Ayodhya (अयोध्या Ayodhyā ) is an ancient city in the Awadh region of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . Ayodhya is one of the major holy cities of Hinduism - the world's 3rd-largest religion. It has a central role in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, whose protagonist Lord Rama is God incarnated on Earth as the prince of Ayodhya.
This article also covers Faizabad , the twin city of Ayodhya. Faizabad, and Ayodhya before it, was the capital of the 18th and 19th-century Oudh State before the capital was moved to Lucknow .
Understand [ edit ]
Name [ edit ]
The name Ayodhyā literally means "invincible" in Sanskrit , which is derived from the root yudh ("to fight, to wage war"). Historically, Ayodhya was also known as Saketa , which was widespread by Buddhist travellers and faraway traders.
Mythology [ edit ]
The Ramayana epic describes Lord Rama's 14-year exile, his victory over evil and his grand return with his wife Sita to Ayodhya to become king. This return to Ayodhya is celebrated as Diwali, the leading festival of hundreds of millions of Hindus world-wide. Consequently, Lord Rama's reign over Ayodhya and its surroundings, called Rama Rajya, is the epitome of good governance and moral society in the Hindu tradition.
The story of Rama has transcended into a great inspirational story and parable for children and adults around the world. Ayodhya has come to symbolise inner peace, joy and spiritual upliftment.
Former Thai capital of Ayutthaya and the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta are named after Ayodhya.
History [ edit ]
Ayodhya's history has also been marked by Hindu-Muslim disputes about a temple and mosque. In 1527, the Mughal Emperor Babur had a temple destroyed and a mosque constructed at the site in Ayodhya traditionally associated with the birth of Rama. Since then, the Babri Masjid became a focal point of grievances and disputes. The mosque was ultimately destroyed by Hindu demonstrators in 1992. Following the destruction, there were large riots in Gujarat and terrorist acts (including the Godhra train massacre, which triggered the Gujarat riots, and the 2005 Ram Janmabhoomi attack in Ayodhya). Following the rise of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government under Narendra Modi in 2014, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of awarding the site to the Hindus, while the Muslims were given an alternative site to build a replacement mosque.

- 26.782166 82.199897 3 Mani Parbat , Kami Ganj . A former Buddhist vihara (cave with cells) that became a Hindu temple. It is dotted with little shrines and if you stand on the topmost terrace you get a splendid view of Ayodhya, one that includes a cluster of small white buildings at the base of the hill that turns out to be a Muslim graveyard.
- Swarg Dwar . According to mythology, Lord Rama is said to have transformed himself into Lord Mahavishnu and left for Vaikunth.
Temples [ edit ]
- Choti Chawni . A very big temple made by 100% white marble.
- 26.797956 82.199608 7 Kanak Bhawan ( Palace of Gold ) ( Near Hanuman Garhi ). The Bhawan is frequented by scores of visitors every year. The temple is widely known for the images of Sri Rama and Sita wearing gold crowns and because of this the Bhawan is also referred to as Sone-ka-Ghar.
- 26.809 82.20565 8 Nageshwarnath Temple ( On the bank of the river, on the east side of town ). 5AM-11AM, noon-8PM . It is said to be built by Kush, Lord Rama's son. Legend has it that he almost destroyed the water-living Nagas (semi-divine snake people) because he suspected them of stealing his amulet. Only Lord Shiva's intervention saved the semi-divine snakes. Khush then established this temple showing the Nagas worshipping Lord Shiva, his father's favourite deity. Another version of this legend states that the lost amulet was found by a Nag-kanya (young girl from the Naga tribe), who fell in love with him, and as she was Lord Shiva's devotee he constructed this temple for her.
- Ramrekha Temple . ( updated Dec 2023 )
- Treta ke Thakur . It is a temple that stands at the place where Rama is said to have performed the Ashwamedha Yagna. The Raja of Kulu is said to have built a new temple here about 300 years ago called Kaleram ka Mandir, where the idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Bharat have reportedly been carved out of a single block of black sandstone. These idols are supposed to be from the original Rama temple, which once stood on the banks of the River Sarayu.
- Vijayraghaw temple ( Shri Vishwa Virat Vijay Raghav Mandir ), Nayaghat ( In front of Punjab National Bank ). It is one of the best temple in Ayodhya, build in 2008. In this temple god Ram presented in 12 faces called Viswa-virat (world's big). This temple made by red marbles and stainless steel.

Events [ edit ].
Ayodhya being a sacred religious place, has lots to offer to a spiritual mind. Some of the fairs and festivals Ayodhya is famous for are
- Chaturdashkoshi Parikrama . Constitutes a circular journey of 28 miles made once a year on the occasion of Akshainaumi, which is completed within 24 hours.
- Ram Lila . The enactment of the story of Lord Rama is believed to have been started by great Saint Tulsidas. The Ramcharitmanas, written by him till today forms the basis of Ram Lila performances. In some places, Rama Lila is associated with Vijayadashmi celebrations in late September and early October and also with Rama Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama. Ram lila, basically an enactment of a myth, is presented as a cycle-play with the story varying from 7 to 31 days. The Rama Lila performance evokes a festive atmosphere and enables observance of religious rites. It is also rich in performance of crafts such as costume jewellery, masks, headgear, make-up and decoration. The four main Ram Lila styles are the pantomimic style with a predominance of jhankis based style with multi-local staging; the operative style which draws its musical elements from the folk operas of the region and the stage, Ram Lila of the professional troupes called mandalis . Ayodhya is popular for mandali Ram Lila. The performance is dialogue – based and presented on a platform stage. High standard of performance is complemented by songs and kathak dances and eye-catching décor.
- Ram Navmi Mela . Ayodhya, the holy city of the sacred pilgrim centre of Hindus plays host to the Ram Navmi Festival in the month of April. Thousands of worshippers gather to venerate the Lord at Kanak Bhawan.
- Sravan Jhula Mela . This mela celebrates the playful spirit of the deities. On the third day of the second half of Shravan, images of the deities (specially of Rama, Lakshman and Sita) are placed in swings in the temples. They are also taken to Mani Parvat, where the idols are made to swing from the branches of the trees. Later the deities are brought back to temples. The mela lasts till the end of the month of Shravan.
- Parikramas . Ayodhya is perhaps the most noted place in the northern India where parikramas are undertaken by Hindu Pilgrims. These are circumambulations of important religious places and are of varying duration, shortest being the `Antargrahi Parikrama’ which has to be completed within a day. After taking a dip in the Saryu, the devotee commences the parikarma from the Nageshwarnath temple and passes through Rama Ghat, Sita Kund, Manipuravata and Brahma Kund, finally terminating at Kanak Bhawan. Then there is the `Panchkoshi Parikrama’ circuit of 10 miles, which touches Chakratirtha, Nayaghat, Ramghat, Saryubagh, Holkar-ka-pura, Dashrathkund, Jogiana, Ranopali, Jalpa Nala and Mahtabagh. On the way the people pay homage to deities in the shrines which are situated on the route.

Faizabad – legacy of nawabs of awadh.
Faizabad was the original capital of the Nawabs. It lies roughly 130 km east of Lucknow on the banks of the Saryu river. You have probably not heard of this name in the context of tourism. We stopped at the place on our way to Ayodhya to see some of the remaining monuments of the Nawab era.
Faizabad – Nawabs of Awadh – Twin City of Ayodhya
As we passed through the city, it looked like any other town in Uttar Pradesh. Narrow busy streets lined with shops on both sides. Cycle rickshaws, pedestrians & two-wheeler drivers compete for the best bit of the road. Hawkers shouting at top of their voice. Old-style shops take you back in time. Just then you pass by some old structure – an arched gateway or an old Haveli. You wonder how this place would have looked in its hay days.
There are two main things to be seen in the city – the tomb of Nawab Shuja-Ud-Daula and his wife who is popularly known as Bahu Begum.
History of Faizabad
Some historians believe that the area that is today called Faizabad was called Saket during the epic era of Ramayana . It is quite possible as Ayodhya is right next door. This was the mythical palace of Dasrath – the father of Lord Rama.
In known history, Saadat Ali Khan was appointed as the Subedar of Awadh in 1722. He was the first one to build the first cantonment here on the banks of the Saryu River. He was the first Naib of Awadh in the Mughal court. The word Nawab comes from Naib. It would later become the title of his dynasty that would rule Awadh till the independence of India in 1947.
In its initial days, Faizabad was known as Bangla – for the huge mad barracks that were built here. How and when it came to be known as Faizabad seems to be lost in history.
Umrao Jaan Ada or Ameeran as the famous courtesan of Awadh was known to have come from Faizabad. She was sold to a Kotha in Lucknow , and that is where she gained her fame. I would say it was Rekha in the film Umrao Jaan who was immortalized here.
Things to see in Faizabad
Like any city, you can walk around this one too and know the city. If you do not have time, here are the main places to visit for you.
Gulab Bari – Tomb of Shuja-Ud-Daula
Gulab Bari translates to Rose Garden. However, you do not see any roses around this monument. So, go with your imagination. Try and visualize how this huge campus would look with pink roses blooming all around it.
The first structure that you see is a Nakkar Khana -a gate that was used to play music on its upper story. The gate is in quite a dilapidated state. However, if you look closely at its arches, you would see signs of stucco work and probably some paintings in their faintest version.
We entered through the gate and laid our eyes on the tomb of Nawab Shuja-Ud-Daula. A pillar with lion capital has been installed right at the entry of this – I assume post-independence.
On the right side of the entrance gate is the Imambara and left side is a mosque. Both these structures are kind of inaccessible. All around the tomb the outer wall has simple but lovely turrets, The barracks used to house the staff of the tomb. Today there is a nursery in one part of the garden. This in a way keeps alive the name of the place, though I missed the roses here too.
Tomb of Shuja-Ud-Daula
The tomb of Shuja-Ud-Daula follows typical Islamic principles – a grave on the ground floor or basement and a replica of it on the first floor.
At Gulab Bari, the graves are on the ground floor. You can request the caretaker to open it for you. Shuja-Ud-Daula rests here along with his mother. His father Safdarjung’s grave was also here but it was later shifted to Delhi. In Delhi, his tomb is beautiful in red sandstone comparable to that of Humayun’s Tomb.
Tombs here are built with bricks and covered with thick lime plaster. The Stucco work is influenced by the British. The bricks used are called Lakhori Bricks – they are thinner than the ones we use today.
The grave is simple but it is enclosed in a beautiful wooden perforated wall with arches.
The tomb was built by Shuja-Ud-Daula himself during his lifetime.
Bahu Begum ka Maqbara
Bahu Begum was the wife of a Shuja-Ud-Daula – Ummataul Zohra. Her tomb is taller than her husband’s tomb and to date, it is the tallest building in the heritage town.
You enter through a lofty gate and get the first view of the tomb through the tree-lined avenue. Take a flight of steps from one corner of the raised platform to reach the upper story. There are halls and corridors that run below the domes.
There are lovely ceiling frescos in pale yellow and bright blue color. They are the best part of this tomb. They look quite recently restored, while most of the other features of the tomb are probably waiting for a restoration. Arches and the stucco work around them make an interesting architecture to admire.
Bahu Begum’s grave is on the ground floor which is inaccessible.
Ostrich Birds
We met a pair of Ostrich in the gardens of Bahu Begum’s tomb. Since not many tourists visit these monuments, they were in attack mode. We had to request the local staff to escort us to the main building. However, this is how I discovered that Ostrich exists in this part of the country. I did not see but I was told that a lot of peacocks live in this complex.
A motif of Twin Fish
A common motif of two fishes can be seen in both tombs. Two fishes are a part of symbols associated with this dynasty. The story goes that when the Nawabs were traveling to build their new kingdom in Lucknow, a pair of fishes came to their boat. They thought of this as an auspicious omen and adopted them as their symbol. Everywhere you go in Awadh, you will be first greeted by the twin fishes.
After spending a couple of hours at these two tombs, we headed to Ayodhya on a boat from the Guptar Ghat. There would be more coming on the Guptar Ghat in the upcoming post on Ayodhya.
While Ayodhya was what I had set out to explore, this place was a chance discovery. It was a great rendezvous with the initial history of the Nawabs of Lucknow.

Jal Samadhi Sthal of Lord Ram; Pilgrimage, Architecture & History
Guptar Ghat in Ayodhya district of Uttar Pradesh is a religious place on the west bank of River Ghaghra, also known as River Saryu. The birth place of Lord Ram and its adjoining region is known as Ayodhya, more specifically Saket. In the scriptures, the glory of the Gupta-Ghat has been proclaimed. Guptar Ghat is approximately 9 km from Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya. Guptar Ghat looks different from the ghats of Ayodhya in many ways. There is neither the presence of ‘Pandas’ nor the religious environment in strict sense. The solitude on the ghat does not create boredom rather it elicits conscious peace. Lord Ram, according to Hindu mythology, took ‘Jal Samadhi at Guptar Ghat and went to Vaikunth. Jal Samadhi means relinquishing one’s life by submerging into water in order to be relieved from the world and worldly attractions, called ‘Maya’. Vaikunth is the name of abode of Lord Vishnu. This perspective of mythology makes the Saryu River holy for the believers in Hindu religion and devotees of Lord Ram. In Hindu culture, many religious rites & rituals are performed on the basis of Ramcharitmanas, written by great saint and poet Goswami Tulsi Das. Since Guptar Ghat is related to Lord Ram, so, this place has its cultural significance too.
Importance of Guptar Ghat can be ascertained by its mention in various religious scriptures. Find below the ‘shlokas’ in Skandh Purana describing the significance of this ghat:
There are some temples near Guptar Ghat like Narasingh Temple, Sita-Ram Temple, Raja Mandir, and Chakra Hari Vishnu temple. It is said that there are impressions of the feet of lord ram in Chakra Hari Vishnu Temple. Various nearby temples generate a feel of peace. Another attraction on Guptar Ghat is Kartikeya Seva Sadan, a spiritual center. It was the place where Saint Kartikeya of the Bhakti tradition resided only 50-60 years ago. One can enjoy a pleasant view of sunrise and sunset while feeling the breeze of fresh air on the bank of river. There one can enjoy boat ride too while viewing the surroundings of the river.
The most attractive aspect of the Gupta Ghat is its natural environment and extensive forest land here. There is Cantt - Dogra Regiment Center – here. The forest or garden near the ghat was previously called Company Garden but, now, known as Guptar Ghat Van. One can enjoy greenery and natural beauty. Different kind of flowers can be seen here. Faizabad Museum is near to the ghat. Other major attractions of Ayodhya city (previously called Faizabad) are Gulab Bari , Bahu Begam Ka Maqbara (Tomb of Bahu Begum) and Fort Calcutta.
There is a Samadhi of Gumnami Baba which is assumed to be of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, India’s freedom fighter and founder of INA (Indian National Army).
In 19th century, Raja Darshan Singh has done efforts to renovate Guptar Ghat. Presently, UP government and Uttar Pradesh tourism department are doing their level best to increase facilities and conditions of the ghat. It takes almost one hour generally to enjoy the serene ambience of Guptar Ghat. One can sit there for hours to enjoy the morning or evening with some peace. Entry to the ghat is free.

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is a Keeper: TV Review
Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.
Popular on Variety
Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”
There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.
The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.
The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”
It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.
The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).
During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.
Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.
These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.
All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

The Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend — With Up to 18 Shooting Stars Per Hour
It's the first of 2 meteor showers happening this spring.

The next few weeks are busy with meteor showers, including the Lyrids’ peak this weekend — a show that could bring eye-popping fireballs, depending on the conditions. The Lyrid meteor shower, which peaks overnight from April 21-22, is the first of two spring meteor showers; the second, the Eta Aquariids, will peak in early May.
This weekend’s event could produce up to 18 streaking Lyrids per hour in peak conditions, according to NASA . Unfortunately, it hits during a bright waxing gibbous moon, which will make viewing trickier — but all is not lost. If you’re in a dark-sky destination from April 21-22, it’s still worth giving the Lyrids a go.
Here’s how and when to watch the 2024 Lyrid meteor shower, plus when to catch the next one.
What Makes the Lyrid Meteor Shower Special?
Debris and particles from Comet Thatcher create the Lyrids, an annual spring meteor shower known for vibrant fireballs (astonishingly bright meteors), as well as spontaneous outbursts. During the latter — which occurs when the shower generates an eye-popping number of shooting stars — happens roughly every 60 years, according to EarthSky . The next outburst isn’t expected to hit until 2042.
How to See the 2024 Lyrid Meteor Shower
The full 2024 Lyrid meteor shower runs from April 14 to 30, with peak activity striking between the Sunday and Monday night, according to The Planetary Society . Point your eyes toward the constellation Lyra to watch for the spectacle. It will rise above the northeast horizon around 10 p.m. While stargazers can technically view the Lyrid meteor shower from the southern hemisphere, it is easiest to observe it from the northern hemisphere.
Will 2024 be a Good Year for the Lyrid Meteor Shower?
This year, the bright moon, which will be out all night, will likely obscure many streaking meteors. Increase your odds of catching the show by watching from a stargazing-friendly destination — here are some of our favorite dark-sky getaways . Or, hold out just a bit longer to enjoy another spring meteor shower — the Eta Aquariids — which will peak near the dim, near-new moon on May 6.

How to Fly Your Kid Solo, Free of Stress
By Alexander Nazaryan
For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.
Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.
On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .
If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.
Before you book, know the process
Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.
The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.
In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.
At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.
To learn more about this process, read the Department of Transportation’s online guide, “When Kids Fly Alone,” followed by the website of your selected carrier.
Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee
Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.
Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.
International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.
On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.
Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.
Restrictions: There are plenty
U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.
The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.
On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.
United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.
JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.
American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.
However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.
What to pack
Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.
When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.
“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.
“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)
