CAPE TOWN TO GARDEN ROUTE Discover (or rediscover) SA’s famous Garden Route on an adventurous road-trip departing conveniently from Cape Town (and returning 3 days later) on a 300-kilometre journey to find the most incredible new experiences from the Mother City to the Tsitsikamma forests and back.

SAVE THE DATE Your ultimate Garden Route adventure begins on Friday 24 September. And here’s what you can expect:

DAY 1: MONDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 6am: Meet up with your fellow travellers and depart from Cape Town.

Take in the incredible scenery of SA’s famous Route 62 wine route, passing some of the most beautiful pastoral regions (including Swellendam, Barrydale, Montague and the Karoo).

Arrive in ostrich country: Welcome to Oudtshoorn, here you’ll explore the depths of SA’s 20-million-year-old limestone cave networks at the Cango Caves. And, if you’re brave enough, try to make it through the Devil’s Chimney.

Then you’ll meet and interact with the world’s largest flightless bird on a (multilingual) ostrich tour before tucking into a beautiful locally produced lunch.

There’s an optional wildlife ranch tour before departing for the oceanside haven of Brenton-on-Sea, where you’ll stay in secluded, rustic-luxury style cottages overlooking the Indian Ocean, where the Knysna River mouths into the sea.

DAY 2: TUESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER Wake up. Maybe take a stroll on the beautifully secluded beach? Explore the famous town of Knysna and then head off to the Bloukrans Bridge near Nature’s Valley. Probably SA’s most photographed bridge, this is the home of Africa’s first-ever (and until recently, the world’s highest) bungee jump. 

Not into bungee? No worries, it’s optional. And directly after is lunch at Bramon Wine Estate where you’re able to pick and choose to create your own bread and tapas board in Plettenberg Bay.

DAY 3: WEDNESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER Grab breakfast and check out of Brenton-On-Sea before heading off on a 3-hour safari game drive to see the Big 5. If you’re hungry for lunch, there’ll be time to stop off before turning it all back around on a leisurely drive back to Cape Town.

Want to explore a little more of the Eastern Cape? You’ll also be able to get dropped off in Port Elizabeth at an extra cost.

Bereits zu Beginn der Reise bestand ein tolles Verhältnis. Die Vorbereitungen waren bemerkenswert. Bereits beim ersten Kennenlernen war zu merken, dass vorab diverse Planungen gemacht wurden. Es wurde zusätzlich zur eigentlichen Ablaufplanung auch an Flyer und Broschüren gedacht, die zusätzlich zu Landesinformationen auch Sicherheitsgrundlagen berücksichtigten. Der Ablauf war vom ersten Tag an super durchdacht und auch hinsichtlich der Reihenfolge optimal. Hier wurde Wert darauf gelegt, dass zunächst Kapstadt und dann die nährere Umgebung aufgezeigt wurden. Zusätzlich zu den tollen Erlebnissen tat das Wetter mit freier Sicht sein übriges (auch wenn das nicht in der Macht des Cape Explorer lag, machte es dennoch die gesamte Reise zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis). Bei Axel Simon war jederzeit die Verbundenheit zu der Region zu spüren. Auch die Art und Weise der Vermittlung der Sehenswürdigkeiten, sowie der ggf. geschichtlichen oder regionalen Zusammenhänge war klasse. Besonders bemerkenswert war die Tatsache, dass die gemeinsamen Aktivitäten nicht pünktlich nach einem 8-stündigen Arbeitstag beendet wurden. Axel stand jederzeit beratend und hilfreich zur Seite.

Hi there, we have just completed our 4 th  tour with The Cape Explorer / Axel in the Cape Town area. Each tour was well organized, well prepared and included our individual wishes. The driving was extremely comfortable. Expat Explore offers great value for all they provide on their trips. Some of the nicest people I know I’ve met on Expat Explore tours. The tour leaders are friendly professionals who know their jobs inside and out and are great travelling companions as well. Expat Explore does all the work, including great bus drivers, hotels, breakfasts, and many dinners, while customers like me just sit back and enjoy some of the best experiences of a lifetime!

I actually did a little bit of travelling before the tour began without an organised tour and at times it got really stressful. I was a lot more tired and there is a lot of work to be done outside the sightseeing. I will definitely be back with Expat Explore. I find comfort in knowing I only have to make it to the coach each day. If the rest doesn’t go to plan, that’s ok because I’ll be on the bus experiencing it with everyone else.

Going somewhere new can be scary because you don’t always know what to expect and there may be language barriers. Travelling on a tour just makes the most sense and is also more affordable. To recreate the same itinerary ourselves would have been more expensive. Group rates are awesome! You always have something to do and plenty of free time to do your own thing. You also meet great people along the way. We also felt very safe with a tour leader.

A few years ago, a family member told me the story of two South Africans who had started a travel company together in London with the aim of making travel more accessible. The story made an impression on me and, not long after, I booked my first tour with them. Choosing Expat Explore this time around was a no-brainer.
