New Grocery Store To Open On Concord Pike In Wilmington

' src=

There certainly is no shortage of grocery stores in and around Wilmington.  We’ve got Giant, ACME, Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart, amongst a host of others.  But now we can add one more to the list as Aldi continues to open more locations in Delaware.

Aldi happens to be one of my favorite places to shop.  If you’re not familiar with the brand, they describe themselves as being a store designed with savings in mind.  They offer plenty of more cost effective options with their own brands, which in my opinion are quite good.  The cheese selection is amazing.  I’ve never had a problem or complaint about meats or produce.  They offer a wide variety of snacks, breads and every day pantry items and even have a discount section for home goods.  Anything from holiday decor to outdoor games.  I picked up an outdoor baseball slip and slide game for under $20 and during the summer months, we got plenty of use out of that thing.

Concord Pike In Wilmington

The new Aldi store is coming to 4130 Concord Pike in Wilmington, according to Delaware Business Times , where Ashley Furniture used to be.  This will be the 10th Aldi location to open in Delaware.  Others are located in Camden, Christiana, Milford, Millsboro, Dover, Middletown, Rehoboth Beach, Smyrna and another location in Wilmington.

There is no word as to when the store plans to open.

It looks like Aldi's expanding again in Delaware. Here's what we know

German discount supermarket giant Aldi looks to be expanding yet again in Delaware.

Realtors NAI Emory Hill announced last week that they've closed a 10-year lease with the grocery chain to open a store in the former location of Ashley Furniture, at 1430 Concord Pike in Rockland at the border of Brandywine Hundred.

This would be the tenth Aldi in Delaware since their first in 2016, part of a rapid expansion of the German-based discount grocer across the United States. Aldi opened two Delaware stores last year , in Millsboro and Milford. Nationwide, it's opened more than 100 stores each year since 2021. With more than 2,300 stores, it's now the third-largest grocer in the country by number of locations.

Aldi also acquired 400 locations of southern grocers Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket last year . It's unclear how many of these will be converted to Aldi stores.

Aldi is known as a low-cost alternative to traditional grocery stores. Its stores are smaller than most grocery stores and offer products almost exclusively from their own private-label brands. Products are displayed in the packaging they're shipped in, one of the company's many cost-saving measures that allow them to staff fewer employees in each store.

The 33,000 square foot building at 1430 Concord Pike is significantly larger than most existing Aldi stores, which historically hover at or below 20,000 square feet.

But American Aldis appear to be getting bigger these days. Company documents now list Aldi space requirements for new locations as closer to 22,000 square feet, and the Milford and Millsboro locations that opened last year were around the 20,000 square foot mark. Even larger Aldis have opened in Philadelphia and Connecticut in recent years, fueling speculation that the German grocer is testing out larger-format stores that are closer to the size of typical American supermarkets ,

But a super-sized Aldi is far from assured. In addition to retail, the location is also zoned to allow warehousing and shipping, according to a Department of Land Use letter in 2022. Subleasing part of a larger building to other small businesses is also a common business practice, and some grocery observers expect Aldi will do exactly this if it converts larger Winn-Dixie stores into Aldi locations.

Aldi did not immediately respond to requests for information about the location. The property, owned by Maryland-based company LDB Wilmington LLC, was most recently home to Ashley Furniture. Before that, it was a Circuit City.

What to Know About Ukraine’s Cross-Border Assault Into Russia

The incursion caught Russia by surprise and signified a shift in tactics for Kyiv after more than two years of war with Russia.

Ukraine pressed ahead with its offensive inside Russian territory on Sunday , pushing toward more villages and towns nearly two weeks into the first significant foreign incursion in Russia since World War II.

But even as the Ukrainian army was advancing in Russia’s western Kursk region, its troops were steadily losing ground on their own territory. The Russian military is now about eight miles from the town of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, according to open-source battlefield maps . The capture of Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian stronghold, would bring Moscow one step closer to its long-held goal of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

That underscored the gamble Ukraine’s army took when it crossed into Russia: throwing its forces into a daring offensive that risked weakening its own positions on the eastern front.

Whether that strategy will prove advantageous remains to be seen, analysts say.

On the political front, the offensive has already had some success: Ukraine’s rapid advance has embarrassed the Kremlin and has altered the narrative of a war in which Kyiv’s forces had been on the back foot for months.

Here’s what to know about Ukraine’s cross-border operation, which President Biden said last week was creating a “real dilemma” for the Russian government.

What happened?

Ukrainian troops and armored vehicles stormed into the Kursk region of western Russia on Aug. 6 , swiftly pushing through Russian defenses and capturing several villages.

The assault, prepared in the utmost secrecy , opened a new front in the 30-month war and caught not only Russia off guard: Some Ukrainian soldiers and U.S. officials also said they lacked advance notice.

Analysts and Western officials estimate that Ukraine deployed about 1,000 troops at the start of the incursion. But military analysts say that it has since poured more troops into the operation to try to hold and expand its positions.

How far into Russia have Ukrainian troops advanced?

Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s top commander, said last week that his army now controlled more than 80 Russian settlements in the Kursk region, including Sudzha , a town of 6,000 residents. His claims could not be independently verified, although analysts say that Sudzha is highly likely to be under full Ukrainian control.

Ukraine’s advance in the Kursk region has slowed in recent days, according to open-source maps of the battlefield based on combat footage and satellite images, as Russia sends in more reinforcements. The Ukrainian army appears to be trying to dig in along the border area rather than pushing deeper into Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine acknowledged that on Saturday, saying : “Now we are reinforcing our positions. The foothold of our presence is getting stronger.”

Why is this significant?

Kyiv has regularly bombarded Russian oil refineries and airfields with drones since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. It has also helped stage two other ground attacks in Russia. Those, however, were smaller forays by Russian exile groups backed by the Ukrainian army, and they ended in quick retreats.

Until two weeks ago, Ukrainian forces had not counterattacked in Russia. The gains in Kursk are the quickest for Ukrainian forces since they reclaimed the Kherson region of their own country in November 2022.

How has the Kremlin responded?

As Ukrainian forces pushed deeper into Russia, Moscow scrambled to shore up its defenses, and President Vladimir V. Putin convened his security services to coordinate a response. The Russian military said it was sending more troops and armored vehicles to try to repel the attack, with Russian television broadcasting images of columns of military trucks.

Military analysts and U.S. officials have said the Russian command had so far brought in reinforcements mainly from within Russia so as to not deplete its units on the Ukrainian battlefield, in what they described as a disorganized effort.

“Russia is still pulling together its reaction,” Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, NATO’s top military commander, said last week during a talk at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He described the Russian response as having been “fairly slow and scattered” as the authorities sorted out which military and security forces should take the lead.

And what about Putin?

The incursion has embarrassed Mr. Putin and his military establishment, prompting questions about Russia’s level of preparedness .

Underscoring how the attack rattled the Kremlin, Mr. Putin lashed out last week at the West in a tense televised meeting with his top officials. “The West is fighting us with the hands of the Ukrainians,” he said, repeating his frequent depiction of the war, which he started, as a proxy campaign against Russia by the West.

Ukraine’s incursion has brought the war into Russia like it never has before, and tens of thousands of civilians have evacuated the border area.

What is the goal of Ukraine’s incursion?

Analysts say that Ukraine’s offensive has two main aims : to draw Russian forces from the front lines in eastern Ukraine and to seize territory that could serve as a bargaining chip in future peace talks.

Mykhailo Podolyak, a top Ukrainian presidential adviser, said last week that Russia would be forced to the negotiating table only through suffering “significant tactical defeats.”

“In the Kursk region, we can clearly see how the military tool is being used objectively to persuade” Russia to enter “a fair negotiation process,” he wrote on social media .

The operation has offered a much-needed morale boost for Ukrainians, whose forces have been losing ground to Russian troops for months.

But military analysts have questioned whether Kyiv’s cross-border assault is worth the risk, given that Ukrainian forces are already stretched on the front lines of their own country.

How is it affecting the fight inside Ukraine?

Russian forces have been pummeling Ukrainian troops in the east even as Moscow races to respond to the incursion into Kursk , according to analysts, Western officials and Ukrainian soldiers.

Russia has begun to withdraw small numbers of troops from Ukraine, they said, to try to help repel the Ukrainians, but not enough to significantly affect the overall battlefield for now.

Senior American officials have said privately that they understood Kyiv’s need to change the narrative of the war, but that they were skeptical that Ukraine could hold the territory long enough to force Russia to divert significant resources from the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine.

While Kyiv’s allies have in the past been wary that Ukrainian incursions in Russia could escalate the war, the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell Fontelles, said last week that Ukraine had the bloc’s “ full support .”

Ukraine has used some Western-supplied weapons in the Kursk operation. But so far, the United States and Britain, two of Kyiv’s closes allies, have said the incursion did not violate their policies.”

What happens next?

As the Ukrainian offensive approaches its two-week mark, analysts say that Kyiv has several options, each with its own challenges.

Ukrainian forces could try to keep pushing farther into Russia, but that will become harder as Russian reinforcements arrive and Ukraine’s supply lines are stretched.

They could keep digging into the territory they now hold and try to defend it, but that could expose fixed Ukrainian positions to potentially devastating Russian airstrikes.

Or, battered by continual losses in eastern Ukraine, they could decide that they have made their point and pull back.

Thibault Fouillet, the deputy director of the Institute for Strategic and Defense Studies, a French research center, said Ukraine’s next move would depend on how Russia responds. “The coming week will be decisive,” he said.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

Ukraine’s Incursion:  Russian troops defending a pocket of territory in Russia’s Kursk region were at risk of becoming encircled, military analysts said, after Ukraine bombed bridges  that are the only routes for resupply or retreat.

Kyiv’s Risky Bet:  President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to hold Russian territory as leverage in future peace talks . But Russians who know President Vladimir Putin expect him to lash out.

Flipping the Script:  Ukraine’s incursion into Russia has not shifted the overall course of the war, but it has offered a rare chance to puncture the Kremlin’s narrative  that Russia is steadily heading toward victory.

Women in the Work Force : More and more Ukrainian women are replacing men mobilized in the army . But there are not enough of them to make up for the labor shortage affecting the economy.

Summer Camps During War: As the once carefree summers of Ukrainian childhood and young adulthood are forever altered by war, traditional camps have taken on a more patriotic tone .

Russia’s 2024 election interference has already begun

Russia is already spreading disinformation in advance of the 2024 election, using fake online accounts and bots to damage President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats, according to former U.S. officials and cyber experts.

The dissemination of attacks on Biden is part of a continuing effort by Moscow to undercut American military aid to Ukraine and U.S. support for and solidarity with NATO, experts said.

A similar effort is underway in Europe. France, Germany and Poland said this month that Russia has launched a barrage of propaganda to try to influence European parliamentary elections in June.

With Donald Trump opposing U.S. aid to Ukraine and claiming that he once warned a NATO leader that he would "encourage" Russia to attack a NATO ally if it didn't pay its share in defense spending, the potential rewards for Russian President Vladimir Putin are high, according to Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy of the German Marshall Fund.

“Not that they didn’t have an incentive to interfere in the last two presidential elections,” said Schafer, who tracks disinformation efforts by Russia and other regimes. “But I would say that the incentive to interfere is heightened right now.”

Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said Sunday on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that there’s “plenty of reason to be concerned” about Russia’s trying to interfere in the 2024 election but that he couldn’t discuss evidence related to it. He added: “We’re going to be vigilant about that.”

U.S. officials and experts are most concerned that Russia could try to interfere in the election through a “deepfake” audio or video using artificial intelligence tools or through a “hack and leak,” such as the politically damaging theft of internal Democratic Party emails by Russian military intelligence operatives in 2016.

The type of pro-Russia online propaganda campaigns that thrived on Twitter and Facebook  ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election  is now routine on every major social media platform, though it’s rare for individual accounts to go as viral now as they once did.

Those influence operations often create matching accounts on multiple sites, which vary drastically in their moderation policies. Accounts from one pro-Russia campaign that Meta, the owner of Facebook, cracked down on late last year , an English-language news influencer persona called “People Say,” are still live on other platforms, though some are dormant.

US-NEWS-SC-PRIMARY-CROSSOVER-VOTERS-1-MB

A “People Say” account on X is still visible, but it has only 51 followers and hasn’t posted in almost a year. Its counterpart on Telegram, which has become a  home for some Americans on the far right , is still actively posting divisive content and has almost 5,000 subscribers.

A perfect storm

Moscow and its proxies have long sought to exploit divisions in American society. But experts and former U.S. officials said Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, the country's deepening political polarization and sharp cuts in disinformation and election integrity teams at X and other platforms provide fertile ground to spread confusion, division and chaos.

“In many ways it’s a perfect storm of opportunity for them,” said Paul Kolbe, who worked for 25 years in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations and is now a fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. “I think, for a lot of reasons, we will see the same approach, but amplified and, I think, with some of the constraints that you might have seen taken off."

In the 2022 midterm elections, Russia primarily targeted the Democratic Party to weaken U.S. support for Ukraine, as it most likely blames Biden for forging a unified Western alliance backing Kyiv, according to a recently released U.S. intelligence assessment.

In what appears to be an effort to deepen divisions, Russia has amplified the political dispute between the Biden administration and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott over security at the Texas border over the past month. Russian politicians, bloggers, state media and bots have promoted the idea that America is headed to a new “civil war.”

It was a quintessential move by a Russian regime with a long tradition of trying to manipulate existing political rifts, like immigration, to its advantage, experts said.

But there’s so far no sign that Russia’s disinformation operation in Texas has had any significant impact, said Emerson Brooking, a senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council.

“So far, Russian operations targeting the U.S. have been opportunistic. They see whatever narrative is rising to the top, and they try to push it,” Brooking said. “Disinformation isn’t created in a vacuum. The more polarized a country is, the easier it is for foreign actors to infiltrate and hijack its political processes.”

The artificial intelligence threat

The bigger Russian threat to the 2024 election, Brooking and other experts said, could prove to be artificial intelligence-created fake audio.

An orchestrated deepfake or leak may not unfold on the national stage; instead, it could target a particularly crucial swing state or district, experts said. It might aim to discourage some voters from going to the polls or sow distrust about the accuracy of ballot counting.

The most likely disinformation scenario will be “hyper-personalized, localized attacks,” said Miles Taylor, a senior Trump administration homeland security official who has warned of the risks of another Trump presidency.

Deepfake audio, which is easy to create and  difficult to detect , has been used in recent elections in multiple countries. In the  U.S. last month, a fake Joe Biden robocall told New Hampshire Democrats not to vote in the state's primary. In the United Kingdom in November, a fake audio of London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for pro-Palestinian marches.

And two days before Slovakia’s parliamentary elections in September, a fake audio clip purported to show the leader of a pro-Western political party discussing how to rig the election. The audio was eventually debunked , and it’s unclear what effect it had on the election. But a pro-Russia party opposing aid to Ukraine won the most votes.

While an emerging cottage industry claims that software can identify whether audio or video is authentic or a deepfake, such programs are  often wrong .

Past Russian efforts

Alleged Russian information operations against Ukraine over the past two years open a window into some of the Kremlin’s tactics.

A  study published Wednesday  by the Slovakian cybersecurity company ESET found that a pro-Russia campaign has been spamming Ukrainians with false and dispiriting emails about the war with claims of heating and food shortages.

In a coordinated effort near the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022, cyberattacks temporarily  knocked key Ukrainian websites offline , while residents received spam texts telling them that ATMs in the country were down.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in United States

Other apparent Russian efforts to sow division are much simpler.

Last year, celebrities who sell personalized videos on the website Cameo, including Priscilla Presley, Mike Tyson and Elijah Wood, were tricked into inadvertently recording messages that denigrated two major enemies of the Kremlin,  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy  and  Moldovan President Maia Sandu .

The messages were overlaid with text falsely claiming that the celebrities were calling for those leaders to step down. Representatives for Wood and Presley said the celebrities recorded the videos thinking they were helping a fan with addiction. A representative for Tyson said the videos of him were fake.

In the American mainstream

In the U.S., though, Russia’s propaganda themes are now often echoed in comments from some Republican lawmakers and pro-Trump commentators, including the portrayal of Ukraine’s government as deeply corrupt.

The adoption of Russian state rhetoric in America’s political debate is a victory for Moscow, experts said. Putin’s goal is to spread doubt and division among Americans.

“An equally nice outcome for them is just what we had last time, where a third of the country doesn’t believe the vote,” Schafer said. “Democracy is questioned; the system gets questioned. So they don’t necessarily need to see their guy win to have it be a good outcome for them.”

It remains extraordinarily difficult for a remote cyberattack to take over voting systems in the U.S. and change vote counts. The American intelligence assessment of the 2022 midterms found no indication that Russia had tried to hack into election systems or ballot counting that year.

But Kolbe, the former CIA directorate of operations official, said the Kremlin would most likely see trying to penetrate U.S. voting systems as a low-risk undertaking.

“I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t,” he said. “You’d be hard-pressed to find where they would see the risk part of the equation. It gets close to zero.”

Such interference could come with plausible deniability. On the day of the 2022 midterm elections, the Mississippi secretary of state’s website, which hosts the official polling place finder for voters in Mississippi, was  knocked offline most of the day  after pro-Kremlin hacktivists on Telegram called for supporters to join in a low-level cyberattack against it.

Still, U.S. officials and disinformation analysts say Russia’s ability to manipulate voters shouldn’t be overstated. When it comes to spreading disinformation and fueling distrust in election authorities and election results, the biggest threat comes from within America’s fractured, polarized society, not from the outside.

“I am very skeptical, whether it’s 2016 or 2024, that the United States political and media culture needs any push from Russia,” said Gavin Wilde, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who specializes in Russia and information warfare.

“The Kremlin has every interest in seeing an American public, or American leadership, that’s less inclined to support Ukraine, that’s less inclined to punish Russia. Those incentives are certainly there,” he said. “But we’re already doing a pretty good job of that at home. I don’t know how much of a nudge the Kremlin thinks it needs to lend it.”

Ukraine war latest: Russia takes 'strategically important' town - as it creeps towards major population centres

Russia claims to have taken control of the Donetsk town of Niu-York, calling it a strategically important logistics hub. It comes as civilians are fleeing the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk amid heightened attacks. Leave a question for our military analysts in the box below.

Tuesday 20 August 2024 18:40, UK

  • Ukraine making 'marginal advances' in Kursk
  • Zelenskyy says situation in the east is 'difficult'
  • Russia claims to have taken control of Donetsk town of Niu-York - saying it's strategically important
  • Michael Clarke : Battle of bridges is about to begin
  • Putin 'in a position he never dreamt of in his worst nightmares'
  • Your questions answered: What is Ukraine hoping to achieve with invasion of Russia?
  • Live reporting by Samuel Osborne

That's all our live coverage on the war in Ukraine for now.

We will be back if there are any major developments this evening.

If not, we'll be back tomorrow with all the latest updates.

Before we go, here's a reminder of today's key events:

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the situation in the east is 'difficult' as Ukraine warns Russia has redirected troops into the region to continue their advance there;
  • Moscow claims to have taken the strategically important town of Niu-York as it attempts to continue across the region;
  • While Ukraine is ceding ground to Russia in the east, it has an opportunity in Kursk to seize more territory, Sky News' military analyst Professor Michael Clarke has said;
  • A fire continues to rage for a third day at a Russian oil depot hit by a Ukrainian drone attack;
  • Meanwhile, firefighters in the Ukrainian city of Ternopil are also battling a fire after a fuel reservoir was hit;
  • The US are insisting their policy on the use of American weapons in Russia has "not changed" - even in light of recent pressure from Mr Zelenskyy.

Ukraine is said to be making "marginal advances" in the Kursk region as fighting continues, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

We've brought you news on Ukraine's struggles in the east of Ukraine (see 14.35 post) but further north, Kyiv's incursion into Russia continues.

On 6 August, Ukraine threw a surprise counterpunch that saw their troops surge across the border into Russia.

Ukraine has previously claimed to have captured 1,250sq/km (480 square miles) and 92 settlements in Kursk, forcing tens of thousands to flee (see 12.53 post).

Today, Ukraine's army chief said that its forces had advanced 28-35km (17-21 miles) into Kursk.

But the US-based thinktank said that, while still making progress, Ukraine was no longer eating up Russian territory as fast as it once was.

Using geolocated footage from 19 August, Ukrainian forces were confirmed to be in Vishnevka, the ISW said, around 14km (8.5 miles) from the border.

The Russian defence ministry said that they had struck forces operating in that area - potentially tacitly acknowledging the progress Kyiv had made.

It is known that Ukraine has targeted bridges in the region, perhaps as an effort to stifle Russian attempts to counter their incursion.

But Kyiv's army chief said that Russia was moving troops from other directions to Kursk, to strengthen its positions there.

Even facing losses further east, Sky News' military analyst Professor Michael Clarke said there were still opportunities from Kyiv in Kursk nonetheless (see 12.39 post).

These pictures show Kyiv's forces on the frontline in the Donetsk region.

Russian forces have been advancing in recent days and threaten to seize key settlements, including Pokrovsk.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the situation in the east as "difficult".

Vladimir Putin's recent trip to Azerbaijan was an "effort to shift focus away" from Ukraine's Kursk attack, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

The Russian president recently spent two days in the country where he tried to present himself as an "effective diplomat", the research group said.

The content and presentation of the visit did not stray beyond the usual, but...

"The timing of this visit is noteworthy given the ongoing situation in Kursk Oblast and the Kremlin's continued efforts to downplay the Ukrainian incursion's magnitude and impact," ISW said.

They added: "Russian state media focused on Putin's trip to Azerbaijan, amplifying minute details, likely in part to divert attention from the uncomfortable situation in Russia by saturating the information space with a showcase of the Kremlin's global diplomatic engagement and alleged successes."

Away from the battlefield, Ukraine has passed a law paving the way to ban the Russia-linked minority Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in the country.

Kyiv has cast the UOC as complicit in the Kremlin's invasion.

They have accused it of aiding Moscow's 30-month assault by spreading pro-Russian propaganda and housing spies.

A new bill passed in parliament bans the Russian Orthodox Church and the government will assemble a list of "affiliated" groups who will face similar treatment.

Russian security services (FSB) have detained a scientist over suspected treason, according to reports.

A scientist in Moscow allegedly carried out suspected cyberattacks on behalf of Ukraine, Interfax news agency has said.

The distributed denial-of-service attacks were said to have been carried out on critical infrastructure on behalf of Ukrainian security services, it quoted the FSB as saying.

It was added that the scientist sent money to the Ukrainian military, as well as gathering information on Russian armed forces.

The suspect, the FSB claimed, had confessed, although it was not immediately clear when the arrest was made.

Russian media outlets published what they claimed was footage of the scientist's detention.

Footage also shows a man arrested in a snow-covered city, suggesting they had been detained some time ago.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the situation in the east, near Toretsk, is "difficult", amid Russian advances in the region.

There have been 14 combat clashes reported in the Toretsk area and 34 in the Pokrovsk sector since the start of the day, Ukraine's general staff said.

Russia has sent more troops to Pokrovsk today, according to the Ukrainian army, to support the offensive there - seemingly in an effort to capitalise on momentum.

In our 13.37 post we mentioned that Russia had taken Niu-York, which is less than six miles (10km) from Toretsk, and this morning we reported on the evacuation of the nearby Pokrovsk (8.05am post).

Despite successes in its Kursk invasion, Kyiv has struggled in its east, losing ground to Russian forces.

"The Ukrainians have been under tremendous pressure [there] for several months, but it's becoming intolerable now at Toretsk - which is quite a small place but it's important because it's close to Pokrovsk and Chasiv Yar," Sky News' military analyst Professor Michael Clarke said.

The latter, Prof Clarke said, is important because it is high ground that controls movement towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, and Pokrovsk is important because it is a transport hub and controls movements north and westwards.

Prof Clarke added: "They're struggling to maintain their hold on the area.

"And that's the problem here... Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are the really important places, if Russia gets them, it gets the whole of the Donbas."

Russia has summoned a senior US diplomat to protest the presence of American journalists in Kursk.

Moscow has complained about the "provocative actions" of journalists in the region.

On 6 August, Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia, taking many by surprise.

Now, the Russian foreign ministry has said it told US Charge d'Affaires Stephanie Holmes that reporters had illegally crossed into the region too.

It added that Russia intended to prosecute them.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was recently freed in a historic prison swap - after being jailed on alleged espionage charges.

Russia has claimed to have taken control of the Donetsk town of Niu-York.

Moscow described the town as a strategically important logistics hub, in eastern Ukraine.

While Russia refers to Niu-York as Novgorodskoye - the Russian spelling of the settlement's Soviet-era name - Ukraine gave it back its original name in 2021.

In a statement, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have "liberated" the town.

Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian military said that heavy fighting was under way in the Toretsk sector, including in Niu-York.

Sky News has not verified Russia's claims, but if true it would show Moscow is creeping ever closer to the larger population centres in the region.

A. When an order is placed, the anticipated total is provided, including estimated taxes and fees. The final total charged to your card may be different if any changes occur during the shopping process. Examples include:

  • An item is out of stock and you’re refunded.
  • An item from your original order needs to be replaced, and the replacement item has a different price.
  • An item you ordered is sold by weight, and the exact weight is slightly different than the estimate.
  • Your personal shopper fulfills a special request for an item.

Tucker Carlson Amazed By the Shopping Carts at Russian Grocery Store

By stephen douglas | feb 16, 2024.

Former President Trump Addresses The Turning Points Action Conference In West Palm Beach, California

Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, has died in prison at the age of 47 . Navalny, who previously survived a poisoning , recently disappeared before he showed up again in a remote Russian prison in the Arctic Circle. No cause of death has been released.

In other news, former FOX News host and current Twitter personality, Tucker Carlson recently traveled to Russia to interview Vladimir Putin. During his visit he took the opportunity to see the sights in Russia and was blown away. Here's a clip of Carlson being amazed that a grocery store has that thing where you put a coin in and you get a shopping cart and then when you return the shopping cart, you get your coin back.

Fantastic tech advancement! Guess who hasn't been in an airport anytime in the last 40 years? pic.twitter.com/83WVFmXIXM — Cʜʀɪs Sᴛᴇɪɴ (@chrissteinplays) February 15, 2024

Truly amazing. You definitely don't see something like that at Aldi .

With stuff like this its no surprise that Carlson gushed about how Moscow was " so much nicer than any city in my country ." And yet... despite all the nice things that Carlson has said about his trip to Russia, he still managed to leave the Russian President unimpressed . Putin is notoriously unforgiving like that.

Aldi Sells Holographic Mule Mugs That Add Personality To Your Bar Cart

Brighten up!!

moscow mule mugs in gold, copper, rainbow at aldi

To know Aldi grocery stores is to love them, mainly because their prices are great and their selection is really unique. You can get your typical produce, fun snacks, peculiar liquors, and houseware items all in one store so it's no surprise customers keep coming back for more. Earlier this year, the store's holographic utensils became a popular item for fans, and now Aldi is selling matching rainbow mule glasses.

Aldi is now selling metal mugs meant for cocktails like the Moscow Mule, but instead of just the plain copper color has them available in a shiny gold and a vibrant holographic hue that adds a touch of personality to any table setting. Each set contains two mugs and goes for about $10, though this can always vary depending on location. @Aldi.mademedoit saw the collection of mule mugs at their Aldi store, and other fans shared how excited they were to pick them up for themselves.

"I bought the rainbow finish! I have SO many kitchen items in that finish! And these mugs are great for any drink, not just Mules!! The metal mug keeps cold drink cold longer, and gets the flavor nice and fresh tasting," one fan wrote. I'm sold!!

Inside an ALDI store tour + shopping tips!

inside an aldi store tour

I’ve taught coupon classes for around 5 years now. And while much of the focus is on using coupons in stores, the bigger picture is learning how to save money on groceries. I understand that coupons may not be the answer in every case – and that’s a large part of the reason I recommend finding an ALDI store near you. In our household, we shop ALDI weekly to save on produce, milk and items we can’t find on sale elsewhere. I do my best to highlight ALDI and what the store is about in my presentation – and often remark that I wish I could take everyone there on a field trip to show them the store in action.

It’s a wish that hasn’t been possible. Until now. This July, ALDI accepted my request for a local “field trip” of sorts. This rare corporate-led tour allowed for 15 people to attend during store hours – and those who were selected were quite impressed by what they learned!

I know that many more people wanted to be part of the fun, so I have summarized the main ideas of the tour in this post. Come along with me inside an ALDI store tour!

Inside an ALDI Store Tour

We start outside, where we’re joined by Ryan Fritsch (Webberville, MI Division Vice President), Tricia Snider (Director of Operations) and Mitch Hall (District Manager). ALDI currently runs more than 1,300 store locations spanning across 32 states. New stores open each year, and next year ALDI stores will open in California for the first time. After brief introductions, we head to the ALDI cart area.

ALDI carts

Carts are available for your shopping convenience – at no cost to you. However, each cart is outfitted with a chain that is released when you insert a quarter. This is only a short-term deposit, and you will get that very same quarter back when you return your cart to this area. This small step means that ALDI does not need to pay someone to fetch your cart from the parking lot, and it reduces the chance that your vehicle will be damaged by a runaway cart.

MY ALDI TIP: Keep a quarter in your car for ALDI shopping trips.  My “ALDI quarter” has a special place in the vehicle so that I’m ready to grab a cart. My family knows it’s not to be spent on anything else!

The ALDI Philosophy

As we head into the store, we learn more about the ALDI philosophy. Words like efficiency, quality and value are mentioned in almost every explanation of what ALDI operates the way it does. Every aspect of the store’s operation and product line is well thought out. Nothing is overlooked – from employees to suppliers to the way items are packaged and stocked. With a strong commitment towards an efficient approach in everything – ALDI is able to offer the highest quality products at the lowest cost . Our corporate tour guides share this passion, and their excitement is contagious.

aldi store tour

The basic idea? ALDI generates savings for its customers through a low-overhead, focused approach that includes:

  • Volume purchasing : By concentrating its full buying power on 1,300 of the most commonly purchased grocery items in the most common size, ALDI secures noteworthy discounts.
  • Exclusive products : More than 90 percent of products at ALDI are their own exclusive store brands rather than national brands. And they stand behind them all the way. Don’t miss their Double Guarantee!
  • No hidden costs : ALDI has a streamlined approach that considers every cost of store operation – including electricity, store bags, credit card fees, you name it. The goal is always to keep prices low and pass that savings along to the customer without sacrificing quality.

ALDI Store Brands

ALDI works with suppliers to create unique store brands, standard varieties of the items that people shop for most. You won’t find every variety of spaghetti sauce on the shelf, but you can choose from 2-3 popular flavors, for example.

Don’t let the store brands scare you away. Making sure these brands measure up is a business that ALDI takes very seriously.

aldi double guarantee

  • In the ALDI Test Kitchen , ALDI uses blind taste testing to make sure products meet or exceed the quality, taste and appearance of national name brands. Each product is tested at least twice each year!
  • All ALDI food products are backed by the DOUBLE GUARANTEE: If for any reason a customer is not 100 percent satisfied with any ALDI food product, ALDI will gladly replace the product AND refund the purchase price.
  • All of the buyers and manufacturers are expected to improve the nutritional profile of these products – which brings some exciting improvements this year:
As part of our dedication to the well-being of our customers, we are committed to removing partially hydrogenated oils (also known as trans-fat) , certified synthetic colors and added MSG from our exclusive brand food products by the end of 2015. This decision delivers on our ongoing commitment to meet the evolving preferences of our customers.                             — Ryan Fritsch, ALDI Webberville division vice president

MY ALDI TIP: Try something new each time you visit ALDI. If you’re brave, ask your family to do a blind taste test between the ALDI brand and a national competitor. Chances are, you’ll be surprised – and if you’re not, take advantage of the Double Guarantee.

ALDI Products: Honorable Mentions

aldi products honorable mentions

  • Moser-Roth Chocolates (and other tasty German-made varieties) These international chocolates are a customer favorite!
  • Winking Owl Wines These wines start at $2.89 and are a favorite to use in cooking. You’ll also find a variety of very affordable, quality wines. Check out the educational labels!
  • Benton’s Caramel Coconut Fudge Cookies A B2B reader favorite, this product also won a Better Homes & Gardens award this year !
  • Baker’s Corner Baking Morsels in white, semi-sweet or milk chocolate or butterscotch Not only are these chips reasonably priced for baking, they’re also nut-free (a must for any allergy family).
  • SimplyNature Organic Coconut Oil Unrefined, cold-pressed organic virgin coconut oil for only $4.99 (14 oz)!
  • PurAqua Purified Water, case of 24 Always a low price on water bottles – prices start at $1.99 per case.
  • L’Oven Fresh Breads Made with no high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or colors.
  • liveGfree Gluten Free products You’ll find these pantry and frozen items throughout the store. Gluten free items can be some of the most expensive specialty items, but prices are much better at ALDI!
  • ALDI Cheeses High quality cheeses from Havarti to goat cheese with prices you can’t beat.

MY ALDI TIP: Keep a price book listing the prices of frequently purchased items and how much they cost at ALDI. Use this list as a benchmark for your shopping. You may be amazed how often ALDI prices will beat out other store and national brands!

ALDI Produce

ALDI produce

ALDI stores do not use produce scales – it can slow down an efficient checkout process, after all. You’ll find items either already bagged or packaged (including bananas, grapes, apples, kiwi) or sold individually (plums, peaches, limes, cucumbers). You’ll still be able to calculate a per-pound price easily.

artisan lettuce

ALDI teams up with top growers throughout the United States, including local growers, to provide the freshest produce possible. We currently carry nearly 70 varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables . We’ve increased our range, emphasized presentation and freshness and – as always – sustained the lowest prices. Our Double Guarantee is unique in the marketplace and applies to all products, including produce . Our Quality Control Program at the Webberville warehouse ensures produce quality meets our standards on a daily basis.  A dedicated group of people who have been trained on identifying quality though product cutting and testing work to assure appropriate firmness in apples, measure sweetness in strawberries and sizing in grapes.                              — Ryan Fritsch, ALDI Webberville division vice president

MY ALDI TIP: Shop the best produce prices at ALDI early in the week, then again at the end of the sale to stretch the savings even longer. Don’t forget that some fresh items freeze well for future use!

ALDI Checkout

aldi flowers

My favorite way to buy beautiful fresh flowers –                                                    a great price and they last just as long!

Even the checkout is designed for efficiency as well as saving money and time. Take a look at any ALDI product box and you’ll notice it includes a bar code on almost every surface, ensuring that the cashier can scan it quickly the first time. ALDI accepts cash, credit, debit or Bridge cards. And there’s no need to juggle coupons, since manufacturer coupons aren’t accepted at ALDI. ALDI exclusive brands already cost up to 50 percent less than national brands and ALDI has everyday low prices.

After scanning each item, your cashier will return it to your cart. Pay for your order, then you can move your cart to the counter area and bag it the way you like. That means no squished loaves of bread – unless, of course, you like them that way!

MY ALDI TIP: Keep reusable bags in your car for ALDI shopping trips. This makes things easier and keeps you prepared at checkout. Don’t worry if you forget – you can grab empty store boxes at no charge (an ALDI associate can grab some for you in the back if you don’t see any). Paper and plastic bags are also available for purchase for a small price ($0.06-$0.10).

What did B2B readers think of the tour?

Most of the Bargains to Bounty readers on the tour had been reluctant to shop ALDI for one reason or another. Their comments (shared on Facebook ) after learning about the store and products showed a big change in thinking! Give ALDI a try and you may be next!

  • Well, I am officially an ALDI shopper! I have always wanted to check it out but never did! It’s amazing what this store has to offer. Plus the prices are outstanding! Our tour guides were very in depth and valued the business! I love how ALDI takes care of their employees and wants the best products and prices for their customers! I can’t wait to go shopping and stock up on the great deals! ?
  • I loved learning the business metrics of ALDI. That was so neat to see the various subtle ways they cut expenses but still ensure a good shopping experience for the customers.
  • It was my first time in an ALDI and I’m grateful for the tour. I appreciate all the cost savings they do as a business without raising prices for the customer. Also impressed with the cleanliness of the store and organization of the stock rooms. And that they sent corporate to do the tour…that in itself is impressive and speaks to the integrity of their business.
  • I loved it. I will be shopping there without a doubt. So clean and I love how it is a grocery store that I feel like I can be done shopping within a half hour. I feel like I’m at the larger stores forever!
  • I was shocked to see such fresh fruit and veggies and meat. I am converted! I can’t wait to shop ALDI next week!

aldi truth

Disclosure: I have not been reimbursed for this post. Facts shown above were shared on the ALDI store tour and can be officially found on the ALDI website. Any opinions shared are entirely my own, as a result of being a loyal ALDI shopper who values saving money. I have been shopping ALDI stores since 1997, when I lived on a small budget in the Chicago area. ALDI is also our first stop when we reach our vacation destination, which means I’ve now shopped dozens of different locations in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio and Germany.

You say we can calculate per pound easily on produce? Please tell me how. The store I shop doesn’t have any scales for us to use before going to checkout, so I never buy the fruit that is priced per item, like peaches or plums. Do other stores have scales? Ours doesn’t have shopping carts either.

August 10, 2015 at 1:34 PM

When you’re talking about 2 pounds of grapes in a bag, etc, it is possible to calculate per pound prices. There are not usually scales in a store. For peaches and plums, you’ll need to weigh a few different single pieces at other stores to see how much one piece of fruit would weigh on average. I’ve been seeing more bags of plums, peaches, etc. lately at ALDI. I’ll see if I can help you calculate some of that next time I’m shopping produce.

And which store that you shop doesn’t have carts? They’re usually in a cart “garage” type aisle on the outside of the store entrance.

August 10, 2015 at 6:37 PM

Thanks. I shop the one on Woodward in Hazel Pk. I’ll have to look more closely for the carts next time. I don’t usually see people using any, but now I do remember the person in front of me in line last time did have one. This is definitely not one of their best stores. I’ve only seen one smiling, helpful employee in all the times I’ve been there. Usually the cashiers are grumpy and there’s only one line open so I have to wait a long time. And the produce is in bad shape a lot of the time. The brussel sprouts were disgusting on my last visit, full of brown spots. I don’t think I would have bothered with them even if they gave me them for free. Once I bought a bunch of green bananas I had to take back because they never ripened. Last time I went for a bag of onions that were on sale, they were out. I wish it was more like the one you toured, then it would be fun to shop there. I have been to the one on Van Dyke around 15 mile a few times, and that one is MUCH better.

August 10, 2015 at 7:52 PM

Louann, ALDI corporate needs to hear your concerns so that they can improve all locations. It is their intent to have stores with quality produce, helpful associates and everything you’ve come to expect. You can email me through the site and I can help direct you if you’d like.

ALDI has set the industry standard for quality and affordability. Our priority focus is saving people money on the food and products they want most, and we do this by offering shoppers a curated selection of ALDI-exclusive brands. ALDI exclusive brands allow us to provide the same high-quality product without passing on all of the hidden costs associated with the national brands, such as marketing and advertising. We made this decision in response to feedback from our customers, who have strong brand preferences, yet would like to complete more of their grocery shopping at ALDI. We also may carry a national brand if we are not able to procure an exclusive brand product that meets or exceeds the quality and taste of the national brand.

Shoppers are savvier about private labels now. We’ve helped people understand that brand name does not define quality. In fact, we are proud to say that 1-in-3 ALDI-exclusive product is award winning*. We guarantee quality on all our private-label products with our Twice as Nice Guarantee. If you don’t like an ALDI-exclusive product, bring it back. We’ll return your money and replace the product.
