The Fashion World Guide to Art Basel Miami Beach

Ten things everyone will be talking about.

Art Basel Miami Beach is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and the celebrations surrounding the flagship fair of Miami Art Week are looking to be bigger than ever. While ABMB doesn’t officially open to the public at the Miami Beach Beach Convention Center until Thursday, the annual post-Thanksgiving seaside art (and fashion and design) bacchanal kicks off today with a plethora of pop-up galleries, museum shows, satellite fairs, store openings, and shopping events around Miami Beach and in the Miami Design District on the mainland. From public art you can sit on to sofas you can wear, there’s so much to see and discover. Why don’t you choose your own adventure?

2. Shop for “Clothes” for Your Home

The Miami Design District is the Magic City’s high fashion mecca, and thanks to a trio of openings from Italian houses this week, it’s also a great place to shop for alta moda furniture. Opening Monday, the Dolce&Gabbana Casa pop-up will showcase examples of fashion brand’s fine Italian craftsmanship such as Murano glassware, hand-painted ceramics, jacquard sofas, and armchairs upholstered in petit point embroidery.

On Wednesday, Fendi will open its first Fendi Casa US flagship, a sunlit space where the sleek Arabescato Vagli marble and concrete surfaces complement pieces from established and emerging designers, like Marcel Wanders’s aluminum O’Lock mirror and Dimorestudio’s steel and crystal Matrice bookcase. Also on Wednesday, Bottega Veneta will unveil Come Stai? , a new site-specific installation of the 400 resin-dipped cotton canvas chairs artist Gaetano Pesce originally created for the brand’s Milan Fashion Week show in September. This time around, the covetable seats are available for purchase.

3. See an Art Show in a Former Car Showroom

The Miami Design District is also becoming something of a destination for pop-up gallery shows and curator-led presentations open to the public. “100 Years” , the seventh annual group exhibition co-hosted by blue chip galleries Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, will open from Tuesday to Sunday in the historic Buick Building. The former automotive showroom will feature pieces by artists including Theaster Gates, Taryn Simon, and Urs Fischer whose work explores the interplay of past, present, and future through a range of mediums.

Around the corner, “Boil, Toil + Trouble” , the inaugural group exhibition organized by curator Zoe Lukov and cultural producer Abby Pucker through their non-profit Art in Common, will open from Tuesday through December 11. Alluding to rising seas levels and other threats from climate change, it features 46 artists whose practice engages with magic, ritual, and water, including renowned works by Marina Abramović and Ana Mendieta alongside new commissions from Naomi Fisher, Loni Johnson, Jillian Mayer, Nereida Patricia, and Jamilah Sabur.

4. Get Styled for the Perfect Art Selfie

germane barnes, miami design district

Before posing in front of the Fly’s Eye geodesic dome—or one of the new super colorful and super ’grammable Carnival-inspired feathered seating capsules created by Germane Barnes, 2022 winner of the Miami Design District’s annual neighborhood commission—why not get a festive new fit from one of the area boutiques?

To celebrate the launch of the genderless Giorgio Armani LOVE capsule collection—which features monochromatic jewel tone knitwear, sweatshirts, and Bermuda shorts—four whimsical blue animal sculptures by Italian artist Marcantonio are being hidden around the Miami District District. Scan a QR code to join these creatures on an augmented reality adventure, which—spoiler alert—ends at the Giorgio Armani store. If sparkling surfaces are more your thing, the Valentino shop is ready to party arty with the Party Collection 2022, featuring iridescent brocade caftans, sequin embroidery-and-feather minidresses, crystal appliqué platform sandals, and more.

5. Talk About Sex By Madonna

madonna sex, yves saint laurent rive gauche

Three decades after its publication, Madonna’s Sex —famous for its LGBTQ+-inclusive erotic content and liberated views of sexual self-expression—is still making waves. To ring in the big 3-0, Madonna and Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello are teaming up to display large-format prints from the Steven Meisel-lensed coffee table book in an ephemeral beachfront gallery from Tuesday to Sunday. T-shirts and tote bags emblazoned with the tome’s iconic BDSM-tinged images and a special re-edition of 800 copies will also be available to purchase, with proceeds benefitting Raising Malawi, Madonna’s pediatric AIDS charity.

6. Fall in Love with the Animal Kingdom’s Biggest Heart

petroc sesti, faena art

Faena Art’s Miami Art Week programming, on view from Tuesday to Sunday, features public art works installed throughout the Faena Arts District in Miami Beach. These include three projects on the sand: 2022 Faena Art Prize winner Paula de Solminihac’s pink-and-green wooden climbing structure Morning Glory, named for the flowering vine seen on Florida beaches; artist duo Wright Millares’ light sculpture Patria y Vida ; and the Living Room, a new experiential installation using Web3 technology from Rain Room -creators Random International.

Andrés Reisinger’s iridescent floating Pink Meditation Buoys beckon just off shore, while Heart of Okeanos, Petroc Sesti’s 5-foot tall scale model of a blue whale’s heart charms visitors to the Faena hotel lobby. The later piece, made with a carbon sequestering sculpture material called CarbonXinc, will return to the sea next spring as part of the ReefLine, a planned 7-mile long underwater sculpture park.

7. Discover Art Everywhere

Miami Art Week might be just one week a year, but the Magic City is home to world class public art year round. Dejha Carrington, an independent curator and co-founder of Commissioner, an art membership program that helps people collect the work of contemporary artists in their cities, will lead a daily On Art Walk in Miami Beach from Tuesday to Saturday. The 1-hour guided tour, which is free with pre-registration , commences in Collins Canal Park, and highlights 12 public art gems including a monumental 13 x 19 foot decal of Black and queer visual activist Zanele Muholi’s self-portrait mounted on Miami Beach City Hall and Erin Thurlow’s DONT GO, a crossing sign outside the Bass Museum of Art programmed with poignant phrases written by schoolchildren. Participants can take On’s Cloudaway sneakers out for a test run.

8. Visit a Satellite Art Fair

nada miami

Art Basel Miami Beach may be the main show in town, but it’s far from the only one one, with more than 20 art fairs pitching their tents in greater Miami this week. A few of note include: Untitled Art , open Tuesday to Saturday, which added a Nest sector to offer subsidized booths to emerging galleries coming from outside mainstream art hubs; Prizm , open Tuesday to December 11, exhibiting Black artists from across Africa and the global African Diaspora; and the 20th edition of NADA Miami , open Wednesday to Saturday, which features a Curated Spotlight section organized by Jack Shainman Gallery director and We Buy Gold founder Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels showcasing diverse voices.

9. Consider the Similarities Between Jewelry and Sofas

design miami

Open Wednesday to Sunday, Design Miami/ —the furniture, lighting, and objets d’art fair that runs alongside Art Basel Miami Beach—is looking more and more like a fashion week, thanks to the number of fashion brands and designers participating. Artist Lukas Gschwandtner has created a series a series of wearable canvas sculptures for Fendi that reference historical portraits of women reclining on chaises, daybeds, and other soft furniture.

Dolce & Gabbana is presenting its Alta Gioielleria high jewelry collection at the fair for the first time, and hosting a panel discussion on Friday with jewelry historian Carol Wooton, curator Emily Stoehrer, and gallerist Elisabetta Cipriani titled “High Jewelry Design: An Ancient Art in a Modern World.” And designer-turned-cermacist Leena Similu (an alumna of Stella McCartney and Jil Sander) will debut her new collection of glazed stoneware figures at the Future Perfect booth.

10. Save the Best for Last

Art Basel Miami Beach opens at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Thursday, a day later than usual (preview days are Tuesday and Wednesday). And it’s well worth the wait. Now in its 20th year, Miami Art Week’s flagship fair is bigger than ever: 282 premier galleries from 38 countries and territories are presenting, with 25 participating for the first time. Highlights include solo presentations of vibrant new works by painter Tonia Nneji at Lagos and Los Angeles-based Rele Gallery and never-before-seen photographs and sculptures by artist (and Harper’s BAZAAR contributor) John Edmonds at New York-based Company Gallery.

Louis Vuitton will showcase a curated selection of creative collaborations and original artworks from starry friends of the brand including Alex Katz and Richard Prince paintings, two wax self-portraits by Yayoi Kusama, a Stephen Sprouse skate deck and trunk, and a Takashi Murakami readymade panda sculpture. A preview selection of pieces from the maison’s new 10th anniversary Kusama collaboration will also join the party.

72 Hours in Basel

Our itinerary for the fair week ahead: art, coffee, parties, and friends..

In partnership with BMW Group Culture

Basel Basel — as the art world likes to call it, distinguishing the premier fair from its Miami and Hong Kong editions — is back! There’s lots of excitement brewing as the first Art Basel to take place when most borders have opened back up post-Covid. Alongside catching a pulse on the art market, we’ve got lots of museums shows to see, events to experience, and restaurants to chow down at (although TBH, Basel is not  the best food city).

I can get carried away with planning trips… so our guide this week is our unofficial official ArtDrunk itinerary. If you’re in Basel, put it to good use! And for those following along from afar, head over to our Instagram where we’ll be sharing daily recaps of what we saw and what we loved.

Sadly I think everything is out of my price range, but there’s no harm in window shopping 🙂

Monday, June 13th

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer at Art Basel

Getting through the jetlag of any transatlantic travel is usually possible only through pure adrenaline. Luckily, I like to say that art (with an oat latte) gives me life.

7:00am: Bosco Sodi’s Tabula Rasa at Barfüsserkirche. Right away, I’ll be up early to see Bosco, a long-time friend and artist. For the Parcours section of Art Basel (basically sculptures and performances activated around the city), he’s dropping 365 balls of clay, each of which contain seeds of corn, squash, and beans. Part of waking up so early is to actually partake in putting the balls together and helping out with the install. At the end of the week, you’re free to take one to plant at home. More Info

9:00am: Team Meeting at XOXO Café Bar. Taylor’s in town too! We both need our coffee, so we’ll meet up for some caffeine and planning for the week. The café doubles as a bar, so we’ll also be scoping out the spot for a potential nightcap. More Info

11:00am: Liste Art Fair. Let the craziness commence… The first of the art fairs to open features 82 galleries. Many of our favorites are exhibiting this year, such as Matthew Brown, Emalin, and François Ghebaly. We’re especially excited to see one piece by ceramic artist Sharif Farrag. We filmed him making it back in February . When I visited Liste in 2019, the vibe was great — it was held in an old brewery, where fairgoers could go to the rooftop for a drink or a smoke. This year they’ve moved locations, but we’re still confident in the good vibes. More Info

1:00pm: Art Basel Parcours.  Although Bosco was top of mind, there are 20 other artists with activations around the city, including Tomás Saraceno, Jimmie Durham, and Solange Pessoa.  More Info

3:00pm: Art Basel Unlimited. I always forget that the week’s events start much earlier than your usual fair. With Art Basel Unlimited as the prelude to the main event, I’m heading in right at the opening to sneak in photos and videos (trying to stay on top of fast content turnaround). More Info

6:00pm: Design Miami. This is a good time to thank our partner for the week: BMW Group Culture . This year, they’re collaborating with Superblue and artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer to feature “Pulse Topology”. The immersive artwork will be installed right in the foyer of Design Miami and be made up over 6,000 suspended lightbulbs, activated upon sensing your heartbeat.  More Info

7:00pm: Dinner at Restaurant Fiorentina. Never been here before, but this is where my friends booked a big group dinner. Aside from the art, I love art fair weeks for catching up with friends from all over the world. It’s fairly unique to the art industry where we’re always bopping from city to city, seeing art and having a good time. More Info

Tuesday, June 14th

Art Basel Basel

11:00am: Art Basel Preview. So the whole reason everyone is in town to begin with kicks off on the second day. Not too much to add here for now, but from the previews we’ve been sent, excited for heavy-hitters like Joan Mitchell and Njideka Akunyili Crosby, as well as up and coming artists like Matthew Krishanu and Tunji Adeniyi-Jones. More Info

2:00pm: Veal Sausage Lunch. By the early afternoon, hopefully we’ll have at least made it through the first floor. If so, I’ll reward myself with a classic Basel bratwurst. This seems like the most polarizing of foods in town — people often point to this sausage paired with one piece of white bread as the poster child of the not-so-great food. I tend to agree, but at this point it’s such an iconic part of the Basel experience, I can’t head home without at least one of them. More Info

2:30pm: Food Truck (Second) Lunch. Let’s be real a single sausage won’t fill me up, so you’ll find me outside by the food trucks deciding between burritos, ramen, and burgers. More Info

3:00pm: Back to the fair!

8:00pm: Dinner at Rostiger Anker. Whenever I think back to my first and only Basel experience, this takes the cake for best memory. I had just barely started to run ArtDrunk full-time, and dinner here was a spontaneous get-together meeting so many of my favorite people in the art world to this day. (Shoutout to Rachel if you’re reading this!). I don’t remember what we ate, but it was yummy enough. And sitting right on the edge of the Rhine River was a refreshing post-fair and pre-party activity. More Info

11:00pm: Perrotin Party. If you haven’t heard, Perrotin throws the biggest parties . Their annual event in Basel takes over an entire church, this year being no different. If they have tequila, you’ll find me on the dance floor.

Wednesday, June 15th

Michael Armitage at the Kunsthalle Basel

With only 24 hours left, it’s a quick dash to visit all the museums. While Basel isn’t super packed with institutions (a good thing during a busy week like this), the city truly shines in the sheer quality of its shows and collections.

10:00am. Mondrian at the Beyeler. Easily one of my top three favorite museums in the world, Fondation Beyeler is the best retreat away from the fairs. They’ve always got the most insane exhibitions of 20th Century art, with this year being no different. Early Piet Mondrian works will be on view, showing his artistic development leading up to his more iconic minimal forms. More Info

12:00pm. Michael Armitage at the Kunsthalle. Visiting one of Armitage’s solo exhibitions has long been on my art wish list. I’ve always missed them by just a few weeks (i.e. at the Royal Academy, MoMA, and the Norval Foundation). But what’s that saying, 7th time’s the charm? I’m eager to consume his moody paintings and so glad I booked a hotel nearby so it won’t be too hard for more than a couple visits. More Info

1:00pm. Picasso and El Greco at the Kunstmuseum.  Alright, I do love Picasso and El Greco, which I’ll be checking out, but I’ve been dreaming of the all black Calder mobile hanging in the museum’s main stairwell ever since I saw it for the first time in 2019. It’s such a majestic piece and photographs so well. Expect to see it on our ‘gram. Brice Marden also has a show on view. More Info

4:00pm: Gabrielle Goliath at Kunsthaus Baselland.  I’m a total newbie when it comes to Goliath’s work. I can’t say no to immersive films though, and the colors in the install photos seem so hypnotizing that I’m ready to cap off the trip sitting down and leaning back on the pillows they’ve laid out for visitors.  More Info

7:00pm: Dinner at Walliser Kanne. Ok, I lied. I do need to have some sustenance before heading to my final party of the week. We received tons of recommendations for Italian restaurants, which honestly looked delicious. But we’re in Switzerland, so we’re going to cap it off with some good ol’ fondue. More Info

Giovanni Carmin e :

‘Unlimited 2022 is decidedly intense, no less a reflection on the contradictory era in which we live. About Parcours

The Parcours sector at Art Basel is a distinctive showcase of site-specific installations, sculptures, interventions, and performances situated in public spaces and historic sites throughout the city of Basel. Curated by a guest curator, Parcours encourages a deeper engagement between the artworks and the urban environment, inviting visitors to explore the city’s rich cultural and architectural heritage while encountering thought-provoking contemporary art pieces that create new dialogues and perspectives.

The 2024 edition of Parcours is curated for the first time by Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute New York. For this newly envisioned edition, Art Basel’s free outdoor sector is moving closer to the fair building and Messeplatz. Hessler’s concept for Parcours is a curated exhibition that meanders through empty stores and operational shops, a hotel, a restaurant, a distillery, and other quotidian spaces on Basel’s Clarastrasse. Through ambitious projects, many of them site-specific and newly produced, the sector explores transformation and circulation in processes of trade, globalization, and ecology.

Clarastrasse, the street leading from the fair to the river and connecting the new part of the city with the old town, is currently undergoing rapid transformation that mirrors the changes in the fabric of many locales post-Covid. Leading towards the Rhine, itself a body of water through which globalization and migration have connected and shaped Europe, Parcours’s relocation galvanizes artistic responses to these ongoing processes.

The artists’ projects will explore flows of information and goods as well as seepages between the hyperlocal and the global, suggesting that those are far from uniform movements, but complex, unwieldy, and uneven processes. A number of artists will address ecological systems, the affordances of nature that are exploited through extraction, and increasingly changing climates. Several projects will examine how information circulates and by whom, from traditional forms of storytelling to newspapers to abstraction as a vehicle for spiritual communication and communion. Again others refer to change and knowledge transfers across generations and communities, across time and geographies, through migration, affect, and somatic memory.

Discover the 2024 artists and galleries below.

Parcours Night

Parcours Night will be hosted on Wednesday, June 12, from 8 to 11pm, offering a festive night filled with live performances and other acts along Clarastrasse and at the Merian. All Parcours locations will have extended opening hours to provide visitors a unique experience.
