, with gratitude. “It’s amazing,” he says. “I’ve got the best fans in the world and I’m glad they still come out to hear us play. My whole career has been amazing as far as that goes. I’ve been blessed to be with a great record company, MCA, and although they don’t play me much anymore, country radio was really good to me for a lot of years and I really appreciate those years.”

And Strait has been great for country radio. With iconic songs like “Amarillo by Morning,” “The Chair,” “The Fireman” and “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” his 61 top 10s on Billboard ’s Country Airplay chart are the most of any artist, as are his 100 total entries on the chart. On Hot Country Songs , his 44 No. 1s also set a record, as do his 86 top 10s.

With so many smashes, Strait’s shows are usually wall-to-wall hits, and while he tries to change the set list up, “there are certain songs that I feel we have to do – I don’t want anything thrown at me!” he jokes. “I’m kidding, of course, but I just know when I go to see a certain artist it’s usually because of certain songs. If I don’t hear them, I’m disappointed.”

While many artists find it hard to build a connection with their fans in a huge stadium, Strait says he’s just the opposite, and incredibly, still gets butterflies before he hits the stage. “For me it’s very personal. I can feel every person out there. It’s a huge vibe. Huge,” he says. “I’m always very nervous days or even weeks before. The day of, I’m not very good to be around, I don’t think. It all goes away though as soon as I walk onstage.”

George Strait and Little Big Town

Strait has known Stapleton and Little Big Town for years. The lineup played a stadium show in Minneapolis in November 2021 (in a concert rescheduled from the pandemic) and in Kansas City this past July, but Strait says the dates were less of a test run for the 2023 stadium shows than they were simply playing with his friends: “They’re both super talented artists. I love working with both.”

During the Kansas City date, Stapleton’s wife, Morgane, asked the pair when they were going to do a duet together. “They go, ‘We’re going to figure something out,’” Messina says, though he adds, “George and Chris aren’t the most talkative people in the world when it comes to giving an answer. Though at least when you have Morgane pushing the envelope a little bit, that sure makes it easier instead of me asking. I know they love working with each other.”

Strait’s last release was 2019’s  Honky Tonk Time Machine,  which was his 27th album to debut at No. 1 on Billboard ’s Top Country Albums chart, the most of any artist. While he says he can’t promise that he’ll have new music by the time the first stadium date rolls around in May, “we could possibly have something new by then. It’s been a while for me and I’m definitely getting the itch.”

Though the first date isn’t until May, Strait is getting the itch to get back onstage as well, as he quotes his own lyrics from a 2011 song to describe his long love affair with his audience. “By the time showtime arrives every night, I’m usually tired of waiting and champing at the bit to go,” he says. “’When I walk through those curtains and see those smiling faces, my feet don’t touch the ground again till I walk back out and get on that bus that got me here’ — that’s from a song I wrote called ‘I’ll Always Remember You.’ It’s a true statement.”

Strait doesn’t rule out a similar run in 2024. “Whether or not we do it again the following year depends on how we all feel it went when we’re finished with these shows,” he says. “Chris and I haven’t talked about 2024 at this point.” Messina adds that a tour with shows 20 weekends in a row isn’t going to repeat, but a short outing could happen again. “It depends upon how he likes it or doesn’t like it,” he says. “The good thing about George Strait is we can do anything that he wants to do.”

George Strait Announces Six Stadium Concerts for 2023

George Strait concerts are going to be bigger than ever in 2023. The country music legend has just announced six stadium shows, set for May through Aug. 2023.

Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town will open for him during all six shows.

While Strait has been playing one-off stadium shows — including for 51,000 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in November 2021 — this marks his first dedicated run of stadium shows. Right now, the six shows listed below are his only six shows listed for 2023.

Both Little Big Town and Stapleton opened the Minneapolis show, and in a press release, the Strait and Stapleton shared admiration for one another. When the 70-year-old announced his plans to retire from the road in 2012, he left open the possibility for something like this. At the time he made it clear that the touring life was not for him any longer, but he still very much liked performing.

The first stop is scheduled for May 6 in Glendale, Ariz. Strait will then play three shows in June, one in late July and another in early August. Tickets for all shows go on sale on Nov. 4 at 10AM local time.

GEORGE STRAIT AND CHRIS STAPLETON EXTEND RUN OF STADIUM SHOWS, NEW DATES ADDED FOR 2024

george strait tour songs 2023

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Setting venue attendance records across seven stadium shows this summer, country music icon George Strait and eight-time GRAMMY winner Chris Stapleton continue the excitement into 2024 with nine new dates. Also returning alongside the King of Country and Stapleton for the extended run of one-off stadium dates are special guests and GRAMMY Award-winning band Little Big Town . In addition to summer shows in Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Ames, Charlotte, East Rutherford, Salt Lake City, Detroit and Chicago, Strait will also supersize his longstanding Strait to Vegas show with a December date at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium to mark the 37th installment of the engagement. Tickets to most shows go on sale next Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. local time via GeorgeStrait.com , with tickets to the Jacksonville show on sale Friday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. local time. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. local time. Of the few opportunities to see Strait perform live, Pollstar opines, “Strait remains the most worthy inheritor of Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson’s mantle of country icon through the meaningful fluidity with which he moves through country’s various sub-strains with the same ease and enjoyment that marked both men’s Country Music Hall of Fame careers.” “I’ve always said we have the best fans in the world, and to see so many of them show up for these shows just makes us want to keep bringing them more,” shares Strait. “I’ve also missed performing in Las Vegas during NFR, so I’m happy to see that show come together in 2024. See you soon!” George Strait w/ Chris Stapleton & special guests Little Big Town 2024 Stadium Shows:

About George Strait George Strait is the unambiguous King of Country Music, having sold more than 105 million albums and counting while earning more than 60 major entertainment industry awards as well as countless nominations and becoming the only act in history to have a Top 10 hit every year for over three decades. With 33 different Platinum or multi-Platinum albums, he’s earned the third-most certifications of any artist in any genre, following only The Beatles and Elvis Presley, and with a total of 60, Strait has more No. 1 songs than any other artist in history (including Elvis). The Texas troubadour released 2019’s best-selling Country album, Honky Tonk Time Machine , on MCA Nashville, produced by Strait and Chuck Ainlay, the album quickly became Strait’s record-extending 27th No. 1 Billboard Country album. Comprised of 12 original titles plus Strait’s version of the Johnny Paycheck classic “Old Violin,” Honky Tonk Time Machine marks an incredible 30th career studio album from the Country Music Hall of Fame member, who earned his 100th entry on the Billboard Country Airplay chart with his single “The Weight of the Badge” from the project. Since his record-breaking Cowboy Rides Away Tour in 2014, Strait has performed for limited engagements, most notably at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena for his long running “Strait to Vegas” series. In 2022, he also made his 31st appearance at the iconic Houston Rodeo on the event’s final night and headlined two nights at Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena. 2023 has seen Strait set concert attendance records at multiple venues as he has teamed up with Chris Stapleton for a series of one-off stadium shows in just six markets, with Little Big Town also appearing on each date. About Chris Stapleton Kentucky-born Chris Stapleton is an eight-time GRAMMY, 14-time CMA and 10-time ACM Award winner and one of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians who will release his highly anticipated new album, Higher , on November 10 (Mercury Nashville). Produced by Dave Cobb, Morgane Stapleton and Chris Stapleton and recorded at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A, the record consists of 14 tracks that showcase Stapleton’s supernatural voice and musical versatility with songs that defy easy categorization. Already receiving overwhelming notice, the album's lead single, “White Horse,” recently achieved the biggest add day of the last 12 months at country radio and marks the highest chart debut of Stapleton's career. Released to critical acclaim, Billboard praises, “‘White Horse’ finds Stapleton pairing an outlaw swagger with some heaven-scraping vocals, going for the gusto throughout the chorus to try and match the guitar snarl.”

The new music adds to another landmark year for Stapleton, who is nominated for three awards at this year’s 57th Annual CMA Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year. He was also named Entertainer of the Year at the 58th ACM Awards—resulting in a prestigious ACM Triple Crown Award—and Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards, his sixth time earning the award, setting the record for most wins ever in the category. Additionally, in February, he performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVII and has collaborated in recent years with Adele, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Sheryl Crow, Santana and many more. About Little Big Town GRAMMY, ACM, CMA, AMA and Emmy Award-winning group, Little Big Town – consisting of members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, Kimberly Schlapman, and Jimi Westbrook – first entered the music scene over 20 years ago with hit songs “Boondocks,” “Bring It On Home,” “Good As Gone” and the GRAMMY-nominated “Little White Church.” The band’s breakthrough albums Tornado and Pain Killer produced multiple No. 1 singles, including “Pontoon,” “Tornado,” and “Day Drinking,” as well as the history-making, best-selling country single of the year (2015) “Girl Crush.” 2017’s The Breaker debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Charts to critical acclaim. The album features their GRAMMY-winning, multi-week No. 1 single, “Better Man,” as well as the 2019 GRAMMY-nominated, “When Someone Stops Loving You.” The band’s self-produced ninth studio album, Nightfall , was released January 2020 and hit the top of the Billboard Country Charts. The record included critically acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated “The Daughters,” “Over Drinking” and “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” – the latter of which has reached almost 400 million global streams. In September 2022 they released their tenth studio album, Mr. Sun, which debuted as the Top Country Album released by a Group in 2022. “When I walk through those curtains and see those smiling faces, my feet don’t touch the ground again ‘til I walk back out and get on that bus that got me there. That’s from a song I wrote called ‘I’ll Always Remember You.’ It’s a true statement,” Strait told Billboard . “When we talked about doing these six shows next year with Chris, it was a no brainer for me. I was all in.”

Strait publicly retired from large-scale touring in 2014, and has since made sparing appearances at festivals and one-off shows. He currently has a residency at  T-Mobile Arena  in Las Vegas, set to run through December with special guest  Caitlyn Smith .

George Strait’s New Album, Cowboys And Dreamers: Review, Tracklist

Listen to and read about george strait's new album, cowboys and dreamers : tracklist, songwriters, and a track-by-track review.

Ya know, every George Strait album is the “album of the year” for a real fan. His records never fail ‘em – there’s usually always a mix of the honky-tonk revelry, good times between friends, the heartrending life lessons, and unconditional love that sustains. Sonically they’re always a cornucopia of trad-country-arrangement beauty, from Western swing to easy-breezy balladry to straight-ahead barroom romper. He does it all with style; that voice of his never seems to go out of it.

Now, it’s hard for me to be unbiased here, because I am a diehard Strait fan, but I think Cowboys and Dreamers (out September 6) would be a worthy contender for the #AOTY prize … the ultimate Grammy that all the pop fans fight over on behalf of their perspective idols.

In a year when country was in high fashion and the crossovers were plenty, I say why not urge the Grammy voters to recognize one of the guys who’s been doing the coolest thing all along? (Admittedly, the eligibility period for 2025's Grammys might be up already .) Cowboys and Dreamers might be just the record for that distinction, too. It’s a beaut.

I definitely won’t “spoil” too much for y’all before the LP comes out, but I will tell you a few things after hearing it through headphones, driving around with it in the truck, and tipping a couple back to it at the end of the day. Read on, and listen to three of the songs George has already shared. Are you a cowboy, a dreamer, or both?

Cowboys And Dreamers Track List

1. three drinks behind.

(Songwriters: Benjamin Gaither, Jeff Silvey and Kim Williams)

The scene is a bar where George fellowships his cares away. It has such a melody that you find yourself singing along by the second chorus.

Sister songs: Think the rhythm of “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright” and the collegial lyrical spirit of “Cold Beer Conversation.”

Listen for this: It’s got some supremely beautiful guitar refrains and high-toned instrumentation throughout. It’s a vibe. Set em up, Joe!

2. Cowboys And Dreamers

(Jessie Jo Dillon, Keith Gattis and Bubba Strait)

This one is the title track because, in a way, it’s the thesis of both the record and of George’s career. He worries less about fitting into any given moment than satisfying and building on his own creative lanes. He keeps his eyes on the road ahead. He lives and dies for the rush.

Sister songs: “Amarillo By Morning,” “I Can Still Make Cheyenne”

Listen for this: It becomes more and more anthemic by the second with its steady beat— it’s an instant Strait classic.

3. To The Moon

(Marty Brown and Steve Clark)

This one is giving me Don Williams simplicity — all the things that a man clings to in life pale in comparison to his one true love.

Sister songs: “Carrying Your Love With Me,” “I Cross My Heart”

Listen for this: The bluegrass elements at the end sweeten the whole affair.

4. MIA Down in MIA

(Adam Craig and Dean Dillon)

Strait can pull off these Buffett-style ditties every time, without a miss. Can’t you just see George under the palms, Código in hand?

Sister songs: “Código,” “Stars on the Water”

Listen for this: Man, Strait paints quite the relaxing scene in the last verse. Wait till you hear it.

5. Wish I Could Say

(Keith Gattis)

The late, great songwriter Gattis penned this Kristofferson-worthy ballad. And damn if George doesn’t slay that vocal…

Sister songs: “Drinking Champagne,” “Today My World Slipped Away”

Listen for this: Go for the storytelling, stay for the soulful organ solo and the way the fiddle weaves in and out with George’s perfect vocal tone.

6. Calling From The Car

(Bobby Braddock)

Genius! Lyrics about cellphones set to the the twangiest, traditional country style imaginable. The wordplay in this one is [chef’s kiss].

Sister songs: “All My Exes Live In Texas,” “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind”

Listen for this: That cascading pedal steel and the twinkly piano. Anybody want a drink?

7. People Get Hurt Sometimes

(Jim Lauderdale, Kendell Marvel and Jimmy Ritchey)

The word that comes to mind is “swoon.” A song for a bittersweet slow dance.

Sister songs: “What’s Going On In Your World,” “She’ll  Leave You With a Smile”

Listen for this: Strait always had an affinity for the Billy Sherrill strings and the countrypolitan elements, but just enough not to be cloying, right? This finds that perfect balance in the instruments.

8. Honky Tonk Hall Of Fame with Chris Stapleton

(Chris Stapleton, Jameson Clark and Timothy James)

These two men could have made us cry, made us go deep into thought. But they just want us to have fun. They out honky-tonk each other with aplomb. Musta been all those stadium dates.

Sister songs: “Hey Good Lookin’,” “Big Ball’s In Cowtown”

Listen for this: Notice how well they coordinate their vocal runs in the more challenging patches. Watch out, Mariah and Ariana!

9. The Little Things

(George Strait, Monty Criswell and Bubba Strait)

Seems like the perfect song for a father and son to help co-write — an ode to reconnecting with what matters.

Sister songs: “I Saw God Today,” “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright”

Listen for this: Just listen, and grab a tissue, maybe. I mean, he sings so earnestly about Merle and Momma in the chorus. I’ll let the other “little things” surprise you.

10. The Book

(George Strait, Dean Dillon, Jessie Jo Dillon and Bubba Strait)

Another meaningful tune benefiting from close-knit, family songwriting. One for the believers.

Sister songs: “Blue Clear Sky,” “Love Without End, Amen”

Listen for this: It might be the purest country arrangement on the record, and that’s saying a lot considering it’s George Strait. This one rolls along so beautifully – you’ll see. It’s cowboy gospel.

(Guy Clark and Keith Gattis)

If George’s spoken intro doesn’t choke you up, the song itself will. A character so real is written and sung stunningly within those verses.

Sister songs: “Give It Away,” “River of Love”

Listen for this: The backing vocals send this one soaring to new heights. Gorgeous and profound.

12. Waymore’s Blues

(Curtis Buck and Waylon Jennings)

It’s a cover and a goodun.

Sister songs: “Ace In The Hole,” “Heartland”

Listen for this: George finds the Waylon grit without copying, and the extended jams are perfect for the next to last track on a record.

13. The Journey Of Your Life

(Ronnie Bowman and Troy Jones)

It all comes back to those who came before us and lived to tell the tales, to teach the lessons. Another modern Strait motivator for the hard times.

Sister songs: “Troubadour,” “I Believe”

Listen for this: The ethereal vibes of this one, enhanced by rich strings, help to end the album in a reflective spot.

George Strait – Three Drinks Behind (AUDIO): “Here’s a song called Three Drinks Behind. It was written by Benjamin Gaither, Jeff Silvey, and Kim Williams. This song was sent to me years ago. Had to be 10 years ago, maybe more. Totally different demo, totally different vibe. The song is great. I loved it then. In fact, I still have it on a CD somewhere. And it was a good song then. It’s an even better song now. It’s a totally new arrangement, but I think you’ll like it. Three Drinks Behind.”

Audio / George Strait - "Cowboys and Dreamers" (AUDIO)

George Strait – Cowboys and Dreamers (AUDIO): “Here’s a song written by Jesse Joe Dillon, Keith Gaddis, and my son Bubba Strait. It’s called Cowboys and Dreamers, and it’s a really cool song. So cool that I thought that I should name the whole album after it. And you know, sometimes I feel like the last of a dying breed trying to find where I fit. That pretty much says it all. Cowboys and Dreamers.”

Audio / George Strait - "To The Moon" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “To The Moon” (AUDIO): “This next song was written by Marty Brown and Steve Clark. One of my producers, Tony Brown, sent it to me. And man, I just loved it. After that, we were getting songs and kind of measuring them up to how they would stack up against this song. But it’s a love song and it’s called To The Moon.”

Audio / George Strait - "Wish I Could Say" (AUDIO)

George Strait “Wish I Could Say” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song that was written by my old friend, Mr. Keith Gaddis, who he lost last year, unfortunately. We miss him a lot. It’s a good old country song, just like he always wrote. That man was amazing. And anyway, this is my band on it also, the O Ways and the Whole band. And it’s a great country song, like I said, it’s called Wish I Could Say.”

Audio / George Strait - "Calling From The Car" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “Calling From The Car” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song written by the great Bobby Braddock. It’s called, Calling From the Car. And it’s a good old country cheating song for sure. But man, is it clever and I love it.”

Audio / George Strait - "People Get Hurt Sometimes" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “People Get Hurt Sometimes” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song written by one of my favorite songwriters, Jim Lauderdale, along with Kendall Marble and Jimmy Ritchie. It’s a beautiful song. We put some strings on it and it just really made it pretty. It’s called People Get Hurt Sometimes.”

Audio / George Strait - "Honky Tonk Hall of Fame" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song that my friend Chris Stapleton wrote, along with Jameson Clark and Timothy James. It’s a good old honky tonker, I mean a good one. And Chris was kind enough to sing it with me on the record. And so it was fun, we had a great time doing it. And it’s called Honky Tonk Hall of Fame.”

Audio / George Strait - "The Little Things" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “The Little Things” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song that I wrote with Monte Criswell and my son Bubba Strait. It’s a beautiful song, I just love it. It’s called The Little Things, and that’s kind of what it’s about, is don’t miss the little things.”

Audio / George Strait - "Waymore's Blues" (AUDIO)

George Strait: “Waymore’s Blues” (AUDIO): “Here’s a song that was written by one of my heroes, one of our heroes, Mr. Waylon Jennings, and also Curtis Buck. We’ve been doing this song, me and the band, for quite a few years on stage live, and we’ve been doing it a little bit different though than Waylon did it, and I just love it this way because it features my band a lot, and those boys are pretty good. So I hope you like it and next time you come see us we’re going to play it for you. Waymore’s Blues.”

Audio / George Strait - "The Journey Of Your Life" (AUDIO)

George Strait – “The Journey Of Your Life” (AUDIO): “ Here’s a song called The Journey of Your Life written by Ronnie Bowman and Troy Jones. Music Review: On 'Cowboys and Dreamers,' George Strait's traditional country is still a heart warmer

George Strait's 31st studio album, the feel-good ''Cowboys and Dreamers,'' marks five decades of record releases; a titanic career for a Texas troubadour whose greatest ambition seems to have always been the same: Make pretty, plain-spoken songs about life's true pains and pleasures, and listeners will find their own resonance within them.

By MARIA SHERMAN

Across 13 songs in 47 minutes — his first collection since 2019's ''Honky Tonk Time Machine'' — Strait plays to his traditionalist country style without ever sounding derivative of his former records. That's the beauty of his particular songwriting: The songs on ''Cowboys and Dreamers'' could exist at any point in time across his career, not in a lazy atavistic fashion, but utilizing nostalgia as an effective art medium.

There are standouts for every mood across ''Cowboys and Dreamers,'' best heard through an old truck's speakers while driving down an empty back road: The joyful single ''Honky Tonk Hall of Fame,'' featuring Chris Stapleton, a cover of Waylon Jennings' ''Waymore's Blues,'' and the Jimmy Buffet-informed vacation stomper, ''MIA Down in MIA.''

Privacy is required for the tear-jerking ballads with pedal steel that sounds like crying: Like on ''The Little Things,'' ''People Get Hurt Sometimes,'' ''The Journey Of Your Life'' or, most severely, ''Rent,'' written by Guy Clark and Keith Gattis, that begins with Strait offering a spoken-word tribute to the late Gattis.

''The war took my brother/The good Lord took my mother/And the years, well, I don't know where they all went,'' he later sings in its striking chorus. "Until that roll is called up yonder/All I can do is wonder/If I even did enough to make a dent/But I made a few good friends/And I always paid my rent.''

Over the last two years, Strait has been on tour with Stapleton and Little Big Town. He's filled stadiums in states maybe not stereotypically associated with country music, but deep appreciators of the stuff, nonetheless. In June, at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium not far from New York City, Strait turned a space of tens of thousands across many demographics into something resembling the intimacy of those honky tonks he's always singing about. Strait performed with a big band and a lot of heart, in a Western shirt and stiff, straight-starched jeans. (The closest a person can get to levitation is singing along to ''Amarillo by Morning'' in a stadium of tens of thousands, anyway.) There, as on ''Cowboys and Dreamers,'' Strait's powers were in full force: Familiar sounds in a modern context. If you love Strait, you love him — and that makes it classic.

George Strait and Chris Stapleton Revive the Twang in ‘Honky Tonk Hall of Fame’ Duet

George Strait and Chris Stapleton have been playing stadiums together for the past few summers. They finally come together in the studio on “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame,” a boisterous trad-country duet on Strait’s new album Cowboys and Dreamers , out now.

The pairing is a match made in honky-tonk heaven, with Strait’s smooth country voice complementing Stapleton’s gruff rasp. A true duet, the men alternate lyrics in the verses and sing together in the chorus: “I’ll say it once again/I’m the best that’s ever been at drinkin’ doubles up on this stool,” they boast. In the chorus payoff line, they predict that their names will be enshrined behind all those glistening bottles — “everybody’s gonna know my name, when they hang my star behind the bar/at the honky tonk hall of fame.”

Both Strait and Stapleton know their way around a liquor cabinet. Each has their own signature spirit: Strait is the face of the tequila brand Código , while Stapleton launched his Traveller whiskey in January.

“Honky Tonky Hall of Fame” was written by Stapleton with Jameson Clark and Timothy. James. Strait and his song Bubba Strait contributed to Cowboys and Dreamers too, in songs like “The Little Things” and “The Book.” The album also contains a few credits from Keith Gattis, the revered Texas songwriter who died in 2023. Here, Strait offers his version of “Wish I Could Say,” which Gattis wrote for King George.

Strait and Stapleton’s next concert together is Dec. 7 in Las Vegas, where they’ll team up at Allegiant Stadium during National Finals Rodeo week.

(The closest a person can get to levitation is singing along to “Amarillo by Morning” in a stadium of tens of thousands, anyway.) There, as on “Cowboys and Dreamers,” Strait's powers were in full force: Familiar sounds in a modern context. If you love Strait, you love him — and that makes it classic.
